[Shell Script] Setup a build environment for AOSP in a snap. - Android Software Development

If you are like me you are tired of reformatting to have to type in a long mess of stuff just to use adb well I have simplified it in a small sh file. It installs all the applications according to Android's website. I even updated the application names to the ones which Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit recognizes. It's an initial release feel free to modify.
Extract all files to your HOME dir, edit the username in phones.rules and execute in terminal
Find the most recent version on github (Link in my Signature)

You can't compile on windows, you need a linux distro or mac to do so!

Or a Linux distro running as a VirtualBox VM under Windows.

a change to your script...line 14
cd ~/sdk/tools
should be changed to
cd ~/android-sdk-linux/tools
anyone could probably figure it out but for those in need and confused..

Can someone repost this script? Some sort of FBI warning on megaupload atm.

I'll reupload when I get home tonight with updated version
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA

link has been updated. Thanks JKILO for pointing that out I must have overlooked that one.

hey there!
is there a possibility to get this script anywhere?
the link to github is dead and i can't find it elsewhere...
would be really cool!

You don't put the files on the storage card. You create a new directory in the root of file system called "Storage". This is confusing I know. You want a new folder called "Storage" on the *same level* as your "Windows" and "Storage Card". Then you put the files in Storage/Program Files/Haret.
Also if you are using the kernal from that site (i.e. pre built) you wont be able to do anything. On boot it will crash with a kernal panic. If you want a working version you have to compile your own kernal from the source in their repositry...and I ain't talking you through that! Even then you only get a command prompt
Lewis
WOW THX!!!
but now i have a kernel panic^^
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(1,0)

Thanks!
Grab a Linux liveCD like Knoppix www.knoppix.org or DSL - Damn Small Linux which is only about 60mb so will be a quick download, if you install it to a USB stick too then you can write files to it as well.
EDIT: Just realised that if all you want to do is to extract files then grab WinRAR it does most things like tarballs and the likes.
Yes you need Linux to compile a kernel - and a fair few dependencies.
I have attached a kernel i compiled (I *think* it's the latest). I can't see why this would be a problem as the source is open to anyone, but if it is let me know so I can remove it.
Lewis
interesting, can anyone post some screen shots of Linux on the wizard?
This one seems a bit more recent, and will get you a command line without a lot of hassle:

Hmm.. but the linux seems to be bit far fetch from being usable, huh? Usually, I'm good in getting stuff from the web, but it seems that this linwiz information is a bit hard to dig. I was just wondering, how functional is it currently? I know that there are a few linux for others Windows based phone and they have quite a history to them, so I presume there are some working linux that can be transfer to the Wizard?

Yeh it is. It's all on that webpage I linked a while back. The wiki is where you'll find instructions. If you find the readme file it talks you though it., but the compiled kernel I posted above is the latest anyway. It is only a command line and people are still working on it. Long way from being at the standard of other devices (Blue Angel, Universal etc.). But still, its hope! I for one can't wait.

[TOOL/KITCHEN] - Android Builder v.5 (Dead)

This project is no longer being updated. Feel free to use the code.
Android Builder (AB v.5)
kiel123 has joined the AB team!
Thanks to dsixda, Armin Coralic, and cteneyck. I do have permission to reuse their code.
Requirements:
Ubuntu Linux or variant
dsixda's HTC Android Basic Kitchen - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633246
In my crazy quest to learn more about Android, I decided to create a companion to dsixda's kitchen that will take some of the drudgery out of downloading and compiling AOSP and the HTC kernel.
Here's what the current menus looks like:
Code:
Select the device that you would like to build for.
1) HTC Droid Eris
a) About Builder
0. Exit
Please enter option number:
and then
Code:
1. Sync AOSP - Cupcake (1.5) repo
2. Sync AOSP - Donut (1.6) repo
3. Sync AOSP - Eclair (2.1) repo
4. Sync AOSP - Froyo (2.2) repo
0. Exit
Please enter option number:
You can follow these two steps, and you will get a freshly compiled, but unsigned ROM in the original_update folder. After running it through the kitchen, it boots up just fine. Of course, most of the hardware doesn't work. That's the part that I am working on now (seriously, I am). I've been working on this for a while, because as I said - this is really about me learning. If I can make a tool that someone finds useful, then great!
Install instructions:
1) download and unzip dsixda's kitchen to whatever directory you want
2) download Android Builder into kitchen's scripts/plugins folder and unzip
3) back out and start the kitchen
4) select 'Run plugin scripts' from Advanced menu and select 'Android Builder'
5) you're there!
NOTE: This will try to install/update all of the packages that it needs, including Java5. Please look at the code so that you know what it's doing. That's just a good general practice with any code that you can actually look at and that you have to run as root...
Future plans:
1) add more kernels (devices)
2) add more vendor trees (goes along with devices)
3) add more repos (CM5, CM6, AOSP Master)
I hope someone finds this useful, and feel free to post useful suggestions/bug reports.
DOWNLOAD - (https://github.com/gnarlyc/android_builder)
CHANGELOG -
v5. - kiel123 re-wrote v.4 as a plugin to dsixda's kitchen with me testing afterward, minor fixes, removed Java6 as no longer needed by kitchen
v.4 - re-wrote to add structure to support more devices in the future
added option for Cupcake, Donut, and Froyo
added .config files that enable touchscreen in kernel by default
v.3 - unreleased build
v.2 - corrected misspellings in code and dialogs
added sudo to launch setup script (Still need to sudo bash first. Sorry.)
v.1 - initial release
Very nice. I have been doing the same. I have used darchstar's post here as the basis of my work. But, I am always glad to look how others are doing things. Thanks for the post.

