Android 4 for.tab? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

Figured I would try here....ive searched google and I cant get I answer...some say no...some say yes...some say mybe...
Android 4 is a deciding factorin what tablet I will buy next weekend..
I woot root my tablet so interested in offical one
Thanks

I don't understand what you're asking ???

I think you're asking if there's going to be an official ICS update, which there will be sometime in the first half of the year. Why you're on XDA and against rooting I have no idea but you can always return to stock if you ever need to return it or have it serviced. and try proofreading next time ...

Well you definitely didn't search google too hard, I found a source in a few seconds. So yeah, Samsung has stated that Galaxy Tab 10.1 will get their official version of ICS (supposedly in Q1 2012). http://androidadvices.com/samsung-confirms-ics-40-galaxy-s2-note-tab-101-tab-77/
I would seriously recommend you to look into rooting and booting up a custom ROM, they are usually WAY better then what Samsung offers us (if you're worried about stability and similar stuff, CyanogenMod has been around a long while and has had over 1 million(!) user installs to date. So it's definitely a good and stable ROM).

Root now or wait?

Hello everyone, I have read that Acer has said they would be updating the Iconia A500 to ICS in mid January. I am not sure how reliable this is, but my questions would be, should I root now, or wait for the OTA update for ICS from Acer. Any thoughts would be great!

Should you breath now? That's a loaded question, because, whether you root now, or wait till ICS, bottom line is that the bootloader will be changed.
If you believe 1 site that says ICS will come next month, Then your face will be blue. Or maybe purple.
But hey, they could release a whole new ICS, and current methods will be crap. And when you decide to update to ICS, your root will be crap also. And 99% this will happen. Anybody remember 3.2???
Look, you can sit on your hindquarters, and wait. Or, you can root and recovery, And play around with the ASOP ICS roms. And get a little experience in doing things.
Or you can wait, and then say WTF???? when you take your OTA, and the bottom drops out of things.
Your choice. Come to the dark side....
Realistically, we probably won't see ICS on the Iconia until second quarter..I would take Moscow's advice. Get into the game now, learn a bit about the tab and ALL the features it has to offer, so when ICS drops you'll be truly ready.
Agreed, you might not see ICS at all. It breaks too many things pushing it OTA and because of support issues many MFG's are not going to make ICS available OTA. Now I know the marketing engines of each MFG are saying they'll have it, stay loyal to the brand, give me your money etc.
Bottom-line, ICS is a major OS change so look for MFG's to only make it available on NEW devices. Of course they may make a tool to load it at your own risk or someone else will make it. But I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for ICS from ACER on anything they've already sold you and got already paid for (no upside). Follow the money, which will be on new sales.
my 2¢

These guys have some good advice. Chances are the Devs will have ICS working before Acer does anyway, so you would need to be rooted to install that LOL
hummmmm. do you need root????
Thee are reasons why people root there tablet.
If you are OK with waiting even another day or two.
Ask yourself why root my tablet.don't do it just to hang out with the big kids.
Do it because you need something it brings.with that said im guessing you have no business or reason to root your device.
Good luck in what ever you decide what do I know im just a silly girl.
Thanks for the replies, I planned on Rooting, just wasn't sure if I would wait till the possible ICS update? But all the post make sense, so I will probably just root in the next day or two! Thanks

Sure it's possible... once either someone develops an AOSP ROM (like CM9), or Samsung releases an update to ICS. Neither of these things have happened yet though... You're certainly welcome to try cooking your own AOSP ROM though!
Samsung has announced that 7.7 will get ICS update later this year.
yes but we dont know when, chances are it wont be in a timely manner.

Do you have a link to that reference from Samsung? I'd like to read more about it and see if Rogers (Canada) might be included in that. Thank you.
This is the only listing I could find, nothing official.

If they are gonna unveil a few new tablets this MWC, Im guessing those tablets will get ICS first then after 3-5 months for the currently released device, else those new devices wont really sell much if the current ones get ICS first.

I wont be surprised if the ICS turn around table or update speed for the Tab7.7 wont be that good, this is after all a rare device.
Just my own theory, the Galaxy S3 might be the first one to official get ICS as it would be a major selling point then other devices follow..

Thinking ahead

Now that Samsung have released ICS for GS2, and Custom ROMs will now be ICS based (the majority, at least), this leads us to think... are these the last major OS updates Samsung will give our beloved GS2? Will we receive Jelly Bean, or, dare I say.. Key Lime Pie?
No is my guess. We may get a value pack!

I agree, after seeing the fate of the Galaxy S.
We get directly a new phone delivered by samsung ceo
Galaxy S got Eclair froyo and GINGERBREAD so 3 os version

I think there might be a possibility of jelly bean, I wouldn't rule it out just yet.

