Windows 3.1 - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

I wasn't sure where to put this but oh well, if it shouldn't be here a mod can move it
Anyway I just wanted to say, I managed to install windows 3.1 on my tab through dosbox with the original windows setup files. There isn't much use for it but it works fine and can install old dos games. I am going to try the same process for windows 95, now that would be cool. I read it has been done on android. But will have to see after I extract the win 95 setup files.
Also if anybody asks the question what is the point of doing that?
The answer is because I can and I want to ;-)

Cool. I'd like to see XP installed if at all possible after you attempt 95 (and succeed at it) .

Xp would be impossible really. Not by any meens I am aware of anyway. Pretty sure I can get 95 working. Still trying to find a working win95 image. All the .img files I have tried are missing the boot file. I am about to start looking again Also win 98 may be possible, sombody managed to boot it on another android device (can't remember what it was) but it was so laggy it was un useable but with the tab 10.1's power maybe it could work. Don't know though, it wasn't run through dosbox anyway.

Well done. It would have been slightly more impressive if you managed to install it off original floppies!

It was a Samsung Moment, oddly enough, if I remember right.

Not sure. It has been done on nokias n900, psp and ps3. I have managed to get win 95 working on my tab but all from an image and not with dosbox so can't access my own files like I can on win 3.1. I also got windows 3.11 going in dos box wich is a bit better than 3.1 with a few improvements. For 95 I used files for another android phone and it uses libsdl to load the image of 95, but like I say that way I can't access my sd card through 95, but if I get it going in dosbox my sd is mounted as the hdd. I think I can extract the image and add things too it like game files and stuff. If anybody wants to run 3.11 or 95 on there tab I can post links and files but just so you know %95 of it is other people's work, I just got it going on the tab, 3.11 was a bit harder as it wouldnt boot on it's own in dos box so had to merge the 3.11 windows folder with my 3.1 folder and then it worked Installing 3.1 was crazy cos it takes you though the old windows install just like a pc and installs the windows folder on sd then you boot from that in dosbox using the win.com file. Anyway it's just a bit of fun and it's keeping me occupied so if anybody wants to play around I can tell you how. Don't know if I can post windows files here though, anybody know the score on that? I am pretty sure 3.1 and 95 are considderd abandonware as it would be impossible to purchase them from microsoft, I had bough them many years ago so technically I own the license to them so can download them legally

I had Win98 (I think) running on my Nexus One, it's a fun gimick.
Would be better on the GTab.

Yeah 95 and 98 will work fine just dosbox can't mount the sd as a drive when using the boot cmd so nothing can be installed unless I can unpack the .img file and add stuff, still haven't got to my computer yet to try 3.1 is fully functional as it runs inside dos box , the sd is mounted as the file system so you can navigate through windows to install old dos games and 3.1 apps

Difficult seeing the lack of a 3.5 floppy drive on the tab!
Anyway the floppies didn't contain windows, just the boot files and drivers to use the cd rom.

Have a nice day.

Lol. Nice image. But if you ain't got anything interesting to post then don't bother. So what if 3.1 and 95 are old and crappy. That's not the point. The point is Android lets us do so much stuff and it is always good to find out what our devices can do. *****ing and slagging somthing off is just stupid. The whole idea od these forums is so people can stretch the linits of of there phones and tablets. Yes running 3.1 isn't exactly stretching the 10.1's power but being able to install and run windows on android is pretty crazy. I only started this thread to tell people about it. It was just a little project for me cos wanted to play some of the ganes I did when I was young.
Not interested in starting an argument but nobody wants to see comments like that!

