Zune Freeze/Custom Roms - Surround General

Hey,
I've been waiting for a firmware update for the Surround that fixes the freezing issue with Zune. Since there has been no word on this I am looking into alternatives.
Has anyone installed any of the custom ROMS on their surround? Do they fix the freezing issue?
Also would you consider them to be of the stability/quality of the standard ROM? I'm not really interested in the extra features. I just want to be able to listen to music with the phone locking up.
Cheers!

What freezing issue? My phone has never frozen up while playing music. Can you provide more details:
-Playing music on your phone?
-Streaming music via Zune?
Have you tried a hard reset?

The issue is well documented here:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...en-songs/e862bde0-fd1f-471e-9822-5c7a44746390
HTC has released firmware updates for their other phones that fixed the issue. Unfortunately nothing for the Surround yet. I emailed them but their response was just that it was coming at some point.
I've only encountered the problem when using drm'd zune music. Using my own MP3s has never resulted in a freeze. The only current work-arounds are plug in the phone or keep it from locking.

Guess I will have to give it a try with some of my Zune DRM tracks.

Just called HTC at their support number (866) 449-8358 and was told that they have had no issues with this... I also asked what the latest build number for any non-att device but was told that he would not have that information. I might call back tomorrow to be persistent about this but idk. FYI after i did a lot of reading (before i saw this post) I found someone said that if they ran an app that runs under a locked screen they would not experience the crashing. He said he used marathon (a gps recording app). I downloaded the free version that comes with 15 days free. Battery life is less but music works.

I have a Telus-branded HTC Surround and I have the same Zune freezing issue. Running 7720 as Telus hasn't pushed any of the latest updates. For HTC to claim they have no issues is complete nonsense.
---------- Post added at 06:43 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:23 AM ----------
I take that back Telus has just announced it is pushing 8107 to the HTC Surround. I hope there is a corresponding firmware update to fix the music freezing issue.

Ok, so finally got to experience this bug. All is OK with non-DRM music, as well as streaming (DRM) tracks from Zune. Had to play some downloaded, DRM tracks to force the freeze to occur. Happened after the third song (I think). Screen had already gone to sleep after 3 minutes.
Tried plugging/unplugging to AC with no success. Only remedy was a long press of the power putton to soft reset. Don't have much downloaded, DRM music on my phone (still getting those 10 free Zune tracks every month), but this still sucks. Obviously an issue that HTC should be looking into. And I assume other post-Mango, different OEM devices have not experienced the same problem.

As far as I know this is only affecting HTC phones. They have developed firmware for their other phones but its been a very slow rollout. I emailed them but the only response I got was that they are working on it.
For now I have to keep my phone plugged into a power source when I listen to music.

Problems with Media

Here are some issues I've noticed with Media on my phone.
It happens completely at random.
Occasionally I will attempt to play a video file, or an MP3 file using the built-in software. The device will say "unable to play this file type". If I completely shut-down the phone, restart it, then I am able to play the files again. Like I said, happens completely at random, but I will usually have to reboot at least once every 3 or 4 days to resolve this issue.
Also, sometimes and also completely random, my ringtones will simply stop working. I still get a notification on the notification bar, and NoLed still gives me a notification, but no sound. Again, I have to reboot the phone to correct the issue.
Any ideas? Anyone else experience this?
My phone is the Bell 19000M on the latest factory Bell Froyo build with no root or lagfix or anything non-standard. I also noticed this behaviour on the last Froyo build (the one just before Christmas the bricked the phone).
TIA!

I've done this several times, each time I don't even restore a backup, rather I manually drag and drop necessary files back onto the device, and manually re-install applications as necessary. But I appreciate the reply.
I can confirm these issues on a i9000 european uk with jvk gingerbread.

