Got a Galaxy Tab 10.1 for Christmas, what do you do with your Tab? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

Loving this tablet so far, just don't know what else I should be doing with it. I feel like it's my myTouch 4G all over again, no idea what to. First thing I did was install Minecraft, but I want to know, what do you do with your Galaxy Tab? (Watching porn is not an acceptable answer)

I mostly use it for Netflix, YouTube, browsing, and gaming.

i got mine like, 2/3 hours ago ) i'm trying to test all the bits on this before flashing another rom on it (specially, because I haven't flashed a tablet ever) and i'm still trying to get KIES to work with this (though, i would only sync music, and i use doubletwist for that :d)

already rooted, gonna flash a ROM but I dont know what ROM to flash, all I really want is Cyanogenmod 9.

I only use it for Twitter | Facebook | Angrybirds nuffsaid'
If you use it for anything else , then idk .
oh and root it & add CWM & add a custom-rom .

Root it and add the ad-hoc wifi hack so you can tether to your droid.
As to what to do with it - ebooks. Isn't that what tablets were invented for? LOL

I got mine two-three days ago and first thing I did was root it, installed Overcome's ROM and then just messed with it a bit.
I usually tether my Galaxy S 4G, take my Tab everywhere I go & usually just browse the internet... Facebook, look on Engadget, games, and maybe some pr0n.
I'm starting to use it more than I use my phone, I lurve it. It's my life now!

Surfing and ebookreading. Watching tv shows and movies. Listening to music. Almost the same as on the sgs 1.
Gesendet von meinem GT-I9000

Apart from being connected to my inboxes and google reader, I found it great for "mobile" web-surfing with a bigger screen, e-books and pdf reading with repligo, note taking with writepad stylus and freenote.

I use it for my work.....marketing - photo and pdf presentations, keep marketing materials on them for my use, surf the net, read books via the Kindle reader app.

Mine has pretty much replaced my laptop, which is now consigned to mostly being a media server. The only thing I use mine for that hasn't been mentioned is Skype video calling and as a radio, I listen to shows on BBC iPlayer and TuneIn Radio.

I have mine running GalaxyTask 10.0 and I couldn't be happier. Absolutely amazing for a Honeycomb ROM.
Better than my HP Touchpad and all Gingerbread ROMs with the (equality) of Skyraider for the Thunderbolt phone.
Bedside book reader with Nook app (sideloading .epub), web browser, mail client, ski report viewer, Google Talk station, etc.

Running Galaxy Task as well and its a hell of a lot better than the stock ROM, if games could run smoothly then I would be perfectly happy with this tablet.

I do almost anything that I use my desktop/laptop for on my tab. GoToMyPC app connects me to my desktop at work for quick access to files or dropbox access to all my machines. I was like you when I first got mine...soon the question will be what do I NOT use the tab for!
Sent from my GT-P7510 using Tapatalk

I do almost everything except play MW3 and SWTOR on my tab. To the point I probably will go back to a blackberry because I don't use my phone for much, other than to settle arguments here and there with google.

I pretty much use mine for watching movies and web browsing. Netflix and VPlayer are my two movie apps

Skyfire Android beta now in marketplace

Works pretty good on Desire
and somehow they decided to only make it available to the country with access to paid apps. long live market enabled

Got it... will use it as my default for a while, see how it works out.
Does it do multitouch??
anyone care to post the apk? can't get it from the market....unfortunately i stay in australia where i have no chance to get alot of good apps...
Took it straight off, poor design and looks cheap...
lol....but it looks good on the video demo...just wanna try out playing flash on it.
it's clunky but...

...video playback is great. UI's a bit iffy, and the zoom (it does support multitouch) is in steps, but the killer feature is the video playback. Just tried some online content and it looked excellent - worth keeping just for that I think as an alternate browser.
yup, thats my point actually lol, just for the sake of the video playback...
someone please get me the apk =D
it's on the market now
ya i know its on the market if you read my previous post....
anyways i found where to download it =)

and if anyone wants a link to a great site with alot of movies and tv series then pm me =)
i just watched grey's anatomy on it, and tried to watch alien, =D works wonders all on my amazing HTC Desire wooohoo
I couldn't get nothing to play lol

