[Q] Best Android (SD) ROM for use with GPS - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hi, I'm about to use Sports Tracker for running so I need a ROM (preferably SD ROM) where GPS works perfectly.
I prefer some SD build (I don't care if it lacks features or if its an older Android version) so I can keep using my NAND ROM with all functionality that I need for everyday use.
I have no problem to find ROMs where GPS 'should' work, but in the comments I find a lot of comments from people who still have problems with GPS (not getting a fix, hot reboots, ...).
If anyone uses their HD2 for running/walking/cycling... and the trackpoint info is good (so no sudden GPS signal drops or other glitches which can cause some funny top speeds) then please tell me what ROM you use.
Any other tips and tricks for having a great GPS reception on the HD2 are welcome. Thanks.

what's the most suitable WM6.1 ROM for me? ^ ^

hi guys, I bought a BA recently, & I found this forum, HEAVEN!!!
I:
-play a lot of mp3 through earphone, TCPMP is my only player
-run on 3600mAh battery, battery life is my life
-play video clip @ <500kbps occasionally
-share file with other devices & active sync through BT
-do simple phone operations like sms & calling only, not using BT headset or what
-want stability
or which rom has least problem (& what are they?) apart from being free from any problems related to the above?
thanks for any possible guidance
generally, our WM6.0 or 6.1 is designed for latest handheld with vga screen, higher speed, better hardware so each ROM has its own characteristics... you should do trial and error... practices make perfect bro...
cheers
evo
PS:dont worry of making mistakes.. all the information that you need is here.. happy upgrading
I'm pretty new to BA like you are. What I've learned so far is that you need to try each ROM yourself and see how your device responds to it. I'm guessing that these BAs are like any other piece of computer hardware. You can have 5 devices all exactly alike and get 8 different responses as to which works best.
Some units have problems with Wifi depending on which ROM you use. That's been my biggest issue is trying to find a ROM that'll let me use Wifi without too many headaches. I've had mine for like a month or so now and I'm still flipping ROMs to compare.
Swampy just came out with a new one which I need to try, and Sundream mentioned he'll have a new one soon too. Xplode said he would a while back, but I'm still waiting on that one as well.
Unfortunately there isn't a sticky with a list of ROMs that list each person and their latest ROM. That would be incredibly handy and help clean up the forums a bit I'd think.

How is the GPS ?

