New Update 7.014.14 - Acer Iconia A500

Checked for updates today and received 2 back to back.
Acer_A500_7.014.01_COM_GEN1 (expected) and
Acer_A500_7.014.14_COM_GEN1 (unexpected)
During install i got a screen I have never seen before... it said "Configuring Tablet" "DO NOT POWER OFF" "DO NOT RESET"
I tried to get a picture of it but wouldn't you know it my camera is screwing up.

Here is a screen of it that I've taken with my HTC Desire

And I got the Acer_A500_7.014.15_COM_GEN1

Yep, that's the one. have you found a change log or anything saying what changed?

What was the size(s) of these new updates?

little over 7 meg, 7.35 I think.

I get this second update few minutes ago . I don't see any difference except this new info screen posted above. Maybe It's some sort of preparation for ITS ?!

Yep same here
Just got both
Mine however were .03 (1st update) and now .15 (2nd Update)
Based in New Zealand.
First update was just over 3 megs
the 2nd was just under 7.5 megs
the 2nd one gives you the new screen (maybe the first one loads the screen for the 2nd one to display)
---------- Post added at 07:04 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:00 AM ----------
Right my info now is
3.2.1 Android version
Kernel at 2.6.36.3+
Build at Acer_A500_7.014.15_com_gen1

just updated my tablet and mine say's 7.014.14

New market format looks nice, showing ver 3.4.4 , I like it better than before the update

I received the 7.014.01 early this morning and now, I received the new one 7.014.14 ts about 7,51 MB

Just had the update myself. Super quick for both! Browser did keep shutting down, but I think that it has stopped doing that now! New market, yes i guess it looks ok, but have had that for time on my phone. Here is what I have found out about the 3.2.1.update:
The Android 3.2.1 update was released on 20 September 2011, and included a number of amendments:
.Bug fixes and minor security, stability and Wi-Fi improvements
.Update to Android Market with automatic updates and easier-to-read Terms and Condition text
.Update to Google Books
.Improved Adobe Flash support in browser
.Improved Chinese handwriting prediction.
Really looking forward to the ICS update, yes I know many ppl on here have been saying it wont happen, but I feel lucky! If it dosent happen, then I will be getting the Transformer Prime, just because of the name and o yer the prossecer lol!

This looks like for it is for people outside the US since it is Gen1 and mine says Gen2 and I am still on .02

Hmm, so what is the difference between Gen1 and Gen2?

Well, the Android Central blog listed this update in december, but it only reaches my tablet yesterday. I think they release the updates by region

Google Goggles not found in market

Don't seem to be able to find Google Goggles in the market.
It's showing up in Androlib (http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-google-android-apps-unveil-xAxB.aspx)
and the official site says to search for it in the market (http://www.google.com/mobile/goggles/#landmark)
But search returns nothing for either 'Google Goggles' or 'pname:com.google.android.apps.unveil'
Is anyone else able to find it? Maybe it's blocked from Australia?
It requires Android 1.6+.
sadly we will have to wait
either ppl hack it to work with 1.5 or for the new update
Come on HTC!
Get that 2.0/2.1 rom out for our beloved hero and we can start using other >=1.6 apps. We dying to try it out!! Come on... give us an early xmas pressie!
ok, rant over.
it is quite annoying that we can't use gmaps with navigation, goggles and other apps since they all require 1.6.
There is of course the custom rom with the leaked 2.1 rom, but I don't like the idea ofa using a 'beta' rom on my main phone.
Tweet to HTC - twitter.com/htc to let them know you'd like an update soon. The current rumor is that we should have a stable 2.1 before Christmas. Eris will get one in the new year. Hopefully Paul (of MoDaCo ROM) will be able to package up a rooted goody before his Xmas!

yeah, I am in the same boat as you. Although these custom roms do a fab job with the developers working hard on it and I have been using custom roms for my old winmo devices, I somehow don't fancy doing putting a custom rom right now on the new hero that is working flawless for me (just got the >=1.6 problem).
I have been watching the tweets from htc, but was very disappointed about their last tweet only mentioned about eris getting an update. Fingers cross, it will happen and soon.

cant promise but ive have informed that it will be released on the 12th ...so lets see ....

