I know there are plenty of threads about G2 hinge issues, but I'd like to know about your Desire-Z keyboard hinges now that it has shipped.
I've just received my second Desire-Z this morning and it's probably worse than the first one. If pick up the phone, absolutely horizontal, from a table just by holding the upper section, the keyboard just falls half-open. Surely it shouldn't be like this? Here's a quick youtube video I took of my first phone:
Just wondering if I've been really unlucky, or are they basically all like this? I really hope not...

Mine does exactly the same. I'm not sure if this is normal or not, but I'm not very happy with it.
My other concern is that the screen wobbles back and forth when I have the phone closed if I tap on the left and right edges.
I think this is probably a design flaw rather than a specific device problem. You'll probably find they're all the same

Cant quite tell what the angle is in the video.
If I pick up mine by just the top piece then it droops, but doesn't slide out.
If I hold it upside-down by the base it droops, but can't slide.
Whenever I pick up the phone though I hold it by the base, so in normal use it's perfectly fine.
I'm basically assuming that the spring should be just strong enough for the phone to hold itself together (i.e. without the keyboard dropping away at all) when it is gently lifted up from a flat surface. That's the benchmark I would want to see anyway, and neither of mine will do that.
I might take this up with HTC and see what their view on it is - I just hope they don't do an Apple and patronisingly say "you're holding it the wrong way".

I've just sent off an email to superEtrader asking for a refund as I'm not happy.
I hope they take it back without any hassle since their website says I can't return it if its been opened. Someone on here kindly pointed out the Distance Selling Regulations say I can open it and play with it (I have the PDF stored on my PC!), but I don't want to have that sort of hassle.
my phone has the same problem as the video.
Also, the screen slides down when im lying down, holding the phone by the keyboard.
My phone isnt quite a loose as in the video, but it does droop if I pick it up by the top section rather than the base & also if I am lying down and hold by keyboard it will start to shut... I kinda expected to have a loose hinge based on reviews that I had seen for G2 & at this point its only a very minor niggle, so I wont do any return until I find out there are Desire Zs out there that actually have a firm hinge.
On another note, I noticed yesterday that the black backing of the keyboard is a bit bubbly.. Im hoping that the backing wont start coming away down the road... but I guess only time will tell.
I found it hard to do what was shown on video, I never grabbed phone like this before. It never opened on its own even slightly. Also owned TP2 and never held it by the screen. I dont think people would actually ever hold it like that.
No offense to anyone, I just dont see any issues with my hinge. I know it opens when I hold it like on video or upside down, but If I havent read some posts, I would never try it.
This is just my personal opinion on the "hinges"
The design is for the way we hold and use our phones.. I feel for you bro, but noone holds their phone at the angle your showing this at..
I have had no problem at all yet with the everyday use of this beast)

Honestly, at first it bothered, but really, it really starts to make sense for me now how it acts. If our hinge would be stronger, it'd be more difficult to open it and might have us actually break it.
Also, when I hold it while typing, I instinctively put my index fingers along the side of the keyboard/screen (once it is opened) and type with my thumbs. That way, it's impossible for the screen to fold back in closed position.
When I pick up my phone, I really don't pick it up by only one of the parts (screen/base). It's actually quite heavy at 180g and if I don't want to drop it, I rather pick up nicely and firmly.
So, really, after 4 days with my phone, the thing that bothers me more now isn't the screen, but the weight difference between my old Samsung Galaxy S (with gel back) and the Z.
Actually, funny anecdote, while playing Angry Birds, I actually opened the keyboard so I had a better grip on the phone.

I think I'll just keep mine until we get confirmation that better-designed Desire Zs have been produced. The replacement is from HTC and not my supplier, so I should be able to do it at any time during the next 2 years... right?
Mine is pretty solid - I even text in bed and it doesn't fall. I have opened the keyboard once or twice by accident, which is quite funny..
Desire Z on Bell Canada Hinge problem
I have already gone through two DZ's and both have the "weak" hinge. Thankfully mine does not do what is shown in the Video in post #1, thats definitely a defect in my opinion. Just to compare notes on a relative basis here is what mine does.
When the phone is closed I turn it sideways (landscape) lift it from the bottom and then press on the left and right edges with my thumbs. The screen snaps nicely into place. If I then grap the device by the top two corners of the screen and lift it straight up and hold it perfectly horizontally the keyboard drops down. However, if I lift it up at a slight angle the keyboard remains "attached" to the screen. It seems as though there is a magnet of some kind holding it in place.
I instinctively hold it with forefingers and thumb to type much as I do on my Motorola Milestone which slides straight up and down and has no "hinge".
As for lying on my back and typing in Bed if I just hold the bottom portion keyboard along then the screen drops down. HOWEVER that is an extremely awkward way to type for anyone I would imagine.
The question is, did HTC design it to work in this way knowing that people "instinctively" do these types of actions in this way?? I am not sure they conduct such a detailed ergonomic study. There are people that have no hinge issues at all, but unless they apply specific tests as I did here it would be difficult to know if they are experiencing similar problems. If they are doing what comes naturally and holding it as nature intended then they would not deem that there are any problems.

