Hey guys and gals. i'm done with BakedSnack. it started out well, but it's gotten so laggy that it's simply not usable. so i'm looking for suggestions for a new rom.
so far i've tried two OMJ's, three BakedSnack, a real early DamageControl and an early Fresh.
basically i'm looking for all the standard hardware(wifi, 4g, cam, etc) to continue functioning. i'd also like decent battery life(a whole day is more then enough) i don't want to lose my 50fps unlock. i'm also looking for something optimized for performance. apps opening and closing smoothly and quickly, screens animating smoothly and most importantly no lag while using swype(that happens now with BS and it's giving my all kinds of strange phrases when i try to type)
can someone suggest some new roms? and yes, i know i could go read through dozens of postings and look at features, but id much rather hear about their behavior in the real world.

that looks really promising! but do i need to install a new kernel? i'm currently running bakedsnacks latest and i'm worried that it's part of my speed problem
Honestly, if Baked Snack is lagging, you might have a different issue. Lag issues are a lot of time related to your kernel. Try flashing Netarchy's latest (not the beta but the stable one...I forget the numbers) and see how that goes. I've tried almost all of the ROMs but haven't found anything as good as BS.
it started out awesome, everything was slick and zippy. now, about three weeks in, it takes nearly 45 seconds to get handcent to open. then when it does open, i have to wait 15-20 seconds for the keyboard to appear. then it takes a bit for the keyboard to get situated cause as soon as i try swipping, the tracer is all over the place :-/
could it be that the kernel didn't flash properly? maybe if i reflash, it'll fix my speed issues?
This is after you reboot the phone every day?

yessir. i had to, just to get a little relief.
Have you tried a simple wipe of your cache or davlick? You will not lose valued info and it will speed up your system.
Laggy yea ok, not sure what your doing but its not on the rom's end . I ran 1.7 for while and it was rock stable no lag no stuttering etc etc
As other roms go try them all see what one fits the needs you have

+1 wipe cache and dalvik and switch to a dif kernel either kings or nets would dobjust fine.

Sounds like a kernel issue to me also. I was running one of his tweaked "best battery" kernels, and started noticing some lag after a while, so I switched to what was the default kernel in 1.5 and the lag disappeared. Also, if you've been running the same bs for a few weeks, then you probably haven't updated recently (like me). Maybe you'll have a better experience with 1.7.

See my sig with all my rom info and scores. Fresh is working lovely for me, and everything works. While some of the processor scores may be lower than what the Evo is capable of, I don't think those scores are bad when you consider I'm running Sense and I have a bunch of apps on my phone that are always hogging up resources (i.e. Facebook and Facebook for Sense, Lookout, eBay, Google Maps, HTC's mail, friendstream, Scoremobile widget, weather channel app, Swype, and a live wallpaper). These scores were achieved with Fresh's 3.1.0.2 rom, and I flashed the 3.2.0.0 which is based on the OTA that has not been released yet, but I lost many features with the new kernel from HTC that saves battery life, so I flashed king's kernel over it until the devs get a chance to play with the new kernel. All my root goodies are fully functional on Fresh 3.2.0.0 with Kings kernel.

Switch to a dif kernel? I had a similar issue w one of kings kernels builginh a crazy amount of dalvik thus slowing down my phone, switched to a dif one and problem solved.

whoops, my bad - see that in the third post. I got thrown off when I saw the comment about it being zippy at first but now you're having trouble 3 weeks in...
Try the wiping and maybe another kernel - say what you will about BS, but Hero does you give you kernel options!

i agree with the wiping before and choosing the proper kernel, also what resource intensive apps are you running? maybe you should post a list of installed programs, atrackdog allows you to export.
lastly, you can't shop without your wallet. *runs off*
I'm having no problems with BakedSnack 1.7 and kernel #5. It is the best Sense ROM, in my opinion.

I tried BS 1.7 on a fresh install today and I was not a personal fan. It would bog down and the camera could not focus for squat. Meh.
I really like evio because it does not resize pictures sent using the standard messaging client, a big bonus imo. Paired with BFS#6 and even though I keep trying other roms, I alwasy nand back to my evio.
How do you manage to get 50 FPS on your evo. i am also running the new fresh rom and i am only getting 30 fps. please advise

hey guys, i just had a thought. when i first installed baked snack i wiped with Clockwork recovery. now i'm reading reports that it may not be clearing the cache's like it's supposed to. could this be a cause??
What's the story on the app? Is it advisable to use it or not? Im running cm 7 btw.

