Battery Obsession - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

What is wrong with almost everyone's obsession regarding battery life??
Oh my gosh I'm so tired of hearing everyone saying: I have switched everything off now and still only get 2 days of use.. Why??
If you want a weeks worth of battery life get 1" non-touch black & white screen phone.
If you want a awesome phone get a Galaxy Note, switch everything on, sync your social networks and mail every 10 minutes. Browse the web on the awesome 5.3" screen, play games and enjoy the phone to the full. So what if you need to charge it every 12hours.

2 days 10 hours with light usage (1 hour screen on time, automatic brightness, few 5 minute calls, about 20 notes, apps updating and some browsing over wifi) and still have 70% left.
It depends on the user. It surely has the juice to cope with heavy use. I couldn't be more happy

No cheats here, just light usage

bassarnis, be a pal and tell us how the hell you managed that. even with light usage i'd be lucky to get 15+ hrs.

Roger that, entering good guy Greg mode.
First of all, the fist charges are important. Once i bought it, i updated it to latest 2.3.6 OTA and started using it till it shut itself off. Then charged it to full while off. Repeated this circle 5-6 times, maybe more. I haven't rooted the device yet. Its 100% stock running KK5. (Europe)
As i am in places where there is wifi available, i switched data off. In wireless and network options, i use "GSM only" mode. I left auto synch, auto brightness and gps on.
Widgets. I use the stock weather, stock digital clock, battery solo widget, stock task killer, stock news and weather, stock calendar. All those spread across 6 homescreens with 39 other app shortcuts on a black/silver background.
About the light usage. 5-6 times a day, i switch wifi on for synching. I read my mail and check my Facebook messages. Once i am done doing whatever i wanted to do that requires internet (update any app that requires updating etc.), i switch wifi off.
Lastly, before going to sleep, i close all active apps using the stock task killing widget and clear the ram. Overnight, i lose 2% battery.

Now that's what I call a battery obsession!
I just use my device as I see fit, and top up charge when I can - I have a Micro USB cable on my keyring, which means I've always got a charging cable on me.
Regards,
Dave

I see things like this and I cringe... It's a smartphone. It shouldn't need all this garbage done to it to get good battery life. It shouldn't need toggling, everything should be on, push notifications should be used, and it should still get good battery life

YEAH! i should be able to have wifi always on without it using any battery. thats right. screw the laws of thermodynamics, it should run for weeks even! having to toggle a button is just way too much work for me!

I partly agree with you. But we lack the battery technology to do all that. Not having enough signal coverage alone is enough to drain your battery. In some ways, you adjust yourself so as to keep using the phone for longer periods of time.
I must disagree with the fact that all the above i mentioned are garbage though. I am happy that i figured out a combination that will save me huge amounts of battery. I can still do all the heavy use i need, when i need it. With smart-phones there are options in settings to let you do just that. No-one forces you to do all that, just as no-one forces me to leave everything on.
Having lost 30% battery in 2+ days, means that theoretically if i kept using it like that i would get 7 days of one charge. For example, i know when i will receive an email, from who and when he/she expects me to reply. I hardly get any emails that require immediate response. If someone expects me to reply instantly, they send an sms, or call. Both of the options work fine using gsm only mode.
I also don't find important being logged in facebook 24/7. I 'll log when i have a break, before sleeping and when i wake up. Need to check the weather before leaving for work? Tap on wifi, wait 2 secs for it to connect, click refresh on the widget, done. It doesn't take more than 10 seconds.
I don't rush to turn off wifi or anything. I just use the battery juice and the phone's cpu on demand. The note is indeed a smart-phone, but with all it's features it is reaching laptop territory. I find that treating it as a laptop works better for my needs. Then again, thats just me. If your lifestyle demands all of the note's features on 24/7, then by all means leave them on. There are external 18000 mAh battery packs you can grab.

I'm running Cassies's Lite ROM and I can get between 5 hours and one week on a single charge. Just do everybody a favor and understand that this thing can go into sleep state for days.
If I leave it alone, nothing playing or syncing on the background I lose about 1-2% in 8 hours, so this could go on for days, even a week if you don't touch it.
Of course if the screen is on for only 15 minutes on 2 days, you're not going to have much power used.
During calls screen is off, yesterday I did a 1 hour call and lost less than 10% battery. So you can make several calls on 2 days and lose litlle charge.
If you play a 3D game with screen on at full brightnees, you'll deplete the battery in 5 hours.
It's no difficult to understand. battery life depends on what you do with the thing. Whenever the screen is on, it will consume power. How much depends on the brightness level and the color of the pixels displayed.
Syncing facebook / twitter / e-mail through 3G takes a lot of power too, specially when you're on a low signal area.

Anybody noticed the difference charging the phone while off versus charging it while on.
It looks to me charging while off makes the phone battery last much longer
it also takes much longer time to charge

Yes thats a fact, it also happens with my girlfriend's galaxy s2.. With my note the other day, found out that even plugged by usb to the pc with intensive using, wasn't enough to charge the battery % and actually it was decreasing..

