US Carries and compatible plans for Galaxy note - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

Hi Guys, this is my first post.
I am relocating to N.Y. from Europe for work and i am bringing my Galaxy Note with me of course.
I was not aware of the situation in U.S. with phone carriers and I am only beginning to grasp the things you have to suffer.
Could you please recommend me a plan. I have already contacted sprint and they refused to accept my cell phone. I am currently thinking of getting boost mobile unlimited but i can't find out if my phone is fully compatible with their service.
I have no credit history in U.S.. I would like at least 200' 100sms and a few GBs of data. Some minutes for calling landlines in Europe would also be great.
I would realy appreciate your help, feeling kind of lost in the open sea.
Thanks in advance (if the list is complete it could be a nice sticky)

Your Note will only give you 3G on AT&T or AT&T MVNOs. You will only get Edge at best on TMo, and your phone won't work at all on Verizon or Sprint!

Dave

Get the 450 min package
http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/plans/data-plans.jsp
Get the 2gb package. And unlimited messaging.
The phone works great on AT&T with some pretty good speeds.

As foxmeister said ur only option to use full data is with ATT.
The best thing here is to get a prepaid 50 $ unlimited plan. It comes with unlimited everything. Including data.
However if u have a smart phone then u need another data plan. However ATT is never going to know u have a smartphone since the imei of european phones is not their list.
Many people here are using non smartphone data plan with note with no issues.
However if u want a contract, then again get an iphone 4gs with att and sell the phone and use ur phone with that plan.
Since u dont have a credit history here, ATT will ask u to put in a 1000$ deposit, which they will refund u at the end of the 1st year.

I thought I saw in another thread some people complaining about having been found out. Was that about U.S. IMEIs or European ones?
When I go to the AT&T shop must I carry my phone with me to show it before they give me the unlimited plan?

Just don't expect much with AT&T in NY, they kinda suck. Lots of dead zones and dropped calls. I have an unlimited data plan with them but on Friday they told me that since I'm in the top 5% of data users they're going to slow down my connection.

I am sure they will catch you if u use too much data.. may be like over 10gb every month.
U dont have to carry the phone with u.
Good thing about prepaid is that u can always stop using it without loosing much money.
I would consider prepaid as a temporary measure before u understand the coverage and stuff like that..
I think walmart has a plan .. again 50$ unlimited with no carrier specifcation.
This was discussed somewhere in Gnote forum too..

That's standard HSPA data speeds. You'll see the DL speed go up to 11mb some nights depending on your area.
You don't have to change anything

I average about 3GB's a month and my high was 6.4GB in Oct.

I am on wifi most of the time and I don't use a ton of talk minutes, so I am using an AT&T GoPhone smartphone plan, $25.00/month for 500MB of data, $0.10 per talk minute.

I'm in NYC. Live downtown work in midtown. I have dropped calls all the time and need to reboot my iphone a couple of times a day. I also spend a lot of time upstate (Catskills) and have little to no service up there with AT&T. And they've told me they have no plans to add cell towers.

Hey guys thanks for all the tips. I have been using AT&T gophone unlimited for 10 days. I don't do heavy internet usage but i can say that the data network is speedy and stable in Manhattan. I am not so satisfied with voice call quality and I have some dropped calls or phone takes for ages to connect.
Overall thanks for the help. AT&T worked out of the box and I almost make full use of the device. A strange difference from Europe is that in US data actually works better than voice.

T-Mobile 500mb Data Cap...

I feel real sorry for our brothers and sisters over in the UK who will be getting their data capped at 500mb. See the article here:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2011/jan/12/t-mobile-data-cap-smartphone
Can you imagine the negative slap-back to T-Moble if they did something like that here in the Ol' USA? I mean, I couldn't wade though all the negative energy it is now when T-Moble limited the 'unlimited' data plan to 5gb. Imagine it being only 500mb.. Geez!
I don't listen to any streaming music, nor do I watch any streaming videos, movies, or shows except for a little YouTube now and then. I don't do any major downloads except for a ROM now and then. I still hover around 890mds to 1200mbs per month. 500mbs would kill me!
How about you guys?

