USB Hard Drive connection - Thinkpad Tablet General

Has anyonebeen able to connect successfully an hard drive to TP?
I've tried by all manners without success, even with the docking ... no luck.
Would thisbe possible if we root TP?

for your usb drive to be mounted by the thinkpad, it has to be formatted in fat32. not fat or ntfs.
Ive got 2 hard drives (1terabyte and 500GB) with loads of data on them and are both formatted ntfs. I connected them to my thinkpad, they powered up but did not mount. I wasn't ready to reformat my hard drives with data on them so i didn't try.
However, I think I've got a 2GB usb stick lying around somewhere . I'll format it to fat32 and post some feedback here later.
oh and before trying, go to settings-->storage and enable usb storage devices. otherwise no device would mount on the tablet. even when formatted properly

as darkhandsome18 mentioned, yes but the harddrive has to be formatted in Fat32. Windows XP, Vista, and 7 don't allow you to format harddrives over 32GB within windows. However, you can use a thirdparty utility to format drives that are over 32GB in size to Fat32.
i personally use Fat32formatter (its commandline based) to do this w/my drives.
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/FAT32format.shtml
i did verify that my 1TB external usb harddrive did mount on the TPT, i have not tried to run any videos or music from it though.

i have tried 4 ext HDD (ntfs and fat32), and all of them is not working.... (except for draining my battery for powering the HDD.. )
but for usb flash drive, that is a different matter, is it easily recognized by my TPT..
there is 1 unique problem that occurred to me, while trying to copy files from/into my TPT, there's a notification that file copy is successful, but when i check the file, it's size is 0 bytes..
this has happened to me 3-4 times, unfortunately, i dont know where's the "glitch" is coming from, as i can't replicate the problem anymore (i haven't got any update at all)

I have 2 different 500gb 2,5" drives. My samsung drive works fine playing music on the TPT. The WD drive I have only works sometimes strangly enough.
Normally when I use playback from hdd I use my supercharger power which connects throught the docking port or else the TPT just gets sucked dry of power as the hdd draws almost 500mA's.

If your external drive is formatted at fat32 and has its own power source, you will have success using it with the TPT. But if you are depending on the tablet's USB port to supply enough power to spin the disks in the external hard drive, you will get varying results, depending on the power requirements for your external drive. USB flash drives work fine because they have no moving parts and a low power requirement. As zeb crs stated, you see a huge power drain on your tablet when trying to use an external hard drive without its own power source.

have anyone tried to insert a san disk SDXC 64G SD card into the tablet?

XC is not supported . just HC

Skateddy from the Lenovo forums got a Komputerbay 64GB SDXC Class 10 card to work properly: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-slate-tablets/Max-SD-size/td-p/524571

Just to share that yesterday, after waiting +/- more than 1m, my TPT has recognize an external 1TB HD formated in FAT32

Connecting to drives larger than 32GB

heya...
Not sure if this is the right place to list this, but....
I found a tool that formats any drive larger than 32gb to fat32.
With it I formatted a 1TB hdd in an external, self powered enclosure and connected it to the tablet.
Holy crap it worked like a charm
The tool is called FAT32 Format...google it its free
Yeah. I was pleased to see the USB 3.0 hard drive charger cable port.
Nice find......that really opens up the possibilities.....with a hard drive that stores the stuff on my mac....I can actually use the pro as my main device. I have a 500GB laying on the shelf to play with.
Can you confirm that any pics would show in the gallery?
You can do this from diskpart too (built in Windows tool). Use the FS=FAT32 option.
http://blog.powerbiz.net.au/fixes/using-diskpart-to-create-a-bootable-usb-of-windows-8/
I seem to remember some of the later Samsung devices have exFAT support. It does not have the max 4GB size per file limitation associated with FAT32.
Not sure about the Note Pro though

Can you give some more details. I want to connect a powered 3.0 hub to my 12.2 with an osg to 3.0 usb adapter so that I can use an external (non powered) hdd. I'd also like to try an external dvd drive.
Thanks
I used an OTG cable and plugged in my 500 MB external to it, no problem, no formatting. Do some need to be formatted to work?

How to run Fire TV apps from an External USB Drive

After trying a whole bunch of methods, here is the best way I've found to free up internal storage by moving apps to an external drive.
Complete step-by-step Guide with screenshots
tl;dr version:
1. Mount the drive with StickMount
2. Move the files and "trick" the Fire TV with FolderMount
does this work with XBMC?
those thumbnails are filling up the internal memory really fast

Yes, you can move XBMC's data with this method. But since XBMC is so customizable, modifying advancedsettings.xml like JJ-KwiK suggests is a better option.
awesome, thank you!
Sweet! Thanks for the guide.
So this guide will let you run apps from an external?? Sweet i need to buy a new one lol.. Thanks

xbmc run well from external drive
Hi Guys
Just need some input w.r.t. flash drives and external drives.
What is the biggest size flash drive or external drive we can use on the AFTV?
Fat32 or NTFS file system?
Do you need a powered multi usb device to make the external drive work?
Must you use a powered external drive to make it work in the fire tv?
Hope someone can clear it up.
I connected a non powered multi usb device on the fire tv. the Rii keyboard with bluetooth usb and my 4gb flash both worked on it, but my 1.5TB 2.5" does not want to pick it up.

