Hello everyone. My trial of OfficeSuite5 has ended. Too bad I never actually used it during the trial period LOL
Well now its time to either pay up or use something else. I've looked at a couple of reviews and they suggest QuickOffice HD Pro as the best app for tablets as its the only one which is designed for tablets.
Well the Note though capable isn't much of a tablet. So perhaps an elephantised phone app is still best for us?
I have no objections paying $15 for an Office App. What are your thoughts on which is best on the Note?
Best Office Suite
Quick Office Pro 5 is the best. That plus EZPDF Reader will allow you to deal with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF files. EZPDF program is excellent and allows you to edit pdf files.
It really depends what you expect from your Office application. If you need to share documents and edit complex ones, I wouldn't call any Android Office suite a mature one. If you only need to edit relatively simple documents, both options you mention might be OK. If I were you, I wouldn't buy either without a good test drive, though.
The biggest problem is compatibility with more complex formatting (and formulas). Quite often opening a document in a mobile office suite and saving it back means changed or lost formatting. So when you open the document on your PC you may be in for a surprise. So far Dataviz's DocsToGo have been best in this respect - their technology (aptly called "Intact") leaves all formating intact - so even if the mobile app doesn't understand more complex formatting (footnotes, tables, anchored text etc.), it doesn't destroy it.
Alternatively, there is a German company, having a very good Windows Mobile Office suite: Softmaker Office (they have a website both in English and German). This suite has always been much more powerful than other mobile solutions. On their website it is mentioned that they are preparing a version for Android, but it is not ready yet (not even a public beta!). So you may keep this suite in mind for future consideration and meanwhile buy just the software that is good enough for basic purposes.

It surely depends on what you expect from your office application. Thus recommendations would vary based on preferences.
Of all the available office apps I found Documents to Go as the best one. It keeps the format INTACT and I found that it's the only app that can open PASSWORD PROTECTED files which was important for me.

Ultimately some kind of virtualisation or hosted solution would do the trick, if you are on an unlimited fast dataplan. Or you could just run the fullfletched suite from your own computer. Logmein is good, but requires your PC turned on to function as a server. Used to do that back in 2006 and acces it throught Wifi in college on my htc lmao.
If your company has cytrix I think it should also be easy. They must have an Android client to connect.
There is also splashtop, free on getjar. However I dont think it has an office suit build in. It is the only virtualisation client I do know of targetted at consumers.
Did you try Microsoft office 360 or just plain google docs? Maybe they can cater your office needs through a browser

I use PowerOffice. Its free on the Samsung market. You just have to have a fast data plan, as its a virtualization solution. You can access your files via Email or Dropbox. Please go to the Samsung market for further information, I'm writing this from my Note and am kinda lazy atm

I do a bit of work for one company that sends all their work in RTF files.

Polaris office does not handle formulas with the IF function in Excel correctly. Documents To Go is my recommendation.
I really need am office app that will let you annotate...
Ezpdf works quite well for annotating pdfs, but I want to do that to powerpoint and word documents...

I don't get it. Polaris Office comes with nearly all Galaxy phones. Why do we need another paid office?
Porlaris Excel has a big problem. It can't read most formulae. It turn them into literal values. However, it seems it only fails when handling XLSX (Office 2007) documents. If I save to XLS (Office 2003) format, then it does everything fine.
I believe I've tried Kingsoft, but it has exactly the same problem as Polaris.
One app to avoid is Smart Office+, at least not the current version. It thinks that Note is a tablet and displays an HD UI. You won't be able to do anything with the tiny toolbar. There is not yet any method to manually choose among the two UI in the suite.

I bought adobe convert to pdf app from the market for the same problem.
This app allowed me to upload for conversion to pdf the rtf file and within seconds I got back the pdf version and formatting looked like the original.the website does not save the original by the looks of it. The app worked fine for me on this instance but some of the reviews are not good but most of those reviews seem to be for converting website links.