This is worse than the "Is my trackpad wobbling?!" threads on CrackBerry. It's supposed to be loose so you can open it with one finger, according to HTC. If you don't like it, take it back (you can definitely get a refund, since it's only been out like 4 days or whatever) and get a new phone. Seriously. You want a stiff slide, get a Milestone, then you have nothing to complain about.
Bought 2 today, they're (identically!) quite loose. I was really worried before buying that I'm gonna get the 'loose one' but to be honest it's not an issue as it's a very weird way to hold your phone and like others said you instinctively hold the device with your thumb and index fingers as that's where they end up when you open the phone. Furthermore, if opened and held vertically just by the bottom, the top part stays in place and only drops down at ~40 deg angle, so unless you text a lot in bed while holding the phone upside down and holding it just by the bottom bit, you won't have a problem. If I lift it up like in the video (it's actually quite an effort) the parts will separate.
Yeah, mine is the same, but dont know why people are making such a big fuss on it, why not for example make a big fuss on the speaker quality instead?
Yeah the speaker is ****, its the one thing that is crap with this phone...

Speed for me is awesome, and I'm still at stock speed, not tried overclocking yet.
My hinge is fine, just the same as when I initially got the phone (about two and a half weeks ago).
Unless your phone is faulty, I think the only people who have a problem are some who want to use their phone while lying in bed and holding the phone right above them. I never use my phone like that.

I do use it like this, every night, and no problem at all. The design is not faulty. When you hold it like that above your face whilst in bed the way the hand and fingers hold the device the screen stays open and does not fall down at all.

I know what you mean. I did actually try and the way I would hold the phone in that position it won't open for me either. Seems there are a few who hold their phone differently when laying down though, and then perhaps gravity means it does open.

Not strictly true. My hinge is fine - had the phone 9 days now and it's still as tight as it started out. My only problem is that the top half of the phone is not tight against the bottom half when it's closed - causing a tapping when using the touchscreen. I'm ok when I have a gel case on it which keeps the two halves separate and cushioned. Only problem is that this case makes it difficult to type on the top row of keys. I have another hard case which is thinner, but does not eliminate the tapping problem. I'm waiting for another case to arrive from the US which is rubber - hopefully will cushion like the gel, but be thin like the hard case.
I opted not change the phone since I have been told others have the same problem, and I didn't want to risk getting a loose hinge AS WELL AS the tapping...
At the end of the day this phone is pretty effing awesome otherwise (aside from a few little software issues - which will be fixed by devs on XDA no doubt), and I'm sure I will solve this problem one way or another, whether it's with a particular case, or worst comes to worst, sticking some of sort of thin cushioning material to the bottom of the top half of the phone - any suggestions, please feel free to let me know!!
I do wish HTC had just gone with a normal slider though, and this phone would be perfect.
My DZ is exactly as setspeed described..
I would add that while holding the DZ without the case mentioned by setspeed, it feels a bit like holding two thin phones combined together rather than one phone.
its really not as bad as it sounds but i would have liked it if there was some sort of latch or something to hold the screen tight to the keyboard while the device is closed.
I have the phone for two weeks now.. for the first couple of days I put a rubber case on it (the black case that T-Mobile sell for the G2) but i removed it very quickly as i felt it gave the phone a very bulky feeling to it.. the case is not very thin and the DZ is not the lightest of phones.
Im on the lookout for a thinner case too.. it would be great if there was a clear one as-well..

