[Q] 8 megapixels image sensor datasheet - Hardware Hacking General

Hi every one,
I need help in a project i am doing.
I need to activate a camera module with an external controller.
The camera I want to operate is the rear cam of the Iphone 4s.
I searched a bit and found that it is Sony's camera and the name is IMX-145.
This was made by chipworks.
But I cant find any datasheet or some clues about this module or its structure.
Can you help me ?

I think what the meant was that the majority of the people here specialize in Android based devices/parts/etc.
It would be more prudent to go to an iPhone web forum to find the information you are seeking, maybe an iPhone modding scene or something like that

... The fact that the OP is asking for a hardware datasheet it boggles my mind how the above responders think that it has anything to do with what software is accessing said controller/sensor. They must be complete Derp's to think it matters if its android or ios, and negate the fact that what is being asked for has nothing to do with it.
To the OP:
If its a new revision of said sensor, then getting a new datasheet will be extremely hard to come by. You'd probably be able to find said datasheet for earlier revisions unless its protected as a proprietary piece of hardware of Chipworks.
I would guess that maybe something would be found buried in the chipworks website on the matter. Generally though for newer hardware or revisions of existing hardware, datasheets are not released to public until they've been replaced with newer models/revisions.
As it stands It looks like they can only be bought.

This forum (xda) just for ANDROID...

XDA is for Android, Windows Phone, Web OS, Meego, Bada, etc. And yes, there is even a link for iPhones on the main page.
Besides, Apple doesn't necessarily have an exclusivity deal on the camera sensors. The iPhone 4 used the same sensor that many HTC phones did, but the sensor itself can only do so much. The post processing and especially the optics are what makes or breaks a camera.

I'd find someone working for IT company and ask him to send request there - http://www.ovt.com/ and maybe to Toshiba asking for datasheet and samples of some sensor if you need only sensor. But, as xHausx said, you may need also camera-processor so you may want to look for ready sensor+processor fused modules. And these seems to me to have all very similiar interface (on ARM SoCs you can find camera handling modules - these are universal), though reversing ready device or getting datasheet for proper I2C/SPI communicating with such thing may be needed, which is rather model-specific.
iPhone from hardware level remains the very same device as all other Android devices and iPhone-developers doesn't have strictly hardware-modding forum as XDA does. So XDA is more appropriate place to ask for such things IMO.

Fixed... Here is the meat:
Some of our top engineers have investigated video performance on our devices and have discovered a fix that they claim will dramatically improve performance for common on-screen tasks like scrolling and the like. Their fix would help most of our recent touch-screen products including the Touch family of devices and TYTN II / Tilt, Mogul / XV6900. The update is in testing and we hope to release it soon. However this fix is not a new video driver to utilize hardware acceleration; it is a software optimization. Video drivers are a much more complicated issue that involves companies and engineers beyond HTC alone. We do not want to lead anyone to believe they should expect these. To explain why we are not releasing video acceleration instead of the optimization I offer you our official statement... "HTC DOES plan to offer software upgrades that will increase feature functionality, over the air wireless speeds and other enhancements for some of the phones being criticized, but we do not anticipate including any additional support for the video acceleration issues cited in customer complaints. I was at this conference. Take a look at what is inside the Mogul, Vogue, etc (aka Convergennce platform) chipset: (The second half talks about the graphics capabilities)

It is difficult to be angy at HTC, as just about every HW vendor does this: The retail channels and the manufacturers want product diversity, but Qualcomm can't design all that many chips (a full chip design is expenive), nor can they build a wide diversity of fab plants so they just disable parts or leave out drivers.
The question that no one can answer due to NDA's is who exactly is holding them back? I.e. it may be that Qualcomm didn't license the accelerator for this part from ATI or that HTC didn't license the rights to from Qualcomm.
Either way, a gdi/direct draw driver for the basics is not a massive undertaking. We aren't asking for DirectX 10 suport.

Here is the thing.... when I looked at what specs were available to me when I bought my Mogul, they looked better than my Wing. I expected better video performance than a 2 year old phone. What they said sounds like back peddling.
Sounds to me like all they are going to do is a quick software optimization which they will call a video fix, when in reality, it has nothing to do with the video hardware inside the device.
They are just releasing this and calling it a "video fix" to get all the people like us who want full functionality to shut the .... up about it.

that pdf is such a teaser so my phone is as powerful as ps2 and i cant use it thats just messed up and you know all the hardware their cause its integrated.This sucks cause i never play games cause they always play horrible. htc is so responsible for the iphone gui blowing away any other phones.

[DEV] Android on MT6236 project

I've been interested in starting a project like this since I read the specifications of the MT6236 chip, and now I'm starting this thread with hope that this will turn into a real project of running Android on MT6236-based phones.
For those of you that don't know MT6236 is one of the chips mostly implemented in chinese mobile phone knockoffs. However, the chips specification look like it could run Android.
It has a ARM9 @312MHz processor which is AFAIK the most generic thing I could write but it also sounds possible to run Android.

For full touch fones it is possible but guess noone is willing to be mad cause of different key layouts

ant+ support?

With the latest update of googles my tracks now ant+ support was added for external sensors, like footpods, heart rate monitors etc.
Anyone have an idea if the defy has the appropriate chip in it that will enable this in the future? Have read so far in a very early forum statement from motorola that this would not work but then again what customer support tells you is not always the whole truth Both the TI omap 3610 and 3630 does according to their product sheet indicate to support the needed wilink chip. Ericsson have just last week activated ant+ support in all their current android phones so it does seem possible to do things like this, if the manufacturer wants off course

I'm also looking for this, there are some indications that the chipset supports this hardware wise, below is a comment quoted from Jollo at the Motorola developer forum:
"Maybe you know about the first attempts to ANT+ sensor usage in android phones by HTC (ANT+ could be seen as de-facto standard for sports activities sensors like foot- or heart-pace). They used an ordinary Legend which was just flashed to enable the ANT+-capabilities of the TI WiLink radio chipset.
In case the Defy will use such chipset (specs don't name this, but even WiLink Gen. 6 should be adequate), this phone as one of the rare ruggedized ones running Android could become an outstanding sports-device. Suggestions for Custom Board/Phone for a Project

I am not sure how to ask this question yet i scribble a few words. Kindly ask questions if you are not clear. Thanks in advance.
We are doing a custom device for a industrial project. The project involves maintaining stock and functioning of electronic products using the USB API. The USB device(Our Product) and the android phone will be placed and provided to the end-user in an assembly. The end user sees the whole thing as a PDA/Device for use in industry.
I need suggestions for the following:
- The android Phone which we use must contain the following according to the Devs.
Android Version 2.2 or Higher.
Android Gingerbread 2.3 or higher is preferred.
- Touch Screen (Resistive or capacitive)
- Resolution 320 X 480 Pixels (Minimum)
- Screen-size 3 -4 Inches
- GPS or aGPS
- G-Sensor
- WiFi (any b/g/n or all)
- Internal Memory 512MB or higher
- RAM 384 MB or higher
- Processor 500 MHz or higher
- Battery 5 hrs or more usage time
- Partially assembled units with Display, Battery and Board.
- the outer case is not required (Optional)
- Bluetooth, GSM.. etc are necessarily required but if present can be used for any future projects.
Is there any board/ assembly unit or may be a mobile phone without the fancy housing or casing which we can buy for our project?
The BeagleBoard and AllGo boards already have android support but are on the expensive side.
Any help would be really appreciated.

As far as I can understand, you want something like DIY package for phone. I haven't heard about such thing, and even if it does exist - it's too expensive when compared to fully assembled phones. Basically what you described covers all functions of hi end PDA 3 years ago.
AFAIK you won't find resistive touchscreen phone with Android - it isn't really supported by AOSP.
I'd look for something like first Android HTCs, these were pretty good devices, aren't expensive now and meets your requirements I believe.
Unfortunately the cost to custom make something would be pretty high, and unless you are going to be selling these by the thousands, it will be cheaper to just buy a stock android phone.
The other problem is, Android devices have a specific set of requirements for both hardware and software before Google lets you put their os on it. (Not sure if that means they are "closed source" per-se, but I can't blame them for having minimum requirements, to at least keep up appearances.)
Have you considered using a Nexus S? It sounds like it would meet the requirements and could be modified if needed. Plus being a google dev phone android 2.3 was pretty much written for it.

You're thinking of the Google Apps, the OS is opensource and can be put on anything. You would just need their approval for the android market, gmail, g maps, etc.
If you're really serious about this, and it's really industry sized, I suggest you fork out a little more money and get the boards and whatnot.
Is the price in 125$ is high for devkit with ARM, I mean Beagleboard? You could view Freescale's devkit imx53qsb. The price is 149$ for board and 99$ for touchscreen. Freescale support Android 2.x (Gingerbread) BSP, Ubuntu 10 BSP, WinCE(if you pay) BSP.

The Samsung captivate has a 1ghz processor with 500 megs of ram. The device was sold for around $50 on contract. I've personally documented the heck out of it. All this boils down to a device which exceeds the specs you want. Has readily available parts, and is totally maintainable. I'd look at that device for a cheap platform. If you're looking for the development board you want the kit S5PC110... but I made that platform obsolete with UnBrickable Mod . I'd say reuse the available device boards and screens. Make a new case.

Right, on android-x86, we had to add tslib and hack framework/base to get resistive touchscreens to work.

+1 on this. Off the shelf hardware is probably best in this case
Since the hardware specs are so low, price is important and it looks like Android is more the OS than a necessary ecosystem you might look at some of the Chinese mfg's who are building droves of cheap android phones and tablets.
This wont be premier hardware but it should be cheap and meet your needs while allowing whatever quantity you think you'll need.

there have been several devices with resistive screens running android. They haven't been released from major OEM's and are fairly rare in the US but they are certainly supported. Unless you're shooting for a device that feels low end or just doesn't work all that well I'd recommend against them but they are an option.
Thank you... We finally settled for a 50$ phone.. It was cheap and has 3years service and replacement agreement with the manufacturer.. Without your suggestions I could have ordered those expensive development boards..

