[Q] Thermal spec - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'm in Finland for 5 months and it seems that it is 'extremely' cold out here. Normally it should be -15°C while it's getting down to -30°C! I was walking outside and was using the camera & gps to take some nice pictures and see how far I was from my destination. Everything worked just fine, only the touch-screen started to fail when I had the device out of my pocket for too long. It got random 'touches' everywhere on the screen. I'm guessing that it's just too cold out there, but I couldn't find the 'thermal spec' (how long will the defy work just fine).
Does anyone know this? Couldn't find it online (Only that you shouldn't charge your battery below 0)

I've lost my phone few days ago...
I've found it yesterday in the snow on backyard. He lay there for almost 2 days while the temperatures was about -10°C to -18°C. When I found it everything was fine... Except the battery It was only 3%
Maybe -30°C is just too cold

I can confirm that screen goes unreponsive at temperatures below -15 celsius. Then again so do my fingers
I digged into manual and it suggests not to use it below 0 degrees C. Good luck with that.

iam not sure about thermal spec but it is not advisable to use any electronic gadget in negative temperatures for long time...
But when it gets exposed to very low temperatures touchscreen feels unresponsive (found it from some open discussion forums for other mobiles) ..
But Defy is Life Proof !! so play around with it as u like !!

X10 As In-Car GPS

Hey guys,
This issue has been brought up in a few threads, but not properly discussed with a solution. Issue is as follows:
X10 + Gps Application = kick ass gps system with beautiful screen
Having the screen on drains the battery heaps, so I bought a in-car charger. The first one I bought was a crappy cheap one, so I replaced it with a good one that charges the phone properly.
THE ISSUE: After about 20 minutes driving, the combination of the display being on and the phone charging causes the phone to get quite hot (about 40 degrees C from my calculations). This triggers a feature in the phone to disable charging until the temperature reduces.
END RESULT: Overall, the battery drains even though the phone is plugged into power. It drains reasonable slow (about 40% for 2 hours driving) but is still frustrating.
POSSIBLE SOLUTION: I have not rooted my X10, but I was wondering if using the "setcpu" app to reduce the CPU speed to like 233Mhz or something once the temp goes above like 35 degrees may help. Could someone confirm or test for me?
INTERIM SOLUTION: If I really need the phone to charge, I just lock the screen while driving and listen to the voice commands. This results in the phone not overheating and charging whilst driving. If it helps, I use Sygic, Google Navigation and CoPilot, all with the same result of overheating.
It would be great if we could get to an acceptable resolution for this issue as this is a feature that I really want to be able to use often,
Thanks guys, look forward to the replie!
Starsky.
Also, running the .20 firmware on a generic UK x10
im on build .23 - rooted, i just drove about 4 hours with both Google Navigation & Motonav at the same time, had no problems at all!
im not using setcpu.
it might also get warm from the burning sun.... try placing it away from direct sunlight.
Thanks for the reply Joel.
Im in Australia so its winter at the moment, no worries about the sun
I have the phone in cradle connected to the air vent, so I did at first think the hot air from that may be causing it to overheat, so I turned the vent off but it hasnt made a difference.
It seems to be a random amount of time before the phone gets too hot, some days it happens after a an hour, other days it happens after 10 minutes, not sure what causes it. I might try rooting the phone so I can get .23 firmware and see if that helps, thanks for the feedback.
Cheers.
Since you have it placed in front of the vent, the air conditioner blowing cold air on it should be able to keep the temperature down

You may want to check your car charger output.
If the output is very high, say 1A, your battery will get fully charged much faster, phone & temp will be much higher than say at 500mA.
you definitely do need to check your car charger. I have it plugged in with Navigation on (which leaves the screen on ) and it actually GAINS battery charge. Looking at about 1% every 5 minutes.
I have same problem. Need charging while using navigation but it gets too hot. Will try to mount in front of airblower. Did not have this problem with x1.