Android Bootable Live CD

http://code.google.com/p/live-android/
Just thought maybe people would like to have an android netbook of their own.
yes, it works, but just barely, they say that they are releasing a new version next month
keywords: Android, LiveCD, Live, CD, x86, Linux, asus, eee
wow amazing find. downloading now. thanks you soo much for the find.
Think I might jsut wait till next month but android on my laptop is just like running Linux so...
Frickin wicked cool! Live-MicroSD is how I already run linux, perhaps I can dual boot this off the same SD
Anyone try this? Call me stupid but I can't figure out how to turn 3 .rar files into one .iso image. Any help? I am usung ubuntu.
Okay so apparently you only need 1 of the rar files. I got it running on my asrpireone with ubuntu netbook remix in virtual box ose. It is glitchy as hell and can't do much, much cool as hell nontheless. Here are some screen shots.
Does this run like a ubuntu live cd? Just put disk in drive, reboot, and run? Will it erase any of my Windows partions? I just want to make sure before I try.

Like you said, put the disk in, reboot, and run
it's pretty cool, if useless 'till they get wifi etc working.
btw, has anyone figured out the power key? I can't seem to find it.
If your using a desktop, look on the tower,it should be that green light. But really,I don't think the power key is mapped,I pressed every button on my keyboard, and no power options.

Nor me. I found the menu key eventually (it's the "right click menu" key), but nothing for power. =(
I couldn't figure out the power button. I was running in virtual bow, so I just shut down vb. More important question, has anyone figured out how to root and apply roms? 8p
YAY I'm famous lol http://code.google.com/p/live-android/wiki/WhatUserSaid
This is great to play around with. I have a spare small laptop I use it on. Its tricky to navigate without the touch screen. I found myself touching my laptop screen lol. Is there any way I could get a mouse to work in android?
Can you run this off of an SD card or flashdrive?

i was so excited when I heard this because usually google doesnt announce anything until the release. then i did some research and realized it won't be out until 2nd half 2011. So sad. I understand why the early announcement. Hopefully they will create enough hype to atract the microsoft zombies.
Anyone get this working yet on a GMA Intel 945 gfx chip yet? (Aka netbooks) Got a S10e that wont boot into it yet.
I tried booting this up on a macbook and so far it only gets to the live android screen. It just seems stuck there.

Clockwork Mod Help using a Mac?

Is it possible to do so yet? As of right now it looks like Odin is the only route to getting it to work. Any Mac users had any luck? I'm rather nervous not having my Clockwork back ups
I'm curious also. I read there is a bmunlock that can flash from shell, but no confirmation or walk through yet. I hope this thread gets the ball rolling for us, or we're gonna have to get real smart real quick.

Being a mac user myself, ive been meaning to write a one click script for mac users. right now though, i have too many projects swimming in my head, and i also work a full time job and a part time job. just not enough time to get done what i want
Easiest way would be just borrow a friends PC or use bootcamp right now to use odin. sorry guys, i will get to it asap though

I just borrowed my g/f's Laptop lol. I now have clockwork as frustrating as that 20 mins was being back on a pc
unfortunatly ive convinced my friends to change macs. Pcs are getting harder to find.
Looking forward to this too!
any word on this yet? i'm dying to get a backup going with CWM, but im on a mac and i literally have no friends... with a PC that is
Yeah, I would appreciate this too, as it's really hard to find access to a PC around here.
I tried searching Google and some forums about ways to install without a PC, but only found ways to install on Macs with HTC phones.
still no word on this? i haven't been able to track down a PC, and i'm feeling really scared and alone without a backup...
seriously though, anyone do CWM on a mac yet?
I've been searching still nothing...
It's funny. Android is an open Linux platform and yet most of the tools used to hack it are Windows-only. Am I the only one who finds it strange how people are using Microsoft software to hack Linux devices? and yes I understand most people use Windows, but I would have thought that after buying an Android device, with Google's platform being open-source and designed with a cross-platform philosophy, that I would be just fine with hacking the device with my Mac or any Linux computer.
Anyway, I know the problem.. Linux, Mac, Java devs.. where are you? We need a cross-platform solution!
Everybody should have a Windows machine at their disposal. Macs have started to catch on but it's still not as supported as I'd like to see. That being said I use a virtual machine to run Windows if I'm not near my desktop PC. VirtualBox is free even if the operating system isn't, though I'm sure some of you can get creative...
Bootcamp + Copy of windows- that was my end solution. Sorry guys...

Is installing Ubuntu/Linux on my Vaio w/ Vista a good idea?

I want to do some Android development and I currently have access to a Vaio running Vista Home Premium and a MacBook Pro running Leopard. I was considering installing Linux or Ubuntu on my Vaio, is this a good idea? What are the perks to an open source OS (I can only imagine after seeing what Linux based Android OS is capable of)

I don't think there's any as far as Android development is concerned. ADB and Eclipse run on Windows just as fine as they do on Linux, and if you need any GNU tools there's always Cygwin.
I develop under Linux myself, but that's just because it's my main OS (after you get around all the problems and learn how to use it basic tasks become quicker by a fair amount). If I were using Windows, I doubt I would bother putting Linux on my machine just for Android development.
Either way, it's up to you to try and see whichever is more comfortable for you.
I like the spirit of Linux. Microsoft is a soul sucking evil, not to mention Vista drains ungodly resources just to idle. If I load Ubuntu will it wipe my hd like any other OS? I don't have an external at the moment, is it possible to make a small storage partition that won't get touched?

It all depends on how you partition your HDD. If you have enough free space you can just shrink your Vista partition and install Ubuntu alongside it in a separate partition thus leaving your Windows untouched. Hit Google with something like "installing Ubuntu after Vista" and you'll get many useful guides.
Just note that after installing Ubuntu you might need a lot of coffee, many hours, or days, and lots of head bashing against the table before you will get everything to work as you'd like After that you'll be free again... totally free, until you decide to upgrade to a newer release

now you're scaring me. i have my vaio open in front of me and all i can think is "remember how much stumbling through freeing the captivate made you a crazy person? just wait."
Now I'm getting tempted to wipe my old XP computer and stick Linux on it. Could be fun to learn.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
You can boot Ubuntu from CD-ROM or USB stick if you want to try it out. Of course it's a lot slower than a full installation but at least it won't touch your harddisc! Check out the Ubuntu site for instructions.
I have two laptops at home and in the meanwhile I'm running Ubuntu on both of them. The first one is dual booting with Windows 7 (in case I want to do some gaming) and on the second one I totally wiped out Windows!!!
I never did any Linux before but so far I didn't run into any problems at all. Ubuntu is working smooth directly after installation. No problem to connect to WLAN (just as easy as on Windows 7) and downloading apps, development tools, and whatever from Ubuntu software store is just as easy as on Android!
For Android app development you don't necessary need any Linux. But if you want to play with the NDK then you might want to know that there's no Google support for Windows, so Linux is recommended here. If you want to compile the Android OS itself then a Linux machine is more suitable as well.
On Windows there's still the possibilty to use some Cygwin emulation or whatever but I never tried it myself, instead I thought for myself: I want to do Linux or I don't want to do Linux?
If you are more comfortable with a Linux PC then you'll also get a better understanding on the way Android is working in case you are interested in the internals, file system, shell, etc.

I have faith in my ability to fix anything. I can't change the boot options on my vaio tho, I can't get to the right menu

I recommend ubuntu. Compared to earlier years, almost everything just works out of the box, very basic and easy. You can load up a live cd/usb, install along side your current os with a very small partition size [I use about 8g out of my 120g hdd] because ubuntu is smart enough to read ntfs file systems, so it will be able to read anything that is on the windows partition as well. It will automatically install grub, allowing you to pick between os's when you boot, and everything is swell. Though i would upgrade to windows 7 first, as vista = crap

FAQ:
Q: Did you make this?
A: No! It was made by a user known as Grazzt (he can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=4289767)
Q: Where are the download links?!
A: If you're talking about a qEMU .IPK, it can be found here: http://touchpad.grazzt.com/qemu/ but if you're talking about operating systems,
you must find them by your own means, I would be violating copyright and XDA's rules if I posted them here. Grazzt won't supply you with these, either, so don't bother him or me about .IMGs.
Q: How do I use this?!
A: If you have to ask this question, you shouldn't be using this, but if you would really like to know: Place your hdd.img in /media/internal/qemu and open qEMU, it should attempt to boot the OS within the .img
Q: Does this run smoothly?
A: For me it does, but on my TouchPad, I have a ton patches to lighten up WebOS, as well as UberKernel, set at 1.5GHz, with the performance governor . It will probably not run as smoothly on a stock TouchPad, but I suggest giving it a try.
Q: Where's my keyboard?!?!
A: A virtual keyboard has not been implemented (yet?).
Q: Does this overtake WebOS?
A: No, it runs in a card, as an application.
Q: WTF is wrong with the mouse?!?!
A: Nothing, the mouse is simply set to relative instead of absolute.
Q: Does sound work?
A: Yes, however, on certain OS's you may have to repeatedly increase and decrease the volume (with the TouchPad's volume rocker) to get it to properly intialize.
qEMU is what used to run win95/98, it is real, but such a hassle to run an outdated OS...not to mention the mouse calibration is wayy off, and none of the internal hardware works (no sound, wifi, opengl etc.)
also, the entire package has to be compiled, it isnt ready to use just by dl'ing it and providing a ripped OS...
its a neat little PoC, but totally not worth it considering ARM Win8 dev is dropping soonishly (hopefully )

speak for yourself.
I'm a tinkerer.
I like diy projects
I do not like being hand-fed.
IT is worth it for me.
Im the "author" (well,ok, compiler) of the projects, and yeah, qemu is sort of lame for the enduser. Just wanted to see if it works and it does. Sound does work, and if I looked hard enough could probably change the mouse settings to be absolute instead of relative. Sad part is because Ive shut down win98 too many times ungracefully, I have registry errors, and too lazy to make a clean hdd image. lol
Cant really distribute it along with hdd imags of windows, Im sure you know why. I believe the freedos images from qemu.org work fine.
Dosemu has also seriously ticked me off, some games see mouse clicks, others dont, its frustrating. If you have a game that sees mouse clicks, I think it runs quite well.
Gemrb runs well, dont know what else can be said about it. Go for the eyes BOO!

WELCOME GRAZZT!
also, i wasnt bashing the project, its indeed clever, and ive see similar projects done befofe, but considering how low end some of the touchpad users here are (hopefully that doesnt last long!) its not novel for regular users.
having said that, it looks like the potential for winxp IS there, but we would have to resort to a minimalized "usb-stick" version with the media touch drivers slipstreamed (which really isnt a bad thing )
and scrizz, im the exact same as you , i dont buy, i diy! that post was more of an initial overview for ppl who just scrub through these posts and ask for links to complete projects and eta's but since the dev is here, im sure the project can advance by leaps and bounds with our help and testing
I cleaned up the original post a little.

[Q] Want to learn

Greetings all, hopefully this is the right place to post this question.
First a little background on me, been a hacker for Windows since win 95. I can make windows do anything I want. I hold multiple cert’s and have tweaked /changed about everything on the windows interface except Win 8, it sux. Anyway, I want to learn android like that, like in windows Stem 32 folder is the heart and soul of a windows build. I want to know file structure, boot path, what files you have to have and why. Then I want to get into tweaking and developing . There is a butt ton of books and whatnot but I thought I’d ask the people that know. ANY direction to start would be great.
And thanks to all the Devs and Tweakers that make all this possible, I’d like to contribute someday!

It sounds like I almost mirror your skillset, maybe we could work together? Or find a dev to give us exercises to work on?
Current: A+, Net+, MTA Server Admin, Panasonic Security Solutions Certified (PSEC), and on windows since 3.1 w/usb support.
In Progress: CCNA, MCSA, ITIL Foundation
I have 2 devs that I want to ask one is west coast and the other is less than 2 hours from me.. Let me know what/who you find.
CHEERS!
