Glad to know it works better than your ex
And, BTW, it's named after my soon to born daughter
Well, I'm An old guy. Better check the names of my girlfriends
But with Navigation, especially from a car, I really can't help you much with the "drop-outs". Mainly I don't own a car. (I use metro). I'm not sure just how powerful the gps radio is in the Acer. It works fine for me in the streets, and it will drop for a couple seconds, but always acquires again. Usually within 10 meters.
I'll probably look into some different scripts in a couple weeks. See what I can come up with.

my very best wishes to your soon to be born daughter .... thx for the reply ... hope this can be fixed.... i need the navigation more than facebook

one question ....does your rom has agps support properly enabled? after reading a litle bit more i belive it is rom related.... thx

I have exactly the same problem.
I tryed the stock 3.0.1, the stock 3.1 as well as the taboonay and the thor ROM.
I have the same issue with Copilot Live and Google Navigator, It looks like they loose the fix.
I made some tests with GPS TEST, I can fix up to 4/5 sats indoor (more outodoor) with a signal strenth around 45 with no lost.
When I look at the satelite signal within Copilot, I can see that the power of the signal is just around the line in the middle (does that mean if the signal is too low, Copilot don't take it in account?)
So, all help is welcome, even for testing!
At least if some one can confirm that with a A501 and these apps/rom they d not have the issue, I can then suspect a hardware PB and ask for a replacement!

Taboonay vs Alexandra
Hi there,
I love the Taboonay rom; as you prefere the Alexandra one, can you give me/us are the main diference for you?

the biggest difference for me is the 3g module .... whit Alexandra I get a much better signal .... in my bedroom with taboonay I bearly get 3g signal ...but with Alexandra I get hsdpa+ ..... maybe it just me ....but I bealive the internet is a lot faster with alexandra..... but I will try all the roms until I find one in which the GPS works well .....for me the GPS navigation is the most important....

Like I said, I am looking into some better GPS Nav scripts. I am not "Garmin" and don't have a dedicated device.
And I have no car.
And I am an old fart, so I can only run at 52kph
But, if you find something that works, without 2 second interruption in GPS signal on occassion. Please, Send me a PM. I would appreciate it.

will this help?

So am i. My tab A500 can't use GPS

I've been having the same problem with my a501, I've tried all the fixes I have found on here to no avail. I would get a fix very quickly, but then lose it. After ripping out what hair I have left, it seemed to me that the GPS and cell tower locations were fighting for location (I'm using WAZE). I have disabled the network-provided time setting and the use wireless networks setting in location. It is now much better, not as good as my a100 with a wifi hotspot, but it was completely useless before.

Is there a version of the 6800 without the GPS?

I downloaded the new ROM and I can't get the GPS to work at all. I wonder if my unit even has the GPS. Is there a way to find out if it does. I know the model is a PPC6800SP. I wonder if the SP stands for something.
I believe all the 6800's have the same qualcomm chip. I had trouble the first time with google maps and gps, then I walked a couple of blocks away and it was able to lock on. Try taking the phone for a short ride and see if that works.

I'm sorry to let you down but I have a PPC 6800 and Yes it have GPS and yes you may download the las ROM from sprint but if you reed well there is no GPS ON right now the page say that for the 1Q of this year they "plan" to release a new ROM to "enable the GPS" the 1Q ends on march so we only have to wait...
To me friendly I don't personally I don't think they will enable the GPS because apparently the problem is no the GPS it is the antenna that in the original design was not design to be a ''Full GPS" it was design to be an "emergency GPS" and that is a big difference from a GPS to let the 911 know were you are between to antennas... and other thing is from you to get signal from a GPS satellite they are trying to get a "non real gps to work as a real gps" via software...
At least that is what I know about it I'm still waiting for the update... too...
For you to be happy yes we have a GPS antenna no full antenna but hey it is an antenna, we have the gps windows drivers for gps inside our phone, we have the com 9 open and sending info to the gps antenna, and we have a chip capable of prepossessing all the gps technology...

Im gonna agree with UltimatePG, try it again. Make sure you are outside and can see the sky clearly (shouldnt matter but sometimes it does). also might wanna try a different app to connect. try google maps or try wififofum. my gps works on com4, might be the same or different for you, im not sure.
I would say try the Sprint Navigation App, since it is the only one that has worked for me the first time and every time. Stand outside, not near a window, not in your basement, outside.
Then wait, let it get sats, it might take a few minutes the first time but it will work.
Good luck!

