ir leds lets u take night photos.... - Hardware Hacking General

hey guys i am happy to hear that xda had started hardware mod topic... so i think i should post one of my ideas...
i am taking about taking night photos( of course u can take one with a phone having an led flash or so.. but it is not about photo taken using an led flash). it is all about night vision photos. so r u interested? if so believe me u can do it with ur normal phone camera. no oter spec is needed. any camera can do it.
so the fact behind this is the normal ccd used in cameras( here our phone cameras which also use ccds) can detect ir light which cant be detected using bare human eyes...
so u can do some spy things using it???( lol "chicks" gona hurt u a lot).
all u have to make a light source using ir leds( those u find on remote controls) , get few 10-20 of them from ur nearest radio shack, assemble it in a suitable cabin( a small cardreader cabin can do the trick), along with some li-ion battery pack, a control switch, and a charging port( if u want to charge it), after u finish, turn on the ir light, turn on ur camera( ofcourse u have to turn ur led flash light off), carry both of them into a total dark place, viola, u can see things in the room on ur phone, and with no viasible light out there, no one gona detect u..
actualy, i had done it with my k800i sonyericsson cybershot phone, in which i used the fastport connector to power the light source, u can get about 3.2 v from the port. but for new android device, we cant get some v-out since 99% of phones are usb slaves, and not usb hosts. but if u have a phone/tab with a usb host port, ofcourse u can get upto [email protected] from it.
i will soon update the thread with circuits and photos, but now i have an exm time out there.. so be in touch. also if somebody managed to make one, u should share it here.

Our cameras are able to detect IR lights, ccd and CMOS both can. The only problem is they have an IR filter. That's why people IR mod their camera, not their flashes.
Unless you can dig around INSIDE the camera sensor itself, I don't think it's possible.

Hey, this is actually a good idea, I've never thought about it this way.
I've got an infra-red night-vision monocular that's got an IR LED on it, so I turned out all the lights, flicked on the LED, and opened my X10's camera. I couldn't see anything through my phone, except the LED itself.
I'm gonna go buy some more LEDs...
EDIT:
I'm not an expert on cameras, so I forgot about the IR filter. That's why it wasn't working.

Well I'm not a 100% sure if its the same with small cameras, but I know in order for a dslr to take IR photos they need a modification to the sensor itself.

Wait.. Then what about the LEDs on the remotes? Aren't they IR LEDs too? They can be seen by cameras.

Yeah, but the filter makes them dim. They're actually quite bright.

I've done IR mod to several phones and digital camera I had, and with a bit of luck and patience you can get some beautiful results
You need to open camera, reach sensor, and remove IR filter, then take floppy or the dark edge of old camera film, cut two pieces about the size of original filter, place it on sensor and reassemble camera. Set it to black and white, and go to some park on a sunny day, you'll forget about the world when looking at the photos...

IR filters vary a lot in quality - cheaper cameras (like those found in cell phones) tend to be weaker.
However the most interesting results would come from a complete hot mirror removal and replacement with a visible-blocking IR-pass filter. (This is what many IR mods for SLRs do).

ok dudes as i already forgot to notice about the ir filter, though cellphone cameras have one, they are much weaker than professional camera's. so if u managed to get more ir light, ofcourse u gan get the results, for that u have to use powerfull ir leds. like 1w or 3w ir leds, google it. i think ebay have them, they are bit cheep.. 9-10 $'s.
and with my k800i, man itz a true camera phone . though itz 3.2mp,( k790,k800,k810 cybershots) no other 3.2 snapz from any other phones( even those having more mp ratings) cant beet itz snapz. and i swear a camera driver modification makz it a small SLR( yap i mean it). with that driver changed i can take picz in 3200 iso, and 2 second shutter speed. ( lol the driver have a hell of options juz like photoshop cs6, u will take atleast a weak to learn all!!!) . so i can take pic even in moon light with out xenon flash. so ir filter is not a problem for it. thats why i got it a success.

showlyshah im glad you had success with yours i dont know much about my facinate or cameras. i just recently learned how to root it without brickining my samsung but i intend to try your little experiment with the ir leds i hope i get as much success out of mine as you have with yours

Yap itz just like day. But the odd thing is he is using ready made devices, whereas we are taking about cheep setup which would cost below 20$.
send from my hd2 @ miui 1.12.2

Also guys u can try to make same setup with visible white light source, all u have to care is to obtain an led with cct about 4000-7000 range( don't get confused cct in simple words means the colour of light produced by a light source. Warm white colour( like those of incandescent lamp) have cct below 4000 whereas neutral white( sunlight) ranges from 4000 - 6000 and cool white ( those like cfl's or tubelights) have cct 7000- 8000. ) . So we need neutral white for daylight like illumination. And a 1w or 3w led will do the trick. Check the cct before u buy 1. I personally recommend CREE led for it.
So u need not have to worry if ur phn don't have a flash, or if itz is so poor in lighting. Happy video/ photo shooting...
Regards.
Inform me if u want circuits..