I'm using a 32GB USB Flash Drive and it works. It's NTFS. Spinning disk must be powered externally for both 2.5" or 3.5".
External SSD might work unpowered....I don't have a drive to test this theory.

I have two Toshiba 5400 RPM Canvio that are unpowered 2.5 and work fine, and a Seagate 500MB 2.5 in a cheapie external USB case that works fine as well.
Yeah I don't understand I've just found my Verbatim USB 3 external 2.5" works but my transcend external 2.5" doesn't. Both are the same size and both are NTFS. I checked and they both work on my PC. Guess it's luck of the draw for 2.5". I can't get an external 3.5" to work...Anyone else?

3.5 inch should be 12V so they would need an external power supply. As far as not seeing a powered 3.5 it could be one of a hundred different issues.

My 2TB 3.5" external works with a 12v power.
External Harddrive 3TB, 3.5" formatted as NTFS works fine for me.
Different sorts of USB stick's up to 32MB formatted as fat32 or NTFS gave me no trouble either.
Images gone after moving Thumbernails to USB stick
Hello,
I 'moved' the Thumbernails folder, using the advancedsettings.xml method. After a new scan run I see all the movie-descriptions, but I do no longer, see any images. They are just not shown..
Any idea, whats going wrong ? I'm really new to XBMC
edit:
After the scan, I deleted the whole content in Andtroid/.../userdata/Thumbernails. The folder itself is still there.
(6GB usb stick/NTFS)
edit2: solution found!
xbmc: System->File Manager->Profile directory->Database delete the Textures13.db and restart the xbmc.
All thumbnails are displayed again!
I tried this method with NFSMW which is approx 4gb after updating and it copied everything over the my usb BUT when i mount it the game says my usb storage device has no room for an update -_- (even though the directory copied is the most up to date version and capacity is 16gb) also, this method does nothing to free up space on the FTV. I had to go in manually to my android/data folder and remove the directory to free up space myself. Might want to add that to the description.

You are mistaken or did something wrong. FolderMount moves the files AND deletes the originals. If the files are set as "mounted" in FolderMount, it will appear as if they are still on the Fire TV. Meaning, if you "ls" the original directory in /sdcard/, you will see all the original files. However, the files are not actually on the Fire TV. To verify this for yourself, go to Settings > About to see your available free space before and after following my directions. You will see your free space increase.

this url states that USB harddrive is not possible.
then how are you guys making it possible ?
must the fire tv be rooted ? before this feature is possible.
i think this is an important topic. as the device is now rooted, alot users would download apps, and they would need the space.
I would like to use USB harddrive with my XBMC.
please advice.
Thanks a lot.

500gb passport HDD not recognized in MOJO

I bought a 500gb WD My Passport drive recently, and it works fine in Windows, but I cannot get it to show up in MOJO. It was NTFS, so I tried changing to FAT32, and it's still not showing up, despite my 32gb Micro SD card being FAT32 and showing up in MOJO. I played around with a few programs that were supposed to mount the HDD, but I still didn't see it under storage, and couldn't find it in ES File Manager. If it helps, I have been plugging it into one of the front USB ports. I figured maybe it needs to be in the back, but it works fine in the front with Windows. Is there a mode that works better with MOJO than FAT32?
Edit: The only thing I need it for is to hold my roms for use with my emulators. And maybe some music videos
Based on my experience, the HDD only work in the 3.0 USB slot.
Thanks, that did the trick. Now I can use my 32gb Micro SD for my Android handheld I bought recently while I use the 500gb hard drive for my MOJO

USB OTG Max Drive Size?

Anyone know the max size of drive attached to MXPE USB OTG?
I verified an old 320GB FAT32 2.5" external USB 2.0 drive works.
However, a new 2TB FAT32 2.5" external USB 3.0 drive does not work. It crashes the phone hard to a self-inflicted reboot every time it starts to mount it.
Both drives "mount" OK to a WinXP system. Both drives have enough extra power through a Y-cable and/or powered USB hub when connected to the phone, so power is not the problem. Both drives were partitioned and formatted to FAT32 using GParted (on Parted Magic boot CD).
Update on power: Newer 2.5" external drives don't need additional power using Y-cable or powered hub.
Any info would be appreciated.
Here I go again, replying to my own queries on XDA Developer.
The phone will happily mount the 2 TB drive formatted to exFAT. And no external power needed either - the phone has enough power to run it with just an OTG cable.
The first attempt using GParted to partition and format the drive to exFAT did not work to get the phone to mount it. Not sure why.
However, using Windows XP command (DOS -like) shell to format it to exFAT worked, with the /FS:exFAT and /Q parameters. Had to install the WinXP patch to add exFAT support too.
Now, time to fill this sucker up.
Why would you need 2 Tb connected to a phone anyway ?

