Free Google Voice VoIP calls using Gingerbread's integrated SIP functionality - EVO Shift 4G General

I've been experimenting with the built-in SIP functionality in Gingerbread. Here's what I have so far:
I have three different Google Voice numbers. My main GV number is linked to the official GV app on my phone, and I use it for most calls.
My other two numbers forward to SipGate accounts. I configured the Gingerbread internet call menu with my SipGate accounts. My use of those lines is specific and limited enough that I enable SIP calling only when I need it.
I use the Google Voice mobile site when I need to originate calls for my secondary numbers. I know some people prefer third-party callback apps, but sometimes those stop working when Google changes their API. Those numbers are mostly incoming anyway, so that's a minor issue.
Because my phone is rooted, I can make VoIP calls on both wifi and cellular data, although quality suffers on 3G.
If anyone is interested in how to set this up, I posted complete configuration instructions on my blog.
Also, if anyone has ideas for a better setup, I'd love to hear them.

I am just now starting voip class at my college and this seems like a fun little experiment to help me learn a bit and see what it can do. Thanks.

Good guide. I could have used this a few months ago. I've tried exactly the same steps on my Shift, even to the point of installing iDialer and Fring on my HTC Touch Pro 2 (same as the Tilt 2). In both cases I was never happy with the performance though (and I couldn't get iDialer to integrate with GV to make it work as a VOIP only WiFi phone). There's always a lag, which throws off my wife whenever we try to use it.
I just tried Talkatone Preview for Android as well, and it's slightly better, but there's still a lag.

Have you looked at grooveip? the app and a voice number is all you need. Roommates cells got turned off so I went with groove and it seems to work great.

Keep up the great work.
I would probably use this if I needed to make international calls.
I get good enough Sprint service here that I'm never out of coverage, but international calls can run that bill up.

This is the major pitfall of VOIP in general, but I did find a really cool app that made calls after you listened to an ad. I'll try and locate it. You need a computer and mic for it. It's like Skype, but free.

Grooveip is really nice. I was using that to make free calls back to the states while in sout east asia. Easy to get free wireless hotspots over there.

I use Linphone but it's configured to my home voip provider (Callcentric). It should work also to make free calls though.

SRDO - Sprint Relay Data Only plans...

So I've been researching how deaf and hearing impaired people use Android phones to make communication easier and, in this process, I've been checking on which carriers offer special plans for such users.
Apparently Sprint has a $29.99 a month plan that is data only, and unlimited data at that.
http://www.sprintrelaystore.com/data_only_plan.htm
Yes, it's intended for users who will be using their Relay service (to make voice calls by typing text etc.) But they don't restrict it to such purposes.
Interesting.
You can get a Moment or Hero on such a plan if you open a new line. Just thought I'd throw this out there and see what everyone thinks of it. Maybe some of our Sprint employees can explain more of how this plan works to us?
What would you do to make voice calls...exactly?