Yes.
It was more critical on the Hero, where memory was more limited.
On the EVO, in this less limited setup. I still use it. It eliminates any lag in loading newly selected apps. It does cause Android OS to exercise its memory loading algorithm since all autokiller memory .. does is load different values for the OS to implement.

See thats my issue because sometimes it kills apps that are still active. Like twitter. It kills it and then i have to login again. It just changes the way android handles background apps.
But im beginning to suspect that it messes with the kernels. Hence i deleted it and enabled the long press to kill app on cm 7.

I was struggling with memory hence i used it, but now i just kill them myself.

RAM not used is wasted memory. You really do not need it if you are on a 2.2+ ROM. Memory management is great on Android now.

Except that Autokiller isn't a "task killer" per se. Not in the sense that they're typically thought of anyway. It allows you to adjust the threshold at which Android's built-in method kills apps. It's a tiered system. You can also adjust them with adb or terminal, but this basically provides a simpler GUI for achieving the same results. I use Autokiller, and it does seem to help speed things up a bit.
Say what you will, but my rooted EVO running 2.2 slows down at times and I open Task Killer only to find a dozen apps running, most of which I had not been using. After killing these apps, my phone is back to it's normal speed. I am not convinced 2.2 closes apps any better than 2.1 did.

And that's fine. Nobody needs to convince you otherwise. You have every right to kill apps whenever you want. Nobody's stopping you. I wouldn't recommend it, but I'm not going to come to your house and stop you. LOL.
Those dozen apps aren't "running". Not in the foreground anyway. Android has a tiered system to killing apps. A hierarchy if you will. Apps run in the background, setting themselves up for when they are "called upon", sort of like a cache. OK, not quite, but I said sort of . By killing those off, and then having them start again on their own, it actually uses more battery, when leaving them dormant in the background doesn't really harm anything.
I'm oversimplifying it here for the sake of easy digestion. Again, I'm not here to "convince" you, as choice is a good thing. But knowledge before making that choice is make that choice better. Read up on how Android works. It's quite interesting.
So I'm really struggling here. I hate using stock ROM's because the battery life really blows and they are slow.
I've flashed a number of custom ROM's that speed up the phone significantly and drastically improve battery life. The only problem is after a few days of use I almost always start to get intermittent problems like random reboots, force closes and texts not going through etc.
I always follow the install instructions to a "t" and I still get problems. I must be missing a step somewhere along the way or not fully understand the cons of running custom ROM's or something.

Having journaling enabled does help with data corruption if you find yourself having to start over a lot due to force closes.
Are you under/overclocking and/or undervolting at all? IIRC, stock speeds are ~400/1000Mhz.
Sounds like journaling is youjr answer. Make sure it is enabled and never pull the battery without shutting the phone completely down..after the vibration.

That's about the biggest lie over stock.. I started with a custom rom and it sucked the world's biggest donkey balls on battery life. It can last me the whole day on EC05. Just gotta learn how to optimize bro.

Run 'Fix Permissions' from Rom Manager. That has solved FC problems for me in the past.
Have you tried reformatting your SD card? If it has gotten mucked up, I imagine that could start causing issues.

Dont forget clearing dalvik and cache does also. I'm assuming people think that'll erase their stuff but It doesn't.

Edit: there should be a zip file that came with Epicurean to enable journaling.

I can't win. I enabled Journaling and my performance and speed went to crap. I guess I either have to suffer through the crappy stock rom or deal with force closes and random crapiness with a custom rom.

If you want to disable journaling then just make sure to never shutdown your phone improperly or drop it and keep good backups to restore from. I like to do a nand every 3 or 4 days then I can always do a restore advanced data only.

Are you serious? I don't ever drop my phone or shut it down improperly. I shouldn't have to back up my phone and restore twice a week in order to have a working device.I should be able to use this 400 dollar device without restoring it every fourth day or charging it twice a day.
Did you try the stock EG22 leak? Thats what I use, deodexed from decadence with the plus kernal from chris41g. It performs well and is the best battery life I ever had.

True, that is why your $400 device comes with stock ROMs that are RFS so none of these FCs happen unless a third party app is written poorly. If you run custom ROMs these are the chances and prices you pay.
A $2000 computer still requires regular backups for the very same reason.

BUT! Your forgetting something: you paid $400 for a phone
which Sammy provided to you via the vender of your choice with a STOCK ROM preloaded which works that way they have wanted.
Now from the moment you came over to the dark side and preloaded a rom there are good things and bad things that come with the package and you can't blame sammy for them.
Also, this is the world of trial and error: what may work fine for 500 phones will not work sometimes with yours. Every part of your phone though it could of been made the same day and from the same batch of my phone, are different and this will make you have different results.
Keep that in mind, your in a world that pose much risk to your device, but that's the fun part! Taking the risk and rolling with it!

