Kindle fire or samsung tab - Kindle Fire General

Ok.....i had a samsung tab 10.1.....too big for me. Got the 8.9 samsung tab. Im still not completley sure its what i want. Basically I want to use it for reading books, games for my 3 year old and light internet and email. My phone does everything the tab does, so I really dont need a full tablet.
What do you guys uaes your kindle fire for?

For your intended uses the Kindle Fire will work great, actualy I prefer the OMAP 4430 to the Tegra 2. The Kindle Fire is not a cheap tablet, it is every bit as capable as any other Android Tablet (except the transformer prime) it merely lacks some extra features - 3G, Bluetooth, microSD, GPS. It does also lacks Google services and Market, unless you root and add that capability, If you don't have a need for that stuff then the Kindle Fire is a great choice.

Just to let you know it is easy to root. I used burrito root

Just surffing the internet.

Kindle fire. Dont like the over-satuated screen color of samsung's devices and the IPS screen of kindle fire is more natural.

Basically everything you listed.

I have a kindle fire and it does everything you want. however as much as i like it, still seems to be missing something. At CES, ASUS introduced the MeMO 370T which seems like the best of all worlds in terms of android tablets and supposedly priced @ $249.

I'd go for the Galaxy Tab Plus (7in).
I miss a lot bluetooth/sdcard
But today they announced that there'll be a new asus 7in tegra3 tablet for $250. So I'd wait for that.

FFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU... Now I've gotta get that, too?!?!? Meh $250 isn't too bad. Kinda wished I'd held out a few more months. Guess my CM7 Kindle Fire will have to do for now...

That Asus one looks droolicious, but don't bet on it for a couple of months.. At least that's what I've learned from experience. The most capable and best bang-for-your-buck tablet right now is the Kindle Fire (with the ICS ROM of course).
My niece loves playing games on it and the web browsing experience for me is awesome. Sounds like you want the same use out of it.

Absolutely.. I heard about that during CES & am getting this device the second it hits the virtual shelves. You can't beat that. And quazzie/5-core?? Srsly?!

I play a lot of 3D games on mine, read books, browse the web, listen to music, watch videos, and instant message.

Kindle Fire or other Device

Hey I have a kindle Fire with ICS 4 using Energy ROM.
The guys who are developing ROMs and Kernel do a great job.
But I am a little bit unhappy with mit Kindle Fire with ICS 4 it Crashes from time to time and just reboots, No HW UI Acceleration and I would like to attach my DSLR (digital Camera) to the device. But Host USB isn't supported.
Now I thought to sell the device may be to get another one which fits better to me. What do you guys think would it take a long time get a goot ICS 4 stable version for the kindle fire or should I sell it an buy another one?
I would like to have a tablet with ICS 4 in the price range 300 (Euro, Dollar)
If the Screen is bigger than 7" it is ok. And it should have the same speed like the kindle. May be anyone can give me a advice which tablet is good for me.
Or should I stay better with my Fire because there is only **** tablets for this price out there ?
But I need a working tablet and not a experimental hack tablet...
either purchase a huwei Media Pad or wait for the new Asus nexus tablet both are 7 zoll ones and very potent.
Anyway I like the fire but i want to own one of them above.
thx for the fast replay by the way what do you guys think about Archos 101 G9 for example ?
to big for me. I use my fire at the subway when I drive to work and back. If I left the train I can stick it to the back pocket of my jeans.
If I were in your shoes I'd probably return my Kindle to stock, sell it, and wait for the Nexus tablet to hit. It sounds like it's going to be a really nice device.

But now the Kindle have the best performance for 199$ in the future there will be of course better tablets.
I'm super excited about the ASUS Nexus Tablet.
I told my wife if it launches with what they're speculating it to, I'll give her my Kindle Fire and buy that. It (in rumor) sounds amazing.
Just be patient. You need hw acceleration go back to Cm7. There are only two devices in the country running ics natively and both are phones. So use a little mental discipline and stop checking for updates everyday.
You without me is like Harold Melvin without the Blue Notes...

Anyone else hesitant to order after rumors of Google $150/$200 Tablet?