Can you be more specific? I have an old K810 collecting dust, would be great to put cam to use. What driver mod are you using? Where can I get it?

You do realize why IR filters are in pretty much every camera? Well at least one reason. The wave length of IR is much thinner and can travel through light/thin clothing. Try using IR as a source of light, or find a camera without IR filter and rely solely on the suns own IR radiation and we'll be having interesting results
Please corrected me if I'm wrong, I very vaguely know IR filtering and photography.

Check the forum named se-nse.com. the greatest se forum around. For that u have to patch ur phone. If its cid 53, u have to downgrade it to cid 52, then patch, then u have to applay a patch for camera and then change the driver. If u need i will send u the patch and driver.

Yap u r true. But if u totaly remove the ir filter, it will make ur normal pics ugly. So u have to add a manual exposure adjusting window. Ir lights will easily penitrate through thin cloths and thats why i said chickz gona hurt u.

Poor camera quality pictures, looking for solutions

I am pretty much dissapointed with the pictures I have obtained with my Universal's built in camera.
Sometimes - most of the times - dont really beleive it is a 1.3 MPixels cam.
So,
1. Do you think using another software to take pictures would improve performance/quality?
2. It is possible to use another software to manage the camera?
3. Maybe, it's just me not being able to use it properly. Any advice to get good quality pictures?
have you checked the pictures on your pc?
i thought this until i looked on the pc and they were actually pretty impressive, dont be fooled my the on screen preview after youve taken a pic
yes... checked them out on a PC.. but no good quality. The problem is that if you're taking good quality pictures.. the it must be me.. :?
Anyway I recon that good pictures can be obtained under good conditions (light, etc.), but indoors... no way, at least for me.
i've seen on my HTC wizard that in the registery the camera can be edited things like bitrate too, havent tried it yet.
Ive gone from a D500 to this. Both 1.3 megapixel cameras, but the images from the samsung are far larger and far better quality. The images I get from my XDA are terrible.
maybe -hope so - it's just the software.
Could the camera be used with another soft? maybe from another WM5 device.
HTC has used extremely cheap and low quality camera sensors :-( Theres not much you can expect from its camera....so i guess its wise to accept the fact and move on :S
There are tons of dead pixels, and fails to reproduce the colors accurately...its just a "i have a cam on my phone too" feature, and nothing of any practical use!
cheerio
s
its enough to get the point across say car accident , for insurance or the poice, it would be enough to convince surlly.
Took some pictures yesterday for first time on Universal, on top of a hospital roof, sun shining.
So as normally happens in those situations you can not see what you are taking properly due to the screen contrast etc. in the sun. ( same on all camera phones I have had )
Just used the standard settings, didnt change anything, have just downloaded them onto the PC and I am quite impressed with the quality.
On par if not better than some of the camera phones I have had in the past.
Just checked settings and I was on 640 x 480 capture size and ambience auto.
So for me a thumbs up to the quality from a camera phone.
share one of those beautiful pics...
wanna check if it's just me..
Perhaps a silly question - but have you made sure your camera settings are at 2M (1200x1600) to take your photos. The exec defaults to a much smaller size.
cheers
hehe, yes.. thanks.
I'm just saying that quality doesnt fit in in a 1.3 Mpixels camera, my POV.
The camera is useless imho. sometimes its good to catch stupid pics of people who have parked terribly or funny signs on petrol station doors but all in all they would have been best just leaving it out.
The only solution is to get a decent camera.
JAmes
I'm an amateur photographer (with the lovely Nikon D50), and no doubt the Universal's picture quality is not very good. However, I see it as a bonus add-on for the Universal rather than a proper feature. Say, I don't carry the Nikon D50 into my lessons at school all the time (until recently, when we had our very last lessons at school for the rest of my life!); with the Universal I was able to quickly take pictures of my classmates sleeping in our maths lessons or film our chemistry teacher burning jelly babies (they literally scream and burn when they react with some solution!).
Anyway, my conclusion is that the camera on the Universal is good for quick snaps, but not good for family portraits.
PS: HTC, come on, you call yourselves "High Tech Computer Corporation" and you can't even manage a tiny camera?
Whilst on the topic, yesterday I tried to take pictures of a beautiful wheat field in the sun, but the picture I got was just a very dark image, no matter where the sun was relative to the lens. Changing the settings to "Sunlight" or "Automatic" did not help either.
Very disappointed, and you don't often get this lovely weather in the UK!
To the OP, there's no easy way to say it: the camera is crap, like 99.99% of all mobile phone cameras. The CCD they use are cheap as dirt, and unless you're experiencing optimum conditions (such as bright, bright sunshine outdoors), there's no way you'll ever take any decent pic with this phone regardless of the software.
Glad I could clear that up!
It does not seem that bad to me,
settings = 2M(1600x1280) and daylight
I have not resized the pic , so sorry if it runs off screen
This is just before my ride to Turkey and back from UK