skyfire 2 is brilliants. It is still beta so no true serverside flash rendering yet, but it works just like the default browser with multitouch and with compression tehnology. Loving it.
I tried this app for ages yesterday but could only get one site to actually play any flash videos which is kind of the point. The site was redtube purely for research purposes of course
Sites that wouldn't play include:
itv player
demand five
megavideo
quicksilverscreen
empflix
vho
Can someone post some good video sites that do work? This app has a lot of potential but at the moment it's not living up to it. It is in beta though and I hope it will improve over time.
It is a pretty good browser though with multi-touch. Another nice feature is one button "connect as" - you can choose Desktop, iphone or Android which can load a mobile version of a site (or not)
purely a personal feeling, but I think the stock browser is way better, for what matters miles ahead of every other phone I've tried.
still, a lot of options is always an excellent thing...
Sent from my HTC Desire using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
yes the stock is way better, just that it cant play flash video like skyfire period..
i tested megavideo, it works 1 out of 10times.....dont know why.......
there are other websites that are working and i watch a full movie of alien on it streaming on a website...=)
I might have been lucky, flash worked 9 out of ten times on stock browser for me. good to know I can rely on skyfire when problems happen however.
my 'mistrust' for skyfire comes from trying to use the last version on WinMo and finding it really slow compared to old versions. sort of different on modern devices...

Me too even the BBC site loads the video but you cannot click on the play button it just sits there at the first screen or am I doing something wrong
Flash didn't work at all for me on Skyfire. Pinch to zoom was terrible aswell, it has this weird "acceleration" which means it zooms for half a second after you stop moving your fingers which I hated. I uninstalled it for now as the stock browser seems far better.
i am playing flash videos that i can't play on the stock browser....skyfire works great for me...
maybe all the years of helping old ppl crossing the road finally pays off, i am getting a good return...

Galaxy Tab 10.1 very nice Honeycomb not so nice.

I think samsung did an awesome job with this tablet. Its beautiful and has the specs and is the best in the market. But for some reason I don't like using honeycomb so much. Its clunky, crashes, most apps are horrible, and it is not very customizable. I know it will evolve and be great, but today is mediocre.
its the same spec on the xoom and the asus and the gslate lol

Not sure which specs you are referring to but i think the OP is more talking to the design of the tablet which no one can deny is the best design on the market.
As far as HC itself: i had a Xoom for a week and felt underwhelmed by honeycomb. Its not that its bad, per se, but moreso that it just didn't fulfill me. That's why i am excited to see what Samsung does with the Touchwiz UX on this device. From the previews online, it looks to improve nearly all.aspects of Honeycomb. My only concern is the performance effect of TW.
Honeycomb is fine and dandy, but its a lot of eye candy. The best example is adding Widgets. I think they overcomplicated it, on the other hand I've been on android since 1.5 so i probably have a comfort zone that HC takes me out of.
With that said, i cannot wait to get one!

Exactly how I feel, the galaxy tab is amazing. I can't use honeycomb for more than a few days without getting bored. I wouldn't go out and buy a ipad, but its just so overcomplicated. Touchwiz could be the key, I am also interested in seeing what htc does with it.
I don't really have any issues with honeycomb and since the 3.1 update I haven't been having many crashes at all. what features do you think it's missing?
I know there aren't many apps available but for 90% of what I do with a tablet, I'm fine. Here's how I see the app situation
Great
Gmail
Maps
Youtube
Calendar
Pulse News
AccuWeather or WeatherBug for weather
Movies by Flixter
Splashtop for remote desktop - you'll have to buy this one but it works spectacularly on the tab
Good
Music
Browser
Google Books - I don't have access to paid books in canada and there's no sideloading. If I had one or both of these things, I'd say great
Kindle - UI could be a bit better but still pretty good
QuickOffice HD for word, excel, powerpoint - this is a paid app but it comes with the tab
FileManager HD for file management
Google Talk - file transfer would be nice but what's there now works quite well
Bad
Facebook
Twitter - tweetcomb works fine but they really need to update the official app
Something for wikipedia - the browser works fine but it would be nice to have a tablet optimized wikipedia app
XDA - works fine in browser
Skype - I'm super choked about the fact that micrsoft bought skype cause that means we'll never see a good skype app =[
so what else do you want? games, I guess? there are some good games already and there's more coming. So, for me, if they update the facebook app, I'll be pretty much fine with everything. Like I said, tweetcomb works fine and the browser works fine for wikipedia and xda

I guess you've got a point there. Canadian netflix is crippled to the point that it's basically useless and we don't even have hulu so I never considered those things. I did mean to mention skype but then I forgot. That is one I would really like but it's never going to happen now that skype is owned by microsoft.
I was having lots of issues with the browser until I got the 3.1 update but now it seems pretty good. Then again, I'm used to having things crash all the time because I'm a full time android developer. I get paid to try to make things crash so I'm so used to it now that I just click "force close" and then reopen it without even thinking about it.
as for games, I guess I have lower expectations. I'd much rather just play games on my xbox and there are a few good games for honeycomb so I'm happy with that. All the ones in tegra zone are pretty solid.
I had Asus transformer (before 3.1 upgrade) and returned it mainly due to:
- OS instability. I needed to restart the tablet every day because of unresponsive screen, etc. Could be due to transformer drivers also.
- Browser lag, esp. when browsing sites such as XDA developers
How is GT in these two aspects /w 3.1? I would love to get a new tablet, but can't be a beta tester for google after paying so much money.

The best thing is we can be subjective without jumping in eachothers arse. It will get better its just really young right now
I have been using 3.1 for over a month now and i don't have any problems with it, it runs very smooth on Xoom. No FC's, no crashes, no nothing, it just works.
I have been watching a lot of GT10.1 videos on Youtube and it doesn't seem as smooth as my Xoom. Home screen is lagging, FC's, selecting text in browser seems to be impossible, browser quick controls doest work and so on. Why is that?

changing the cpu scaling mode seems to help responsiveness. my galaxy tab is silky smooth the majority of the time. it has the hiccough every once in a while but usually gets right back on track. I haven't really seen any FC's(that I can remember) since updating to 3.1. selecting text in the browser isn't perfect but it works just fine for me. I do miss the quick controls though.. what's up with that?
We have a xoom at work.. I should really do some comparisons at some point

Did you update yours to 3.1?
I would have constant force closes on the browser market and keyboard but after the update I have not had any and everything is so,much s,ooother
Its quite a pain in the ass that we loyally buy the tab (10.1v) then have to still wait for the bloody update, when the new
customers get the update immediatly. On another note, get hacker keyboard, awesome kb for big screen tablets. Love the arrow keys.

I have a zoom and it has more force closures in the web browser than the zoom.
Its a tablet meant for entertainment, emails, app, and such. Right now honeycomb is just eye candy.
I have the Transformer and am thinking of changing over to the Galaxy Tab, mainly for the form factor. Looks to be very nice... However, I would miss the (in my mind) superior keyboard dock.
One of the things I do not like about the Transformer is the force closes on the Launcher that occur (sometimes multiple times a day) and the slow response when lifting the screen from the keyboard. It seems like it almost has to redraw the screens again.
I am guessing these are Honeycomb issues and not hardware issues.
Do any of you GTab 10.1 users experience launcher crashes or redrawing of the screens/widgets/shortcuts after not using for a couple of hours and then turning on again?
Thanks.

porn really? Sorry screen is too small for me. Use my 50" lcd for that. Forgot to put reading as an option lol... guess that'll count as other. Just find reading a book on a tablet or e reader to take a lot away from the experience of reading a book for me. I need a book book. If we could get a fully fuctional rom out there that'd be great. Just seems all the ICS roms and misc other ones floating around have one or two major bugs still.

wheres the "all of the above" option?
I bought mine with the intention of using it for school. A couple of the textbooks I needed were available in PDF form, and I actually saved money by buying a new gadget... win/win!
Realistically I've mostly been using it for development. I'm currently working on an app for tablets, and I don't have a tablet other than this one. I've also been trying to help out with the ICS development, and frankly this post is to help get me to the 10-post threshold so I can answer someone's question in a development thread (kind of silly if you ask me).

share what all things you can do with your atrix. let others know how you are using your device. guide them to unleash the beast inside their atrix.
i connect my atrix to usb hub, tv, pendrive, ext hdd, mouse and keyboard......

I'm kind of strange.........I use my Atrix as a phone!
I use it as a game console. connect it to my HDTV and use a wiimote classic to play snes. I also use it for Netflix and movies. Most recently I've been using it at work to save information quickly.
I use it to do my marketing homework cuz I'm cool like that.

I am now up to 7 months of using nothing but my atrix/lapdock when not in home/office.
This includes some long trips when I needed to be able to connect back to the office and do real work.
When out of touch I can do some dev locally on it (most of my work is just C code, fairly light weight). But in general I can just VPN home and all works fairly well.
Worst case is when I have to RDE into a Windoze VM back on my office system. Slow, but works.
Sometimes I even use it for phone calls

Well this is my first "power-phone" I've had. I don't consider my iPhone 3gs a power-phone. So tonight I will attempt to install backtrack Linux on it (Debian variant) for pen-testing remotely. Should be interesting. The hardware can BY FAR support it, and there are multiple ported arm versions available. Wish me luck. If anyone else has done it, regardless of distro please pm me you're experience!
I always use my Atrix to watch Despicable Me all over again!!
I use my Atrix as a pocket notebook (springpad), music player and mobile browser.
I also have offline navigation map installed, but never used it.

