Where will 4G LTE ICS come from? - Xoom General

I believe the current one is coming from google/motorola, but that's the wifi only model.
I have the 4G model, and afaik verizon would be releasing it, because it has their reputation/name on it
I also know this is a 'GED' device, so google supports it
so who would it be that would deliver ICS?
because if it's verizon, I don't think the 4G guys are getting it this month, but if it's google/motorola, I assume it can be within a week or so...

Chances are, it has to pass through Verizon for rigorous testing before being delivered OTA to thousands of users.

It will come from Google. Verizon will sign off on it, but it will come from Google. There seems to be a misconception around here that only the WiFi Xoom is a Google Experience Device (GED). Not true - the 3G/4G Xoom is as well. All updates have come from Google.

That's what I originally thought, as well, but, I was told only the wifi version is a GED earlier today. It was my understanding that all US versions of the Xoom were GED. If so, then maybe there's hope we'll see it sooner rather than later. After all, they have to do a soak test, right?

All US versions of the Xoom are GEDs. If they weren't, Moto would have been able to use a custom kernel to enable full SD card access, like they did with Xooms in other countries. I'm not sure where the misinformation came from that only the WiFi Xoom is a GED. That's not the case.

That is what I originally thought until I was told different. Thank you for confirming that!

So it won't be long before us 4g guys get it too. Unless Verizon had to test it out before signing off on it...

Let's hope so. Although I'm now running team EOS nightlies and have to say I may just stick with this. It's quite amazing. I'll install the official release once it's out there but I'm likely going to keep this.

No we're not. How quickly people forget that the VZW Xoom was first to receive the 3.1 update. VZW generally turns these GED updates around reasonably quickly.

I know. I'm just being highly sarcastic. Let's hope we see it in the next week or so. Of course, it'll likely get released while I'm traveling for work next week. Guess I'll throw the dev tools on my work laptop...."just in case". I really do hope we see the official update soon. Would like to compare it to the AOSP roms.

Apparently its not as easy as we thought ;-)

Really been holding out on that... There is no benefit in rooting my xoom right now besides eos ics.

For the longest time I kept my Xoom stock. For a small while I put the tiamat rom on. But I eventually went back to Stock. With ICS, the advantage over stock HC is pretty immense and I wanted to make sure that what ever ROM I installed with ICS was fully functional. This is the primary reason I went with EOS. Their ROM is virtually fully functional. It also has additional functions like others have mentioned (OC, use of SD card, etc.) Anyway, this is one of those times where I really feel that the ROM developers have come through in a big way. The biggest bug I have found in one of the nightlies was the dictionary issue but that has since been resolved.
The way I look at it is this, with my 4G Xoom I either need to have the best ROM available or be fully stock, none of this in-between stuff.

just in case no one said it who cares !

Ota 1.47.651.1 pulled

OTA 1.47.651.1 has been pulled as it is bricking some phones. Sprint has a internal notice floating around but I just figured that I should post this incase anyone was wondering.
Thank you for posting this. I was following the forums all day to see how the OTA was affecting rooted and non-rooted. It's ironic (and very unfortunate) that most stock users are getting bricked. Sprint not off to a good start with the EVO.
LOL much like the Hero.
I updated after monitoring, having only previously ran unrEVOked for wifi tether. Lucky for me, all is well.
Sprint is honestly not just off to a bad start with this phone, they're pretty much off to an awful start with it. Can't keep stock, can't replenish stock, bricked stock phones after OTA updates.
Not good problems to have.
I would bet it was a very small percentage that was having issues. From what I saw it was the fantom second update that was causing the problems. Anyway, some of the folks who know what to do with it, have it to take apart and use for the good of the rest of us.
Yippi!
-Roger
most non rooted getting bricked. prove it
I'm pretty glad I got mine. Helped my 4g strength somehow. I was dropping and switching back and forth (3g to 4g) and now I have full bars and drops to two bars every now and then. Also, phone works just as perfectly as before. I haven't rooted and won't until all of the kinks are worked out.

Not keeping stock is not really a bad thing for Sprint. They're just selling a ton of Evo's. And I don't think it's Sprint's fault for not getting new devices in (more likely HTC or the manufacturers) and the OTA is from HTC. Sprint would be fine if HTC could get their act together, although most of the problems are few and far between.
Is the update file available somewhere? It's still legit. I had the option to update today at work but signal was bad so I waited until I got home. By then the update got pulled and I no longer had the update option. I'd like to get the new update on my phone since I heard it improves battery life considerably.
My money is that the phone bricking was a result of non-patient users who didn't let the update finish and/or those who blindly hit "accept" without doing the slightest amount of reading (like checking the version number vs. what they already have on the phone).... ie. Those who ran the update twice.
No root, no problems. I updated when it first came out. Haven't noticed anything different.

Not being able to keep your product in stock because the demand is so high I would say is a pretty good problem to have.
It would be great if they posted a link for a download. Palm would always put their updates on they website for download. Can any body get it from their build who downloaded it?

Considering iPhone 4s are sold out for the next few weeks (lines outside local AT&T / Apple stores for the second round of preorders this morning)...
And I imagine the same will be true for Verizon when it drops the Droid X...
All the "hot" phones are pretty much currently sold out.

Verizon released Froyo for the Fascinate yesterday, but they just won't give it to you. Why? We're not sure. Maybe you didn't pay your bill on time, or maybe they're prejudiced against people with {insert your hair color here} hair. They can be pretty capricious that way.
The rest of us are rocking it, but nobody has posted here about it because we all like keeping secrets and making you angry.
Toodles!
Samsung charges providers with the update, verizon does not want to pay for it since its open source. Therefor we wont see it unless samung gives it for free or someone here can make it happen. my bet is on XDA not Verizon. Next phone will be motorola seems they are happy in bed with verizon and get all the updates and fixes.

New firmware to test

Just got an email from motorola and it seems they are beta testing a new firmware. It didnt say when it would be released or what was included but last time i got the email the firmware rolled out that day. Maybe this is the hsupa update were waiting for. Maybe motorola actually gets to finalize code before firmwares are released. It would make sense since all bloatware can be uninstalled so easily where as when i had my captivate att forced u to delete bloatware. Just an idea. In the end that would mean faster updates since were waiting on moto and not att.ive had this phone for 2 months and i have had as many updates as i got with the captivate which i had for 9 months

Well whoever gets this first make sure you post results. I hope the upgrade to gingerbread comes out as quickly. It sucks having a locked bootloader but at least there addressing some of the issues. Who knows maybe we will get an unlocked bootloader. But for now I'll be happy with the root privilege and gingerbread. Now motorola would be smart to release it since the only phones that offer gingerbread are the nexus phones

Don't hold your breath xD I guess this might be the HSUPA update.
Hopefully it is the real deal.
Only thing I'm wondering if this is just a HSUPA update, or if there's more included. Hopefully they don't break root again.
Just received my email as well, I was about to start a topic, but I guess I wasn't the first one to receive it
Personally, I think I will say no to beta testing, as I enjoy running GreyBlur/GingerBlur and having root access much more than running their bloated updates.
Of course, if this beta update gives some Gingerbread lovin', I may change my tune...after all, we've always got the older SBF's to fall back on!
I doubt that this will only be an HSUPA update. AT&T is also going to be enabling sideloading due to the Amazon problem. I sure hope it includes fixes for the Audio issues too.

As am I. I just wish they'd give out the release notes ASAP.
Because if this is HSUPA, I'll be glad.
If it were HSUPA + Gingerbread, I'd be ecstatic. Motoblur or not, considering the Blur that Droid X owners now have.
Recieved my e-mail, too. While i kinda doubt it'd be Gingerbread (although i wouldn't complain for a second if it were), i'm still kinda keeping my hopes up that if it IS the HSUPA update, and AT&T really DID want to test HSUPA on the 4G phones to see if their network could handle it prior to enabling it on everyone's phone... that they were the ones who kinda forced Moto's hand in keeping the bootloader locked. I know it's like wishing your Prius would turn into a Tesla.... but that's my feeling and i'm momentarily sticking to it.
are most of you guys going to sign up for it?

I signed up also.
Honestly, I highly doubt AT&T ever intended on giving us HSUPA. I think they were hoping they could just put us all off until HSPA+ was available in all areas and reserve HSUPA for Iphones. Not until we complained (like mad) did they even start to look at the issue. The press that we gave them made them give it to us also.

very regretful about my 10.1 purchase (SCH-I905)

god... I needed an LTE tablet... but this was the wrong one.
Verizon and Samsung... the 2 worst companies when wanting a software update for your device.
Anyone even gotten a straight answer from Samsung or Verizon that our SCH-I905 would be included in the July/August time frame for an ICS upgrade?
If I would have only bought the Xoom like I originally wanted.
Meh . . what can we do?
Paying termination fees to jump to Xoom now would just be a waste of money considering the fact that hardware wise it's not much of an upgrade if any.
The sad thing is there aren't any better android tablets on the horizon for release on any carrier networks with LTE built in. The latest iPad is going to have a lock on that market for the next year it seems, which is a shame.

It's not them, it's the carriers too.
Not sure if you caught Nilay Patel's editorial on the Verge a few weeks back but it certainly helped shed additional light on things we all already suspected for a long time.

Manufacturers just don't want to have to deal with the carriers for these things if they're not going to sell well. At this point I'm starting to consider myself lucky to even have a 10-inch android tablet with LTE built in.

well the biggest thing is the manufacturers need to modularize their devices, and have the carriers sell the modem portion. this would make 100% sense...
The SCH-i905 is going to be updated, (http://www.samsung.com/us/support/SupportOwnersFAQPopup.do?faq_id=FAQ00046726&fm_seq=49755) just not sure when. The HC 3.2 update took about 4 months longer for Verizon to roll out the update.
The support is minimal, but to be honest I still love this tab. Even with HC 3.2. I do a lot of travel, and it is so great to be able to grab e-mails, access dropbox, search for restaurants and check the maps, and access websites when in the middle of nowhere. There may come a time when the country is blanketed in wifi access points, but until then the LTE tab is great.
Hopefully ICS makes it even better, but I really don't have any issues with HC 3.2 at the moment.