I'm 90% of the way to ordering a Kindle Fire to root and unlock but after hearing of Google partnering with Asus to make a sub $200 tablet, I'm not sure anymore.
The big thing that gets me is the lack of SD Card for the Kindle Fire and the prominent lack of hardware acceleration on custom ROMs that are available right now.
Anyone else in this dilemma? Anyone who owns a Kindle Fire care to comment?
EDIT: Articles:

after seeing the non existent support for the problems with the original nexus 'Google phone", I would not buy any hardware product from them.
go with the fire.
Meh...there are enough people interested in the Fire for legitimate Kindle use (Prime, movies, reading, etc) that I'm confident I can sell it for the $150 I bought it for and then get whatever tablet I want at that point in time.
I just got a KF on Monday. Love it! I'm currently running CM7. Everything works. I tried CM9 which is really nice, but HW Acceleration is a deal breaker for me. I don't think it is too far off.

I dunno, unless someone was planning to root / flash an alternate ROM then I wouldn't suggest the Kindle Fire to anyone but my mom. Not sure what the draw is to Prime, or anything else, and the Amazon app store is sad as all hell.
If you wanted a device to read on, maybe browse the web and add a few apps, then I might say get the Kindle. Always the option to root and unlock, until, if ever, it gets locked down.
BUT, if you want an Android tablet, a cheap 7 inch, I'd say wait for the Nexus tab. The Nexus devices have continued to be some of the best option when it comes to phones, so in this case I'm not sure why it'd be any different.
Basically just depends on what you want out of it. IMO the Kindle Fire, stock, is one sad little piece. It really is. There is no way around it. I would say wait. But then again it is as cheap as it gets. I know I'll be copping that tab when it drops, keep my fire for maybe couch / throne duties.

Have you tried CM7/9 on the fire?
They would have to make a really good screen to convince me to buy one.
The screen on the kindle is really well for me, especially when watching videos/movies.
Well....... you did ask this in the fire forums so what do u think were gonna say . Get the fire for sure.. wait for kernel 3.0

Yeah running an ICS build right now. I really only used my Kindle for reading up until today ... was hungover and mad as hell at the state of my couch / bed device and rooted / flashed.
The only real positive I have taken from this experience is that I could get real use out of a tablet, something I questioned before. Maybe a little harsh to say it is a sad device, by it's pretty bad in its stock state.
For the Android enthusiast I say wait. There really is no reasonable draw for the Kindle fire.
Great replies everyone, thanks for the opinions.
For me I figured if it had an SD card slot, I could load up movies and watch them on the tablet.
Does it have enough processing power to watch 480p/720p/1080p videos?
Because that I think will be a big difference or the deal breaker between the KF and the google tablet for me.
Honestly, I find the KF to be just fine for what I do. I watch movies on Netflix. I browse the web. I read books. I just haven't found tablets to be as laptop-replacing as they've been marketed. I carry my Kindle in my inner jacket pocket, where it sits just fine on the go. I pull it out occasionally when I'm bored to read a book or play a game. Otherwise, it sits mostly at home, where I pick it up to watch movies or surf the internet. I haven't even replaced the stock ROM, just rooted it to get the Google suite and market. I don't mind the stock OS as some other around here have. And I don't see where hardware acceleration is necessary for any of the above tasks. $200 was well spent on this little thing.
One flaw I will admit though is the terrible screen. It's almost offensive to my retinas. While the colors are nice, it will reflect ANYTHING, which really cuts the viewing experience. You have to actively not focus on the reflection. In sunlight, the brightness needs to be insanely high to see plain text in a book. Even in a pitch black room, it'll reflect the light reflecting off the your face. If you need a mirror as well, this device kills two birds with one stone.
Otherwise, the Nexus tablet looks interesting. I'm a big fan of the Galaxy Nexus, so hopefully this will be on par. Only time will tell though
nxtfari
i have a KF and the wife and daughter use it mostly to play games and watch a movie or two. i use it to read, which is really what it was intended to do
but IF the google tablet comes out i will get one of those for me to tinker with
so if you have not gotten a KF yet then you need to figure out what you want to do with your tablet before you decide which one to get