It sucks for them, but all the carriers seem to be doing this. And Engadget got the official word that the cap is only for new contracts, so existing users won't be capped.
i would burn through 500mb in the first week
I could use that in like 2 days. Already doing 8gb a month and that's just using Pandora radio and streaming video, web and YouTube. I would cancel my service if they did that here.

Thats some serious data usage. If there was a 5th mobil carrier that offered a true unlimited data plan here is the USA, I wonder how many of us would pay the penalty of contact disconnect and switch over?
I wish there WAS a US based mobile carrier that offeres a true unlimited data plan!

Yep, but they'll get them when they renew!
Here in Texas, Time Warner is offerening a wireless plan for laptop and mobile users that is 250mbs a month.
Give me a break!
After you use up 250mbs, then they charge you (i believe - going off memory) .10 cents for every 1mb after.. WTF!
Isn't wimax something like clearwire?

They will be capped when they renew their contracts.
When you renew you contract they will just give you a different contract to agree too, and the new data plan will be part of it.
They aren't "grandfathering" anyone in. They just aren't breeching their CURRENT contracts.

Someone watches alot of porn
I read the article about the 500MB data cap today and was totally freaking out, because I generally use about 2GB worth of data every month. I called T-Mobile and the rep said they had a 5 GB cap and after that your bandwidth will be throttled (which is what I thought the plan was). The T-Mobile rep told me that 500MB is insane and they would never put their cap that low, as you would eat it up in a few days.
Wow even T-Mobile USA agrees 500MB a month is not enough for a smartphone. How is T-Mobile USA affiliated with T-Mobile UK?
I told the rep that if they ever did something like that I would no longer be a T-Mobile customer... She acknowledged and told me T-Mobile would never do anything like that.
After my call with T-Mobile I decided I'd hop on XDA to see if anyone else saw the article about the 500MB cap, and found this thread. Now I wish I would have recorded the call in case T-Mobile ever does reduce their cap like this.
Hoping to get the new dual core Optimus when it arrives in April... If they do this to T-Mobile USA customers after I renew I am going to have a cow...

To clarify for you guys about WiMax.
Wimax is a technology much like LTE. Wimax is an extension to WiFi. Clearwire uses Wimax as their technology of choice to provide internet access/Data to their customers. Anyone who wants to can buy a Tower and mount a Wimax antenna on it and use it, just like we use wireless as Wimax has access to a none license frequencies as well as frequencies you need to license to use.
Looks like I won't be picking up anymore prepaid t mobile sim cards when I go to london.

Hmm yeah I suppose if you need a TON of data, you are better off elsewhere...but for people who want to stick with a GSM carrier, there's nothing better right now!
I'm not sure I could ever give up switching phones as I please.
Be ware....It's not prepaid. If you run out of minutes they charge you like 90 dollars. Read the fine print. I had 30 dollars worth of data left I didn't even use switched to tmobile thinking prepaid is prepaid and they sent me a bill for 90 cancelation fee. Didn't even use my 30 worth of paid for data
No, it's NOT just TONS of Data. It's also minutes. 100 minutes? Yeah, I don't think so. This plan isn't that great. If it meets your needs fine, but don't go talking down to others JUST BECAUSE THEY DON'T AGREE WITH YOU.

Whoa, not sure where all the hate is coming from. I suppose I misunderstood you and certainly was not talking down to you. So I apologize.
Anyway, my plan is to use Google Voice or sipdroid since the minutes are capped to only 100. I just wanted to make people aware of the opportunity.

I can tell you that I am going to jump on this Sunday.
It is perfect for the 3G GSM cellular modem in my laptop.
I am sick of not having internet access in some places and as I won't ever be using voice or giving out that number it is just perfect and a deal!
Plus no f---ing contract.
Can someone confirm this plans now works fine and it is not a fiasco it was right after the release? I have HD2 Tmobile US and wonder if it will work on my phone?
I barely use my phone for talking and never over 100mins - data is pretty much what I use for the most of the time and this plan seems like a winner...
What else should we know about this plan?

