Quick purchasing (in US) questions - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

I want a galaxy note. (doesn't everyone?) Sadly, Samsung neglects those of us in the US, making us wait months and months after a phone is released before we see it. Even then, we only get the "carrier downgraded" versions.
So, I'm going to order an unlocked version online. Actually, I just placed an order with amazon.com for one that comes with a 3rd party 90 day US warranty, and is described as "Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Unlocked Cellphone--US Warranty (Blue)" (Looks like I got the last one they have in stock, too.)
Does anyone have any idea what "(blue)" is all about? Is this the same Galaxy Note seen throughout Europe, or some US downgraded one? The model number is listed as "GT-N7000", but I'm paranoid... Perhaps it's just a different color batter cover?
Does the Note have 5GHz wifi, or only 2.4GHz? (I've googled for this, but some places claim "802.11 b/g/n" while others claim "802.11 a/b/g/n"
I've seen (and am thankful for) the sticky posted for US users on AT&T. The APN settings pretty much match what I'm using on my GSII (at&t downgraded version.)
Anything else I need to know before I start using this new phone? (I'm coming from a galaxy SII (at&t version.)
Thank you
Gary

The blue colour is the one which is sold everywhere. Its dark blue. I think the note supports 802.11 b/g/n both 5hz and 2.4hz

I would be more suspicious of that "US Warranty." Who's the 3rd party, and what are the terms?

Welcome aboard! I also come from S2 but International Version....I have the Gnote about a month ago... Yes...it's connect to WIFI 5G ( my router Netgear WNDR 3700). I have the ATT go phone plan, and getting average about 1.5 - 2.5 MB/s @ my area with the latest firmware. You have to flash the new firmware for the fast data speed. Very happy with these speed from a go-phone plan.
I also ordered from Amazon fulfilled (Global Mobiles) and got the German Version.

The battery cover is a very dark blue color. It's almost black, but in the light you can see it's dark blue. It's very nice.
What amazon seller did you buy the Note from?

Samsung doesnt make you wait, its the us carriers to blame.

its sold by and fulfilled by Amazon... Not a 3rd party seller. Not sure what company they use for that 90 day thing.

No matter what the product listing says, there is not a US warranty on any International unlocked Galaxy Note. This product was never intended for the US market and Samsung does not cover it in the US, period.

which was why I specified a 3rd party warranty...

I went with expansys us - which is a big reputable cell importer, has a huge supply of the Note ( 31 in stock currently) and many of its accessories, and when I called them explained that they had a real 2 year Samsung European warranty that you have to go back through them to fulfill. 2 yrs though with no cost.
$689.99, free ship. -- to me was the best $/warranty/speed to deliver deal with the reputable dealer.
Got it it delivered quickly and in my hands. They communicated throughout.

Bell Mobility Canada Tab

Repost from the Rogers thread, but the Bell unit deserves its own thread too:
Just got back from my local Bell corporate store, proud new owner of a Bell Galaxy Tab that I can't take home until tomorrow morning (talk about a
sleepless night for a gadget freak).
Device is $649 CAD, as expected, and it's data only, as expected.
There are *no* contract subsidies for this device, retail price is the only price.
They're rolling out a new "Flex Plan" to go with the device, $20/500mb, and if you exceed the 500mb, it goes up to $35 for up to 5Gb. It's a pretty
damned good plan, and especially good considering it's a CANADIAN plan.
If you keep the plan, you get a $50 bill credit after the second month, to further sweeten the pot.
The catch is, you MUST sign up for the no-obligation month-to-month plan to even buy it, and there's the usual (for Canada) $35 "activation fee", same as
any other device sold by a carrier.
The device itself was a pleasant surprise, based on all the literature/leaks, I was expecting the traditional white backed Tab. But this one has the same
textured/patterned (and grippy, btw) black/gray back as found on the AT&T (and Rogers) units, but with absolutely no carrier branding. The sales rep
said they may carry the white-backed model in the future as well, but at least for this first shipment, they're all black.
Model number is GT-PT1000M, so one could expect it to be very similar to International models, sans voice.
Finally, corporate stores have received 2 (count 'em, TWO) units each, and independent dealers may not get any right away, so they will be in short
supply at launch.
im debating wether or not to go into a bell store tomorrow. Im debating between this and a dell streak...not really sure yet. 2 per store sounds like i wont be getting one tomorrow anyways

I'd hold off on the Streak if you really want one, since Dell US will be selling unlocked Streaks with Froyo already installed very shortly, like in time for Black Friday from all reports.
DELL's support sucks ass. Come on, 6 months to get the streak some froyo? We are ad portas of getting gingerbread. I'll keep my tab with all its imperfections.

Just remember that the Galaxy S launched BEFORE the Streak did, and it's just now getting official Froyo in some regions too (none of which are Canada).

:O I am definitely visiting the bell store tomorrow and hope they are in stock.
I should also mention they have a $10 Bell Mobile TV plan that doesn't use your data bucket, and the store I was in actually already had accessories:
Two different Roots sleeves (one a nylon zipper job with external pockets for other crap, one a pleather book cover sleeve that you slid the Tab in from the side and secured with a magnetic flap) and a generic pleather folio that used elastic to hold the Tab in place and a leather slide flap to secure it closed.
Plus Futureshop here already has Zagg full body Invisibleshields for them ($39).
This is totally better than the Galaxy S launch up here, where there wasn't **** for accessories for weeks.
What they did NOT have were extra 30-pin cables or car chargers.
So the bell store at Fairview mall refused to sell me one without signing a plan. Even though I'm an exsisting customer.
Really? I just got mine half an hour ago with no plan and no activation fee. It was funny they had to check the release date then just sold me it and said i was the first to own one bought at that store. I find it strange that the stores only recieved two of them, store thought so too. Im sooo happy its finally mine

UK availability

I see the Atrix is showing as available (3 units) for £549.95 at Simply Electronics:
http://www.simplyelectronics.net/mainproduct.php?pid=13376&sd=specs
and due week beginning 28th March for £499.99 from King of Gadgets:
http://www.kingofgadgets.co.uk/motorola-atrix-sim-free-unlocked-mobile-phone.html
I can't find any other UK sites at the moment with either phones in stock or even an expected date though.
Anyone got the UK version yet?
I'm not the only one looking then lol.
I spoke to king of gadgets yesterday to confirm the due date. They have a high number of pre orders and are unsure of their initial stock allocation but week commencing 28th is still the date they have.
I've also got a notification request in at Play, and am monitoring clove, expansys and others.

It had the AT&T stuff but you can remove it via Manage Applications, also the seller unlocked it before he sold it
The only branding you would have is the AT&T logo on the back which you can wet sand off, other than that all of the bloatware can be removed.
Also it was only £360 imported which is a steal in my opinion, I hate UK prices of phones and gadgets
Mine is for sale if any of you internationalers are interested
I just bought one from eCell on eBay, £499 unlocked. They are adamant it is a totally unbranded device, but still show the at&t logo on the back cover in their photos. They have loads for sale though. I'll report back when I get it through.
Anyone else got this in the UK? Did it get the update through? Anyone got a totally unbranded device and not an unlocked at&t model?
I just requested a MoDaCo page for it as well.

Hi All.
i got mine from ATT in Dallas and it's unlocked to o2 uk. Got the unlock code from cellunlock.
Working fine, got the update last week, no wifi issues, no issues.
i don't believe there are unbranded phones yet, they are either att or bell. if it has att on the battery cover then it's definitely an att phone.
This is just my opinion.
Even though i'm dying to get one , i wont purchase the phone unless it's from a reliable source . Right now i'm checking expansys , handtech and clove almost daily to see if there is any update regarding the device availability but still there is no sign beside the indication that the accessories will be available in the 1st week of April @ clove .. sometimes i feel i lost the sense of the date >_<

What I'd like to know is: do these unlocked phones have AT&T software on them that prevents sideloading and tethering?

*If* you decide to keep it, then it's easy to remove the AT&T logo. I did it (and documented all over the net) by just scratching it off with a coin. Leaves no traces and does not scratch the surface.

Nice, thanks for that. I just sold my Nexus S because the back scratched way too easily, a coin would have killed the finish so it's good to know a coin would do no such damage on this device.
I may start a new thread and document everything about getting the phone into the UK, although it doesn't seem difficult.
eCell seem to be reputable on ebay. They sell a lot of phones and have 600k+ positive feedback so I'm not too worried about getting scammed. They want to wait 5 working days before shipping it to make sure I pay them and the money checks out. They are more worried about getting scammed by me by the looks of things. Still, £499 isn't cheap, but probably cheaper than Clove and Expansys, and definitely cheaper than Play.com will be, as they always seem to be the premium rip-off merchants.
I'll do a comparison between the UK ones and the AT&T ones as well. Curious if they will have sideloading and tethering out of the box so I'll let you know when I find out Moandal.
If not there's gonna be a bit of hacky sacky to do.
I have a contract renewal in May anyway so if this phone turns out to be a pile of AOL Online cds then I can sell it on and upgrade to a Pyramid or something.
Also, UK Accessory list, expected in 5-8 days.

I wish i 'd seen your post before I dived in. I too have bought from ecell. I previously had a at+t phone that was somewhat restricted. I hope this device is direct from Motorola factory. I expect delivery next week. I expect side loading and tethering all to be available without any carrier restrictions. Well this is why I am paying for a second phone... I know moto make great phones.
Btw.... ANYONE READING THIS DO NOT BUY FROM SIMPLY ELECTRONICS. I paid for a phone and then cancelled my order same day. 2.5 weeks, 6 phone calls, 5 emails I still have no refund.

Decision on buying Unlocked or AT&T Brand

If I buy an unlocked version for AT&T where is the best place to buy one? I would want one with a warranty first and foremost. Also, is the home button one that goes out easily? Will the phone run as fast as the one that will come out on AT&T officially? I wouldn't want to spend a ton of money on an unlocked one to find out it's slower than the one that AT&T puts out for hundreds of dollars cheaper.
Next is what about warranty. How safe am I buying unlocked? I have read a lot on this board about yellow stains and stuck pixels. How common are these to get? I don't want to buy a phone that's so much money to be stuck with these problems.
Thanks all

Expansys-USA provides warranty support for phones they sell meaning they'll ship it back to the UK if it needs service. If you buy it from an authorized dealer in the U.K. it's covered by Samsung's two-year global warranty. Regardless, count on being without your phone for a couple of weeks if it needs repair. If you're looking for the safety and security of a direct replacement overnighted from your carrier and loss/theft coverage importing a phone probably isn't for you.

It seems sturdy and I don't think there were problems with the SGS1 which utilized a home button also.

Unless the AT&T version has an upgraded processor then it wouldn't be any faster. T-Mobile is getting a version with the same Qualcomm chip as the Sensation which hasn't benchmarked well. The leaked pics of Sprint's version appears to be a real SGS2. Nothing specific's been posted about AT&T's version so it could be a 4.3" display with an Exynos chip or a 4.5" display with a Qualcomm chip. They just announced there first LTE phone won't be out until the end of the year and code for AT&T's LTE network was found in one of the latest ROMs. This means their SGS2 might not come out for a while or they'll be releasing it sooner as an HSPA+ phone vs. an LTE phone.

There have been some QC issues with the screen and some variances in color temperature from device to device. If you but if from Expansys exchanging it would be fairly simple. If you buy it in the UK it'll cost you shipping. Stay away from Handtec, they were hassling people on display related exchanges.

Also, is HSPA+ phone as fast as the LTE phone? Will I even notice that big of a difference?

LTE only matters if you plan on keeping the phone for a long time. AT&T's only going to have 15 markets up this year. If you get an international phone you can get fake-4G for $10 a month. LTE, while faster, is $30 for 2GB of data and $10 per GB beyond that. And you can't tether at that price. I stream video and tether a tablet and have had no speed issues and I'm in a 3G market.
You sound really paranoid about getting an international phone. You need to think hard about the downside.
- Warranty work will easily take weeks.
- You can buy accident insurance from SquareTrade for $94 for two years but you can't get theft/loss protection.
- If there are QC defects out of the box it'll be a pain to exchange the phone.
The upside is you can get cheap unlimited data (via AT&T), upgrades directly from Samsung, and there's no carrier molestation with crap added or functions stripped out.
Personally, if AT&T gets the same phone T-Mobile is (4.5" display/Qualcomm chip), I'd skip it. Without the Exynos chip the 4.5" phone is an SGS2 for marketing purposes only.
Not paranoid just getting all of the facts. Is the att version going to be 4.5?

