It only works as MTP.
The only way so far to map it for easy file transfer is to have an adb-gui-wrapper that does file transfer and query.
Like the great QtADB, available in windows/linux/macosx flavour:

Do you install Samsung kies?
After I installed Samsung Kies,
when I connect my SGT7.7,
I can access the internal storage and external storage through file explorer.

I believe he meant Mass Storage as in , like a card reader, it assigns a drive letter.
No, unfortunately, SGT 10.1, 8.9, 7.7 and 7.0 plus does not allow the unit run other than MTP mode, so no Mass Storage.

That's why the micro SD slot and/or USB OTG adapter is so useful. If you ever want to copy stuff over to your device, that you otherwise wouldn't be able to via MTP, you can just put it directly to a micro SD, or on a USB device and then copy from there to the 7.7

Hi kazuni,
May you connect to SGT 7.7 with adb in linux?? The adb devices command just gives me:
List of devices attached
???????????? device
My PC is installed with Ubuntu Linux 64bit. I had add an udev rule with the following content:
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="04e8:6860", SYMLINK+="android_adb", MODE="0666"
TEST=="/var/run/ConsoleKit/database", \
RUN+="udev-acl --action=$env{action} --device=$env{DEVNAME}"
But it does not work.

Can copy over files

yes you can. I am using backtrack5 and ubuntu, both works with adb push and pull.

Good news for Mac users, Kies Mac works with the GT 7.7. Although the Samsung website only lists the Tab 10.1, it works perfectly with the 7.7

Any other way to connect the GT7.7 to Mac with USB connection?
I really hate Kies (as everybody I guess ) and hoped that Android Files Transfer worked but unfortunally not!
It works only with my Galaxy Nexus

Need to mount Galaxy 7.7 as Mass Storage
I'm having same problem. Need to transfer my itunes library via Easy Phone Tunes but not being able to since it's not mounting microSD card and if I just transfer the media files then it doesn't get all the track info like artwork and such.

Hey guys,
seems like mtp tools are not working in the newest Ubuntu 12.04. I didn't manage to get it to work. Google confirmed what.
Since I cant't get it to work, i am always booting to windows 7. MTP works great there.
Greetings
Daniel

I dont know about Linux, but For Windows users, add this to Totalcommander plugins, itt will apear as mediaaudio in the network connections in Totalcommander!
True, this is not mass storage, but close

Can the USB host 2 storage devices?

I'd like to get the files off the camera, but the tab will not have enough space for the transaction. I need to dump the files directly onto a portable drive.
Can the USB host a camera and a 1TB drive with a USB hub?
Thanks
Short answer.. yes probably, but will have to work at it.
I'm assuming it already recognizes your camera and allows you to access the files. If not, then you've got a whole other problem.
Using a usb hub, first plug in the camera and let it mount to usb_storage.
Then plugin the other drive. If it's NTFS Formatted, you can use NTFSMount (search these forums for it) to mount the hard drive. If it's FAT32, you'll need to use a terminal emulator to mount the drive manually.
like I said, you'll have to work at it..

You can also use an ADB shell to mount the drives. No need for extra software on the tab if you don't want.

Hm...I may have to try that. I haven't used the ADB shell, but I can't imagine that being too hard as long as the drives are recognized.
Thanks.

[Q] Mount Transformer as external storage like a phone?

Is it possible to mount it as an external storage just as an android phone does? On Windows you have to install the driver and it shows up. On my Mac it doesn't and just charges. Also can I mount the sdcard along with internal storage?
Also is there a way to mount my x10 as storage on the Transformer? When I plug into the USB port on the dock, I press mount on my phone but it does nothing while regular USB flash drives work just fine.
For Mac just download this http://www.android.com/filetransfer/. Works perfectly, allowing you to access your storage.

[Q] Please Educate about USB Storage Limits

OK, to get to this message, I had to read a warning about getting banned if not a developer thread.
Well, this is. Sort of.
I posted a question in the general forum and commented on the same subject in the Q&A forum. I think I know my answer but I would like to know why this problem exists.
I just got my tablet Friday evening. I figured it all out and was able to use external storage on drives and USB sticks. When I try to connect my phone as a disk drive, no files.
I am assuming that access to these files is for lack of root access, which I am not going to get because I immediately let it update to 3.2.
So, could someone tell me if lack of root is the answer and why? The phone does instantly show up as a disk drive on XP and Windows 7.
Thanks, and moderators, please don't kick me out.
Did you try mounting your phone, if you can? And yes root it would be easier with the usb mount app, or just use an app like es file explorer that can go into the root section without root then go to mnt and in one of those files should be your phone files, because i have an env touch and i use usb mass storage and it shows up on my iconia
Thanks. Yes, I did see the folder MNT but it did not show up. Using my usual file explorers, I can see the internal storage and the SD card. The next entry is the USB STORAGE where I find no files when the phone is connected.
If I connect an external drive or usb memory device, I can access all the files. When I connect the phone as a drive I see that nothing is there.
When I connect these same devices to my home pc running Win 7 and laptop with XP, they all connect the same way.
There is something in the OS that is not letting my tablet file system see my phone file system.
Thanks for the reply, I'll keep my eye on this thread.
I'm having the same problem, i can import photos or videos from the phone when the phone is on mtp mode (media transfer protocol) but when in file transfer mode (msc) nothing shows up in the mnt folder or in drive mount app. i'm running taboonay 2.2 with villain kernel. It works fine with external hdd ntfs or fat. When connecting the phone to my computer i had to install a driver from windows update and it shows as an xperia arc, do i also need a driver in my tablet? Has anyone already connected and android phone to an android tablet in mass storage mode?
Sent from my A501 using XDA App
Not sure Root has anything to do with it. I'm rooted on both phone and tab , and have no access to the files on my phone. When in "disk drive" mode, all it does is "charge".