Huawei released 2.3.3 for C8800 - Could work for U8800?

Hey as stated, I found this a guy brought up this @modaco threads thinking you guys here would want to see also would it be simple to modify this and thus giving us a proper 2.3 rom?
http://android.modaco.com/content/h...r-the-devs-huawei-c8800-gingerbread-firmware/
All credits goes to McSpoon.
here it states it has same hardware , but in small picture if you enlarge it you can see it says 256ram, also C8800 might indicate the mobile is for China's market only(?) that's why the Chinese rom only. Let's Hope it will be released soon
As far as I can see the only difference is that it's a CDMA phone so surely it can't be that hard to customise it for use on the X5?
Well it does look like the CDMA version of the U8800.
Considering the case of the ZTE Blade its possible that both models have the same amount of memory but half of it is software-disabled or something. Either way its a good starting point.
Fingers crossed
I doubt this is going to make it any easier to get a Gingerbread ROM fully functional for our phones, since it is running on the 7227 (Last Gen) processor with 256mb ram, no EMMC, the list goes on. Screenshots for the lolz:

OK, I found the "official" facebook page but you'll need to scroll down through "more" on their wall to find it, so I've copied the message flow below (I intend to add one of my own).
I rarely use facebook so does anyone know, if we all start adding our messages to that wall posting, will that cause it to rise to the top of their wall postings?
Should we "add as friend" the other people who say they own the X5 and have have already left messages so we can ask if they want to join us here at XDA?

Do you have somewhere to download the rom, or access to the phone or something? Some of the libs might be relevant to u8800 if for example the camera sensor is the same.

It will probably hit on a weekend to avoid their support getting inundated with initial update calls. A weekend gives people a chance to figure out the issues themselves and not bother support needlessly and if still a problem then they can phone on the Monday.
I believe that is the usual tactic. So maybe we will get it this weekend. You never know!
Good News!!
ASUS had real good jobs in these few updates.
They paid musch focus on Table this time.

besides the improvements to allow more sizes of tablets (smaller ones) the Android Developer site lists the following:
Compatibility zoom for fixed-sized apps
Android 3.2 introduces a new compatibility zoom mode that gives users a new way to view fixed-sized apps on larger devices. The new mode provides a pixel-scaled alternative to the standard UI stretching for apps that are not designed to run on larger screen sizes, such as on tablets. The new mode is accessible to users from a menu icon in the system bar, for apps that need compatibility support.
Media sync from SD card
On devices that support an SD card, users can now load media files directly from the SD card to apps that use them. A system facility makes the files accessible to apps from the system media store.
But that's just what comes with stock android 3.2. Asus no doubt will have added some fixes and improvements of their own (everyone hopes one such improvement will be Netflix compatibility).
bug fixes i hope

I think 3.2 will should fix the lack of fps in rotate 90 & 180. Motorola Xoom [3.1] , Galaxy tab 10.1 [3.1] have got this same low fps problem like TF. This is honeycomb problem.... and 3.2 on Xoom fixed it... I hope that update will fix some problem and UI will be smoothh I wanna netfix too Better battery life? Fix of SoD? Fix somme issuses with copy/paste when u using custom screen keyboard. Add pinch to zoom on touchpad ? -> we can use 2 fingers to scroll in menu or internet browser ...and why we can't pinch to zoom? Asus please add it
With 3.2 Nova Xoom version will be working on TF

I'm hoping it activates the size down function that turns the tablet into a 7" one for portability.
I just want the battery stats to be recorded and reported correctly. Would love to know what takes up battery life on standby...
Ever since the new update browser and Opera has been crashing a lot more. It's pretty annoying. Hopefully that gets fixed too but it may be a TF thing.