What do you think about the GPS, which app would you recommand ?
People report back that TomTom version 7.915 is working fine......
Can recommend you TomTom
There's also a Copilot trial already in ROM, which is the other main option.
gps is excellent - better (more sats) than my rhodium and far far faster to lock than my kaiser. best yet in my opinion,
Does anyone know if IGO8 works with the mini? I am seriously considering this device since I at the point of being able to renew my contract.
Would love to know if anyone knows. Thanks!!!
Hi,
I have started a third party program which uses the gps.
When I turn off this program, the gps-icon in the tray doesn't go away.
I assume the gps is still running, but I can't find any settings to turn it off. Only thing that seem to work, is truning the phone off and on..
Anybody got an idea?
Hi stefanthege
I had this too with a little GPS app I use.
As far as I can see there isn't anything you can do to turn the GPS off, although it is supposed to shut down automatically if nothing is calling the GPS hardware.
For me, I noticed the application wasn't shutting down correctly, and was still listed in the task manager. Check there that your application isn't still running in the background when you think you have closed it.
Cheers
ow.
Hi,
Yes, I checked the task manager, and turned off ALL programs.. the GPS-icon was still showing in the icon-tray..
I don't think it's a big problem, because I don't use the GPS all that often.. but a little annoying..
Garmin
I'm using Garmin Mobile XT, Version 5.00.20wp, and is working well.
My ROM is 1.36.410.1 PTG.
GPS works great!
I've tested a lot of PNA & PDA devices with GPS and I'm very very satisfied with the GPS function on HTC HD mini, it works absolutely great! Finds satelites very fast, faster than some PNAs even it uses A-GPS. This can be problem when you are in roaming zones, for that, I use application DATA CONTROLLER (you can find it here in some forum).
I use iGO8 navigation software, with costumized DATA.zip archive, it works fine and I like it very much. Also iGO Primo is great solution.
HTC HD mini has totally satisfied my needs!
Hi Piona,
I was working several years ago with devices + external GPS units and devices with GPS inside (Pda, Notebook, smartphones,..)
I was working with GPS units from several manufacturers, kinds and versions (BT, serial, CF, SD, cable...).
In fact, several months ago, I was talking to HTC to know what is the brand what they included (Sirf,...) because it is a very interesting data to know if it works fine or not, in advance.
They did not confirm me this question but they informed me very good and send me tech. information in order to warranty a good perfomances.
Later, when we checked a couple of terminals (HTC mini) here, I could see is the best GPS what I checked.
Of course there is people with more experience than me but I can confirm you I invested days and days to check this question during a lot of years and GPS units and it is the best one.
It is a real GPS working in COM4 (Nmea, 4800bps)(remember it if you need to configure any software) but, the most important for me is it is very stable.
In short: fast, strong signal (I can work inside my office) and very stable.
Upon my point of view, the GPS is a very good argument from this terminal.
Have a good day
The GPS signal acquisition of my HD Mini is poor in comparison to my previous HD2. It can take 3-4 minutes to get a valid fix whereas the HD2 took only a few seconds.
This may be software related as I think it was better when I bought it, but until we can get the tools to update the Radio ROM I can only think of doing a hard reset to see if it improves.
My HD Mini (bought from Clove) came with a free copy of NDrive on a Micro-SD card.
It works very well. I find the HD Mini usually locks onto the satellites quickly when outside and holds that lock for longer, where my previous Sony Sat-Nav lost signal in the same position, in the same vehicle far faster.
If I had a criticism of NDrive it would be that it will sometimes instruct me to 'keep left' when what is really meant is 'turn left'.
Having said that recalculation of the route is almost instantaneous, it includes safety camera alerts and warns if I exceed the given speed limit for the current road.
I'd certainly recommend it and would probably buy NDrive next time I needed to.
I've now upgraded my ROM though still no new Radio ROM, but since then it has been far better. Fixes in about 20 seconds now from warm start.
GPS works great on HTC HD Mini.
Garmin mobile XT works like a cream.
Miero Via GPS Black edition is another one.
@ people who have the gps icon not removing itself as a status icon...
I myself have this problem using third party GPS navigation software...
try using google maps app after... then close google maps app ... with me this shuts down gps also...
Best of luck..
Joey
Garmin here also, flawless
GPS of HD mini is one of the best, if not the best. It acquires satellite signals and lock on very quickly. Even inside my office room. Takes seconds to lock. It out-performs the dedicated GPS device i bought earlier and installed in my car. So, now, the removed that device, and use my HD mini as primary navigation device.
I use NaviComputer instead of the built-in Google Map.
NaviComputer is a great app. It allows offline maps to be downloaded and saved on the phone. No need for internet access when i go out and use the phone as GPS device. This is a big plus, because in some areas -- especially in places when you most need to find your way back, GPRS/mobile internet is so weak and mostly non-existent. So that makes the wonderful Google map practically useless for me.
I use TomTom and also GPSTuner.
with both programs I haven't any issue
ozi
also oziexplorer works very well. I noticed it continues logging when the display switches off. this is really good for battery life!