So do any models actually have a real US warranty? (I.e. Not the Expansys deal).
I didn't think Samsung offers any US warranty coverage since the GSII hasn't been produced for the US.
I saw the "International Warranty" model on Amazon but no one can prove it's actually warranted...they just assume it's covered in the US.

If you send a phone to Samsung for repair they'll ask for a copy of the invoice and possibly a credit card statement if they're suspicious about the authenticity of the invoice. Any phone purchased outside it's intended market of sale is considered grey market and therefore has no warranty. Same thing for purchasing it from a retailer not authorized by Samsung. Since no model of the SGS2 is intended for sale in the U.S. buying it from anyone in the U.S. means it has no warranty - no matter what the seller might tell you. Supposedly, because the warranty is considered global, a properly purchased UK phone should be repaired by Samsung in the U.S. No one's tested that though. Expansys, because they have offices in the UK, ships the phone back through their UK office for warranty repairs.
If I were to buy Expansys-US would be the place because they do cover it. Now only problem is what if I buy it and AT&T come out with theirs in two weeks LOL! Also, what's the fail rate on the screens, etc?

AT&T WILL probably have the Galaxy S II in a few weeks... if you can you are probably better off waiting to see which model you prefer. I heard US varients of the GS II were getting Tegra processors and of course AT&T will cripple the phone with bloatware and slow updates.. so I went ahead and got an unlocked one from Amazon that DOES have a warrenty. Who knows, maybe AT&T will surprise everyone and keep the Galaxy S II the way it should be.

Bought mine this morning. Selling the wife's G2x. We'll have the GSII and the Galaxy Nexus. I bought it for her, but hopefully she'll share!

Do I have warranty in other countries like Germany, if I buy the Nexus in the US?
Any one know if I use this on AT&T and will be forced into their data plan?

That sounds like a 2-year contract price.

I'm not quite sure of this, but if you have a local Best Buy they might cover it under the GeekSquad Black Tie plan. I've never asked GS if they cover devices you bought from somewhere other than Best Buy, but it's definitely worth a shot. If anyone knows whether or not they do feel free to reply to my post.
Is there more than one model of GSM Galaxy Nexus?
I imagine that the $399 offer will drive down the price on the used market on EBAY, and I'm wondering if all the GSM Galaxy Nexus are identical. I know there are differences between other Samsung manufactured units meant for the European market when compared with the US carrier versions. For example some European models have FM radios and US versions don't.
Does this work with other European, Croatia to be specific, carriers without problems? I have some friends in the US which can buy it for me.
It is supposedly locked to US carriers only (but unlocked to any US carrier)
You would probably have to unlock it further, unless Samsung locked it down like the Motorola Photon
It says: With devices on Google Play, you can buy an unlocked Galaxy Nexus phone that will operate on more than 200 GSM providers worldwide, including AT&T and T-Mobile in the US.
So I guess it works with my operator(Tele2). It only states in US it will not work on Verizon and Srint.
I was asking more if US phones have different hardware parts or whatever, as compared to European models. But if iPhone works here, I guess this phone does as well. Just wanted to make sure.

I have the original Nexus One. I used mediaNet for about four months before AT$T forced me to switch. I argued for another 6 weeks or so, kept giving them the imei of my HTC startek but in the end, I caved.
I am very tempted with this, although in some ways it seems like a side step and not a leap forward. I have been very happy with the N1.
Ironically, I am still with AT$T, still unhappy there, but not much for choices because of coverage and my kids keep eating up my upgrades. So I pay full price for my phone and full price at AT$T.
But I can say I'm not locked into a carrier???

They all have the same hardware, even the Verizon one, except Verizon has 32gb storage.

I wouldn't exactly call the VZW version the same as the GSM version.
Aside from the obvious CDMA vs. GSM difference, the CDMA version is heavier and thicker. Heck, you can't even swap batteries between the two so there are differences in the actual hardware.
Just placed an order. Hope it works with AT&T's medianet.

A Farewell to my Beloved Note

I was one of the many unlucky people to brick their Note in the whole ics kernel fiasco. I tried to send my phone to Samsung Germany for repair but it would have cost $112 to ship it there . However Amazon said they would give me a full refund despite it being out of the 30 day period. I'm too afraid to invest in another international Note though. So now I need to decide which AT&T phone I should get. Any ideas? I don't want to wait much later than June to get a new phone by the way.
HTC one x, or the note.