Dammit, that's not good news!
This happens maybe once a week or even more infrequently. I had the media not playing twice in 6 weeks and going out of video, closing with task manager and then back in fixed it.
I had the ringtone bug last week and going in to sound and checking which sound was selected showed the circular icon was blue, sound played ok when I selected it again. On froyo, sometimes I could not select any ringtone that was my own, the blue icon would not work.
This happens very infrequently but it is annoying having missed calls with no ringtone played to alert.
I still have the wifi stopping working in perfect reception at times too.

When this happens on my phone, I had tried going into Task Manager to end all active applications, and clear Level1 and Leve2 memory, but it didn't seem to make a difference for me. Only rebooting the phone did.
I am also experiencing this issue.
I am running stock AT&T Captivate.
I have google music, double twist, and mypod installed as well.
Note: I also notice a problem when I unplug power or headphones it sometimes starts playing music.
Folks, I had the same problem with the media files (video and audio)...occasionally had to reboot to play anything on the phone....scoured the internet and found an obscure reference to the official Twitter application causing this issue (was buried deep inside a forum post). It didn't make much sense to me, but I had the application installed, so I decided to take a shot anyway. My media playback problems disappeared after uninstalling it. Haven't had to reboot my phone even once for this problem ever since. Thinking back, my issues started right about the time that I installed the application.
Anyway, I'm no expert so can't guarantee that the source of your problem is the same, but that is what was definitely causing my problem. I switched to a different third party twitter app, and all has been good ever since.
Edit: Forgot to mention that I am also with Bell Mobility and have an unmodified SGS with the latest firmware available to Bell customers

[04 OCT] [Q] HD2 headphones issue

Hi guys! I have an issue.
When I use my original earphones that came with my HD2 everything is perfect. The music plays and never gets interrupted, but as soon as I plug in ANY other headphones or earphones, and try to play some music, it starts skipping around, stopping, starting, pausing, cahnging songs etc.
The problem is that this happenes in EVERY single OS and ROM. That being WM 6.5, WP 7/7.5, Android etc. I spent about a 100$ on proper headphones (senheiser hd218) and I don't want to use the original headset JUST because of this issue. I don't know what to do. I searched throught the whole forum and found some people with similar issues to mine, but noone had given a proper answer.
Is disabling the headset controls possible in the new YukiXbmod WP 7.5 ROM, cause I know from previous expirience, that this helps (It was possible in Android)? And EVEN after freezing the stock music player and the headset commands in the player i'm using it tends to pause and play again every now and then (In Android, which was the ONLY one that kept the phone behaving for the most part).
I'm desperate. Please help me! Thanks in Advance!
surprising how often this comes up in conjuntion with senheiser phones. As you found there are a few threads like this, and (from memory) senheiser comes up in most of them. I have senheisers too, and they make the phone go crazy on winmo, but fine on android.
I really hope some one post here with a definitive answer cause you are right it is several threads that discuss this question but none have a definitive answer. I myself had this issue with my HD2 for a period of like one week. Any headphones I plugged in would cause the music player to go crazy. It would even turn the music player on as soon as I plugged headphones in. It would skip doings, lizard and restart the song, or just get stuck in a Vicks of playing like 3 to 4 seconds of the song and then pausing it for 3 to 4 seconds then play and pause, play and pause.
What I did to fix this was to run a Task 29 and re install cLK and then reinstall my ROM then restore just my data from a Nandroid backup. I did this three times in one week because the issue kept filming back. But after the third time it never returned. But I can not say that this is the definitive fix for this as I think I might have just gottin Lucky and it did not come back.
Now this thread looks like a good place to discuss this problem too. I had another problem with the music player in Android on my HD2. It would double every song I had in the list of songs in the music player. This would cause it to play songs twice before going to another song when I had shuffle on. I have also experienced this issue with my HTC Sensation. Now this is what I have found in my research of what causes this problem. Now when I say research I mean my own research with my device and things that I do with my device as I could find nothing anywhere about anyone else having this issue. So I literally came across the suspected reason for this by myself. What I noticed is if you just turned off USB mass storage on your device and unpmuged the USB cable without ejecting the device from the computer. ( You know when the computer says save to remove) This is when I would see the problem. Now a simple reboot would always fix this issue but it was a very annoying issue. I also totally reformated my 16 gig SD card nd have not seen the problem again on my Sensation.
Hope you get an asset to your question, and I hope this post might help others with the issue I mentioned.
It must be something hardware wise, and not software wise, just like I said. I am running WP7 Mango atm, and both my SD cards got locked up (silly me, should have studied up on this better) so I'm STUCK on WP7 and won't be able to test Android nor WM 6.5, as WP7 is the ONLY thing that can read my cards . But anyway, I have never heard about your issue. There are some bizzare things around the HD2 Headphones. It might just be a factory defect, which I HOPE is fixable, because I've had my HD2 in almost an year now and I doubt I will be able to return it. Do you think the problem might be caused because I have dropped my phone several times, where one of them was on asphalt while I was running to catch the Bus ( which was the wrong one )?

Like I said, Android keeps the phone behaved because some ROMS are unable to recognize the commands that the Headset gives. And if you disable those commands in the Music player you're using (say Power AMP) and Freeze or uninstall the Default Music player, you have pretty much solved your problem.... for the most part....

Oh I don't think it is hardware related cause if it was this forum would be flooded with threads on it because it would be more frequent. I believe it is software related, cause me running a Task 29 and re flashing my ROM did fix the issue for like you are having on my HD2.
Also I forgot to mention that with my other issue I reformated my SD card when I had the issue on my Sensation. I mean it is the 16 gig SD card that came with my HTC HD2. And I have not seen the issue anymore on my Sensation. I will add this to my last post.

That I can not say, and in that case your issue might be a hardware related issue. Sorry o hear the Task 29 is not the fix for you. I guess that just goes to show that the cause of the issue could be both.

Music Volume changing?

Hey guys,
Im running into this weird situation with my GN3, when listening to music through the google music player I get a massive volume drop when the track changes, or when i rewind the track or even just put it to a different part of the song.
heres a video taken with my wifes GN3
as you can see its a really drastic volume change. I've uninstalled it and reinstalled and tried shutdown and everything. My wifes GN3 doesnt do this.
this also happens when using headphones as well.
Basically is this a software issue or a hardware warranty claim that I should go to verizon for? This is a stock non rooted GN3
thanks for the help in advance!

So I went to Verizon to talk to them. Of course I get someone who doesn't know anything lol. Anyways she has me do a hard reset (lame) so I do. The problem goes away and I say ok. No problem if it comes back I'll be back.
everything was fine until this morning when I played with my music again.
The source of the problem is the equalizer. Hard reset puts the eq settings back to off. So this morning I turned on the equalizer and it did it again! I turned off the equalizer again and it worked normally again.
Needless to say this is weird. Can you are if this is the same with yours? I will go back to Verizon when I get a chance.

Music Volume changing? (replace the EQ program?)
I _think_ I was having the same type of issue. The EQ in Google Music is an interchangeable app, so I am trying a different one which so far doesn't seem to have volume issues, but it's early yet. Apologies if I am misunderstanding the problem but I recommend trying a different EQ app from the Play store. You can have several but only one can be active at a time and Google Music will use it (when you go to EQ in Google Music settings whatever EQ app you have active under Settings > Sound > Music Effects is what opens).
I'm having the same issue. I'll be listening to music with headphones on and when a new track streets the volume gets cranked super loud. Is an exchange in order?
hoping it is software

I eventually started having the same problem again with the new EQ app. I disabled EQ and it hasn't happened since. I plan to live without an EQ and wait for a fix, hoping it is software.

