12/25, what's the current root method? - Kindle Fire General

Hi guys, I just got my Kindle Fire for xmas today. I want to root, but I've been reading the forum and see that a recent OTA update came out and there's been problems. I'm not super computer savy and I really don't want to mess it up. Do I have to wait for a new method to root? If someone wants to take a newb under their wing and tell me what roms etc I should get it would be much appreciated! Just a little overwhelmed with all the posts, not sure where to get consolidated current info.
I haven't even turned it on yet, I'm not sure if I should wait to turn it on, so that if it doesn't have the OTA update it doesn't send through as soon as I turn it on... whatever advice anyone can give would be much appreciated!

For Windows, Use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399889

Tired that version today works wel..

I haven't turned my Kindle on yet, can I avoid all the complications by somehow keeping it from getting the OTA update when it turns on? (I'm assuming it's not running 6.2.1 yet because that just came out?) I'm afraid to turn it on and I really want to play with it so if someone can let me know that would be great!
And if anyone wants to talk me through it, my screenname is Insidious Lily on aim, I need moral support/help, lol.

Just keep WiFi off until you are done... no issues.

Okay.. I'm a little overwhelmed by all the stuff in that post but I'll do my best. I'm in that IRC chat with another newb if you want to come help us, haha.
And high five, I have a HTC incredible too.

How about current method for Mac users?
ty!

So here's what I did...
(I have a Mac running snow leopard).
I downloaded the KindleFireRootMacLinux folder referenced in the old Mac root thread. This gets adb running on the mac. Use whatever system you need to get adb running on your PC. The command adb on the PC is replaced by ./adb-mac on the Mac.
Then I used the burrito root method and pushed super user to the kindle fire. using the adb commands from terminal.
Finally, I downloaded the google apps folder, installed Googleservicesframework *FIRST* and rebooted.
Then I installled the remainder of the apps EXCEPT market.
Then I used the ES Folder program with root explorer etc enabled to copy the market.apk file to system/app and changed permissions and ran it.
Everything worked fine.
THEN I installed DroidWall to take away the internet communication capabilities of all the Amazon apps (and browser) to try and keep another stealth push from Amazon from breaking root.
Someone else will have to link to the files because I haven't posted enough to include links.

Current root is BurritoRoot http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1410223
if your particularly lazy Vashypooh's utility has been updated to use it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399889

I'll just join in to mention something the OP may not realize. Although I'm basically a newbie rooting the KF also, the current root method works with the new update from Amazon, so you don't have to worry about preventing the update to download. In fact, it's probably best to let it update first, otherwise you'll just have to repeat rooting it.
Anyone feel free to correct me if I have that wrong.

Yep, but we did discover it doesnt work with 6.0 this morning. Seems what I used wasn't fully introduced until after 6.0

EVO 4G & Hero Root & the Eris

Hi All,
I viewed the video posted by the Unrevoeked team a little while back about their EVO 4G root and it definitely caught my attention.

I just noticed today they posted an update on the thread and a link to:
http://unrevoked.com/
If you follow the site they let you download unrevoked.apk
If this APK running in some way means we can root. Well It installs successfully and when you actually run it it says "done." So I believe it does what it is suppose to do on the Eris, I just dont know what steps to take from their.
I have tried installed 2 different superuser apks and neither seems to work. Not sure if I should be doing something else.
PS I am using unrooted OTA

By meaning neither one of them "work" you mean when you press on the app and all you see is a black screen thats all it will do until a program that requires root requires permission to do whatever the app was designed to do. Ohh usb debugging in setting->applications->Development-> USB debugging should be checked.
Hey,
I tested out ADB its not working and by not working I mean neither prompt for superuser permission.
doesnt work
It doesn't work sadly. The Dev's blog is shadowmite. com/blog/ (without the space) if you are looking for any followups though.
It looks like all it does is try and replace/write /system/bin/su but I can't entirely tell. This app is supposed to run something on boot so you may want to try rebooting. Also, it creates a log: /data/DxDrm/unrevoked.log

Success rooting Bravo

Rooted my Bravo today with SuperOneClick, worked like a charm, and appears to be permanent (after several reboots). This is my first smart phone, so it's all new to me, but so far, so good.
New to smartphones myself. I was heavy in motomodding years back but this is new game for me. I still have yet to find a good noob tutorial (step by step) for installing non-markets (in particular sirius-xm app). I have rooted with S1C, but now what? I know , that's what the search forum button is for. I've done that, but all I find are mid-level talk, and not idiot(me)speak. I'll keep watching for examples. Thanks.
Once I got the phone rooted, I was relying on the SideLoad Wonder Machine I found on another site (lets you install .apk files through a point-and-click interface), but it failed to install several apps. Then I found out how to do it using ADB from the command line and so far, everthing I've tried has installed with no problem. I'm only semi-geeky, and I can grok what I've had to thus far. I started out at the command line in DOS 3.3 back in 1988, so delving into this has not been too hard. Kinda fun, actually.
Tomorrow I'll post up step by step instructions on how I did it the noon way. You have to buy an app called Root Explorer that gives you access to write on system files
Thanks alot. I will say the SWM program has worked great so far for installing nonmarkets. Very easy to use. Now I just need to learn how to remove all the dead weight and I'll be happy. I will say that the Sirius-xm app is VERY CPU intensive, so multitasking is difficult. Hoping removing uneeded processes will relieve some of the strain.
I'd love to be able to get rid of some of the bloatware apps that came with this phone, if for no other reason than to make it more 'mine.' The stock browser, Latitude, Mobile Video, Media Share, Social Networking (ack!) all gotta go.
hi Scrondar, could you post some basic instructions and links to superoneclick? i just got a bravo and would like to root it.
I have rooted and enabled non market apps via super one click 1.5.5. To get rid of bloatware I downloaded bloat freezer from the market. It does not totally remove them from the phone but freezes them from running in the back ground or appearing in the app drawer. It's 1.99 in the market I had to email the dev because it forced closed when I opened it but he was awesome about getting me a working version. Worth every penny. I wanted to freeze it because it gives you the option to defrost if you want. I think I read somewhere if you delete the stock apps from the phone it keeps you from updating to 2.2 or any other version of android in the future (if one is ever released for this phone). Although I may be wrong about that.
Chagla- You can find the link to rooting instructions on this site, but in a nutshell, I downloaded and installed the Moto USB drivers on my Win7 64-bit desktop machine, enabled USB Debugging on the Bravo (Settings->Applications->Development->USB Debugging (checked), downloaded and ran One Click Root (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=739304), and that was it. Now, what I'd REALLY like to try is some custom ROMs on this phone, but as yet know of none that will safely work on it. Good luck!

Never got the chance to try it. By the time I was ready to try rooting, that app was no longer available on the Market, and then I found Super One-Click, which worked on my first attempt.

[Q] what are the advantages and disadvantages of rooting and are there any risks?

Could somebody please tell me what the advantages and disadvantages of rooting the flipside are, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, are there any risks??
Will I be able to take of all of these ATT apps?
Will I be able to move my apps from the phones memory to the SD card?
Can the phone be unrooted?
Will all of my apps still work?
What is the best route to root? I have the z4root.
I am much indebted to anyone who will answer these questions. Thanks.
z4root will work fine, it's nice an easy to use. Rooting won't give you an easy way to move apps to the sd card, but you can remove the AT&T (and other system) apps. You can either do it by hand, or with any number of apps on the market. I prefer titanium backup, personally. All of your existing apps will work, there's no change there.
The only real disadvantage is that you'll have the power to screw up your phone. You can potentially screw up bad enough that you'll need to reflash the stock .sbf file. Generally, this takes some real screwing around, but just thought I'd point it out.
Thank u for your thourough answer. What do you mean by screw it up. How could I do that and how do i avoid it. Are you saying by virtue of the fact that i'm rooting that i'll screw it up, or it's something that i may do afterwards that may do it? Thanks.
also, are there any other advantages to rooting other than taking off the apps?
The act of rooting itself shouldn't screw anything up, but having root means you could possibly do something later that would. Generally, you'd have to be messing with stuff you have no business messing with. With root, you can remount the system directory as read/write, and then end up deleting or modifying a file that won't let the phone boot, which means you'd need to reflash. Stay away from the command line if you don't know what you're doing, and don't grant root access to apps you don't trust, and you're reasonably safe.
Other than removing system apps, like the AT&T garbage, you can also backup and restore apps and their data, which is great for if you need to reflash, if you switch phones, etc. There's not a TON of stuff that requires root, but honestly, removing the AT&T junk is definitely a good reason to root, the phone feels much faster after scrapping a lot of the blur and AT&T stuff.
I'm assuming then that any android/att/Motorola updates will not be problem either? BTW, do you if and when Motorola will bupdating the flipside to 2.2? Thanks.
There shouldn't be any problem updating with an official update if/when we get one, but you'll need to re-root and remove the AT&T stuff again. There's no word on when we'll get 2.2, but I'd assume we'll get it at some point.
Ok. I just rooted! Yeah, it worked! But i cannot figue out how to delete the att bloatware. I go into the apps manager and click on one of the att apps, and there is still no option to uninstall; only to clear the cache. Also, I downloaded the titanium and I cannot figure out how to do it from there either. Plus, I still had to sideload the titanium which i tbought that i would not have to do once i rooted.

You need to enable Unknown Sources before you can install non-Market apps
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=867637
This is also an example of how you can mess up your phone by having root access.
That is part of the problem that i do not have that option in two.one. that is why i had to sideload all of those programs. are you saying that i screwed up my phone. i tried clicking on the link but this googlw ad comes up and i cant get past it.
Ok, i got through to the link. But the guy seems pretty shaky as to whether you should follow his instructions. Is this legit or what?
Maybe one of you guys can help. I'm new to alot of this but my last droid x was rooted and it was great I used z4root worked perfectly. But now I have a new X and a z4root apk. On my laptop, now what? Last rooted X, I was fortunate enough to catch z4root on the market, like a day before they updated. HELP!!!!!
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
There are instructions in another post in this forum on how to enable Non-Market Apps, also known as Unknown Sources. With Titanium Backup, make sure that you grant it root permissions when it asks, and that it says something like this on the overview:
Root access: OK (BusyBox 1.17.2 from system)
HyperShell (FAST!): YES
Fast/Auto app install: Yes (using HyperShell)
SQLite: YES (SQLite 3.7.2 included)
Then just click on Backup/Restore at the top, and you'll get a list of all your apps. If you don't have backup/restore at the top, your sd card isn't mounted on the phone, unplug your usb cable and hit Menu > More > Reload application.
From Backup/Restore, you get a huge list of all the apps on your phone. Just scroll down to the AT&T stuff, tap them, and click uninstall in the top-right corner. If you're not sure if you want to uninstall something, because it might belong to something important, click Freeze instead. Freezing will stop the app from running, and stop it from showing up in your tray, but you can easily unfreeze it to restore it if it turns out it was important.
Here's the list of stuff I have frozen/uninstalled:
AdService 1.0
all of the "AT&T" apps
all of the "com.motorola" apps
Data Manager and Data Manager Service
Help Center
Home (I use ADWLauncher, don't remove this if you don't already have an alternative launcher installed)
MediaSync
Mobile Video
all of the "MotoBlur" apps
My Uploads
Phone Portal
Quick Contact
Social Messaging, Social Messaging Service, Social Networking, and Social Status
Sticky Note
Video Editor Lite
Vlingo Voice
Weather 2.1
WHERE
Work Contacts
Mobile Banking
Magic Smoke Wallpapers
Kodak Perfect Touch
AT&T Address Book
Quickoffice
YPmobile
As for enabling unknown sources, it's a bit of a pain, you'll need to be comfortable with a command line to do replace the files, and comfortable with a hex editor if you want to edit your own instead of reusing someone else's files. I managed to screw up my phone in the process and had to completely reflash and start over, it wasn't fun.
His instructions do work, but his .sh file doesn't work, you'll need to paste the commands one by one into your command prompt. I preferred to edit my own files, so I wouldn't have the same market ID, and that's just slightly more complex. I can help you through it either way though, just make a post over in that thread if you're having problems.

You just need to get z4root installed on your phone, it should be pretty straightforward. The Droid X shouldn't be blocking non-market apps, so just download it from your phone and run the .apk to install.
So do I hook my phone up to my laptop, and put the apk. on my sd?
Or download the apk. directly to my phone from the site?

I found the link, but the directions are too complicated for my novice understanding of technology. It looks like I am stuck. I don't want to try what he's saying and take any chances. Are there any other alternatives? Or do you have any other suggestions as to how to make the most of the space that I do have with the att bloatware, because I am constantly running out of room. It is a strange phenomenon that I don't understand, that when I turn on the phone it will have around 40mb to play with, and after a few hours it is down to 16 and then 10, and then before I know it, the phone is telling me that my memory is full. So then I reset and it's back to ~40 again. Do you have an explanation? Thanks.

rooting A7+

I want to root my A7+ WITHOUT installing someone elses custom rom. I just want it rooted long enough that I can push GAPPS onto it. Is there any special trick with Elocity A7+ ??
Will I only be able to do this with earlier versions from Elocity?
The reason I want to do it this way is twofold.
1) I want EVERTHING to keep working.
2) I don't want Superuser snoops.
I can work with ./adb shell on this Linux or it would be even better for someone to show me how to COMPILE the newly released source from Elocity.
Thank you all !!
Dan
as shown in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1431967 you could use Z4root.apk
It allows for temporary root
Cheers !
Yes Thanks . I did Z4Root PERMANENT. Did my thing and then turned off root .
I remembered just before coming back to post here. I never used ./adb shell push this time. Couldn't get RW with ./adb so I just copied from GAPPS folder to /system/app/ using Root Explorer.
First time I copied TOO MUCH AND IT WAS IN ENDLESS LOOP.
I repaired and then copied the important stuff...Installed Gmail and then rebooted.
All is well after reboot. But I had to go through Wizard again. Now running everything !!
Dan
another thing that i find funny about this new setup is that bluetooth and foursquare only run when while im rooted????
if i turn off root they dont work
So as I said in my last post, BLUETOOTH only works while rooted. (after having rooted once) So, I wanted to use BLUETOOTH with a new keyboard. I removed Z4root, but left Superuser running in the background. Well , once again, everything seemed to run great for a week, but then things went south. I was getting a reboot loop type thing, about 5 times before it would finally boot up.
I'm not sure, but is suspect this leaves you wide open to a virus or other malicious garbage. So now I'm back to factory with no Gmail or Youtube but I'm finding workarounds.

Due to the popular demand, and the questions in the last few days. The problem arise from people who were using verygreen version of root. The true is, his version of root works, but what very happens is that he decided to lock down some of the stuff, and thus making further mod become inconvenience for a lot of people. Many people don't know how to fix it. They do not know how to read and interpret the error message and fix it. In a way I think this maybe a better alternative since I believe people who looking to modify their Nook HD/HD+ or root them, what they very after at the minimum is the Google Play store and ability to install any apps they want. While this isn't gonna get you everything, it does most of what people are very after with very little fuss. The main purpose of this thread isn't to have everything working, because we are working around the limitation of what the Nook has, but rather stream line what we already have working and get it there quickly and painlessly from a scratch. So this is mainly to use after the system has been wipe/factory reset.
After I have made this post, I still got someone PM me said it doesn't work. While I'm sure that it does work, I want to be very confident about it. So, I decided to sacrifice my already good setup of my Nook HD+ and FULLY FACTORY RESET it then record this video. Let me make it clear, the file was download from the thread again, and not from my local copy. I'm baffled. I'm just not sure is there is anything easier way it can be done. Seriously just unzip and run 1 command and people still say it doesn't work. The responsibility to read the information is up to you. I don't have the capability to upload those information to your head. Since I already proved that this work, I'll not response to PM regarding this. If you have question or problem, post it on the thread.
Disclaimer:
If something gone wrong, it's all your fault. I take ZERO responsibility for what happen to your device, your life, your wife/husband, your kids, your unborn child and etc. You get the idea.
Breaking News:
It seem the latest update 2.0.5 actually break the root. So, be warned.
Preface:
I didn't discovered the original root on the Nook HD+, verygreen did Nor did I discover the ability to enable install of unknown source. Leapinlar thread has the history on that so I won't go there. But I have created some scripts to help gaining root, modify some critical setting, and adding GAPPS to the Nook HD/HD+, but they are all scattered. Leapinlar has a thread that help gather many of those information together here. Still people are still having trouble. As I stated, I believe what many people are after is just the ability to install any app they want. And this should get very close to their goal. While the end goal is probably something like a custom ROM, something like a CM10 that verygreen is developing; and I believe it will get there. It will probably take a bit more time for the installation process to be easy for people to follow. And there may be something that need to get fix when the very early beta come out. It's like in the Alpha if not pre-Alpha ATM.
While this will get a lot done for you, I still encourage people to go read the original mod threads, there maybe some useful information for you.
1. My original root thread.
2. My original GAPPS thread.
3. I encourage you to read the Nook HD+ Stock Root User Tips from LeapinLar thread, this is like a must read for anyone planning to root their Nook HD/HD+.
Pre-Requisite:
Working ADB that can see Nook HD/HD+ and the Nook HD/HD+ of course(that include enable ADB on the Nook also). If you need help getting drivers and ADB to see Nook, check out LeapinLar thread. ATM, Nook HD/HD+ have 3 firmwares version, 2.0.0, 2.0.2 and 2.0.4. When the get it online it will update automatically. So far all the mods we know of works on all 3. But this doesn't mean it will on future version. Again, LeapinLar thread will have that information as well.
Instruction:
Download these three files. allinone.zip GoogleMaps.apk and gapps-ics-system.zip
Unzip allinone.zip (don't unzip gapps-ics-system.zip)
run allinone.bat
after you got google play store, I suggest you to update it first, the run it at least once before installing Google Map by either copy it to Nook and use your favorite file manager to install or using the command
Code:
adb install GoogleMaps.apk
Post-Install: (or if you don't see the google apps)
The way apps installed via B&N store are different from other apps install via sideloading or any other app stores, and that include GAPPS as well. What this means is that all these apps won't show up on the stock Nook Launcher naturally. But other launcher will see them w/o any problem. That said, I recommend you pick another launcher from the google app store and use that instead. In order to see those extra apps from the Nook Launcher on the Apps screen, hold the volume up button while you press the "Apps" word at the top of the screen for 2-3 seconds. An "Extras" screen will pop up showing all of the sideloaded apps. Another thing is that the superuser app need one extra nudge. It need to be launch at least once manually before it start working. This only need to be done once.
IMO, while I could just point you to one of the launcher or even sideload it during the installation for you. I prefer not to do that. I very think the choice to choose one should be your own. Personal preference aside, I rather not point you to one because I don't know how safe is it to randomly point people to some random apk when it's not even the real purpose of this. I very prefer people get to the google play store on their own and get it from there. If you don't know one then ask around. Many people here have suggested ADW, Apex, Nova, Zeam. If you want to grab apk to sideload, then you can try androiddrawer, it look rather ok.
PRECAUTION:
All these mods you see the Nook HD & HD+ are workaround. They are not the holy grail. So, for example the superuser checker app won't recognize them. That doesn't mean you don't have root, you do but because it's not a traditional root thus they don't see them. A bigger concern is that because this is a workaround. And it's a workaround because we don't have full control of the Nook, any modification to the files or added files /system and its sub-directories (regardless of whether you do so manually or via app) will result in 8 boot loop followed by a full system wipe. Anything stored on the Nook internal storage will be gone. As such, we encourage you not to use such app. We know of at least SuperSU and many ad removal apps will create such event. For more information I strongly encourage you to read those threads I pointed to earlier.
Footnote:
Google Chrome browser is also not included, it's quite big and the latest version doesn't seem compatible(at least that's what I heard). And the voice search is also not working.

