my bro got one galaxy s2 yesterday...his mobile has heavy brightful display....where as mine is slight yellowish and light when compared to his phone.......
at maximum level his phone is amazing......where as mine is not....
whats the reason behind this might be?

It will dim over time, just as yours has, you cannot compare an AMOLED which has been used for X amount of months to a new one.

are you sure mate?
From what I've read, screens differs noticeably from one phone to another, whether it's brightness, green/blue/yellow tints, color vibrance, etc. I think it's due to the fact that AMOLED is still a new technology and has to mature a bit more.
With that being said, and assuming you have auto brightness/power saving features off, how much 'low brightness' your phone is? Is it still noticeably dim on full brightness? Not every phone has to be blindingly bright you know.

AMOLED has a lower lifetime than LCD, meaning that the phone will lose it's brightness faster than LCD, however I doubt that you'll notice any difference before 1.5 to 2 years, depending on usage and brightness setting of course.

Yes, it depends of the time/region/QA check?.
I don't know if it could be called less brightness, but there are different profiles for shure.

The OP was talking about the first manufactured SGS2's so I guess we are approaching these timescales and it will dim over a shorter time than 1.5 years but not noticable unless compared how he did, e.g. against a new screen.
I have noticed this too. Me and friend both purchased galaxy s2s in June (i preordered & recieved mine from 02 the first week of june I.e. their first ever batch) and both the displays were noticeably dimmer than another friends purchased only a month or so later.
Obviously this was only when compared directly but it was still somewhat surprising.
My s2 is now 6 months old and my brother has one that's less than a month old, and my dad has one which is about 3 months old.
I will compare the screens and report back any noticeable differences.

I have a Nexus One since its release and I can't notice anything wrong about the brightness.
I use my gs2 at 25% brightness at day time and at night 15%. I don't use any power saving options or auto brightness.

Just compared my screen to my brother's and my dad's and theirs is definitely noticeably brighter. My brothers is a month old roughly I.e. 5 months newer than mine, and my dad's is 2 months newer than mine.
Any idea why this would be the case?

Have you checked that both were in same brighteness and brightness settings I.e movie, custom,etc...

My phone was the 4009th one built (check your IMEI number, it's possible to work out) and it's display is *MUCH* brighter than a brand new, replacement screen (original Samsung screen, not an eBay knock-off) that I bought for a friend's SGS2 about a month ago, so I'm afraid your argument at its basis is flawed.
I remember seeing a picture of where tens of S2s where lined up and the brightness were all over the place. It is what it is.
It is quite visible in some phones. I got my I9100G and my friend got I9100 at the same time. Mine is manufactured in October 2011 and his one is manufactured in August 2011. His screen is noticeably yellow compared to mine. Also, he is on 2.3.3 and I am on 2.3.6. Maybe its the GB version which has different colors.

Look at the bright side (no pun intended), the brighter the screen is the faster it will dim-out and lose it's brightness (Read more on AMOLED lifespan). Also brighter screens are more susceptible to image burns, and obviously eat battery faster. So yeah, I wouldn't be so depressed if I were you.

Colors balance = problem of all Super Amoled untill now.
I doubt they'd release a phone with this much of a problem, probably just a defective unit as I've seen pictures of the GS3 with a white background and looked fine.
The Note is using Pentile as well and that looks fine.

Looks like its a problem with the white balance. I guess it can be easily fixed.
I got to play with a test unit yesterday and it didn't have this issue. Just a faulty unit.
Have you checked with different screen modes? There are 4 modes in GS3.
Maybe faulty like others mentioned or just a test unit made without any QC. Try comparing against another retail unit if you can find.

Its a defective unit for sure,
But i will tell you one thing...
Samsung QC is amongst the worst for their AMOLED screen process. The tolerances they have for screens are borderline "anything goes". The Note had screen issues with "pink" and so did the galaxy nexus. The SGS2 had green/yellow issues... Its a lottery;/
You may get a great one, or it may be rubbish,
It took me 6 SGS2's to get a nice even AMOLED screen, its the big downside to AMOLED;(

I've used galaxy nexus for 2 months, before I gave it to my niece.
One thing I noticed with the galaxy nexus display is the color banding on grey background at low brightnesses. I have checked several galaxy nexus's at local samsung store and all of them had this issue. Surprisingly there is no similar issue on galaxy note.
I wonder if this problem exists on galaxy s3?
as op have mentioned it as a final unit lets hope we wont see many such defective screens. Spending some nice money and seeing a screen with some problem will be totally annoying and frustrating.
edit: in all the videos i have seen so far i can clearly spot a blue tint in the screen. hope supercurio starts to work on his voodoo color for sgs3 soon

This S3 is not faulty. My camera has a little problem on white balance. I will update more pics from new white balance setting.