[q] [help] bt & gps freeze

In the last 3 months I've installed almost every android build, SD, RAM, NAND…
I think about 60 of them, sometimes even a few per day...
On the weekend when I'm at home everything works fine.
Problems start when I go into my car:
1. GPS application freeze, sometimes after 1 minute, sometimes after 10, I tried "waze", "telmap", "IGO" and google navigation (different versions) all the same, freeze… this is why I think it is a GPS issue and not a specific application issue.
I thought It might be a radio issue, so I tried it with different radios.
I always use the recommended WM & radio versions.
2. Phone application FREEZE only when I'm using BT connection in my car. When I'm at home/work everything works great.
I was wondering if anyone got the same issue? Or someone can help?
Currently I'm using the great NAND version from DFT:
[Dec 30][NAND][DFT]LEO "Stock Desire" NAND Android ROM
RADIO 2.15.50.14
help please
I am in the exact situation as you. Gps will lock up the phone. No matter which app uses it.
snap. searching just now but not finding any solutions so far
same here
hey you all,
I have the exact same problem here. I have tried every possible rom there is but with the same result every time.
also I have tried several navigationprograms like copilot, navigon, sygic and google navigation.
gps seems to work just fine under winmo 6,5
searched the web like crazy, but there are very few with the same problem.
I'm thinking about forgetting android, witch is really a hard decision.
is there anyone that know a solution?

[Q] (HELP PLEASE) Does Android Fully Work on the HTC HD2?? :P

Hi guys, I am really wanting and looking forward to get the HTC HD2 but first I really need to know if the Port of Android really works well or not.
So I was wondering (If your very kind enough to take your time to help me) for all you people out there who have the HTC HD2 running the OS Android if you could help me !
My Question is this:
~ Do the Following things FULLY work on your port of Android to the HTC HD2? ~
(List Below)
PS. Please also include your Android Build that you are using! (Therefore I can determine what Android Build is the Best for me!)
~ Phone & Texting ( also Vibrate,Ringer, Speakerphone)
~ Music Player (MP3) & Video Player (MP4, Basic Video formats) (also Loudspeaker, Headphone Jack)
~ Wifi (With Internet Browsing, E-mail, IM, Youtube etc.)
~ Bluetooth (ALSO I VERY CURIOUS TO KNOW IF THE IPOD TOUCH 4th GEN WILL CONNECT TO THE HTC HD2????)
~ 5MP Camera & Video Recorder (with LED Flash working)
~ GPS ( Google Maps, Basic GPS)
~ Most of the Standard Android Features (ex. Movable Wall Papers)
~ All Hardware Buttons (ex. Talk & End, Volume Rockers)
~ ALSO I am very curious if Skype VIDEO-CALLING will work with the 5MP Camera on the Back?? Can someone download the app on there HTC HD2 for me and see if it works??
~ ALSO I am very Curious if Tethering Works?
* Internet Sharing through USB or Bluetooth
* Wi-Fi Router
~ ALSO I am very Curious if Adobe FLASH works while Internet Browsing???
~ AlSO very Curious if the is an application for Microsoft Work and other Office Tools?? ( It would be very useful)
If Someone would very Kind to take time to test all these Features out on there HTC HD2 with Ported Android on it, I will forever owe you!!! I will be very Thankful since this is my very time I have done this!!
Thanks Again!
Anybody Help me>?
We've already told you on your other threads that Android works on the HD2.
The only thing in your list above that doesn't work is video Skype. 100% forget that with any phone that doesn't have a front facing camera.
I just hope you're spending as much time questioning the iPhone on other forums as you are the HD2 on these forums. If you're not then get the iPhone because you obviously have too many doubts about this phone.
Sent from my HD2 using XDA App