The biggest issues I have are that..
a) VZW lied to me and told me their online documentation was wrong and the tab would ship to me with ICS..
b) My company has a few custom written apk's that only work on ICS apparently...
c) I hate the fact that they have taken so long to release the base update, but then we have to wait for verizon to get off their lazy ass and push it.
I will never buy another verizon product for myself. I am going to have to go to one of the ****ty GSM providers just to ensure I can get support like I need it from now on.

and i am not even complaining to the XDA community, more just complaining in general about Samsung. i really will never buy another Samsung device, or another Verizon device. Between the two you are just screwed if you need an update.

Then call them, write them emails, pr go stop by their houses with a basket of fruit and complain there. But please please please don't start any more threads that have no purpose or value to XDA besides complaining about your (frankly, very very small) issue.
BTW- Just get a portable hotspot and a wifi tab if you absolutely must have a GT10 with hacked firmware. Honestly, I don't understand why anyone would pay for internet for just a single device anyways; not to mention that the 3g/4g variants of most tablets are way less common than wifi-only versions (so they get a lot less development).
Exactly! You'd be most likely winner if you'd upgrade your data plan on your phone and use it as a WiFi HotSpot
Question... A few posts up I posted a link to JB for SCH I905... In the link the author post a screen shot from the "about device" screen. The device is a P7500 or something... But not SCH I905. Can
Jb or ICS be installed on SCH I905. Searching doesn't provide a clear answer and I don't want to use the trial and error method.

Why would Xoom be any better? Still a Verizon device.

What you're going to want to keep an eye on is the builds that pershoot is posting up on http://droidbasement.com/db-blog/ . You'll want the p4vzw variants. All the instructions should be there to read.
CM9 is ICS based, CM10 is JB based.
Just be sure you're on the right CWM version and you make adequate backups before you flash.

Not sure but I believe he's mentioning xoom because developers for that device managed to get the modem working in their ICS builds.

Any CM 10.2? AOKP? coming soon?

Hi i have the galaxy s4 from verizon but it's actually on ebay trying to sell it because i bought the LG G2 and it's arriving today but i see that there is really only 1 decent ROM out which is CleanRom. I was wondering when CM and AOKP will be coming so i can customize my navigation buttons too and a whole bunch of other features. I havent followed up on the unlocking/rooting but when was root/recovery achieved for this device?

The bootloader hasn't been unlocked yet and I spoke with someone close to AOKP last week on Reddit and he said that none of the maintainers will be getting G2's but since the Nexus 5 will be built off of the G2, that there may be some compatibility. So it'll be a while. The N5 isn't even out yet.
We also don't have kernel source yet which makes any CM or AOKP base kinda hard to get running.
Development for anything non-nexus or locked bootloader is going be slow. This phone is brand new, however this is a concern coming from a Nexus with all the latest updates. I will be patient and happy for now, but the flasher in me and the ability to have full control over my own device is a little......sobering.

This phone has LOKI, which means business as usual for custom ROMs and kernels.
Locked bootloader means nothing at this point, except bragging rights for saying they got it unlocked (if they unlock it, which I think will happen someday, but make no mistake this is not stopping development)

I am not a developer, so I am not familiar with the possibilities of LOKI, however I appreciate the information. Gives me hope. Thanks again!!

Is it really her daughters dog or does the hair dresser take care of it?

I'm planning on getting a G2 and Nexus 5 for Sprint as soon as I can swing both. Bringup will take some time but probably not as long as other devices, especially if we can get started based on CAF.

garwynn! Good to see you're planning to pick up a G2. I made the move from our beloved E4GT to the G2 myself, but also moved to AT&T. I finally had enough of Sprint's data network being so far behind.

Seems Sprint phones get a lot of dev support, maybe when it's released on Sprint it will pick up.
CM/AOSP bring up is already in progress. I don't foresee anything being particularly difficult to get a basic CM build up and going in pretty short order. I'll be getting the Verizon version later today but won't have time to really start helping until next week.

You have no idea how happy I am that you are on the case, especially with a Verizon G2. You did great work on the HP TouchPad, can't wait to see what you can do with the G2!
Isn't the nex5 basically the g2 but with a crappier camera?

Do you know the main PIC of that effort? Even if I have to hold off on getting it I'm more than willing to do whatever I can to help Sprint users. We always seem to need a little love on devices..

Hey! Nice to see you around! Reminds me, I really need to update my AC links.
I'm lucky being here in Chicago for Sprint, the G2 and Nexus 5 should be in prime shape to take advantage of Tri-band LTE. I'm not feeling the love from Samsung and I know I need the Nexus 5 for AOSP projects. Maybe I'll wait and see if someone sells a G2 over the holidays.

Very cool, thanks for the hard work.
This is good to hear, I've been eyeing the G2 but am reluctant to leave my S4 because of the Google edition ROM working so well. Will be watching to see what progress is made
