Buying TF101 Friday anything I should know? - Eee Pad Transformer General

Yeah I really want one. I'm not interested in prime yet since there's nothing new coming out for it yet. I really dont see the point of spending 500 dollars on it
Anyway is there anything or any user problems I should know about TF1 or should I looking for something else
Thank you

Or he might not. There have been numerous, well documented issues around the lack of QA on the Prime's release.
The real question is WHAT are you going to use the tablet for? If you want high powered Android gaming then maybe you SHOULD look at the Prime. I think all the really defective ones are out of the supply chain now. But if you buy the Prime and GPS is important to you, expect to buy an external GPS puck or find a way for your phone to supply GPS.
What should you know about the TF101?
ICS is currently expected in early to mid Feb.
The battery life rocks, and with the dock is incredible.
Tablet is rootable, but the bootloader is encrypted.
CWM and some nice ROMs are available, Krakd and Revolver are the most popular. I can't make a recommendation, I just installed Krakd about 20 min ago.
If you get the keyboard/dock and the cursor randomly jumps from field to field turn off the touch pad.

I don't think so. I'm perfectly happy with my TF101 and plan on using it for a while. The duo core tablet won't be outdated for at least a couple more years. Remember that the prime's only real advantage over the OG is gaming. If the OP doesn't game, there's really no point in getting the prime.

I picked up a used one on craigslist two weekends ago. Absolutely love it. Not having the quad core hasnt bothered me and having the extra 300 dollars in my pocket (got it for 350 with a dock) was well worth it.
I have had issues trying to get a custom rom on it. Mine is rooted .21 but not so clear on how to get the recovery on there for some reason.
I have had zero problems (operational) the past two weeks with my TF101. Completely enjoy having it.

Thats my plan. Its rooted with root saver(if that works as planned) so we shall see. I am completely satisfied with this purchase.

Thanks guys.. I have to say I was thinking about the hype of the prime. There is no doubt that that machine looks amazing on paper... But I am not a gamer at all, that's why I was looking at the OG Transformer. Thanks for the clarification and the recommendations.

As a householder with 2 TF101s, 2 Ipads and a Blackberry Playbook, I can honestly not fault the Transformers. They belong to the kids and never cease to amaze me what they are capable of doing with them. Apart from hardcore gaming, I struggle to think what the advantage of quadcore would be.

awesome thank you guys

i do use my tablet for games sometimes as you can see on my sig. i have a ps3 so i dont really care about games much except when im in college. but im going to buy PSVITA in couple weeks for that. anyway i think TF1 would be great for my college work and stuff
i didnt know the bootloader was encrypted
thats the only reason why i sold my A100 in the first place. because the bootloader was locked. i couldn't mess with it or anything
and i agree with some of you. i dont see the point of getting TF prime now. since there are so many issues with it.

I returned my Prime and bought the TF101. Now I have no more headaches.

TF 101 rocks
For the money I and less hassles I would get the TF101, personally I think serious gaming on a tablet is not worth an upgrade to a prime. The controller situation is not great or even good compared to a console or computer.

only lingering problem I know of is GPS. That isn't huge for most people with a wifi tablet. Original 101 has its problems too like quality control issues and falling AC adapters.
Not to mention the 201 has a faster processor and more cores, typically more storage than the most common 101s. Battery life might be better, screen might be better, etc.

101 has issues too. You must have missed all the threads with people having light bleed, messed up screens (my first one), speaker problems, etc. then my failed AC charger.
Also Asus said they will be unlocking the bootloader on the prime soon. Not sure what happened with doing it on the 101...

There are still some units being shipped with light bleed.
And they used pogo pins for connecting the WiFi and GPS antennae to the boards, so this is a hardware issue and it can be fixed, but it is still problematic in random units.