My old iPhone 4 did that . I was downloading an app while having it plugged in into the wall outlet, and the battery just started going down (600+ meg download).
The note is a sloooowww charging device, that's for sure.

i always get over 2 days life out of mine. i never use wifi and i have gps on all the time. But what i do is i have the screen to auto and i use the stock task manager widget. With applications i always use the back button instead of home which 90% of the time closes the app. As a browser i use opera mobile as this has an exit button too. keeping running apps to a minimum seems to help my battery las well.

I'm getting amazing battery life.
And still going strong 11hrs with somewhat light usage and it's nowhere near 50% battery yet hehehe

i can get around 5 hours display time, wich is faaaaar better than sgs2. During the night the power consumption is 1% per 5 hours with wireless off or 1%/hour with wireless on. I'm on Rocket rom v12 which rocks!

I'm getting 3.5 days on a charge with moderate use.
I have 4 email accounts that are polled every 60 minutes.
I make a few calls a day and use the browser a little.
What seems to help is doing a force stop on apps that I'm not using like AP Mobile and Yahoo Finance.
Also, I am runnning KL7.

With light usage, few sync's a few calls ((4-5 min) some texts and notes and few minutes of gaming.. I get a around with 16+ hours of usage easily. I'm happy with the battery and the Note can definitely get on with a more aggressive battery usage...

Owners: How long does your battery last?

How long does your Galaxy S battery lasts when APN is enabled?
Bought mine at Singtel and my Galaxy S came with a G7 battery...
my battery lasts barely a day.. I need to turn off APN so it can last longer.
I also installed Task Panel X to kill the running apps which I think is using my Data (if I didn't turn of APN).
I'm curious about these 3 apps, they always runs again even if I killed them using Task Panel
1) SNS -> Phonebook & Facebook integration, even if I disabled the auto sync and turn off Sync in the Power Control Widget.
2) My Uploads -> I'm not uploading anything..
3) com.sec.android.app.samsungapps.una -> what is this?
4) Feeds and Updates -> even if I'm not using this widget.

Im guesing that is touch wizz
once I got all apps installed (coming over from G1) it get very bad, barely get through a full day, I can see it ticking down at times.....cant seem to track down the culprit apps though
I woke up at 6am this morning, got low batter warning at 10am this morning wtf! (first day of having the phone).
Hope it gets better....
Mine is still showing about 1/4 charged after 24 hours of light use.
Been useing it for a few days now and most off time got BT and wifi is on from time to time at home and work to speed things upp, and also every morning/night on my way to work play music. And use mail, sms and call for quite a bit every day, and on the night when i go to bed i got around 20-30% left. I take it off like 7 at the morning and i put it in charger at around 22-23 so should say battery is quite nice so far.
mine has great battery too.. but I don't have 3g yet
either way even if my internet is closed, many of the apps you mentioned still run out of nowhere.
Once we get root we'll be able to disable them via the application "Autostarts"

battery life huh..
i listen to music.. search the web.. read pdf's.. calls.. gaming (tangram pro).. play with the interface..
all in all.. battery kinda sucks.. i always carry with me the Gata USB cable so that I can charge at work.
i travel for 1.5 - 2 hours to work and i can manage to get the battery nearly half once i reach work after using the phone (no calls).
hopefully we will see high capacity battery for the phone like 3500mAh - 3800mAh..
oh yeah, someone said that you need to drain and charge it 5 times to get the battery working at 100% capacity.. not sure though.. and haven't tried.. but will try eventually.. hehehe

I'm not comfortable rooting that way. I remember it was easier before :/ ..
I have to say my battery life has been pretty good. I didnt charge the phone when I got it like some have said you should do, it arrived with 40% battery and lasted about 6 hours of constant use. The next day it lasted just shy of 24 hours and then with medium use im getting about 32 hours out of it. Today im on 71% after 12 hours of use. I expect I can get 2 full days out of it if I could leave the phone be for more than 5 minutes but that screen is too hard to resist. This is with push email always on, twitter updating every 15mins, stocks updating every 30mins and a live wallpaper. The screen does have the brightness turned all the way down though, I only bump it up when in direct sunlight.
About 50% longer then my Desire lasted with the same Apps.
Any ideas on why mine would be so low? Have been awake for 3.5 hours now, and am on 63% battery. Light internet surfing on wifi for some of it, but a lot of it was just standby...

Have a look at what your wifi is set for connecting and downloading emails.
Mine was set to connect every 5mins and I didn't get round to checking this feature for the first couple of days.
During that time my phone needed charging twice a day.
Ithen changed the timing from every 5mins to every 1hr (and nothing else), now instead of charging 2 x daily I get a whole days use with some to spare.....
When the machine lays idle wifi is the biggest battery eater.

