[Q] Nook color screen unresponsive at bottom. - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I've recently purchased my first android device and wow is it cool. I've installed several different ROM's on it (CM7 253, Cm7.1, CM9, Cm7.2). What I've noticed is that the bottom has some issues that may hardware issues.
When I'm in a draw program I cannot draw fluidly near the bottom near the N button. Also when I use the pointer control utility in settings (forgot the name) it is nice an fluid for all of the screen EXCEPT on the side where the N button is. It will seems to get sporadic and will make contact, and not and I'll get dots and dashes instead of a nice fluid line. The soft buttons work fine but require more of a firm push when position in portrait mode.
I'm thinking hardware? This is on a refurbished nook BTW.
I can't get to the device as it's under the tree (for my wife).
Can someone test this and tell me if yours can create a fluid line drawing near the edge where the N button is?
Thanks,
Zack

I bought 9 NCs as christmas presents this year, I had to return 3 of the due to hardware problems (Thankfully I tested all of them the day I got them).
One of the ones I returned had poor touch sensitivity on the bottom of the screen which got progressively worse over a few minutes of use. I had to retype several letters when I was putting in the wifi password then it went into standby and I couldn't unlock the lock screen because it wasn't detecting my swipe. It would just jiggle a little. By the time I took it to B&N it wouldn't even jiggle. You'll have to send it back to a place in Reno but going into B&N will save you some time on the phone.
The other 2 had busted wifi (no signal even in B&N) and a sticky power button (every couple of times you tapped it it would stick and turn the device off). There's also a few with blue tinted screens but I didn't want to return those and play refurb roulette again.
Oh, and I just did some drawing in canvas (the notion ink app) and other than having difficulty drawing a straight line my nook works just fine along all the edges.

Wife got the tablet today and loves it. I was just mucking around with it and found the nook screen recalibrator and that seemed to completely solve my problem! Whatever isin that magic potion is great.

yeah, there can sometimes me issues with the digitizer that are almost universally fixed by screen recalibration.

bottom of touch screen will not work... sometimes (Cyanogen software error)?

Hi all,
Specs
Superbad 1.7GS (cyanogen 5.08)
ADWv 0.75
2.""23 radio (latest)
Danger SPL
-Used g1 acquired Jan 2010
-been running great with no hardware issues up until now
my g1 fell out of my jacket pocket when I was sitting in a chair two days ago. it's been dropped about 4-5 times since I got it used in january - the other instances resulting in a more forceful impact then the 3 foot drop that occurred the other day. I have a soft plastic back door for an extended battery that seemed to absorb most of the blow too.
when I picked it up and tried it, it seemed to work fine. Then I decided to extend the number of screens from 4 to 5 home screens, and I've been running into trouble ever since.
I can't seem to access the bottom centimeter of my screen! I can see it fine, but there is no TOUCH response anymore:
-can't open the drawer button
-can't use my shortcut keys
-can't press any letters on the keyboard that would be in that bottom centimeter
-if I press menu from the home screen, I can't press any of the buttons on the bottom of the screen (the top row works fine however).
-if I pull the notification drawer down I can't pull it back up (unless I press the back button)
-If I try to long press an icon and then drag it into the "trash" it pretends like there's an invisible wall at that last bottom centimeter and I can't do anything.
WHAT MAKES IT WEIRD:
- i can use the track ball to access anything I can't touch fine (minus the virtual keyboard of course).
- If I do a switchrom restore, IT WORKS FINE... for about ten minutes, then seems to go back to the same problem. so I know the touch screen isn't dead down there.
please can anyone help me? how can I fix this? I've tried rebooting it several times, installing a different ADW launcher (the one off of Market), wiping and starting over. the problem still comes back after I open the app drawer a few times.
I have the same error and I have dropped my phone more than a dozen times. My touch screen starts working after the display goes off or I press the red button and wipe the screen with a cloth.
I researched it for a while and I got the following reason of why it may have happend.
- Phone dropped
- Over charging
- Wrong Charger etc etc etc...
Well coming to the point the only way to fix it is to get your screen replaced, if your phone is under warranty unroot and send it to T-Mobile and they will replace it for you.
If no warranty then buy a new screen off ebay and replace it.
Hope this helps
a friend of mine had an issue similar to that on his HTC Hero. He no longer has that issue since he has put Froyo on it.
Hope this helps
Well the problem seems to have fixed itself. I didn't touch it for about twelve hours, DIDN'T CHARGE IT like I normally do (overnight) and the problem seems to be fixed! Been using it with no problems for about four days now!

Pressure Sensitivity Glitch - Interesting Note

Hi all,
I just thought i'd post about an interesting glitch I had on my GNote (which is my favourite device in my entire house btw). I noticed a few weeks ago that my screen appeared to have a pressure sensitivity "dead spot" on the bottom left of the screen. If you drew horizontal lines on the screen, the line would stay uniformly thick until you hit that spot where it would thin out. I was stressing a little as this was my birthday present from Taiwan and I wasn't sure how to get it fixed in Australia. Well as it turns out I found the cause of the dead spot. It was the case I had the phone in! It was a phone case/wallet combo that I also got with the phone, and if I removed the phone from the case and retested with horizontal lines it was fine. Return it back to the case and boom! Deadspot! I quickly switched my phone to my spare case and all is well again. I have no idea how the case could possibly cause such a glitch as from what I read the P-Sensitive digitiser works with magnetic fields (the case has no magnetic clasps or anything). But all is well now and I thought you mob might like to hear about it. I love the GNote, its the perfect device for me.

"Ghost Touches"

Hey All-
I searched for this with the assumption that with all the N7 screen issues there would be others experiencing this but I was not able to find much of any help.
----
My N7 is registering touches without me making contact with the screen. It is always in the same location. When the keyboard is up, it is where the letter 'D' is located. If I pass my finger directly overhead, or often times, even near to, the 'D' button, the tablet registers it as a touch. I can make the tablet register a touch with my finger as far as 1/4'' away from the screen surface. As you may imagine, this makes typing near impossible. As I pass over the letter 'D' to access other letters, it registers 'D' everytime.
I have tried other keyboards and the problem persists. It isn't necessarily over the same letter (due to differing keyboard layouts) but it is always in the same location on the screen.
I popped the back cover off and tightened/loosened screws to no avail. Turning the screen off and then back on does not help as it seems to do with some of the other screen issues that others are experiencing. The one thing I have found to strangely help is pushing on the screen in the affected location with extremely firm pressure; in essence squishing the s*** out of it. When I do this, the screen will behave better (it will still ghost touch in the area but my finger must be very close to the screen) for a period of time before reverting to misbehavior.
--
Has anyone else experienced something of this sort? I am currently running stock/rooted/unlocked; It seems to be a hardware issue so I don't think another ROM will help though I will try the CM10 nightlies when they boot properly. I'm ready to just bring it back for a new one but I know the Wal-Mart I bought it at is out of stock.
Any help would be very much appreciated, thank you.
Im having the same issue mine is in random places, usually top left corner but when im texting it starts typing random letters, I've been looking
for a solution or someone with the same issue you are the first and only that i have found. I am also having the dead spot issues, they tend to alternate.

Nexus 7 phantom taps
I'm having similar problems with my Nexus 7 bought in November. Worked fine for a while, now I'm getting phantom taps making typing a real pain and page scrolling can be frustrating when it suddenly scrolls to the top of the page! Anyone know if this is a warranty fix?
I had this happen one time. It freaked me out.

