SGS2 ICS porting to SGS...possible? - Galaxy S I9000 General

There is samsung's ics for galaxy s 2, so is it possible to port it to sgs?
http://www.sammobile.com/2011/12/14/exclsuive-android-4-0-1-by-samsung-for-sgs2-custom/

There are only few features what can be ported to i9000 cause of reallly diffrent pcb used in sgsII.. more realiable is using sources from nexus S when they will be avaible... also if samsung is working on ics for sgsII they can use their resources to made rom for i9000 preaty fast.. and here is one more thing samsung not forgot about us cause of relasing few new roms in past month even yesterday xD

Ok, thanks for your answer. Let's hope that nexus s ics sources comes out soon.

We have ufficial ics from samsung

there are already very good ports by team hack sung, why bother with those other ones?
Nexus S also as not received the official ICS yet, their ICS ports are weaker than the i9000 ICS ports

quite offtopic answer but team hack sung could make their build more modern.. that means go step further and dont using old kernel resources 2.6.35/7 and go direct to kernels 3.0.8... (they need to port drivers to new api anyway) only nikademus pawtip onecosmic AFAIK(I'm new here in i9000) trying to do sth with it... but i know that kerels 3.0.x works with less laginnes after some time,, its may be cause of many junks and workarounds in obsolete 2.x.x kernels.... thats my point

Yeah as said the ICS builds posted in the Android Development forum would be much better than bloated touchwiz ICS. If you have problems with bugs it's best to be patient until they are fixed.

Using Gingerbread as a base presumably?
Given the amount of "non-standard" hardware in the SGS2, you'll need support libs from either an existing non-AOSP OEM firmware, or from CM7 won't you?
great.. i hope u will port in a bunch of days

Lol no he can't. There isn't a FULL system dump of the Galaxy Nexus yet. There is only the dump from the SDK. He will probably theme it like Ice Cream Sandwich. Anyways good luck to the dev
source is the power, says cyanogen. wont this be useless when the sources are released? wont this feel like wasting cuz when sources is released, other devs will easily make those ICS roms, instead of porting it.
well anyway good luck to the dev!

That's not the point. Of course, a dump would be a lot better. But being the first to port and get a working SDK rom... Now that's where the fun is
It is possible, we have the full SDK ROM.

I for one don't see this working as every device seems to be getting the same LibC error at the moment (except for some reason the G2).
The best hope seems to be getting a HC rom to work then using the boot.img from that to boot the ICS sdk port. (this is what we believe happened with the G2 to get it to boot)
I would be satisfied with the new gmail application including widget
Cheers!
Looking to try .Hope you have a great ICS.

good idea with this thread
haha yeah maybe your right that its to soon, but i read that drew (yes THAT drew) is getting out his update soon and miui also said that theyd have ics soon so i figuered better to soon than to late! ;D

yeah, good idea mate..
hoping that this thread will not go under in discussions who has stolen the rom from who and so on.. simply updates - no discussion from who and why and how.
actually I run the ics port b12, quite good, only the market update crash-issue is ugly .. let's hope and wait for the devs to get ICS sooner mostly stable
i was using b12 as well, but then i swiched back to gb miui because of the market, whatsapp, sms (maximaum one page) and all the fcs...
but i fell madly in love with ics and i keep looking for roms for the nexus s all the time! ;D
I think drew should just upload now... he can get out the stable version later!
I have to satisfy my lust for ics! ;D

Way to go OP. I was following other threads here and, like many, I find it hard to find an update on what's happening without searching the internet up and down. Those other threads became laughable. Why would anyone send you hate mail for hopefully clarifying things with a consolidated thread. Good to see this.

Where, oh where, is our nexus s ics update? Any release date rumour?
Anyway, good thinking. Feels good to have a topic to go to.
koush's ROM seems doing fine except for camera and wifi according to him.
i hope he shares it soon eventhough it's not fully functional.

There will not be a stable ROM until the source is released. Not the source for the Galaxy Nexus but the actual source. That will happen when the OTA is released for your NS most likely. CYANOGEN will wait for real source as will the MIUI team.
You will see some adapted and modded ROMs based on the Galaxy Nexus code. Most likely they will have modified GB kernels I believe.
I would not be surprised to see OTAs for NS right after the Galaxy Nexus hits stores in the US, definitely b4 Christmas.

Say what you want about drew but at least he had no problem releasing half busted roms. Now that people are making source roms we are begging for them to at least give us a half busted rom while we wait but no one will ugh! I don't care if just the camera and wifi don't work! That's leaps and bounds above what were used to!

So you mean that google only released the source for the Galaxy nexus and not the actual source code for ICS 4.0? have they ever done that before?

Q for devs, why no ICS rom?

