Handcent 4.0 Public BETA! ** UPDATE 2/16 Beta 7 - Android Software Development

PLEASE READ THIS FULL POST BEFORE INSTALLING!
Beta Version updated 2/16. Build 7
This is our 7th beta build of Handcent 4.0 and we're releasing it to the public. Because of the nature of BETA we expect you to be able to install an application manually without using the market.
Remember, Handcent is a free application, so we don't have a fancy, outsourced, technical support team to assist you with Android OS tech support such as installing applications outside of the APP market. If someone wants to link me a tutorial for this, I'll post it in this first post.
This will replace and upgrade your current version of Handcent 3.9.x. It does not install a second copy. You can easily revert back to an older version if you experience catastrophic issues by redownloading from the Android marketplace.
HELP US FIND BUGS! If you think you found something, but you aren't sure, see if myself or someone else can replicate it in this forum before submitting a bug report.
Thanks for your patience! Don't forget the THANKS button here, and show your support by removing ads in Handcent by purchasing a subscription or contribution membership.
New to XDA? The install file is attached to this post.
New Features
Handcent Talk - Allows you to bind your phone number and send text messages for free using the Handcent network.
Greater customization (particularly with widgets and the pop-up window but not everything is implemented yet)
Improved compatibility with iOS messaging from iPhones (iOS compatible group messaging planned)
Full ICS Support
Features under Development
iPhone iMessaging compatible GROUP MESSAGE support
Skinnable POPUP notification
Greater detailed ICS Notification features
SMS/MMS/Settings Backup to SD CARD feature (Which won't require subscription like the online backup service!)
Confirmed Issues
Some modded users may experience theme compatibility issues when using themes of white text on dark backgrounds.

Thanks for this! Can this be installed over the current stable version with no issue?
Edit: could you also please provide some sort of changelog so us beta testers can test/verify all the new things?

Yes. It will replace the current version. And this version is quite stable. We don't expect many issues to come up.

Only issue I can see so far is that it doesn't like dark menus as the text is black and doesn't pull thebcilor.from the android system

Hmm, is there a way to change the new top action bar? Or do we have to wait for the skins to be updated? Right now it is a light blue that doesn't fit with the Darkness theme I'm using... Or am I being mindgamed and it was always this blue?
Also, I have a suggestion for one option regarding some wasted screen space. Going to "Settings > Custom style > Bubble settings > Enable text counter" lets us enable or disable the text counter. This text counter shows under the text editor.
When the text counter is disabled, the text counter is gone, but the vertical space is still taken up by the blank space. See screenshot below for what I mean.

It would be nice if disabling the text counter would collapse the previously reserved space.

I can suggest collapsing the text counter field when it's not being used, but yeah, we are aware that there may be SOME skinning issues and we will be addressing those as best as we can prior to the public release.

already set.

I see. I'll be bringing this up with development as we are aware that many Handcent users are also advanced users who root their devices and install third-party ROMs. I'm one of them, myself. However, with Cyanogen largely unavailable to DX2 users, this isn't something I get the luxury of testing.

I will be more then willing to help in this. I am pretty sure I can make a few simple changes so the color codes call the ones from the stock android framework. It would go along way to reduce the fragmentation issues we all see with how apps look if they used the built in color codes instead of defining their own. If I can be of any help please feel free to let me know.

Missed something in the OP. Man enough to admit I am a noob at times lol

Oops I must have missed that the first time i read it. I remembered the entire post except for that part lol. Ill edit me post.

First app load scrolling performance is absolutely horrific. It's choppier than any other app I've seen on my SGS II.
Edit: contact selection screen's scrolling is even worse. It's like watching a horrible car crash in slow-mo over a 28.8k modem.

How many messages do you have. Mine had no issues scrolling.

Ditto I have no scrolling issues. Do you have thousands of messages stored?

I thought we were finally going to get group mms compatibility with iOS? I can't find any option to enable this and it's not working natively.
If this was not added, what does "Improved compatibility with iOS messaging from iPhones" actually mean?
It's frustrating being left out of the loop because my friends on iphones like using iOS group messaging to communicate.

