Big phones - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

we are all members of this big phone club being galaxy note owners, I'm used to the "that phones too big" comments now having come from a Dell steak 5. (great phone FWIW I would have stuck with Dell had they made a successor to the steak 5)
But what I've noticed lately, if I look at a video on a mates phone, I immediately go to hold it in landscape with both hands and find myself exclaiming "wow you're phone is so small" in a critical tone.
Funny how the tables have turned.
I couldn't go smaller than 5" now
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA App

I'm also an ex-Streak user so I'm also used to the comments and these have multiplied now I've got the Note ... At work, I'm known as the girl with the TV sized phones ... Love the attention though just as much as I love the Note
I used my sisters iphone 4 the other day and it felt and looked like a toy ...

i had a waitress tell me something was wrong with it... lol

Ex-Streak user here also. Had it for over a year...about the only time someone says "is that your phone" now is someone that has never seen the streak before.
I just wish some woman would say "isn't that too big".....JUST ONCE!

I had 5 iPhone4s users laughing at the size of the note in the pub on Saturday. They were soon silenced by the 1080p video quality.
By far the best camera of any phone I've ever had.

Still waiting for the streak 2. And now the note 2.

My Galaxy Ace (S5830) feels like a toy now. I can never go back to a "normal" smartphone.

i've been using a 28 inch montior for my work. It is under repair these days and I am using a 19" loan set...
Everytime I switch on this loan set of mine, I get really frustrated and feels like throwing it to the bin.
Sorry to say guys, once you start using the Note, there is no way of going back.

I saw the pics of the S3 @ the samsung [email protected] the no border screen....but I'll pass....now I 'll wait for Note 2...the next upgrade...

For those that think the note is too big
THIS was my first "portable" cell phone back in the day.
IF it lasted all day, with a total of 30 minutes of talk time, you
were lucky!

Just pre-ordered my Note today! Its funny to see how many Streak ex-pats I see here, I recognize a lot of names from the Streak forum. Look what you started, Dell!
Good for Samsung, anyway..
I wonder if the At&t version will be different enough to warrant its own forum..? I hope all of the Roms and mods here will work on our Notes, there are so many compared to the DS5 forums...
Can't wait!

Same here, current Streak user, and pre-ordered on Sunday...can't wait for it to show up!

yes it will have its own forum its to different from the N7000 no roms will work from here on the north american note.

I really think Dell missed a trick not bringing the streak 2 to market, I really liked the look and feel of my steak, if they just made streak 2 thinner lighter and faster with a narrower Bezel but kept the same look as the first streak, I would have got one without question.
Shame

Streak Ex Pat
Yep Streak Ex Pat here as well... Pre-ordered on Sunday... Gonna have to order a 32 gig micro SD for this one.... Movies stored on the phone as well as from Netflix looked decent on the Streak 5", can't wait to see what they look like on this bad boy!!!! So I'll need the extra room for more movies!!!
Dell shot themselves in the foot period. How does a company justify R&D, then producing an item, then not marketing it? I was reading how Samsung was worried that this would go the same way, but it's like Samsung is already ahead of the curve cause they actually have a commercial for it on TV... Dell had.... SQUAT... NADA, NOTHING... so Samsung will do fine I'm sure... and like the rest of us Dell 5' ex pats, there is NO going back to a smaller screen...
We ex Dell owners won't know how to act with a product that is actually being supported by the company that produced it.. It'll be like "WHAT?!?!? An update OTA from SAMSUNG? WITH THE PROMISED DELIVERY DATE?!?!? or WHAT?!?!?! DJ STEVE DIDN'T PRODUCE THIS VER.?????
Yeah... I'm a little upset with Dell, hope it doesn't show... HA! It was a good product though over all.

I used to be a streak owner too, lol.
Am now waiting for a Note 2.
As for a Streak 2, I don't think there will ever be one, hope I'm wrong though...