Thanks for the thanks! I don't quite get the vendor tree thing, but I just need to look at it again a few times. And, that's where I'm at. It would be really neat to be able create a working AOSP ROM from scratch with minimal manual intervention. It might not be possible, but I haven't found that out yet. (But wait! If you can do it manually, it can be scripted. Right?)
there's typo in your install script
look for line: android_builder*
should be android-builder*
and your install script should use mv command instead of cp to avoid files duplication
EDIT: also you should use sudo command along with ./ab_setup script or include within script as well.
When i ran ./abmenu and i get this message
Code:
Please copy 'menu-kd' to the root of your kitchen folder with 'menu'
menu-kd?.... don't you mean abmenu? turned out it was looking for menu file which i had it renamed to kitchen_menu but I fixed that on my part and all is working well.
Dont let any of my criticism scare you away, I can see there's a lot of potential use for this scripts, great start by the way.

I renamed all of the scripts at the last minute and thought that I had them fixed. I'll make the corrections and repost. The goal is to get this thing working well. Your criticism is just more motivation. Thanks!

The current 'internal' build works with Cupcake (1.5), Eclair (2.1), and Froyo (2.2). It's not ready to release though. Give me another week or two. I'm working on proprietary bits now, so that you get a more usable ROM from the start.
Although from your sig, it appears that you don't have an Eris, so you probably don't care much about it's proprietary bits. If you want it to get Froyo instead of Eclair, you can just change 'eclair' to 'froyo' in the script that creates the repo.
I'm with you on Froyo. I have a feeling in a month or two very few people will want to run a pre-Froyo ROM. It's really nice.
rm error on install
i keep getting "rm: cannot remove './bkup': No such file or directory"
the file is there untill i run the ./install script then it disappears and shoots me an error any help would be appriciated

That files was used by me while developing the code. It's not needed. I'll fix the install script for v.5, but if you really want to fix the script now... Just remove the line -
'rm ./bkup'
from the 'install' script
You should still be able to start Android Builder by typing './abmenu', as long as it's in the same folder with the kitchen's menu. The error shouldn't matter.

Have you thought of making this into a .plugin file that can be placed in the scripts/plugins folder of the HTC Android Kitchen? Then that way you won't need to update your scripts each time I update my kitchen
In my thread I could provide a link to your tool, so that people can add that plugin if they want.

The thought has occurred to me.
Give me a bit. A link in your thread would be great. It might even motivate me to add more devices. Getting stuck on adding Eris proprietary bits has lead me down the road of making a ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=725447) and documenting the process. I'll get back to Android Builder soon though.
Ok, so...
TO-DO
-------
1) rewrite AB as a plugin to dsixda's HTC Android Kitchen
2) add proprietary bits for Eris
3) add more devices
4) add CM repos
5) add Gingerbread repo
6) add compatibility with more distros

Interesting... I've tested from a freshly installed Ubuntu installation several times. It should install everything you need.
You could try 'update-alternatives --config java' and let me know what it says. You could also look for a file called 'setup_ran' in the root of the Kitchen, and delete it. Start './abmenu' after that and try again.
thanks for answering. Could the problem be that i installed it on cygwin.