Make sure when you purchase you check under direct sunlight for dust under screen mine had several specs bottom left and also light bleed from bottom I replaced 2 units I love mine [email protected]

To Xoom or not to Xoom

Hi guys my wife just got me a Wifi Xoom from Costco for my birthday. I want to see how everybody feels about their Xoom and if I should return it and wait for a newer tablet. I already have a rooted Evo 4g so I don't need the 3g version of the Xoom.
I'd great appreciate some feedback.
Thanks

Can I ask how much you paid for it? I was in Costco MK yesterday and I didn't see any in there so I got mine from PC World instead.

I've had my Xoom for a little over a week and think it's the best thing I've ever owned. My iPad doesn't even compare and ended up giving it to my kids. Love the form factor, great screen and Honeycomb rocks. I highly recommend keeping it if you like Android.
On the other hand, the iPad is much more "dummy proof" and much better for someone not very technical.

I think the question is, what are you planning to use the tablet for? The Xoom still has some features that are a little better than some tablets, and is also missing features compared to some others. Also if cost is a concern, you are almost guaranteed to be better off in 3-6 months since the newer series will be out by then and you'll see discounted clearance prices.
SO, tell us what you think you're going to do, and how comfortable you are in waiting, and I think we can better answer your question.

Ill mostly use it for reading and surfing the net. Also ill be doing the usually nerdy stuff by trying out new ROMs and such.
I wasn't considering an iPad, I was more curious about if the performance isn't up to par, and if I should wait for a better honeycomb tablet.

These questions are so stupid. It's like asking if you would prefer a blue dress or the red one with laces... C'mon dude, there is an argument on both sides on whether or not you should keep the xoom, wait for another tablet or get an ipad. At the end of the day, it depends on your personal preference, your knowledge of computers/ android os and YOU doing research. Everyone's taste is different! If you don't like the question dude then don't read it. The subject made it pretty obvious what the question was.
Back to the question: I've had the Xoom since Feb 24 and like it a lot. I use it primarily for web browsing, news reading (RSS), email and FB, and the occasional game. I had an iPad for 8 months and was sick of the iOS limitations so happily gave it up.
The only thing I don't like about the Xoom is the rear facing speakers. When watching a video on the web or doing a video chat, to hear the sound good I either have to really crank the volume up, or cup the speakers to get the sound to come forward.
Thanks for the feedback. I've been playing with it all morning. I'm still trying figure out the best way to type on it though. Browsing isn't as smooth as I would like and it is a little heavier than I would like. My kindle spoiled me there. Everything else seems work pretty well. Email, tapatalk, google reader work well on the tablet.
Still trying to find useful 'tablet' apps though.

I picked up a wifi Xoom the other day, since I decided it's a keeper it's already rooted and isn't going anywhere. I also have a Viewsonic G Tablet which is nice but doesn't hold a candle to the Xoom. The G Tablet is now for hacking and testing software that I'm developing.

Right now its not a great deal having a xoom. For me its been kind of a dissapointment the apps support. Not even google have updated theyre own apps! they work but are not for tablet and low awful. The apps from big company names like facebook, twitter, etc havent even bother to upgrade to honeycomb. Maybe in 5 month we will find more than 20 apps for tablet (if you are from other country other than us. you cant install many honeycomb apps), but by that time xoom will be obsolete and there will be xoom 2 or whatever

