Location services don't work? - Optimus 7 General

I remember why I sold my original Optimus 7 now, I bought a new one yesterday as it was on offer, but for the life of me I can't get location services to work, my iPhone instantly find me, this phone just sits searching and gives and error it can't find me. It seems to be using GPS which when in doors isn't going to find me, it doesn't seem to use WiFi or Cell Towers. Outside its hit and miss if it finds me. I'd say it was a dodgy phone if the original phone I had didn't have the same problems.
Anyone any ideas? Its not that the location is off a bit, it just simply can't find me via wifi or cell

Vodafone's Optimus 7 firmware is broken - I worked out this works:
In MFG, navigate to Engineer Menu / Device Test / Sensor Test / GPS Test / GPS Setting
In User Setting, use following values:
Operation Mode: MS-Based
Accuracy: 100
Aiding Data: Hot Start
Auto Answer: Disable
Interval: 1
Number of Fixes: 9999999
Intermediate Data: On
In System Setting:

Posnode: 255
2G: Loc Estimate
3G: Loc Estimate
Use Security: Use Security
MO Method: User Plane
PLEASE sign up on the Vodafone e-forum to add your voice to the request to get this fixed on this thread:

Thanks for this, Going to flash a generic European ROM and see what happens

Not working for me.
LG E900 Vodafone

I flashed the unbranded European ROM and they still don't work. I am thinking it a bug with all E900 phones.

Tried Nokia maps and it found me instantly in the house, The Weather Channel also found me instantly, so I think it all comes down to the app.

Problem with GPS (A-GPS, QuickGPS)

The phone seems to actually have A-GPS as well as the QuickGPS app - but don't turn it on! I was using Touch-IT AdvancedConfig when I saw the option, so I thought I'd give it a try ... turned A-GPS to active...
The GPS logs, then loses connection in a 10 second cycle - PITA! So I deactivated it again.
QuickGPS - I assume is responsible for this next problem... When I open Googlemaps without a satellite fix in a particular spot... it tells me I'm in Norway. I'm pretty sure I'm in Sydney Australia!
Could this be that the cell tower (actually it switches between 2, and they're BOTH in Norway) is in the QuickGPS database as being in Norway, when it's really here? Is it a Google maps error instead? Is there a magic portal between Sydney, Australia and Mölndal, Norway?
i have the second problem too..urs is a long way off tho, cause im in florida and it google maps tells me im in california, ive searched everywhere for an answer but there seems to be none
Google don't use QuickGPS to locate you but there own database of cells site locations. If your phone says your on cell 4322, with network x in country y they try to find where that is. Some of the info has come direct from the phone companies, other info is based on users with real GPS and google can try to put the GPS and Cell details together to get a good projection.
Errors when this occur will be down to Google's database being incorrect. The best bet is to make sure you have GPS enabled, so that you can feed back to google the correct location. The other option would be to contact them directly.
No-one else working around me has the same problem (they use different phones) so that would seem to suggest it's not Google's problem - it's the phone's.
Regarding QuickGPS.
I found out that my (wife's) Xperia sometimes fails to update A-GPS data.
"Update failed" and that may last for days!
ActiveSync, WiFi, GPRS access - doesn't matter.
Yesterday it somehow did succeed and I was happy as we need the working GPS for next two weeks.

Most PDA GPS's do not turn on automatically by themselves unless instructed or invoked by a software application. I have not looked carefully at my Jade clone's SIRF's specifications but most GPS under ideal situations can take as little as 42 seconds when warmed up to get four satellites to lock on to. Four satellites are necessary in most sytems are necessary for 3D satellite navigation (satnav or GPS).
What are ideal situations? Glad you asked. Basically, one of the most critical needs for a GPS is accurate time. This is the first item that must be sync'ed by satellites. To use a gross example, let's say your clock is off 60 minutes. In a car that could equate to roughly 60 miles. Satellites need accurate time because when they begin to sync, they will compute what satellites are available to sync with your GPS. Just like the sun, moon and stars are only in the sky at moving intervals of time, only a fixed amount of satellites are overhead at any given time.
Once your GPS begins to sync, ephemeris data (which satellites and the times they are overhead) is transmitted to your GPS. When combined with accurate time, the resolution of where your receiving GPS becomes easier.
The next critical issue is where does your GPS think it is. If the GPS was last turned on at the factory (testing), then it will store that location as its last known position. Guess what? If you're in Paris, France and your GPS was made in Malaysia, your last known position known now as initial positon to the satellites will tell them based upon time to use satellites in the Asian area to compute your satnav position. A GPS without a good initial position will make it difficult for satellites to accurately determine your location which could now takes a minimum of four minutes as long as ten minutes and maybe even hours.
Finally, where is your GPS physically located? In ideal conditions, it is outside with clear sky overhead in a stationary location. It's easier to shoot a sitting duck; a moving target or a GPS on the go complicates all the issues of time, location and signal acquisiton.
To help you, I recommend you download a small cab file that be used in your Today screen. It is aptly called "GPS Toggle". In essence, like a mechanic warming up your car prior to you driving it on a cold day, this plug-in "warms up" your GPS for you prior to needing it.
There is one thing you need to do to help your GPS - it is best for WM to manage it (a recommended feature from Microsoft). Go to the Settings tab, External GPS (why it is called that on my Settings tab is beyond me). Then click through the screens to have WM manage the GPS. On one tab you will asked to choose a Port from which all your programs will access data. You need to use an unused Port. I recommend Port 9 but that is up to you.
The reason for doing this is if WM manages the data, it will keep the GPS on and provide the resolved info to all applications. If the programs managed the GPS, they could selectively turn on and off the GPS and also block each other from using the GPS. You don't want that to happen. That is why MS recommends WM manage the data.
GPS toggle, when installed on your Today screen, will have an ON/OFF switch. When you turn it on, it will on the same line tell you how many satellites it has found and when it has sync'ed with them. When you see that four satellites are in the green (meaning your GPS is found ready for 3D satnav), then you can use satnav program of your choice.
The GPS uses battery power and supposedly is a big drain on smartphones. You want to turn it off and on only as necessary. Hope this helps (it's sticky stuff good info)!