In theory, this might be refuted, you could use Google Voice.
It's funny I was chatting with sprint about this exact same. thing last night. If I could just figure out how to receive calls I will switch to this in a heartbeat. We only use about 400 of the 1500 minutes. And still pay for all of them it seems wasteful.
You could go to voicestick.com and buy their $2.99/month pay-as-you-go minutes plan and set that account up with SIPDroid (or any SIP client really). I have the normal Everything data plan, but I also use that plan because I have that for my home phone.
If you use pbxes.org you can get a nice setup with a ring group, and the same number can ring your home phone, your cell phone (via the SIP client), and any number of things.
If anyone's interested, let me know once you have the right accounts and I'll help you with the setup.
would skype work over the data connection?
Or is it the same as google voice where a voice call is still required?
Last i tried skype it was beta for android and it worked loke gvoice, not voip for us yet.
I'm pretty tied to GV and it requires a voice line. Would me nice to use SIP/VOIP if possible though.
skype-to-skype calling works with Fring, and it also has a SIP plugin, although I haven't tried it.
I read on another forum that some people get cheaper featurephones with cheap voice only plans and then get something like an SRDO plan with an Android handset.
Apparently they like separating out the functions... weird to me.
[Accidental double post. Sorry.]
GVoice forwards to Gizmo which can be setup as a the SIP provider in SIPDroid. The Guava project has something like this setup, I don't know much about it beyond its intent. I use SIP/Gizmo as a landline replacement at home via a GVoice number and it works beautifully. My tests with SIP on 3G/2G were less impressive, I don't think it's a "prime time" solution just yet.
In theory this is where cells will go eventually, a data connection and nothing more, no per-minute or per-transaction services, it will be more like an ISP. Data, text, chat, voice, apps, etc, will be delivered on the same pipe. We're practically there now. Add tethering to the mix and this could be the ONLY data pipe you need.
I have use the whole GV + Sipsorcery + sipdroid setup because I don't get reception at my house, so my I use my hero for wifi calls while at home. Most of the time, no one notices the difference. But I think it depends on how many people are using the internet in my area because sometimes there is a delay on the line, but a lot of other times there isn't. For some reason, it actually works better for me when I am using evdo instead of wifi. All of my friends have told me that I sound better while using sipdroid vs the sprint network. Kind of weird.
To that end, my friend brought his t-mobile android over. He is on their data only plan and since he lives in downtown St. Louis the he always has a data connection. So his bill is SUPER cheap by doing all of this and he is raving about it. He never turns his wifi on and uses the same setup as me. He claims he never has any problems, the only drawback being his battery drains faster now.
I wouldn't tell people to just start doing this though because I still encounter problems. Such as I my phone will only ring once and sometimes not at all. It is being routed through three services and like I said, there is a delay sometimes. But then again, sometimes I will go a whole week with it working PERFECTLY.
Maybe someone here might have some advice the proper setup to make this more stable for me. Otherwise I am going to pursue that airave device.
I'll point out again that Sprint's primary purpose in having the SRDO plans is for deaf or hearing impaired users who don't need voice service.
However, it is an interesting idea for those of us who like to tinker, too (=

False. Google Voice does not include the capability--technologically or otherwise--to carry voice calls over either data or voice bands (...yet; i say "yet" because it seems only natural that a tech-conglomerate like Google might go this route in the future. They've annouced no such plans)
You could use Skype/Fring.
So, in theory:
I could open a new line with this on my old Diamond for ICS only?
I'm reviving an ancient thread here, but, as @flexgrip alluded to above, if you can get a gizmo5 account and a sipsorcery account, someone on a data-only plan can have 100% free voip using your Google Voice number.
You just need to forward your GV calls to gizmo5. Gizmo charges for outgoing calls, but what you can do is setup a sipsorcery account, and route your incoming calls from gizmo (free), but use google voice for your outgoing calls (also free). Now you just use your sipsorcery account as the sip provider in sipdroid. People you call will see your GV # as caller ID, and, of course, calls people place to your Google Voice number will be routed to you.
Gizmo5 accounts (no longer accepting new registrations) can be bought for less than $10 on ebay. Sipsorcery wasn't (temporarily) taking new registrations either the last I checked, but I'm guessing these can be had if you look in the right place as well.
Sipsorcery can have a bit of a learning curve, but there are ready-made tutorials on setting up gizmo5 + GV in sipsorcery online. It's a one-time setup.
Why do you need sipsorcery? It worked with just gv and gizmo5 last time I used it, right before google bought it. Did the change something up?

Gizmo charges for outgoing calls, and plus they've disabled the service they used to have that lets you show a custom number (like your GV #) as your outgoing caller ID.
So unless you want to use voice minutes or go on the web for outgoing calls . . .
Sipsorcery allows you to create a singular sip account that receives the incoming GV>gizmo forward, while making outgoing calls directly from Google Voice (which, of course, is free and posts the same number for caller ID).
Unless there's a new way I'm not aware of, this was what I learned when I was obsessed with finding the cheapest way to make data calls a while back.

[Q] Wifi Voip with Droid?

First of all, I'm looking for a way to make and receive calls over wifi. The reason is that I need to save on minutes, and also that I will be out of the country for a couple of weeks very soon.
I am trying to make sure I have a wifi connection so that I can receive calls from the US with VOIP and wifi.
Secondarily, I'm looking for a service that will provide me cheap calls and texting from my Droid X to the Philippines while I am in the states.
I've been trying to find information on this, but it's very confusing. No I don't have Gizmo5, so that's no help.

