LOL!!!!!!!!!

Moto started contacting some device owners asking for their participation in a new Xoom-related project. There's a decent chance this project is actually an ICS betatest program.

I think they did the same thing with the Atix and/or Bionic. Anyone with experience in those devices know how long this beta testing goes for?

I gotta admit, I've missed that response!

News is the prime is getting ics ota Jan 12. How long does beta testing last and will we get our ota before Jan 12?

I dont think, that it will be before the 12. january...
Maybe mid february... ASUS is darn quick with updates

Hahahahaha and a double LOL @ this thread. As an early adopter Xoom owner (got it the day it came out), and this really goes for anybody who has owned a Xoom for longer than 6 months, I'm used to software and features (4G anybody?) being implemented by everybody but Motorola first. Hell, with Motorola's track record and commitment to customer satisfaction, you should expect your official ICS to be released about mid August.

But this is a GED.

I would imagine that the GED Xoom will get ICS before Motorola push it out to non-GED Xooms.
I would also imagine that GED Xoom will get ICS before TP...
Unless Moto are taking full responsibility for the GED Xoom the same as the non-GED xooms - I would have thought they would want the GED to get ICS ASAP really...
Moto can then take their time and make sure stuff works really well with the Moto update for non-GED xooms...

As we have seen Google using ICS xooms at live shows.
It must mean its pretty stable, who would risk a crash on a live show when they could have honeycomb on it ( slow but not much crashes apart from the browser)
So Google having a working ICS for the last few weeks and no sign of sharing it it worrying.
If Asus do get the first ICS tablet out in the market beating the only GED tablet available, what does that say for future of GED tablets? does Google care about the tablet market?
The only reason I want ICS is that there is a slight hope the browser will be stable. So many large websites just crash. Normal websites hang lucky to get more then a few tabs open.

I dont think that the 3G and 4G Xooms can really be considered GED's since VZW has to tinker with the software and are responsible for pushing it out
The WiFi Xoom is, in my opinion, the only GED
Wish I had the WiFi version instead of my non-activated 3G version

And yet the Verizon Xoom is actually running the latest version of Honeycomb (3.2.4) while the WiFi Xoom is stuck on 3.2.1. haha

The differences in the versions have to do with fixes and features that are specific to those devices, ergo, the 3G/4G's 3.2.4 isn't any better than the wifi's 3.2.1.

galaxy s gets gingerbread before atrix?

kinda sad that a phone thats been out for almost a year is getting gingerbread before the atrix. i think its ATT's fault. they seem to delay OS updates, at least they did for the captivate. both rogers and bell got froyo months before att. maybe ATT wants to make sure all the features it wants disabled are in working like wifi hotspot?
True. Im already regretting buying my Atrix, too late to return it though. But also Motorola was asking for beta testers to sign up to test 2.3.

Looks like this is for unbranded galaxy s phones though. In the US it takes longer cause the carriers are modding the OS to add all their useless bloatware crappola an it's usually the carrier that pushes the updates not the manufacturer. But hopefully with the update to enable hsupa we get a couple of extra goodies.

it makes sense that the phone that's been out for a year gets it first....
since google released the 2.3 source code, the company has been doing nothing but preparing an update most likely. motorola however, needed to iron out kinks in their initial 2.2 release before they can consider developing a 2.3 OS, and then allowing carriers to modify it to your liking.
obviously you didn't think about what has to be done to come up with a polished 2.3 update before it can be released as an official OTA update. you really can't fault motorola for this not being out yet. it takes a lot of time, testing, and effort to release a finished product.
Raybond, I agree with everything you said, but its hard to cut Motorola any slack for this when the phone should have come with 2.3 in the first place. On top of that they lock the bootloader so we cant get 2.3 working on our own either....

well, the problem is that they probably started dev for the atrix's OS before 2.3 was released, so it would have been even more work, and probably would have caused delays in their release of the phone if they had shipped it with 2.3
I know locked bootloader is a massive drag for 3rd party dev, but you really can't fault moto for any decisions they've made with this phone other than that.

not really, you are going to be paying a carrier either way just without a contract. the cost of the subsidy doesnt get added to your bill. either this or buy a phone for full price like in europe.