How's the screen clarity (sharpness) and colors compares to Galaxy Note? 'Cause I wasn't impressed with Note's display much. Despite the higher pixel density, S2 seems to have more details in pictures when I compares Note and S2 side by side. I wonder if the same thing happens to S3.
btw: You must be the guy on tinhte, haven't seen this topic up there . Is your S3 a test unit ?
I believe the difference between the note and s2 will be to with the physical screen size. Smaller screen will be better with less pixel density.

I have to say that side by side the S2 screen looks more vivid, brighter, and text is clearer.
My son came over with his new unlocked S3 and I have been playing with it to see if I want the upgrade. The screen looks pinkish on a white backround compared to the S2. Also the brightness seems not as strong as the S2.
Am I missing something, dissappointing to say the least.

Well other than the pink tint, poor view angles, pentile matrix and gross over sharpening artifacts, the galaxy s3 display is much superior. It has much better resolution. But I agree with you text looks poor in default mode.

On the above review one can clearly see that the s3 is superior to s2 in terms of sharpness and as far as the vividness goes they are nearly the same but the brightness on s3 is lower than s2.
Not really. I did a comparison with my friend S2 a few days ago. S3 screen beats S2 hands down. S3 is brighter, colours are more vivid, sharper and viewing angle is better too.

Checked my S3 against the S2 of a colleague... S2 cannot even be compared, it's just soooo blown out of the water. OK, S3 is pentile, but really it's got a wonderful screen.
I compared my new sgs-III (i9300) with the sgs-II of my girlfriend and in my eyes the screen of the SGS-III is much better in every single aspect.

I loved my GS2 a lot because in many ways it was just so ahead of its time but the HD screens look better, especially on full brightness in the store displays. I looked at the Note, GS2 HD, Gnex, GS3 and they were all better than the GS2 screen.
But yeah, back to my point. I believe GS2 might have triggered the nostalgia factor in many because it was just so damn good. Similar to how Die Hard 3 sucked compared to the first two and Soul Calibur one was the best game ever while the sequels were jokes. It is all about first impressions so large that the sequels can't possibly meet.
Technically though, in my eyes, the HD screens look a lot better. Defintely not as wow as when I first saw the GS2 with a bright live wallpaper though.
As my exp, overall, S3 display better S2 display . S2 display got many problem and not uniform. S3 display are uniform and HD display look like much better than WVGA, down the disadvantage of Pentile panel.

What a strange thread. I used to think my SGS2 had an amazing screen, and I guess it did. But after using my SGS3 for a few weeks the SGS2 now looks incredibly grainy in comparison. Sure there's some tint to the SGS3 but overall it's a huge upgrade.

I would say that this is the issue.
I had one on and my screen looked garbage. I had to take it off.

It's probably not the screen protector. As mentioned before, many S3s have defective screens with tint issues. The extent of the discoloration varies from unit to unit, so your son might have been unlucky and gotten a very bad one.
Samsung knows of this issue so you can get an exchange.

Actually almost all S3 I tested in stores has a pink tint to the whites. A few of them are more yellowish than others but I can safely say none of them has perfect white.

There won't have perfect white on Samoled screen. It never meant to be in the 1st place. Mine a little blue tint. But I like it

Oct 2nd: Today I hand on Note 2 import from Hong Kong but I don't like the screen: still not better than S3, I think S3 screen a little bit better. How about yours?

Tomorrow I will hand on again cause I did not buy it .
I remember on my S3 there was a setting in the display menu....I can't remember on top of my head but this setting would allow the S3 to optimize the screen image to save battery. If this setting is enabled on your note like my s3 was then that could be why its not being brighter.
The only thing disappointing about this are the other people showing the Note II being better than the iPhone.

I messed around with an S5 demo unit in my local O2 shop last weekend and performed a direct comparison between my S4 and the S5 looking for this very thing. There was no smearing at all on the S5, where as it's blatantly obvious on the S4 in comparison.

No, I didn't. But, speaking as someone who has owned an S4 for 12 months, it doesn't just show itself in this environment. As I said, I ran a direct comparison between my S4 and the S5 whilst in the shop with both set to low brightness, and in that particular environment the S4 smearing was obvious and the S5 didn't manifest any at all. So at the very least it is considerably better than the S4 and I'd go so far as to say the issue has been rectified.