I have been tinkering with SipDroid and it appears to work pretty well. You will need some type of SIP termination to make calls.
There are a handleful of SIP clients in the marketplace, but you are going to have to get your hands dirty and learn about SIP to make this work.
Or just get a Skype account? Or Use Gizmo5 with a Sip client?

Ahh. Sorry. I have my own asterisk (SIP) server. When I want to play with VoIP, I just create a new extension on that.
SipDroid evidently has some connection to pbxes.org and connects to that service pretty easily it looks like.
PBXes.orrg also has a basic free account to get you started. Looks like it allos 2000 minutes per month with a maximum call time of 60 minutes per call for free.
Might be worth giving it a shot.
You can also get service from a provider like vitelity or teliax pretty cheaply.
You can make calls through gmail now. Not tried it but might be an option for you.

i'm in the same boat. about to travel to india and would love to ditch the calling card. i've been using gmail voip since wed. and have been pretty impressed as far as internet calling goes. my plan is use that when i'm out of the country.
anyone know if having an ip address in india will wig it out? i know the gmail call option is only for us customers right now.
I still only vaguely understand what PBXes.org does. None of this stuff is accessible.
Is there anyone who has a system that works, outside of the US, that allows you to receive wifi calls and does not involve gizmo5?
I don't mind learning something new here, but I don't have too much time, and I need it to be the right something.
I've played around with a lot of free Android SIP clients, and SIPDroid is definitely what you want. But in order to make calls to landlines in the US, you will need a SIP account that allows BYOD (Bring Your Own Device). That means you'll need to pay. Nobody will bridge SIP calls to real phones for free any more. BroadVoice is one choice.
As you see, none of this stuff is plug and play yet. You'll simply need to learn it. I recommend starting by getting a free SIP account at iptel.org, and set things up in SIPDroid to make some free Voip-Voip calls between devices, that way you'll learn.
Okay, for now, I can skip the complex stuff...
All I need is a way to make and receive calls from normal land and mobile US phones over wifi alone, when there is no signal... even when out of the country.
I have a PBX account, a sipgate account, and sipdroid, truphone, fring, and google voice on my Droid X.
I'm only just starting to get an idea of what does what.
I'm not looking for free necessarily, but I also can't invest a ton in this... I just want to be reachable for the next three weeks.

Sipgate should work - along with sipdroid.
You need to learn how to put your sipgate login credentials into Sipdroid (Proxy, user name, password)
Once you successfully have connected SipDroid to your SipGate account, anytime someone calls your Sipgate number it will ring on sipdroid (assuming you have sipdroid running.
I can probably help you if you'd like, it can be a little confusing .. but I think if you dig into the proxy and register server settings you'll get this figured out.
One more thing. Make sure wherever you are going has a good connection back to sipgate... just having wifi doesn't mean anything. A good connection (ping times less than 100 ms and plenty of bandwidth) will be the key factors.

Thanks, I'm going to try this as my last ditch effort before I'm gone tomorrow... Any way to make my number the google voice number, or would that force me back to using 3G only?
Fyi, I used to have, well still do but don't use it much, my sipgate number forwarded to my google voice all setup through sipdroid, which is about the most consistent android sip client, which in turn allowed free calls (us atleast) over wifi & data. If you search xda for sipdroid or google for that matter you should find some good setup how to's.

Exactly. Have your G-Voice number call the Sipgate number.
The original how-to was in the G1 XDA development area I believe. SIPdroid and IPKall, along with Google Voice and Google Voice Callback should be all you need to get by. I have unlimited incoming and outgoing calls, as well as unlimited texting both ways. As far as out of country goes, I'm not sure what the deal is with that. But here are some links.

I actually had to use my G1 as a wifi only phone for over a year when I was broke and couldn't afford anything. It definitely was better than nothing, and without android I would have really been screwed. Hope this helps.
It's nice to have that option, as long as you have descent wifi. I also noticed sipgate was more reliable then gizmo, for me atleast, but if you want to get serious about it, set it all up through pbx or your own server.