This is so last year....
It turns out, after all the people talked down to people who suggested that the mogul; had full gps, after all the snide comments and flames to people who suggested that it really had it,based on the chip specs, and after all the people who told others to "STFU,the mogul "ONLY" has AGPS and will never get "REAL" gps, that the test rom that was released does in fact enable full gps functionality (as well as the coveted EVDO rev A) that so many people wanted. I am typing this, connected to the internet over a rev A connection. I tried out tom-tom navigator sunday when I drove to see my GF. Its real, its here, and it rocks.

it has GPS in it. I ended doing a search for "gpsinfo.exe download" (no quotes) on google and found a small app that displays your satelite info. Some people have reported that it can take up to 45 minutes for the phone to get a good connection. Mine took about 20 minutes before it found any satelites, now it finds them very fast. The first time takes awhile. So grab a cup of coffee and fire up either google maps or gpsinfo and stank outside for a bit.

Yes I try the new rom and iGuidance works find but google earth no and other programs seems not to work right and the ROM have many stability problems I hope when they release the final version will be more stable....
Sorry for miss informing.... but I still think people can start working in a more intelligent way like for example the ATI drivers.... and many other thing companies do not take the time to make them work find from the first time...
Why if you have a Phone capable of GPS why you just no enable it before marketing, why if we can have ATI acceleration we don't...
and let me tell you I have tested the GPS of the tilt and works much better than the mogul new ROM....

wow -- between you two messages you said two totally different things. First you said you don't have GPS and Sprint will never have it, then you say you are testing it and that you have even played with a tilt.
Strange -- I'm confused.
i read something a while back about someone who had disassembled a mogul and found it just had a dummy antenna where the gps antenna should be, i cant find a link now because google only shows all the new pages with info on the leaked update, but i suppose it could be possible there are some moguls out there with gps but no antenna
i too think its funny about all those snide people who said it only had agps. i hope they're going back to take a long look at their posts..ehheheh

I'm so sorry about all people confused... Well Yes I have tested the Pre-Release of the new upcoming ROM from Sprint.... I have a PPC 6800 (Mogul) I have tested the HTC Tilt that my friends own... The gps in the 6800 is working kind of slow in comparison to the gps of the tilt my gps is working in COM4: at 4800 bps
and the GPS in the tilt works on COM4: at 9600 bps the New rom for the 6800 have a lot of problems it have problems connecting to the internet... have stability problems, some times the Display do not turn on, some times tis freeze, some times you are in the middle of a call and you los the audio... and many other problems...
The slow speed of the GPS let me thinking about the antenna problem.... I have seen 2 different models of the Mogul I don't know if one of the other have no GPS or what...
But When I write my first post I did no see another post in wish is available the new ROM I only have the facts of the problems with the GPS and the antenna Now I'm running at
ROM 3.16.651.0
Radio version: 3.27.00
I strongly suggest for everyone to wait until Sprint release the Final version of the ROM like they say they will on March... if it happen...
Any one wish need some print screens I can e-mail them....
Thanks
Low Baud Rate
I wouldn't be too concerned with the low baud rate of the GPS.
GPS only needs to send a minimal amount of data...and 4800 bps is more than sufficient to handle the necessary data.
As far as the stability issues, the ROM being used is nowhere near a "final product". I would also attribute most of the problems to the ROM and not the GPS
As far as the lack of support for GPS from HTC, you need to remember between Sprint and HTC, there have been a lot of issues with supporting features that were built into the phone. Remember the 6600 EVDO issue?
Now, to the guy who cannot get GPS working.
Load google maps, does it say "acquiring satellites"?
It does? Good...
Now, place your phone on your car's dashboard.
Drive around for 20 minutes(hopefully away from tall buildings).
Now, pickup your phone and look at it. It should have your position.
GPS signals are VERY weak. In comparison to most other signals, the signal degradation is INSANE. However, it is much easier to keep a signal once you have acquired it. So, once you get that signal, it should be easy to keep locked
Also, after you have acquired satellites your GPS can do a much better job at 'guessing' what to look for. So when you turn it off and then turn it back on, it can guess at GPS satellite location(I am severely oversimplifying everything).
I have loaded two GPS roms. Each time, I had to drive the car around to get a signal(even after standing outside my home for 20 minutes). The car is more comfortable, easier to maneuver into an open area, and it should work within a few minutes.