Good to know it's coming. If you guys are first to the market with this feature, you will make a lot of android users with iPhone using buddies very happy.

Is there/will there be an option to turn off the new 3 home screens? I appreciate you want to highlight the Handcent services and talk, but is a little annoying to accidentally change the screen when scrolling the conversation list.
The rest all looks good, much prefer the new 'unknown' contact avatar to the previous.

[very simple mockup ]
Okay so basicly it has a
tabslide for updating your status
tabslides for unread tweets*
*cause tweets will only have 140 characters.. it will be possible to show them completely in the tabslide itself.. hovering over means.. it is read
avatar image
it has a function to show like unread text/email... but than how many unread tweets.
it should have a notification option in the sound/alarms section inside wm6.5 options.. so you can add your own sound/vibrate/mute to it.
and most important.. it should run in backround.. without popping up in the taskmessenger.
it should have options for how many times a day it will update (5 minutes/30 minitues etc)
clickable url's
extra - a sort of extra inprogram window ( this will mean you go out of wm6.5 today ). where you can see all tweets. or at least latest 100 or something
I hope someone can develop this, cause i think personally it will have a big target audience Me myself.. aint a programmer.. would like to, but i simply dont know where to start on it and/or how!
tx
strages
anyone? comon know some want it too
this would be really nice

this thread is also on developing a twitter tab for wm6.5
let me get my cabs working then I will see where I can go with mine. I like the idea though. If someone wants to beat me to it thats cool too.

Isn't twitter accessible via standard SMS? I thought most people use twitter in tandem with their built-in SMS system, and since you already have a txt plugin on titanium you should be good to go!
Sure, it would be nice to see the mailboxes kept seperate between tweets and all else, but personally I'd like to see an RSS feed or active tasks (i.e. the PIM tasks) since there is currently no other way to get that on the 6.5 today screen.
so if i use pocketwit on my phone right an send twitts, itll be using my text messages??? i ask cause i dont have an unlimited text plan an dont wanna get burned aka screwed with a huge bill!!!

Not necessarily. I said it CAN be used in tandem with SMS, and it shares many similarities (limited character message size, etc), however that doesn't mean you get charged for each tweet.
I don't know anything about pocketwit, but it may use data instead of SMS.
Most people I know use standard SMS instead of data, especially if they don't own a smartphone.
While I would agree that a twitter plugin is a cool idea (if you sms a lot, your tweets could get lost in the crowd), there are other potential plugins as I already mentioned that currently have no alternative. If it were up to me, I'd like to see those come out first.

gotcha!! but off hand do you know if pocketwit uses data or sms???
PockeTwit uses data.
thanks for the guys who like my idea.. hope someone can compup with the acutal program XD
ye pocket twit is using data .. you can send tweets by email i believe but of cours that would still be data connection required
It should be possible to build a panel a bit like Shocos Weather panel which comes in two MortScript parts:
1. Settings, stores stuff in the registry like username, password and frequencies of updates, default Twitter app
2. The downloading of the tweet, shouldn't be too hard as it's pretty similar to the weather panel (might need a little work on the avatars), just need the RSS feed [although saying that, I'm not 100% sure you can get a password requested XML file with Mort, damm!].
The only thing that I can't see being possible is the update page, as I'm not aware of any input boxes on the tabs, instead you could have a page showing your status, with clicking on it bringing up a Mort prompt for the new status.

How do you make those icons in the bottom show up, where it shows you what windows you have open?
The basics first, Dialer one is an excellent dialer, T9 contact search, speeddial, and many other benefits over the incredibly lackluster stock dialer. Handcent is my choice for texting, Barcode scanner will let you scan qr's and head directly to them on the market. BTW online is the best way to browse the market, android zoom http://www.androidzoom.com/ or appbrain http://www.appbrain.com/ are a couple popular choices. You can then put your spanking new barcode scanner to work as you farm the market.