Check HoFo. I haven't found much useful information here on XDA.
Of note, I have found no problems with the plan thus far (have only used it for 1 month)
hey everyone. so apparently mobile to mobile doesnt apply to monthly 4g plans. i never read this anywhere and i tried to do as much research as i could before i tired to get on this plan. but now, after 1 day of ussage, im out of minutes.
if you guys have any specific questions, post them, and ill try to answer them
Fact: I found that I had to buy a $30 t-mo phone at walmart to get this plan, and after activation, I moved the sim to a nicer device (bought a nearly unused lg g2x for cheap). I don't talk on the phone, google voice when I do (voice messages conveniently converted to text) and never give out my t-mo phone #.
History: I have been using boost for a couple years and was happy with their service/plan, but even the rather nice samy prevail (thank you ShabbyPenguin!!) was feeling a bit limited (despite root and link2sd). Was about to try Hoarks CM7 on it. I did not feel like trying to get a regular sprint phone to work on boost either.
Review: Signal strength not as good at home, but I use wifi here anyways. I get about 2Mb data over cell here tho, so not too bad. Phone is a kickass upgrade (CWM, CM7 nightly thanks to XDA forums tutorials!) and I like that I can use my sim in many other devices!
Expect to pay $30 for a phone and $30 for plan. Web activation of phone worked. Be sure to use THE AGENT CODE on the phone box! I bought the $30 card but using the scratch and dust number did not validate online , I called tmobile number and entered it there and it validated (whew!).
hope that sheds some light...

Is the agent code unique? If not, can you share it?
I just ordered the SIM on T-Mobile's website (ended up getting it as an addition to my postpaid plan for my NS which was sitting unused). I followed the activation steps in the booklet that came with the SIM. No agent code needed and I paid $5.34 for the SIM.
NOTE: This only works if you already have a compatible phone with AWS bands. I don't know about activating a newly bought phone on this plan.
Wasn't me!! I didn't do it!
I'm moving back to DC this summer (from Beijing) and I want to get on this plan. But I lost my phone the other day and need something for the next 3 months.
Q: Is there any Android/ICS international phone I can buy that can be hacked to work with Tmobile HSPA+? I'd say the HTC One S would be perfect for me, but I don't think you can get the one with TMobile 1700 CDMA band.

Generally, no. Some hacking has been done on AT&T-branded phones (e.g. Galaxy Note) to get them to work with T-Mobile's 3G. However, most phones are incapable of this. Saying 1700 band is a bit misleading - as there are a couple 1700MHz bands that are not AWS (i.e. T-Mobile USA).
So far, all of the Nexus phones (GSM versions, excluding "a" variants which support AT&T's 3G) work with the AWS band. A few others like the Sensation and Evo 3D come to mind.
Your options will be limited because the AWS band is fairly unpopular. Most manufacturers don't bother with it as it's used only on the less-popular networks of the U.S. and Canada - nowhere else.

AT&T GoPhone data speeds

I know that a few of you are also using your Notes as an AT&T GoPhone, and I'm curious about the speeds you're getting. I'm in the Sacramento area, and I only get about 0.8 to 2.0 mbps (download).
Is this around what you guys are getting?

I am on the straighttalk 45 per month "unlimited" and theirs is advertised unlimited but in reality they shut you off if you go over around 2 GB per month; also some undefined daily limit. Other than that GREAT to be off AT&T. Wait - I AM on AT&T network, just not paying the same as I used to.

So far I haven't seen any throttling. That said, my data usage has been limited to the phone and a couple of tethering sessions. I don't use it as a replacement for home internet and use WiFi whenever possible so hopefully I'll stay off their radar.
A postpaid AT&T account to accomplish the same thing w/ 2GB of data (enough for me) is a good bit more expensive. As it is, I'm paying just a little more than I did on Sprint but it's easier to justify at this price than at the postpaid price and I'm not left paying for a subsidy that I didn't use.

