Wifi-only Motorola Xoom getting prepped for another 'project' - Xoom General

Hey, just read this on Android Central: an email has gone out to a few members of the Xoom section on the Motorola Owner's Forums talking of a new project.
Hi,
Thanks for joining the Motorola Feedback Network. We are preparing a project
for owners of the "Google Experience Device" version of the WiFi-only
Motorola Xoom. (This is the U.S. version only.) If you own this particular
model, we would like to invite you to participate.
Click this link to take a short enrollment survey for this project. Please
note that you must be a member in good standing of the Motorola Owners'
Forums to take part. We have recently moved our forums communities to a new
site, and YOU MUST RE-REGISTER to be considered a member. Please visit our
new site and complete your registration update if you have not done so
already. Be sure to fill out the MFN opt-in information on the new site.
This is a confidential project under the terms of the Motorola Feedback
Network. Do not post any details or information about this project on any
public sites.
Thanks -- please understand that project start times are always fluid. We ask
for your patience if you register but don't hear from us right away.

Did anybody get a copy of the email? Does anybody know what's going on?
I first read it here.

Thank god some update

Its certainly great that the Xoom is getting ICS. Kind of wish it was released back in November alongside the Nexus. The Xoom is a Google Experience Device, so I'm wondering why Moto/Goog didn't get this up and running sooner.
Hopefully the 3G/LTE version get the update very soon after!

I got the email this morning going to re-register when I get home

my guess, to merge in the camera and microphone drivers, the xoom 4.0.3 aosp was released what 2 weeks ago and they are already going to test this in a time where nobody does any work, the team eos rom was awesome and i think we should all be very very excited for our xooms that we paid so dearly for to finally work the way they were intended.
wild guess, 2 to 4 weeks before it's out for the 3g/4g lte xooms or at least i hope!

any update as to wat this is? So we all can return to stock and join if it's ICS

My guess is that if this is indeed ICS, then Motorola will release the much needed drivers for the camera and other things and the devs working on the ICS roms can just incorporate those into their builds and there will be no need for going back to stock.

Plus, be careful that future updates don't somehow lock down the bootloader. Some may not care, but I won't ever willingly go back to stock.

This is the direct link to the "survey" that signs you up straight out of the email that I got:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NR5YG85

Requirements are mentioned above but for those that missed it:
U.S. WiFi "Google Experience" devices ONLY.
Must be a registered member "in good standing" at the new Motorola user forums.
To anyone that does get in, don't forget to break the terms and tell us all as soon as you know what its all about......lol

Not for UK users then hmm

So I'm guessing Canadian xoom owners don't get a shot at this? It's odd because our tablets and OS's are pretty much identical. Crazy why Canada gets shutout as it should be North American tablets.

The OS isn't. That's why we got 3.2 ages after the US. Actually, did they ever release 3.2 for the Canadian Xoom? I wouldn't know as I reflashed with the US ROM when I got sick of waiting for 3.1.
The Canadian ROM has some US-only stuff removed such as Amazon MP3, and there were a few other differences too (3.0 had a whole different update checking module for instance).
Right now our best chance is for Team EOS to get their hand on it, be able to lift the missing binaries from it, and get us a 99% working ICS before Moto does (and probably months before Canadian owners gets an official ICS update as well).

Could someone please explain to me if this link is for real or a fake? Thanks in advance.

Yes, they released 3.2 for the Xoom last month from what I heard.
I returned my Galaxy Tab 10.1 to the store yesterday and picked up a Xoom. The performance is much better on the Xoom it looks like. I know the screen isn't as good but the performance seems much better.

Reports coming in that Xoom Wifi owners have received the updates today!

Hey Xoomers! It appears that wifi-only xoom owners are also having the updates pushed to their tabs also! I have not received it yet, but be patient, looks like all Xooms are being updated!
https://supportforums.motorola.com/message/380602#380602
could be an accident. looks like people over there are getting silenced about the update
From the sounds of it, this was meant to go out to their preview members only. I guess someone jumped the gun and didn't bother to let them know they weren't supposed to talk about it.
Which is only a guess, since the corporate rep on the forums has been very vague - only a single post with a "maybe" and then a bunch of posts insisting that people who have stated they got an update check their email.
I wonder if Motorola has really internalized the fact that there are, like, four or five other vendors for these tablets coming out in the next few months - many of them with very, very similar hardware. Not communicating with their tech-savvy audience seems like a poor way to convince people to recommend their tablet over others.
They need to share this ****!!!

i got the update on my WIFI ONLY xoom i tried installing it it crashed on the android with exclamation mark, so i restarted and its back on 3.0.1 and says its up to date
DAMMIT
not only in usa
also reported in my country
Seems moto launch a experiment
This is pretty disappointing. The update obviously exists and works on the wifi xoom but google won't release it yet probably just to make Verizon happy.
Are people really going to go out and buy 3g xooms just because the update on Verizon came first.

Hmm Being in Denmark and having purchased a US Xoom Wifi I wonder what to do. (Stock 3.0)
So I did the following ...
Added a VPN tunnel to USA. (had previosly brought VPN access)
Set the date 1 day back, to let the Xoom look for updates.
" no cigar! "
Set the date 1 day forward (today´s date)
Still no luck -
I wonder if the update is really rolling out
Can Anyone confirm Xoom Wifi is really getting 3.1 right now ?
Is there Anyway to "push" it - (besides the date change procedure)
Have a good one

I also have a US WIFI only Xoom in Europe and i'm impatient
I downloaded the update from development forum, made a host USB cable and updated my Xoom manually.
I must say that everything that i hoped for is fixed in 3.1, so i'm really pleased with my Xoom now.

Read the Guide thread, all information is there, including a link to how to make a host cable. If something is still unclear, then just ask.
Not according to my conversation with Motorola today. Can you buy a wi-fi only from Verizon? Just wondering if those are still branded differently and that's why they're getting updates.
For now 32GB is plenty for me so I'm not exactly screaming for the SD card update. But I will be a little disappointed if I have to wait weeks for my update when Verizon got theirs already. There were several items in the list below that I was really hoping to take advantage of. I'm not exactly crying over the update just yet though, because I'd rather do the official OTA update than download directly like others have been doing. However, I will pre-qualify all this with...the rep I spoke with didn't seem to be the most knowlegable and appeared to be reading from a script based on the responses I was given to some other questions I asked. So take this with a grain of salt.
Ann: Motorola XOOM with Wi-Fi tablets and other variants of Motorola XOOM will receive the update within the next several weeks.
frost: will this update include the sd card support?
Ann: It does not.
frost: will that fix be implemented any time in the near future?
Ann: It's enhancements are:
● Enables movie services including Android Market Movie Rental via full HDCP / DRM support
● Enables support for full Adobe Flash 10.2 release
● Picture Transfer Protocol Feature Support
● Bluetooth(R) support in Gtalk
● Bluetooth(R) mouse support along with further Bluetooth(R) headset support
● Adding Proxy support for Wi-Fi network
● Resizable widgets
● Additional shortcut key support for Bluetooth keyboard
Ann: Yes. A future software upgrade will enable the SD card.
So I've changed my Date & Time and still haven't recieved my 3.1 Update for my Wifi Xoom.
Any suggestions....???? (Besides being patient...... just can't do that....)

Has anyone else with a Wifi model got there update today?

Motorola releasing 3.1 update to Wifi users today!!

Hello Xoomers!! Motorola announced that they are releasing Honeycomb 3.1 to Xoom Wifi owners starting today in phases. I believe the updates are based on your MAC addresses on your Xooms, this was what I was told (sources withheld) but I can not confirm this 100%. Anyway, we should start seeing a steady rollout of updates as there have been no issues with the updates with Xoom 3g owners. Please be sure to thank me
Fingers crossed!!
Forgot to mention, the official WIfi only version of 3.1 does NOT contain the Movie tab in the marketplace. No biggie to me, but it will be released sometime later.
I hope this is true bc u have no idea how happy just seeing this post made me lol.
Is ut only the US version of wifi-only that will start to get the update?
How about the European version? Will it start to roll out to us to?
Can only find info that people with the US version have got it. What about we with Eu version,

LOL..I pissed my pants while typing it I was so happy! But yes I have confirmation fro other Wifi owners who have received the update this morning EST. Also there has been official word on the update being released to wifi users. I cant wait to see the popup on my xoom. Remember though, its in phases, so please be patient people. Also, 3.1 does not fix the slowness in auto rotate because this is not a google problem, its an issue with the Xoom models which should be patched soon(again sources withheld) may have something to do with increasing the cache but again Im not 100% sure on this. Good luck!!

This was not done purposely, looks like their was a "bug" which caused issues with Wifi owners. But I would rather have the update now than to have to wait another few weeks just for the movie tab to be added. Enjoy your 3.1!! I'm told that the auto-rotate issue should be patched also hopefully soon!!

Hey there! yes, the SD issue is NOT Motorola's fault, contrary to what is believed..this is a issue with Honeycomb itself which Google is aware of and will fix. The other tablets that do have the SD card support are using a "work-around" but its not the official fix. From what I "hear" the issue is how Honeycomb sees the SD card, this will be officially fixed soon. I believe that the other tabs will receive an update for the SD card also, as the way it works for them is not "official"

Another post eslewhere in this forum mentioned that Motorola tech support said that a "fix" (not sure if that means Xoom only temp fix or a permanent fix from Google) for the SD card was finalized and would be pushed at close to the same time as the 3.1 update.

Maybe they don't need any more, since the leaked firm from chinese. Now they know what the problems are, and maybe they fixed whats wrong. Since most of Xoom owners jumped to EOS firm, who's gonna need the official. That was a joke, ofcourse we need the official firm

yeah they should speed up the update release. It's quite disappointing since I heard about the Prime ICS release which is said to arrive before the Xoom? oO
The Xoom is a Google experience device like all the Nexus phones. Google is the one that controls the updates. Verizon may hold up the process a bit for the 3G/4g versions, but it is essentially a Google controlled device. One has to wonder what is taking so long, but after hearing about the Transformer Prime update woes I don't mind the little extra wait, unless its another 6 month wait like it was to get the LTE upgrade.

Something Strange Has Happened To My GED WiFi Xoom

For some odd reason I can NOW Move, Delete, Copy, Paste etc. etc. on my SD Card from SDCARDXD. I did NOT sign up for the ICS update. I am NOT Rooted & I am still running Stock. I have NO idea what has happened. Does anyone know what may have happened. I DON'T have EOS ICS. Nothing has changed since the day I bought my GED WiFi Xoom (Day 1).
Right now I am using SDCARDXD and moving Movies from the MNT/External1 Folder to MNT/SDCard/Movies, then Deleting the Movies from External1 I can't believe it. It is Amazing. I have NOT used my Xoom in about a Month because I could NOT do these functions without the use of my PC. I wanted to do it Internally and I decided to pick up my Xoom today and started to play with it and I can do what I could NOT do a Month ago. I am just wondering what HAPPENED?
All I'm going to say is...great! I'm really glad it's working for you, and better late than never!
All I EVER wanted from my GED Xoom was to be able to work on my SD Card Internally WITHOUT Root. That's why I got a GED Pure Android Device
Thanks Bro.

If you wouldn't have been so busy ranting about how terrible the Xoom is, maybe you would have seen this app months ago when gmanapps released it. It was the talk of the town on the Motorola users forum.
As gmanapps has said many times, the API calls are there, but developers are not using them. So he made use of them and wrote the app.
It must suck to not be able to see the forest for the trees.

Weird, market search on xoom doesn't find it. Market search on laptop finds it, lets me by it and loads it on xoom

You know what, you TALK ALOT OF **** and ASSUME wayyyyy too much. I bought GmanApps (SDCARDXD) the day it was released for $1.49. I remember when he released that App and I bought it day 1. I also commented on Nov 7th under (Ghodzilla5150 or BigFame) OH SNAP, LOL At that time he had not put in Delete Mode yet or Move & Paste. He also wrote a long synopsis on why he thought GED was holding BACK US Xoom's and how he thought ICS was NOT going to HELP with the SD Card issue.
Instead of stalking ME, maybe YOU should read the Moto Forum's a little more. He talked about this BEFORE they changed the Forum format. He did NOT want to post his beliefs believing he would get Banned because that's what they do on the Moto Forums. Ban anyone who Negatively speaks ill about their Precious GED Xoom.

It looks like it would work for you, but it's a paid app. Are you on HC 3.2.1? The level of update seems to be required for non-US Xoom.
Good luck.

New to the Motorola Xoom... Very excited!