GPS satellite detection

Hi, I've got TomTom Navigator 6 installed on my Trinity and it all works fine, except it takes about 5 minutes before it picks up any satellites when I run it - does anybody know if there's a fix to enable to gps chip to pick up satellites a bit quicker than this? Even when I'm outside and away from tall buildings it's the same. Any help or suggestions would be great.
Thanks
Works fine on my Trinity. I think I have the following : Trinity-Radio-ROM-1[1].41.00.11-by-ZakMcRofl, installed so maybe try putting this Radio ROM on. There maybe better Radio ROMs but this one works fine for me.
Less than a minute from a cold start and even works inside the house. It is faster at getting a fix than my Kaiser.
I have the official HTC ROM upgrade on my Trinity and like the OP it takes a wee while to get a fix. I am learninig to live with it.
in my rom i have a program called "QuickGPS"; every 3 days it downloads a file (few KB) that contains some data about satellite positions - this should accelerate FIXing process... in theory.
Try it!
An alternative could be having GPS "always on" with another program running minimized!
I have the exact the same problem using destinator! Well i just read somewhere that a prog called "gps gate" seems to make our job but i dont know yet.I have to find it and try it. Plus i dont want to have always gps on cause i need battery to speak...
as mentioned in a previous post, id check the radio version u have installed, and maybe update it mate....
different radio versions run differently with roms......its pot luck.
try the 1.46....or the 1.50 radio....they work well on mine...
Radio 1.38.00.11
Radio 1.41.00.11
Radio 1.46.00.11/30.11
Radio 1.50.08.11
I tried the Radio 1.50.08.11 and found that it indeed did pick up GPS 2x faster than my original Radio, issue was it has no 3G capability, it switched me to EDGE, so I went back.
Also HTC QuickGPS fails to download the updates for me....
You can try that :
http://rapidshare.com/files/25607303/SeaSGEE.exe
It's like QuickGPS ...
Just run it each time before using the GPS (don't wait the 3 days) ... It's works fine for me ...
try PDAMOBIZ ROM's
try PDAMOBIZ ROM's for me they can get a much faster fix than all the others
maybe due to some tweaks - not sure but costantly got a fix in <60sec. compared to 4/5 min. in the same location
................or you could try the new radio thats out as of today for the trinity......

Radio 1.50.08.11 works like a charm for me....full 3G and HSDPA so I am not sure what the problem is on your P3600i.
I have found that GPS Quick Position is useful (even if just for the Placebo effect). Time to first fix is not an issue for me....lots of people complain about it on the Trinity and compare it to the PNA GPS units...but really there has to be something of a compromise on a phone/GPS/PDA otherwise the thing would be a Laptop.

so I bought a htc hd2 using it to type this, however gps wont lock (and kb Really is bad lol) im on o2
any ideas..
Re gps won't find anything
Hi,
A couple of questions. What software are you using? (like Google Maps). You say you can't get a lock, are you able to access any satellite? Have you selected Google Maps Use GPS Option. Have you enabled QuickGPS (Start/Tools/QuickGPS). There is a setting there to let you download Satellite data using your PC connection during Activesync which might help you if you have data issues.
Now, silly question, are you indoors or outdoors when you are trying to get a fix?. Im not always able to get a satellite fix from my living room).
Regards.

sorry took so long to reply (keyboard really has issues ... or maybe i have the issues and just cant use it) so i came to pc to reply.
i was indoors at the time (trying to show my gf how great my phone is and shes with her iphone getting a gps location in seconds) so i was indoors , i have tried outside however and it dont seem to work, i had the same (and still do) with my xda ignito and just give up on it , but this is a new phone and i just want to be able to sit in my house and go oooh phone says im here haha.
i used quickgps however that has not helped
LOL, knowing that you couldn't get it working on your other phone might have helped in your original posting . Have you talked to O2?
gps does not care about the carrier...
BTW: What the iphone does (and your phone can do too) is the self positining using the google api. that works over the cellular network, using a table of positions where the antennas are lokated and not gps!
GPS indoors is not possible with a antenna like the HD2 or the Iphone has, aslong as you live in a "normal house" and not in some weird mobile home ect...
If it cant get a fix using google maps or tomtom outside of your house within 2minutes of not moving somewhere on the street, or the gps tuner did not even find one satellite, think of hard-resetting your phone and then try again.
if you sill can find anything your antenna might be broken so you need to return your phone to warrenty and get a new one, or yours fixed!