Google Voice and Skype Working on Tab

So here is what I did... I now have a working VOIP phone service via my T-Mobile Tab..
-- Get the hacked Skype App (allows 3G calling) http://www.megaupload.com/?d=156KWZVH
-- Get Google Voice from Market
-- Go to skype.com and setup an account
-- Order a Skype Internet Number (it's $30 for a year right now -- normally $60)
-- Add a Skype calling plan ( I went with $2.99 a month for unlimited calling)
-- Set Skype to display your Google Voice Number (Caller ID Settings)
-- Set Google Voice to forward all calls to your Skype number
-- Go into Google Voice App and set it up to use your Skype number for voicemail notifications.
It works and it works pretty darn well...
Pros:
--Incoming and outgoing voice capabilities
--Unlimited calling in the US and Canada for $2.99 a month
--With 3G data plan you always have phone functions to dial out and receive
--Use Google Voice for SMS messages and you only have the one number.
Cons:
--If you don't want to use the Google Voice number for SMS then you will have 2 numbers. The one that came on your Tab that is used for SMS/MMS and a number for phone usage.
--Price for this to work per year amounts to $66 ($30 for the Skype number and $36 for the unlimited plan) Not really a con if you consider this is the total cost for a year of unlimited cell (VOIP) calls from you Tab
--If you use Google Voice for SMS it does not do MMS
Here is how it works...
When someone calls your Google Voice number it forwards it to the Skype number and the Tab rings...
When you call someone it displays your Google Voice number...
COOL....
Thanks for telling step-by-step to this workaround... couple of more cons, for me anyway.
1) a big con for me is that it means I can't port my existing cell no. to my new Tab... and since I'm a consultant and it's been my phone no. for a long time... that's kind of a drag.
2) Also, I've heard Skype call quality is sketchy at times?
3) No 911 calling via Skype I beleive?
thoughts pls?
ps... I suppose if I just kept my Sprint plan and went to phone only and kept my Pre I could just call forward my cell no. to Google voice?
I ported my previous cell number to my Tab...
Skype can be sketchy if on a slow or weak 3G or Wifi connection... I have had no problems with it yet though...
Yes, no 911 calling.... But you can program your local police / fire / EMS non emergency dispatch center number as a contact... That's what I did... Granted it's not as fast to get answered as 911, but it is a suggestion...
I don't see why you could not forward the previous cell # to GV then have it forwarded to Skype. Then set the Caller ID in Skype to display your previous cell number... Should work...
I might give this a try and see how I like.... since the phone flashing seems to be stuck at 2G plus a few other problems at this point....
Thanks much for the instructions...!
I decided to do this route as opposed to flashing the other way... Flashing the Euro ROM does still have issues and even once they are worked out, I can't see a US carrier adding voice to the Tab... Even with flashing the Euro ROM you will still need another SIM card to use that has voice functions enabled on it (hence, a different number like this process requires)...
Many people already have my GV number so this was also an easy way to get phone function without much effort... And at $66 a year for unlimited voice, I don't see a carrier plan even coming close to that...
Please Elaborate
@raqball
How does it work? Is it smooth?
My wife has a Skype account, does it have to be the unlimited calls or do you use the free calls from skype?
I really would love to see a YouTube vid please, or just a demo, I need to feel confident to give back the MyTouch 4G for this
Cause if it's like that, I am going to go and give back the MyTouch and get the tab for the Both of us tomorrow!

I did this for months on my old Milestone (Droid) due to me being in Canada and everyone I knew being back in the US (and all calls to the US are int'l long distance via cell) until I found a way to make GV work here in Canada via normal phone lines.
Yes, call quality via Skype is sketchy at times, depending on connection quality, and there's ALWAYS lag.
Call forwarding works fine.
I wouldn't sweat 911, but then again I have almost no respect for that service anyway.
How stable has this been running for the ones using it?