Exactly - it's a phone/PDA with a free camera, not a camera with a phone/PDA... Miracles you will not get!
The quality is acceptable to me but getting the best result is sometimes difficult. My major problem the handling, choosing the right settings for the occasion is a bit awkward.

Camera Bad Quality ???

Hello!
I have a Qtek 9000 with the latest ROM and I realized that the photos I've taken where there is low light are pretty bad! Even If I activate flash option... All seam very shaky!!!
Is it normal?? How can I solve it?
Txs,
Deiota
buy a camera that has image stability built in and a proper flash... I have no idea why the put cameras in devices like these, the quality is crap generally unless you have good lighting and a stable hand. On the other hand I have a SE K750i which has a brilliant camera, auto focus and stability, again though unless the light is good the pictures are crap.

lol, not mean to sound funny, but its shaky because you dont have a steady hand, im no photographer, but i never had a shaky picture from my exec , you just need to take your time with your picture taking, or lean up against something, that works too.
Joey
At night?
Well I have problems, specially shotting to my nine months baby (can make her still...) needed a faster shoting time...
Thxs, Deiota
What are the best settings for night shotting?
really to be honest, the best settings are 'night' with the flash on, but if its tooooooo dark, there is no point, the flash isnt strong enough, if you have it on auto, it doesnt work as well.
i just got a new puppie, and its the same, i cant het her to stay still long enough to take a pic.
i think the problem with mine is that i dont have enough memory, cos it just seems to take about 10 seconds after i press the shoot button for it to take the picture, during that time the object i am taking a picture of is out of frame, very annoying.

Better Camera?

Hi guys. I was thinking about the camera of the ipaq 614c - it sucks. But is it the camera hardware or just the software. My gues is the software. I have tried Cool camera and the barcode recognition software Barcorama. It seems they both capture images from the camera and none of the blurry and distorted "effects" are present. The only problem is that Cool Camera doesn't work properly with the ipaq and the image is always rotated 90 degrees and shrinked
so it's no use for now. My question is : Is there a newer (and probably better) version of the Arc Soft camera software. As you know, they don't sell it as a separate piece of software - they sell it to manufactures to implement it into roms. I saw there are new versions that support image stabilization, smile detection and so on. Is there any phone that has that superior software and would it work with the ipaq camera.

Nope, it's the hardware that sucks. No matter what soft u throw at it, u won't get better images. It's the lens that's in no relation with the CMOS-chip
Dirk
Are you sure
Yes, technically speaking, this is what causes most of the cameras to suck.
Lens aberation and so on. BUT.
I have some experience in photography and physics and the things i see here are not due to the lens (at least not only)
If you have noticed that some of the images get distorted in a strange way (something like a photoshop filter "twirl") - that's not the lens, as it happens only from time to time on some photos. I must say that blutty and coloured images on the edges are probably because of the lens, but the other things are due to poor software. I have taken images with still hands and they sometimes come out very well. But when you move even a little - the photo is blurry as hell.
So, if someone has an idea of an alternative camera App that might work, i'm willing to help with whatever I can - say can we make Cool camera work on the ipaq, or some other camera application extracted from another phone.

Hi,
Yes, i'm sure ... As u say urself, even moving a little makes the pic blurry. In fact it's almost impossible to have a 'rocksteady' hand, cos of the relative high power u need to press the button. And again ; the lens is much to close on the chip and much to sharply bent to give good images. Just take a pic and look at it. U'll see that the sides are showing almost everything on the left or right from u. Looks like HP built a combined 28-35mm lens on 4mm²...
It's even better viewable when u take panoramapics ... then u get a kind of 'ondulated' result.
The only real solution would be : removing the lens and put something more apropriate in....
Dirk
Well that's an argument I wouldn't disagree with. I have noticed that "fish eye" effect in panoramic shots and the built-it blur effect on the edges of the image.
That's it - the camera is on par with an old 1.3Mpx siemens M75 and a lot suckier than the fixed focus cameras in samsung i600 and motorola Q9. Can't they learn it's not about the megapixels. Oh wait, they know it, but your average custumer doesn't. Whatever. Hp - never again dor a lot more reasons than the camera, which i actually don't use that much, but still...

Right, you got it Even more surprising is the fact that HP has the techno for building decent pictureboxes (i have one ), but it seems impossible to use that technology to put a decent cam in a phone. Might be cos of the size ? The smaller you have it, the worse gets the pics... bottomline : phones are not pictureboxes, and will never be.
Dirk
Speaking of the camera i have only 1 question ( dumb ) ...how do you zoom ? Haven't found this option !
you can only zoom when you are not in max resolution (3M), change to lower and you can zoom, the zoom slider is on the left side and you can use keypad (6 & 4) to control too
Maybe i'm missing basic photo knowledge but, the bigger the resolution ,smaller the zoom ?
at least that's how the ipaq work, i have no idea about the reason but then you don't really expect it can zoom much since then lens can't really move much like a real camera anyway

Hi,
It's an electonic zoom, nothing to do with the lens. If you want to 'zoom' the software uses an alogorithm to recalculate the picture and display the 'center' part of it as larger (zoomed). Gives nice distortions too
Dirk
as I definitely won't use my camera, do you know a program that can use the led of the camera as a flash light and that works on 614C ?
I tried nuelight and torchbutton but none of them work on this device ...

New Camera Tricks***GET AWSOME PHOTOS*** No mods

After bringing up the camera issues and being attacked by Faithful EVO Thumpers, I decided to do something about it and find some easy home made fixes so that people could get HD IN DEPTH photos with out switching to a phone with a much better camera (Samsung-Clears throat)
I found that the photos are naturally over exposed and over saturated. If you have bought a EVO and taken a picture you have probably scratched your head as many times as i did trying to figure out why the camera on your old phone was WAY better.
MAIN Problem - The Evo has 2 LED flashes. This is far more that the phone ever needed for photos.
I used the stock MIUI camera app for most of these pictures. My second go to app would be Camera 360 Ultimate. Which has stunning effects.
The photos i am posting were raw images. I adjusted the saturation and contrast to suit my taste. No effects were used. In some cases i made the photo black and white
I have had the best photos with the lates MIUI ROM. Only because the camera controls allow you to change a lot of dynamic properties that will provide you with all sorts of great photos.
This is a list of the settings that work best for me.
1. FOCUS MODE- TOUCH-- Works best for DEPTH OF FEILD
2. COLOR EFFECT- NONE- MONO FOR BACK AND WHITE
3. ISO- AUTO---- YOU WILL SEE WHY IN A SEC
4. METERING- CENTER WEIGHTED
5. ANTI BANDING - OFF -
6. STABLE SHOT- 1 SEC-
7. 8 MP
8.SUPER FINE QUALITY
9. BRIGHTNESS- -1.0 TO -05
10. Contrast and Saturation at 2- For those with a non miui rom. REDUCE THOSE UNTIL ALMOST ALL COLOR IS GONE. adjust back up to your liking
11. Sharpness is at max
12. White balance should always be INCANDESCENT if indoors unless you are going for a desired effect.
13. Flash is auto or ON
These settings are pretty much universal regardless of what camera app you use.
Camera 360 allows you to reduce the compression.
***** HERE IS THE TRICK*****
Go grab some REAL D 3d glasses. They are free and most people have them laying around the house from the last 3d film they went to.
Cut a small circle from the lense of the glasses---BIG ENOUGH TO COVER THE LED LIGHTS.
Mount it over the flashes with your own prefered method. Do not block the flash--Only cover it with the shaded Plastic lense.
THATS IT. Hope this will inspire some people to take creative photos and enjoy having a phone that also takes good photos.
I was tired of watching random people get jumped by Forum trolls who would rather defend the device instead of make it better.
THE PURPOSE IS TO CONTROL OR CONVERT THE LIGHT OF THE FLASH. I also had great photos by completely covering one LED with
I took these photos in a very dim room that has an old light. Conditions do not matter. The more natural light you have the better but be creative and let me know if you find something better to cover the flash with.
Download the zip for entire photoshoot and starting ideas
That's awesome but I've gotten great quality pics just ad good ad those with no tricks. Obviously not straight from the camera app. With help from pic say pro. Are these in any way edited?