Ever since I recieved the MDA I've been very eager to use it to read ebooks. I've never had a machine capable of doing so, so I am very uneducated about the entire field.
I have acquired several .lit and .pdf ebooks. I know there is a program instantly installed on the MDA to read pdfs, and it is my understanding that I am supposed to use Microsoft Reader for .lit files.
However . . . neither of these programs seem fit to read anything on this phone. The pdf reader makes me scroll left and right, and fitting anything to the page makes the entire thing unreadable. And Microsoft Reader seems very poorly made, suffering the same problems and unchangably large text.
Does anyone know a solution to my problem? Another program to read the files, or settings I am simply missing?

Before I was using Microsoft reader, but Mobipocket comes with a desktop and PDA software and the desktop software can convert very good a lot of files, which you can read easilly on the PDA

I've never used those format's, but I've been using uBook from Gowerpoint and I love it. I use it in conjunction with all the stuff I get from Gutenberg (the BEST place to get free ebooks) and haven't had a problem since. You can use it free if you don't mind a minor annoyance every three pages of the reminder or you can pay a little bit to register.
Mack, I have used Microsoft Reader, and it just seems far too weak. I didn't like it. No margin control, font size, etc. . . . unless I'm wrong. Feel free to correct me, itd make this a lot easier!
I tried MobiPocket and so far it seems like the best. I can control those functions I just mentioned, and seems to convert pdfs well. However, it stills seems to have few problems (It seems to kill itself randomly and - as far as I can tell - doesn't save my font settings.
I found a program called Convert Lit to, well, convert .lit files. I haven't tried it yet but I've heard good things.
I haven't tried the other suggested readers, but, judging from their websites they don't seem as good as MobiPocket. Ill eventually get to them.

However, I'm improving that with many (illegal) news scrapers, grabbing full articles from many different sites (eg Wired). Their normal RSS feed just gives headlines.
That's a good option if you can host php - write your own scraper and grab ANY webpage as RSS

Have to agree with Jose_v, ubook is the best all round reader. It doesn't read pdf files, which for me is fine but can read ebooks in text, htm or html and rtf formats, all of which can be zipped to save space. It will also read palm and mobipocet format files that are not drm'd. Zip compression is better than mobipocket's, so you save that little bit extra space on your precious mini-sd.
It has recently become shareware and comes up with its logo every few pages, which is easy to get rid of as you just press down. Seeing as I have been using it for about 3 or 4 years now, I purchased it without hesitation when it became shareware.
Use it, you will learn to appreciate it.
To change the font on MS Reader, go to the Library page, click Settings, and change your font size. You can't do anything about the margins, though someone told me you could change them by opening a document in MS Word, expanding the margins, then converting to Reader. Haven't tried it yet.
Speaking of Word, download the free Word-to-Reader converter. Anything you can read in Word, including TXT and HTML files, can be converted to yo9ur own LIT files. You can even customize the cover picture. http://www.microsoft.com/reader/developers/downloads/rmr.asp
uBook is great, and I use it for all my old Palm ebooks, but I have so many LIT files, it's just easier to read them in Reader. Besides, none of the other programs have a PC version. I can read the same file on my desktop or laptop if I want, and if I sync the files, my PPC remembers where I was when I was reading it on the other device.

I'm going to third uBook, I used it on my old HPC and through a number of Pocket PCs and it is a wonderful app. Why I haven't actually registered it yet is beyond me, I can't imagine a better reader.

I just got an HTC Touch and I would love to be able to get a modern English translation of Bible on it. Specifically I am thinking of the NIV or possibly the NKJV.
Top features I am looking for are:
1) Easy to read on screen. Should be readable for practical use including reading out load in groups. Perhaps something out there has configurable font sizes?
2) Easy to navigate to desired passage (book, chapter, verse)
3) Basic search functionality so I can enter words like “apart law testify” and get passages such as Romans 3:21. The search functionality should be comparable to that of www.biblegateway.com - currently one of my most used resources.
Optional features that might be nice but not critical might be:
1) Bookmarks: So I can prepare a lesson and have bookmarks for relevant passages. If the bookmarks could be color-coded, numbered of have labels attached this might make it easier for me to know which bookmark to use at which point during the lesson.
2) Translation independence. Perhaps the software could be independent of the translation used and additional translations (RSV, NIV, ASV, etc...) could be purchased and loaded into the same software.
3) Personal notes: If I could enter my own personal notes and have them automatically date/time stamped and stay with a passage that might be nice.
4) A Windows XP/Vista version: if the software had a desktop version that might be nice but not at all necessary.
I realize such software is most likely to be commercial (particularly because the NIV is copyrighted to Zondervan) but if I could get something with the top 3 features I would happily pay for it.