You do realize that the Honeycomb/tablet interface 3.0 is a mere 9 weeks old? Apple's IOS for tablets had already been out for roughly 55 weeks and had the the advantage of using existing iphone apps from June of 2007?
I believe Android didn't come around until November of 2009.
It took Apple quite some time to deliver apps and polish the software to where it is today.
It does take time and I would think Google is prepared to put up a hell of a fight.
interesting discussion guys, I am about to decide whether to buy xoom or ipad 32GB wifi.
Simple user, prefer a stable and trouble free tablet for daily use. Occasional movie, email, light gaming and some ebook reading. Wont be experimenting much. Almost decided on xoom, any last moment advise?
I love my Xoom. My only concern is the lack of apps. I think 6 months from now it won't be an issue.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App
The XOOM is waiting for one or more important software updates. The XOOM was the first HC tablet and has been out the longest. I have also yet to see these other tablets advertised (as) much. Which one will get the most app / accessory support? My bet is on the XOOM regardless of which tablet ends up being technically superior later in the year. When things don't end up working as well other tablets (even though they perhaps should) as the XOOM, I'll be mostly unaffected.
The LG G-Slate has a smaller screen and lacks a SD Card Slot. The newer Samsung Galaxy Tab lacks a built-in HDMI port. The HTC Flyer may have their Sense UI Skin on it, I personally dislike manufacturer skins. The ASUS Transformer's build quality is not as good IMO but it can be had cheaper and supports mouse usage with optional dock. The Toshiba Tablet will have a full SD Card size card slot. Rea search the differences, decide what is important to you.

Still a Buyable Device

So NewEgg has a deal on the Galaxy tab currently (30 dollars off plus 50 dollar gift card) and was wondering if it is still something worth buying. Considering the progress made with HC as is, I can only expect it to get better if/when Google releases source.
For the price, is it still something you would buy today?
I just bought mine a couple of weeks ago and have no complaints. It gets used way more than my Asus Transformer does. I love the 7" screen, perfect size for me.

Exactly. Try reading a book with a 10" device always seem to need two hands. Typing with both thumbs on the Tab vs finger pecking on the transformer. The size of the 7" is perfect for me.

its worth buying if you can get a deal.
As mentioned above 7" is a major bonus. By implication though it means you really want 3G as well. When I was contracting (and hence moving around, taking a lot of different public transport routes etc.) it was an awesome travel companion. It also makes it a great ereader in a pinch.
Custom ROM it and performance is pretty good, esp. as Samsung's browser is hardware accelerated.
If its going to be sitting on your coffee table w/ wifi though, or the price is comparable to a 'current' honeycomb Tegra 2 10" slab, I'd go honeycomb/dual core. There's not much of an upgrade path for it, honeycomb is going to be an unofficial port (if at all?)
I got mine at a knockdown price and really like it. However I still wouldn't have paid RRP for it (by the same token I'm not paying RRP for transformer etc. or even ipad so duh)

Agreed... pretty easy to find on ebay or CL for $250 or less... picking up another one tomorrow for $200... Almost as good a deal as the HP TP and a lot more clarity about its future, apps, upgradability, etc.
It's still a great device. Is it the newest and latest? Nope. Will it run tons of great apps and be a solid performer for most of your uses? Sure! Now is also the time to snap up cheap discounted cases and other accessories for the 7".
I flashed the Overcome ROM on mine after I was tired of waiting on T-Mobile for the 2.3 update. That's a great ROM. Super battery life, video calling (with FFC working great) via Google Talk, excellent ebook reader, calls over Google Voice with Groove IP, etc etc.
I say this even though I also have the Galaxy 10.1. That's for lazy home use. I can take the 7" with me just about everywhere.

funny, I have the same mindset/usage pattern between my Galaxy Tab and my iPad...
I been hearing great things about the SGS2 so I set aside the cash for it and yesterday went to get it but came back without making the purchase.
When I held it in my hands I just couldnt figure out how the puny screen could be any better than my SGT. Battery life is similar, I can run similar or same applications and both can do depending on what I install from the market. With the custom ROMs my SGT OS is probably higher version, less buggy and smoother than what I would get on the SGS2. Yea there might be some new high tech capabilities but do I need it. Most likely not and at this time don't even know what they are.
So I gave up the idea of going smaller than the 7". Quite a while back I kicked the idea of going bigger than 7". I can still put my SGT in my back pocket or my jacket breast pocket and cary it with me anywhere. Try doing that with anything biger than 7".
For me there is absolutely no good reason to go for anything else for a while.
Yep, still worth buying.