I know that a few of you are also using your Notes as an AT&T GoPhone, and I'm curious about the speeds you're getting. I'm in the Sacramento area, and I only get about 0.8 to 2.0 mbps (download).
Is this around what you guys are getting?
Take care, guys.

I'm in the Sacramento area too. Currently running on T-mobile, but I want to switch to GoPhone. I'm getting about 800kb/s on edge.
Did you give att your IMEI number, or a fake one? How do you like the GoPhone service with the Note?

Didn't give them an IMEI at all. In fact, they never asked for one. Heck, I didn't even have the phone with me at the time...
Data speeds are mediocre, but I'm not sure if that's because of my Note or because of AT&T's spotty coverage. (I'm getting in the range of 0.8 - 2.5 Mbps) I don't mind though, since I primarily use wi-fi. I just needed some coverage for when I'm on the go, and it does the trick.

i got a sim only from att store , paid my $50 last week. Yesterday i finally got a note and its the first tim using the sim. I can not get data to work at all. searched high and low used every apn setting i could find the closest i got was using:
wap.cingular
proxy: wireless.cingular.com
but it brings me to a page shown in attached photo."to use data services you must have a data package"
if i use any othe apn settings i get the H+ but nothing loads at all as far as web pages or anything that uses data gets a network error. I guess they have this imei in their database??
Should i backup my EFS file and delete it off the phone? Goto the store get a gophone get mobile web working again, swap sims?
very frustrating. and realistically i want to see if at&t has improved at all in NYC before paying verizon etf's and coming back (i prefer gsm).
Thanks!

Are there any NON throttled 4g data plans out there?

Well I got my brand-new Samsung galaxy S3 (off contract) and I’ve been playing around the last couple of weeks streaming video and whatnot and to my surprise I get the dreaded text message from AT&T stating that I just got throttled. This is the first-time and I am PISSED!! I am SURE this has been covered before but it’s the first time for me. I had no idea exactly how much they throttled you by until now. I mean you can’t do anything once they tightened the noose. I am grandfathered in with an unlimited LTE plan also which really makes it that much more irritating. Well I guess I need to download that app that finds free hotspots. I am in the San Antonio Texas area and we have good mobile data coverage down here so I have to wonder if there are any providers offering a truly unlimited non-throttled or less throttled 4g (of some kind) data plan. I know that Sprint is just getting their LTE service fired up and they are offering an unlimited plan in my area and technically I am not under contract right now which I made abundantly clear to the AT&T employee that I was speaking with (ranting to) like she cared. Does Sprint pull the same crap that AT&T does? Do I have any options? Thanks in advance.
Sprint just deployed their LTE recently and I've seen data speeds around 30+ MB/s reported by users in Texas

When I'm throttled on att ... my data speed goes from LTE to regular 3G , which is more then enough to stream video and music. How slow are you getting?

I went from almost 50mbs down to .5mbs down and up! Its enough to do little stuff but that's not the point. Its just unacceptable to be THAT limited on an UN-limited plan. Ive been with them 10 years since they were SWB and Cingular Wireless and Ive never come close to 5 gigs until now. How do we stream video and other data intensive stuff on 5 lousy gigs a month? Sprint offers Unlimited LTE in my area NON throttled according to Sprint rep. I will go to Sprint store tomorrow and see how fast it is. I am not under AT&T contract so I can shop around. The plan im on is almost as much as the unlimited Sprint plan so no big price difference. Is there a catch to Sprints data service? Do they start charging extra or or limit download size or cut you off if you tethering or anything? Is Sprint a good alternative to AT&T? Sprint seems the logical choice if thier speed is equal or near AT&Ts. Is AT&Ts call quality better or Sprint? Inst Sprint CDMA? Info greatly appreciated. Thanks.

To answer you question there are no gimmicks with Sprint when it comes to unlimited data. There plans really are unlimited and I live in Atlanta where my 4gLTE just activated and I am very pleased with the speeds. I'm loving Sprint right now.

Since the 5th, I've switched to Sprint. Coverage blows in stl, but blown past my 2gb cap I had with att and living that so far. Some coverage and I will be set!