That's the best I've ever used and I've been using them for over 6 years since way back when I only had a palm. Their Reader is independent from the bibles so you can have multiple bibles. You can also install the reader to main memory and install bibles onto storage card (in my case I have some in storage and some in main memory since I'm still having the random data loss issue on my Touch.) They have a number of free translations and then you can also purchase other translations for a reasonable price. And the reader itself is free so you can pick it up along with some free bibles to try out for a while. I'm sure you'll like it

Are these the only real players with this kind of a product? If so it should be pretty easy for me to try all three I appreciate your help in this. So far I think I am tilting in the direction of Olive Tree.
I actually use Mobipocket and love it. Have used it since my PDA days and have the KJV for it.

I have used this product for over 5 years on a Palm and just recently switched to a Touch. It has everything I could think of and has all the major versions including the original languages. There are vast selection of resources available and base package is free. You pay only for copytrighted material.

I recommend OliveTree. I've been using it since I owned a Palm Tungsten E. When I switched to a Windows Mobile device, I discovered that the Bibles I purchased for the Palm also had the Bibles in the Windows format!!

I got a vogue in December, and I had installed and was using e-sword (which I have been using on my pc and several pda's for years) until I went from WM6 to WM6.1. I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times, and it won't load when I try to open it. I have also installed Olive Tree and Laridian and I'm evaluating them. So, so far I can't tell you how to get it working properly, but depending on the version of WM you are running, it seems e-sword might have a conflict with 6.1

Running fine for me with wm6.1, program installed in memory, Bibles and commentaries on storage card.
Yes, I can confirm VZYGuy's experience. I installed e-Sword on a Sprint Vogue and it works flawlessly. I installed everything to the storage card. And Incidentally, I had already purchased a number of premium modules for my desktop PC version of e-sword and managed to convert those to a pocket version. Works great. The sad thing is, I recently purchase Laridian for the Pocket PC because a number of people had said that e-Sword was not so good on the Pocket version. After using Laridian for a few weeks, I decided to go ahead and load Pocket e-Sword. Honestly and IMHO, e-Sword is far more functional, feature rich, intuitive, and pleasing for what I would like out of a Bible program. Wish that I would have tried e-Sword first (thought I was going to have to re-purchase all the premium modules I had and that discouraged me as well).
Here are my phone parameters:
OS: WM 6.1a
Base ROM Ver: 3.02 with DHarvey's Vista Black (awesome)

I'm happy for those of you who who are still able to use E-Sword, however it still isn't working for me. I reinstalled E-Sword and one Bible module. No go. I have a US Cellular Vogue with WM 6.1, Rom 3.01.573.4, Radio 3.43.30, and an 8 gig Kingston card. I'm currently running M2D, which I had not installed when E-Sword stopped working. It worked until I installed WM 6.1 Just like activesync. At least being able to access GPS makes up for the loss of E-Sword and the hassle with activesync.
I found the answer in another thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1772770&postcount=103 The problem Pocket E-Sword has is with .Net CF 3.5 which I have on my Vogue. Since I can't remember which program I installed which needed this, I will get by with PocketBible and BibleReader until Rick gets the problem sorted out. Since 3.5 is going to be required by more programs, this incompatibility will hopefully be reconciled at some point.