I have the same issue here. The phone heats up quite a bit when using Google navigation and it being plugged in to charge. I'm not sure if this is normal.
Using Google uses both the GPS and Data functions and might be the reason why the phone gets warm. It works harder!
I use IGO 8 and have no overheating issues whatsoever. I am rooted and use SetCPU (using the default "on demand" option).
My battery lasts a very long time anyways, but charging during use it does not cause overheating.
BTW OP! On most cars, even if you have a individual vent closed. If the heating is on to the rest of the vents, that vent will still radiate heat as warm air is blown into the back of the vent fins and they will heat up. Put your hand over this and feel it to confirm. I use a windshield mount and the phone is in direct sunlight a lot of times.
thanks for all your replies.....
quick question, those of you who have said they are able to keep the screen on and charge at the same time...which charger are you using, the official SE one?
If not, can you post a link to where you bought it?
Cheers.

What's the highest temperature your battery got so far?

41 C (106 F) yesterday when I was waiting for my sisters doctor appointment to finish. Was playing Baseball Superstars for over an hour. lol
Usually its not too bad but that was getting rather hot.
Is there a level that's beyond safe for the phone?

Right now, the temperature is 32C on the battery. The CPU gets far hotter. When using RockPlayer to play some AVIs, the temperature jumped to the low 50s C. It was not a pleasant experience.
43c when playing games while plugged in.
yeah my CPU gets waaaay hotter than my battery
my CPU hit about 50C watching NBA highlight videos over wifi (battery was around 36C)
i'm running gingerblur on 1.57 if that matters
personally i think the phone gets EXTREMELY hot..
i havent had any reboots because of it, but im pretty sure my browser crashed after playing videos for about 20 minutes straight...cause it just exited to the homescreen out of nowhere
i wonder if this can be addressed somehow in a future update..i dont want to underclock my CPU cause i'd be surpressing the power of this phone if i did
Seems pretty common,i was scary at beginning but seems normal I get like 41° playing music over bt and browsing in normal its 27 I use set cpu to slow down when its higher than 45° c I never noticed I have random reboots I noticed when I check time since unplug weird

im not kidding, i swear, i really am doing my first post now to let EVERYONE know i just had my cpu go to 186 degrees!! i immediately took off the batt cover and it was HOT in my hands, i just installed homebase so i raced to accept the markets terms and conditions and downloaded set pcu and set it for 247 and triple zip locked bagged the phone and went to throw it in the ice box, LUCKILY i left the ice box out about 1 hour before so there was a bit of a pool of ice water for it to sit in, it is still in the water (for about 10 min now) let me walk over to it now, whew, its 73 degrees now, omgoodness, im afraid of the future now!
battery max. 44° C
but CPU (when watching movie online(in flash)) hits up to 70°C
winner?

I'm going to be very crude here. Two explanations for your 'problem'
1. Your seeking attention (troll). Evidence: 1st post on xda (Welcome btw) and poor grammar etc.
2. Your bending the truth (Liar). Evidence: My phone has reached high temperature before (not even 100 degrees) the phone will enter 'Emergency Cool Down' and you will be unable to use it. Also the temperature which the battery circuit will cut off power is way below 186 degrees. The temperature which the Tegra 2 core will send the THERMTRIP signal (or equivalent (im an intel guy)) is also way below 186 degrees. Finally, at those temperature, your skin would have been burnt.
Yes I know, don't feed the trolls, but i could not help it.
I don't think I've seen mine hit higher than around 40C. It usually hovers around the low- to mid-30C's range. Then again, I don't play many games, but I do use a bunch of different apps for video, music, and social media. Hopefully I never have problems with the temperature, though.
41 was the most I've had

ive been a member since july after always looking on here since ive bought the phone early march figuring i would need to post but in reality if i look hard enough there is never really anything to say that hasnt been said. so i dont post. Thanks for the grammar comment, i appreciate it. and i dont care about attention, my phone said it was 187, and it FELT HOT as all hell, and when i put it in the ice bucket it went all the way down to 63 as did my batt (my batt was only up to 111, normal in my opinion) so i think my sensor might be working ok, i should have checked in in set cpu and not that temp app that came with homebase, i was freaking out because if i would have done my phone in for good i can never return it because i tore it down to replace a cracked digitizer and my GF threw away my sticker that went behind the batt with my numbers on it, something att would never take back so i was in panic mode. I went online and a did a search for highest atrix temps and this is all i found, ill crawl away now and not share anything fantastic any more, but thanks for even considering the option that something might have a glitch in all the custom stuff we have now and that maybe the phone is able to handle more then we think, at least i will always know.
---------- Post added at 09:07 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:50 AM ----------
i also have been looking around now, and there have been mac books that have reached that temp, and lived to tell and i also was thinking that it was reading 186/7 at the core, not on the outside, so im not sure why the phone would burn me. A little extra info was that when i dropped the cpu i cactually dropped it to 456000 im not sure what to say but i felt it was big enough that i would share.