Any way to do this without Skype? Can't pay for everything :/ Will GV just work?
You'll need some sort of VOIP to make it work, but it doesn't have to be Skype.
Keep in mind, Google Voice is NOT a VOIP service, it's a fancy call forwarding and voicemail service that also lets you pick a free US phone number for life.
And folks, there's always Sipdroid and a SIP number service (there's quite a few besides Gizmo)

Awesome post! I will probably do this tomorrow. $60 a year is a small price to pay to finally make my Tab a phone.
I currently only have the Google Voice app installed (no hacked Skype). When I go into my contacts (app which came with Tab) and I click on a contact, and then click the message icon, a little screen pops up asking if I want to complete the action using Messaging or Google Voice. Furthermore, you can check the "Use by default for this action" to always use Google Voice for texting. When I click Google Voice the text shows up to other people as my Google Voice number.
If the trick in this thread can use your Google Voice number as what shows up to other people as your caller ID, wouldn't this simplify you down again to one number (the Google Voice number)?
the problem with this is skype doesnt work with Bluetooth headset. so you either have to get a WIRED headset or use speaker phone which means no privacy

Good point, decisions decisions! For me I may be willing to sacrifice MMS for the simplicity of one phone number. I would justify it by using video calling, YouTube posting, and Facebook/Picasa pictures. I'm already giving up the native Email app because it puts weird labels on my Gmail emails instead of archiving emails like the Gmail app. So much for "native tablet optimized apps."
Cons for this route:
No 911 support
Two phone numbers or no MMS
Complicated calling procedure through Skype
Pros:
Delicious Galaxy Tab
so is everyone just got to use there tab with speaker phone ? because unless u use a wired headset that what u get since the TAB only has a speaker on the bottom.

Do You Use Google Voice?

In reading the forums here for a while now, it seems like hardly anyone uses Google Voice for anything. This surprises me, since I've always used GV and I can't imagine not using it. I mean, it lets you read/write/manage your SMS messages on your computer (ie I don't have to pull out my phone to text people if I'm at my computer), lets you make/receive calls straight to your computer (ie I don't have to pull my phone out necessarily if I want to make/receive a call and I'm at my computer), calls made/received on your computer don't count against your minutes, and if you happen to still have a MyFaves plan (and I know several of you do) you can set GV as one of your Faves and have all calls made/received with your handset free as well. The only problem I've ever had with it is that it sends/receives SMS messages over your data network, so if you're somewhere where the data connection is clogged (like I was when I was at a music festival recently), you can't send/receive texts. Even so, with all these advantages (some of them pretty huge IMO), why does it seem like no one uses it?
So, do you? If not, why not?
I use it and have regularly text/mms blocked.
Use it for texting and voice mail.
Not perfect, many things I would like improved, but definitely worth it for me.
I only use it for voicemail

I'm curious, what would you like to see improved? Personally, I'd like to be able to send mass texts from my phone, and to be able to send/receive MMS. I know you can send "mass" (to like five recipients, which, I mean, I've never needed to send a text to more than five people, so that's worked fine for me) texts through GV on a computer, but I can't get it to work on my phone.
I use it for international calls, international TXTing (no longer avail.), and craigslist or similar type of communication with people I don't want to share my real phone no. with.
I also use it in conjunction with Gizmo5 when I'm overseas. Sometimes I use this method when my minutes approach the limit.
MMS please! It's about time. This is the only reason why I still have to use my actual phone number.

Or you could use email. Or you could upload the picture to dropbox and SMS a dropbox link. Or you could share on any of the other numerous photoshare sites. There's a million ways around the MMS issue if you need to send some crucial media message, but I agree that it would be nice to have the functionality regardless.
We need pitcher messages, at least pitcher hosting so other people can just click the link. I use Google Voice but it's not perfect, it's not that fast.. it needs to be faster.
I just use it for the vm to text. That's pretty handy. I don’t have to talk to or even listen to people anymore!

First I love GV. I have it routed to my home via sip, my cell with the GV app and when I'm traveling with the client built into gmail.
Improvement:
1. MMS would be great. Yes, I could use the cell or gmail but... it would be nice if it were incorporated into GV.
2. The GV organization for messaging (both the app and website) is well, basic. I don't get why all texts from one person can not stay in one convo. Makes it harder to find old text messages.
3. I would like to see more way to initiate conference calls
4. international calls could be cheaper. Yes they are cheaper than skype but that is not cheap... On my phone I use the voxofon app and at home voip with callwithus.
5. petty maybe, but I wish I could adjust the time before VM kicks in.