Well I will be darned it does have folders, props to you (and I hit the thanks button too). I hadn't done the ICS folders on my phone in forever and forgot to drag and drop shotcuts, not Widgets.
So other than the Acer ring I saw on the A200 at best buy I don't feel like anything is missing, and I really don't know why I would want to have that ring cluttering my clean home screen anyways.
My sig states what I am on: Acer A500 - Rooted Stock 4.0.3 - rooted to add USB 3G support, and VPN support
No drugs at the moment, atleast that i can remember.
I completely agree. The acer ring is just bloat quite frankly. It's a failed attempt to differentiate a OS that is just fine when stock.
I don't see why people even expected them to include the ring, it was new for the new tabs, and the early ICS leak we had didn't have it in it, its all marketing, release a new feature that is nothing but I candy. Don't get me wrong its cool, but its nothing super over the top.

"Couldn't" doesn't have a damn thing to do with it. Of course they COULD include it, if they wanted to. It's not there because they've made a BUSINESS DECISION to only make their Ring app available to their newer devices, from the A200 upwards.
After all, it makes little corporate sense to update your older stuff to the same feature set as your new stuff. Where would be the incentive to buy the new stuff?
they probably left it out, since our tablet didnt come with it to begin with, good props to them too, not forcing bloatware onto a product we have owned for close to a year
THere has been issues with the ring on the A200. It also wasn't a widely accepted thing, unfortunatly it decreases over all performance and memory availability and performance users simply don't use it. Folders are just easier.

THe A200 was released later, but it really isn't newer, just a price point economical version of the A500 with soem htigns removed. I guess the ring was meant to composate.

According to a leaked memo acquired by TechCrunch, Barnes & Nobel will be updating the Nook Simple Touch and Simple Touch with Glowlight with an email app, web browser and an updated store next month. The update will reportedly be sent over the air starting on June 1st and rolling out to all devices in the following weeks. The idea isn't too far fetched -- the Simple Touch is running a skinned version of Android. Nook owners not willing to wait for the official patch can always root the device of course, which comes with some peripheral advantages. Check out TechCrunch for a look the full memo.

Hi
This should prove to be quite interesting.....
...not sure on the implications it will have for those of us who have already modified our Nooks...?

I doubt it. The hardware is really old now and there are severe storage limitations.

Interesting; I wonder if they've got a newer kernel as well, or just tweeked there existing ancient one.

Very interesting, can't wait for the update!
Anyway I was hoping for the store, I would like to install apps without root, but I guess it's never going to happen!

I would doubt that we could get the Play store as someone noted that the new design of it does not work with our venerable Nooks.
Still it is a nice update, not sure if I would get it though as mine is rooted etc and thus it might prevent it from downloading.
This Nook is over a year old now (isn't it?)... There can't be that many tablet manufacturers still willing to perform hefty developments on hardware that old. So web browser and email client announcement will be just that. And no more... no kernel, no other android support. I guess the 'updated store' is their B&N book store, not any kind of android store.
(I omit other bug fixes and reading-centric improvements)
(and as someone who has rooted and set up their nook just nicely, I don't think I'll care about this update, unless it does anything useful for me).
It would be lovely have a official service to send and parse content to nooks, a kind of "Send to Nook" from web browsers and smart phones.

That's what I'm hoping. Even if it just lets you import epubs from email I'd be good with that, it'd allow things like News Beamer and the like to work, as well as adding new sideloaded books without plugging into a computer which is honestly the thing I miss most from the rooted version since I accidentally triggered a reset to stock
==EDIT== some way to import books without plugging in, ability to edit the screensaver banner (had it as an "if found, contact" statement), and a persistent 1 px battery bar at the bottom of the screen and they'd cover all the root features I personally usedwith any regularity
A web browser might mean the device will get official multi-touch support.
The increase from 1.2.1 to 1.5.0 would suggest a bunch of under the hood stuff.