Sorry for being so rude, really apologise for that.
You said you fixed the screen by yourself, I would really check that to see if anything have went wrong.
Also you state the sensor stated it was that high. At such high temperature, Android will stop functioning and the CPU would also shut off. As such, I do think your sensor is malfunctioning. I wouldn't use that phone if I were you, if Motorola doesn't want to fix it, get some other 3rd party to do so. It's worth the peace of mind.
my battery got up to 47 degrees while i was watching netflix through the webtop connected to a TV the other night. when i picked up the phone to disconnect it, it was pretty hot and it destroyed my battery. it went from 65% to 15% after just an hour. i didnt check what the computer temperature got to though.

Just last night I watched a movie via Youtube through webtop to the TV (which I downloaded from the market but was unable to play normally due to "rooted' device)..and same thing..went from 45% to 4% in a little over an hour. Phone was about 46 degrees at that point.

[Q] defy battery got burning hot, phone turned off

Today while I was in a store and my Defy was in airplane mode, with the screen off in my back pocket - it got super-dooper hot - so hot I felt it through a gel case and my jeans.
I took it out and started to take off the case to get to the battery in a panic but by the time I got to it, the phone had already turned itself off (which is nice if that is some kind of safety feature).
It is a genuine, factory original motorola battery so this is not a problem with a fake battery - it was made in 2011.
Only thing I did recently was upgrade to CyanogenMod 7.2 on the 17th or so but I have been using it since then without problems.
Overclocking options are not on, I'm running with the stock Cyanogen cpu settings.
Airplane mode was on, gps was on, but that's it.
Remember, it wasn't doing anything, screen off in my pocket.
Any ideas? This was kinda scary - glad the phone shut down.
Is there any history of defective batteries from Motorola?
Maybe some program was running and loaded the cpu which drained the battery. The heat came from the cpu and the cpu is just next to the battery.
Sent from my MB525 using Tapatalk 2
Hmmm. Maybe, but when I yanked the battery out it was like a hot potato. Very very hot. I doubt the cpu could overheat it that thoroughly, more like it was being drained fast or possibly shorting?
I turn my phone on every morning from a cold start, the only program that was running was "MyTracks" (hence the gps being on)
I guess I'll keep an eye out for any problem reports with 7.2 on the Defy
It just worries me the times the phone is not in my pocket so I won't feel it overheating.
Is there any kind of app I can run that detects long periods of CPU use and shuts down the phone BEFORE the thermal trigger from the battery?
Does the Defy know it's own battery temperature by any chance? Maybe an app for that for the status bar?
I'm on CM 7.2 and my phone gets hot when I use 3G...

There's your potato burner Phone heats up a lot when GPS is on... On the top of that, you kept it in a gel case in your pocket on a (probably) hot day... What did you expect?
Thanks for all the ideas/feedback.
I turn the gps on every day and I have never had this hot battery problem before.
In fact it's on now while I test it and it's not even warm.
This was definitely an unusual event of some kind.
I just updated MyTracks in case there was some kind of bug fix.
As far as 3G, I do not have a sim in this phone (cannot afford any dataplan right now) and I keep it in airplane mode to keep the cell part off.
I found another similar report of the Defy strangely overheating the battery from last year:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1023423
I had this issue abt 2 weeks ago.... it was under my pillow and I went to grab it to check something n I had to let it go at once... I was on cm7.2, my guess was I had flashed so many Roms the day before and maybe the settings of CPU changed from 1 rom to another ... but did NT have this issue again so far .. now am on miui but never knew y it was burning hot zat day

Same problem here with cm 9; some days ago I found some stuck (blue) pixels on my device.no gps no wireless no data connectivity: it was the usb charger. It happened some months ago too and the stuck pixels disappeared but this time they are a lot....maybe I would put my device in freezer a night in order to recover my display ?_?

i'm still with the original phone (bought about a month ago). didn't change a thing, even not rooted.
a few days ago, was a hot day (about 32 c), same thing happen to me.
the phone was in my pocket in a rubber guard.
i guess it gets really hot in this protector... i took it down and waited a few minutes, then everything was alright.
i think this model might have some problem with overheating, so what i do is try not to leave it in the sun and take the guard on a hot day.

Thanks for your report, especially since it was stock - but I am sure it's not a regular "running hot" problem - because I have a very repetitive weekly routine and I've never had this burning hot problem before, never in a year.
Remember if they are in our pockets, the screen is off and typically programs are not running hard so the CPU should scale down to 300mhz, which should be very cool.
I installed this very basic and simple temperature monitor to put the temp in the status bar and so far I've never seen it go above 35c
http://www.appbrain.com/app/tempmonitor-lite/org.alldroid.apps.tempmonitorlite
It polls every 15 seconds which is all I need and no permissions.
Apparently the Defy only has a battery temp sensor and not a CPU temp sensor?
I'd like a better monitor with vibration alarm and a log but I am tired of all the overbearing apps with ads and "buy the pro version" nonsense and such.
Hi!
I used to have a CM7 with a chinese (really-really cheap) 1800mAh battery after the stock ROM (2.2 CEE); and I haven't experinced things like that. Mostly I measure the temp. with a widget (Elixir 2) and it was always below 35°C if I'm not wrong.

[Q] Overheating? confused !!

well switched from Nexus 5,,,to be honest knk knk feature sold me...also camera and build design helped but i am pretty disappointed by the camera it lags like hell in low light...even my note 2 still shoots better picture in low light than g2...
model D802
anyway now my concern is heating...its always stays in 28-30 degree in normal use....i am using Gsam battery monitor...stock rom and kernel,,,
another thing i noticed when ever i browse for a while or plays video in utube like 5-10 mins the area of volume button in the back becomes warm,,,is it normal? not extreme level but i can feel the warm...dont know abt rest of the body as using back cover...
any friendly suggestion plz??
peace !!
the volume/power button area becoming warm is normal. playing videos or games and phone heating up is what most phones do. keep in mind these processors dont have fans blowing on them. is the 28-30 degrees in celsius? i know farenheit and normally i wouldnt want my phone to get past 100 degree's F. 30 degrees C is only 86 F.
I once saw a G2 lower it's brightness automatically due to overheating (and the fun thing is I didn't play any games or videos, just normal stuff).
I think the G2 has overheating problems.

Not all G2s have this problem. Ex. My first G2 was perfect. No overheating, looooong battery life, high benchmark scores, perfect phone. Got damaged when snow moisture got into the speaker grill and shorted out the top portion of my screen.
Got my replacement yesterday and noticed right away the screen had a yellow hue, the phone over heated like hell and had horrible battery life.
Nothing I tried would fix the issues. Back to the carrier it went. Hopefully the 3rd phone is as good as the first. Trust. ..if I gave you my first G2, you'd be singing praises in the long battery life thread. That phone wouldn't die no matter what I threw at it...the best part..it didn't overheat either...there are good G2's out there.

Is 33-42°C normal temp or Defective??

So i feel like my Snapdragon S7 is getting hot when browsing web
And definitely when using the camera app.
Bought a laser temoerature gun and get between 33-42C after browsing the web
The latter was achieved during 1080p 60fps video recording for 5 min.
Is this normal or should i return it as tommorow is my last day?
Please comment what your temps are like during these apps.
Thanks!
My phone was getting quite warm when browsing and was draining battery. I kept disabling packages until this was fixed. Try this. Or if you are okay with full factory reset, try it and don't install any additional apps - just test the same thing first.
It shouldn't get hot while doing basic things. My phone only gets warm to the touch when I'm on VR and even then I don't consider it "hot". Disabling things or shut down all apps you have is not a fix either..it's just a workaround.. I would return it if I where you
My 935FD phone will get up to 96F (35C) while browsing or really doing anything with the screen on for more than 10 mins. It gets noticeably warm to the touch. I've already done a factory reset and disabled a few packages, but I'm not sure if this is just normal operation or not? Does everyone's phone get warm under normal use? What temps are you seeing after being in Facebook or just browsing for 10 mins straight? Trying to determine if mine might be defective as well.