Yes, but not only gingerbread, it got 2.3.3, 2.3.4, 2.3.5, 2.3.6 and 2.3.6 with a value pack, i consider that quite a lot of updates
Cant believe there is already talk about a next version... I KNEW this would start after the official ICS update would arive. People go crazy for months about something (ICS in this case) and after a few days or a week of having it, start dreaming about the next thing...
The next Android version is not even shown yet. After google shows it, add another 6 months. Then maybe, it will come to our Galaxy S II's.
It really depens on WHAT the next version of Android will be like. Some things may determin if our phone's will officialy get it or not.

Just to add to that people forget that we have at current moment the best ****ing dual core android phone on the market. so if samsung does stop their support we are damn sure that we have the best devs around to still support our phone with whatever OS comes out in the coming year. Devs come and go but i have read a post by one of the most respectful devs around in these forums and he is staying put...so as long as we have him we have nothing to worry about..
Now as regarding new OS...Jelly Bean, Key Lime, Fruity Pebbles, Kung Pao Chicken or whatever you want to have *****es please....ICS has just arrived and not in full force yet and you lot talking about new OS...What in the freaking blue hell is wrong with you lot? lol enjoy the goodness of ICS and go away for your summer holidays, spring break or whatever and then think about the new OS when the time is right...Jesus
Some countries never got an official 2.3.6 update for the GSII.
Some carriers, like ZTA (Claro, Brazil) are way too damn stupid to allow for updates.

I hope that there will be still some development from Samsung, because the sources of them improve the developing of alternative Roms for the phones.
If i´m right we can see this by the ICS roms, for example missing kernal sources for video record and still waiting for other sources from samsung for developers.
But i worry about that this will not look like that. Maybe some value pack, like other mentioned.
Recording to the update policy i think maybe should choose a google phone next time ? :/

well people talking about development and saying that in the next year samsung will kinda fade away it's support for the s2 why are you people worrying. if you actually read you guys should know that the first galaxy s1...i mean i go onto the forums over there and they still have enough development still going on. the same goes for here.
yes there is a lot of hype around the galaxy s3 and i am pretty sure that alot of devs can not wait to get their hands on it. but i am still sure that alot of respectful devs will wait around till a phone and handset that is worth going for and that they know they will get support from google itself, to purchase one ie the next Nexus. the development and the manner they get the updates and sources for that handset is brilliant and amazing. so for me by the looks of it my s2 still has plenty of life and i hope i still be here helping people when jelly bean or fruity pebbles comes along..and then when the new nexus comes along i will be buying that to
There's not much to think about now. Seeing how fast mobile phones evolve, the SGS2 might not even have the appropriate hardware for a new OS. I'm thinking full HD and bigger screens, hovering over screen sensors, screen projection, using the phone as a desktop, 3D stuff...
I'm awaiting Ics, and if and when i'm tired of it, I am sure i'm tired of my phone as well and buy a new one. This is a phone for hardware enthusiasts, one and a half years is more than enough for me.

Yes its true that there is still a huge continuing development for SGS1 and there is atm a huge development for SGS2 and i also think that the development will also last very long. Especially because there is enough power in the SGS2 ( Hardware) to get along with further Updates.
So yes i worry that samsung will stop the developing for the phone maybe, but i also know that other DEvs will not

I think we will. The Exynos + 1gb RAM is way ahead of it's time.
The Google upgrade agreement with all manufacturers is that all phones that are hardware capable will get upgrades for the first eighteen months from date of first sale of the model .
SGS2 3rd may 2012 .
Jellybean before Dec 2012 i would not think so .

no way ,now new phones r online an wen a new model is out wiv jelly bean ,,,companies will force out an advertise tht phones so these old phones i don think ppl will remember...quad cores r already out

Ordered my TF300

HEY GUYS! I just placed my order on Amazon for my TF300 and I can't wait. It comes in Tuesday and until then I will be spending my time in the forums trying to find out what I want to do to it.
I am coming from the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0. It was a great tablet and the community was great. I was looking through this one and, to be honest, this forum looks a little confusing with the different versions for the different countries. The one I rodered is the TF300 B1-WH. I just wanna make sure that I can get what I need for this model from these forums.
So please stop by and tell me what you think and give some pointers. THANKS!

Take your time, do some reading and plan on a little time to verify there are no hardware issues before you go beyond stock. Most units selling today are on JB bootloader but if yours happens to come with ICS then consider nvflash.
Good Luck and Welcome!
Probably this is the best guide IMO - The best ROM is also BAKED - I'm currently on a test release which is amazing and BAKED just has all these AOKP customizations with the best stability and battery life of the AOSP Roms out there
also Ubuntu Touch is being ported but atm it's really, really a preview - not much working and not really stable!
thanks! I was so worried that since I was getting it off of Amazon that it was going to be some weird chinese version and almost useless. lol. I was able to find the 32GB refurb for 250. I am pretty stoked.
I was looking at the slim bean since that is what I run on my SIII but will wait for a slightly more stable version to come out. Any word on a paranoid ROM?
CleanROM is awesome. I definitely suggest giving it a try. We also have Paranoid Android. If you want to overclock you will want to use the 2.54 version with the modified Unter kernel in the 3rd post down from the OP under EXTRAS. There is a 2.99 version but its still a beta.
I ran the PA ROM for a few months and its nice. CleanROM performs better though.
I've got the 32gb version and love it. The dock is nice too if you ever decide to get one.