Main problem with this for the stated purpose in the OP is that the Nexus S doesn't exactly have very strong USB HOST functionality. (Although while it mentions USB, it isn't in the explicit requirements???)
I think for the use described in question, a tablet is likely to be a better bet.
Another option would be Samsung's Galaxy Player series - They are basically Galaxy S devices minus the phone functionality.
However you might want to look into a ruggedized Android device...

I want to source an Android smart watch from China for a project am working on. I want to change the menu interface it comes with and replace with a custom interface specific for my purpose (means no custom control to intended audience).
Thoughts Needed
Does anyone here have a similar experience?
Are they good at customizing ROMs and interfaces according to requirements?
If not, how easy is it to hire somebody to build a custom ROM with custom interface (for say MTK6572)?
Any recommended suppliers you know?

Please note: to date no Chinese Android watches are IP67, even the ones that provide proof of IP certification, I've learned that the hard way

The AK-S7 is or looks like ZGPAX S7
I'm sure you have experience dealing with Chinese sellers, but if you don't . .. . be extremely careful, even using Paypal, trust no one!

I have a chicken-egg question ... Which came first - AK-S5 or Z01? Which of these (or among numerous others on Alibaba) is "original" (designed first)? If there is no traceback and everyone is using the same reference design, as long as it works as intended, does it matter? I did get this supplier to show me the watch on skype video (though it doesn't prove anything).
My main question is - if the supplier really has a "fully working version" of S5 or Z01, and is ready to supply - they also say they will do ODM - any experience on their skills to make a custom ROM and change the menu interface to my needs? If not, anyone here willing to build the ROM and interface (paid)?

I started looking into smartwatches on XDA from Mar 2014, so my history before then is limited. For me it started with the Omate TrueSmart, their Kickstarter campaign that promised it all and delivered a lie. I could be wrong, but Omate made the watch first (x201) and the rest copied (or someShenzhen firm made it first and Omate copied ) @pizzaman77 - knows the full history of Omate clones x201. But yes, now it does not matter as long as it works.
As for the development, you might get lucky and find that someone is already doing what you want or similar on the Omate forum - search on the Android development threads. I'm not a dev, so I don't if the Chineses sellers have the skills, doubt it. But the Devs on XDA will have. Is it advisable to build on those platforms given that Android is now into wearables Reason I chose Android is because I want to be able to easily change supplier and/or watch hardware (looks) later easily and just port the code/functionality rather than getting locked. Else it will become an EXPENSIVE affair later. Am I right in thinking so?

Yes I'd stick with Android, lots of resources available, gives more flexibility. I don't think Nucleus OS is a viable option yet, it would be too expensive.
I take it SIM is a requirement too? I'll look around, the IP67 is not available yet, maybe the Ironman 3rd generation might be IP67, but the company (Unova) is full of liars, I was ripped off with the 2nd generation, I proved it's not IP67. Other then the IP67 the rest might be available, you'll need to search for it on AliExpress.

Yes, with 2G. 3G really not needed but if it comes with it, cool. Couldn't find any with android and heart rate on back side, keeping IP67 on the side.
Am currently in Boston (originally from India).

Looks like Android Wear needs a compatible Android phone for it to work.
So, I'll stick with just Android.
General rules with Chinese Android smartwatches
Broken firmware
Major security holes
Little to no official support (this includes the phone side app)
English (or any other language other than Chinese) for the phone app is very rare
Incomplete source code (when you can even get it) that is a generic build pulled from a phone
Inconsistent battery life due to broken firmware
IP67 is more like IP54 if lucky
Poor build quality and QC by western standards
Not Lokifish supported (I've walked away from the industry as a whole until they get their collective heads out of their butts)
kuronosan's time is limited so fixes may be slow
Depending on your needs and goals. Talk to Ingenic. The HW is a little slow on the Newton (SmartQ Z uses it), not sure about the Newton 2. Either way they have source (Linux, Android, etc). The package is small enough that you could design and build a smartwatch that's about the same size as a real watch, but the display will need a new "crystal" to pull it off nicely. Find a compatible round display, and you should be able to use off the shelf watch cases with minor modifications giving you a 200m diver's smartwatch if you do it right.
*Side note
Even with a 1/2 million buy in for 3000 units we designed ourselves, Umeox still would not have provided source code, and little to no support. That's what the Chinese ODM's are like. kuronosan can verify this.

I'm still working on stuff for the Omate. I just haven't actually had any free time as of late. I can't just take off of work to put work into a device that's difficult to troubleshoot. If I can be of any help let me know.
I've just started working with smartwatches, but I'm happy to help however I can. I'll be attempting some work on the s8, and I know my way around Android pretty well.