[Q] Nexus 4 slow file transfer[Windows][Stock ROM]

Has anyone tried using MTP transfer?
I'm trying to copy some files from the phone to the computer but it seems impossible through MTP.
What other methods you can use to transfer files?
I had to use adb pull command to pull all my data before i unlock the bootloader. I'm assuming that custom ROMs will let you connect the phone as an external storage device but what about people who don't/can't install custom rom? Do they have to live with those slow MTP speeds while transferring something to the phone?

I tried everything and the only way i could get adequate speed was from adb.
I'm wondering why google didn't include external storage as an option to connect (in 4.2.2, i assume it's a software feature) like there is in some other phones that does not have sd card slot.
I don't think anything can fix MTP. It's so slow, that I have to use adb to transfer Clockworkmod backups.
I hate MTP so much.
The reason there's no mass storage option is because the geniuses at either LG or Google decided it was a good idea to make external storage a folder in /data/ rather than have a dedicated /sdcard/ partition.
Slow transfers with MTP on Nexus 4
** Note: You need a OTG cable with a power connector & ROOT
Nexus 4 - Stock ROM 4.3 ROOTED.
OTG cable with power connector
USB patch
StickMount app
An earlier version of Directory Opus (sorry, the trial expired and I did not note the exact version) seemed to do a good job of transferring files from the Nexus to the PC (Win 7), but when I tried it on another computer and it no longer worked (transfer stopped before it actually completed).
I tried the following and it worked for me:
Check these links:
http://www.androidcentral.com/android-advanced-usb-otg-nexus-4
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/orig-development/usb-otg-externally-powered-usb-otg-t2181820
Use the patch that is suitable for your rom.
install StickMount, connect the usb otg cable to portable drive (in my case a seagate 320 GB Freeagent), the power, and then the phone.
The drive is mounted under /sdcard/usbstorage/sd1
You may need the ntfs-3g file from Chainfire's site.
Transfers were at 7 to 8 MBps from the Nexus to the portable drive [NO PC/Windows involved]. This is better than MTP and DirectoryOpus [when it worked] which was at around 4MBps.
The other option is to use SuperBeam app.
DirectoryOpus might work, but you probably need the right combination of MTP drivers, DirectoryOpus version and Windows version.

N4 USB mass storage

I read it is not possible to do USB mass storage on the N4 because you would need position to be fat32.. and read that if you do enable it you couldn't read the partition on windows as it's ext4..
I run Linux so I can read ext4 no problem.. so is there a way to enable USB mass storage to use in Linux?
I hate the options we have for USB support to transfer files as half the time it don't work in Linux, and if I use on windows on other people's computers you need to download drivers..
USB mass storage you don't need any special drivers..
I doubt it, but hopefully when nexus 5 comes out they will give us an SD card slot and USB mass storage!

Won't happen for Nexus 5. SD cards are not liked by Matias Duarte. And I think they've fully have moved to MTP. I do feel your pain win Linux. But you can get MTP to work. I have it working on my Ubuntu machine
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4
I am using Kubuntu 13.10 and MTP is working very really well without issues, first Ubuntu version that have it working right for me.
You can also try Go-mtpfs which will mount the drive and you can manipulate the files just like UMS and using syncing app, but its not entirely bug free as of now: http://www.webupd8.org/2012/12/how-to-mount-android-40-ubuntu-go-mtpfs.html
I had mtp working, but seems only pictures and videos transfer.. no other file types..
Maybe I had something wrong..

Same here. I figured maybe I missed something. I have connected it using MTP and PTP. It will only allow transfer of pictures. I really need to know how to transfer files from computer to my phone. If I select zip to transfer it says not compatible. If I am connected to laptop and using Nexus 4 Toolkit, it recognizes the device, still can't manually transfer files though.
I've only been using Ubuntu for about a week and I'm having no trouble with transferring files via MTP. You need the Android SDK installed, just google it, I don't have a link. It seems to freeze up if I try to copy multiple large files, like a ROM plus Gapps for example, but it's fine if I copy them one at a time.