If Dell did decide to revive the Streak after seeing the Note do well, I'd still not even consider going back to them UNLESS they were the only option. I couldn't ever trust them to support the product, so Dell can just save their energy. In this economy you'd think you'd want to do all you could to keep your products looking great to attract more customers which in turn helps out your employees, which in turn helps out the economy (big picture w/ out getting too political here)

Review from engadget
http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/20/t-mobile-g2x-review/
While most of the hardware in the G2x hits the spot, we're a little underwhelmed with the display. The 4-inch WVGA (800 x 480) IPS panel looks good on paper but misses the mark when compared to the competition. Sure, the colors are rich and the viewing angles are wide, but the LCD washes out more than expected in direct sunlight and suffers from a significant amount of backlight leaking out from the edges of the screen, resulting in visible "stains" on solid, dark-colored content.

It's getting rave reviews, the only complaints I have read are the light leak and the Euro version comes with a hdmi cord and the us version doesn't. Other than those two complaints this phone seems to be a winner.
Oh damn, I'm still up in the air between this one and the SGSII. Looks like Sammy's gonna win in the display dept. This is pretty disappointing to see; especially since we know LG makes the screens for the iphones. SMH.
Don't see much of an upgrade from my vibrant. Now if it had a 4. 3" screen, I would run and get one today I hope we get phone with a screen that big soon.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
People should really wait this out. The Vibrant is more than good enough for now, why rush and get the newest flawed product.
I've had 3 phones in the past 2 months, lost a mt4g over the weekend, got a gs4g on Sat, returned it today got the g2x and other than missing the optical mouse on the mt4g, for what's out there currently this phone is by far my favorite....but really how come phones are now lacking camera hw buttons and notification LEDs, that has been irking me all week, and I would take a vibrant over a gs4g because of the internal storage
im trying to wait for the galaxy 2 but i doubt i will be able to wait and find my self getting the g2x
Played around with it today at the downtown Seattle TMO store, and the screen was a major letdown for me. I went wanting to upgrade. The kicker was when I asked if I got the upgrade they said I had 3 months before my 1 year for discount to upgrade. Grrr. Wonder if the HTC Sensation will be out by then, bigger screen, faster processor, etc.

usually, perfect.
I wouldn't count on saying that SGSII would have a not-working GPS..
i'm sure Samsung learned from their mistake..
i mean... the GPS bug was found out like a month after Vibrant's were sold...
millions sold.
They can't re-call millions of sold products...
i got one today. while i would love to get a galaxy s II im thoroughly frustrated with samsung.

Indeed. At times it seems some people buy phones here just for the sake of having a "new" one. Why change when you've a device that works just like you want to? Better specs aint everything, looks can be deceiving.

You're right but everytime I compare this with my Olde Cliq, I piss off .Except for the not too good speed, everything works nicely and its GPS just simply blow Vibrant one out of the water (locks within 5 seconds no matter what roms I put on it Eclair, Froyo or Gingerbread)
So the LG G2X runs the Tegra Duel Core, the HTC Sensation will be running their Scorpion duel core chip, and the Galaxy S2 will be running what processor?
I remember seeing something about the HTC duel core not being as good as the Tegra 2's? how about the Galaxy S2 duel core?
I know its a lot to ask, just wondering if anyone remembers seeing that HTC chip was not as good as the Tegra or what the Samsung will have.
I think it will be good to compare this as it seems like these are the 3 phones many of us are trying to decide on/wait for
Got my g2x on Tuesday, and rooted it last night, the screen is a let down my is minor compared to some overall love it, someone just finished recovery and cm7 or gingerbread STABLE real soon.. the only Sammy products I will buy here forward our their TVs

As in i hope i do not screw my phone up, it all started when i first laid eyes on the white version of the gs2, i had to have it but since im in the greatest country in the world i knew i would have to shell out another 600$(out of the question). so i hit the webs amazon, ebay and finally i found a website that had the parts to buy. Where did you get the parts?
I was in the same boat as OP. However, seeing the demand of the galaxy s2 is still high (especially on my local craigslist), I just decided to sell my black sgs2 and bought a white one. Sold my sgs2 for $550 (could have gone a bit more but i was in a rush to fund the white one) and got a brand new white one for $670 incl taxes. So thats a difference of $120 for getting a bnew authentic white version of the sgs2 without the hassle of ordering parts and doing a little diy.
Nevertheless, this is a great alternative for those wanting to change colours!

Your right it is a great alternative versus shelling out 600 more dollars so to everyone in the market for a color swap I say go for it it was a simple process of taking out one piece and putting it into another piece don't be scared to try it just remember to also change out the speaker lol because even by going this route it's a great way to get an authentic white galaxy s II, now next up all I need is that new 64 gb microsd card it's been tested on the gs2 and it works so my phone is about to be an authentic beast!!!!
Not a fan of the white GS2, but I do think you did a fantastic job with the port. GJ man!
could you provide links to the vids you used for helping you understand which screws to take out and what not to touch ect?
looks amazing btw, great job.
I sold my black i9100 for $629 on eBay 10 days ago and bought the white i9100 for $559 from mobilecityonline and had it the next day..... not only did I not loose money on parts, I made money! And...... my warranty is not void. Not trying to put you down, good for you OP. But there are better ways to go about this I believe.... I own a mobile device/Mac repair shop and do these conversions (or do some like these) everyday... no way I'm tearing apart my baby unless I have to! Congrats though bro, its beautiful!

I'm a phone geek any way so who knows what phone I'll own in the next couple of months got to many to choose from but that galaxy sII HD sounds very interesting

He was with me in the worst of times (Sony x10), and the best of times (HTC sensation, Samsung Galaxy S2).
He helped me not to lose my way (GPS), and always had something funny to say! (Youtube, twitter, joke of the day via google)
He always disliked fellow OS's that thought they had something he didn't (apple, blackberry, and most of all.....windows)
But he was NEVER a hater.....
He was the original TRAIL BLAZER, as we can all attest to his sense of voyeurism, and his want; no NEED, to be the pioneer and game changer in the washed out industry of cellular.
How can we forget his track ball that notified us who was contacting us? Or was that his way of saying.......... "Don't you forget about me." (Simple minds)
In my mind he will always be number 1. And his good friends CM7, MIUI have and will always have fond things to say about him.
I remember Steve Kondik saying once "Do you remember that one time he forgot to flash the gapps??? How embarrassing, HAHAHAHA!" It wasn't funny back then, but as time went on, the humour of the situation began to shine thru! I saw my N1 crack a smile......
He went thru numerous surgeries, swap-outs, re-boots, and firmware upgrades. And lived to tell another story.
He loved desert. Ones worth mentioning were eclair, frozen yogurt, and gingerbread. A funny thing about N1; he was always the first to the table with spoon in hand.
As we speak he is being sold for parts on Craigslist. However he was always greater than the sum of his parts.
Thank you N1!

How do you like it so far, coming from N1 to the GN, Ive been debating on it for a while now. Mines not dead yet got Medroid ICS running currently, but in the future when the prices drop and there are a few used ones running around, Is it a good phone worth getting. Basically what i'm asking is from your personal preferences a list of pros and cons about it.

One of the issues with the n1 was the lack of internal memory. That ALWAYS drove me bananas. That ASIDE, it still went toe-to-toe with the heavy weights out there! My thoughts are because it was meant to be a developers phone. If you were to look at the specs of the n1 against other phones in its prime time, you would think that it would not compare. Build quality was awesome, and with android it was a match made in heaven (thanks Cyanogenmod) .
I thought a bit about what phone to get next. Creeping thru XDA helped my decision on the gnex as well as the nexus one. Both devices had/have HUGE Developer support (see cyanogenmod, aokp , miui, fransisco Franco just to name a few......)
This was my deciding factor in choosing the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. As well as ICS outta the box with hardware acceleration.
Did I forget anything, lol?!

It was a good poem, but can't really agree to it being a sad day. I don't know, I guess I don't wholeheartedly attach to any phone I buy. Sure, it's a great phone and I don't know what I would do without it, but I wouldn't mind switching it for a better one any day of the week. Though, if my only alternative was an iPhone 4S, I'd stick with the Nexus.
Regarding the internal memory. That doesn't bother me much with the use of an A2SD script. But the seemingly unsolvable issue with not being able to download big market apps is one thing that really drives me crazy.

The death of a vibrant...

Hey everyone,
yesterday was a tragic day for me as my beloved Vibrant has fallen off my pockets because of my insecurities of not securing it safely after hanging up on a friend. I was washing my car, my friend decides to call me to and asks me if I can go with him to give him some advice for a new android phone since he's going to be joining in the android family. Unfortunately, after hanging up, I get a broken LCD touch screen phone and he gets a new one. So, without further a doo doo. here it is.

I would love to buy a new LCD Touch screen, but for what it's worth $85+, I might as well just get a new phone.
So, any suggestions for phones on a T-Mobile Network?
SGSII
HTC Amaze 4G
HTC One S (waiting on this for now...)
Another vibrant for cheap until sgsiii comes out. The ii isn't worth it in my opinion and the amaze isn't so good. Ive never been a fan of hard So no opinion on that.

Yup SGS 3 is supposed to have LTE support with out sacrificing Exynos and that is amazing..
I got the sgsii and regretted it. I should have kept my vibrant untill the 3 well. If you can afford phones whenever u want get the two but if not get another vibrant for 100-120 ans just use that

I would definitely wait until the SGS3 comes out as well... or when it is officially announced at the very least.
you'll find other phones to drop in price by then. personally i wouldn't settle for a "new" phone right now bc they're all generally on the tail end of what the trends have shown
at the very best, you'll end up with a phone that may not be completely LTE capable, a screen's resolution only able to boast up to 960x540, and a battery still in the 1600-1700 mAh range.. seeing that phones in the next few months will all have at least 720p screens, LTE, and better battery life.. i would wait it out
thanks for the input guys. I wanted to wait out for the GSIII to be honest and keep my vibrant till then. Right now I'm using the myTouch 3G/Sapphire I believe... garbage..
I'll wait and see for the GSIII.
I'm the same boat as you bro. I'm using a iphone 3gs while waiting dor the sgs3

If you wanna upgrade on the cheap, I suggest an LG G2X. Dual core, FFC, great support from xda, and its about $225-250 on eBay, and a little bit less on craigslist. This definitely is a great phone with a custom ROM.

wouldn't really call that a reasonable upgrade from the vibrant at that price..
dont mean to bash but having a dual core processor and a FFC for $100+ more over simply replacing a vibrant seems a bit much when a couple months of waiting will provide much greater features for the long haul

Well they were asking about phones like the SGS2 and Amaze, which definitely aren't worth it now. And he's looking for an upgrade, and that would be the most reasonable one, considering the phones ahead. But I can definitely see your point.
I couldn't stand having the Vibrant after I broke it twice. Lol

I went from a vibrant to a sgs2. I don't regret it at all. Sure the sgs3 will be better but honestly it won't be much longer after it comes out, that everyone will be talking about the next big thing. There are some really good devs over there. As some of you know Eugene373 just got a vibrant, plus we have a guy named thederekjay who is making unbelievably good roms and kernels. This phone will be around for a while.

Sorry to hear about your Vibrant. :/ If I were you, I'd wait it out before spending a good amount of money on one of the phones that are currently out. I'd go for the Samsung Galaxy Note (if it came to T-Mobile). SGS3 would definitely be worth the wait, though.