I had this exact experience. I've had other issues too, an issue where my Alarm app crashes every so often, and where my phone (when I set it down sometimes) will become unresponsive (screen off) and not let me restart it without a battery pull.
I went to Verizon on 11/26 and had a Factory Reset, thinking that perhaps the recent OTA update could be the culprit, a reasonable theory. After the Factory Reset, the Alarm issue has not happened again (encouraging) but the unresponsive screen issue has (not great). The Music issue I have is the exact same, where in the store naturally it worked, but I hadn't though to turn on the equalizer. I have tried other Play equalizers to the same result.
I have since went back in (yesterday) to have them send me a Manufacturer's Refurb (I haven't Rooted yet), and will receive that on Wednesday (hopefully, if FedEx isn't lame). This will allow me to verify if it is hardware (or if i'm just unlucky and get 2 hardware issue units).
That said, i'll offer this: Today I tried uninstalling many apps I installed, just to try to rule out stuff, no luck. I tried then clearing the Data / Cache for Google Music, and then 'reverting' to the Factory installed version. The issue was gone (and the stock equalizer was on). I have since updated again to the current version, and the issue is still gone. I am wondering if there is a time component to it, and will keep checking.
I do have a separate thread going with all of my observations (i'd link but i'm not a real boy yet), called 'Note 3 - Alarm / Music Issues?' or something, feel free to add your thoughts if you want, and i'll keep an eye on this thread too for info. I want this fixed! (My Galaxy Nexus didn't have this issue...)
In for updates. Mine is doing the same thing.
I have the same exact problem. It happens when using headphones as well as streaming via bluetooth, so seems a software issue to me.
It hasn't happened to me in a while now (knock on wood). Only thing I can think of is keep all your apps up to date
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using xda app-developers app
Happens to me on Google Music. If I pause then restart the song it goes back. Since so many of us have the problem it might be something with 4.3.
Sent from my SM-N900V using xda app-developers app
I notice mine doing that randomly if I get a text or other types of notifications while listening to Pandora it cuts volume and most of the time it will fix itself with the next notification that chimes in, it goes back to normal volume
Sent from my SM-N900V using xda app-developers app
Unfortunately, as per the version at least, i've seen it present in the version that is stock/pre-loaded on the Note 3 as well as the most current / up to date version.
My refurb did not arrive yesterday but hopefully today, so i'll have a second unit to (ideally) confirm if it could be hardware or is more likely software. I feel I have seen similar reports of issues on the S4, so it is leaning towards a software / 4.3 issue, but i'm surprised that it's not more consistently occurring. (I have at least one coworker who cannot recreate the issue).
Any update on this?
Spotify does not have this problem... Has to be with the google play music app...

Google REFUSING to help with broken device

So, I'm at my wit's end. I've had multiple chats with highly belligerent Google staffers who, because they don't recognise an error, refuse to help. They also won't let me return my 6P and I'm pretty close to desperation.
Essentially, my 6P just won't play podcasts without the audio continually dropping out (it goes silent, but playback continues). To get audio back, I need to unplug / replug my headphones multiple times, pause / play multiple times / sometimes restart entirely. There's a subtle click whenever this happens. This occurs with podcasts downloaded via PocketCasts and DoggCatcher and books via Audible. It happens regardless of which player I use - even if I sideload the files into Google Play Music.
It doesn't seem to happen with music files but, come on, an mp3's an mp3. My suspicion is that it's happening with long files. Maybe I should try some opera.
Google essentially say that files like podcasts and sources like the BBC aren't supported. It's CRAZY for a flagship like this. They insist the phone is fine without taking a physical look at it. They flat-out refuse to let me exchange it.
So what the hell do I do? Podcasts are, by a large margin, the thing I spend most time using my phone for. Without that very basic functionality, the 6P is next to useless for me.
Do I have to take legal action?
Legal action? I bet your success rate would be close to 0% on that.
Factory reset or reflash the stock images.

