[Q] Gateway A60 Questions - Acer Iconia A500

I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction...
Is there a recovery image for the A60 out there or is there a way I could build my own? I have used nvflash quite a bit on my gtablet and would not feel comfortable doing anything on the gateway until I had this safety net.
Any help would be appreciated.

Not absolute positive but i belive this might be the same as the acer a 500.. i know there is a packard bell that is .
post all the information.. including kernel / rom firmware reversions and so on maybe someone can tell for sure .

Yep, it's the same as an a500. Just re-skinned. Should be able to run Iconia root. Acer recovery, and A500 roms (but it will call it an a500).
one or 2 others have seemed to already have done it awhile back;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1360666
One more note: If you did the updates, and your OS is now version 3.2, you will have to do the rollback to 3.0 to get root and recovery. Then you can flash the 3.2 roms from the dev forums. there are a couple of guides on how to do this. There is also a newer method, that will install a rooted 3.2. I believe the thread author is jimmydean or timmydean.

Specs are as follows:
Model: TPA60W
Version:3.2.1 ( I hit yes to the update... When will I learn!?!)
Kernel: 2.6.36.3+
Build: GW_TPA60W_4.010.02_PA_GEN1
After reading the other post I am sure that this is the same as the Iconia A500. I am hoping to get this rooted with timmydeans instructions but am not sure if I can return it back to stock if I have to send it in for warranty.
Are there any full backup programs out there or is there a way for me to create my own nvflash image or equivalent?

After you root, and rom., whatever happens, you can re-install acer recovery, and run a stock rom to return to stock.

This site rules...
I got confirmation from Gateway that rooting and installing a custom ROM does not void the warranty and then followed the downgrading guide and installed a new ROM with no issues!
Thanks to all of the devs out there who keep letting us push the boundaries of our tablets!
As a side note, the stock rom offered by Gateway is awesome. Lightning quick and has everything you would ever need. The only reason I chose to root was because I cant live without my Titanium Backup and needed Root access!
Cheers and a Happy New Year to all!

I agree that this site is amazing, but the rep that you spoke to is completely incorrect. Any kind of rooting on any device DOES void your warranty (unless you go back to stock). Just a little bit of info for you.
Sent from my A500 using xda premium

It does say in the warranty that they are not responsible for such things as flashed devices. However I think for the most part Acer/PB and gateway from others in this thread have sent there to be repaired with no trouble or charges. Just please people if you brick it own up to it.they will know when they get it anyway.
Lieing about how you bricked it is wrong.
But I still also believe acer should have a way for us to get around this security or a self unbrick tool.

I know you've already figured this out but I'll throw in my piece anyway. I also have the gateway 100% A500 re-skinned. Sister in-law works for acer and confirmed flashing roms is not acceptable for warranty BUT like everything else it depends on the person in the service centre. They could just overlook the fact that it's rooted but up to you if you think it's worth the risk. I have flashed any number of kernel/rom combinations and all work fine.

[Q] Root for Stock 3.2 A500

First off thanks for all the the great roms and how to's to all the devs ... I have flashed to stock 3.2 now i can't gain root ..... any ideas???
Currently there is no way to root the stock 3.2 FOTA. Nor can you go back to the older ROMs as a new bootloader was written when you flashed.
itsmagic and CWM no longer work.
Thanks for the the quick reply... was afraid of that answer ,guess I am gonna have to wait. I sure someone will figure it out real soon ...

Always a good idea to search XDA before flashing a new ROM for your device.
or like me, I was in 3.1 stock, waiting for the 3.2 update and custom ROM.
But my girlfriend find the time to update it without me
Now i've to wait for the root of 3.2 from scratch

I'm having the same problem. Just after buying my A500, I updated it to 3.2 but I didn't know that root wasn't available in that version. Nor that I couldn't downgrade to 3.1 because of the new bootloader.
Does anyone know if it's possible to downgrade this bootloader in order to downgrade to stock 3.1 rom too? I feel that the answer is that it's not possible...