The note would be very cool if it ends up at T-Mobile otherwise I'd wait for the sgs3. As Much as I wanted a new phone bricked, roman and the other great devs have breathed great new life into my almost 2 year old phone with ics. I've never held onto a phone this long there just in my opinion nothing worth early upgrading to. Good luck

I'm actually leaving. As of 3/6/12 my internal SD card is corrupted on my Vibrant. Might disassemble and part out because the screen is perfect. Bought a SGS2 that got "Lost" in the mail..... that is a $350 hit as of now. It is SO ridiculous, the post office said they delivered it so they are washing their hands of the situation. I have spent hours between EBAY PAYPAL and USPS and it does not look good for me . Funny thing is just try to get ahold of EBAY customer service. I only got through after calling PAYPAL directly and then they transferred me to someone at EBAY. Have just bought a spanking new Galaxy Nexus with signature verification through FedEx so we will see about the funny business that may come with this most recent purchase.

How would you describe the GN2?

Not a smartphone, not a tablet, ...the future of pen and paper.
The modern day filofax?
It obliterates the competition.
To qualify, been a htc fanboi since spv. Loved how the wife's iphone keyboard never makes a spelling mistake, despaired how htc keyboard was useless. Blown away how everything just worked with the wife's ipad 3, unlike cheap android tablets. This leads me to this ultralight technological revelation, the Note 2. I've never used anything that you can write with a pen, that is so accurate. In business we still write so much on paper, this really feels like the future. Okay, I admit I'm blown away by it. And I never liked samsung mobli's before.
One criticism... this god awful cheap and nasty plastic chrome ring around the phone. Hellloo? 550 quid, give us some metal. The silver back of the iphone 5 is soo blinging tasty. But if metal adds weight, leave it off, the lightness of this device will make your jaw drop.
Happy rant over. Lol

Whenever some says, 'is that your phone?' I always say, "yes. It's more of a pocket tablet though".
My own rant: current media definitions of phone/tablet/phablet are STUPID.
Since when does something suddenly become 'something else' if it is .1 inches wider?
Does that happen with any other piece of technology?

I would describe it as the new Jesus Phone!
its a mini tablet, or a big smartphone. or phablet
OP, if you are impressed by this, try the Galaxy Note 10.1! It's incredible as well. Much better than any iPad I've ever touched.

I would say "it's a phone for people with everything big "
In Hong Kong, alot of high mid-age women holding it and they treat this as a mini TV. Only thing they used on it is movies movies and movies.

I will always consider anything smaller than 7 inches a phone. That said, a 6 inch GN might be too big. So it's a phone you can use IMO, no need to zoom in to everything. At least that's what I'm expecting it to be.
When someone says wow is that ur phone ... I say if u think my phone is big .. well u can guess the rest lol
Only kidding
One word to describe bloody beautiful
I get stares when making calls ... it is very much a talking point !
Its a galaxy S3 transformed into a super sayian

I just received my Note 2. I purchased it to replace my 10.1" tablet and I couldn't be more pleased with it. My ASUS TF700 & kbd dock go up on eBay today - I won't miss hauling it around.
I tend to think of the Note 2 as a mini tablet more than a phone but I'm hoping that perception changes a bit as I carry it the next month or two. If I can see using it as my phone and tablet in one device I'll be purchasing the T-Mobile branded version with my upgrade when the Note 2 is released through T-Mobile. My .16 year old son really wants one of these things as a replacement for his WiFi Ipad 2 (we're not providing him with data for his phone - he'll need a job for that) so I'll trade him my international Note 2 for his Ipad if I doget the T-Mobile version.
Maybe it's a phablet. Time will tell.
GN2 is A Phone or Tablet with Magical stick (Jadu Ki Chadi).....
The phone wich can wash clothes...gives cool air from speakers..sends food and other things via attachment or bluetooth....and entertain you like GF.....
In short it can replace WiFe as well...LoL....:banghead::banghead:
