Hey everyone, being as this is a webcast about Android Development I'm not sure if it belongs here or in "General" so Mods please move it if you think it doesn't belong.
Anyway, lets get on the AT&T webcast tomorrow and bug them about bootloader access, you do have to register to participate but it's easy enough. It begins at 11AM PST and says it is an hour long. You need Microsoft Office Live Meeting (or you could call in) but it's free to download.

I fully realize that this may be a futile action but in my experience persistence pays off and I'm not done bothering them quite yet, maybe 6 months down the road if they still aren't doing anything for us I'll give, but not yet!

Because AT&T is behind 99pct of the problems with the Atrix:
- No Side Loading - AT&T
- Reduced Speeds - AT&T
- No Root Access - AT&T
Motorola made it pretty clear pre-release they wanted to open up the bootloader, AT&T obviously shut that down.

I think (When it comes to their "bootloader solution") what they meant to say was "We do what we think is right when it comes to working with devs and customers, and will continue to do so in the future". And, what everyone took that to mean was "THEY ARE GONNA UNLOCK THE BOOTLOADER FOR US". I'm not saying I agree AT ALL, I just sometimes try to look at it from both sides.
I definitely want this thing unlocked, but I'm not counting on Moto to do too much about it. Not to say opinions shouldn't be voiced!
No one should be blaming ATT for the locked bootloader. Motorola's Droids (except for OG Droid) all have been locked down and they are on Verizon's network. Feel free to blame ATT for upload speeds, fake 4G, no sideloading, global warming, etc...
The Motorola employee that's going to be there is an application developer. He's unlikely to know anything about, much less have an answer for, anything about the bootloader. Harassing employees makes the entire community look bad and childish. If you have a REAL problem with it, other than bandwagon hatred for something a lot of you clearly don't understand, follow the appropriate channels. Lawyer up and file a formal complaint. Harassing them over the internet won't get you anywhere. If you REALLY believe that it's changed anything so far, I'm sorry you're that ignorant.
All the whining and harassing got nowhere, but when a thought out, well written petition was put into place and formal requests were made, look what happened: Motorola released their source. They didn't do it to "appease the masses", or to "shut us up." They did it because the proper channels were followed and they honored that. You have to understand that the amount of people who want the bootloader unlocked is a very, VERY small portion of their total userbase. It's entirely ignorant to claim that everyone wants this. Motorola isn't some evil overlord who wants their users to hate them. They're a business. Do you honestly think they'll care if a few hundred users out of the hundreds of thousands they have leave over the bootloader being locked? Unlikely. They've recognized the issue, and have announced they will have a solution for developers soon, which is more than they're even obligated to do in the first place. They don't owe you anything, having such an entitled attitude is hurtful to the entire process. Be patient.

I second Ririal. Those two that are going to be presenting tomorrow are evangelists, and are going to be pretty in the dark about the situation.

Devs being there should be good for a prediction on where Moto plans to take the Atrix... wonder if we can ask questions in a round about way to see if they slip on how they unlock the bootloader to develop on the phone... lol yea I know wishful thinking this isn't a cartoon or movie lol but one can dream... I have a meeting tomorrow and can't participate in the webcast.
However, would somebody _please_ tell them that there are companies out there who really want to develop applications for the webtop.
I have the go-ahead at work to port our primary Linux/X Windows application to the webtop on the Atrix, but cannot move forward so long as hacking/rooting the device is necessary. We can only develop using officially authorized channels.
Thanks in advance for anyone who can bring this up to them.

The petition I've started doesn't actually complain about anything, it asks for an announcement at the very least. Just something for Developers to be hopeful for. It also just requests an option for Developers not for everyone.
We are working very hard to follow the right channels on the topic and generate positive support to show Motorola that there is an enthusiastic user-base out there.

Absolutely. I saw your petition and have signed it. I'd love to see them, at the very least, give us an answer. We may not like it, but at least we'd have one instead of empty promises right now. No need to get upset about it, though

Being able to create/load webtop apps would be an awesome feature that would turn the webtop from an interesting sideshow to a must-have.
I am hesitant to spend anything on the lapdock because I don't think it would be much more useful than the phone itself. If I could throw OpenOffice down on there or something using apt-get then I would totally buy it.
I understand that Moto might want to control the user experience, as nobody is going to be doing any high-powered computation or gaming on it, but third-party apps would be really neat.

My opinion:
If Carrier IQ doesn't have anything to hide, I would like to see the following information released from them:
a) Disclose EXACTLY what data they collect and display formatting and reports associated with them.
b) Disclose EXACTLY what improvements has come from the data collected.
c) Disclose EXACTLY what security measures they have been using to protect privacy
d) Disclose EXACTLY how many people have access from their side, and to what department they get delivered AND what security measures are being used in the process of delivery to the end user (companies that work with them)
e) Disclose EXACTLY WHY they don't have an Opt-Out option if they are really not doing anything shady.
f) Based on the YouTube video that proved that they are collecting more than anonymous information, they should prove beyond reasonable doubt to the public that their software doesn't collect / send this data to them.
This will not keep everyone (or myself) at peace but its a start in the right direction....

I would add that - So, if 160+ million devices with CarrierIQ were set to communicate or "call home" all at once there would be no Denial of Service on whomever is collecting whatever.. /sarcasm
After all, at first it was said that no data was being transmitted, then it changed to no personal data was being transmitted, then the "blame game and finger pointing" began.. next week it will be no financial data is being transmitted.
So which is it?
The other question I have is for AV (AntiVirus/Security) vendors who make a lot of claims against Android and call it unsecured.. Why didn't your product (paid or free) catch and remove CarrierIQ as it was discovered months ago and by most "modern" standards is a Rootkit?

Ha I know what you mean. It is what it is you always have to protect your self especially from gov that sells your info for cash. I believe there is an app that shreds your text messages, using a third party app instead of the manufactures one to protect urself against ex.(tigerwoods) ex mistress, company, and etc, that u dont want them to find out. Always be one step ahead of what your intentions are.
Remember laws are not laws but simply codes and statues that "everybody" agreed upon. You should always defend your self.

I dont think there is anything wrong with carrier IQ. Like if your doing nothing wrong you have nothing to be worried about* but with that being said, it is not right for our phone companies, service providers, CIQ, or even the FBI, to leave us in the dark like this. There really is so much in question and so many assumptions, I just dont see why they cant fill us in, and at least let us know what is going on while we sort out this whole mess...

I have the strangest suspicion that this member, kp263 was trying a scam on me. I posted a message regarding help to fix my bricked LG D858HK, and kp263 contacted me by private messaging requesting. After I sent my number, I received a message, saying; I'm always offline on WhatsApp. I responded; I normally turn my phone off 12.00 am to 8.00 am UK time because I don't want to be disturb at those times when sleeping, but I'm available all the other times. I also mentioned; I'm using another phone, as the LG is bricked (of course). I started to get suspicious and asked; how are you going to repair phone in the UK when you're in India? But, I didn't get a reply, so I contact him again. So he informed me that was away for a few days.
Could this member have been leading me on to a scam? Check this member out - could be dangerous...! But Moderator doesn't seem to be concerned...

Speculation!? As a moderator, you don't seem to be concerned regarding the safety of users on your site! The problem is with my phone, so why did he wanted to access my PC? Why didn't he send me the instruction by private message (like I asked him to), or better yet, publicly, so that others can see, who may be experiencing same or similar problems, so they can refer it his cure? Why didn't he respond to several questions...I'd put to him regarding my concern of him accessing my PC?

you should never give out your number and install software you don't know what it does.
Use common sense, you made a mistake to give out your number and if you installed software you don't know what it does nobody else to blame but yourself.

I'm sure there are novices that use this site that doesn't know the risks... But, I'm not a novice as far as the internet is concerned. I know the dangers and this why I didn't download the software and questioned the dude.
So I'm in a jam with my phone and asked for some genuine help and was hoping I would get it in return, at least so I thought. These scammers should look into by the moderator/s and not ignored but rooted out; because not everyone would be aware of this sort of practice on xda, and is not a matter of common sense. Are you saying you've never given a stranger your mobile number? I sure you have. So where is your common sense that? :silly:

Do you have any idea how many accusations are made similar to this on this site of almost 8 million users? So YES we need proof of wrong doing. The message you reported was a simple Whatsapp request. No where did he ask for access to your computer. He did suggest he could fix your problem with Teamviewer. Generally these members are not scammers but are trying to sell you their repair service. When we have proof of attempted sales, then the accounts are removed.

