What steps for wifi tether only? - EVO 4G General

Phone has S-ON and 2.18.001. I just need the wifi tether app, so what exact steps should I take to get me only that app? Thanks.

You need root, please search.

Thanks. The problem I was having was did I only need S-Off or root or both. Also I didn't know about if I needed the watermark thing. So I needed info to allow me to get that wifi app and not any extra steps. Let me see what I can do.

The easiest way to get Hotspot working is to actually pay for it . . . that being said:
You just need to unlock the bootloader using the HTCDev.com method, and install a custom recovery. You can then flash superuser, which will provide root access on your current ROM.
With the unlocked bootloader, you don't need to be S-OFF to get root.

OK captain, I gotta ask. If you unlock bootloader, doesn't that create S-off state? I'm kinda confused by that bit of quote. I know you know more about this than probably anybody, so I'm just curious.
(I haven't messed with any of the new stuff, I still have .76 eng bootloader from 17mo ago, ...I'm only asking out of curiosity and trying to keep up)
Thanks

Nope. Not with the HTCDev.com unlocking process. It'll show "UNLOCKED" at the top of HBOOT, but it will also still say "S-ON". And you can still have a custom recovery, and flash ROMs.

The .85.xxxx boot loader is the engineering bootloader. The .86.xxxx is the stock bootloader. either the ./gfree will work (make sure to check out the Post your eMMC serial number thread) or the root.sh script will work.

Dont think we have a way to flash the gingerbread bootloader, but i think the eng bootloader that you have is better for root anyways.

[Q] When will root be available?

OK, i recently got the OTA update for 2.3.4 on my T-mobile mytouch 4g. I was temp rooted, as to get my feet wet because I was new to root and the whole android system. I temp rooted with z4root. Can anyone post updates for anything on rooting 2.3.4+? This thread can be for all updates, or for just you guys to help me. You choose, but can you at least help me? thank you!

it will be available when the devs find out a way to s-off. just be patient.
as of now, downgrade to 2.2.1 to root and s-off.

Just like he said the best way is to downgrade through that method. And perm root either by the advanced way cyanogen wrote up. Or more user friendly ones that just require terminal emulator and not adb. u can find any of them through basic searches or through the development section.

1-click root like Z4root isn't available for any phone with Gingerbread 2.3.4 and up.
Judging by some posts on various boards, it won't ever be available, since developers aren't working on any such solution.
You can read some entertaining read:
http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/...otloaders-rooting-manufacturers-carriers.html
And remember some things:
1) Since that time, Samsung and HTC has officially declared they aren't going to lock their bootloaders. Actually, Samsung kept it open all the way, and HTC declared they're going to unlock them starting this summer.
2) There was no easy root app for Gingerbread 2.3.4 ever made, even though an exploit exists that allows temp-rooting. Which means - there are no devs interested in making rooting easier than it currently is, or they're prevented from making rooting easier.
About devs not willing to make it stupid easy to root anymore - you might read Cyanogen's post somewhere, also from several months ago.
Ok. I've researched, and found something called GingerBreak, but I don't really understand it.

To restate what Jack_R1 said. There is no root for gingerbread on this phone. It's simple enough to revert back to 2.2.1 and root once you are there.
[in my words]
If you afraid of ADB and the SKD, and you are to lazy to do some research, you shouldn't be rooting your phone anyway.
[/in my words]
now i took the time to put all of the basic information that you'll need in the newcomers thread. Link in my signature. Take your time read though that and you can root your phone. Regardless of the version you are using. And there is a link, with video, for you setting up your ADB.
Thank you all for replys. you can keep them coming if you wish.
neidlinger, in your signature, it says how to root with root.sh. Is this a perm root or temp root? And is it compatible with 2.3.4? How would I unroot?
EDIT: read on xda that all i need to do is download the froyo rom, boot into recovery or hboot (sorry i forgot), and flash it? Am i correct?

YES!! How do i get into hboot?
EDIT: sorry, a simple google fixed it. And all i do is flash it, then im on stock froyo and can do any root i want? Will all my contacts and apps be saved and stuff?
Wait how do I flash a ROM from hboot? And afterwards, how do I get out of hboot? Sorry, I just want to be extremely sure I don't brick my phone or f**k it up in any possible way.

well, once you have the PD151IMG.zip in the ROOT (not in any folders) of your sdcard, the bootloader/hboot should recognize it, and will ask you if you want to update. hit yes, and the rest will be done for you. DO NOT PULL THE BATTERY DURING THE UPDATE PROCESS, THIS WILL BRICK THE DEVICE. after that just reboot (first reboot should take longer than usual, it's normal)
if for some reason the bootloader/hboot isn't seeing your PD151IMG.zip, then redownload the zip again.
It did the no image thing... retry? My stats are:
Glacier PVT SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-0.89.0005
MICROP-0429
RADIO-26.11.04.03_M
eMMC-boot
Apr 14 2011,13:18:22
EDIT: I connected it to my computer, and the zip file is named PD15IMG and a lot of other things. Do I delete all of that and rename it PD15IMG.zip?