Have tried to download - unable to open (as .php) - do I simply put the file in custom_ruu folder to then flash to the phone?
Thanks in anticipation
It might be a fake.
Open the Settings tab, go to "System" and look for "Device information". The CPU must be Qualcomm MSM 7225 and the full model name should be Touch 3G T3232. If not, it's a fake.
Thanks digsf.
Checked the phone and it would appear to be legit (just as well as it came direct from Orange UK)
It is frustrating that everyone else seems to be getting the roms to work, but for some reason i can't get them to do so - i must still be doing something wrong....

Cloned HTC Touch 3G
I went through the posts - I guess even I have landed up with a cloned HTC Touch 3G. Wonder what the drawbacks are. Somehow after a lot of tinkering I have been able to get my GPS to work (yes it has a built in GPS antenna) and it's accurate!
I set the hardware to COM 3, baud rate 4800
application to COM 0
In Google maps>options>GPS settings>manual settings (COM0 baud rate 4800)
IT WORKED!!
The WiFi can't be turned on with TouchFlo. Anybody has a solution to that?

[Q] Default GPS settings for Rogers branded Focus?

Can anyone tell me the GPS settings for the Rogers Branded Focus?
I've been mucking with my settings, both from the main diagnostic menu and from the GPS test app, and I seem to have messed up a setting somewhere and cannot get "Location" to show on Bing Maps. It keep saying, 'searching' without returning a location.
I'm Interested in the following settings from the Diagnosis app:
(default settings is displayed as sub-heading when entering the option)
MOLR CP/UP
3G MOLR request type
TLS option
and in the GPS test app:
(*#1472365# from diagnosis main screen)
In the ... menu, go to settings:
QoSAccuracyMeter
(read setting)
QoSTimeoutSec
(read setting)
Any help would be handy.
Thanks.
Any updates on this issue??
I have a Rogers Samsung Focus running on FIDO network. I can check it out if you still need ?
Even I am facing the same problem...Maps is unable to locate me..though it was working a few days back..any help will be really appreciated..

Thanks! I too get these values but still GPS is not working..In status it says: Location service is off..when I start the tracking, it says "data unavailable, high accuracy". I have tried to toggle to low accuracy but still it does not get changed. GPSinfo app shows GPS as off..
Please help. GPS was working a few days back..but it has stopped working now..has the chip gone bad?
Is wifi turned on? Toggle wifi on/off then try diagnosis again. I got the same message then toggling the wifi got it working.
Curious?
I've always wondered why the gps lock was so quick. My theory is that the GPS must heavaly rely on AGPS not a real gps using satalites. The reason I say this is that when tweaking those settings I sometime cannot establish a lock for a while. It also seems to be less smooth almost jittery. Also don't tell the faa but I turned the phone on in airplane mode in an airplaine and could not get a gps fix at all so it really leads me to believe these phones must suffer the same issue the old ones do with not getting gps locks as quickly as we hope. This also makes the GPS speedometer useless as I cannot see how fast my plane is going. LOL.