This dude was shady... If I wasn't alert and aware of these type of scams and fraud, I would have let him have his wicked way and could have scammed me. I not gonna deal with someone in India when am in the UK and especially the way he wanted me too. No way!
As a good and responsible citizen and trying to help to stomp out scamming and fraud, my original message to you was to make you aware of the situation..., but your replied was sarcastically... When I get scamming emails and forward them on to the banks, etc, they thank me for informing them - unlike you. Your statement above (Thank you for bringing this member...) would have been just nice in the first place. There is another guy on your team (who was very nice - not sarcastic) that I sent the message to in the first place but he instructed me to contact the moderator because he didn't deal with that area. As a good and responsible citizen and trying to help to stomp out scamming and fraud, my original message to you was to make you aware of the situation..., but your replied was sarcastically... When I get scamming emails and forward them on to the banks, etc, they thank me for informing them - unlike you. Your statement above (Thank you for bringing this member...) would have been just nice in the first place. Sure...but as I said...they generally try to sell you a service under the radar of XDA moderators because selling of anything on this site is not allowed except in the paid app section. That is the shady part. We remove these types daily once we get evidence of them asking for money. The repair is usually legitimate. Thanks for adding to our evidence against this member.
So others thank you and do nothing, but I tell you we need evidence and then do something...which would you prefer. By the way I am still awaiting an answer to that PM.
@Soundboy There are many legitimate people out there that will help people through teamviewer out of the kindness of their heart. So next time present more evidence than a Whatsapp request and offer to go on teamviewer. Back in the Epic 4G days of 2011 I helped someone through it and know of another good friend that helped members through teamviewer all day long and only for whatever they wanted to donate to him, even if it was nothing. So your paranoia was insufficient to act on without evidence.
I 100% agree with @DJ_MiX . I can't believe I have to say this, but, this world is full of nefarious people out to do you harm. If you expect any website to be able to protect you from every single user, you are in for a shock. Welcome to the internet. :highfive:
Receiving a private message instead of answering your question publicly in the forums should have been a large red flag and warning sirens for you. That's like getting cold called at your house and the person asking for financial information.
These forums are not for one-on-one help. They are for public questions, answers, and discussions so that everyone benefits. I personally would only use private messaging with users who have a long history on the forums. And even then, there's rarely a reason to do so.
You seem nice and you seem like you mean well, just be vigilant and do your due diligence whenever possible. Evil folks prey on the naive. I will personally not be able to help you out with your particular issue, but good luck!

Maybe paranoia... But you haven't seen my messages I sent to him via Whatsapp, asking for his legitimacy... But of no surprise, he didn't respond to them.

I'm always aware and suspicious about private messages, emails, letters and phone calls I get from people I don't know offering their services, e.g. like paying upfront. I always tell them to take a hike! I get them all the time; even from these pretty-young-nice-figure-babes on facebook. It's like; "You're a gorgeous babe; but why you want to friend an old fart like me, old enough to be your granddad or even your great grandad?" They're gone, man! So yes; I'm an internet savvy and on the money! :highfive:
My initial message was only to make you guys aware... I do it all the time; forwarding suspicious contacts to Banks, PayPal, Facebook and Action Fraud. I'm only just trying to make the world a bit safer

Regarding your PM... I've already responded to it yesterday via reply to the email. But since it seems you haven't received it, here it is again: I did google Teamviewer...and that is why I didn't download it to my PC. And yes, I do get lots of Prince in Nigeria..., etc, etc and phone calls too but I don't fall for them. So no, not foolish. I'm not new to the internet but on your site. In fact, I'm a savvy on the internet and know of the dangers.
The account countfox: because when I first join I made a spelling mistake with my username and after about 4 times of asking Brendon to edited he failed to deal with it, so I set up another account. But it was changed by another person in the end after I contacted him. So, I kept on using Soundboy because my message was already on it. If there was a way for me to edit or delete them myself I would have done so instead of relying on you guys. Anyway, you can delete both of them because they no use to me now.

I've been browsing the internet trying to find a workaround for telus throttling my data after 30GB. I'm on an unlimited plan, and after the 30GB it's reduced to 512kbps. It's useable, but it's not enjoyable. I often see it jump to full speeds, then slowly throttle back down to 425ish kbps.
I'm on iPhone at the moment, but was considering picking up an Android device if it's possible. I've looked at a couple things like Shadowsocks proxy, a http injection technique that disguises data coming and going, but I think that's on a per carrier basis?
All in all, I'm just trying to find a solution to this that could be done on iPhone 4s, SE, or if I need an android device to even consider it. Thanks for the help and sorry for the slightly off topic nature of this.