My initial thoughts would be something to do with the fact, you are charging through USB, and not the mains power supply.
I have found USB, never fully charges my phones, and even when it says 100%, it very quickly drops below, after some use.
thanks for your thoughts guys.
My initial charge was on USB, and I was using it while charging (and unplugged it once or twice), maybe it's just got bad calibration or something as a result and thinks its running low when it isn't? dont know if this is likely or not.
My second charge was via the mains power, with a UK->Australia power adapter.
THen next one was USB
Then last night I charged it using my girlfriends iPhone power adapter (which is a USB -> mains, so I plugged my cable into it).
My exchange email is every 5 minutes, but I kind of want that to stay like that, I might try moving it if I can't think of anything else. Gmail I think can't do anything but push?
my wifi is connected most of hte day, at home and at work, though I just turned off the setting for alerting for new networks, maybe that will help?

Happened to me before.. even if I turned off "Sync" in the "Power Control Widget" or setting the phone on 2G Mode.
but I found a possible solution.
Try to un-check the "Background Data" under "Settings - Accounts and Sync". I noticed that the phone still uses data even if I killed all the tasks. Also make sure that you don't have any auto sync settings like "Feeds and Updates", Facebook, Tweeter, etc.. (if you don't need it)
*Android Market needs this "Background Data", it will ask you to turn it on. Just turn it off after..
Startup auditor doesn't require root and seems better then autostarts . I Just bought it. works great ....just an fyi

I too have the Sanny Galaxy S from Singtel but i flashed the euro fw to get rid of all the bloatware.
Could go into the location menu under settings and turn off the 'get position via wireless networks' option as i find that with that on, the wifi keeps turning itself on although the icon does not pop up in the task bar.
Battery lasts about a full day for me so far with moderate usage (about 1hour of music, 30mins web browsing, push Gmail and Hotmail + Exchange syncing every hour)

Battery sucks, so I went to the Sprint store and...

I know that battery life has been a hot topic among EVO 4G users. I have seen both sides of the spectrum with some getting an entire day or more out of their phones, while some, like myself, see 5-7 hours at the most. I finally went to my local Sprint Store/Repair Center where I was told that my battery life was "normal" and that EVO users should "except to charge your phone two or three times a day". Then the rep handed me a spare battery at no charge to me and told me to have a nice day.
So, here's the deal. I am a non-rooted, non-anything user. Is the only way to see a 24 hour charge to root my phone and flash a custom ROM? He did mention that Froyo would "increase your battery life a lot". Whenever that's going to happen. Sorry to add another thread on battery life, but I want to make an informed decision, as well as know if this rep was just brushing me off with 5-7 hour being "normal" and then handing me an extra battery for free.
So you got a free battery and all it cost you was having to talk to a fool? Sounds good to me.
I routinely charge every other night with my moderate usage. 5-7 hours would only make sense if I was streaming Pandora all day with 1 bar.
5-7 hrs? are you constantly downloading things? heavy usage? or just on stand-by most of the time? if your using your phone casually, like 3-4 calls ~ 15-20 min each call and have emails coming in at about 2-3/hr and you surf the web about 1hr/day on your phone... 5-7 hrs is not very good... usually you would need to make calls that are 30+ min with heavy browser usage and be in a really ****ty signal area while playing games and texting every 5minutes for you to get such ****ty battery life... there are a lot of forums out there with tips/tricks in improving battery life so don't expect people to start posting them here as there are THOUSANDS of posts on battery life on androidcentral.com and other such sites...
good luck... you should be able to get at least 12hrs on one charge with little to moderate usage -- again google and read for forums out there as there is a TON of information.
I'm curious, are you in a 4G or 3G area? if you have 4G on where there is no 4G, your phone will constantly search for a 4G signal, same with wifi. I find that 3G is pretty fast where I live. 1.2MB down. so I never really turn on 4G or wifi. I've been getting about 14-20 hrs depending on use, but that was only the few times I made it through a day without plugging it in to add music, or try to root it (without success) and stuff. today I unplugged it at 9:40 am, and have been using it pretty heavy. about 15 minutes of streaming video, 45 minutes of music playback, 35 minutes of internet use, constant messaging, some pictures, google talk, fringe running, as well as qik in the background, actually all kind of apps pop up in the background. I am at 50% battery at 5:00 pm. I think that's not bad compared to the N1 I just sold. I will say that I think Advanced Task Killer, from the markets probably helps the battery life. I highly recommend it. make sure you set it up to auto kill apps in the background. I think I get a couple of extra hours this way.

CHARGING EVO BATTERY FOR MAXIMUM LIFE:
You can charge your battery the following way to see if that helps improve the battery life on your device.
1.Connect the phone to the charger and charge the device until the LED turned green with the phone powered ON
2.Disconnect the phone, and power it OFF.
3.Reconnect the phone to the charger, and charge the device until the LED turns green again.
4.Disconnect the phone, power it ON and then power it OFF.
5.Reconnect the phone to the charger and charge until the LED turns green again.
6.Power ON and use.
My battery appears to have the same issue as well. My backlight is at 8%, auto sync is disabled for all services, always on mobile data is disabled, my network is set to CDMA, I'm not overclocked at all. I've done all the other battery saving tricks and I've done all the battery charging tricks.
I played Raging Thunder 2 for less than half an hour this afternoon, and my battery dropped down to 58%. I'm aware that games are pretty intensive, but isn't this a bit much?

