Ubuntu On Android Devices now working. - G1 General

Edit: posted and look up, HTC G1?? WTH! not where I wanted to be..oh well.

wow wow wow it very good job

nice, thanks

I FLIPPED OUT when I heard of this on the ubuntu web site. Cant wait to have it running one i save up for the htc one x. Lubuntu seems like a better choice though for distro. hopefully you can run just server and install everything else from bash shell. I think this is simply home folder redirection. the same as my computer but without the reboot.

+1 for looking forward to this with the one x. I can't understand why there isn't any bigger excitement for this. The xda threads are few and not much of a discussion in them. I've been dreaming of something like this for years, ONE unit for everything basic. I had put my hopes to MS to make a solution like this but there's nothing implying that there will be win 8 phones in the near future.

This is great. Would love to use Ubuntu from my phone.

Palm's WebOS-ROM

Hey, the ROM for the Palm Pre is out.
http://palm.com/ROM
http://palm.cdnetworks.net/rom/pre_p100eww/webosdoctorp100ewwsprint.jar (source)
If someone gets the ROM, wouldn't it be kinda cool trying to get it on the HTC devices?
Since I have no skills in programming or porting, I want to say that I'm interested in the thought. So who else is with me?
http://forums.precentral.net/web-os-development/184378-ok-rom-comes-30.html
Seems interesting. i cannot help but i would be interested in seeing this ported too. The only issue is that it is limited to devices with a keyboard as webOS does not have a software keyboard.
yes, but since they have "cracked" the OS, some have managed to build a "hello world" app. So touch keyboard are probably not that hard for the developers on xda

i tried to boot it on my touch dual... placed all nessecary files in /lib put the files onto a microSD, changed the haret default.txt, and booted it... it worked fine, without GUI tho. it ran fsck, started alsa up and ended in runlevel 2 at a login prompt. kind of weird... might have got the wrong rootfs by mistake, im gonna check that.
edit: indeed it was at the beginning of the boot sequence ( i created the nessecary /dev nodes using mknod ) i keep getting an error from the lib ld.so, that libgoodabort cannot be loaded. it stops after that point....
webOS seems to be a very nice fingerfriendly OS...
How much is actually the chance that webOS could be able to port to WM devices? Is webOS based on *nix like Android?
hmm, is webos going to be the new android for our devices? we may never know...

dude, how did you extract the content from the .jar? Extracted nova-cust-image-castle.rootfs.tar.gz from webOS.tar only?
EDIT: yes.. that's it, I'll try to run it like a virtual machine, but I don't think it will be easy!

think so! although its not open source (but the kernel is), it shouldnt be too hard to get it to work.... maybe only on omap devices though...
and yep, its *nix... java based as well apparently
i would loove to see webos come to our devices
Since WM can already multitask, wouldnt it be easier for some developers here to make a Windows mobile version of Tealos? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-adhk9BDnw
Make it a little more stable & with much better icons.
We wouldnt get the universal search that webos have or the notifications area at the bottom but we would still have multitasking plus everything else WM has that WebOs lacks
this will be a treat whenever it happens...but multiple resolution and everything might take some time...goodluck guys
sounds wicked!
I would love to see this happin... as don't think I could leave tha WM OS having other OS's and UI's just just more braging power for us! lol plus No expendable memory on pre meen I probly won't buy one... don't know why they do that! smartphone should come with two SD card slots minimum! one mainly for programs and second for swopable file storage (needed to drop a post so I can find this thread again)
wow
Epic grammar skills.
Hum. This could be interesting to test this OS on a htc touch hd (palm pre is not sold in france...).
Does somebody or a team tries to really do it?

SORRY OFF TOPIC!!!!
WEB OS ON WM WOULD BE THA SH#T! PLEASE GET THIS WORKING I MEEN DAMN!!!!
Yea guys this would be stella!!! more bragging rights for us on why were better then the cryphone lol.... but in general the palm pre OS does like bad ass an I wouldnt mind running it/messing with it on my htc fuze!!! hope this gets done!
Awesome! I hope people get this working... It would be awesome to get it working on my Samsung i730, but I'm pretty sure the phone doesn't have much of a userbase anymore....
i'm kind of a junkie when it comes to phones, and i was contemplating getting a palm pre, but the hardware keyboard is terrible, so i wouldn't want it... but i really like the os. its just that the phone itself is crap.
here's a question though.. i read that the palm pre can do data, and phone at the same time... if it were at all possible to run the palm os rom on a cdma sprint tp, would we be able to actually use evdo rev a features, such as that?
Palm WebOS is opensource

Since June 18, 2009 Palm was make Palm WebOS to OpenSource software http://pdnblog.palm.com/2009/06/palms-open-source-portal-is-now-available/
There are Palm WebOS opensource versions landed at: http://opensource.palm.com
Go to http://opensource.palm.com/packages.html to download Palm WebOS by versions, there are 1.0.1-4 versions are available to download. The latest is: http://opensource.palm.com/1.0.4/index.html
so, is it enough to start work out to port Palm WebOS to another one?
I have a BlueAngel device and wanted to port the nice OS to my device, anyone want to do it?

Would it be possible to run MOTOBLUR on the Hero?

Just wondering if anyone had tried porting it or anything like that. That would be neat.
Go ahead and try it. Let us know how it works out for you...
I'll try and fiddle around with it.
There was a thread about it and someone was working it, but its under all these topics. Would be nice to have though.

I don't think any true "porting" would be necessary. If we were to push/pull the right apks/libs, it would probably fire right up. They have a system dump of the Motorola Enzo in the general Android development forums that I was looking at last night... the system/app directory seemed to contain multiple apks related to the blur interface...
I didn't look to far into it... unsure if it'll run on 2.1 currently. I'd rather work on porting Windows Mobile Classic.
I attempted and got it booting, but didn't have time to fix the issues.
Once we get FriendStream I think blur is useless.

Maybe, but FriendStream honestly kinda sucks compared to MotoBlur in my opinion. Not as feature rich.
do they even have motoblur yet running on anything 2.1? Don't think the droid has it...
If you are going to try. Go download s_blur on the G1 forums, it would give you a good starting base, then take it appart pull its kernel out, put our kernel in.
I had to stop when I was having issues with my linux liveCD and using CPIO. Can't unpack/repack the files with out that. and for some reason it just wouldn't work for me. I was going to try again one day because it would be cool.
But anyways:
Once you get our kernel in it, it will boot. but just about everything force closes.
Where do you get FriendStream?

?, I haven't found it to be anymore feature packed (From what I tried on the Moto Backflip), FS is more compacted whereas MB is split (widget wise).
I think its better split up cause if you follow a lot of people its hard to manage that with FriendStream, I dont know.
if it was possible to port onto the HTC Touch then its possible for our phone it just requires a dev with the knowhow and the demand for such a rom. lets be honest as much as our devs love to tweak their phones they also need some love in the form of donations because this work isnt easy. I was building my own roms for my Touch before the Hero came along and it was tedious work. That said if its ever done I will try this out as I just bought my girl a Moto Cliq and she seems to LOVE it. I honestly tho will never buy another phone that isnt made by HTC
I was fiddling around with this too. I got it to boot and connect to Sprint.... but that's all I got it to do.

You act like that's a bad thing. I know nothing about building roms, but a start is a start. Anyhow, a blur rom would be awesome to have. I personally like the look of motoblur.
I had this running on the touch vogue when it first came out. It's ok but sense is way better for me and really don't do the social networking thing. Now if it had anti-social networking I'd be using it right now.

windows phone 7 on hd2 for real

hey everyone
This has been a long time coming. Thanks to the unshakable versatility of the HTC HD2 (what other phone runs Windows Mobile, Android, MeeGo, Windows 95, and Ubuntu?) we finally have a working port of Windows Phone 7. As you will see, the port works quite well: everything works
hd2 is the coolest phone on earth
you can get the instructions from the link below

looks great... i will wait for some reports of you guys...

cant access hotmail account
cant access facebook account
and cant access my memory card.

guys..im a newbie here but i succesfuly upgraded my hd2 with android using one of the builds here,,, my question would be on should i remove my sd card when i try to upgrade to wp7? or should i leave it inside the phone?
quick replies will be very much appreciated since i will be doing the upgrade later... thanks ya'll
BRAVO for the DFT but i'll never use it because win7 UI sucks
Does it work, lol
Sent from HTC HD2 Android SUPERRAM Tapatalk
Indeed It does! Still prefer Android nonetheless, but will surely keep playing around with this for a day or so
I wonder if it will be possible to have an Android-WP7 dualboot option. I still think that WP7 is nowhere near as well developed as Android on the HD2, but I would love to try it when all the bugs and niggles have been sorted out.
Good news!! But where can download the wp7 system?