Intereseting, I've never actually seen a phone using nagigation software without data services from a carrier. I must live a really sheltered life. Good luck.
Usually, every GPS phone has trouble locking from inside houses, with the exception of when you are standing next to a window sometimes. My HD2 however locks in seconds when outside.
I would suggest running QuickGPS (or something along those lines) from Start->Tools, it updates the locations of the satellites so the GPS takes less to locate them when locking.
All the best,
shpatar.

what are you talking about? tomtom, garmin etc. never use the carrier to get a fixed gps position. thats why you call it gps, because it uses it and gps is not run by any phone carrier but by the us. forces... so you dont need any dataservice or even simcard to get your gps position with your gps-enabled phone...

Are you using igo8? I know i had to manually set the correct com port (COM4) within igo settings before it would work.
Also you can manually set it in google maps. Try setting it to COM4 baud rate of 4800
The carrier locating in my area is useless when i am inside my house. Says i am like a mile away in the middle of a field! lol.

As others have replied- the iPhone uses a different method of getting your position, as its GPS receiver is pretty poor (which is why TomTom needs its own GPS receiver in a dedicated cradle to work properly )
The HD2 has the best GPS receiver I've yet seen in a mobile device- no longer than 1 minute even from cold start in most cases- and I've used it in UK, Italy and Slovenia in the last 6 weeks. However, if you are indoors it will struggle.
Which software are you using to try and get a fix? Maybe it isn't initiating the GPS correctly.
The Ignito is also pretty good, so maybe you are in a 'dead' area? Have you tried in a different location?

i understand what you mean with regards to cell network etc and obviously that works fine .. however gps seems to not like me

[GUIDE] Improve GPS Performance for Tab

Hello everybody
I was use Orange Rom P1000JHKA1
http://www.multiupload.com/EQTIKM4IXV
Pass: ce4arab.com
I noted the GPS Performance is better than any other rom I use it
So I thought to get the gps file from orange rom and test it in other rom
The result was fantastic
you can test by Yourself
first you have to root your device
Turn off GPS
then by use rootexplorer Copy the Contents in file 1 to this track system/bin/gpsd.
after that copy the contents in file 2 to this track system/lib.
restart your device
Turn on GPS
and test it
All the files you need in this process can be found here:
http://www.multiupload.com/YFHGI69FSI
Pass: ce4arab.com
(I am sorry for my bad English)
Interesting.
Were there any changes in /system/etc/jupiter.xml as well?

tnx
Tested and working ok on Italy.
Welcome fix, even if the GPS was doing ok already.
wow this really works, noticed the following
*faster detection
* more sat aquired
thanx !
Which firmware are you using?
It crashes my tab (JMF) completely... (tried it twice, lol)
Dennis
Edit:
Nevermind, androzip only extracted 0 byte files lol
I noticed that the files are labeled for the Euro version of the tablet. Will this tweak work for CDMA versions? Has anyone tried it yet?
I guess I could be the first, but I have a question. Brand new to Android, is it possible to unroot in case I have to send back for repair down the road?
Seems alot better with navigon, im getting signal in doors and i didnt befor, im on roto jme v4
Thanks.
not being a **** but you are going to have to remove root explorer from that package. that is considered as warez and that's a big no no around here
Nice work. The improvement is unbelievable!
I know someone asked but has anyone tried this on a CDMA tab?

ok i got the same stats as above, Indian GSM tab and the fix seems to give better results -
1. sat acquisition is wayyyyy better...i can now get 8-10 sats out of 12 on an average, outside...all bars blue...sometimes hitting even 11 when out for a walk...wow!!
2. inside house, all gray i.e. no signal but still acquiring around 6-8 sat's
This is way better than what it was doing previously...am using MayMyIndia Mobile Maps for India...full navigation with voice version...good for India cities...
now only thing to check is how it fares on a drive...
Niiiiccceeeee!!!
After flashing roto JME v4 full, 1,2 GHz kernel and this gps fix, gps and speed are now amazing!
I get a fix after 5 seconds (cold reboot) with 7 satellites in use in my room! lol
This reminds me of my good ol' Milestone which was amazing (at least in this discipline)