I to have cleanROM and it is simply awesome.
If i were you though i would give it a little while before you install custom ROMs just incase you have hardware issues and the tablet needs to go back for repair.
Then root the tablet and install a custom ROM. You won't regret it!

Tab Pro 10.1 update to Kitkat 4.4.4 and Lollipop

I have the Tab Pro 4 10.1, Tab 3 7" and the Nexus 7 2012. My Nexus 7 2012 had gone through all the updates to Lollipop but none of my Samsung devices have any updates for months while the Nexus 7 the oldest of all the three have all these updates that just keeps on coming. I'm getting frustrated with Samsung because until now my Samsung tablets are stuck at 4.4.2. If Samsung can release a new phone/tablet every 3 months with the latest OS then why can't they update the OS of the older ones at the same rate? Why do we ever bother reading the news about Android's latest Lollipop if we can't even get them on time? All I see is - it's coming, yeah right! What kind of software developers or engineers they have in there? Maybe they only have one guy working on it that's why it's taking so long or never at all. With all that money that they have, they can't even do this simple things. I guess that's why they couldn't beat Apple at their own game. Anyway, I'm out. Thanks for reading!

Just what do you see on Lollipop that makes you want it so bad.
I have purposely turned off OS updates on my N7 as don't want it. The device has not enough power to operate more and more memory intensive OS.
I let my N4 get updated and now regret it. Had no problems prior but now the battery drains overnight if left on standby. I used to let it go for several days before charging now I have to ensure it is plugged in and recharged nightly. This battery drain is being experienced by others. I don't want to have to do a complete factory reset and load everything again which is what some people recommend when doing these updates. Lollipop to me offers nothing that I want and it removed the ability to quickly close all apps which now must be done individually a pain. That plus the chance of other problems makes me want to leave my tab as is.
Google makes the Nexus line.
Google makes Android.
It's to be expected that a Nexus gets the Android updates first.
I'm under the impression the TabPros are getting Lollipop in Jan/Feb sometime with the rest of the year old devices, is that way out to lunch? If they aren't, I will be jumping to CM12 way sooner than later!

Whats so good about lollipop..... wellllll, on my phone after lollipop update I went from a 32k antutu to a 48k antutu, after lollipop im getting noticeably better performance in browsing and gaming, after lollipop im getting MUCH better battery life, after lollipop my phone runs like I want it to. As for being more memory intensive better look again. In its initial release lollipop had a memory leak, that was fixed so now it is easier on your device than kitkat. As for the close all in recent tasks which has been renamed...its still there. As always brand specific features will overwrite stock features though.
So in short why would someone want lollipop? It is simply better in almost every way. One of the few updates I have thought worthy of taking.

Dude, yes. This a hundred times. I was going to return this stupid tablet (10.1) because the TW ROM is so horrifically bad and sluggish. With CM12 it flies.
Yup, it'll either be out this year, next year, or the year after that. Trust me. Don't worry about it. Keep buying Samsung tablets, they're great.
I see a thread just like this one on every single device I've ever owned. A spoiled baby crying that they don't get updates right away. If you want updates so fast why would you get anything but Nexus? Go install CM12 & be happy.

lol seriously? 4.4.2 is just so out of date, it makes sense everyone is complaining.
not to mention, there's so many dumb bugs on the official GTP 8.4 firmware that it's pretty obvious this model is an "afterthought" for samsung
i actually don't expect ANY further updates for this model, it's pretty clear that when a company replaces a product with a newer product just 4 months after the product comes out (Tab S) they consider the first product a failure and don't care about it anymore

It is not that out of date cmon man. If/when 5.0 drops you will see a new thread dedicated to how bad it is on the tablet & asking how to go back to kitkat. If you want loli so bad why not play with cm12? If updates are such a priority to you why did you get this device? It has been like this for pretty much every non nexus device. Some get updates pretty quick, but most have to wait months.

in CM12 for tab pro 10.1 if you set an unlock pattern. does it appear on the first screen after pushing power button(like stock) or do you have to swipe for it to appear? (which means additional screen/step before unlock)

Are you really happy with that Lollipop on your Nexus 7 (2012)? I also own a Nexus 7 (2012) which became useless after Lollipop update.
Guys, go and visit the Nexus 7 sub-forum here and see how frustrated are those people after they got Lollipop.
I am really happy with my Samsung's (especially with 8.4), I wouldn't trade my milliseconds lag for a 30 seconds Lollipop lag and I will wait some good time when the update will become available.

hi bro, would you care to check something for me? I'm reluctant to flash cm12 until I know this.
in CM12 for tab pro 10.1 if you set an unlock pattern. does it appear on the first screen after pushing power button(like stock) or do you have to swipe for it to appear? (which means additional screen/step before unlock)
edit: oh well, nevermind..