I'm looking at buying another used one for $200CDN for my GF. She prefers the Galaxy Tab over the Transformer as well.
I'm thinking about buying 3 of these for the office because of the portability. It would make a great tool for our QC department.
Definitely worth buying. Look at my signature of what I have had and look at which tab is still standing. The 7" form factor is the best. Not to mention this thing plays any video I've thrown at it. Such was not the case for the others tabs.

But it still only has one speaker grill...i wonder if this is replacing the Prime...even tho they say it's not, because of the gps and wifi issues.

Not supposed to be replacing the Prime but basically is being that it is the same cost but new features.
All i can say is i feel this is the result of asus trying to rush products to the market so they could be the only quad core tablet of 2011 with hopes of ics....and FUMBLE they did in my opinion with all the shipping nightmares and recalled devices and gps joke...
in comes the tf700t in a vain attempt to please alot pissed off customers. people can say "oh i wont use the gps so it doesnt matter" all they want to and i still call BS, if i buy something like this the gps is a standard feature anymore and should deinetly be there and work. they know it thats why they are fixing it with this model. NICE TRY ASUS.... i love my tf and i will probably get a prime all though the new lenovo s2 10 with docking keyboard that looks copied straight from asus is looking quite nice as well, basically theres alot of nice stuff coming out and asus will have to get away from crap like this to remain the pc company they are.

Blame it on all the people who whined and whined and whined about the prime not arriving in time.
I said this months ago. I'd rather wait a couple months for a polished product than getting screwed over a rushed product.
This happened with my brother as well. He paid top dollars for an architect and a crew to build his custom made home. Towards the end, they asked him for 3 more weeks to get things polished. He said no and pointed them to the contract. What resulted were noticeable places put together in a hurry. He ended up having to hire the same crew again to fix up his house while he and his family lived in a hotel for weeks.

Sticking with the OG TF?

So I have been reading a lot of threads recently about people debating upon the two, and just wanted to know who plans on upgrading and whos staying.
Personally I own the OG Transformer, rooted of course, and have no intentions to update, a new processor is not going to get me to give up my pride and joy!
I'm honestly glad to have a TF101 now and didn't sell it off to get a Prime. With all of the problems with the Prime (poor wifi, removed GPS functionality) I am happy to have let it pass by. That said, I am kinda drooling over the just announced TF700T.... basically a re-designed Prime to fix wifi/gps and with a 1920x1200 resolution!!! Yummy!!!
The TF Prime looks pretty half baked. By the looks of it Asus more or less released a beta product and then charged 500 bucks for it. Once problems started cropping up they announce the TF700 as an "upscale" version of the original Prime which was fraught with issues. I think I will stick to my original TF101 to see if anyone with a clue makes a compelling upgrade for me.

That said, I am kinda drooling over the just announced TF700T.... basically a re-designed Prime to fix wifi/gps and with a 1920x1200 resolution!!! Yummy!!!

And the prime dock is supposed to be interchangeable drool lol
I got my tranformer in early december as a gift from my mother. I was seriously thinking about selling it and going for the prime but it's sufficient for what i use it for. Like everyone else I'm seeing a LOT of negative Prime feedback.

There are only two reasons I can see for getting a Prime if you already have the OG.
A.) You just got to have it. Just like that 2012 Lambo in your driveway.
B.) You're in need of a 32GB/$500 price range tablet with a dock and can choose between TF101-B1 and TF202-B1.
In boat B, I was still tempted to get another TF101-B1 but don't want e.g. a B80 to replace my B50.

I'm a fan of sticking with a device until it no longer suits my needs. my tf does everything I need it to wonderfully. there may be quite a few generations of tablets before I "need" to update.
Now that I have some money, I probably would sell off my transformer to get the TF700T eventually..