Yes. Android Builder will not work under cygwin. I don't know that it ever will. That's on the TO-DO list, but it's so far down that it's not on the posted TO-DO list.
I've only tested under Xubuntu 10.04 and minimal Ubuntu 10.04.
If you happen to work it out on cygwin, let me know! I'm sure others would be happy to have the option. Heck, I might even be. I'm mainly using Ubuntu because of AB anyway. (Although, it is kind of growing on me.)
thanks i will look in to it.

make sure you have java5 and java6 jre/jdk installed. it should work then. i had a similar issue the first time through... took it literally 10hours plus, then output was the 1.1k AOSPBase.zip file.
manually installed all java components, and everything worked perfectly then (and took half the time)

[Q] Debian on Milestone 2

Is it possible to run a version of Debian Linux on the Milestone 2?
It seems people have had success on other devices, aided in part by the use of custom firmware that gives access to bash, etc.
lanrat.com/android/debian
Any information or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Well it depends on how you define "running debain". I have a debian chroot on my milestone2 I can run all of the programs in the debian suite. Openssh, openvpn, qemu-i386. I never thought I would have an arm processor in my cellphone that could run I386 software (ventrillo specifically)
Now running debian kernel and as a root file system... crack the bootloader first and then we can talk about this.
My recommendation is root your phone and learn about debootstrap.
As always, this isn't for the newbie. So, any damage to your phone, software or mental stability is not covered.
Sent from my MotoA953 using XDA App
I created a debootstrap image in ubuntu 10.10, but i'm not sure where to mount the image or how i'd go about chroot-ing it for use as a debian file system.
Do you have access to all ARM-compatible linux binaries on your phone now?

Hi Haitala , I have successfully installed debian lenny in ME722(milestone2 chinese version),
please visit: h-t-t-p://bbs.gfan.com/android-1211243-1-1.html, (replace h-t-t-p with http), this post provided a quick install method which required just 2 files:debian.img and bootdebian script. Download and copy debian.img to /sdcard/, copy bootdebian to /data/local/bin/.
Some pics avaliable on: h-t-t-p://bbs.gfan.com/android-1193358-1-1.html
You'd better read it via google translation.
The major difference to before is that Milestone2 doesn't support ext2 but ext3, so I created an ext3 IMG file and mount to /data/local/debian/, and then it works!
Would you upload the chinese files on another server, like DropBox, MediaFire or MegaUpload? I can't download, the wait time is 27 days... ¬¬

Not able to get it work
Hi,
I have a routed Moto A953 (from Expansys.com) The kernel version is : 2.6.32.9-gd2377eb
And I am trying to chroot Debian/Ubuntu in it..
I built the ubuntu.img rootfs for chroot in Ubuntu 11.04 via rootstock ! And I am not able to get it to work.. I am able to run all the mount commands, but when I try to chroot /data/local/ubuntu to /bin/bash, I get an error: "Segmentation Fault"
Any ideas?
I am thinking, may be its the kernel? Ubuntu Natty's kernel is 2.6.39+ any help?
Or could anyone, please share their working rootfs image?
thanks

I downloaded debian.img from h-t-t-p://bbs.gfan.com/android-1211243-1-1.html
(I was not able download the bootdebian so I am not which commands he is using to chroot )
Anyway, the good news is I was able to "chroot", but the bad news is... something is wrong in the .bashrc of the debian.img ; So so none of the commands work in the debian shell.. I am currently trying to build a working Ubuntu rootfs myself !
And its working..
Finally I figured it out..
I have Ubuntu Chroot working in my Motoroala Milestone 2 A953 !!
It took a while, but working great now..
Anyone need any help, let me know !
cheers

Q. I get the error - 'java' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
A. You either, do not have the Java installed or have not added java to your PATH in Environment Variables. Either install Java or add Java to your PATH.
Thanks dude.
Any feedback, problems or suggestions?
wow it works! Easy to use! thanks!
Thank you.
Are there any Linux wizards out there who can help me port this?
New version 0.3 available.
tried it all i get is cannot find specified path
edit: forget that i fixed it had to modify the it as im using jdk 1.7.0
I don't know why I changed it, but in v0.3 it assumes you have installed the Java Development Kit (JDK) on a 64bit system (it mirrors my system rather than a universal approach).
If you have java added to your windows PATH, try using these files, just extract these to the same directory and run these instead.
works great! small suggestion is for the batch file to ask for the location of your jdk.
also have error checking as the batch said it worked but didnt at first (due to the location of the jdk)

