It is in both the Android Market and Amazon Market so it works with other Android tablets. As for ROMs, it would be like any other app.

ok first of all, why are you talking about a media access control? it's not relevant to this discussion about macs. second, you need to get a new mac. the mac minis are great and are only about 600 bucks. you have an incompatible computer. incompatible computer is incompatible.

Unless you manage to get Google to write an SDK for PPC.

So, it wouldn't.
The Linux SDK is still x86 only.
Yet again Apple efs its customer base
You could possibly get away with some kind of Virtual Machine, but I have a feeling vbox won't run on your architecture either.
And $600 is WAY to much to pay for a Mini.
Hell buy a $200 netbook and install Ubuntu with a Mac theme - you can't tell a difference other than the awesome that is radiated from a Linux machine VS a mac - unless you are just a linux guy and know how it works...then you could tell a difference....ok so there are some differences...but buy a white HP netbook and slap one of those Apple stickers they give you with an IPod on it...then you cant tell a difference....well you still could but its getting arguable then.
This is why the only apple product I will ever own is my 160gig Ipod classic - and when it dies Ill just build a new EEE PC for my car.
only reason i use a mac is because i need software such as final cut pro and aperture which are not found on windows or linux.
There's no way to use the SDK on a PPC Mac without reengineering the whole thing from scratch. The PPC is a big-endian processor, and x86 is little-endian, so your byte-ordering and structure sizes are different. If you've ever delved into cross-platform compiling (OpenWRT is a good example), you know that's its a major PITA. I've adapted a few small pieces of C code to successfully compile on PPC, and its no joy.
You're going to be SOOL on the virtualization front as well. There was a version of VirtualPC years ago that performed software x86 emulation on the PPC platform, but performance was abysmal even running Win98 on my Dual G5. I doubt that a modern Windows OS would even run at all. None of the current virtualization products will run on the PPC platform, as they all tie in to hardware virtualization support at some level (processor extensions or otherwise).
I truly feel your pain in this situation. I have a Dual G5 Power Mac that's still humming along happy as can be, but I can't run any current software on it. My iBook G4 isn't quite as happy these days, but is still 100% functional. Next to my G5, I have a cheapo Dell that I finally broke down and bought to power-up when I need to run x86 stuff. I recently picked up a used MacBook Pro, and WOW I can't believe what I was missing out on. The performance is night and day better than my G5, and all current software runs on it beautifully. With VMware Fusion installed, it can do anything I need. I hate to say it, but you need to upgrade.

Probably what you're gonna want to do first is ask yourself:
"What do I use my computer for"
There are some Linux distributions specifically designed to work as media servers, as video/image manipulation stations, and basically just about any specialization you can imagine.
If you're answer is
"I just want to use it"
Chances are Ubuntu or Mint is the way to go.
If your answer is
"MUST HAVE THE FASTEST NO MATTER WHAT"
A Gentoo based distro is the way to go.

Could we Windows 7 - I know heracy for most

Hi Guys
I like the design and spec of Adam but I would also need proper usability from it. By proper I mean word, excel, usb to Com cables in general Windows 7.
Would it be possible to install Windows 7 on the device and how hard would it be?
I have not see the device in action so does anyone know does it have PC style bios or more like bootloader on smartphones?
TheDeadCpu said:
That would be hard. Not impossible.
The thing is I doubt anyone will actually waste hundreds of hours to get a worse operating system running.
(I say it's worse because it's not tablet optimized)

Not worse, just heavier because more usable as PC. For me Android is the worse one as yo have no proper apps that make it usable as PC.
As said if I could get ubuntu to run with office on it I would not think about windows 7 but I can not even do that.
Andoid main problem is the same as one on apple ipad it is a OS for phones.
Adam started out as a dual boot Linux/ Android tablet.
Have not heard anything re Linux boot for a while though.

I seen on forum for ink that they have image for ubuntu but still no office on it.
Grr I always loved tablet idea TBH even when they were called slates.
Until late I had my HP TC1100 and was very happy but it is lucking now in performance for win7 and office 2010. Also it is so "used" now that paint is coming off.
Oh well will have to wait for a win7 dedicated tablet.
The operating system has to be ARM based meaning Windows 7 will never work (at least properly).

Well since they patented Windows 7 core to work with Arm in December one would hope that will be overcome. Apparently there will be al ighter version of Win7 for ARM based systems. Hmm we will see but fro now HP Slate 500 is the best bet.
Ubuntu for arm, meego and basicaly any linux distribution that has an arm port could end up on the adam. If you prefer a more desktop like UI plain ubuntu could work, use openoffice.
Most applications written for linux are easily ported to other CPU architectures.

Well if I wanted to use open office I wuld not ask for windows 7 would just go to ubuntu directly. Openoffice suck badly no matter what people say, if you do tons of docs, formatting and scripting in excel you need proper, real office.
Anything else I could deal with on linux just not lack of that.
I know this thread is old, but with Windows 8 (shall work on ARM) on sight, is there any chance to run that on the adam?
I'm asking cuz i'm looking for a tablet that is a) readable in straight sunlight and b) offers at least part-time Windows-capabilities.