New Kindle Fire Coming this Fall

Amazon's Kindle Fire tablet will get a new and larger version this fall, according to a new report. Reuters states via unnamed sources that the new version of the Kindle tablet will have an 8.9 inch screen, compared to the seven inch screen that's on the current Kindle Fire tablet. That will still make it smaller than the current iPad from Apple which has a 10 inch screen.
There's no other details on the new Kindle tablet, such as its processor, operating system or even if it will keep the Kindle Fire name. Amazon has yet to comment.
The same report claims that Amazon is working on a new version of its Kindle eReader device that will include a front light. That version is expected to be released sometime in July. Barnes and Noble recently launched a version of its Nook Simple Reader device with a front "Glowlight" that allows users to read eBooks in the dark. That product sells for $139.
One of the concerns for Amazon in adding such a front light feature is that the battery life of the device would likely be reduced. As far as pricing, a front light for the Kindle eReader would only generate a slight price hike for the device; in fact, the article claims that Amazon might not raise its price at all.
Barnes and Noble recently announced a partnership with Microsoft that might lead to the Nook business spinning off from the bookseller. There has been much speculation that a future version of the Nook tablet could run on a port of Windows 8.
I will buy one for sure !
Yea, I think I may have to upgrade to the new version as well.
I would have to hold it. I like that I can wrap one hand around the current Kindle Fire and carry/hold it like a phone. 8.9" is getting pretty big unless they just cut down on the bezel. That is one thing I disliked about my Tranformer Prime. I felt like I had a lot less secure hold on it and because of that didn't like using it on the train or at work. It always felt on the edge of falling out of my hand. With the fire I can hold the thing very securely.

I've had the similarly sized Galaxy 10.1 for a while, and for the most part I feel the same way as you do with the Prime. 10.1 is unwieldy in any packaging for single-handing like you would do with the Fire. But I've also used the Galaxy Tab 8.9, and it's much easier to hold.
I'm hoping that Amazon may even go to a 4:3 format like the iPad or Touchpad. IMO larger 16:10 screens are too long to scan a page without major head contortions when you hold them in portrait mode.
I may consider upgrading as well, depending on price, or getting one for my wife as she loves mine. However, I kind of like the size it's at now, so I will also have to see how it feels...
Depends on price, processor, and whether they start locking it down.
Probably not though, as I already own a Tab 10.1 and will likely get the Note 10.1
If it comes with anything better than the stock 2.3.4 junk, it will sell way faster. But it is not likely...

Personally, I just want to see what the galaxy tablet will look like. I hope it will have a microphone and bluetooth 4.0. A front-facing camera would be nice but I don't really need one.

Who got theirs?

Mine came in this morning. Been playing with it for a couple of hours now. The screen is OK, but not as good as my New iPad, but that is to be expected. I did have it crash on me after installing Netflix and signing into it. I do like the fact that it is already registered to your Amazon account out of the box. I only had to connect to WiFi. Turning off adds is done on amazon.com under manage Kindle, which I did. the interface is VERY sparse. I was able to grab cisco Anyconnect VPN, but haven't tested it yet with my MiFi (I'm already at work). The initial setup and download really drags the tablet almost to a halt. But after that it's back to normal speeds. All in all, I still want a custom ROM of JB on here. I have Skype installed but haven't call anyone yet. Also, the speakers ARE AWESOME. I work in IT and all the guys loved the sound coming from this puppy! Streamed Downton Abbey without hiccups or buffering. Quite nice. No buyers remorse yet.
Cool! Can you side load app and install a different launcher like you could with the last fire?

So, I'm an owner of an original fire, got it as a Christmas present from my wife last year. I sold it a few weeks ago planning on getting the N7, but waited for the amazon presser about the new line.
After watching the live blog and all that, figured I'd give the KF another shot, and if I didn't like it, I'd return it and get the N7. After playing with this new KF for the past few hours, it's awesome, so much better than the original, for what I use it for. I like the new email client, the screen is fantastic, it's snappy and feels very cohesive and not so much an interface stuck on top of an andriod OS, even though it is.
So far, I'm impressed.
Yeah I just got mine as well and played around with it for about 10 minutes. So far the screen is gorgeous and the software isn't as laggy as the preview models that were shown in the videos. And the default web browser search engine for me was already set to Google. I'll post up more impressions in a bit.
Don't forget to update to 7.1.5. The sound on this device is freaking awesome...
Got mine today too...initial experiences:
- Side-loaded OnLive 1.2 and it works flawlessly
- Side-loaded Zinio reader from the Zinio.com site, but it FC several times...not usable. Emailed Zinio support
- Really want Rdio somehow, but haven't found the APK. Amazon Store says its not compatible.
- Fully MP3 library totally accessible and interface nice
- Amazon Prime Video works wonderfully but the series interface isn't so great...would like an easier way to tell were I left off on my Sons of Anarchy catch-up.
- Hulu Plus works but playback is janky--just isn't smooth or integrated
- I personally find the overall interface skinned nicely, but clumsy to navigate....coming from Gingerbread, Jelly Bean and iOS.
Looking forward to lots of crazy hacks to really push the hardware on this puppy!