Sorry but what has this got to do with Android OS?
This should be in the HD2 ROM or General forum.
That is one ugly OS !!! I played with it for 1/2 day trying to force me to like it. No way.
I rather have Win 6.5.
W7 is really ugly, these large buttons on a white or black background, no menus, no choices, just few options.
I don't understand where's the hype
see the first post, anything is in the zip..
wowow!!
really great!!
It's REAL . I'm using it just right now it is very very fast very stable.
actually it is the fastest OS I've ever use.
It is even faster than android NAND more than like 10X.
I really recommend you to give it a shot.
I agree the OS itself needs a lot of improvement to be an interesting. but it has another advantages such as microsoft office.
Its definitely fast and stable, but the drawbacks are huge.
My first issue is that it wont connect to hidden wireless networks so it will eat up my data allowance as soon as I do anything.
Went back to Android.

Anyone trying Windows 8?

Kind of off topic, but I'm just curious to know if anyone's tried out the Windows 8 developer preview. I'm trying it right now, and it's honestly not that bad. Some things still need work, but it's definitely something I could get use to.

I havn't tried it yet, trying to get it to work with vmware.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/br229516
I thew it on my 4 year old cheap laptop and after figuring out how to navigate the start menu I really like how fast it is. Only problem is I can't seem to be able to install .net framework, hence phonemypc won't work (I wanted to test drive metro ui on my epic since its touchscreen optimized) I'm gonna keep it on my laptop until the beta expires but I'm sad to say that I want a windows 8 tablet waaaaay more than even an ice cream tablet.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Yeah I'm using it on a partition on my brand-new laptop. I really like it actually!
Metro UI is a bit to get used to, but I love using the touchpad multi-touch controls to navigate from panel-mode to the standard desktop, bootup is much faster, and I can share files fine between my regular Win7 partition and the Windows 8 partition.
@xopher.hunter, I had an issue with .NET 3.5, but it installed fine after a restart. YMMV...
I bought a Touchpad during the fire sale, and have yet to receive it from HP Small Business (have to wait for the last production run), but I wanna put Win8 on it when the ARM build gets out.
Im waiting for a windows 8 tablet to come out
I do NOT like the UI for desktops :/
WIndows 7 for my PC, windows 8 for tablet.
fk yeah.
Microsoft killed all of my interest in an android tablet when they revealed the metro ui windows 8. PERFECT TABLET OS (atleast based on what ive seen, it has all the right things.)
---------- Post added at 12:26 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:25 AM ----------
actually...i just remembered in a previous video they didnt have metro ui on and it looked like windows 7...so i might just give it a shot if i can take the skin off..

Its this 10 dollar app in the market, yes it is a remote desktop client but very well done and very simple to set up. Its a freaking life saver if you forget something on your computer.
I still haven't been able to install .net 3.5.1, I even dl'd the standalone but it still wanted to use microsoft update to install, and I rebooted it too. Oh well this is why I put this on my old ass laptop. Runs like a champ though only on 1.86ghz and 1.5gb of ram it seems ready for tablets alredy.

I personally am hating the metro ui...its to hard to navigate. It's too big of a step. To me, its clunky. People were afraid of vista because of the glossy difference from xp, this is like 100x worse.

I find it too bland. (still wonder if I can change the green background to another color...)
Idk, I agree it's too tablet-like, but I like how everything is together.
Definitely doesn't make sense for a computer though.
I feel like we're going backwards a bit since we're basing computer UI off of mobile UIs which are meant to be more compact.
Even in OS X Lion, they had the "Launchpad" feature where it looked exactly like you were on an iPad.
Why do companies think people like this?

Idk. Maybe because they think it looks better than just a plain list, but now they're more interested in eye candy than functionality. Why can't we have both.
On the other topic, I would like to try windows 8, but it's not really useful for me since I have a 1024x600 netbook, so Metro Apps don't work. I've tried the hack that makes resolution higher on Windows 7, but it looks horrible with that.
my question is the lifehacker site says you need to burn a dvd or use a thumbdrive, can I also use a SD card? (don't want to waste a DVD and have no RWs at the moment)
Also will doing this erase everything on Win 7? I dual booted Ubuntu once and it didn't but LifeHacker says something about formmating the drive

Will not erase everything as long as you boot to dvd or usb (I don't think SD cards are bootable). You don't need to format, you need to partition (which is like grouping your hard drive, with one group for windows 7 and one for windows 8)

I have a really bad taste in my mouth over Windows Mobile devices. I owned a HTC Touch Diamond and a HTC dual Touch. Hardware was FANTASTIC, software SUCKED.
It might be not letting go of the past but i'm personally steering away from Windows mobile. In fact i had an Android port on my Dual Touch . That was the only way i could use it, with out wanting to kill someone when i was done with it.

I actually like the metro look. When Windows 8 comes out I want to try and find a way to get it to work on my Asus transformer. I would relish the idea of having devices that all run windows OS's again, esp since I'm a windows dev I could write apps myself if they don't exist. I'm too lazy to learn android atm.
