I changed system partition size on my gt540 to 220mb to use ICS. But when I restore my backed-up ROM(CM7) it sticks on boot logo or restarts over and over.. changed my system partition back to 150mb still same problem and ICS still work . (system partition didn't change)so I cant change my partition anymore?!

what does wipe cache partition and cache dalvik do?

Do they actually delete any physical data?
Whats the differences between the two really?
Please advice
with friendly greet
The cache partition stores temp data and downloads from the market and htc hub. And the dalvik cache is created by the dalvik vm, its used so android can run apps with optimal bytecode. If you wipe the dalvik cache, the dalvik vm will rebuild it on boot

grrr ... first time i dont do a full backup before updating and im stuck on the boot animation .... not rebooting, just the animation going on and on and on ... waited 20 mins before taking the battery out. tried several times and managed to get into android but then SPB hung on a blank screen and i couldnt do anything !
battery out again and tried reflashing (again) - this time wiping the cache first ... 10 mins and still boot animation
anyone got any thoughts before i give up and revert to a month old backup ?
ignore - wrong thread ... ADMIN remove ?

[Q] About installing CM7 Nightly builds

Hey guys just a quick question about installing nightly builds on the nook. When Rom Manager asks whether to wipe data/cache and what not, if I select it, will it wipe the internal memory completely? leaving no user files behind? or will it only wipe the system files?
It will wipe everything and it will be a fresh install.

If you update, just wipe cache
It wipes the /data partition but doesn't wipe /sdcard /sd-ext or /met/emmc.

Note: wipe cache and wipe Dalvik cache are 2 different things.
+ wipe cache is a quick way to clean the current running ROM
+ wipe Dalvik is a completely clean.
After wipe Dalvik, next time it boots, it will take a lot longer time due to the device has to re-compile the whole thing before ROM start running and booting.
I think I need to drop a few lines about wipe cache/Dalvik.
As I posted above, I said it wiped clean.
Apparently, I am NOT 100% correct.
I just updated to nb198, wiped cache (formatting /cache) then wipe Dalvik cache.
After done updating ROM, booting up, I expected everything clean, completely fresh.
It's not the case, I went to Market and all old search history were still shown. Not only with Market but other apps too.
So
a. either wipe cache/Dalvik is NOT completely clean wipe or
b. it was completely clean but somehow, those old cache info, which stored somewhere I don't know, get automatically restored back.
Okay, I did a quick read of the FAQ for CWR, and came across these:
Wipe cache partition
Wipes the cache partition of the device to clear all the data accumulated there over use. This is often used before installing a new ROM, app, kernel or any similar mod via recovery.
Wipe Dalvik Cache
Allows you to wipe the cache for the Dalvik virtual machine (the custom-built Java virtual machine for Android). This is required before most ROM installations and at other occasions too, for fixing some problems.
So, I'm taking this guide on board and will wiping Cache AND Davlik. So that's two steps prior to installing a new CM7 nightly build.

You didn't happen to store them in uSD card? Or perhaps app data/cache are separate from system data/cache...
Will look into it further...

[Q] Change rom using TWRP recovery

Hi, I'm on PA 3.99 rom and I'd like to install Purity Rom, but it's required a full wipe. My recovery is TWRP, so for a full wipe I need to wipe cache, dalvink cache, system and factory, right? Internal and External card isn't necessary, right? Because It will erase the Purity zip in my memory and I won't be able to installed. If possible I'd like a clear response, so I'd finally understand what to do exactly with no more worries.

That's correct, cache, dalvik cache, data and system. Your external sd and internal sd should be untouched.

A factory reset in recovery wipes /cache and /data ... the dalvik cache resides on the data partition and is thusly wiped also.
You could wipe /system to be "thorough" ... but the Rom zip.should have a format /system line in the updater script.
I only ever do a factory reset between roms.
Thank you very much, it's what I wanted to hear! (Never understood if wipe factory was even wipe data ahah XD)

Oh ok!! Now I get it! Really appreciate everyone answer! (Sorry for my English, lately I haven't been using it very much!)

What's the difference between cache and app cache?

So, if I wipe cache in TWRP, the app cache as reported by the system remains. Just tonight I was able to wipe over 2GB of app cache within the system, something I thought I would have rid myself with the wipe cache function within recovery.

That is because you're wiping the device's /cache partition, while app-specific cache is stored on the /data partition. So, It needs manual cleaning from within the app settings.

(help) need WIPA DATA

Wipe Data, Cache, Dalvik Cache and format /System
is necessary ""after""
or before ???
or both times when WE port the new rom ? ?
or why we do it if we not do it what happened?
When you decide to install a new ROM, then you have to do those wipes,
Cache and Dalvik Cache are related to every APK in the ROM, when you start boot the ROM for the first time, Dalvik cache indexes all APKs and cache it's dex files into the Cache partition, that happens only once, and you can actually see this when Android tells you it's "Optimizing Apps x of x",
So, what happens if installed a new ROM without wiping Cache and Dalvik Cache?,
Dalvik cache won't index the new APKs from the new ROM, and you'll end up having a ROM full of FC msgs,
So, that's why you need to wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache when you install a new ROM, before the ROM or after that won't matter, but don't boot up a new ROM without wiping those partitions.