When I browse the Web the phone gets warm to the touch and it's annoying.
I get between 82-89F degrees just browsing the Web and if I try to use my camera
It gets to 97F like in 2 minutes.
My phone gets warm as well ehen browsing with Chrome, using the camera or facebook app. My phone is with the exynos chipset. I'm too concerned that might be an issue. I have already tried resetting the phone but it still gets warm ans sometimes even hot to the touch.

According to , my phone does got up to 36 C / 97 F while browsing the internet this morning. I let it cool down to 27 C / 80 F and took a 2 minute 1080p60 video and it went up to 32 C / 89 F.
Can anyone with a temperature gun measure theirs and see how it compares to the system temperature (e.g. BMW or GSAM) ?

My phone runs about 36c never seen above 40
Hi
So I bought my GS7E a week ago .. I started to notice that it heats so much when I use it
I just don't know if this is the normal heat for it or not so I wanted to know from your experience
so at normal base when I'm not using it it stays at 34-35C
When I use it for whatsapp, facebook an normal light use it goes up to 37C
when I charge it it goes up to 40C
and sometimes when it's in the car on in my pocket and nothing is running in the background it can go to 40C too
that makes it annoying to receive calls or to hold it and put it next on my ear
should I just keep it is it normal ? or is there a rom I could download? what should I do?
Hello to every one. Bought gs7 just two days ago.
I noticed mine gets warm after about 5_10 minutes of browsing the web. Right now its about 1 hour and its temp is 34`c. If i dont use it it goes down to 32 after some minutes.
After 20 minutes of playing gta vice city it reached 35 and afer 5 minutes of 4k recording it reached 37.
I wanted to know should i consider it normal?
Many forums state that 40 degrees battery temperature is not unsusual . However, 3-4 beers is also not unusual, but it does do damage to the brain.
On batteryuniversity.com I found an article:
"Lithium-ion suffers from stress when exposed to heat, so does keeping a cell at a high charge voltage. A battery dwelling above 30°C (86°F) is considered elevated temperature and for most Li-ion a voltage above 4.10V/cell is deemed as high voltage. Exposing the battery to high temperature and dwelling in a full state-of-charge for an extended time can be more stressful than cycling. Table 3 demonstrates capacity loss as a function of temperature and SoC."
I think this is frightful.
My S7 runs at an average of 32 degrees. (23 degrees ambient)
After half an hour of Gear VR it runs up to 43 degrees.
This means that on average this S7 runs above 30 degrees!
Should I ask a replacement or is my logic totally flawed?
Hi,
Mine, with factory reset and nothing running on background (S Health and all stock google and microsoft apps disabled), is not going below the 34 degrees without doing anything..very annoying touching the back and feel it warm.. I think I will ask for a replacement or at least a check in a experience store here in London..

Mine has gone up to 40 Celsius I have the exynos version that what the phone info app say
i notice mine would run that temp on with 4g on. so i was looking through my phone and fount google sync was turned on and i turned it off. That fixed the heat problem.
Hey guys, i have the Chinese variant of the s7 and mine also runs warm just browsing chrome, though I have to use a vpn as well. I'm past the point of getting a return, but they say I can take it in to get it checked. Have you guys had your s7 tested and is there anything they can do if there's anything wrong with the phone? I'm very frustrated over this, as I thought there would be improvements over the s5. Mine operates around 35c according to cool master and it's frustrating having a hot phone. I'm thinking of getting the supcase so I perhaps won't feel the heat so much. Any thoughts or suggestions? Is it normal for the snapdragon s7s to run a tad warm? And, you guys use a case that prevents you from feeling the heat? It's hard to use this phone naked, as the whole thing is metal and glass, so it's hot in your hand.