Yeah that reminds me that I need to pick up Handcent on day 1 of my n1. I hear that its god's gift to android. Does it still do the voice-to-text thing?
I like handcent, but its such a bloated program. It doesn't seem to be slow though. I have been using the stock app lately just to see if I miss any features from handcent, and wit my usage, no I haven't, only a few minor adjustments to functionality. The stock app tends to handle sending messages when you have no signal then move into an area with signal. Sometimes in buildings I have poor signal and while holding the phone my signal dies. When this happens using handcent, the message will always be in limbo even after acquiring signal, and I must manually try to send it again. The stock app does not seem to have this issue.

That's HelixLauncher (not sure if it works on non rooted phones). Not sure which icons you mean as it doesn't show windows that you have open, so here's the rundown: It has an option to allow you to double tap on screen to preview your other homescreens, then tap on any of the preview tiles to move to that screen (those are the white tiles you see above the app icons). It also allows you to put 4 applications (not widgets) next to the app menu app menu icon, these 4 applications will appear in any of the homescreens you go to, just like the app menu icon.
Helixlauncher2 is great as well, it looks like the native N1 launcher but with the same enhancements as the regular helixlauncher.

Yep, also text to voice. Bloat is often ascribed to handcent but to my mind that conjures up slow performance or features tripping over themselves. I never have slow performance and the extra features stay out of the way unless you use them. Even the ads only show up in the menu and so taking no screen real estate while using the application. I call it a winner, any application that hopes to supplant it is going to have to be totally on its game.

Thanks for introducing me to Dialer One! Awesome app. Stock phone app sucks.
I was floored that anyone would release a phone with a dialer at the level of craptacularness that is the stock dialer. No speed dial? I mean c'mon.

You can have the dialer up and swipe horizontally between the call log, favorites and contacts. I do not use favorites as the old school speed dial (press and briefly hold any number from 1 to 99) is faster. The predictive search works very quickly to get to any contact and is faster than using contacts itself. I dont even have a contacts icon on the home screen anymore.

Reason why I'm ditching Froyo and returning to r22 alpha of Modaco's desire port.

1) The browser doesn't have a way to force desktop versions of sites. Even with about:debug some sites will not allow it to view the desktop versions. This renders flash useless for me because the reason I wanted flash so bad was because I wanted to watch the Daily Show on my phone. And that website doesn't fall for about:debug while hulu does.
2) can't stand the one blink per 15 seconds notification light rate. (i know this will be remedied soon by some app)
3) can't install HTC_ime keyboard (im sure this will be fixed soon)
4) no pinch to zoom on mobile websites.
5) protected apps like documents to go are not working right. I paid good money for that app and I need it to work. I don't need just a document viewer but an editor. I'm sure that will be fixed soon but its not fun having an app that you paid 15 bucks for not working.
6) the very nice text selection method in the desire port.
7) Sense UI and all the great HTC widgets of course but I can't really fault Froyo for that.
I'll wait for Paul's next desire port with Froyo's additions. Until then I'll stick with r22 of the desire port.
try rotating the phone and then refreshing the page to make it load as desktop view..it worked for me
HTC Sense Keyboard is already working (except the voice to text bit).
Well I just moved from r22 to froyo and I think i will stick to froyo. I really miss the nice large contact photo's, favorites widget and a few other sense stuff, but FLASH 10.1 is a dealbreaker for me. My own website finally looks great on the phone, made it using Flash ofcourse.
my car charger stopped working when i updated to froyo.
i did a nandroid restore to my CM 5.0.6 and it worked just fine.
i dont understand...haha.
Um... I had NO problem watching Daily Show on CC's website. I'm stock.
You just go to the bottom of the "mobile" page and click on "desktop" page, then scroll down the left side and click on full episode under Daily Show.

That's one way to do it... but it's totally not necessary on CC's site... at least not to watch Daily Show or the Colbert Report. I tested both earlier and no problem. You just need to select the full desktop site from the bottom of the mobile page because the links to those shows doesn't show up on the mobile version.

Yup. The only site I know of requiring that is Hulu.
I'm happy to be corrected and note the corrections, no need to say "owning" and all that..
Anyways, when I did the UAS string fix and went to comedy central, and yes I went to the bottom of the screen to click dektop site or whatever, it worked but it still told me I needed to download flash player even though I already had it and it worked on other sites like dailymotion, and hulu. Maybe I need to try the rotate the screen idea, and I'll be glad if that works. That's good news if it does.
Pinch to zoom on mobile sites like m.facebook.com was helpful, it didn't zoom the whole thing, just made the font bigger, while keeping the same column format. It was useful to me. If it works in this then that's great.
And if the HTC_IME keyboard is having problems with voice to text input, then it's not fully working. I use that feature and find it very handy.
I still feel the text selection method is important as I am often copying and pasting stuff between emails and browser and chats. Its very nicely implemented in the desire port.
And yes I did reinstall docs 2 go multiple times. I know it will be fixed soon if not already, it was just a pain in the ass to first not see any of the apps I have downloaded in my "Downloads" on the market, and then to not have my most expensive app not work right.
And I love the native widgets of the sense UI.
I'm glad to hear that the flash is working and the keyboard are working, this is good news. I still feel that until there is a desire port with froyo capability, I'll wait.
If you need to either documents. You should get a winmo phone. Its why all of mine were winmo before.
But I rarely edited docs.
I went back to 2.1 (Cy's latest 5.0.8) because of:
- speed is really not all that different - at least not in the apps i'm running and the way the unit operates.
- battery life is a bit better
- trackball wake up - c'mon froyo....
- latest 720p video
- picture resize - they are locked in 1.2 mb in froyo...and I can get them as small as 130kb in 2.1
- always liked Cy's roms, anyway. WAiting for his froyo, I'm sure all tweaks will have been worked out - soon

[Q] MIUI like dialer / lock screens

Hello my name is Suarezn and I'm a Flashoholic...S U A R E Z N...
All,
In an ideal world I could have my cake and eat it too. That means I would have a combination of Sense widgets (clock, weather, text to speech that works, 4G, etc) some AOSP features and some of the MIUI stuff (Theme manager, lock screens, visitor mode, etc). I was in MIUI, but it was so darn laggy on my phone that I ended up going back to a Froyo ROM (Koni's Elite) can't wait until these guys start making GB based roms.
Anyhow, since these guys don't all work together I want to know if I can replicate some of these features in my current ROM. Specifically I really like the MIUI dialer and Yes I've tried several other ones (Dialer one, Youlu, Go, etc) and they're all decent, but what I'm looking for is one that has the functionality the MIUI one has when you're in a call (it shows several buttons...Bluetooth, add a call, merge calls, etc) All the other ones default to the sense style while in-call which lacks those features.
Secondly any way to have a MIUI style lock screen with it's own wallpaper and the features to show unread messages, missed calls, double tap and you have the music controls available, etc...
...and does anyone else besides MIUI have the Visitor mode feature? This is cool I think cause you can lend your phone to someone and they can't change anything or see your calls and messages.
I know people say that they're different frameworks, but I think it is possible to port these features (i.e. the MIUI music player is now ported to all these other ROMs).
Will I ever be able to have everything I want in a ROM...I keep my fingers crossed.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
No miui features will ever be able to be used on any other rom until the source is released (p.s. will never happen) yea the framework is completely different but would be able to port with source...same reason u will never see sense Widgets on anything other than sense...
The reason for the miui music is (I'm not 100% but I'm pretty sure...) because the app was not built into the framework but just an app from the system/apps folder which can be.easily pulled...and thanks to the wonderful devs here got it working everywhere...I too wish for a sense.miui cyanogenmod mix but unfortantly without source..its like creating honeycomb aosp right NW...sry man

The OP was looking for suggestions on apps and widgets that would emulate of give the same purpose. The above reply was of very little help. I really cant say about the the dialer but have you tried using widget locker? I believe someone made a MIUI lockscreen for it and I know for a fact at least you can have a separate wallpaper screen by using that.

Things MIUI has that no other ROM has which is why I keep endng up back on it:
1. MIUI Launcher
2. By far the best dialer
3. By far the best native SMS (fully skin-able and tons of features)
4. Native usage monitor with throttling (disable data/text after x, solid history)
5. Native firewall app (that can block out/in by data type)
6. By far the coolest File Explorer (with built in wifi FTP, and indexed results)
7. Native backup/restore of apps and SMS
8. Native Theme system that includes launch screen
If those Chinese Devs would just man up and give us WiMAX this ROM would be without flaw. A man can dream ...