[Q] Mytouch 4G official bootloader unlock, benefit?

I want to ask what is benefit for MT4G ? is it make the root process easier on official GB ROM? or what...? (confused >_<)
Here is a discussion about it...am sure htc will be able to unlock it easy, but sound like its not worth it...

There really is no benefit. You can't revert back to S-On if you root your phone using that method, so if your device somehow gets bricked, you have no way of reverting back.
I would still HIGHLY recommend the old ways... The right ways.

btw, when you use the HTCDev method to unlock, it Stays S-On. the top of the bootloader will say "Unlocked", therefore making the device permanently unlocked. THIS PROCESS CANNOT BE REVERTED. ONCE YOU UNLOCK THE HTCDEV WAY, YOUR WARRANTY IS DONE.
so no, i don't think "fastboot oem lock" will completely do it
bootloader will show "Relocked" instead.

There is a way back
There is a way back, I have a Glacier, made the mistake of taking the plunge, but it is a SERIOUS PAIN to get back.
Took me all weekend to find a way to reflash the engineering hboot, but finally got it.
No locked or Unlocked notice at all.
The question is - if you're able to flash kernels from recovery with Eng HBOOT, or if it skips them just as HTC-Dev-unlocked Ship HBOOTs would.
Strange question, here.
With the Glacier when you dev unlock you have to flash hboot # 89.0001 into the phone to unlock. Since I was able to reflash the 85.xxxxx eng hboot back in could that mean that others would be able to revert to an original? Meaning flash in the hboot for their phone that has never been unlocked, and regain s-off?

And if you're looking to do it from a Mac, I used the instructions found here:
http://orville.thebennettproject.com/articles/droid_razrm_root.html
I may look at making them a bit more concise as it requires several cut/paste commands which could easily be thrown into a shell script. And it's a little inaccurate as to file locations. But it works.

Now I'm new here in this forum. I came from evo 3d. So when you mean root you really mean unlocked bootloader or true s-off. Root and s-off are two different things.
S-off gives you access to all the partitions in nand memory
Root gives you access to special functions within your rom
Unlocked bootloader only gives you access to system, data, and recovery partitions.
Not trying to sound like a douche. Im very sure you guys are not noobs. But it might be confusing to someone who gets those terms mixed up.
So as I have stated I am new here and am interested in gaining s-off or unlocked bootloader.
Does this method give you a unlocked boot loader or s-off?

Yes it is confusing !!!
And that was what I was looking for initially.
But you just described what i was looking for.
But to crush your questions.
I don't think we have gained S-Off and unlocking the BootLoader is like extremely hard
Let us know if you find a way to do that.
Root gives full r/w access to system. S-OFF is irrelevant on Moto phones...
Unlocked bootloader is essentially impossible on retail.

Hi, I've been trying to fully S-OFF my buddy's new MyTouch 4G Glacier that he ordered online. It has Android 2.3.4 and I was able to unlock bootloader and put clockworkmod touch recovery. But he wants a Rom and custom kernel. Flashing kernels won't work via fastboot or they do, but don't actually apply. I wanted to just fully Perm-S-OFF it with the guide in Dev thread, but the link to Visionary+ apk isn't working. I've searched n searched on XDA and Google. All links I find are either BS malware or 404'd lol. Does anyone have a copy of it I could get? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. -Drew

Why can't you flash as is? Did you unlock the boot loader via HTC dev unlock? If so, you will need to relock it, then find the guides to downgrade to froyo, and then root from there...
Well my intention is not to give bad advice but rather state what worked for me. If this method can lead to a bricked device then i appologise for the bad info.

Such a lot of mess...
A phone unlocked with HTCDev should receive custom kernels, if it doesn't - it means the kernels aren't being flashed correctly and OP should learn to use fastboot.
A phone unlocked with HTCDev won't get downgraded unless relocked.
Without downgrading there won't be S-OFF of any kind. Neither gfree nor root.sh work on Gingerbread.
Rooting isn't S-OFF.
Putting custom ROM on isn't rooting.
To flash anything from recovery only, without using fastboot, S-OFF is required.

I have achieved S-OFF a long time back and updated my ROM. I needed to use the terminal emulator the other day in super user mode but was denied SU access. Remembering back I had used visionary to obtain root and thus su access. Visionary no longer runs (it appears to lock up in a black screen) nor am I able su access.
How can one obtain su access after s-off has been achieved and the phone has downloaded an update?
su reports the su binary is out of date.