I know you're afraid to go with the international Note again, but as long as you stay away from ICS for now, you should be fine, right? Unless you're totally unable to go back to GB, which I can totally understand.

Even if I stay away from ics I'm afraid something else might happen and that I won't get as lucky. I really like the one x but the lack of an sd card slot is kinda a deal breaker. The Galaxy S3 looks somewhat promising though and is pretty big.
Wow amazon giving you full refund.. ? How long did you have it for?

That is very awesome for Amazon to take it back well after 30 days.
I wish I contacted Amazon before ordering the replacement Note (yeah, my first Note was bricked by the LP6 kernel ).
If you are really sticking with AT&T only devices, I think the I717 would fit you best. It's a direct replacement of what you had (minus the home-button). I had the I717 for two hours, then I decided to sell it for the N7000 instead because of the developments available. The One X is also a good choice, but the AT&T version lost its "quad-core edge" compared to the international version.

The AT&T version's S4 isn't that bad but only 16G rom with no micro-sd slot is a deal breaker for me. I dislike the AT&T's Note as well because of the slow qualcomm CPU. I would rather get another N7000 or wait for GSIII for the moment.

I would wait for the S3 or buy a used Note. That last "new" phones were bought were Captivates. After that 2 SGS IIs and my Note Used. Saving our upgrades for iPhone 5s to sell unless ATT decided to dump our UL MediaNet plans to upgrade. Then we won't upgrade at all. Don't need LTE. WiFi is everywhere.
I'm confused why blame the note for upgrading unoffically to the wrong firmware version for you phone? It's country specific? So at the end of the day you don't like the Note?
I personally can't see a replacement for the note till the next version comes out.
Get another Note is my choice.
Awesome you got a refund!

Right, but the OP explicitly stated that he/she wants to stick with AT&T's devices. The N7000's super-brick wave is strong as of late, and there is no way to get it warrantied through Samsung in the US (I'm in the US, too, and my first Note was bricked by LP6) besides sending it back to where it was originally sold for service.
The advantage to having an AT&T device is that should it be super-ultra-hard-bricked or any other faults, it can be brought back to the DSC (Device Support Center) for an exchange within the 1-year warranty period.
International Note + CM9. Better than anything out there.

Sorry to post my question into your thread but I could not ignore your experience with the GN International bought from Amazon.de
I am just about to go the same route as you did, and because I also had one problem with a product bought from Amazon and the way they've handled it so brilliantly that I was thrilled with their after sale service.
I was asked to send it back and because I was given a bar code which I glued on the box I didn't have to pay the shipping cost (just needed a printer and some glue). And because I've asked for the money back instead of Amazon credit I had the money in 4 days maximum instead of instantly, which in my book is amazing.
Now I am considering of buying a G.NOTE from German Amazon or Spanish Amazon. The price difference is 2 Euros so it's not a deal breaker so my question is:
Do German G. NOTEs have a problem and would it be preferable for me to get one from Spain or is it all the same thing and I should not worry much about it?
Thank you all for your answeres.
Don't you worry about German or Spanish versions. They are the same as long as you buy unbranded exemplars. The sole difference is the rom version. Just make sure you buy a N7000.

Wait ....I thought the N7000 was the AT&T US version??? I had understood that the major difference between the US and Intl versions was the physical button.
I just ordered the AT&T version. I also cannot consider a "Flagship" device one without SDCard capability.....might as well get an iPhone. I don't get why the decision with that, being that the EVO 4G LTE has the SDCard ...it's the same phone rebranded....That just ticks me off. Same reason I could not buy the GNex.
I'm just hoping that the SGIII comes out with in my 30 day return period in case I don't like the Gnote.

SGH-I777 or get an unlocked HSPA+ Gnex off of the Play Store.
The AT&T Note is a crippled derpbeast. The AT&T One X is even more heavily locked than other HOX units.

No.
The SGH-I777 was the last Samsung device on AT&T to only have minor differences from the international version. (touchkeys, NFC, slight audio differences for calls)
The AT&T Note has the following in common with the international version:
Physical dimensions, Wacom digitizer, screen type, name - that's it. EVERYTHING else about the device is completely different.