I also thought of adding some cushioning material to the bottom of the screen, I'm on the lookout for that as-well..
other than that, my hinge holds the screen tight in place while the device is open.. the screen opening while the phone is upside down is really not an issue.
I haven't rooted my phone yet, i don't really feel the need to.. I compared it to the old desire i bought for my girlfriend.
I think that the new Sense UI is a bit heavier on the system and so there are some places i feel the old desire is faster.
for example, when dragging down the notification view from the top of the screen, the new Sense gives you a list of recent apps used. sometimes it needs to populate that list and so dragging down the notification view is not as fluent as on the old desire. its not an issue because once it populates the list, it runs smooth very smooth as-well.
I think there is also a bit of lag while scrolling through menus. the lag clears after first scroll and then it runs smoothly again.
I'm sure that there are some optimized roms out there that take care of those small issues.
I had a hard time deciding which phone to buy - the old desire or the Z..
I'm actually really happy with my decision..

No, seriously. I've been wondering this for a while now.
I have big hands, so I almost never used my previous phone with one hand. I usually used the index finger of my other hand to touch everything. The only time this was kind of an issue is if I was eating, and I would often just use my little finger of my other hand since i was holding something.
So I have to admit, it blows my mind when someone sees all the pluses of the Note and their dealbreaker is 'can't use one hand easily? No sale'. What's that all about? I can kind of understand that people are just used to typing with one hand. (and someone to come out with a custom keyboard to fix that).
I can understand rejecting the Note because it doesn't fit in your pocket, or because it's too expensive. That's fine - expected even.
But rejecting the Note because you can't say, reach the notification bar with your thumb? What?

I don't have a frigging clue. I haven't used my phone with a single hand only since my Nokia 5800... People will say all kinds of weird stuff against things they're not used to.

Ha ha, I actually can use it one handed just about as well as the other phones I've recently used, including the GSII, so no problem with the above activities. My favorite way to browse the web is to hold the phone in portrait orientation with one hand, between thumb and middle finger (thumb on bottom and middle finger on top) and use my index finger to scroll and click links. This works fine on the note; I'm not able to do this with larger tablets, and for this reason I don't use them much. I usually revert to two hands to type, but do so with any size phone, as I prefer Swype.

In terms of screen size, it's not THAT big
I'm not sure what is difficult to understand about the need for one-handed use, quite simply there at tines I need to use the phone and only have one hand free such as about ten minutes ago when walking the dog. That said I do find I can generally use the Note one-handed but it just needs slightly different positioning.
One handed use is a requirement for me as well, as the poster above me said, there are just to many times when I only have one hand to pull of a quick tid bit of information. If it was not important, I'd stick with the 7" form factor.

Funny you should say that, we have an ipad2 and Ive never touched it since the note came. This is definitely a replacement for a tablet, as I have proved to myself...
The only thing better with the ipad2 is the smoothness, pinch to zoom especially.
Because one hand using is a thing of mobility.
In my opinion its not just to be able to reache the status bar with one hand its more then this. Sometimes youve only one hand free and the note doesnt feel safety in one hand, im tall (193) my hands are large but using it with one hand it always was uncomfortable...
I love the note for surfing but as a mobile device for every day its too big!
Since I've always used two hands for things like typing or browsing so, for me, the fact that I can hold the note in one hand and (forget about handwriting for now) hit the keyboard much more accurately and much faster with the S-Pen makes this phone that much more useful for me...
It´s kind of an odd question.
I too usually use the phone with both hands but sometimes its handy to have one hand free, so you can eat or hold a drink while you surf the web (or about any othe million things you can do with one hand).
I had a play with a demo one today. I could comfortably use it one handed. Though i apparently have big hands
It wouldnt be a deal breaker for me. But its certainly useful. Its generally the odd text, or a bit of browsing whilst eating a sandwich etc.
Walking the dog is an interesting example, hadn't thought of that one.
A pretty good reason came in another thread - so you can use it while standing on a bus/subway.

Anyone else notice this or is it just me? I need to get a cover for it and that will probably help a lot. It's the shape of the edges, its like they are designed to mess up my fingers. The slick back makes it harder to grip and therefore I have to hold it tighter than I would say my old kindle, thus making the ergonomics worse.

Yup I hate this...I even remove the slide cover to give my hands some slack. I have to hold the tablet with both hands just to make semi comfortable.