I am running SFR 1.2 with journaling on and can get all day with 3 to 4 hours screen on time , no force closes or any problems and all the smooth and fast goodness that comes with the rom.

I don't have any problems with the stock rom. I'd love to have a stock rom that doesn't blow on battery life.
I understand that there are risks and pros and cons with custom roms but I can't seem to get a custom rom that is stable in any way shape or form. I assume that its my fault because I don't see anybody else having the same problems.
I guess I'm just looking for some help in getting a "half decent" custom rom experience but I can't even get that far. Without fail, every time I load a custom rom I get force closes and random issues. Then I go back to stock rom and I'm charging after two hours of use. I can't win.
@mark8503 I'll give that stock EG22 leak a shot and see what happens.

IMO, if turning journaling on slowed down your phone enough for you to notice, something went wrong
I've run the on and off zips, and the difference is hard to see
Also, since RFS has a journal feature, I can't see how EXT4 with journaling on would be slower, all other factors being the same
You want stable and solid, ODIN an EC05 modem, install SRF 1.2, do you voltage setting, and call it a day
If you want the bleeding edge, you just have to accept you need precautions, as on the edge, **** happens.

5:50 pm and battery is awesome! So far so good, this deodexed stock EG22 is running great, no FC's, no random reboots and battery life is excellent with chris41gs kernel. I just hope I didn't jinx it.
I'll report back after a few days of use.

Today i installed the CM-9 ROM by ErwinP on my 1 year old Wildfire.
Its good with some issues:
1. Camera doesn't work.
2. gallery has a bug. The albums were visible when we tap and hold on the screen and drag to left or right. when we lift the finger the screen goes blank.
3. menu loading is slow every time.
4. screen lock is present but you have to select slide in the lock screen settings.
For any further issues, i'll update here, as I am new to this forum.
Some facts:
The ROM after install takes 151.8 MB of internal memory.
I have custom MTD partition of 160MB and 15MB cache. I'm getting 290 of internal memory but the system initially is taking 40 MB(I don't know why.)
So, usable is 250MB internal memory.

first two issues you pointed are already given issues. read op to check common issues present as well as replacement app particularly for gallery and some other stuff.
other than that i think i dont have any issues like the other things you mentioned.
try 210/25 custom mtd partitions...it worked for me
@pauch_19: thanks for the information. I will look into alternatives to the bugs. Also you can try my custom MTD settings if you want more internal memory. Can you help me in getting the Market app to work(or any alternative app).

Did you flash Google apps first? Or just install 3.4.4 apk?
You need to flash gapps I think, don't bother with 3.4.4 you should get an auto update to the new play one eventually.

Yeah, you'll need the entire gapps since the market also relies on some extra stuff.
(I had the same problem when I just installed the market .apk on my Elf.)

that's probably the reason why you have more space on your internal memory because you forgot to flash gapps. incase you havent, flash gapps as what scratch and nejc suggested.. its also posted in op. its the latest gapps, about 52 mb in size so you will have to set your mtd partitions to default which is 250. im using the modified version which is just about 19 mb.

After getting the solution suggested by "Scratch0805". I again installed the ROM and along with the gapps at the same time. This time, I have taken the partition as 200 and 20. And after the boot, in terminal i found that system is using 186.4 MB. Still 13.6MB left.
Note: i installed the gapps with the size 51.88MB unmodified zip.
Now, everything works as it should have with camera as the exception.
One thing I want to know, what should be the CPU settings to follow for more than a day of battery life. Previously, i was using ON-DEMAND with 264-672MHz
and getting less than 22hrs of backup in CM7.

mine is 352/729 smartassv2. on minimal - regular use, mine last a day and a half..i really think it depends on phone usage.

I also used the smartassv2 governor and i found that backup decreases as it was in on-demand.
But, the smoothness in using gets better in smartassv2. So, can you tell me which governor will be better in terms of battery life and speed or any post where its mentioned.
atm i dont have too many apps which is also i think one reason why my phone is alot smoother, responsive and gives me a very decent battery life. In performance - processor, my cpu frequency minimum is 352 and 729 max. i used this values even when i was on cm7 nightlies coz its much stable..havent tried it at 768 though cpu governor is smartass v2.