Your right, I wrote this quickly to fulfil my needs on my system.
I will update to v0.4 with error checking & JDK checking soon.
Thanks for the suggestion.
EDIT: Seems you beat me to the reply leith. If your JDK is added to your windows path then it shouldnt matter whether its 32 or 64 bit. When I updated from v0.2 to v0.3 I used my personal build rather than the universal "java" approach. I can see that as explicit paths are specified in the .bat. v0.4 will add error checking and will most probably include a stripped out java package.
awesome! keep up the good work dude

Debian Buster WSL2 Kernel / ROM Builder [replaces VM]

Okay I don't have enough time to update this whole description, no one volunteered to host the VM so now I only have a Debian Buster WSL2 (Windows 10 latest) build environment. You can make kernels and ROMs from it. It has a built in XFCE4 and all the features listed below. It will build kernels for you from source and place them in AnyKernel3 zip files ready for flashing in the ~/ directory. Build scripts are provided for Op8T 5G custom and GPUOC RadioActive Kernels from my GitHub (modded for performance + battery). You can use this guide and get full audio and a GUI and all you need to build.
Try out this build for Debian Buster for WSL2:
First you need to ensure you are on a recent build of Windows, go to windows Updates in settings and download the latest.
Next open a Powershell Command Prompt in Admin mode. Type:
dism.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:Microsoft-Windows-Subsystem-Linux /all /norestart
Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName VirtualMachinePlatform -NoRestart
Restart your PC, then get back into an Admin Powershell prompt and type:
wsl --set-default-version 2
Next you can download this tar.gz distribution, it's quite big (6GB zipped -> 14GB unzipped). Apparently you can import a tar.gz directly, so I changed it from a .zip file to .gz: https://mega.nz/file/DkARXIjD#hGu8TjxaA__YrRsfqfWJw9-2ViyyntyK5U8JdClor6A
Easily move WSL distributions between Windows 10 machines with import and export!
wsl --import <DistributionName> <InstallLocation> <Full path to .tar/.tar.gz FileName>
After import, you should type: login: user password: user (also the sudo password) change the Global Git settings to your own email and username.
Open the command line.
Set your username: git config --global user.name "FIRST_NAME LAST_NAME"
Set your email address: git config --global user.email "[email protected]"
Then if you want to set up SSH between your WSL2 instance and NoMachine, download NoMachine here for your host PC: https://www.nomachine.com/download/download&id=8 then follow the steps to generate an SSH key, which will be located at ~/.ssh.
ssh-keygen -m PEM -t rsa -b 4096
Use the directory default ~/.ssh/
Then copy this file: ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub to ~/.nx/config/authorized.crt
In the NoMachine GUI, you should select Configuration, Use a key based authentication key which you provide, then provide the path to the private key \\wsl$\debian\home\user\.ssh\id_rsa and check the box Import the key to the connection file.
To get to the XFCE4 GUI, you should type login: user password: user, then run /.nomachine.sh
It will post the IPV6 address you need to enter into the configuration into NoMachine on Windows 10. It changes every time you open it (WSL2 problem).
Now you should be able to connect to the GUI and use all the dev tools built in. Or you can just use the command line if you're more comfortable there. You'll probably need to do some more Googling to get everything setup the way you like. There are 2 examples in this file for an Op8T RadioActive modded kernel from my GitHub repos with a ./Build-Clang12.sh script you can use to see how to build a kernel. It it fully automatic. It will generate the zip specified in that file in the ~/ directory which can be flashed to a device via EX Kernel Manager or FK Kernel Manager. Best of luck!
Great job mate. I hope this is the kick off and boost up kernel development on the MI9 ??
Now THAT is what XDA is all about.
I'd like to get in to this type of development but simply don't have the personal time right now.
Hope this helps boost community support a bit.
This must've taken some time. Hats off to you sir.