These are raw photos. The only edit i did was black and white
I found that adjusting the saturation all the way down makes awsome black and white. add contrast to darken the backround. I took these with horrible lighting indoors.
Im sure these pics will turn out great once i get em into PHOTOSHOP. Put the app on your phone and and you almost dont even need a 700$ camera----excluding the lenses-
More pics
These are the things that were next to me. Im sure with some time i will develope new ways to capture the world.
These photos have not been edited The color pics were taken with camera 360 ultimate which did have a light hdr setting. The best photos are toooo large to upload.

I have not tried pic say pro yet. Sounds popular....
Just checked out your pics and they are impressive.
This is the only light in my room
This is the only light i have in the room. I think this method works best for those with bad room conditions
Works very well. I cut out a small piece of the 3d glasses, and put it over the flash, behind the phones' back cover, so the cover holds the plastic in place. Thanks for the tip, it took me like 3 minutes, and I can see the improvement in the flash.
wow, i knew it had a good camera, but shots like these i may even use my evo as my only digital camera(not really) but still great. I hardly ever use the camera app but i think that may change.
Hmm, great tip! I'm glad it has a better camera than we all thought, and I'd be all over this, but I just bought a d7000.

thanks dude....
i dont have any issues with my camera...and pics..
but i am not that picky.
will give this a go.. and see.
Cute trick, polarize the flash instead of the lens. I've done tricky stuff with gels with my nikon, never considered the evo to have a serious enough cam to bother, but I have a ton of these glasses lying around that I might have to try this with.

Thanks! I upgraded from a D40x, and so far, it's quite the upgrade. I'm loving it.
will this method/settings improve pictures in general or just closeups and depth-of-field shots in suboptimal lighting?

Camera 2 is just a "FAKE" or not? (Closed)

Hello guys
I was serius about the Picture Quality when i press the 1x Button. For me it is a verry bad Quality.
So i Take my Magnetic Stand and Take Pictures to compare.... then i relized i just need to cover up the Camera with the bigger lens/ glas in it.
Then i pressed the "1x" and now i know that this 2cend Camera is a BIG lie.
Or is it because iam using the OTA Update 8.3.13 =/ ????
Please guy´s try it out or help to enable the 2cend Camera

The 2nd camera (with telephoto lens) doesn't work in low light conditions. It works perfectly well in ample lightning. Also, 2nd camera works in portrait mode, so it definitely isn't fake
The 2nd camera is used for lossless zoom in 2X, and for depth of field in portrait mode. It's not fake.
you're a dumbass
I can Cover up the lens and Zoom in to 2x. Cameera 1 is still on!
When using Camera Portät mode, Camera are switching to the 2cend and make with software effect the Blur just like the Mods with Front Facing Single Camera.
I want the ZOOM in Normale use.!
I am sitting on my Desk and my Sony A7 II say 1/100 f2 ISO 100. Defenetly bright enough for no Low light.
Ithink it is Time for a real Camera Mod who i can say which camera to which settings to use.

I cant give you a thumb up so here it is! Thx :victory::highfive::fingers-crossed::good:
You can force the camera app to use the telephoto lens in low light situations. Go to the camera app, tap options, tap manual, then select Lens as Tele. I checked this the first day I got the phone, so definitely no fake lens fiasco here
Well that is a answer we're are waiting for! Thx Dude awesome!
So it is sad that it not switching the Camera´s automatic or give us a shortcut to this (except the Portät mode).
For me it is finally clear how to use this twin setup correctly.
Small changes and it is a perfect Camera App =)
I like to Close this Thread at this point Thanks for everybody! =)

Close if you want ? needed bhi na tha agar chutiyapa nahi dikhana chahta hota to ?
The telephoto lens is not used by the app in low light. Go outdoors ( during day time) and test by keeping the finger.