If you are talking of the Access Database, then I am afraid you are out of luck, as MS stopped support for Access on the PDA in WM5 (if memory serves me correctly, may have been earlier).
What you will need to do is to go to a 3rd party database that will translate and synch with your existing MS Access databases. Personally I use SprintProDB, but there are many others.
Again, you need to be aware of the synch issues as well as usability, so I would strongly recommend going for the trial and field testing the voracity of each developers claims to functionality and synchronisation. FYI, Sprint Pro is at: http://www.kaione.com/

Truly, nobody says dang unless they are on US TV! As to the expense, I am pretty sure you will find SprintPro is not that expensive, its only around 30-40 not 400, so suck it up, pay the man for the work done and see if you can set this as a task for your students to complete as a project.

SQL Server CE 3.5 Works well on WM 6 by the way. Its great as a database and also comes with the Desktop like Query Analyzer.

Having used the mobile excel on the hd2 successfully I am having difficulties locating one on android. I have searched the marketplace but havent found one that is like excel mobile. I am looking to view and edit documents. I have tried quickoffice but it wont allow me to open excel documents stored on my sd card.

On desire HD you have quickoffice full, but they don't wont open big files, or do not open exacly as on desktop PC.

Documents To Go (paid) has a severe problem. If any cell in your entire workbook has "unsupported content", it won't let you edit ANY cells in ANY of the spreadsheets.
It is very unclear what is supported. Their forums give a list of supported functions for the Blackberry version only. OFFSET function missing is a deal-killer for me.
I suspect it also cannot handle named ranges nor the SUMIF function.
I have been searching mightily for something to replace PlanMaker (see http://softmaker.de), which is amazing and well worth the money. It is not available for Android.
I have found nothing for Android that is even in the same league as Office Mobile, which I consider damned wimpy.
The closest I have found is ThinkFree Office, which has bugs handling named ranges.
Other failures: OfficeSuite Pro, QuickOffice.
I suggest that the fingerprint UI is inadequate for fine work. Bring back the stylus!

Firstly, I have used Windows Mobile 6 Professional since it came out, and before that, 5, and before that, i was on mobile 2003..
I stopped being interested in Windows Phones when HTC abandoned their loyal customers to try and create that little iPhone experience, which for some reason doesnt seem to get old for some people.. ever..
the last phone i bought was a Jasjam, and its what i still use, after giving up on the phenomenon completely, and only use my phone for calling & sms anymore..
I still wouldnt buy a phone today, as there is no phone on the market i like.. and i dont care for Android... I'd like to wait for the Firefox OS.. but business duties call.. and I need to get a new phone..
I walked into a Nokia shop today, and looked at the 920, opened it up, i totally hate the Windows 8 experience.. HATE... but I tried to look past that crap and go right to the Office Programs.. office 2013... wow.. u'd think that was pretty advanced by now... i mean.. u would, right?
I opened it up and to my dismay, found an Office that was intentionally missing most all basic office functionality..
Word functions like a freebie text editor..
there is no way to add even so much as a single bullet point to your word document without opening a specific "outline" template" which is populated with 50 random useless bullets..

Office mobile 8 is intentionally designed without 1/10 of the functionally office mobile users had in windows mobile 2003, for the sole purpose of forcing people to upload all of their documents to Microsoft cloud drive, so they can look over the world's documents, and take from it a profitable future business plan for themselves.. stealing users information & privacy, & Plans which influence the world, from the world's thinkers.. as they obviously cant think for themselves
It doesn't have Bullet Points OR Numbered Points? really? things found in 2003? no tab, no outline format detection, no toolbar, literally NOTHING any business user or thinker would need..
its more useless than your average plain text editor
obviously, taking away such very basic tools forces them to use cloud services.. giving you access to what marketing, development, and R&D teams would die for.. an endless stream of private personal & corporate information
they thereby create an experience the end user hates so much, he/she resorts to things like Microsoft cloud services.. their office 365, and their own windows 8 tablet
trying to increase sales of their office 365 cloud products, giving everyone access to their documents ONLY if our personal data is first transferred through their own online servers for review, inspection, idea fraud, & theft
and if the customer doesn't like that options, he is then forced into option 2, spend money on a Windows 8 tablet device, and learn to carry it around along with their Windows 8 phone, again, just to be able to do the very most basic of office-related things
Office mobile has taken 20 steps backwards, and does not do ANYTHING that at least 10 other office Substitutes can do way better on Android or iPhone
Powerpoint cant even create a simple slide, a function at least 10 other office alternatives can do on Android & iPhone..
these are the cheapest, dirtiest tactics available to a CEO.. Steve Ballmer should be fired
why dont they give us all a Windows7-like experience on the Mobile phone, and re-take the Lion's share of the market... rather than letting Stevie Ballmer tank the entire company with his little hair-salon tactics
They need to stop trying to force their Windows8 agenda down everyone's throats, and try giving users an experience just for the sake of a good experience.. or does that not compute with their 1950's-style corporate planning?
Why dont they try creating a Windows phone that is as useful and functional and welcoming as the Windows 7 platform itself.. that's what we want
an OFFICE which functions at least similarly to the Competitions handling of MS's own Office files & formats..
and something which says "2013", not "1913"
honestly, their office 13 for windows 8 phones belongs more in a horse & buggy setting, than in direct competition with companies like HTC, Android, Samsung & iPhone
I went into a phone shop ready to buy a Windows8 phone today, opened office.. and walked out contemplating switching to Apple OS for my Desktop computing