The TF Prime looks pretty half baked. By the looks of it Asus more or less released a beta product and then charged 500 bucks for it. Once problems started cropping up they announce the TF700 as an "upscale" version

Asus totally rushed the Prime. Quad core is good and all but they should've spent more time on the OG Transformer. For Example, correcting the power button, light bleeding from the screen, and HONEYCOMB!!! However, in the world of business I guess you have to do everything and anything to remain relevant. I'm Sticking with my Transformer!
Indeed the prime is not even released in most countries and they already announce a new version... they just wanted to be the first on the market and rushed the product release.
ICS is released for it now only a couple of weeks after, as if a normal company wouldn't have waited 2 weeks more for a proper release and as if they didn't know the GPS was borked when they shipped out the product.

i will make up my mind after ics update is released for tf101. HC makes the tablet slightly unresponsive and i can definitely feel the lag here and there. if ics makes all that go away, it just feel like brand new device again for me and i am happy to stick with it until either it's stolen, destroyed or sold
Sticking with the OG as well. It took me a while to get the original one without bleeding on the bottom. Now there's reports that Prime has GPS issues (or GPS is unsupported to begin with due to the unibody design), I very much like my TF101 with working GPS. This is not to ignore that the Prime has a boatload of new features including a better screen, thinner profile, better design, better cameras, better processor, etcetera.
But the TF101 works and Asus is on a tear releasing new tablets way too often, they've just announced the TF700 that probably pissed off some Prime customers.
In all, TF101 works, I got one without problems, I'll keep it until at least a year or two when the landscape has settled and I can see what's coming out or is out and then replace my TF101 with the best Asus tablet then. Selling and buying every time they release a new one is somewhat stupid IMO, especially when Asus is releasing tablets so quickly. It's best to wait IMO until your device becomes old and outdated and unsupported and then choose.

I agree. I will probably keep My transformer for about a year or so. Hell, I still have my HD2 in mint condition. I like to hold on to products until they're obsolete and not just upgraded (e.g. extra camera and memory)
As someone who has a B40 transformer (yeah an oldie) and just got a dock if i were to get another tablet i would be getting a memo. I could afford $250 as an upgrade and it wouldn't have the primes problems, would be much fore pocketable as well as have a tegra 3. Would just need to see what the dev community would be like but at its price...

I totally agree with this, as tempting as the newer models are.........
I like the fact my OG dont show finger prints all over the outside and that it has two speakers.

The speakers are very loud and clear. My friend's laptop speakers can't even compete, despite the fact he paid $200 dollars more lol. I haven't heard the sound on the Prime though, I wonder if its as loud and clear as ours.

Depressing in this forum! ?

I have 2 tf300's and they both have been running just about perfect! I feel horrible about all the negetive experiences I keep reading about. I hope it gets better because its a great tablet.
I'm loving my tablet. It runs very fluid. Way better then I expected. No issues.
Whats the OTA all about? I am so happy with performance I'm scared to update!
Whats new in OTA?
If rooting is something you are interested, dont update before your you can dl voodoo OTA root keeper, and read the post in the development section

me and alot others went thru way worse than this with the prime. we feel the same way. best advice is don't let others dampen your great experience with device. don't let others try to convince you your tablet is defective like theirs. Reality is there will always be people who cry n complain. alot have valid reasons but some like to go overboard on the pity party. Then you will always have some devices that are going to be defective. That's the nature of the beast here, electronics. just enjoy your device n don't let the negativity get to you.
I happen to love my 300 honestly I think its better than the Acer a510 and the Toshiba excite 10. Apperently the excite has terrible light bleed issues.