No. It's not currently possible.
I'll probably get people barking at me for suggesting this, but given that you've only recently purchased your tablet, you could always take it back and exchange it. Depending on where you got it from, they may have a satisfaction return window (usually 14-30 days for big box retail). This would allow you to return to an older version, or upgrade to a custom 3.2 ROM instead.
Normally this type of behavior is frowned upon, mainly because it is speculated to result in raised prices of consumer products in general. In truth, really it is up to the retailer. If they are willing to observe a satisfaction return policy, and you are unsatisfied with the product, you are operating within the business perimeters that they've established. It wouldn't be illegal, so its merely a question of your own morality and your willingness to take advantage.
I guess it depends on how badly you need root. For me, it is a show-stopper. My tablet sits at home now that I've lost root, mainly because it is useless for my needs without ad-hoc support.
Or you could just wait for the 3.2 root, but my gut tells me it might be a while. I don't know why, but I have a bad feeling about this particular upgrade. That's not really based on anything factual though.
Cheers,

That could be because most of the "real A500 DEVS" ( not just ROM chefs) have left this forum for a less hostile environment.

I was going to wait for the 3.2 root but now that you say it might take (lot of) time, I think I'll try to give it back to the store.
I need this root for many things, ie : mounting my nas shared folders.

I use ES file explorer, and it opens my NAS shared folders just fine without root.
(of course I also want root for many things, that's just not one of them anymore)
can't wait untill the root for 3.2 it's coming! please crack that off!
I'm waiting for 3.2 root.
I'm also waiting for 3.2 root, because i want stock 3.2 with root. Right now i'm on Honeyvillain 1.2 with no issues so far, only SU. But that's a common problem right now for 3.2 ROMS.
What do you think about change wpa_supplicant in update.zip before flash with a version that support ad-hoc network?

Once you are on stock 3.2 you can not root, and you can not downgrade, and you can not flash any modified or non-stock image. There is simply no way to do this until someone finds a way to root 3.2

I guess that's not correct, at least for A501 but I think for A500, too.
I followed those steps to get a rooted HC 3.2 for my A501:
- Download HC 3.1: Acer_A500_4.017.07_EMEA_CUS7 http://cdn.acer.futuredial.com/Acer_A500_0.000.00_4.017.07_EMEA_CUS7_1311771237783_253e5e46.zip
- Download Decrypter [DEV][APP] http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1099673
- Decrypt downloaded file with Decrypter (put Decrypter and Acer_A500_0.000.00_4.017.03_EMEA_CUS7.zip into same folder)
- Unzip Acer_A500_0.000.00_4.017.03_EMEA_CUS7_decrypt.zip
- Copy update.zip from the above package to MicroSD card of A501
- shutdown (NOT restart!) A501
- Power up the tablet using Volume - & Power buttons (hold buttons until text shows up)
- A501 finds update.zip and Update will commence
After that you will have HC 3.1 on your tablet. Now root your tablet with iconiaroot 1.3 (use google to find the apk). Once it is rooted you are able to install ClockWorkMod via Acer Recovery Installer from Market, there's a thread somewhere around here, too.
Then look at thread:
[ROM][24.08]Acer A500 HC 3.2 4.015.01[HC 3.2][CWM & root] - xda-developers
So far I have no problems, everything's seem to work okay, WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G...
Hope this helps! However, I am not responsible if you brick your device! Do it on your own risk!

Gateway TAB Tp a60 - Can I use Iconia ROMS etc?

I just bought a Gateway TAB TP a60, basically the same as the acer Iconia, I want to know can I follow all the standard steps for the Acer Iconia to root etc?
Also can I use swype and some other handwritting programs on it if I get the APK files, or do I need to root first?
Basically, the TP a60 is just a rebranded A500, with the gateway logo instead of Acer. But all the hardware is the same.
Of course one can't "promise" the steps are the same, but, before you update your android version, and I don't advise you to, I would run the iconia root just to see if it works.
Your a60 should have shipped with version 3.1, which is what you should keep (will make the root process easier).
And then, if the root was successful, I would use the AcerRecovery from the Market, and see if you can flash the custom recovery package. It will probably either work, or not. If it doesn't work, or if something messes up, you can always do the master reset (pinhole).
But, you do this at your own risk, as do all of us. So if something goes wrong, well, we're not responsible. Everybody who builds roms, kernels and root processes will tell you the same
Generally, as a number 1 rule, you never want to install a recovery or Rom/Kernel, that is not specifically for your device. However, there are a couple of exceptions.
Good luck, and let us know how it turns out.
It should work fine. If you go to settings and check about tablet, you may see that the device is called a500! If not I wouldn't worry. I have a gateway and I've flashed pretty much every rom kernel combination there is for an a500
Just do a nandroid backup beforehand and you can always restore if something doesn't work the way it should.
I'm on taboonay 2.2 using richardtrips 3.7 kernel, which is pretty good and stable. Thor's rom is very smooth and fast but I had issues with site images not loading. Check out the dev threads and you'll get a better idea of what you can get.
Is there any guide or tutorial to make this process of change TPA60W to A500?
Thanks

As a matter of fact he did come to think of it. But I believed he lost a hard drive about a year ago, and probably lost everything.
All Gateway did was take an A500, rebrand it, and tossed in a couple stupid Gateway specific apps.
Summoning @civato
A standard ROM should install fine though.

[Q] Bootloader on NEW A500

Hey,
I've looked through the forum and I'm a bit puzzled how is it with the bootloader "lock" on newly purchased models as I was thinking a bit of buying A500.
I read that the bootloader only checks for checksums when booting kernel / recovery (unless set to generate them), so you can put there custom kernel (get rid of Java Android) when you root it, which I read is not a problem even with 3.2.1 .
The thing I'm puzzled about is that I read there was a BL update and some say the BL is locked since that update and others not - so if I decide to buy A500 and there will be 3.2 with the BL update on it, is it locked and requiring signed kernel image or is it still the checksum only thing?

No problem. I'll try to put it in "laymans" terms.
Manufacturers don't want you mucking with things. It causes more tech support for them, and also a bad image reputation when stupid people screw things up.
So what they do, is change bootloaders, the part that tells the tab, that the os they are loading, is 100% Acer. If it's not, it's just going to give you a silly face.
So we, here in the Acer community, try to find a way around the bootloader. And invent ways to install a operating system other than Acer.
It's an ongoing battle it seems. We find a way around it, Acer changes the rules, so we have to find another way.
The thing is, our dev's are smarter than their devs. Even HTC gave up, and just offer bootloader unlocks. Besides, they take our innovations, and incorporate them into their newer releases.
So the point is, if you buy a 500, or a 501, XDA community will give the means to unlock it. Root, so we say. And people will help you get it running right.
Here at XDA, we have many roms, from plain rooted stock roms, to cooked roms with OC kernels.
Ah, oops, placed the question incorrectly, I know how the things work around bootloaders and have designed some workarounds. I was rather asking whether new a model of A500 can run custom kernel (don't mean modifications with modules now) or not - but summarizing what you've said: every A500 can run custom kernel, right? Thanks for answering in any case.
Currently on a new A500 with root and kernel. Manufactured in December 11. whole process took an hour. Hope this helps.

IIRC, only 3.2.1 locked the bootloader, so even if your a500 comes with 3.2 you're safe.
That said, even with 3.2.1 and a locked bootloader, there is a downgrade trick that allows you to go from 3.2.1 (or 3.2, or 3.1) to 3.0 and run an app called iconiaroot and acer recovery installer. Iconiaroot is like z4root, VISIONary, gingerbreak, etc and recovery installer installs CWM recovery from within android. After doing all this you can flash any rom or kernel you want.

YES if your a500 has Stock android 3.2 or above.. you will have to fallow the downgrade rom flashing. Then you can flash any rom of your choice . there are several threads on this forum explaining how to do this..
Do a search for the thread by Timmy Dean.. his method i think has been called the easiest. It flashes your tablet to a rooted 3.21 stock rom thru adb . from your windows computer..
Acer has yet to plug this hole. So i would not take ANY OTA UPDATES. Im looking for ics if ever releases to plug such holes in the boot loader and stop its magic .
Happy Flashing just please understand everything before proceeding.. there are enough help i bricked my iconia threads.. Boohoo i hate to see anyone do that to such a expensive device..
Thanks. Ordered a piece
So basically I need to store UID, first x bytes in mmcblk0 (for the mmcblk0_start) from sc2k thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1129873) and I'm pretty much brick safe (should I screw both kernel & recovery).
Happy Flashing
That in theory will give you the resources to recover . BUT BY NO MEANS A Get of of trouble free pass..
do not flash nothing you don't trust and Fallow all instructions Carefully.. You sound well on your way to Making the best of your tablet...
Enjoy your time on xda Iconia forum. There are some awesome people on here. NO im not including myself in that .. Im just a bored thread reading chic. that repeats what i have read... nothing i know is my own work..
Happy Flashing..

New Owner :),. I need Help

Hi Guy's,
I just bought this tab yesterday and I love it so far ., I just don't like the camera resolution which really sucks compared to other 5MP camera shooter Sphones or tab. Also I get this weird humming/buzzing/kinda pitchy noise when I'm charging my tab with the screen on ,but when it's on standby it just disappears. . Playing 1080p movies sucks too ; kinda choppy .I want to root it, but I search around this forum and couldn't decide which is the best and the easiest way/method to do it.I'm running honeycomb 3.2.1 and does CMW recovery included when I root it? or do i have to install it after? Also I read some threads that I need to make a ROM/files backup but I think it only applies to rooted device right?I saw that ICS+root leak but im kinda hesitant ,they said you may not received future OTA updates? & does it include CMW recovery? Im sorry ist kinda confusing. I hope you guys can give me some tips and advise. Thanks.
First off .. Any modification you do to protected software/rom from acer will likely cause you issues with OTA updates. as far as the noise this has been reported by some people . Some quite bad some only a bit. I would suggest trying to charge it with a different wall plug in your home. maybe another room that is on a different circuit . using a surge protector can also help this. If you bought the tab from a brick and mortar store . You could exchange it very easly.
To know the requirements to root your device you would have to post what rom version you are on.
3.0 - 3.1 you can root with iconia root .. install acer recovery installer then flash recovery from there .Then you can update to one of the latest recoveries from there being cwm or RA .. Ra would be my recommendation
3.2 and above you need to downgrade method to be able to root
Again there are links in this forum and as you say several ways Timmy Deans seem to be the most used .
The above is NOT intended to be a guide on how to do any of the necessary.. but only to confirm what your asking . as your post is very wide open asking alot of information.
Please be specific as to your rom version and what you wish to do . And we can point you in the right direction..
Good luck.. Welcome to forum
Root does not give you CWM recovery - it just gives you root access. You install CWM separately after you root your device. To make backups, you need CWM. Unfortunately you're on 3.2.1 and there's no way to root it and as erica said you need to downgrade first.

3.Preferred Max clock speed which is reliable and usable?
4.App or a tweak that will let me play 1080P videos

6.Ist possible to put a simcard on A500? I think they just put a sticker next to the sd card slot., but i didint removed it .

Thor's CWM - install and then you can update it easily from tegraowners.com to the latest version
Drelisdee's recovery - you can flash it on top of thor's if you're not confortable with ADB

For questions 1 and 2, I would suggest reading through this sticky. It has other threads that can specifically answer your questions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1209988
3. I have had clock speeds up to 1.5GHz on my tablet without experiencing any issues, but your mileage may vary.
4. For 1080p, you should read this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1184002
5. I currently use Taboonay 3.0.1, which works fine for my needs. But because these are custom roms, each one will have their pros and cons. My suggestion is to look through the Android development thread, read the first few messages of each of the rom threads (usually you'll get what the rom has or doesn't have in those) and download one (or more if you like to try things out like I do). Then go into recovery (once you get it installed), make a backup of your current rom, do a factory reset and flash your new rom.
6. No, it is not possible to put a simcard in the A500. From what I read, there are physical components missing on the motherboard to make a simcard work. The A501 is exactly like the A500, but it has a 3G module built in (which accepts simcards).

I don't think that's too likely to happen, look at HC3.2 +.... You have to revert back to 3.0 or 3.1 to root your tab...
Also the new bootloader seems to be a real mongrel to go around, if that IS the final bootloader that will be shipped or a red herring to distract devs from the real bootloader which may be harder to crack/circumvent which took a good 3 or 4 days now. It also looks like it could be an incomplete bootloader so who knows what the final monster will be like...
thanks
hi guys thank u for the support & ideas.... Ived managed to root my A500 HC3.2.1 with thors v1.5 CMW i havnet installed any roms yet cuz im kinda scared of bugs....well if u guys can suggest a new rom that is bugless & fun to be a daily driver....then im gonna try it . Also Ived try a camcorder patch that will let us record 1080P on rear camera & 720p on front, but only the front camera works so i revert to the old 1's. I wish they will come up something like that or a fix maybe. .
1. Brower fix? It fc sometimes
2.any tweak that will make camera less grainy? Other 5mp phones has a better results than ours ;(
3. Im looking for a hard case for my tab but amazon only sells those folio type ;P

[Q] Full backup of Acer Iconia A500

Please dear God help me out with this, I am so lost! So I bought an Acer A500 tab, and I want to root it. But before that! I want to save the current firmware and the CWM due to me having a two year warranty on the device, and I'm a afraid if I were to return the device with issues clearly it'll void the warranty since I've rooted the device. So please can anybody help me out? I am in huge need of help!
Thanks in advance!
To help you I need first some information about your tab. First, what android version is installed on your tab? The best backup will be with CWM but then you need root.
Of course you could connect your tab to the PC via USB and copy everything to your HDD. But I think here you need root as well to be able to see the system folders... .