Right. I'll start off by stating that with so many builds out there this is a very difficult question to answer. Most people will say 'Get a build and try it out'and I agree. However, for what it's worth...
- Phone, texting et al - YES!!!
- Music and Video et al - YES!!!
- Wifi - Yes. Think it's only 802.11G but works a treat for me
- Bluetooth - not had any problems. Don't have iPod so can't test.
- Camera with flash works fine. Video camera works with flash. Don't use vid cam but did a 5 second test and playback from camera worked fine.
- I use GPS with google maps/navigation. Takes a while to lock on at first but I've never lost my lock, I can turn GPS off for 5-10 mins and it will reaquire a lock very quickly. Google maps and navigation is one of the best 'sat-navs' I've used.
- Haven't yet found an android 'feature' which doesn't work. I don't use moving wallpapers for battery conservation BUT they do work. HTC Sense works as does HTC Hub.
-All hardware buttons work for me. It would seem from threads I've read that the buttons wear out with extended use (I'm not going into the WinMo/Android button argument tho). I've had my HD2 for about 14months and I've been using android as a daily build for nearly half that, I've never had a hardware button problem (touch wood).
- I don't use skype and don't know anyone who does but the program does start and I could login with a free account. I couldn't however check the camera. Check the forums for people who use skype.
-PC doesn't have bluetooth so couldn't check sharing over bluetooth. I couldn't get sharing over USB to work HOWEVER this doesn't mean that it doesn't work. I have had builds in the past that have worked. At the time I was using ubuntu and it's easier to check than in windows (IMHO).
-WiFi router works. At time of writing this my mobile signal was patchy but it connected fine. (Windows 7) and reported an internet connection was available. If BT/USB doesn't work for whatever reason then at least this does
-Flash works fine. Unfortunatly, it means that flash popups also work. I don't use it very often as I don't browse flash sites on my mobile.
- Office tools do exist but they are paid for apps and as such I can't comment. There is a free office viewer available.
So, apart from internet sharing over BT or USB, everything else works for me. I'm using RAFDROID HD 1.0 - NAND VERSION (link below) on a UK 512mb HD2 with a 1Gb data.img on a 8Gb SD Card (Gives me just over 1Gb for apps and the remaining 6.5-7Gb for music, vids, pics so on so forth. The build is stable with the only hiccup being a slight lag due to the data.img being on SD card not NAND. If you go the NAND route then I would choose a build that allows you to use an external data.img or similar unless you get a TMOUS HD2 which have a 1Gb NAND (lucky devils )
It must be asked...? Why get an HD2 just for android now, when so many good devices with superior hardware (larger mem, AMOLED screens etc) are around. Not knocking the HD2, I love mine, but just curious.
Notable things that DON'T work at the moment is 720p recording. The devs are working on it though. But, as I said, I don't use it. I also can't get my HD2 to make a decent coffee...
Just want to reiterate that not everybody likes the same build. I've only been using this build for about a day so can't say that it is foolproof or 100% stable. If you are going to get an HD2 for android then be prepared to swap builds, flash ROMS and Radios, HSPL and MAGLDR where necessary. It's not really difficult but it can be time consuming,
I think that's about it, hope this helps

SWEET THANKS MAN!!! Oh and the reason I wanted to get the HTC HD2 is because I'm in Canada, and Rogers offers no good Android Phones, So this phone is the best.

Can you recommend me a SD-rom for my use? To use with Endomondo and zephyr hxm

Hi all
I am looking for a new android SD build for my HD2. I am using my HD2 as a GPS tracker for running/cycling (with endomondo and hxm heart rate device.) My needs for the ROM are:
-Good battery
-Good bluetooth pairing
-Fast and stable
I don't need sense, but I don't mind either. It is also fine if the ROM is in Norwegian.
Can anyone help me out?
I have tried :
American android (To much bettery drain, and problem with BT.)

I´m using my phone for similar reasons, but only for an hour running per session, with bt music and a gps tracker (my tracks from google).
That hour drains 25% of the battery, the rest lasts easily through the day.
You can see the build i´m running in my signature. This is however a NAND build and not an SD build.
BT pairing works just nice (with Jaybird SB1) and the tracking works very good, upon starting the app i wait a while for the gps fix to occur (about 30 seconds maybe), after that i start to record the track and put the phone in my pocket, doesn´t loose signal even once in that hour.
*Edit: And you can set up the language in Norsk bokmal (Norge), so that would be your language then?