I'm not a "heavy user" and I turn off all sync and radios until I need them. In this state the phone will still recieve phone calls and text msgs. I turn on either wifi or mobile network access when I want to surf and enable bluetooth when I drive to connect to hand free in the car. I turn everything off when I'm done using each. I have all the power widgets right on my home screen so it only takes a second to turn on/off as needed. Using this way I have gone over 3 days before charging several times. I know this doesn't work for everyone, but I'd rather decide when I'm going to use my phone for what than to be at the beck and call of my phone. YMMV

Why don't you just use it normally and charge each night?
Just lazy.
Yeah, I've done all the tips and tricks and charge with power on the power off and charge, wash, rinse, repeat. Nothing works. I'm curious to see if the "free" battery they gave me will last longer.
I was in the same boat as you.
I have a fix and it should work.
turn on always on mobile data and enable auto sync
I posted a thread about getting rediculous battery and someone told me to do that and it worked.
go to settings all the way to the bottom to about phone Ans then choose battery. I bet ur up time and away time are the same. if they are that means something is keeping your phone on even tho the screen is off. doing what I told you above with a restart should fix the problem. also when you restart it its not going to instantly go to sleep leave your phone for like an hour and then check the up and awake time and it should be different. hope that helps.
and enable data when roaming.
Without specifics about what you have the phone doing and what kind of signal you have at home/work/etc, this is a totally irrelevant discussion. In my experience, the only thing that actually kills the battery quickly on the Evo or any other phone is poor cell signal.
I get well over a day on my evo... Running the netarchy kernel along with setcpu profiles. I have my phone set to clock to a max of about 384mhz when the phone screen is off.
I did the battery recharge trick and it helped a lot. I also have my display timeout set to 30 seconds.
5-7 hours before i rooted i would get 10-12 easy since rooting and loaded the.bakedsnackes rom i get avg 19 hours
sent with my evo from a secret place
Dump the Mail app and use Gmail to pop your accounts
If you are using the MAIL app that comes with the OS, that is likely the culprit. Especially if you are syncing more that one account. That can kill the battery very fast.
**try using the gmail app, and set it up so that it pops your pop mail accounts for you and pushes them to your phone. Then disable the built-in mail app and never use it again. This alone should double your battery life. It worked on the Hero and it works in the Evo.**
Do you by any chance use Yelp? I did an experiment last week with Yelp. Without the Yelp service running in the background, I would lose less than 8% of my battery overnight. With the Yelp service in the background, I lost about 50%. I've emailed Yelp to see if they can disable the Yelp service if I don't login to my Yelp account through the app.
Putting my phone on wifi made it so in the morning (4 hrs of low signal then to 50% battery), I put ti on the school's wifi and it was 80%.

I would avoid doing this. Lithium-Ion Batteries (found in the Evo and almost all other phones and laptops) can only go through a certain number of charge cycles. This method will not help prolong battery life.

Hi.
Since buying my phone I have been suffering with serious battery issues and been following steps and advice within these forums to try and combat it. The other night I took the phone to bed on a full charge and when I got up at least 8 hours later, my battery was at 60 odd %, and has been like that and worse sometimes since buying it, and have had to put it on charge every night as throughout the day it would drain considerably.
I started the thinking that perhaps the battery was faulty, I did get my phone second hand at a bargain price so had started wondering if that was why, and as nothing I've read on here seemed to be helping, that had cemented my thinking.
One of the last things I did before going to bed last night was to remove Facebook using Titanium backup, and changed the quicklaunch bar for the Beautiful widgets, widgets (wifi, BT ect). Woke up this morning to find my battery at 88%, it was at about 94% when I finally stopped using the phone, so I'm quite a happy bunny this morning.
Perhaps some might think it's still drained a bit too quick?, but as it's clearly a vast improvement, I'm more than happy with that right now.
I find it odd that so many X10 users are having problems with their battery performance. My stock Canadian (RB20) X10 lasts over 3 full days if I don't use wi-fi or voice much --granted, for those who make lots of calls and suck up 3G data, no phone will yield over 3 days per charge. I haven't uninstalled the standard apps either and have my screen brightness at maximum all the time (though I always immediately shut it off when not in use).
Just making a few calls, sending a few texts, checking my e-mail a couple of times per day on wi-fi, and playing about 2 hours of music, my battery drops 10-15% only.