I'm using the miui rom which is basically a modified version of cm9, I use setcpu just to set an underclock profile for when the screen goes off. My settings are on demand176/576 and powersave 176/352 as I've noticed that unless i'm straining the cpu by playing angry birds or watching a video with on demand my cpu tends to stay low doing normal things like making a phone call or checking xda but with smartassv2 it seems to jump high even when it doesn't really need to.

@pauch_19 : As for your settings goes, it good for performance. And you are also getting good life out of it. Nice to know that. I also read a post earlier where members are saying CM7 is better than SplashMOD. If its true, kindly tell me If you know which CM7 nightlies version do i use and how to remove the apps(I once used CM7 # 256,I didn't like the camera UI but it was smooth though) I then, switched to SplashMOD 1.6.
@Scratch0805 : I like the CPU settings you were using. I will definitely try those when I'll install the SPlashMOD v2.0 downloaded yesterday. But, I haven't tried on 176 because i thought then I'll get delay in getting calls and also lag in the background process. If these are not the issues you are getting, then I will must use these, and I can say that I will get at least 35+hrs of backup. And how MIUI is as compared to CM9?

Somewhere in themes and apps section is a thread for miui camera, its a flashable zip which will give you a much nicer camera ui than the cm7 one.
Miui is beautiful as a standalone Rom but gets even better if your prepared to put some effort in, it has the same bugs as cm9, but spend a few hours setting up workarounds and it runs like a dream, I only have 2 problems now 1 is the camera (nevermind tho, I have a digital cam anyway) 2 is if you like theming your phone miui is awesome for it, the only problem is it was designed for hdpi and gingerbread so all the top themes need modding to fit ldpi and ics.

@Scratch0805 : I don't have any knowledge of modding. But I will definitely try MIUI ROM and can you tell me which CM7 version you are using, just asking if I may try that one anytime soon along with the miui camera.

Personally I haven't tried Splashmod so I really couldnt say CM7 is better. I only tried CM7 and Im really impressed at how Cyanogen turned it into a very nice and fast rom. Before trying erwin's CM9 I was on nightly 256 build 14 and everything is working well.
I will try that one also with the miui camera Scratch0805 suggested. If all goes well, at the end of the day I'll be using CM7.
The camera should be fine on any rom I think, splashmod is basically either cm7 or oxygen (can't remember which one its based on atm as the "dev" changes his mind more often than I change my wallpaper ) with some apps removed or substituted for another. Underneath though it will always be cm7 or oxygen.
I'm on miui v4 atm and loving it but I'd recommend till you get into the swing either cm7 nightly 256 or keep an eye on the cm7 thread and look for the unofficial builds which have been built by erwinp and cobje, they may have a few bugs though I doubt anything serious otherwise they wouldn't release it + we are still clinging on to some fairly talented people that will most likely suss out the bugs and let everyone know how to fix them in the thread.

Well CM9 is really great, i love it, but sometimes my phone randomly reboot. Especially when i start phone.apk. Anybody with the same problem? I'm running on 352-710 MHz.
Also my GPS doesn't work.
Im on the stock .605 rom, and it never seems like there's enough free ram. Its frequently in the 30-40 range, applications never return to where they were and I have massive home screen redraws even with adw ex. Is there a solution? I have tweaked the minfree values, and tried v6 supercharger.

The best way to keep RAM clear is kind of a big commitment. And, this is my opinion. There are certainly people who would disagree with me.
First, people will say task killers are ineffective. This isn't necessarily true. The Linux architecture runs faster with more free memory. If an app uses 35MB memory average, it won't make too much of a difference if you're using 100/200MB of available memory. However, it will make a difference when Linux has to start paging and swapping.
MIUI has exemplary memory management. In addition, holding the 'home' key will bring you to a popup menu which has a built-in app killer. This will free up memory when your phone is running slowly.
My recommendation is to install MIUI and use that feature when you want.
Id rather keep it stock because I know it wont have major bugs like liberty did. I couldnt use sleep and that was an issue for me with school.
And I switched back to the stock launch. It seemed to help

Admittedly, Liberty is a bit buggy. Nice ROM, though.
An app killer widget will keep memory free.
Also, bear in mind, the operating system your phone comes with, by default, has extraordinary memory problems. You will, by default, have less RAM available.

If your rooted you can use titainuim backup pro to freeze apps that are draining your ram down likely there are some that run all the time that you dont use just remember to defrost them when you need them. Avoid uninstalling preinstalled stuff because it can cause a great deal of problems. If you find issues after freezing there is a likelyhood that what you froze is needed to make others run correctly. Task killing works for a bit but they will all resart after a bit again sucking your ram down