Works great on my german tab running roto's jme.
I got 10/10 after 5 seconds outside. Before i got 4/9 after 1-5 minutes.
thanks a lot, worked very well in Brazil.
I've repacked the files without the root explorer warez & the other .APKs which you can get from the market.
You can get it from here:

EDIT: This update is fantastic! It took the GPS on my tablet from being absolutely hopeless (clear sky, could see 5 satellites but wouldn't lock for the best part of a minute) to being even better than my N1! (Saw 7 satellites and got a lock within about 5 seconds). Yay!

very very poor gps...

Hi,
Im on darky 9.3 and very happy with the rom but Ive massive gps issues...
It takes about 5min to fix, sometimes more, as soon as Im start to move (car, feet) the signal stops at the last point...
In copilot Im gettin only 6 sat and no one is about the half...
One you have a custom rom ask the developer search in his pages read the faqs .
Two millions of posts on here about GPS use search and try the fixes posted .

I recommend you try docs rom based on JP8 and the Q1 modem. My GPS is great now.
On some units, the precision of GPS is poor and often can't be fixed enough by software. Only 2 solutions:
- RMA for a new built unit
- make the hardware antena fix suggested in this forum (search here for the fix)
On bad units, despite all firmware/software hacks, precision is bad. It will be ok in rural areas but will jump streets in urban areas with high roads density.
Probably, the soldering on antenna varies from unit to unit on early models, explaining why for some it's ok and others not. Also, many live and try GPS in areas with lower roads density, giving them the impression of a good track despite a bad precision of the GPS. Also, tons of posts with only test of the fix speed. The fix speed was solved enough on some ROMs, but the precision will never be enough on high density urban areas
Well assuming that its not hardware I would try a different modem. I was on darkys rom and had a very bad GPS with the JQ1 modem but JVE works very well for me.
I suggest you try a couple different ones, you can get CWM flashable zip files from this nice person here: http://perka.zapto.org/
the galaxy s has always had poor gps but samsung will not fix it

The problem is that GPS is more complicated than that.. Just because it says "5-10 accuracy", how do you know that's true? You need tracks to work that stuff out.
Originally, there were a few people here who grabbed GPS status and pointed out their "GPS was perfect". But, after pressuring them for ages, they either admitted that their tracks were horrible (but found excuses), or disappeared. There was one guy though who I saw with a decent track, but I suspect he might have used a bluetooth GPS (I have never seen his results replicated)..
Test using tracks, preferably using a second GPS as reference (such as a fitness GPS). Number of satelites and claimed accuracy means very little, because satellites move around. How do you know if there were maybe a maximum of 11 the first time, and not 16 the second? Hence why you need a reference.. So you can compare the tracks accurately.
As you have said before .
Post was really only a reference .
My GPS does what i want tracks i return are good enough for my use as is location etc .
My tracks have been posted before in the GPS thread .
Next time i use tracks i might remember to post them . But you ignored the last ones i posted .

I played last night a little bit around with my gps because i had the same problem.
I found a code to get in the gps service menu *#*#3214789650#*#*.
I found the SUPL/CP Settings and there is the supl.google.com server, i remembered i had some gps problems on my Nokia E71 too, long time ago.
On my Nokia i fixed it easily with the supl.nokia.com server, and i changed from google to the nokia server and now i get the gps fix in a few seconds.
I tested it about 6 times, always deleted the gps cache, works for me.
Maybe you can test it and give a reply, you dont need to reboot your phone, it works immediately.

I didnt made a sense the fix is quite quick on both but as far as im moving the signal losts... On the google navigation im not able to navigat on copilot it works much much better but it still jumps around... And on copilot the screen seems to lag a bit:-(
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Ohh, i understand.
For me, the first Gingerbread modem (JVE) solved all my GPS problems. I even compared it with my Garmin Nuvi and they had same precision and speed/refresh rate, the only difference is that the Galaxy needed 2 or 3 min without data connection to lock satellites, while the Garmin only needed 30 secs. I can't complain