Interesting quote from a reviewer
This is a Wi-Fi-only device that Amazon has packed with dual antennas, support for MIMO and reception in both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands in an attempt to speed up the connection. Despite that, I found Web browsing to be noticeably slower than on the Nexus 7 -- so in my experience, at least, that hardware addition is for naught.
The device is missing some prominent hardware features that its competitors have, such as GPS. The Kindle Fire HD's processor is far from leading-edge: a 1.2Ghz dual-core OMAP 4460 Texas Instruments processor, compared to the more powerful quad-core Tegra 3 processor that powers the Nexus 7. After several hours of use, I found the tablet seemed to suffer occasional lags when opening apps and on occasion when using apps. Restarting the device solved the problem, but then the lags eventually reappeared.
The middling-level hardware isn't as surprising as you might expect, because the Kindle Fire HD hasn't really been designed to be an all-purpose tablet -- despite Amazon's claims to the contrary. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos summed up the purpose of the Kindle Fire HD succinctly during the product announcement when he said, "The Kindle Fire is a service."

Hehe, I may do that too. That's why somehow I have a Motorola Xoom, iPad 2, iPad 3, Kindle Original, Nook Touch, Galaxy Note, Motorola Razr Maxx, and Galaxy Nexus.
The Fire HD appealed to be because I wanted more or less a dedicated reading device that also does other stuff. The antiglare screen looks pretty good so far and that was a plus for me. Now, if I can only get it to run Zinio stable, then I'll have pretty much achieved my goal.
I can deal with the text layout of Business Week from Amazon on the Fire, but for my other two magazines--Outside and National Geographic--I really want the full color magazine experience since its so much about the photography. Zinio's resolution is just so much higher than the same magazine pages via the Amazon Kindle app. I think Zinio uses vector for the layout where it appears Amazon is rasterized.

16gb vs 8gb for $199, much better sound, apparently better screen, hdmi, possibly better build quality. and maybe a better camera.
versus gps and Tegra 3.(not sure if Tegra 3 is usefully better other than Tegra-only games).
I like them both but I really want the better sound and hdmi, and hacking would eliminate one of the main advantages of the Nexus 7 which is the larger app selection.
I got mine today. Too locked down for my tastes but a root in the near future will take care of that. I like that I can "borrow" books from Amazon and watch whatever prime videos that are in Amazon's catalog. Micro hdmi works great, screen looks fantastic, the speakers sound pretty good and I can fit the 7" in a cargo pocket. Overall, I think it's a good buy for $199.

Is it worth upgrading ?

I have the first kindle fire and I'm not yet convinced in getting the HD.. I use amazon a lot and rarely play games on the KF so getting a Nexus7 is out of the question , I mostly use it for reading and watching movies/ tv shows.
So to the people who received theirs, is there a very noticeable difference between the two ? and is it worth the upgrade ?
yes
for me it was worth upgrading even just for the much improved sound and wifi performance. it is a noticable difference. especially in movies and tv shows. the screen is also very very good. and the decent speed bump across the board is welcome.
Worth upgrade over old kindle not over other tablet

OmgitzFire,
What caught my eye was how you plan to use the Kindle Fire HD 7", your statement "mostly for reading
and watching movies." Guess what, this is what the Kindle Fire HD 7" excels in Reading Books and Movies.
If you wanted a "A 7" Tablet to be used in Android Development", then the answer would be NO, get a Nexus
7. The Kindle Fire HD 7" excels with Books and Movies, not the Nexus 7. We have about 40 tablets, so
we do side-by-side comparisons often. The Kindle Fire HD 7" has a wonderful screen. The colors are a
little warm and glare is almost non-existent. The sound, when it is turned up, well let's just say you can
easily hear it behind a closed door.............. DOWNSTAIRS! Yes, upgrade. You will not regret your purchase.