I would like to get rid of that crappy office thing on the 920 and replace it with something useful
or does anyone know of a full-functioning, feature-rich Office Substitute?
I would like it to:
- Be able to Create PPT Slide shows, Edit them, Re-order them, Play & Control them, etc..
- Have complex Word Docx & Excel XLSX Creation & Editing functions, with lots of options & toolbars, etc
- Be Intuitive and make good use of space & movements etc
- Function similarly to Windows Office 2003, AT LEAST

not entirely true..
I found software called "Pix2PPT" to Create PPT Slideshows on your Windows Phone 8 from photos, images, or graphics you have on your phone...
You can Add Text Titles & Subtitles, Change Orientation, & Edit Transition Timing
You can save or Upload the Slideshow..
I dont know how customizable the text is, but at least its something worth looking into..
You may be able to find something to save a text file as an Image, and then import it as a pic... maybe.. i dunno
The free version is fully functional but limited to 5 slides..
but it only costs 1.99
anyway.. we'll see of the software community bothers making anything for winP8 or not..

another note about Google.. I have over 8,000 unread messages in my Gmail inbox, with no way of marking them all as read or deleting them all without going through over 80 pages one by one..
they've been there for years... i dont care what they say.. I want them gone..
i mean.. what kind of company does that to people?
I've complained about that to google about 20 times SINCE Gmail was in its early beta testing stage..
ridiculous..
so.. i'm thinking Googles just another Microsoft.. too big and self-inflated to care about making things useful or enjoyable for people.. and just hell bent on doing things their own way

You can fix this pretty quick:
1. login to gmail
2. go to settings >filters > Create new
3. in the to field, put your email address
4. Click create filter with this search
5. Check the box for mark as read - along with any other bulk action you'd like (skip inbox, etc)
6. Check the box for "also apply this filter to X matching conversations
7. Click create filter
8. It will take a little time to process
9. Go back to settings > filters and delete the filter
10. Fresh start!
It's a bit of a process and any incoming messages while you have the filter active may also fall victim to the same process, so be sure to check your "All Mail" view after you delete the filter to make sure you don't miss anything.
After this, you can create filters for junk email that you dont need to actually read as they come - I have all those online shopping emails going into a label, banking into another, family, etc. I rarely get an email in my inbox that doesn't require my attention and response.
And yes, setting up filters and labels is a lot of work, but I think the idea behind this is that it's customizable for any user's needs - the user just has to take the initiative.

I'm glad you <3 gmail again - it's a pretty neat tool
I do work for Google on the Quickoffice team (I'm the support manager ). We don't have any specific plans that we can share at this time - we're not able to comment on product plans until the information is officially made public. If we do announce plans one way or the other, we'll definitely post updates on our social pages (Google +, Facebook, & Twitter).
Wow this thread got a lot shorter when all the rambling/ranting and uselessness was weeded out. I left the one bit of information that might be useful to someone someday. Closing this now. Everyone behave in the future.