Well its nice to see a few people being positive. I was going to wait for the tf700 to come out but it was too hard to resist for the price. I had the a500 and I felt jealous of my son with the tf101 with keyboard dock. Plus I had both tf300's rooted and build props updated in 45 minutes. I wish my phones were so easy.
No regrets at all. I am ticked that my sons tf101 got an update today with face unlock and we don't have it. Lol. I love it on my HTC Resound.
PS. Its nice to see the quick updates with Asus. 2 updates on the tf101 in a months time is pretty cool in the android world!
I'm pretty happy with mine, thus far. I had to return the first TF300 I got because it had a flaky touchscreen, but the second one's been working well. The only problem I've noticed is that the sound occasionally gets scratchy. At first I though it was a software issue, but now I'm leaning to it being due to a contact shorting when you squeeze the screen, because I've heard it making that scratchy sound when I do that.
All in all, though, I really like this thing. I can't ever see myself being satisfied with an old-school laptop after this. Having the choice of using it as a laptop or removing the screen and using it as a tablet is just wonderful.
Agreed. While not without a few quirks, the overall experience has been fantastic!

That's really pathetic, according to some suggestions here, we are suppose not only to enjoy but to keep a positive attitude towards our half-baked product. In a few words and based on the suggestions here we need to learn to deal with it and be patient waiting for Asus that eventually will get those issues fixed with a new firmware release.
If the tf300t were a $99 product I wouldn't mind, but I paid $399+$150(dock) for the fist tf101(RMA 3 times), $499+$150 for the tf201 preorder and now $400+$150 for tf300t.
I love ICS, and I love my tf300t as well and will keep it anyway to try new ROMs when they become available, but definitely will get a different brand next time(w/ different SoC, snapdragon or exynos), not Asus anymore.
My question to you would be.. would you tolerate a $550 laptop if it had half of the issues tf300t has.
Other than that I find it really hard to believe some of you have a 100% perfect unit.

Doing great on my end. My 3rd Android device. Use to the quirks of the software now. Much more patient these days than I was 2 years ago. Very happy as far as the hardware goes.
Really have to take forums for electronics with a grain of salt. People get disgruntled, hyperbolic, and very fanboyish.
I just like to vent once in a while
I have several of these.
All of them I got just over a week ago, and I have vented in the forums regarding the size limitations with the internal storage, and not being able to route or install new apps to the SD cards. I really do think this was stupid on the part of the manufacturer to put such a limitation in the devices.
However" even though I vent a little bit, I also have perseverance that most do not. Give up really isn't built into my fabric. With that said I like these systems a lot, and I will go through some hoops to get them to where I want them.
So far I'm very happy with these, and my son absolutely loves his. A little too much in fact, at the point where he is on a break from the tablet for the next week or so until all his MCAS and finals are done for the year, hehe.
I think most people like these that have them - people just get frustrated when they have to deal with some of the standard Android issues like Rooting, and storage.
Performance wise the TF300T is a excellent little piece of equipment.
If Asus made them come with Root right off the bat, and removed the storage limitation issue with the SD card so you didn't have to implement a work around for it. I would push for my company to get these.
Currently my company hands out the iPads and Motorola Zooms to every one so we can develop apps for both markets.
I feel the Asus is a far better product aside from the Root and SD card issue.
The SD card issue is a deal breaker on the company wide side of things though.
All and all, I like mine
nordis,
I love my tf300. No issues at all.

I'm rooted, updated, and re-reooted. Thanks for the heads up!
Eveything still running great... I did find a .25" stratch on the screen once there was a completely white background it exposed itself to me. Its not too bothersome but my OCD claws at the back of my mind about it.

You've got two options:
1) enjoy it for what it is
2) return it
I'll probably hang on to mine. Fact is, for all the QC issues that have arisen with this tablet, there's nothing else like it in the market today.
Yeah, if there were four or five other Tegra 3 tablet/netbook hybrid devices out there I might take mine back for the speaker issue and the display issue that's reared its head a couple of times since I've had it. But there aren't. And I'd rather enjoy this thing for the 98% of it that works the way it is supposed to than rant and rail and raise my blood pressure over the 2% that doesn't. You might not. And if you don't, then take it back. No sense in getting all worked up over a product that you can take back to the store for a refund.
I got mine today. Firmware updated and factory reset but seems slower now