If I had lte on sprint I'd be all over it. But 3g by me is horrible and no service whatsoever at my house really kills it. So I recently switched to att where my coverage is awesome and my 3g is easily 8x faster on average. If lte on sprint ever comes to my area I will certainly reconsider my choice. Until then ill live with my 5gb att cap.

The only reason Sprint has been able to offer truely unlimited plans is because the speeds were just too slow to generate any meaningful volume. With LTE now, they will be in the same position (likely worse equipped) once volume increases across the network. Enjoy it while it lasts. I certainly wouldn't be jumping ship having unlimited (5g) with ATT in hand to have fully unlimited data for a year or so.
Sprint doesn't cut you off or anything when it comes to data usage (unless you're roaming.) Go to 500 gb a month if you'd like.

I don't know why people are so up in arms about this stuff. Most carriers are going to tiered data.... it's the way it is and nothing's changing that. It's already been in the rumor mill based on some things done/said by sprint that they too, will be going to throttled/tiered methods to controlling data. I don't know about you guys, but I know that ever since tethering became very popular, TONS of people have been trying to use their mobile data connections as primary internet sources. While it's all fine and dandy that you feel that you should use your data how you want, the networks (and when I say networks, i mean ALL of them) are not yet ready to support everybody's daily habits and still be strong enough to support the current flow of telephone calls or data calls.
When that day comes, by all means, have the carriers put out unlimited data plans and have your telephone be your primary internet connection, but until that day when the networks are strong enough to support it, I still want to be able to make phone calls if need be, especially in an emergency.
By having service, it doesn't give anybody the right to unlimited data, or if they do have it, to use it however they wish. There are still terms and conditions with each company. I know it's not something that everybody likes, but it's the way life is. I am personally pretty glad that the carriers are approaching it this way, because in my area, I see first hand how tethering on smart phones can easily cripple networks at this current time.
I'll give you all an example. I work in a town of 45,000 people, with a "metropolitan" style town surrounding with a grand total of like 80,000 people. That's not a whole lot, which means there's not a ****load of towers here to support our mobile data/calling habits. The thing is, we're in Wisconsin, and there's a lot of places in Wisconsin that you can now get 3G service but can't even get Satellite internet service more than 700kbps. 3G service in those areas average 1-2 megs of service. HSPA/HSPA+ service in some of those areas range from 3-9megs of service. With a cost of $30-80 for sat. service, it's obvious what people would rather use for their internet. If even a 3rd of those 80,000 people started using their phones as primary internet connections, our network would quickly become stressed.
It's becoming more and more obvious to me every day too, that people are wanting to use their phone as a primary internet connection because they can't get land line service or want to save money on a more frequent basis. At least once or twice a day I get a customer coming in and asking us about our mobile internet service because they want to get rid of their land lines to save money, consolidate bills, or can't get land lines at home.
With the rate of how many people are now getting their hands on phones that are capable of tethering, that could very quickly change the work load of the towers on ANY network, be it sprint, at&t, tmo, verizon etc etc.... and it's not going to be for the better.... for now.
I guess the moral of the story is, as a person who still utilizes land line services as his primary source of internet (especially for streaming content/downloading content), I would love to have the cell phone towers I utilize still be able to support my telephone calls, instead of straining to support everybody's netflix addictions. Until the networks are built to support that kind of stuff, I can't say I disapprove of the way things are going on the carriers. Nobody's entitled to anything when it comes to service, and that being said, is what gives freedom of choice when it comes to your carrier choice. Just keep in mind that Sprint is looking more and more likely to follow suit with the tiered/throttled plans... seeing as they've already done it (according to articles, don't know if it's actually implemented) on their hotspot devices. If it's true, and has happened, It's not long till they do it to their smartphones, since every single one is ALSO a hotspot device.
*rant over*
P.S. This post is not meant to directly flame, offend, or belittle anyone for their habits. Everybody is different and has their own opinions, so keep in mind that this is MY opinion and the way I feel. Please keep your responses to it civil, because if they turn childish and mean hearted, i'll make sure the mods know and maybe close it because there's no need for that.