I just purchased a Motorola Xoom. I figured as everything I have read, it is the best tablet thus far, I should dive in. I started with a dell streak 5" phone/tablet, and then graduated to a Dell Streak 7" tablet, but the random reboots were killing me, not to mention Dells lack of support (if there ever really was some in the first place.
I've read about the new tegra quad core devices coming out soon, but figured it would be a year or so after they are introduced before the capabilities of that tablet could be fully utilized, and seeing the pages upon pages of support for an already well established device, the Xoom, here I am joining your ranks.
Tracking shows it is out for delivery so I'm giddy with excitement! I'm a true tech-hound, so I am pretty sure most of you understand what I'm saying.
Any suggestions right off the bat? I'd hate to dive in like every other tablet I've used and overlook something.
I also ordered the HD speaker dock. any thoughts on that as well?

Great choice and welcome! I love the Xoom and recommend you get a Team EOS ROM right away. If you're a flashoholic then grab the nightlies if not I would go with the 1.0. Don't you dare use Honeycomb!
I think the HD dock is awesome and has great quality and volume. Use it to watch movies and listen to music quite a bit.

The first thiing you will do upon opening it and connecting via WiFi will be the Android Honeycomb upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich. Go ahead and update that and then spend a couple of weeks with it, reading about the Xoom and its capabilities and customize it. Everything you need to know can be found right here. Enjoy your new Xoom!

Just got my tablet, and had to apply two different updates to it. after the 2d update & reboot, I'm showing:
Model Number: MZ604
Android version: 3.2
Firmware configuration version: GAS_ASIA_UCAHUBLWFRTIRD_P009
Kernal version: 2.6.36.3-00042-g3cta41e [email protected]#1
Build number: h.6.6-23
So, Amazon sold me an asian tablet that doesn't register for the ICS update? Am I reading this correctly?

Wow, I am not sure but rest easy, the people in here will help you out. Let a few hours go by and the forum will read your post and help out. Someone will offer better advise than I can give you. I did find this thread that shows the different models but I don't see any with your build number 6.6-23

If you plan to root your Xoom, it won't matter what version you have because all wifi-only Xooms have the same hardware. They are all wingray devices as far as I know, and can flash the Team EOS ICS wingray rom.
Tried this, but I can't even get clock work mod to install. I keep getting an error message saying device is still locked... looks like I have alot of reading to do to figure this out. I",m very familiar with fastboot & CWM, but a new device is a.always a news device. Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

You would have to do unlock first...
To do this you would need the fastboot drivers from motodev (don't just install drivers from moto, you need the motodev ones).
After you have the drivers and adb setup, then you can boot your device to the bootloader using adb reboot bootloader
then after your device entered the bootloader and your computer registered it, then type fastboot oem unlock on the adb
then follow on screen instructions on your tablet to get it unlocked.
Once unlocked you are ready to flash the trivial stuff.
I unlocked, installed CWM and rooted my WiFi Xoom using this tutorial. Can highly recommend it.
that´s true,
i unlocked my new xoom with universal root -> dev section
flashed CWM - and then flashed a lot of nightly´s
now i am on EOS 1.0 and it rocks!
Hooray! I found a post that explains how to change the OS to a US version here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1166106&highlight=mz604+unlock
I researched how to unlock the bootloader, and once done, I followed these instructions. It put me back to the original honeycomb, and then after 4 updates, I am now on the stock version of ICS.
I'm very excited!
I'm going to play with this to get used to it, but everywhere i read it seems that the ROM Team Eos ICS 1.0.0, is the way to go.
Can anyone tell me why?

EOS ICS Rom 1.0.0 is very stable and very full-featured. You will be blown away.
guys one question but it´s a little off topic:
would you recommend to buy the xoom or wait for the new quadcore tablets ( like asus or huawei ).
I mean the xoom is already one year old and costs about 380€ for the 3g version...
thanks in advance!

I thought about this exact situation extensively before I bought my Xoom (wingray) two weeks ago. My final selling point is that the Xoom is a year old, so all of the bugs have been worked out, multiple stable working ROM's are available, and it is updated with ICS! I realize there are newer tablets out there, with quad core processors, and I'm sure they are fantastic! But the Xoom is fantastic in & of itself! I may upgrade in another year or two, but the Xoom is an incredible device and I've tried multiple tablets, from the dell streak 5, 7 & iPad 2 to the kindle fire, and I love my xoom the most!