Focus 1.3 GPS Knowledge Dump

Got bad Focus 1.3 GPS performance? Info below helped me. Not for the fainthearted, requires unlocking and registry edits, YMMV, I'm not responsible if you wreck your phone, I pulled some of this info from other posts, etc.
Symptoms:
GPS accuracy/ability to lock degrades. Updates & reflashes make GPS work great for a week or so, then it has trouble locking, then stops locking inside 350 meters at all.
Fixes:
These helped; not sure all are needed.
•Change settings
-WiFi: on (improves initial H accuracy)
-Location: on (obviously)
-Cellular: on (need for initial fix)
-Find my phone: connect and save both checked
•Diagnosis App
Enter "Test Mode" by dialing *#1575# in diagnosis app, then see three options in the "Change state" menu:
-MOLR CP/UP: Set to CP MOLR state
-3G MOLR request type: Set to LocEstimate type
-TLS Option: Set to Tls on
•Registry tweaks (must be fully unlocked, use WP7 Root Tools for reg edits)
-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver\Drivers\GPSOneDevice\OpenStandalone
Change from 0 to 1
-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver\Drivers\GPSOneDevice\QOSAccuracyMeter
Set to 100
•Reset GPS when it stops getting a lock
1-Remove battery
2-Remove sim card
3-Let phone sit with battery out for 10~30 minutes
4-Replace battery and restart without sim card
5-Shut down and replace sim card
6-Run and calibrate compass app before launching GPS app
•Use offline apps
At first I figured my problems came from lousy Samsung satellite GPS hardware. Then I read this on a MS dev site:
-"GeoPositionAccuracy.Default accuracy uses Wi-Fi or the Cell tower signal ..."
-"GeoPositionAccuracy.High accuracy uses the [satellite] GPS receiver ... built into the windows phone device."
-"Developers write apps to use GeoPositionAccuracy.High accuracy instead of GeoPositionAccuracy.Default ONLY WHEN NECESSARY, because it could ... affect the performance ... So, devs use Default accuracy level whenever possible."
So I started wondering if the phone would be more accurate with all data turned off.
Result: works much better with data off. Using MapSnap GPS with no data, there's no more location jumping between cell towers, just a steady track. Tracks me hour after hour on bike rides, hiking under trees, etc. Tracks exported to Google Earth are pretty accurate. Best thing is I can use the GPS offline week after week and it keeps locking down to ~10 meters.
Tip: Get your first fix with data on before going offline. I open MapSnap, get initial fix, then go into airplane mode.
Apps: MapSnap GPS is flawless, but you need to supply and calibrate your own maps. Haven't tested with Nokia Drive because I don't need turn-by-turn, but people say Drive works with no data.
EDIT: Just tested with Nokia Drive and works well with no data. Same drill: get GPS fix in Nokia Drive with data on, leave app running in background, turn on airplane mode, return to app.
Best Guesses for Focus 1.3 GPS Weirdness:
-Driver that juggles cell tower and satellite GPS info is poorly written.
-Cell tower location driver is poorly written.
Thanks for sharing, looks like good info.

[Q] CyanogenMod GPS not working on LTE

On the latest M5 release, and every nightly before, the phone cannot get a GPS lock if it's on LTE. If I go to the network settings and switch off LTE and use 3G, it gets a location lock. Is there anything I can do to fix this?
Note: I'm using the Note 3 for Sprint. No custom Kernel.
Any ideas?
Tried doing a factory reset, but problem still persists. Does anyone know where I can report this?
I know this is an old thread, but maybe this will help someone in the future if they Google search (that's how I found this while looking for a solution). This advice worked for me:
Use root browser to edit the last line in
/etc/gps.conf
The last line will be
LPP_PROFILE=0
Change the 0 to 3. Save and exit.
In advance I will like to appologyse for my communications skills as my english is "NOT VERY GOOD LOOKING".
I can 100% comment on a FIX for the GPS signal lost, many of us have been having this issue for the past few releases of 12.1 - 5.1.1 cianogenmod and I believe I finally found the reason.
When the new system updates gets done the update changes automatically the type of connections that you phone will pick up signal from the towers and satellites. When there is not satellites available it does pick up signal from towers and then based on that compute a calculation and makes a faster FIX that takes 14 seconds at its worst.
So based on that principal idea I went inside the bands and type of connections in the test menu that is in (*#*#4636#*#* ) without brackets and noticed that my phone was set to pick up signals only for LTE/GSM.
This is because this two kind of signals are the most common now days but it is wrong especially for Canada that actually has so many towers with 2g, 3g and CDMA type of conections.
I did a test and inside my home was not getting a FIX picking up just 2-3 satellites and not getting a FIX IN LOCATION, but my new not 4 was so QUICK that I decided to give it a better range of connectivity for tower calculation and went ahead and changed the option to WCDMA and LTE wich are the ones I have notice work the best... I put the one that had the most that includes WCDMA/LTE/GSM etc and ever since it works better than my new note 4.
1 - #*#*4636*#*#
2- Phone information
3 - Set prefer network type.
3 - WCDMA/GSM/LTE
4 - get out and reboot.
This should fix it PLEASE REPORT BACK if this works for you let's keep helping everyone.