[Q] Dual boot Acer A500 Android/win 7

When I was at CES the Acer A500 was dual booted with windows 7 and android honeycomb along with a few other competitors. Anyone have any idea how to do this?

Since when you can install win7 on an ARM Cpu.
And why Acer release 2 model A500 and W500
different hardware, different OS....
I don't think that was a Dual boot, but 2 different machine you saw.
I don't think we will have Windows on A500.
Yep it must have been the W500 if it had Win 7 on it... however Windows 8 is supposed to support ARM processors.

Windows 7 emulator on transformer?

Ok I have no desire to run windows 7 mobile here, but I do need the desktop operating system. I really still need windows for various real estate apps that are only available for windows. So does anyone know of an emulator for windows that will run on any android device, honeycomb or gingerbread?
It'd be nice.. I need windows to run Ragnarok Online.
...but more to the point, to emulate something, you'd need something with massively stronger hardware, right?
Windows wont run on arm cpus and there arwnt ant android virtualization apps that i know of. Maybe once we get linux on here you could install virtualbox so you can run windows that way lol

Correct, because even if we would have Virtualbox available, we wouldn't have enough RAM.
If a small Windows 7 machine is needed, I would recommend the Asus 1201L, which I bought for my sweetheart. It has HD Ready resolution and comes with Win7 Home instead of the horrible Starter Edition.
It came with 1 GB RAM and was horribly slow, but after upgrading to 3 GB even Photoshop CS3 runs fine ... I wouldn't install current 3D games though

Go for a netbook then:
ASUS Transformer 16GB ~$500AUD
ASUS Eee PC you can easily find ~$300AUD+
Plus, there are 14" or so laptops for under $500AUD. I'm sure it'd be similar in the States.
But at OP: If you really wanted to run Windows 7 apps, a honeycombe tablet isn't really a very good option... Your best bet, if you don't want to VNC, would be to install Ubuntu and run Windows apps under Wine on your TF (see the developement thread for instructions).
Until Windows 8 ARM comes out, there's not much of a possibility of running Windows 7 on your tablet (unless you get one of those horrid x86 tablets...).
Well what I meant was windows tablets over android tablets. I was looking at a butt ugly, resource hog, underpowered windows tablet today and it was like $999. Almost $1000! Windows has got to be kidding me! And the touch screen experience was a joke! It was all over the place, inaccurate, and slow!
I've definitely got to look into getting that unbuntu that runs windows apps. That's all I wanted to do! Could care less if its windows running it or not, just as long as it works!

Heheh... I know what you mean about the current Windows tablets
Anyway, yeah about Wine under Ubuntu: Wine isn't a perfect application. It doesn't enable you to run all Windows apps under Linux, but it does run quite a few usefull ones (Office is pretty much perfect in my past experience, along with quite a few games).
But yeah, as Aymara said, not too sure how the Wine experience would be on a tablet. Never really used it with this kind of hardware... very big newbie at ARM Linux, but you never know... it could run okay. Haven't tried yet.
Ok then. Well, I've never really tried a remote desktop app. Do they work well? Or are they glitchy and unusuable?
Which one would everyone recommend as a good option? Preferably something free and reliable, haha if those 2 can be in the same sentence here.

There's already one bundled with your Transformer. On your PC, head on over to http://www.splashtop.com/remote/browser/download?from=product and install that product. Then on your Transformer, open the "My Cloud" app (I think that's the name), and there's a remote control tab there. If you're connected to the same wifi network as your computer, it should automatically find your computer and allow you to connect.
You could get the cheapest windows laptop that can run well, and then get bluestacks to run android apps on windows. It's kind of the reverse of what you're trying to do, but it'd kill two birds with one stone
http://www.bluestacks.com/
Why Wine? Ram aside it's for x86 only... and if it did emulate that architecture the speed would be horrible, it's not just cool to virtualize instead of emulating, there is an impressive performance difference.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using Tapatalk
Microsoft announced Windows 8 tablet a week or so ago. You might want to see how that turns out. It's suppose to run all windows apps.
I think you're all still forgetting 1 major thing...all the windows apps are written for x86....what makes you think that even with Wine, you could run an x86 program? You'd be emulating the Windows environment with an ARM cpu, but you wouldn't be emulating the machine code for x86. You'd probably still need some kind of emulator to make that work. You'd still have to emulate x86 in some way shape or form. Honestly, I've looked into Windows, and there are some decent ports (look up QEMU, the russians managed to get a good thing working with Win95 there, but it doesn't work well on the Transformer) but it's really just not worth it. It's a gimmick and nothing more.
To the OP, if you really want a Windows tablet, check out the new MSI Wind 110W. Windows 7 tablet, 4gb of ram, 32 gb ssd, $599 (USD). It's probably the closest thing to what you will want.

[Q] Kindle Fire with Win 8?