It is strange, and stranger that a little bit of tweaking seems to sort it out. I'm going to see how it goes and try not to charge it over the next day or so. It's only 10 mins or so that it's dropped to 87%, which as I've said is a considerable difference to what it's usually been.
i also find it interesting that people are having problems with battery life, im coming from a samsung i8000 Omnia II and before that the i900 Omnia I, my omnia 2 did have better battery life as i didnt use as much of the phone as i do now, bearing in mind with my omnia II i made about 20-30 calls anywhere between 1 and 40 min each, i sent about 30 sms/mms, checked my emails (not push option) a bit of internet and maybe hour of gaming and my battery would be at 40% at the end of the day 8am-11pm). now with my SE X10 i do all the same but i get my emails checked automatically every hour, weather every hour, same amount of calls and sms/mms, play games for about hour, check the news blogs, find something thru google maps or 'layar' app, download a few wallpapers, maybe update apps, and i have 30% left by 6pm so its not as good time wise as my previous phone but i use the phone more that i did before, and that is something people dont realise is that they are actualy using the phone alot more, the iphone had a similar problem, APPLE didnt expect people to spend so much time on it, but id suggest that if your at the office or in the car, just plug it in for a bit it will make a difference
just my 2 cents and observations
i set facebook to never update automatically, so it does not drain my battery. I noticed that the sync with google calendar drains the battery really fast. I had the google calendar auto sync checked and there was only 56% left every morning from a 100% charged battery before going to bed. After I unchecked that option it only drains about 3% now.

Unless your Google Calendar is changing I don't see why it's syncing?
I have background data on, 4 email account polling every 10 minutes, 1 push email account, Twitter, Facebook and I'm dropping 1% per hour unplugged.

Don't take this the wrong way but if you don't make calls, no WiFi and it sounds like you're not using much 3G, few text and email a couple of times a day .... sort of should last long, No?
Kind of like if I put gas in my car and don't drive it

Thanks, but no thanks, the thing I love about the Xperia is it's sleekness, so the last thing I'd want to do is stick an ugly ass extended back cover on it. If push came to shove I'd just buy another battery and rotate them, but as I seem to have sorted my issue out it looks like I won't have to.

That was my point. It should last, yet some here are reporting that their X10 loses an insane percentage every hour without any activity.
For people having problems with the xperia battery life, two questions:
1. Are you using moxier mail?
2. Are you using SE built-in flickr account?
If you are using either, try turning them off (delete the flickr account from phone and restart the device) and share what the progress is. I would be very interested to know the before-and-after difference, and am very hopeful you find your issues a thing of the past with this change . Lemme know.
For email you can still use the other built in apps, not to mention K-9 mail.
My solution.
Hi,
My phone would burn 10% per hour, without use.
I went on holiday with it and it suddenly behaved itself. I put this down to the Roaming preventing data access.
On my return to the UK I've loaded an app called 'Data on Demand' from the market. It prevents data access when the screen is off. (default settings)
My phone will now last 4 days with my light usage.
If your only getting one day, give this a try, If I remember correctly it was free too.
Kind Regards,
Paul.
I have wifi and BT off, GPS on and I use 3G.
Thanks for the tip Paul.. I'll give that a try.. sounds good..
Guys its a smartphone with a 1 ghz processor and a large screen. I dont get why people think the battery is supposed to last forever. Anything over 20 hours is great in my opinion. If you want a powerful smartphone, you WILL have to charge it every night. Get used to it. I dont see why this is an issue.
I guess the issue is the relative difference people have in battery life compared to each other

I've tried Data on Demand on my X10i and it seems not to turn data off properly in automatic mode. Could it be a problem with Switcpro widgets? Do you use this one too?

No I don't, but I do find a re-boot after charging helps. I guess there must be some naughty app/service in there somewhere.
The effect I get using Data on Demand is dramatic. I'm hoping others will see this result too.
Regards, Paul.
48-hours, over two dozen short calls, handful of SMS texts, some wi-fi, screen brightness maxed, 4 hours of music, still over 25% charge. I didn't use data though, but even if I had, I still could have lasted the 2 full days on a single charge.
If your X10's battery is not lasting, then you are doing something wrong, or there is a problem with the battery/phone.
Thanks for the heads up, Paul, will let you know if it improves the battery life on my x10i 026 rooted.

So aside from the WiFi you used it like a Moto Razr, yup it does play mp3's
It seems that you're comparing your non-smartphone type usage to users having battery problems using all of the features. You then go on to say the users are doing something wrong. Which is what? Using the features of the X10? I imagine if I charged the phone, turned it off, it would last for days
GPS ON
WiFi off
Bluetooth ON
3G ON
Background Data ON
Gmail syncing mail, reader, calendar, contacts
Twitter and Facebook both running
Emails 20
SMS 10
Talk time 90 minutes
Screen at 50%
Playing online Poker for 2 hours
Reading XDA Forums 30 minutes
NewsRob 20 minutes
Market for 15 minutes
Total screen on time about 4.5 hours
This is in 10 hours, battery remaining 62% ... it's a 2600mAh extended battery.
Yes, I actually use the features of the X10.
I'm sorry but it's getting annoying hearing people say that they're getting great battery life with the original battery but .... do this ... turn off all of the features.
Here's the bottom line. If you use the features to the max then the battery will drain.
I wouldn't have even commented on your comment but when you said "then you're doing something wrong" .... well ... I think you"re wrong on this issue.