Streaming is OK for convenience, but quality is only so-so, and sometimes there is no available network connection sufficient to stream.
This phone has outstanding audio quality (with Audio Effects OFF), it really comes out with lossless audio like FLAC. High quality video and lossless audio files take a lot of storage. 50-something GB on phone plus 128 GB mSD card are not enough by themselves for the amount of media I have. A 2 TB drive to carry along for USB OTG provides a workaround, I can put my ENTIRE audio and video library on it and it will always be available in lossless quality wherever I am.
I wouldn't run the OTG drive to listen/watch directly, that uses too much power. Use it to copy on to phone them unmount.

USB not detecting properly on 2nd gen shield tv.

So I have inserted the 3.0 usb mini drive and get message usb is running slow should try 3.0 or drive needs to be formatted. I format the drive and it fails then everything gets messed up at that point. es file explorer sees it but says can not open file. In the geforce forums many people are having the same issue. I plug in a usb 2.0 thumb drive and it detects and es file explorer sees it fine. Me thinks an update is needed. Any ideas?
thx
What type are you using?
I have a 128gb sandisk usb stick as adopoted storage in slot 1, in slot 2 I now have usb 3 Verbatim 1gb external drive.
Tried several others as I tweaked my setup and all worked (sandisk, verbatim , samsung)
Having the same problem. I've tried two different USB sticks. Both 128gb up to 400mbps read and 270mbps write. Shield claims both are too slow and fails to format either. Once it fails, the sticks are rendered useless and even after formatting, the shield will not mount either stick.. Nvidia support was not helpful at all. They're going to email me back when they find a solution.
Are they all USB 3? I read it doesn't support less than this so in case you have USB 2 sticks this may be the issue.
If they are USB 3 then I am not sure.
USB 2.0 drive work fine. I have already tested a couple. I got a 64GB 3.0 SanDisk to work. I did not bother formatting when aked. It came formatted in Fat 32.
I have used both USB 2 and 3; most USB 2.0 flash drives has given me a slow warning error, but the USB 3.0 one rocked and adopted just fine.
Same issue here. Just got my 2017, plugged in a sandisk fit 128, and it doesn't detect it. Plugged in some crappy 8gb lexar drive I had and it detects it. Tried formatting the sandisk multiple times, ntfs and exfat and still nothing.
That's very strange, I have the same as you and it worked in both usb slots on the Shield when I was testing what I would like my setup to be before eventually using it as adopted storage in slot 1.
How are you guys formatting your drives, maybe this is the issue? Having said that my 1tb HD in 2nd USB slot is NTFS.
I tried both exFat and NTFS.
Here's what i tried.
Sandisk Ultra Fit 128 USB 3.0 (both NTFS & exFat) - didn't recognize under either format
Lexar 8GB crappy old drive USB 2.0 (FAT32) - recognized
PNY 64GB (not sure of model) USB 2.0 (both NTFS & exFAT) - Didn't recognize as exFAT, but did recognize it as NTFS
Seagate 250GB 2.5" portable drive USB 2.0 (NTFS) - recognized
I've ordered the samsung bar drive (plastic) 128GB to try that now. I can't use the USB 2.0 drives, it's noticeably slower.
Same issue here with 2nd gen shield TV and USB 3.0 Samsung FIT 128 GB USB drive.
After formatting the drive as extended storage it is showing "Samsung drive is ejected" message.
tried formatting using Fat32, NTFS and exFat with no success, also changed the the drive policy to optimize performance then formatted, no success either.
This is becoming a frustrating issue.
Any solution please?
There is an update in the works that corrects most of these issues with USB drives. If you check this thread https://forums.geforce.com/default/...the-next-shield-experience-software-upgrade-/ then you will figure out what I am reffering too.
Bump? I just gave up on my Samsung Bar 128GB (USB 3.0) drive. It seems to work in other devices without any issues. It would occasionally be detected after while in USB port 2, but the format never succeeded. I tried formatting it myself using exFAT and NTFS, and then tried deleting all partitions and still had no luck. Stuck a SanDisk 32GB drive in there and it worked right away for adopted storage.
I just got my Nvidia shield tv 2017 16gb and discovered that the usb port closest to the ethernet port does not recognize usb flash drives. First I tried to use a 128gb sandisk flash drive on that port and it took forever to format so I canceled the process. Then tried over the other port and it took seconds to finish.
I think the problem is related to the OP has there been any breakthrough?
In actuality the port works for connecting a dongle for a keyboard or mouse, but flash drives are a no go. Additionally, the drives connected to that port get blazing hot.
Plug in your hard drive then unplug the Nvidia system plug it back and let it power on

I ended up purchasing a 2TB Western Digital My Passport external drive and it worked right away and haven't had an issue with it since. It's been great, but unfortunately, the original issue was never fixed as far as I know. I've taken a couple updates since, but haven't tried any other sticks since the WD Drive is working so well. If you're on the latest update and still having an issue, then I recommend an external drive.