Hi all, I'm new here, bought a GT7.7 few days ago. As i was using ICS on my GT8.9 before (I'm a member of the Galaxian-soup team who made a AOSP ICS rom for GT8.9), the HC feels very slow to me. So my question is why there is no ICS rom for GT7.7? The Galaxy Note has the same SoC as GT7.7, correct? Note has a official Samsung ICS leak, correct? So we should be able to get all needed libs from that rom to make everything work. Am i missing something? Is there some specific problem with GT7.7 that I'm not aware of or are there just no devs here who have tried?
I would try it alone, but unfortunately getting it to run needs some kernel mods and i don't have any experience with kernels. I know what needs to be done, so if there are devs here who have time and are interested, let's work together and make it happen.
Probably because the 7.7 doesn't really have a whole lot of community dev support yet, especially compared to the likes of the Note and the 8.9, both of which have been out for longer.
I would love to see you make one for us. ^^
If i would know how to cook a ICS ROM i already did it ^^
But someday that will happen
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
i think it is because da 7.7 just arrive US, and most of custom rom developers are from US, so we dont have much custom rom yet
I have to say I'm not missing ICS on this device - compared to another cheapo Chinese device (Aurora) I'm also using (where ICS is just SLOWWW!), the 7.7 is just right as it is! If ICS slows down the 7.7 then I'm sticking with HC.

I'm missing it. I've been using AOSP ICS on my GT8.9 for two months now and it is a lot faster then HC, especially the browser. The stock browser in GT7.7 is unusable for me.
I will try to build a AOSP ICS rom and see how far i get. Are there any kernel devs here?
I'd be interested in trying to help, but I've never actually done android kernel development. I have set up a build environment to compile the kernel but only to **** around for myself; I've never actually released anything on xda.
I am wondering though, is it actually possible to modify the HC kernel to run a ported ICS ROM? Over in GS2-land I'm pretty sure all the ICS ROMs are running modified, leaked kernels. Even CM9 is using mostly a leaked kernel with repacked initramfs I'm pretty sure.

Yes, it is possible. For GT8.9 we are using android 3.1 kernel from Samsung (for some reason Samsung has not released android 3.2 kernel source code for GT8.9). Of course it needs to be modified to make hw acceleration, touchscreen etc work.

Sounds like you need a better kernel dev than me, then. But as others have said, development over here is pretty limited--you could try posting in the dev section, but ezynow is the guy who has posted anything on the kernel side of things. Maybe things will pick up a bit with the VZW release, but to be honest, this is a pretty niche device--I love it and I'm sure most of the people reading this do too, but at the price point it's just never going to be that popular. Here's to hoping.
you need all the updated binary libraries for ICS in addition to the new kernel before installing ICS will be possible
Availability around the world ( aside from Asia ) might be quite low or next to non-existent, its a great device but I've got a feeling it wont get too much of a developer support as samsung just keeps on crunching out new tablets.
OK, i'm confused now. I've been gathering information about the gt7.7 and i have found a lot of conflicting information. Do we have a confirmed partition table information? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21695494&postcount=5 < this looks right to me, can anyone confirm this?
The strange thing is that even the root.zip released here seems to mount the wrong partition, it mounts /dev/block/mmcblk0p4 as system?! To me it looks like the system is mmcblk0p9 or am i wrong?
Are P6800 and P6810 partition tables the same?
No they are not.

The partition tables are different and details have been posted elsewhere.
davp has previously posted about the possible error in root.zip as you also have identified. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22650451 There does not appear to be any response by JadeEyedWolf or any others. Whilst it might not be a likely critical problem, it may, at the least, be poor coding.

Vote for SGS to get MIUI V4

Hi all!
As you may know, or don't know, MIUI China has launched a poll on Facebook which device we want to have MIUI V4 on next. Although the requirements say that they will only port it when ICS is available from manufacturer, I personally think we might make a chance because we already have CM9 running on our device. They could take it as a base to port MIUI V4 officially to our SGS.

after using AOKP roms i think i will never using miui :
1-AOKP have more customization
2-until now not stable at all even the official build(on my s2) AOKP more stable
3- themes is coming now to cm9 and aokp so no need to miui
4-aokp had official support to sgs miui not
5-battery is better on Aokp roms or cm9
6-do u want more
I voted because hey, the more options the better right, but apparently they have said no a few times and i personally prefer a more AOKP/AOSP rom to MIUI. That said, im not writing miui off, it looks pretty good
miui has out to sgs ;> Samsung Galaxy S
Android: 4.0.4 / MIUI: 2.5.11
I agree to the part that miui is the smoothest of 'em all. Some special system in their framework. Nova launcher is a treat to use on miui.
SGS is voted on second place. This shows how many ppl are still using our phone.

When it will be out and maybe everything will be working since it's a minor update and works with the fixes and modules we have in CM9
the source isnt even out for another two weeks! and even ics isnt fully working (and it will never be). jesus, people, first of all, devs are people too, they have the right to LIVE besides porting roms to devices, second of all, why so impatient? what do you want in jb that ics cant give you? accept that the defy is an outdated phone (especially with the old kernels and drivers). if you want a fully functional ics or jb, go buy the galaxy nexus or the nexus 7 (its only 200$). so, again: the defy will never have a fully working port of either ics or jb.