actually you're not skipping honeycomb....
honeycomb is a totally different series in Android OS, tablet-specific series to be precise (3.0)
So, gingerbread is 2.3, and ICS is 2.4. Also, rumour has it that ICS will have full dual-core support, so it would make logical sense for Moto to not waste any time with 2.3 and go straight for dev in 2.4

ice creme sandwich is a blend features of both gingerbread and honeycomb made specifically for phones. you will not be seeing honeycomb on an android phone backed by google. that one reason google is not releasing honeycomb source yet, they dont want to have honeycomb phones out there.

i believe that it has some modicum of support for dual core, but is not completely optimized for it as 2.4 will be.
that's just my understanding, if someone could provide a link to prove me wrong then i'd freely accept it.
Gingerbread as currently released for SGS has some glitches but guess what Samsung just released the source code! So we should be seeing fixes and tricked out kernels/ROMS/system apps very soon.

How do you think it would be advantageous for them to do it during LTE upgrade?
Remember, many people will choose not to send in their Xooms.
Also, there's an existing infrastructure in place to handle the updates by MEID, over the air.
I'm not saying it won't happen your way, I'm just not able to think of any compelling reason to change the usual update method.
My only reason I think this, is based on installing the LTE modem, flashing the software, configuring it and testing it to make sure it works. I could be wrong but that's my train of thought. Otherwise I'd assume we would be seeing the update already just like the before. Remember wifi deployed alongside 3g last time. I am just making an assumption so if my thought process is off please let me know

It's odd, because it has the same price as the other high end tablet and it was the most popular as i said i considered it a NEXUS tablet, and it will probably not be the second one to receive ICS either, that will be the asus transformer
It's crap because not only wa the xoom branded as a GED ...
... not only did the Android team happily blog that ICS compiles for Xoom right out the gate with no tweaks ...
... not only did team EOS get leaked Chinese drivers to make everything work ...
... Motorola _still_ couldn't be bothered to get the update out in time.
Seriously they lined themselves up to have almost zero work on this port ... and they still blew it.
i also bought the xoom thinking it would be treated differently as it was the first "google tab" i have yet to see any special favoritism towards this device.

test..................
What a shocker Motorola borked an update, I guess they are too busy putting out 3 new phones and tablets every week to be bothered to do updates if google doesn't fix them they are done
I paid more for this thing when other tablets were out just so I didn't have to wait for updates...... Guess I was wrong
For the record the "test" wifi users signed up for last week still has not been released
Or maybe they don't want to look like dicks because Google bought them. Maybe Google want everyone to see that Motorola isn't its bff..... or its just the same old Motorola doing what they do best...nothing. you know what will put a cherry on top? Locking the boot loader.
From the sound of things for the soak test Wifi users were signing up for, Google is in control of the update, which makes sense, since it is a GED after all. It may not be Motorola's choice/decision.

Asus has some coherence problems with information management. XDA has coherent whine.

From twitter this time: https://twitter.com/#!/ASUS/status/164522714994974721
Hopefully they have made up their mind this time. Someone start the two-week countdown
Asus seems to have a problem deciding on when to release the real release-date and for how long it should continue to release prank-dates. The real release of the real release-date for the real release of ICS may or may not be right around the courner.
In the meantime, we could replace most of the world's nuclear powerstations with the whine contained in this very XDA thread. The power of both should more or less even out.
Good times.

ok that's a very bad update rollout process.
for xoom wifi + 3g (mz601 i guess) in asia pacific & EU, the update is still in planning stage. That means it will come somewhere around in Q4????? tht really sucks :x
Why not just flash to US firmware and Check for updates. Then you will receive ICS via ota update. I got tired of waiting for motorola to get their proverbial Sh*t together. Best move I EVER made!!
But there's no 3g Verizon's update yet....or Wi-Fi also works?

The wifi on US version is already update. But for 3g user mostly all region have to wait longer before its officially released.
I really wonder why there is such a long wait for the 3G version? Is it not just one little driver for the 3G modem that is extra compared with the wifi only version? Why do they even treat them as seperate machines? Very strange in my eyes.