$5 for 50mb is robbery.. i paid an extra $30 for 10gb on tmobile.
That message must be worded wrong. AT&T just enabled LTE on GoPhone and they are now trying to get smartphone customers on prepaid. They still have the $5, $15, and $25 plans. They definitely are not dropping all data plans but the 50mb plan. If they did that, then that would kill off smartphones on GoPhone.
Well I truly hope it's worded wrong..

I got the text today too, mine also said any auto renewals of data packages will be canceled. I only have the 200 MB plan and have only used 16 MB in 3 weeks so it looks like I still may be able to get by with only 50 MB. I'm on wifi 99% of the time now and use mobile data now strictly for emergencies only. I think AT&T is trying to push everyone into their new service, there is a thread here about it somewhere, its supposed to be a direct competitor to Net10 and StraightTalk. I didn't really like the looks of it.
I got it, I read something on CNET about how they are introducing LTE on gophone, and sometime in mid june theres supposed to be new data packages available. So I'm hoping that the new data plans are just replacing the ones that are disappearing, and having only one choice is only temporary. If not, I'm a bit screwed...

Just read the article and it says data will be LTE/HSPA+, we currently have 3G/HSPA+, so I would expect to see an increase in the price of the data plans. Their standard data plans run $20(300 MB), $30(3 GB) and $50(5 GB). I could live with that but I would assume we would need new sims to access the data and as we don't have 4G/LTE phones are we even going to be able to activate the Nexus 4 on the network? The LTE network where I live isn't band 4 so that part is out of the question but would it then default to HSPA+?

I think the plan should still support hspa+. It's like when I was on Verizon, the 4g coverage wasn't near as good as the 3g, so when I was out of 4g areas I still got 3g. Plus I could still force 3g even in a 4g area.

I found the thread about getting a 4G data plan from AT&T for the Nexus 4. I knew I read somewhere that you had to jump through a lot of hoops to get a 4G plan (not HSPA+) from AT&T for the Nexus 4. AT&T in most cases won't activate the Nexus 4 on their network as a 4G device, you have to use another 4G phones IMEI that you basically steal and use that IMEI to activate the device on AT&T. The guys at my AT&T store are pretty cool so I might be able to talk them into hooking me up with a 4G plan.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2021401&highlight=at&t
It seems if you are on the $25 plan, they will only offer 50mb from now on and the only other option will be the $65 plan that includes unlimited talk/text + 1GB of data. For now these will be the only options. You have to think AT&T is going to add other options but maybe not knowing AT&T.
I have nearly $50 in my prepaid AT&T account, and I'll lose it if I cancel, but so be it. I already got burned once when I paid $25 for 1 GB of data to use for a week and it expired before my next trip even though I used less than half.
T-Mobile gets my business from now on when I cross the border. $3/day for unlimited talk/text + up to 200 MB on high speed. It's a no brainer. Afaik, TMo has good coverage over the places I visit the most by now (Boston, Buffalo, Bellingham, Bay Area).

Tried both and they suck, as has pretty much everyone in this thread but you it appears. Yeah you can get a $30 plan from T-Mobile but if you can't get a signal anywhere but on the Interstate what good is it? And ST? What a joke, you get throttled in a heart beat, customer service is non-existent and the GoPhone plans are actually about the same price so their is no deal there.

No, but when you get throttled for doing nothing, data speeds suck and are sometimes completely unusable, and have nonexistent customer service, the price difference doesn't mean anything. Plus gophone is going to give you the full att postpaid data service and speeds, meaning that you won't have a bandwidth cap. MVNO's buy data from att, I seriously doubt they are giving you the full speed that att "reserves" for their post paid customers.

You said the plans looked good. I wasn't commenting on service. The plans are not comparable to pretty much any prepaid service.
I just cancelled my t-mobile account today. I have been with them since January this year.
No signal anywhere, and I'm done with them. Data speeds are fantastic, if you can get a signal. My loss of signal is 60% with them.
I'm gong to att go phone.
Can someone tell me what I need to do to get a micro sim card to get the go phone service started???