Well IMO I like the way they integrated the actual cover into the tablet itself, it makes a good stand for watching videos and stuff or playing games if you have a gamepad. As for benefits...hmm, protecting the screen may be one. I haven't seen a scratch and I've owned it for a month and a half now (my nexus 7 got hairline scratches in the first week -_-). The only problem is ergonomics, if you hold it incorrectly it makes it uncomfortable to hold after long periods of use. Overall I think its worth the buy.

I just ordered a case that's designed for the HP slate extreme. Cost me $12. Its a stand and cover and should fix the uncomfortable ergonomics. I'll post a review when it gets here tomorrow.

Adding a decal skin to the face and back have helped immensely. Ofc, there's nothing out there that's a custom fit for the Tegra Note, so I just used a the cheapest Nexus 7 skin I could find and it's an incredibly ill fit, but it's an improvement. This tablet is really heavy as ****. I wonder who the genius engineer is that wanted a big magnet on the back cover.

HEy could you potentially post some pics of ur tab now with case/skins etc I would want to see what it looks like .....
.........Also I bought an tegra note case just last week and I have tested it out properly..... I have had no issues except to get used to holding it when playing games.... but then I got around it but standing it and putting two fingers either side inside the triangular flap where it stands and rest the two outside fingers on either hand around the triangular flap.... It made it loads easier and comfrtable to play :victory:

Maybe you won't experience stiffness (tendonitis?) in the fingers. I didn't start to really notice this was going to be a big issue until probably a month into owning it. I'm sure there are other factors involved other than just the tablet, but I can say that I've never experienced tendonitis in my fingers before.
As far as photos, my skin looks like crap. It's all off center. If you're still interested I can post later when I get a new skin and cut it up & apply properly. I think the skin on the glass border shifts around a bit.

I think I understand where you are coming from from the fingers side... However i dont really think NVIDIA though the case through properly lol....Only for watching movies and drawing etc.. (Hands free sort of thing.... Although I play on it everyday xD)

I've had all the flagships one can imagine, yet I haven't changed my phone for the past 6 months now, and what's worse, I don't think I will change it before the 'M9' comes out. The M8 is simply the best device I've ever owned bar none. Build, usability, reliability, the list goes on and on..... Even the slight curve on the back of the device allows for incredible handling. It's like they've mastered every detail. Negatives? like everything in life, yeah. The power button is on top and not on the side and is hard to reach. The battery life could be better. The bezels could be thinner. The finishing (loose volume rockers, sim trays, etc) could be better on some devices. But these are issues available (along with a catalog of others) on MANY if not all other devices. I bought a Z3 a few weeks back and it didn't last a few days before I sent it packing. The only thing about that device was the battery life, it was unbelievable. But the ageing M8 still trumps it overall.
Am I the only one addicted to the M8?
One man's negative is another man's positive. Hated the power button on the side of my Note II. Always inadvertently hitting it putting screen to sleep. Much prefer on top.
Otherwise agreed. Hands down best android handset I've owned to date.

Actually a feature that I(Personally) am not to thrilled about. It's a great idea but it's overly sensitive, if you clean the screen the screen comes on and you delete an app on homescreen or place hangouts into a grouped folder with whatever else. Removes the clock widget...just does random nonsense because for reason cleaning the screen(Without lifting your hand) equates "double tapping". It started to annoy the hell out of me until I eventually disabled it.
Using the power button is only a fraction of a second longer and makes no real difference, especially if you constantly need to double tap when you actually need it in order to unlock the phone or... turn it a bit sideways first in order to get out of hibernation so taht the sensors work correctly in order to wake on tap. Annoying as hell, for me personally, it's a great idea gone awfully wrong pretty quickly.
Other than that, I have no issues with the phone really(Camera is a given but I don't use camera often so...) and I'm very happy months after receiving it.
i dunno, i had a at&t m8 over the summer and i loved it. now that i have the tmobile variant it just seems buggy as hell to me. gonna hold onto it until the m9 comes.
no need to use the top power button.

install any screen lock application, I personally use screen lock by Katecca, it works great, simple efficient coding. You can power of the screen using the gesture that opens google search. slide from the home button navbar towards the top. Good luck.