Thanks Dave - this is the absolute easiest way to build a kernel. Yes it took forever to get working, a lot had to do with bad Xiaomi source code and Android 9 package requirements for building kernels. You can simply download, install, click Goto Build, click on QClang8_Build, copy/paste it's text from Geany into the open terminal, sit back and wait for the build to finish. Then once it completes, you click on Built Kernels and you have your image ready. A few more steps obviously outlined in the post to transfer to the host machine (cp Image-dtb /media/sf_VMxfer) and pack via Android Image Kitchen, copy to the device, and flash via TWRP. Most features require Magisk patching as well to enable altering in a kernel manager. The mentioned repo (mrslezak) has Fsync toggle, 830GPU overclock, and F2FS file system support (Mauro TWRP has just enabled it, so I'm using it now). I should note as well that this kernel has only been tested on MIUI and Xiaomi.eu builds thus far (anything based on Xiaomi MIUI should work - MIUI Global Dev, China Dev, Xiaomi.eu, MiGlobe, RevolutionOS, etc. as long as it is Android Pie).
I'm waiting on others to jump on board!!!! Hopefully it happens
Excellent guide, will work for almost all pie devices!
Great work OP :highfive:

Hi, @mslezak @acervenky Can you help me to build kernel for Stock Miui 10 for K20/Mi9t . I followed your guide setup all requirement i just changed the device code name from cepheus to davinci everything went well kernel complied and also created the boot.img with AIK but after flash it is through back me to recovery.
Can you Please help me with this.
@acervenky fixed that by applying the patch in the Desktop Mi9_Build_Tools/Required_Patches_to_Compile_Xiaomi_Source/cosmin_kernel-module.c copy that to /kernel/module.c, he can chime in here. Or check out his repo he has one on Github that compiles already QUAX kernel I believe with a bunch of stuff added already over stock.
Good job. Compiled a kernel for mi9t pro (raphael) with your detailed guide.
Can you help with "make modules" command?
I need to make xt_HL.ko module, but it not compiling ((
Not needed anymore, made it successfully.
Can you compile q kernels with this?

Yes! Just don't replace .dtsi and module.c files for now.

New Q build VM coming soon. GCC10 x64 and Arter97 GCC9 x32 toolchain.
Just a notice here I have a VM almost ready to upload that can build Mi9 source. It's a ton of patches to stock code but I'll setup a repo with them already applied.
Can i use anykernel to make a flashable zip? Or do i have to use a diffrent approach?
https://mega.nz/#!voJEGIRC!r4FcV6zUlVbFExcidhL9JmgVZlu3IscYH-S5XlnTUJI Android Q VM - expands to 40gb on your hard drive so you don't run out of space. Builds a GCC10 patched version of Xiaomi Cepheus and Raphael kernels from my repo, forked from Xiaomi and commits outlining every step needed to get it to build. https://github.com/mrslezak/Cepheus-Raphael-Q-GCC10
Yes AnyKernel3 is the easiest

Sure AnyKernel3 is easy, take someone's kernel zip, insert your Image-gz.dtb or Image-dtb into the root of the zip, delete the other kernel, and you should be able to flash it.
got some compile errors today when i tried your wm
/home/user/toolchains/aarch64-linux-elf/bin/aarch64-linux-elf-ar: kernel/resource.o: No such file or directory
I'd first try a: make clean; and: make mrproper;....
But here's more info:
Double click the GoTo Build icon, a terminal will open in the source directory. Then in the terminal: cp /home/user/Desktop/Build GCC10 Cepheus.sh .; chmod +x "Build GCC10 Cepheus.sh"; ./"Build GCC10 Cepheus.sh"; Once done the kernel will be in /home/user/Cepheus-Raphael-Q-GCC10/out/arch/arm64/boot/Image.gz-dtb. /out9TP/ for Raphael, just substitute the build script you need.
If it then still won't build, you'll have to grab the repo again. Type: git pull
Or the safest is a complete re-download: cd ..; rm -rf Cepheus-Raphael-Q-GCC10; git clone --depth=1 https://github.com/mrslezak/Cepheus-Raphael-Q-GCC10.git and repeat the prior copying of the build script to the source directory.
I tested this last night and it worked. If I tried to just drag the script into a terminal window it failed. There could be some dirty files in there not sure how that happened, but deleting and cloning again definitely works. I built both Cepheus and Raphael kernels last night in the VM off a fresh clone of the repo. I'd update I but it literally takes 6hrs + since the files are huge and take forever to compress and upload to Mega. And I have to delete so much off my VM and SSD just to do it. This way you learn something too
I first drag n dropped the file when i got the error, then i remembered when i compiled kernels for my raspberry pi's it also failed if i draged n dropped my build script so i did it the proper way and it worked
Thanks for your WM it's working great

Could you upload the VM to Google Driver? Thank you!

Yeah if you buy me Google drive space I'd be more than happy to upload to Google Drive. I'm out of space man. If you run Windows 10 Preview WSL2 I have a 3.2GB build that kills everything else out there.

Do you have WSL2 tar file that can build Kernel?