A paradox.
You can't save your current rom in it's native form unless you root. And you can't save it, unless you install a custom recovery. And even then, you're saving a modified OS that if you restore, will be modified. So a paradox.
So if you want to root, and install roms, you'll just have to suck it up like everybody else
Fortunately, lots of methods to revert back to stock in case needed.
So, you either take the plunge, or stay stock.
Not only that but most Big Box stores dont have a clue and rarely look at it anyway ,unless you tell them its something you did (which would void the warranty) . But for me personally I void warranty within a few hours on everything I get , if its electronic they always take it back , I wouldnt worry about it , run a bunch of stress tests for a couple days if the components are sound ,it will complete them no problem , then root away and have fun!
Thank you all!
Thank you all for your replies! I can honestly say, I can happily root my device without a worry now. But I have a couple of things I'd like to ask, for one. What is a cpu ID? Also say for example I rooted my device and want to revert back to the original OS is that possible or not? Here is my current information.
Android Version
3.0.1
Kernel Version
2.6.36.3-00001-gf991e5d
Build number
Acer_A500_1.016.05_COM_GEN1
That's my current information. IF anybody of you guys call tell me I would like to root my device but with ICS not with Honeycomb since at the moment that's what I currently have. Also I have 2 year warranty.
Cheers! And much appreciation!
First, this is an excellent post about CPUIDs, why you need them, and how to get them posted by dibb_nz ... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25429111#post25429111 this will really give some direction on why it's important and how you can get it.
If you want to root an ICS rom I recommend reading this post from Civato on how to upgrade your bootloader to v6: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622425 I recommend the Automated Flashing tools for ease, but the manual version is good if you want to know more about what you're doing on the tablet.
Then pick a ROM, I personally use Flexreaper Extreme, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22964651&postcount=1 but there are several out there to choose from, I recommend putting several on your MicroSD card before you start any portion of the process and that way you have several to choose from, test between them, and don't "over customize" until you make your decision.
Finally, I'll remind to you, as many others will do, BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!
Good Luck, and most importantly, have fun!

You freaking rock bro! I have a question, since I already have Honeycomb on my Android by default, would I need to root first before I update it to the newer version of the ICS? OR would I just have to manually update it first and then begin the process of rooting the device? I as well admire Flexreaper Extreme. I also noticed there are special mods for the device to change the skin etc...Would you know where I can get the tutorial on that? I know I'm jumping too much, but I'm too darn excited to do this. Hahaha.
Cheers!

You should be able to start the process by going through the steps in Civato's post on how to change your Bootloader, make sure you have a ROM on the MicroSD before doing this, and then follow the steps to install the ROM you choose.

In the OP for Flexreaper there are discussions about how to install the customizations, Civ wrote a great beginners guide to modding that might help, posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1648162

Sounds like it didn't install cleanly. Double check the checksum, try redownload, wipe everything and reinstall. If that doesn't work make sure that your bootloader and Rom match.

Hi! Thanks for your reply I have successfully rooted my device after hours of research I had to reinstall everything from scratch, unfortunately my build for my tab isn't the same as the the build I had it when I bought it, oh well...So now I have HC 3.0.1
So now I want to flash the device, is that possible? I want to get that ICS look without updating it to the ICS. I was wondering what would you advice me to do? haha, I know I'm asking way too many questions in this single form, I have an excuse for that I'm a noob, hahaha. But seriously your help is very much appreciated!
I will suggest rooting your HC ROM first, then install recovery for example via acer recovery installer. Make a backup then!
After that you can use AFTEROTA to upgrade the bootliader and recovery. When finished install an ICS ROM of your choice. With the help from AFTEROTA you can all ways go back to stock HC version.

[Solved] Thank you every that helped me
Thank you guys for your help and advices! I have successfully updated and rooted, and flashed my device after hours of reading and going through posts, hahaha. Of course I did do a full backup of everything and now I am good to go! Again thanks again guys, much appreciation!
Cheers! Moe Kami!