Agree, I use the app Screen Off. Does the same thing and adds some cool looking animations when you turn your screen off. I get a lot of "WOW that was cool, how'd you do that" comments when my friends see it in action. I rarely use my power button now but I like the location because my Vivid's was in the same place. I agree that the double tap to unlock is a bit sensitive but I still use and like it a lot.
I've still not found that very annoying thing about this phone and I don't think I will since I've had it for 3 months now. This phone rocks

Removes the clock widget...just does random nonsense because for reason cleaning the screen(Without lifting your hand) equates "double tapping". It started to annoy the hell out of me until I eventually disabled it.
Using the power button is only a fraction of a second longer and makes no real difference, especially if you constantly need to double tap when you actually need it in order to unlock the phone or... turn it a bit sideways first in order to get out of hibernation so taht the sensors work correctly in order to wake on tap. Annoying as hell, for me personally, it's a great idea gone awfully wrong pretty quickly.
Other than that, I have no issues with the phone really(Camera is a given but I don't use camera often so...) and I'm very happy months after receiving it.

Lol just hold the phone anyway except upright in portrait when you clean it. Screen will not come on. ?
Dt2w only is active in portrait upright position. Took me a bit too to think of that when cleaning the screen.

This is even cooler if you use Nova launcher as you can set it to turn off the screen by double tapping anywhere on your homescreen. Saves having to scroll to find the icon. And yes the CRT-off animation is cool.

I tried NOVA on my old phone and didn't really get into it.
Don't need to scroll to find the icon just swipe up from the home button up. :good:
I like the zoom out animation. I used CRT off too and is another favorite but I switch it about once a week.

It actually opened screen when it was lying flat on back, but anyways. Appreciate the tip but I'll hold off on that DT2UL for now. Like I said, pressing the power button isn't an effort at all it's rather fast and easy so...
I'm sure they'll improve more and more on those double tap to unlock but it's not something that I'm too concerned with myself. :good: :highfive:
It's a very handy feature IMO and saves wearing out the power button. Also ScreenOff app to lock the phone.

That's true of course. I just don't know about constantly tapping the screen, won't that also inevitably cause some issues with the touch screen? All that constant "shock" to the screen?
I actually think the Dot View case is better in that regard. It uses a magnet to unlock the screen. The magnet is in all the HTC one M8 phones so why can't all the flip covers at least have a magnet in place to automatically unlock the device once the cover is opened? Much more simpler, no more hitting power button to unlock, no more tapping screen to unlock.
Of course it'll be a different story for people that don't have flip covers for their phones but still.
I only use the power button to "wake" the device when needed, I usually just put it one side and let it lock/sleep on its own. So at least I'm "halfing" my use of the power button :silly:

I might be one of the few who doesn't mind the power button being on the top. but i have long fingers. At least they put it on the right side this time. Also Please dear lord, don't make those bezels smaller. It's hard enough as it is with these thin as hell bezels. I'll say this is a trend I'm gonna hate in 2015.

What's 'hard' with the thin bezels? It makes the footprint of the phone smaller. The only downside I could see is that it might be easier to shatter the screen if it's too close to the edges. But I'd take that for a smaller device.
As for DT2W being a replacement to the power button........ No Thanks. I don't like that feature one bit. First of all, it's a battery drain. The panel is always 'on' and waiting for input from the user. Secondly, it's way too sensitive. I constantly used to find the screen on when I carry my phone.
It takes literally a tenth of a second to push the power button. No need for tapping the screen. Just put it on the side next time please! Even Apple got it right with the iPhone 6 because they know it's too big to have a button on top, it's out of reach. Come on HTC, I'm sitting here saying you SHOULD COPY APPLE. That's how BAD I want this

Anyway, I usually get 8 hours+ screen time with my setup and usage... And I've tried disabling Dt2w and the rest, not noticeable difference in battery life.

Yep M8 like G2, OPO, iPhone have an extra processor to handle motion gestures etc, so there won't be any real extra drain on battery.

8 hours on the M8??? I usually have 4, or maximum 5 hours if I set the brightness at around 25-30%. I know it's offtopic but a few tips would be appreciated to boost battery life!

Look at this page on a browser and go the the battery help thread in my signature. Post 2.
If you want help there, see post 1 and 4 and post the recommended screen shots. Lots of help there.
It's an N5 thread, but that's fine, just mention you have an M8.
I do everything from post 2. But my usage versus yours could be very different. So screen time will always vary. ?
My average screen time in Gsam at the bottom is well over 8 hours... 22total.

5 hours could be completely normal for you depending on your usage.

The smaller bezels make it harder for me to type, and even harder to hit the edges of the screen. I use a case to protect my device. I don't drop my phone or anything, but there's always a chance of it sliding out my jacket pocket. The edges of the display are no man's land.