Meaning I'll leave those guides I made outdated and rotted. Although I just updated the GAPPS installation to be super simple. The All-in-One will basically be the same thing. You just run 1 command and get all three of them. Since I figured people who root their Nook HD/HD+ will end up want to get GAPPS anyway. If people want it, I'll put a new instruction on this thread instead. The Poll will run for 3 days, and then after the poll close, I'll consider that a majority decision. That or if a mod close this thread for duplicate.

Well, if it works consistently enough there will be nothing for the layperson to get confused about. Only if it leads to troubleshooting would it maybe cause problems (because the person would have no idea what steps were taken).
I say if the process can be further automated, even if it's just (hopefully) a stopgap to more thorough root and ROMs down the road, then by Glob do it!

I'm not sure what further automated this thing could be, you only have to download few files, unzip and run ONE command to get all three things done; root+Manual OTA+GAPPS.

Right, I'm saying go for it. Your proposal in this thread would be "further automated" than the current method where only root is automated, is what I meant.
I like the idea

Basically I'm sick of manually reinstalling everything from scratch every time it bootloop mine. Well, I guess mine bootloop more than some ppl here because I explore mine more. So, would you be interested in seeing a simple all-in-one guide? It's already done, I'm just not sure whether to make another thread or not.

Yes please, i like that idea :good:
Yes!
I have ADB & side loading working via Mac OSX, but would love an all in one before taking on this next step as I'm not too good with Terminal commands.
Yes please! I'd love a step-by-step to root the device, manual OTA, and GApps! Although, I do still appreciate the work you have done so far, it's amazing! ;D
Thank you very much.
Sounds like a fantastic idea! Please do! And thx again for all you've done for the nook HD community!

I have 2.04 - the installation went well. i've tried and i'm able to get launcher running but cannot get playstore running.
Ok, am I just messing this up big time or what? When I run the .bat it starts, then it says mkdir failed for /data/su, file exists. Then it tries to do every file saying "cannot stat "whatever" : No such file or directory." Over and over again. Major fail. I've rooted multiple android phones and tablets without these kinds of problems. Am I messing up something simple?

If you rooted once before it will give you that cannot mkdir error. You might erase and deregister using the B&N settings, then as soon as you reload and register, run the mod. Only once.

I've done that a few times, but I'll try again.
Thank you very much for this all-in-one. It's genius!
I've just installed it on my Dad's HD+, and it works like a charm. Damn, it's so amazing! One thing though, rookie question, and I guess I'm asking for too much, but would it be possible to redirect the "Apps" icon on the "desktop" to auto redirect to the Android app-drawer; where the Android apps are located - i.e. Play store? Sorry for the bother, and I understand I am asking for too much, so please ignore my message.
Again, thank you very much for your efforts. Works like a charm.
Did a full reset on my HD+. No longer shows the mkdir failed part, everything else still says no such file or directory.

Did you download that gapps-ics-system.zip file and put it in the same folder you are running the allinone bat file from?

I've tried it in the same area and out, although I'm not sure if both were fresh. I'm trying yet again here in the next few minutes. I will get this. I've only owned one android device that I didn't root, and the was the Samsung Intercept. If you've ever heard of that piece of crap, you'll know why I didn't bother.

Finally! I'd already had the gapps in the folder before but I guess the su file had already been created. A full wipe, followed by proper placement of the files finally worked! I would ask if it is sad to feel so good about such a simple achievement, but I don't care. It finally worked! Thanks to someone0 for the all-in-one and leapinlar for the advice.