I dont get it........BATTERY DOESNT LAST FOR ****!

So i noticed on my stock battery i get about 10 hours of battery life, when im really not even using it at all besides checking it on my breaks or lunch. For instance i had a full charge at 4:07 pm , disconnected and now have a 70percent charge at 5:44..? really WTF is going on with this phone..? I havent done **** on it but browse. I even bought the verizon extended battery and that thing doesnt last as long as i thought, it dies down in about 8-10 hours tops as well.. Is there something im missing here?
I dont run gps often and neither wifi or bluetooth. Just texting and getting online every now and then....
i do have advanced task manager and do notice almost every program running all the time although i kill it when the programs when i jump on my phone....is this normal? wtf is going on with this thing?

Check for things updating frequently like twitter. Also don't kill them apps they will restart using battery to start it. Just let them run, they actually hibernate till needed.. don't close them.. that's probably killing your battery.
There is a lot of bloat ware that runs in back ground unless you root and uninstall. That is the one think I hate about these phones. I wish I could uninstall the bloat ware with out rooting. Anyway download advanced task killer and set it to kill programs whenever screen is blank. It will save some battery life. I get a day out of mine easy and I talk for at least an hour text at least 20+ a day, have it auto check every 5 min for 2 emails and have quite a few widgets running and surf at least 10 minutes...
I was really hating the battery at first. So much that I bought two non oem batteries from ebay. However, since I rooted AND loaded leaked froyo AND loaded deodexed, re rooted froyo leak through koush's recovery, I am getting through the day with 30% or more when I plug back in at night. The only extra charge is in the car dock for 30 minutes on my ride home from work. Try those steps, and rename bloat. Get rid of atk. I get much better battery life without it.
Just my experience, hopefully you figure it out. I'm a fairly heavy user and love this device.

I have had battery issues in the past. Now I am making it through the day comfortably. I am at 12 hours and 45 minutes and have 40% battery left. That is with wifi on all day. I am not using any task killers. All I did was calibrate the battery. Here is the link I used and it works great. DO NOT DO THE VARIATION. IT DIDN'T WORK FOR ME. Do the long version.

Look. The real issues are simple, the display is quite large and pulls more backlight than it needs. Not only that, but the CPU pulls more power than it needs too. I turned off automatic backlight and set it to the lowest setting. I rooted my phone and use setCPU in order to scale back the processor when it's not needed.
Also, web browsing on a 3G network is much more energy consuming. It's just a fact.
As for the apps, they activate because you have widgets on your home screen. If you want to reduce the running programs, replace unneeded widgets with shortcuts. The less programs running, the less power needed for RAM and CPU function.
What do I get in return for all of my modifications? I can use my phone for about 2 days without having to charge.
I can easily go 48 hours on my extended battery with the right settings... YEs this is with 3G on all of the time.
SetCPU is underclocking or "ON DEMAND", I have deleted most apps that come with the phone that one would never use, backlight is on low usually...
If you are sure that you have all of these settings set and still aren't seeing improvement, go to verizon and have them replace your batt.....
I can go 48 hours on the extended battery and I'm not using SetCPU and I typically leave the screen on auto brightness (though I guess I occasionally turn it down).
Yesterday's usage:
Unplugged the phone around 7:30am. Read emails for about 20 minutes in the morning, checked the weather. Listened to some music on my bluetooth headphones on the way to work, maybe 30 minutes. Started up Appbrain on the phone and downloaded/installed the apps over 3G. At lunch, I listened to more music on the way home, browsed the internet for maybe another 30 minutes while I ate, and listened to music on the way back (all bluetooth).
Showed a few coworkers some of my apps, so another 20 minutes or so with the screen on. Occasional email/text throughout the rest of the day.
At home, I sporadically pick up the phone and browse the internet/read emails/send texts. Easily a solid hour+ of browsing. Played a couple games and downloaded a couple more apps.
When I went to bed and plugged the phone in, around 11pm, my battery was at 50%.
More information about my phone:
- The only radio I toggle on and off is Wifi. Everything else stays on all the time. Wifi goes on when I get home.
- Widgets that update themselves are: a calendar widget, a Google Tasks widget, a sports score widget and a weather widget. All widgets with configurable timers are set to update in 30 minute intervals.
- I have ATK installed but only to let me manually kill processes, it has no auto killing intervals set.
- I am running Launcher Pro Plus. Before I installed LPP, I cleared off my entire Blur desktop - there is nothing on it.
- I am rooted and have removed most of the common bloatware - nothing crazy, just the things like CityID, Amazon apps, Blockbuster, etc.
Hope that information helps someone.
Speaking of extended battery and long life, I just got 34 hours out of mine and it was only down to 30%.
I'm using Juice Defender, toggling data for 2m every 15m AND completely shutting off data when I sleep, 1a-7a.
I don't have a lot of background updating apps either, that seems to be a big thing. After figuring out what works and what doesn't regarding battery life, I can use my phone as I please and not worry about batt life.
This thread is crazy my battery last all day and im on the internet atleast 4 hours a day and receive and make multiple phone calls, and text and stuff [email protected] 12.5 hours with 60% of battery left. I did condition the battery when i first got the phone i let it fully discharge 5 times

he said "****"....lol....
Bought the 1750mah extended battery. First 6 days the battery didn't last that long but the instructions did say do 8 full charges which last about 7-8 hours. I did that and over the weekend I saw awesome battery life.
Unplugged at 8am. At 10 pm I was at 40% life. That was with some light web browsing, book reading.
One thing that makes a HUGE difference. Are you in a constant 3g area? If your phone drops to 2g/1g and it can't find a signal, it will burn through your battery like crazy.
My work building is a verizon void and I get virtually no signal. I get in at 7am. By the time I leave at 4 pm, I'm down to 15% battery. I do not use a task killer. I keep my screens to a minimum. The only thing that updates are facebook posts and beautiful widget which updates every 3 hours. I use the smart battery profile.
Don't you a task killer they kill your battery faster. This is not a windows phone, its based off of linix. applications don't stay running in the background, they hibernate so there not using a lot of resources. when you kill them there just going to restart all at the same time, which slows your phone down, and kills your battery. I was getting about 11 hours on one charge using a task killer, now using it more im getting at-least 14-15 hours. plus if you have your task killer set to high it will randomly reboot your phone, even when your using it....
I dropped my task killer and my battery life is now better. I've had my X off the charger for 6 hours and only recently got to 80%.
My battery life is amazing. I left for work around 6 am yesterday with 100%. Through out the day I talk for about 2 hours, used the internet for about 3 hours straight, listed to music for 1 hour, pandora for 1 hour, and navigation for almost an hour. My battery was at 20% at 11 pm.

I have noticed a huge improvement in battery after installing leaked froyo. No task killer here but I do have watchdog installed. Haven't had it activate yet though. No widgets on blur screens and running launcherpro. Love this phone with froyo. Would have returned it otherwise.

I get 38 hrs out of my oem and 48 hrs out of my extended battery. I do have Tranquilty rom on the phone with no blur at all.I keep my sync off and just manually sync for my emails and i have no widgets besides the wheather genie set to refresh every 6 hrs.Im on the cell alot too.So i am very pleased with my battery life .

anyone that can help me with battery life?

thiis thing dies on me really quick, at home not as bad when I'm on wifi, but i left this morning from my house, and by the time I got to work 45 minutes later i'm at like 90% and i've done nothing on the phone, not a thing, no text, no voice calls. time without signal is 0.
then of course I get to work and time without signal jumps to like 22%, but still, my blackberry didn't go dead in half a day. i'm running the mixup undervolted kernal and the epic experience rom.
I do run gps and normal phone settings but turning them off is really not an option, especially for my wife that just needs a phone that works and isn't dead before she is out of work, and she doesn't even use the phone.
am I doing something wrong or is the battery life really this crappy?
and it was worse before the new kernal on DI18, and way worse before that.
i use the same set up i got 10 hours under pretty use
try turning gps off at work
So what are you leaving on? 4g? Gps? WiFi? I found that using black wallpaper helps.
wifi and gps are always on, it seems its TWS that is killing it. at like 22% right now. battery is down to 83% right now 2 hours off charger. no voice calls or text calls.
If you are getting a tws of 50% then put your phone into airplane mode for about 10 seconds and then switch it back, you will see a dramatic decease in tws

Here's a few things you can do ...
1) If you have Sprint service in most places, turn off roaming (Settings, Call settings, System select, Sprint). This will disable roaming period so that all roaming services are disabled (i.e. you won't ever see the data roaming guard).
2) Download JuiceDefender beta (this turns off all data, i.e. Wifi / 3G, whenever your phone's screen is off, if you purchase UltimateJuice with it, you can schedule it however you want, and you can choose to allow some apps to always allow data to go through). This saves me a LOT of battery since my screen is usually off.
3) Try the TWS hack mentioned in the earlier post, it should be fixed in DI18, but some people are still seeing high numbers there.
4) If you're rooted, get an app like Autostarts and disable the DRM service from ever running. This was found to be a battery killer.
The biggest battery drainer of them all is the GPS, and then 3G. If you can minimize your uses with those, you will maximize battery life. Also, use Wifi in areas that have it because Wifi hardly drains battery at all compared to 3G. I haven't seen any kernel really that gets much more battery life than stock, so doing these things will help. I love the Epic, but the battery life is a real downer for me too. I've gotten a full day's use (medium use) at times, while some days it hardly lasts at all.
Yes do the airplane mode trick and turn off gps if you are not using it and DO NOT USE JUICE DEFENDER i get 45 hours battery life without it. that app runs constantly in the background and uses more battery. Juice defender is for lazy people that dont know how to find these data and sync settings that are already on the phone or you can download an app that will let you toggle whatever setting you need. Set emails to sync once an hour and if it is really a priority then go into the email account and push refresh.
If you are really getting 45 hours of battery while actually using your phone then will you please share all of the settings that you have that give you this kind of battery life

I wondered if that would do anything. Considering how AMOLED works, dark themes and wallpapers *should* help battery life similar to reducing brightness.
Auto-Sync does some mean damage if your settings are too frequent, too. Try not to use Facebook/Twitter/Myspace integration, if possible, or disable them from syncing automatically, and sync them yourself when you feel the need.
Okay I don't know exactly what I did/didn't do but my battery problem seems to be greatly improved. Lets start with my details. Before 2 days ago. No matter what my use my battery drain would be approx 6-8% an hour. If I took my phone off the charger at 11am by 4pm I would be around 60%. GPS/4g/wifi off. Screen brightness set to lowest. tws not too bad. Using both the tws trick and drm stopped. Usually 2 or 3 phone calls 5-10 texts 5-10 minutes of browsing. I had a task killer installed but never used it to kill tasks just as an app switcher. Even after the di18 update no major difference. So the other day I downloaded an app called system panel. Another task manager. I deleted the task killer widget on my home page but no the app. The first day I took my phone off the charger used it for about an hour then put it back on the charger for about 15 minutes. When I took it off the charger it was at 96%. I opened system panel and killed all apps (necessary services/apps restarted immediately) did tws trick and drm kill. Same use as always after 8 hours my battery was at 80% a 16% drop. That's 2% an hour. The next day I deleted my task killer and over the same period of time I went from 96% to 83% (13% lose over 8 hrs) Only a little over 1% lose an hour. The only difference that I am aware of was the deletion of the task killer widget and then the app completely.

Ditto, I'd like to hear what you're doing too ... even when I do not TOUCH the phone, I cannot get 45 hours. I think you're being a bit optimistic here.
Lmao No. Since di18 it has been great. I use my phone for a lot of stuff too. I have a live wall paper and rss feeds that update. email is set to once an hour. Now dont get me wrong if i play a game then it will suck my battery pretty good like 5% for ten minutes. i have a widget for sync settings. im rooted with ALL SPRINT apps removed i think thats the biggest thing. dont leave gps or other on if you are not using it. i do not have drm removed. i use full brightness. i talk a few times a day and dozens of text and web surfing. no juice defender or task killers. The object for me was to not have any unneccessary stuff run when it doesnt need to. so the phone is set to come alive when the screen is on not off. Check ALL APP and WIDGET SETTINGS FOR HOW OFTEN THEY UPDATE. I DO MEAN ALL. GO THROUGH EVERY APP AND CHECK THEIR SETTINGS ALSO the biggest drain is make sure you sign out gtalk or it will just constantly run. I shoulda posted my screen shot of battery life earlier sorry i will as soon as it reads 1d21h again. prolly tomorrow afternoon.... Rooted, cwm, galaxy rom and kernel, blue minimalism theme

i do the airplane trick, problem is it seems, when im on wifi, the life is great, battery is perfect, as soon as you go to 3g, it goes to crap, plus the service where I work is spotty as well. I don't know what to do, seriously I can't go through 2 years of great cell service that I can't use because the battery is dead. I mean if I could get through 10 hours it wouldn't be bad, but as it is now, i'm lucky to squeak through about 8 hours. and I have the mixup kernal that is undervolted and supposedly already messing around with the cpu. usually on 3g, no matter where I am pretty much I"m at like 10-20% TWS.
tws is 50% for me. just stop the data with sync settings then it has no reason to draw more. my house and school have terrible service. you are only losing battery life due to data that is going really slow and it takes way more battery to accomplish. i keep wifi on all nite at my house but my sync settings are off. i do this so its not searching for 3g because i have an airrave and wifi. i used the di07 mixup and was not happy with it. galaxy roms have been the least buggy and very stable with the best battery life. That might be my opinion but also genius dog doesnt have an epic yet so i cant trust his stuff when he cant see the impacts with the kernels he is making. but he does know code i will tell you that.

Holy crap 8 hour battery life is really bad.
Do you have any apps syncing? A weak signal with an app syncing can have a devastating effect on the battery life.
In my school building I get 0-1 signal bars and once I use the stock email app to sync my email every hour with 3G on my battery life is probably a third as good.
How?

Yes do the airplane mode trick and turn off gps if you are not using it and DO NOT USE JUICE DEFENDER i get 45 hours battery life without it. that app runs constantly in the background and uses more battery. Juice defender is for lazy people that dont know how to find these data and sync settings that are already on the phone or you can download an app that will let you toggle whatever setting you need. Set emails to sync once an hour and if it is really a priority then go into the email account and push refresh.

Inside my building where I get a weak signal I turn off 3G and use the wifi to sync my apps regularly. I get a good wifi signal there.
If I can't get a good 3G signal in the building than there's not much I can do to my phone to make the 3G signal better (I think that's the cause for the battery drain).