Yea I see your point on that one! I didn't read it all the way thru my fault it was like a total 180 from how it was at the beginning.
Sorry if I didn't explain myself correctly...im0rtalz is correct. I know you can't currently port any of this from MIUI to a sense based ROM for instance, so I was looking for alternatives (apps or whatever) that could replicate it. I played with widget locker and it does give me some of the same functionality (actually more than MIUI). It's not as polished, but I can live with that. Now I only need some way to replicate the dialer (in-call options). I wonder if the reason why this is not done is because Sense doesn't allow it...just curious because it just seems like something a lot of people would want. The ability to add a call, merge calls, bluetooth on/off, etc..I know you can press menu and sort of get to the same options, but it's so much nicer to just have them right there in front of you.
Justin: You're correct those are killer features that I'm surprised other ROMs don't incorporate. The theme manager rocks...plus the ROM just looks much cleaner and more polished than others IMO.
Anyhow any help would be appreciated.

[APP] Stock CM Mms with sliding (hangouts) navigation 0.4.1

This is stock CM10 Mms with sliding conversation UI (Hangouts style). I made this because I like the interface of Hangouts but don't like the SMS integration. So, I prefer to have a dedicated SMS app and this is what came about.
Features:
Sliding conversation UI (hangouts style)
Pop-up reply (CM)
Quick reply from notification (CM)
Mark read from notification (CM)
Display who most recent message in conversation list is from
Breathing notification icon (enable in settings)
Contact picture widget regular, small, or gone
This is a work in progress so feel free to report any issues. That said, I've been working on this for a while and everything should run smoothly
Download from play store here (easier for me to detect/fix crashes, but slower updates) or attachment below.
To install:
Copy to device and install normally.
OR
Code:
adb install SlidingMms.apk

Awesome! I've been following this app for awhile, afraid it was discontinued. Its great to see official support for the n5 and that the project lives on!

Awesome! Just what I was looking for. Bug to report though. Whenever you want to send a message from the contacts/people app, it goes into the messaging app and force closes

After using this app for a few hours, I've noticed that its at the top of my battery usage. Is this drain normal?

no that is not considered normal. AFAIK it's a bug in the cm messaging app dealing with MMS wake locks. I have an idea how to solve it but it could take a few days. and I can't replicate it which makes testing very difficult. The solution for now is force closing the app.
EDIT: happy to say I pinpointed the source of the battery drain issue and am working on fixing it
Thanks @matt_stang. I too noticed it being top of battery drain list even though wake lock detector and battery setting said it wasn't keeping device awake long. It is my favorite replacement SMS app I have tries so far. Cheers.

Any chance of adding a secure box? I like to keep some people's text messages separate from the rest of my messages. I had to switch to Handcent because it has a secure box, but I really miss the CM customizations, like reply/mark read from notification.

Definitely have plans to add this. I also plan on adding "archiving" messages like in hangouts app.
definitely best messaging app on the planet! thank you so much!
for better improvement, when inserting someone's phone number (insert contact info), could you give another tick box for name? that would help me much. thanks.

This app is great. I always wanted the normal messaging app with the hangouts look. You are such a boss.

sweet, downloading now to see it
EDIT: Not really diggin in.. Too much color for me on the "sent" side.. and the 'block' bubble messages is too much as well lol.. Sorry, im VERY minimal.. To give you an idea of how much minimal i am, I use the stock mms app, and then download the Black Infinitum Theme, and that themes the messaging app PERFECT for my taste -- But anywho, to each his own! The idea behind this app is flawless tho! awesome job on it!
Oh my. Archiving messages would be perfect, since I loved it in Hangouts!
Would it be possible to add a speech bubble theme, as well as being able to hide avatars in message threads? Another mms.apk has it, which is perfect, but that one lacks archive function + hamburger menu, something I really wanted.
There is an option to hide avatars both in the main menu and in the thread itself. It's like the first options in settings. I don't mean to be rude, but did you even look before you posted? I use it like that. No avatars to be seen in the app at all.....