OP and others - have you look at the video here - post #1254 - look familiar to you at all - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1770919&page=126
A # of us had been freaked out, wondering if our secured WPA2 network has been breached and remotely controlled ...
If your device is brand new, return it & get it exchanged, or get it fixed under warranty - it's hardware related. The 16GB WiFi only model that I got from local Staples store had that problem that got worst - the replacement & upgraded 32GB unit has been flawless thus far - running stock but rooted 4.1.2 rom. I was within the 14 days/holiday time frame for exchange/return w/o stocking fees, luckily & did not have to wait for it to be repaired under warranty.
Upgrading to 4.2 firmware and/or custom Rom & kernel do not help, YMMV - of course ...
BTW, local Staples tech support counter manager said up to 20% of the N7 are getting returned/exchanged for various issues. Wow !!
After 4.2.2 my nexus7 makes phanton clicks too
Similar with this video www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tkh3W_ITwEw
I turn off screen and turn on and stop... The times in times i get it
Have solution?
I had to take my screen protector off after the update it was pressing places on the screen didn't happen until 4.2.2 update

[Q] I've noticed a problem with palm rejection.

Hey guys, I just picked up my Tegra Note and I'm enjoying it, but in testing out the potential and limitations of the DirectStylus, I came across a problem and I want to find out if it's just my problem, or if it's reproducible with all Tegra Notes with the latest system updates.
Basically, I'm using the stylus, and stylus only mode is activated. This works pretty well and ignores most/all inputs from anything except the tip of the stylus.
However, I have noticed that if I slide my finger onto the screen from the outer edge/bevel, it will often (nearly 100% of the time) register this as a touch. For an example, if I tap the home button with my finger nothing happens, however if I drag my finger from just below the screen onto the home button, it will press. Likewise I cannot scroll through home screens by normally swiping my finger, but if I swipe from off screen on the left or right, it will register. Bringing down the notification area with a finger swipe, etc, all work as well when naturally this should only be possible with the stylus.
The main problem with this is when writing/drawing with my hand resting on the edge of the device. If my palm is entirely off the screen it is fine. If my palm is entirely on the screen then stylus only works, too. However, if in the process of writing my hand slides from the side onto the screen, suddenly the stylus looses focus and I'm drawing lines with my palm.
I hope I have explained this issue correctly, and I wondered if this was a known problem? If there are any solutions? Have I messed up and set an option somewhere I shouldn't have? Should I get it replaced? Sorry for all the questions!
Oh and it's not rooted or anything. Just stock, updated to the latest system version through the system updates.
Thanks, hope you can help!
I get a similar issue at the bottom left of the screen sometimes. It only seems to effect the bottom left but in both orientations so that rules out a hardware issue. Doing a quick lock and unlock seems to fix it for me and it functions fine until next time I turn on stylus mode. Seems hit and miss with no real way to replicate it.
It didn't seem to do it before ota 2.3 so I predict a hotfix for the issue. Its a minor issue, the battery life on 4.4.2 isn't however, 4-5hrs with lite use is pretty rubbish. I suspect that's an issue with the power saving features (I think it's stuck on Max performance all the time).
Would be nice if they fix the SD write issue but Google dictate that I think.
Mine was certainly a lot worse than that - persistent on all four edges of the screen and there is no way to stop it. 60-80% of the time it was manageable, but consistently reproducible, other times it was far worse and could only manage dots and dashes when I tried to write anything while resting my palm on the screen. It also developed a 'blind spot' problem I've noticed reported on a couple of forums - a spot where the stlus simply refused to draw - so I grew more concerned that I had a problem with the actual hardware. So, I took it into the store I bought it from, and they're going to replace it for me.
Hopefully I won't have a problem with the replacement one, because I absolutely love the tablet!
I've had similar problems... just remember, all of the stylus functionality is governed by software; the screen on this is simply a regular capacitive screen that's also capable of detecting the size and shape of what's touching it, and the rest is calculated by software. It's a neat idea, but in practice it hasn't held up as well as Nvidia would've liked us to believe. Now that I've had a Galaxy Note 2 for a couple months, I have to say that the active stylus experience blows the TN7 away, but then again it's a much more expensive technology to implement. I almost always used a pencil with my TN7 while it was my day-to-day work buddy since I found the stylus to be too sticky and hard to write with... I also found several of the issues I was having weren't as bad while using a pencil, so maybe you could give that a try. Also, remember that if the screen is dirty that it will affect the stylus's performance as the screen is so sensitive that even a little moisture could register as a touch on the screen.
I received my replacement tablet today, and it is a lot better than the one I previously had. While the problem is still there, it is far, FAR better than before. Now it seems to be a minor nuisance, rather than a consistently reproducible problem. On top of that it has a much more vibrant screen - less yellow and washed out - and no 'dead zones' when trying to write with the stylus. So while I am certain software has an impact on performance, there must have been something weird going on inside the hardware of my previous device, too.
Considering the price, the fact that others have had similar issues, and how much I like about everything else - I'm very happy with my new TN7 now!
Have same problem .... When i swipe from left or right side of the screen it detects stylus nd do all the things.... Dont knw wat to do amazon is not replacing too the tablet..!
Same problem, I don't usually mind it other when I'm using an app like sketchbook pro, it becomes really annoying.

[Q] Touchscreen Randomly Stopped Working

Ok, so first thing's first. I've been researching this for a few days now before creating this post. The touchscreen issues I'm finding online, are similar to what I'm experiencing, but the solutions have already been done, or my phone is not responding to them. I'm making this thread to see if anyone else has experienced the same issues or has any new news before I a) return my phone to stock, b) replace the digitizer, or c) buy a new one or upgrade to the G3.
My G2 was rooted, but kept on stock ROM with only small tweaks here and there. After the latest update, I noticed my work G2 had much better reception, so I returned my phone to stock to download the update. After updating, I re-rooted the phone, this time, the only thing I changed was the keyboard which I replaced with the G3 keyboard. Everything was fine for months until about a month ago.
It started with not being able to pull down the notification shade on the right half. No biggie, but after a week or so, it got worse. While using instagram, I noticed that the confirm button was sporadically responsive. Sometimes it worked fine, other times it didn't work at all. It began to progressively get worse on an almost daily basis. I decided to see what was going on and enabled both input options in the developer options menu. I found that the entire right side, about 1/8" was not responding to touch, the area not covered by glass screen protector( i removed it later while trying to troubleshoot). The upper right area showed about a half inch block that wasn't responding (the area where the data ribbon is). I was ok with that as instagram was really the only thing I used being affected.
About a week ago, the mid left screen area started being errratic. It began to get worse and started to affect the front touch screen buttons ( the area where the other data ribbon is). I enabled the input options again and saw that I now had a good portion of my left side of the screen was unresponsive. Even though I didn't drop it, I thought maybe the data ribbons had come loose as those 2 areas are where they are. I opened and disassembled the phone and re-sat the connctions after inspecting them. I double-checked all the other connections and LDIs in case humidity was the culprit. Everything looked good. Didn't fix the problem.
I've had to set my phone to unlock by facial recognition to ensure I don't get locked out, and changed my pin to use numbers not affected. I'm going to replace the digitizer, but wanted to see if anyone else had the same issue, or knew if it was, indeed, a software issue before I spend $75 (I will be replacing the digitizer and LCD to get it working sooner rather than risk damaging the LCD while replacing the digitizer and having to wait another week). I don't want to send it in to LG because I bought it on ebay and have no proof of purchase for warranty, and I want it working sooner.
One thing I noticed that may help with diagnosing, the screen now looks different when off. Before, in direct sunlight, you could see the dotted matrix from the digitizer, and that was it. Now, I can see the retangular pattern across the entire screen. I checked my work G2 which I just received a few months ago and the rectangular pattern is only visible on the edges of the screen, the center is black with only the dotted matrix visible. Keep in mind, this is in direct sunlight. In shade, the rectangles are visible on both.
I'm hoping it's a software issue, but I'm wondering if the digitizer is starting to separate from the LCD. I don't see any acutal separation though.
Thanks for reading the book, and for any feedback. Also, because it will probably come up, I want to avoid upgrading if I can because the G3 is just a little too big.
I restored the phone to stock with the most up to date software. Still doesn't work. It appears to be a hardware issue. I really thought it was software because the dead spots word for a split second after turning on the phone. Oh well. Guess I'm going to order a new digitizer or LCD combo.
