I am curious, what else is there besides tether apps, that we can put on here that the evil ATT doesn't want us to have.

Well I haven't found too many other apps in the normal Market that aren't in the ATT one beside the Tethering software. Then again turn the phone to Airplane mode while on a Wifi network and you are no longer filtered by ATT so you can install what ever you want as long as you have root.

Lol...apparently ATT blocked a game called Toss It by Boolba Labs because theirs an option to toss an iPhone into the trash can. Lol.
Is it..."legal" that ATT cab filter apps they choose?? I mean they're already blocking installing third party apps. I mean what "legit" reason could they come up with?

i'd be more concerned with removing the junk at&t wants you to have rather than putting stuff they may not like on there!

Do u guys think its safe to install Sprint's new Total Equipment Protection App? Im kinda worry that with the app they could tell our devices is rooted and refuse to give us a new device if needed.
I wanna use it because it coz has cool stuff like GPS ur device online and stuff

Epic isn't supported. Go on the website. As of Monday, the Epic was the only Android phone not supported by the app.

Eh, it's on the supported devices page, but they have the wrong picture and say only 2.1 is supported.
With that said, I have it installed on my stock EB13 with no problems, and I just tried the "locate my phone" thing and it worked just fine. Unfortunately I have no idea if it would be able to tell if you are running a custom ROM or anything, but I plan to uninstall it before I root and load up a new ROM again, just to be safe.

well it is possible that they can see what os we are running as it pulls the info from the device. websites do this all the time. we hear reports of an android version like 2.3 or 2.4 showing up in access logs of who visited the site... i would think the app would do something like that also. so i would not use it... i use lookout mobile security.

To be honest, that app scares the crap out of me. I don't need Sprint telling me they will not support my device anymore cause they had an application that told them what was happening on my phone. I would much rather use another application. Would suck if I had hardware failure, and they decided they will not replace it under warranty because of the evidence they have on hand to show that I was using root and foreign Roms.

I installed the app on my rooted dk28 epic and ill let you guys know. I'll know in the next couple days.

It does not work on my custom rom. I'm running Nebula, which declares itself in about phone. TEP program probably checks version numbers.

AFAIK this app won't run on a modded Epic for some reason. I hear it runs fine on the Evo roms.

i wounder if sprint can tell if your rooter and custom from just connecting to data services such as 3g and or 4g? They could pull simple things like version numbers... we could blame it on the 20 apps that google pulled that rooted phones....

It may just be a special app, but I doubt it. I think the MIUI was written for the KIRFers of all the apple knockoffs.

I wouldn't doubt if it had some sort of tracker included, but I have enough crap made in China, including most of my phone, so I'm not even trying it.

Carrieriq is asked for by sprint to be included in all Android phones, however, all of its features are turned off, so the only impact it has on you, the user is ~20kb of memory space less.

Probably wrong but the dropbox folder is for users that go to the market on their computers and download apps from there. You can have your phone download an app straight from your comp for those that don't know.
But aren't all there privacy issues understandable??? All the noobs that never mod their phones want a more pleasant experience....well this is what they have to give to get a better user experience...

Its easily disabled even if you don't use a ROM that strips it out (like Fresh Evo 4.2).
Here is how. Use titanium backup to freeze the following programs:
"HTC IQAgent 2.3.3"
"IQRD 2.3.3"
Freezing or uninstalling those 2 programs completely disables Carrior IQ. You can verify this yourself by looking at your logcat. You'll see some errors show up saying:
Unable to start service Intent {act=com.htc.android.iqagent.action.ui19 (has extras) }: not found.
This is caused by the system trying to start IQ, but failing. Uninstalling these programs should be ok, but I choose to freeze them just in case there are issues that arise from their removal.

It has a huge impact on the phone and is one of the main reasons why sense roms are slower than AOSP. There have been more than a few times I've found it using up about 30% of my CPU and causing everything else to run like crap.

What you guys don't seem to get is that they have been doing this for longer then you think! There are a few apps things running that do this in 2.1.

Thanks for this. I backed it up in case there were problems (which I don't expect) and then uninstalled it. I'll post here if I get any errors.

BTW, Is there any easy way to keep the system from trying to start CIQ after having removed it?

Think one thing: Regardless of OS companies want to know your steps by any means necessary. It is a shame that instead of asking people companies have to secretly steal personal information.

They are. The pics are in the galaxy nexus general forums. This killed my dream of getting a Nexus phone...... Will the international version work on Sprint???

I think what he meant is that those apps aren't put there until after the rom is installed, meaning Verizon put them there.
You make your statement with such certainty, yet provide nothing to back it up - why are you so sure?

The pics show it...... ICS has a built in uninstaller/disable feature...... There is no option to uninstall or delete.... Only disable... Meaning its cooked into the rom(if I've learned correctly) which also means all updates have to go through Verizon. No bueno for a Nexus phone....

As long as Google pushed the update with a data backup, it shouldn't be an issue, correct? Google would update everything except carrier apps. Carrier could update them like the way Sprint updated Sprint Navigation to Telenav or some other delivery method.

I think that only means that the app is installed into the system app directory, instead of the user app dir. I suppose I will have to adb push an apk into my system app folder to confirm, but I'm fairly certain that the lack of an uninstall button is because android never gives that option for system apps...

Also i dont think this really matters. The two apps included are something verizon users may want. Looking at your status with the company and backing up information with the carrier hardly seem like bloat apps to me. Also, this is only the case for verizon and not other carriers like sprint, which can uninstall bloatware apps. I still believe google will be pushing out their own updates.

I'm a little curious why this would discourage anyone here from owning this phone. Are any of you guys buying it with the intention of running stock?

Even if people plan on using cooked roms they still want google to push the updates because that means they would come quicker and therefore the developers would have new versions to create new roms off of.

The Verizon customers that don't want them are almost certainly going to know at least enough to be able to remove them, but many of the users that would want them would also fall into that special category of users that know just the bare minimum to be able to use the phone - average users, the ones even XDA noobs can run circles around. They make up the majority of Verizon's customer base, so the big V will cater to them. (They're also a lot more likely to pay for things that can be had for free, because they're a lot less likely to know that those things can be free... it's a two-fold win for any service provider)

I think this is the logic:
When a phone gets major customization from a carrier such as Sense or Touchwiz, it complicates the updates and delays updates due to additional testing and debugging needed on these customized ROMS. People are assuming that is the reason why US carriers get updates so much later than the much more plain European versions. So, the OP assumes that adding two Verizon apps is somehow as complex a modification as adding Touchwiz, therefor it will delay the release of jellybean, or whatever the next version will be called.
Seems pretty silly to me.

That's pretty f**ked up. This logs keys as they are pressed, even in dialer. It doesn't appear to be installed on all android builds, seems to be carrier dependant.
I ran TrevE_Logging_TestApp_v7 to check for CIQ on my SGHT959 stock froyo.uvka6 rooted (Tmobile USA) and it came back clean, no CIQ found.
It would be good to post a list of which carriers/phone manufacturers are utilizing this rootkit so they can be avoided.
Anyway I think the only ones affected would be users of stock roms like me, CM7/MIUI and other custom roms should be fine.

I found it on my T-Mobile SGS2.... :/ I killed it with Titanium backup and rebooted. So far so good. I backed it up just in case it does mess up the phone by removing it.

From my research the only way to tell if your phone has icq is to run log cat on your phone. Also just uninstalling the visible program didn't stop the program. I have found that asop and Muiu roms do not have ciq installed and only custom roms or kernels (in sgs2 case) which specifically removes listed as it removed.
I talked to a customer rep @ T-Mobile and she had no idea what I was talking about when I asked about ciq.
Can't wait for the class action law suit against ciq and see if this company can survive especially after eckhart's new video showing the program logging everything.

It depends on which rom you are using. If you are using CM7/MIUI they don't have CIQ because they are based on open source android builds. CIQ is added by carriers and some phone manufacturers so if you are running stock rom or hacked rom based on a stock rom there is a good chance you have CIQ.
You need to download TrevE's Logging Test App to check for CIQ:

There's different versions, try them until you find one that works for your phone. This will tell you if CIQ is found. To remove it you need to pay 99 cents for pro version of app and your phone needs to be rooted.

IMHO CIQ would probably be useful software if
A) Subcribers voluntarily participated
B) The software can easily be removed
As it stands this is classified as a rootkit because it is carefully hidden with no way for an average person to remove or disable it.