I guess it may come to that?! I'm just dumbfounded by their response, which amounts to "you're using it wrong". It's not remotely what I've come to expect from Google and the overall tone is simply hostile and callous. I'm really shocked by it, to tell you the truth.

I troubleshoot software and hardware for a living. You've got to look at it from their perspective:
*no known issues other than yours (my guess - have to check bug tracker
*inability to replicate
*isolated issue
*not HW related
*not SW related (see bulletpoint one)
It's not that they DON'T want to help you, it's just based on the information provided and lack of other users having the same problem, they have nothing to resolve your issue with. Now if other users start reporting the same thing? Software issue that will get flagged on a bug tracker and possibly added as a bug fix in a future update.

Oh, god, I completely understand. But surely, in the interim, they should offer to RMA the device rather than simply saying: "Meh, your problem"? I mean, they're famous for being great to deal with - why this sudden lack of concern?
Inability to replicate surely means getting the questionable device in hand and testing. It's not enough to say that other devices work fine so mine should work fine too.

Which app are you using to play podcasts?
Have you tried another? I use Pocketcasts every day and have no problems whatsoever.
EDIT: Have you also tried a different pair of headphones? Not all headphones work well with the 6P.
Put this thing on reddit and hope for a ****storm.
It sounds to me like what you're experiencing is a compatibility issue, not a phone issue. I don't see how/why they'd replace a handset in that situation.

PocketCasts primarily (which is why I'm sure it's a fault with my hardware - because people like your good self are fine!), but also DoggCatcher. I've also sideloaded the files into Play Music and the problem persists. It also happens with Audible. And, yep, I've tried several pairs of headphones. SIGH.

Bingo! I see this every year with Nexus. Not to say it doesn't happen with other phones, but Nexus seems to attract more AR, paranoid users than any other. I'm not surprised they're trying to minimize exchanges in some cases.
If you haven't done an FDR, I would suggest that you do, and restore nothing. Install Pocketcasts and see if the issue persists.
Or.... Tell them there is a slight bulge over the volume rocker and they will exchange it. It's a "known issue" I was told by Google this very thing. And was told I could exchange if I wanted.
I had a similar thing happen on my @voice reader app and was able to correct it by setting the "between paragraph" delay to 0 ms from the standard 300 ms. Something about the way Marshmallow handled that slight break in audio focus caused it drop from bluetooth and speaker playback. I don't know if your podcast apps have the ability to speed up playback, but it might be worth a shot.
I had the same issue with pocketcasts. The only fix was a reboot. I haven't tried to listen to them on 6.0.1 yet. But I've only had that issue twice. Reboot helped.

Yeah, it's pretty constant for me. I'm trying yet another pod catcher to see if that helps. I'll report back if it does. But I'm SURE it's nothing to do with the apps. Like I say, even if I sideload the files into Google Play Music, the problem persists.
Anyone know whether a bulge at the bottom is RMA-able even after the 14 days (I was one of the meh-okay-nothing's-perfect people)? I guess I could say it's developed recently??
I have a similar issue listening to Tune In radio whether live, or a recorded show. I have chalked it up to my headphones cause they're pretty Sh!tty and on their last leg. Audio keeps counting down but no sound. Unplug, replug, hit play and I am on my way again.
Are you sure it is not the headphones, have you tried with a bluetooth speaker or headset?
It will work. The bulge thing. I have screen shots of the conversation with Google telling me it's nothing to worry about and if it got worse it would be covered and I would get a new device. Can't post pics yet, my account won't let me.
Yep, definitely not the headphones. I've tried three pairs now. Thanks, though!