I run a debian made from scratch via debootsrap and it works fine and was fairly easy to do.
If you are just running this as command line (no X), it is fairly easy to do. Just follow any standard ubuntu chrooting guide (or look up "ubuntu on android"). From a 'droid terminal chroot over and you are there.
One catch, if you run as a non-root user you must be in grouup 3003 (it's in the 'droid kernel) to use IP sockets. 3004 to use raw sockes, and 3001 if you care about bluetooth (took me an entire day to find that comically stupid issue).
If you need an X interface, there are 2 ways to go. Either use the Moto webtop ubuntu to get X up, then chrrot over to your stuff over. Or run a VNC server in your 'nux and use the android VNC viewer.
As I presume you know what you are doing on the linux side, this will not be difficult.
There are a few threads over in the dev section that go into a lot more detail.
Design icons in inkscape? Build websites? Contact anyone any time? Considering its 960 landscape it also allows you to easily browse almost any webpage. Its a damn awesome phone.
I just wish they'd done webtop right as opposed to than weird virtual thing its doing. Ubuntu screams on a 1ghz processor with 1gb ram. Webtop however sort of whimpers =/
Needs room to grow I guess.

Thanks for the advice your setup looks like exactly what i need. Command prompt and a root user, the rest is trivial and ill play with it for giggles. Thanks again for the reply.

Hrm.. webtop seems to run nice for me. Streaming movies or youtube is lag free. My vnc sessions seem fine. Not sure. I am writing some more advanced html5 web apps to test with webtop to see how well it utilizes the newer functions. But then again it is firefox, i expect it to pass with flying colors.

No Flash from now on. Anyone else finding it an inconvenience on their 7?

Let's face it, no matter how much business you can make with your Nexus 7, a tablet is designed mainly for entertainment. A bigger screen usually means that we get to enjoy certain medias on a bigger screen, aka videos. However not every streaming website can afford or even cares enough to have fancy apps like Youtube and if you stream live channels online for emergency sports on your work computer you would know that flash still plays a part in our daily life.
As Adobe quits on Flash on our future Androids to get everyone into the HTML5 stage, PC users will still have a fairly high amount of data for grabs through Flash but our tablets will be losing that whole side of information while the transition goes through. Although I don't, but I could imagine my girlfriend playing an online Flash game on my 7 but it won't happen anymore.
and... we lose one thing to show-off to the iOS users...
How is everyone else coping with the fading of Flash on our mobile devices?
you can still side load flash and use it with other browsers it works well

pretty easy to get flash..
First install the AOSP browser:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1780746
After that, I still had some newer flash content saying it needed the latest flash player, so installed the two flash players from this thread:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/go...189897-no-flash-got-you-down-try-fix.html#anb
Works perfectly now!
Yeah I was bummed out when I first read that on Adobes web site. Yeah eventually most sites will hopefully change or add support for our tablets and phones to compensate foir Adobe doing that however being that we have the lovely OS that we do there are very easy workarounds! I installed the AOSP browser @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1780746 and flash @ https://www.dropbox.com/s/cgsd3gyy7v6c90j/com.adobe.flashplayer-1.apk This is great too because I prefer the AOSP browser (I love the full screen mode with quick controls). The bookmarks don't sync though.. So I just kept the Chrome Bookmarks widget on my homescreen and set the default browser as Browser. Works like a charm!
I despise flash so I don't miss it on my device, at least not for anything important. Bring on HTML5!
yea everyone despises flash. high CPU usage low performance. but it has been playing such a big part in the past 10 years or so that it might just be TOO sudden a change when not everyone has gone to HTML5 and officially taken out flash as a whole. This might hurt Android as it is a crucial time Post-Jobs for android to have a major counter attack on iOS and an obvious visible advantage has been taken out.
I sideloaded flash & firefox for iplayer but other than that I haven't missed, the sooner flash dies the better.

I have had absolutely no problem with not having Flash.
When you referred to other streaming sites, are you talking about porn sites? lol
I sideloaded flash and the AOSP browser so I could use iPlayer, but that's pretty much it. Also added the iPlayer app once I found the APK.

It works for now but as time goes on and android has more updates how long will it continue to work? At some point it may break completely.