I've read a number of posts regarding the many difficulties involved in porting Windows 8 to the Kindle Fire. Is it conceivable that a future incarnation utilize the Windows 8 os?
Will not be possible. Ever. Hardware using windows 8 must be blessed by Microsoft themselves, and there are many, many other protections with it to ensure that it is only installed on authorized hardware. Sorry, its not going to happen.

I would not jump to that, yet. Windows, by definition, is more of a universal operating system VS Mac OS X. Windows can run legally in a Mac, but OS X cant be run legally on a PC. Windows was made for a wider range of hardware, and likewise, in theory, could run on a completely unauthorized device, maybe through hardware bypass. Let us see. Earlier, no one thought this $200 amazon tablet could run ICS (nearly) perfectly. They thought it was absurd. But we, as a community, of devs, contributors, and noobs, proved them wrong. And we could do it again with Windows 8

It would be interesting to know the reason why someone would like to have Windows on the Kindle. Kindle is cool. Android is cool. Windows is not that cool any more. I am a user, a noob from my head to the tail. I judge by coolness.
Windows 8 is not Window Desktop
Just to be fair, you can't really compare Windows 8 on a fire to Windows and in what you have seen for years on the desktop computer. It will not have any of the Win32 code in it because a Fire is a non-Intel CPU. Instead Windows 8 where talking about here will be the predecessor to the Windows Phone OS that you see on the Windows 7 phone. Here you are talking about a completely different experience. A Windows 7 phone can be argued as a much better touch interface than Android and possibly even the famous iPhone. It hasn't gotten much popularity because Microsoft missed the ball in the "phone war", but anyone I've seen who has a Windows Phone loves it and swears by it. So porting Windows 8 to a fire if it can be done would be actually be pretty awesome. If you don't believe me go to your nearest cell phone shop and play with a Windows Phone.
As for me, I have an android phone myself and like it very much. So I'm not preaching Windows 8. It was just sensing a slanted opinion of the topic based on Microsoft's flaws in a complete different market, which it has nothing to do with this topic.
Windows RT is supposed to support ARM architecture processors which means that, technically yes, it could work.
Now considering that drivers are proprietary, porting may be much more difficult unless Microsoft already did their legwork.
Functionally, the KF may be underpowered based on the hardware requirements for Windows RT.
Which leads to the question of, do you need Windows RT for your KF, or do you just want too say that it can be done?
Even if you still believe Windows is some unstable, immature operating system, in what possible way would porting it to any platform be detrimental to you? Name one. If you don't like it, don't do anything. How easy is that? Personally, I'd love to see it running on existing hardware simply because it's that much less I have to spend on more test equipment for development. It wasn't that long ago people were *****ing and complaining about porting "that Android garbage" to their Windows Mobile devices like it was the end of their world. I doubt it'll ever happen but if it did, I'd be first in line to see if it ran on any of my devices.

Wooaahh. Hold on there Discussion Police. No need to get all bent out of shape over this. I don't remember seeing anyone here being personally attacked for their interest in using the Kindle Fire to run Windows 8. I only see people sharing their opinions on whether it would be a good idea or not. It's strange, how you took it so personally.
That being said...
Besides the potential of modifying Microsoft's software and porting it to a device that's not approved being ILLEGAL, you still have do deal with the lack of support, sketchy business practices (legitcheck, anyone?) and serious privacy concerns.
So, it is my absolutely permitted yet Not So Humble Opinion that supporting a company that has probably done more to damage the open source community than all others combined is probably not a good idea. Or maybe that's just me.
But hey, if you'd like to continue paying $300+ for a sub standard OS....
(getting off my soapbox now)
Just to share my opinion, I have never touched Windows OS for a long long time and my life was so much better after that (productivity). My old lappy was so crappy the last time I loaded it with Windows, it's slow and so limited in what it can do. After I loaded my lappy with Arch Linux, all I can say is WOW, the speed was way way superior compared to Windows, and there're basically nothing you can't do with Linux. So yeah, I don't think Win 8 is a good option for Kindle Fire, especially with limited ram size like 512MB. I'd go crazy if someone able to bring a pure linux distro to Kindle Fire though
If you want windows 8 to say that you have it, it makes sense. But the developer who does port it will probably get sued by Microsoft.
Next, based on system requirements, performance with the OS is most likely going to be unbearable.
Which then again leads me to the question of what are you expecting out of a port of windows 8/RT?
If windows 8 gets ported to kindle fire, the viruses won't be far behind. I'm a pc tech shop owner i love windows for the fact it keeps me busy.
Curious as to what os you guys run.
I use osx and Linux mostly & windows for scanning hard drivez from other computers.

Well I've been using Windows 8 for awhile now, and I love it. Now would I want out on my kindle fire, not sure. The version of windows 8 that will support hardware the fire hasn't been released yet, all we have is Intel based version. I can tell you thou as a tablet based Os is its brilliant, and when the full version is released, I will be picking up a windows 8 tablet. Haven't made decision yet whether I will go will arm or Intel based. Arm will have limitations over its Intel counterparts, but I'm sure the battery life will be far better.