This is really weird, I use doggcatcher, pocket casts, black player, and Poweramp and they all didn't have this issue. I listen to podcasts almost daily usually on pocket casts.
Is there one particular podcast I can try that you see there issue with our is it pretty much any one you try?,

Google Play Music Forwarding/Scrubbing Problem

Hey everyone,
I've been using Google Play Music for a while now (since my OnePlus 3) and I could never get it to forward/scrub in a song. Whether the song is downloaded or streaming I cannot pick a specific place in the song to play, always reverts back to the beginning. Did some researching and it seems this is happening to a lot of people using OnePlus Oxygen OS. I thought maybe the 5 wouldn't have this issue but its still persisting. Anyone else running into this and if so, did you find a fix? Thanks in advance.
I've never liked the G Music app for locally downloaded music, but yeah it's not the greatest written app. I can scrub a song but not well or smoothly. On my OP3 I never had major issues but on prior phones I always found it shoppy for scrubbing. Just my two cents, YMMV.
This was one of the issues I had on my OP5.
It's not there anymore though...becuase I returned my OP5.
I have it too, is annoying. I'm using Apple Music right now (just because is a family suscribtion and they pay the same with or without me lol) but i would like to use Play Music just because YouTube Red ):
I've requested a callback from Google regarding this. Hope they can provide a resolution.
I had same issue. On OxygenOS 4.5.5 seems to be fixed and I can skip forward with playback.

Someone mentioned clearing data, tried it to no result. Hoping support has a way to fix this. Also, does anyone know how to upgrade individual subscription to a family plan?
Yeah I tried clearing data and uninstalling the latest update but still no luck

This issues comes and goes for me. It seems to be linked to whether I have a network connection or not. Be it cellular or WiFi. If I have no network it just restarts the song each time, doesn't matter if it's on the device or cached.
And to answer a earlier question you can upgrade Via settings in Google Play Click the Burger in the top left and you should see an option to Upgrade to family plan in the list under the download only switch.
I've tried everything with this. I have the subscription, and it has all of my personal music uploaded to it (which has since been corrupted on my hard drive), so I'm locked in to the service now, plus it's a great streaming option w/ the family plan. It works fine on all my other devices. I've tried clearing the cache, all 5 versions of OOS 4.5, clean wiping, custom ROMs, disabling the cache completely. Nothing makes a difference. Talked to customer support (1+) and they said it's an issue with Google. Currently, Google is looking into the issue. Will update.
Update:
Currently working with Google, here's a video of the behavior in case anyone is interested: https://goo.gl/photos/Cw6ffB4y2eSAH4rv7
I know, it's unlocked, rooted, and themed. I promise I tried this after factory resets and clean installs of all of the OOS releases so far: 4.5.0, 4.5.1, 4.5.2, 4.5.3, 4.5.4, 4.5.5.
I have the same issue of not being able to pick a certain portion in the middle of a track to skip to. I also get fired to the beginning of the track. It also happens on podcasts in the app.
The other issue is when I use Chromecast with the app...my display lights up every couple minutes as if I got a notification even though I didn't. The temporary fix I found for that was to disable Google play music from showing notifications on the lockscreen

It wasn't the primary reason I returned mine though, even though I have Google Music subscription and use it a lot. I think I'll wait for the next Oneplus device.

It was the main reason I returned mine. The fact that it was a problem on the oneplus 3 and they supposedly fixed it then released the oneplus 5 with the same bug tells me something about this company. And they specifically told me to "never settle"
I had this exact problem but was happy enough to ignore it. It disappeared yesterday so I suspect the last update fixed it (which was also yesterday).

It works if the song is downloaded to the phone (I think). I updated yesterday as well and still have the issue.
Google engineers are currently looking into it; here's their statement:
"Thank you for sending the feedback.
I've passed your information along to our engineers and we will update you as soon as we have determined the next steps or have more details.
I may be in touch to request more information about this issue. I really appreciate your continued patience and cooperation as we work to resolve this situation.
If you have any other questions in the meantime, you can reply directly to this email."

You're absolutely right. Good to know it's being looked at and is just the player.
Has anyone upgraded to 4.5.10? There's mention of a GPlay Music scroll fix, not sure if it's related to this as 4.5.10 hasn't rolled out to my region yet.