I would also *love* to have all my texts from a single person organized into per-person threads, and wonder why there's not a simple way to do this.
This is kind of interesting...

Need MMS and also we REALLY need an alternative GV app.
Maybe one day Go SMS, Chomp or Handcent will support GV. That would be nice.
I love it and use it for my voicemail.
I have a Seattle number that most of my friends know, but upon moving to Arizona, being able to have an AZ local number was a big plus. Now I can have 2 numbers on one cell and not have to update any of my long-term contacts of a number change or any of that nonsense.
I use it, but I don't really love it.
I do not like their voicemail service AT ALL, however I like the convenience of giving people my google voice number, people whom I don't necessarily like
I use it for all my vmails, and for texting. I may even lower my texting package from tmo soon to save a few bucks. I can block people easily, can set custom greetings for different groups of people, and I can even use my bluetooth to make phone calls via my PC bypassing the need for a big voice package.
I use it for voicemail primarily and its the number I give out to businesses and people I don't really care to talk to so I can screen the calls. I also use it more when I don't have my phone on me or im on the computer

I used to use it but I found it redundant and some people didn't appreciate having to keep up with so many phone numbers (GV, Business, Real Vibrant number). It doesn't support MMS so that made it hard to use exclusively.
Plus, I could do without those services running in the background.
It's nice for when you're selling stuff on CraigsList and don't want to give your real number, though.
I do hate Google for making it impossible for us to take our numbers off without giving another real number, or removing Google Voice from our Google Account.
But a quick phone number change took care of that.
I use it for texting some people that i dont want to have my real tmo number.I still have the unlimited texts....i've been thinking of dropping unlimited texting from my plan. I wish I had myfaves so I could have unlimited free calling with it...gotta find a way to get myfaves...hope tmo brings it back.
Its also great for using online, for example, Craigslist etc. Overall I think its great and I can't wait for more innovative features to be added.

Please school me on SIP and SIP Sorcery

I have a rooted Droid X and have really enjoyed finding ways to tinker with my phone to get additional benefits from my device. Previously, I have been getting completly free VOIP calls by running the hacked version of Skype that allows for functionality over both 3G and Wifi. I paid $30 (so not completely free) to Skype for an annual unlimited calling plan to all of North America. The quality is pretty good over 3G and even better over wifi. However, when I call people, my number shows up as unknown. I could pay Skype for an actual #
($60) to remedy this so that people could call me back, but I've held off for now. If someone wants to talk, it is easy for them to text me and I can call them back since I don't always leave my phone on 24/7.
Recently, I decided to play around with SIP technology as a way to have an alternative to Skype and to have a reason to tinker. I already had a Google Voice # and set up a free account at sipgate.com Then I set up my Google Voice # to forward all calls only to my sipgate #.
I also downloaded Google Voice Free Forwarding app from the marketplace and configured that so that whenever I make an outbound call via the standard dialer or through my CSIPSIMPLE widget, the call will pause, google voice free callback will intercept the call and allow me to talk to my desired # completely free with no minutes used. The drawback is that it can take 15-20 seconds for the call to go through and the call quality doesn't seem to be as good as when using Skype---both on 3g and wifi. But, to be fair, it is completely 100% free calling and cheaper than Skype.
Recently, I had the opportunity to acquire a Gizmo5 account and a Sip Sorcery account and am curious to know how I can use these to enhance my sip experience on my android phone.
I know there is a plethora of info on both of these services, so I don't expect anyone to hold my hand or reinvent the wheel. However, I just want to know what some of the possibilities may be.
Since I already have Skype and already have a sip service setup through Google voice, sipgate, and Google Voice Callback, will Gizmo or Sip Sorcery allow me to have a better experience in terms of quality, ease of use, or quickness when it comes to connecting the call.
It looks like Gizmo my have some integration through Google Voice that other #s don't offer but does it really offer any major advantages?
Personally I only use SIP when connecting to my asterisk server on my VPS to make my calls untraceable and to spoof my callerid for free. Also, I don't really like the SIP services out there.... and I especially don't like Skype's VoIP service. If you are looking for a good SIP app however.... get SIPdroid. (I believe that's what I use)