No, I didn't. But, speaking as someone who has owned an S4 for 12 months, it doesn't just show itself in this environment. As I said, I ran a direct comparison between my S4 and the S5 whilst in the shop with both set to low brightness, and in that particular environment the S4 smearing was obvious and the S5 didn't manifest any at all. So at the very least it is considerably better than the S4 and I'd go so far as to say the issue has been rectified.

They S5 review by GSM arena, they did mention the smearing issue when brightness is set to low. Atleast it is noticeable in lower brightness.

It certainly wasn't noticeable on the S5 I used in the shop. As said above, at the very least it's considerably better than the S4.

Hello, today i bought new s5 and tested in a dark room with video that shows "quick moving black objects" and the result is :
the s4 pink smearing is still affected on s5
the entire screen background is turned from s4 BLACK to s5 BLUE and that can help hide the smearing because no black color is showing(pixel off)
this may result more consumption of battery (i think) .
you can still notice the pink smearing when in dark room set screen bright to lowest, go to Phone Dial and fast pressing on the 3 dot icon (more) on top right under the Contacts icon > PINK PINK!! (because this background is black)

I believe gsmarena and anandtech both mentioned smearing. Not a big big deal but I wish Samsung would do better.

I'd take the S5's SAMOLED with smearing under extreme low light over any competing IPS with backlight bleed at all levels of backlight.
To each its own, that's like runflat vs regular tires to each pros and cons

A little something I found that helps greatly reduce the "purple" smearing:
1. Set your screen profile to Pro Photo or Movie(preferred).
& more importantly.
2. Download Lux from the Play store. Enable night mode and set the White Balance to Fluorescent.

Yep... My S5 and Note 3 have near-identical levels of smearing at the lowest brightness in the middle of the night in a dark room.
But if that's the price I pay for having a screen where black really is black (as opposed to dark grey) and doesn't use battery for black, I'll take AMOLED any day.
Yes, it suffers in the same way.
It's a problem related to AMOLED technology. If you use a totally black screen, all points are off. When you move a line in this screen, the points must be switched on and the response time cause the problem.
The only solution is not using a totally black background. Use a DARK one, but not full black. This, for exapmple, is what Samsung have done in the setting screen. Try it.
First of all, let me say that prior to reaching the decision to open this thread, I did some quite extensive research on what I am going to talk about, but only found references to the smearing thing.
So, the problem, as quick as possible...
Do you use Tapatalk? I'm sure many of you do. You know how it's got a dark gray background, right? Well... that dark gray background... look closely. The bottom portion of the screen is going to be gray (actual gray!), while, as you go toward the top side, you'll see the color turning into a purple hue... :/
Same thing can be observed in the inverted version of Play Store (such as the one included in SlimKat) which has the same background as Tapatalk - dark gray.
I think that the top side of the screen is now displaying gray as darker purple because of the CPU (it's right there, heating the display all the time).
Anyone else experiencing issues like this one?
Thats normal with super amoled display.. I bought s4 recently and got this same issue and also some horizontal and vertical lines in the display which are only visible on low brightness.. I asked for replacement and after my phone replaced twice I got twice new phone with same issue.. I have also searched over net about this isuue and this problem is common in super amoled display.. so just make ur brightness more or equal to 50% and those issues will get vanished..

I know it is a common issue with Super AMOLED displays. Having owned the Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy Note and Galaxy Note 2, I'm well aware of it. Just figured they have figured it out and made the displays much better in the Galaxy S4. Truth be told, I've owned this S4 for almost 8 months now, so it's done its job, lol.

No. I'm on the old MGA bootloader, so no Knox. I haven't bought this phone from a retail store, but from a guy, who... RIGHT... he said he has a friend in Samsung store so it can act as a warranty. That was 7 months ago, though. Anyway, will give that a shot. Regardless, hope the issue I'm having doesn't spread and become worse!

Yea, the screen was next to perfect when I bought it - if you disregard the white color being generally inconsistent across the entire screen, which is the case for almost every AMOLED display out there (to some extent). But the gray color was the same.
To be clear, my device is a I9505, not I9500. I hear there are some differences in screens between the two models, with the I9500 having a slightly warmer screen.
@coolkoushik07, @TRusselo... Are your screens acting up, too?
I have had a samsung captivate for a year and a half, an S3 for 8 months, and now a S4 for about as long, with never one screen issue (aside from dropping it)

I'm assuming you did check thoroughly. Not like other people I know do, like, say, my girlfriend (glances quickly at the screen while in Chrome, observes nothing, thinks I'm crazy) :silly:
