Hola Guys...can somebody list some reasons to own a XOOM tablet if you already own a laptop(macbook pro)? Everyday im drooling more and more for this tablet...but I don't see a very good reason to own one if somebody have a laptop thats in very good condition...
Well.. if you didn't already figure this one out yourself, here is a list from the top of my head:
With a laptop:
1) You can't hold a laptop with the lid open in one hand and use it (for a long period)
2) You can't remove the keyboard from the screen if all you want to do is read/watch movies (it's stuck there forever)
3) You can't use the screen to navigate (you need the touchpad or "joyknob" or mouse)
4) You don't have a camera on the back to snap pictures
5) You usually have to carry an extra bag/backpack (charger, cables, mouse, ..)
With a tablet:
1) You can't read/write DVD's
2) You can't use it for high CPU/memory intensive tasks (coding, video editing, 3D raytracing,etc.)
Most people can perfectly combine a tablet and a laptop for their tasks: a laptop for coding/video-editing/burning, and a tablet for email, ebooks, twitter/fb, movies, music, (video)chatting, pictures and browsing.
The biggest one for me would have to be: you can't connect an external hard drive to a tablet.
I have all my videos on my 1tb 2.5"...
I'm planning on selling my laptop- probably wont get much for it, but keeping it seems redundant.

magicdroid's list hits all the major pros and cons. For me, the major incentive is instant-on for web browsing and a few other apps.
asianxtreme - most of us just have a decent size SD card and rotate shows/movies.
OP - the one catch to all the arguments in favor of a tablet would be having the latest Macbook Air. It has instant-on and amazing battery life. I'm no Apple fan, but having one of those would easily convince me to ditch almost any tablet, as it is extremely thin and light. Of course, the pricetag is pretty unfriendly.
Dont you already have an incredible/fascinate?

You'd really want to stream anyway. Local storage is starting to phase out in a way. Everything is in the cloud or at least stored on a home media server/desktop.
SMB is used for accessing public shares... and the apps for running them from an SMB are getting better.
For me, why I want a tablet?
1. Battery life
2. Instant on (no need to wait for booting!)
3. Easy to carry and hold
4. Touch screen friendly (I hate mouse)
That's all the points, bottom line, it is for most of daily tasks and entertainments:
- Web browsing, email, movies, photo viewer, reading?, facebook, games ...
If I need heavy duty tasks like photo / video editing, coding then I will sit in front of my desktop computer.
Otherwise, just lay down in the couch or bed with the tablet!
Fast, easy and simple
For me I had purchased a G73 asus laptop, which is way to heavy for daily carry. So a tablet will be something i will use for class and entertainment purposes when i'm out and about. the laptop will remain in the house and only be carried out when I need to do some extensive work on it for class.
I decided to get a tablet when I had a crappy delivery job for 3 days and needed to enter delivery information into a google spreadsheet while driving. I tried it unsuccesfully with a 17" Toshiba X205-S9349 laptop... it was marketed as a gaming laptop so it's not a perfect example. It is BARELY a laptop as heavy as it is. It's heavier in a laptop bag then my kindle, evo, thumb drives, pens, cables, evo, and a viewsonic g-tablet in my messenger bag.
I also say DON'T SELL YOUR LAPTOP. Unless you are on a right budget, it's better to have backup devices because things break. My parents talked me out of selling my laptop and it has saved my ass on numerous occasions. Be a true geek and have a device for every occasion. Your tablet will be your everyday mobile device that can do pretty much all of what you could need on the go. It can read/edit documents... record audio(actually I'm unsure about this and can't find an answer, did they forget to put a mic on this thing?), pictures, video. It offers you full internet, which is a big deal because you can do most anything with web apps these days. Think Star Trek, or Stargate Atlantis, or any other sci-fi where they use a tablet. I really do think one day laptops will be obsolete.
We will simply have tablets with docking stations. I mean think about how capable your phone is. My HTC EVO does EVERYTHING I need on the go, except that it is too small for some things and a touch slow on some. The difference between a 4.3" EVO and a 10.1" Xoom is not just a superior UI.. its 450% increased screen area.
Stargate Atlantis is why I'm getting a tablet, it's the future.
There is no easy way to mane anything because in actuality eventhough tablets are pretty cool they have not got far enough yet to replace a laptop yet....Don't get me wrong they are close all they really need to do is make it so u can collect external hard drives and cd/dvd drives.

It's been reported that Laptops only just overtook the desktop last year. I dont think true tablets will ever support external devices like hard-drives or cd-drives. It's not the direction of technology. Yes, we need them now, but we wont in 5 years. solid state drives will hit the TB range by then if not sooner. Also, most of our pictures will be on the cloud, videos will be streamed from your home media server or you'll buy (own) the rights to stream shows/movies from the web instead of having subscriptions (think eBooks, but with movies).
Tablets will overtake laptops, but we'll still have need for docking stations, for real work, for at least another 10 years.
I think I could almost get away with using a tablet as my primary work device.
I already use Google Docs as my word processor, so no problems there.
For coding, the only thing I need is a terminal and an SSH client, since most of the stuff I do is remote using Vim.
Of course, I do need some sort of physical keyboard, when I'm doing heavy-duty stuff, so I'm hoping that something like this...

You can use any Bluetooth keyboard with the Xoom. The tablet only has to support (HID) protocol. Actually, if you go over to the MOTO website, there's a docking station as well as MOTO keyboards.

Yes, but I'm more interested in a solution that includes a keyboard embedded in a case. To me, it just seems more convenient than having to carry around a cradle and keyboard with my tablet.

I hear that Google VoiceSearch v12.6 will have full speech recognition that will make keyboards and mice obsolete!
It reminds me of Star Trek IV where Scotty tries to interact with a Mac by talking to it.

If you want a keyboard in a case.. buy a laptop
In all seriousness I do find that a little silly, though I can understand the logic and utility of such a thing. Carrying it all the time like that though, which it sounds like you want to do is well and truly a laptop. A keyboard that is dockable would be good.. but I still think a seperate keyboard is fine.. and just prop the tablet up in a folio case.

I already have a laptop, and it's perfectly fine for many tasks, but it lacks a lot of tools that I would get with a tablet. I would much rather bring my laptop to a coffee shop, but when I'm traveling, I like to do some light work, and a tablet (GPS, Verizon data, e-reader) makes for a friendlier traveling companion than a laptop. If I had a tablet with a keyboard, I could have most of my tools in a single package. Without a physical keyboard, I'd have to bring my laptop along for the ride, and I'd really rather not have to bring two larger devices every time I travel.
Truth be told, there's nothing I would love more than a tablet that let me make voice calls via a bluetooth headset. With that, I'd even dump my phone.

For my sake, may I ask what tools the tablet has that your laptop lacks. I don't say that as a challenge, but rather I am seeking ways to use the device that I am not aware of yet.

The problem with this is we are starting to see the beginning of the end of unlimited data plans. So if we have to stream everything, that will come with more data use and cost.
So a tablet won't be able to access an external hard drive? Even with an app like like Astro?
I didn't think it would be possible, but I think it would be cool to have access to an external dvd/cd/blu ray burner with plug and use/play technology.
If these 2 things were possible, people could really ditch their laptops and netbooks for the tablets. Netbooks had the possibility of an external drive, which opened up the usability imo.
Seem tablets are going to be even wilder and better this year from some some of the stuff I'm seeing from CES.

To me the most important aspect would be the OS: all current operating systems are terribly limited in scope and designed with rather lax and inflexible security systems and no Linux, Haiku, Windows, Android, iOS, QNX or other OS fits really what I have in mind. There does exist a few security frameworks for Linux, but they're tacked on, not developed-for from the ground up, and they're a pain in the arse to configure.
Hardware-wise I have no specific, hard-to-implement features in mind, all the things I wish for have already been implemented in one form or another.
In other words: a near-perfect-for-my-taste tablet is still impossible to create at the moment.

Yeah... got to say I was very disappointed that Acer seems to be dropping the full sized USB on the a700. And no one else is building that into their tablet (though Asus has a USB port on the dock). I've got a batch of little USB/MicroSD holders and use them to carry sets of content when I travel (books, movies, TV shows). More convenient than popping the microSD cards in and out.
perfect? so far nothing has even hit my "minimum" requirements. so I'll put those:
Hardware side:
1. 8-10 inch, prefer 8-9 since that seems to hit the sweet spot better than the A500 size.
2. dual core at least, but I'm more focused on software.
3. HDMI out. full sized is best, but since some phones have HDMI that I'd need an adapter for anyway, I can settle for micro on a tablet. aside from making it a much more versatile streaming device, this also massively increases the potential uses of a tablet. presentations and larger scale demonstrations are made possible. gaming can be revolutionized in too many ways to count. so much more I don't want to go on about here.
4. front facing camera at least, and a good mic or it's pointless. back camera is more useful than you'd think, but not necessary. If it's there though, it should be decent, not like the iPad 2mp crap.
5. no proprietary charging connectors. So far this one's been a fail out of the gate for Acer, Asus, Samsung, Toshiba, and others I've forgotten. People wanting to put up with that flaw tend to get iPads. or if there is a prop. charger, at least also give us a second option to charge through the micro USB port like that one LG tablet.
6. certainly no proprietary data connections like on the Galaxy tabs. Seriously guys? I thought you figured this out when the EU banned these on phones. even people with iPads don't actually like having this problem, they're just willing to put up with it. not every design flaw of the iPad is a good idea to copy.
Software side (with some hardware points):
1. STOCK ANDROID. OUT OF THE BOX. Come on OEMs, people are asking you to do LESS on this one, it's not a burden on you. and they're mostly wifi only devices, so that kills most excuses. At the very least, if you want to bundle some additional apps with it for the less savvy folks, fine, just put them in the usr folder so your other customers can uninstall. everybody wins.
2. full USB support, without ANY accessories or connectors. this also means the software will NEED to support USB mass storage, not just MTP. That's a huge peeve for me, some of DONT use Windows 7, or don't want it (i.e. growing millions of Mac users) and even those that do, still have to use older computers from time to time. (XP computers at work, school, friend's/family's houses, all sorts of other real world situations that Google engineers just don't understand) not to mention backing up saves from game consoles, which I do all the time. speaking of games, we also need full USB ports for controllers, seeing as these are heavily used as game machines and the option to use game controllers allows us the best of casual and hardcore gaming worlds.
3. sd card support, preferably full sized cards on a tablet but can settle for micro SD. The most important thing is, it NEEDS to be fully functional, not read only. that defeats the purpose. It really should have the ability to install apps to it too just like with phones. especially since this is a personal computer we're talking about. My A500 is getting a little packed with apps alone, especially with the Gameloft games and other apps that are small downloads from the Market, but then you load them up and they prompt you to download the rest of the app, at 400MB. 16 gigs runs out fast, which is why I have no music or videos on my tablet.
4. Search button. on the control bar, all the time, particularly when running apps. come on Google, removing this is the most mind boggling thing you've done. not only is there WAY more than enough room to put another icon on that bar, this one is not only INCREDIBLY useful, it's actually necessary in some apps. Many don't have search icons programmed into the interface or menu, neither of which is as good or intuitive as having it present all the time, in one uniform spot, launching in app search with one tap, without having to scour the app interface to find it, IF it's even there. that bears repeating: SOME APPS DONT WORK PROPERLY WITHOUT A SEARCH BUTTON, WHICH WOULD TAKE GOOGLE NO EFFORT TO PUT ON THE CONTROL BAR. It blows my mind how many people try to defend this omission too. It's like when they released the Xoom with a card slot that didn't work, for $700, and people pretended it was no big deal. A feature that's been present and working great on all other versions of the OS, which is even easier for Google to make sure exists on this one, and it's not there.
anyway, these are my minimums like I said. other stuff would be nice, like an ir Transmitter/receiver someone mentioned. also, a case/cover that works, unlike Acer's own case. the tab slips out of that thing all the time when propping it up, despite it being designed to prop up the tab, AND it incredibly covers up the micro SD slot, even though they knew enough to let the volume keys and lock switch right next to it exposed.
Don't forget root and AdHoc WiFi out of the box.

So maybe I missed it but... were there ANY tablets announced at CES that have actual USB ports? cause that's a pretty serious hindrance, in the end. functional connectivity is what's really setting Android apart from the iPad. I honestly think it's a major reason why Android tablets aren't really taking off. all the manufacturers are trying to mimic the iPad, including its limitations. they don't seem to realize they aren't supposed to be targetin people who want iPads; they're supposed to be targeting people who dont want them.
Only new tab I know of with a USB port is the dissapointing Acer a200
And my perfecct tablet is the transformer prime (the new version not the first, glitched up model) with a USB port built in, and microusb as the charger, not through the dock.

Perfect tablet. One that noobs cannot break into, brick it by virtue of their own ignorance, then ask stupid questions later when they didn't follow instructions. And then make it worse by not following "un-bricking" instructions!
An added enhancement... A HUGE FRIGGIN GOOGLE SEARCH button. Dead center of the tab.

I have an 8gb toshiba thrive and I think I'm due for an upgrade.
I'm torn between the Asus tablet and now the Nexus 10.
I know that the N10 will be faster and have better graphics, and more RAM. But here is why I was considering the Asus. I'm a big fan of their keyboard dock., it's not only a keyboard but also add battery life and a usb port. It feels almost like having a laptop. But from what I'm hearing is that it preforms bad and I should stay away from the asus. I also have the logitech bluetooth keyboard, which I might be able to use with N10, but I don't it compares.
So my questions are:
Will the N10 have a keyboard dock like the Asus?
Also is it possible to charge the N10 with just a usb/microUSB cable?
Will I be able to view websites with flash since its android 4.2?

1. Too soon to tell...keep watching the usual sites.
2. It should charge via USB. Depending on the charger & cable you use it might charge slower.
3. If you get the flask APK & sideload it, it should still work. It is not supported or updated anymore, but it still works. I am not aware of anything under the hood that should completely break it. Depending on the sites you are going to you might need to use a different browser, such as Firefox, to view your stuff.
I'm in the market for a new 10 inch tablet. Its either between this or a Nexus 10. I'm a little weary on getting the TF300 for some of the issues I've read about. Just would like to hear if anyone has any problems with it or not, and if so, are they bearable or fixable?
Might also want to add that I'm generally very lenient when it comes to bugs..but, having a N7, I've kind of spoiled myself lol

Ive had mine since June 2012 and I've read about people with many issues but none of that for me. I unlocked it and I am running cm10.1 and I just love it.

I'm a little obsessed with buying new gadgets after around six months, so I'd really like this to last a while. Obviously it can hold against the test of time pretty well if its lasted almost a year for you lol

On the stock rom the tf300t is almost ubearable. I hardly ever used the tablet.
I recently bit the bullet unlocked installed twrp recovery and cleanrom. It runs amazingly fast and smooth now. I was shocked when I first used cleanrom, I wasn't expecting such a vast improvement. Now I use it more than my pc.
I have the keyboard dock and would recommend it to everyone even if it's just for the additional battery life. The keyboard is easy to use and works well with a wireless mouse.
White tf300t and dock, 32gb tablet, 64 gb micro sd and 1tb white portable HD & white USB card reader / usb hub.
Only issue I have had with cleanrom is my EA Games Real Racing 2 and NFSMW won't install from the market, other than that everything else is perfect.
Word of warning if you unlock and install twrp (or cmw ... twrp is recommended) NEVER do a full wipe from the Asus recovery or you'll likely end up with a brick. To avoid this I always do a reboot into recovery rather than entering recovery when the tablet is booting (Just in case I accidentally stuff up).
Keyboard dock is great for typing, not as good as a dedicated desktop keyboard but plenty good for lecture notes etc. I tend to use a wireless mouse rather than the trackpad.

If we're being honest, it would be unlocked and ROM'd by the end of the night were I to get it lol. So it handles external hard drives well?
I wasn't even aware the keyboard dock had a track pad on it. How well is the sound on it while docked/in landscape?

As far as handling external hard drives, I have had no problems transferring backups of my DVDs through the USB dongle from a 2TB NTFS HD to the tablet.
I bought a 1TB laptop drive from my local PC shop and a cheap HD enclosure from eBay .. I simply searched for a white one to match my Tablet. Yeh it handles the hard drives really well.
I have a 8 TB hard drive enclosure that has 4 x 2 TB drives ... it uses USB through 1 USB port and allows the drives to show as 1x 8 gb drive or 4 x 2 gb drives... works great on windows 7 I have it set up as 4 seperate drives. It only showed as 1 x 2TB drive on the tablet (well it was worth a shot)...only picked up the first drive in the enclosure.
I use FX Explorer with the additional add ons (I coughed up the $ for these as the app is that good) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.fx&hl=en .. I access my drives on the PC via wifi using this app (looks great on the tablet).
Sound from the speakers sound great... movies can be a bit soft, depends on how you encode them.
My son is using the tablet each day for taking notes for his programming course. He touch types and thinks the keyboard is great. The additional battery life is an added bonus
This is the first Android device that I have NOT rooted.
With the ability to DISABLE apps a standard feature in Jelly Bean, I just didn't feel like messing aroun d with it since the tab runs REALLY WELL IMO with the Stock Rom on it.
I love this thing. It's plenty fast enough, runs everything I throw at it.
Also agree the Keyboard is nice even thought I RARELY ever use mine. I keep thinking about selling it while I could still get a few bucks for it, but... I just can't quite part with it.
I have a 16GB Pad, with a 16GB card in it. In the dock I have a 32GB card. I take my SD Card from my camera and put it in the dock, and bam, there are my pics.
Not to mention when the tab gets low on battery, I will just put it on the dock for 20 minutes. It sucks the juice out of the dock and is charged again. Very nice feature.

How do you get yours running "really well"? I'm on stock as well - rather because I don't wanna unlock it before knowing, if ASUS will make nvflash possible or not - and with everyday using it the urge to flash a custom rom gets bigger.
I expect a 1,3ghz quadcore tegra to run a bit smoother and faster - but on stock rom it just doesn't really run smooth and fast...
For example: I use a app to record my bloodpressure over the day - doesn't really run that smooth on my tf300. Frankly, it runs a lot smoother on my desire hd. And I don't think a 1ghz cpu can beat a 1,3ghz quadcore
Also, the biggest disadvantage of stock rom: the microsd card is just a removable storage...if you have a lot of apps on a 16gb tf300 you'll experience insufficient storage here and there, especially when you're having games on it that require around a gb of space for their data.
As soon as I know whether the petition was successful or not I'll get rid of this lame stock rom and try clean rom

I totally agree with you. I have not had any issues at all with my tf300. I changed a few settings in developer options and disabled a few apps (stock browser for one), but other than that, I have found it runs really well on stock everything.
If possible, could someone post before and after actual usage videos of stock and then a custom rom? Or point me in that direction? I've done searches and all I get are benchmarks, which are decent to show raw performance, but I would like to see real world performance differences (such as web browsing, or games loading and running on stock and then custom) before I take the plunge of unlocking, rooting and voiding.

I can't find any comparison videos, but there's plenty custom ROM and stock videos on YouTube..maybe can try to judge from there?
Also, on my front, I found a really cheap one on amazon and am having a hard time keeping myself away from it. I reckon if there are problems with it, there's nothing the XDA community can't solve, right?

It works but you may need root for certain things although I don't think a mouse would work as it is a touch device.

Love it, far better than any Android tablet at the moment.

A lot of apps have been improved and look better than before but not all, although I haven't found any apps that look horrendous.

I find the battery is awesome, also a custom kernel/ROM can have a big impact on it.

I use the poetic slimline case, there have been some issues with it not fitting properly but mine is fine, not sure about docks/stands

I use the usb otg cable and a four port usb hub. Keyboard and mouse are just plug and play. Which is the case for all the android devices I've owned. I've been rooted since the moment I bought it so I'm not sure if you need root for thumb drives.

I personally love the device. I had a Asus Tf101 before and this is a far better product.

The apps are improving quite well and even the few non tablet apps that I use don't look horrible. Not sure if you can see the online play store in your location but if you can there is a tablet filter that can give you a better idea of the available apps.

For the most part I use my at home after work. I find that it can easily last me three days.
-Is there a good stand, dock, or case that's recommended?
I have the iblason black faux leather case and the brown suede bear motion case off of Amazon. I'm finding now this i prefer the iblason which is about 18.00 on amazon.

I personally recommend it, based on it`s specs, it`s still the best bang for the buck. But it also greatly depend on your needs from a tablet device.

Given the high resolution screen, yes some app do look blurry or pixelated if not optimized for tablet. For me, i can live with it, we will get more and more tablet optimized apps for sure.

Great battery life although below my expectations. It might be due to the device processing a high resolution panel.

unfortunately no stand or dock at the moment from google. but the cases do make it stand. Just get a case that suit your needs.

The stock unrooted firmware doesn't mount usb thumb drives when connected with OTG. The "Nexus Media Importer" app from the play store provides a smooth workaround for that, well worth the 3 or 4 USD I paid for it.

You may wish to consider an Asus TF700. For example, I have the integrated keyboard, an USB non-powered hub, a laser printer (hooked to the USB hub), Bluetooth speaker (powered by the hub), multiple USB hard storage devices (for moving large volumes of data such as movies between devices), a microhd 32 GB card (up to 128 GB possible), in addition to a regular SD card. Shortly I will add an USB ethernet adapter for additional speed when using it at my desk. All of this is with the stock configuration and is well integrated into the tablet experience. The TF700 may not be as fast as the Nexus 10- but I have found the speed very good with the optimal mix of apps. My impression is that the TF700 is a more versatile device if you need multiple storage/connectivity options ala a netbook and find the Android OS suitable for your needs.

When rooted, you can use the free StickMount app.
Some custom roms may mount USB sticks for you automatically, but I haven't experimented with this.
Dontvbe worried about software ... There are very inteligent developers outhere that work for this device . eventualy all the software problems will be resolved . be worried about the problematic hardware side and how to be able to return the product more faster process problems free .

I had problems with Stickmount (can't recall what now). I've been using 'USB OTG Helper' which is a great app. As for how phone apps look: it's not that most of them look bad; they're just not optimized to take advantage of the extra screen real estate. But I'm finding more and more of my favorite apps have a separate tablet version, or install a tablet-optimized one if a tablet is detected.
I also recommend the Moko Slim-Fit leather case (Amazon). Very well made.

The reason why I'm not considering the transformer is because it isn't running stock Android. And I'm not sure how the dev community is for it. Plus it's almost a year old and a new ones coming out soon, I don't know if I can wait.

The Asus Transformer series is comparatively minimalist with regards to Android customization versus other brands- though bloatware is an issue. There is quite a bit of 3rd party developer support. TF Android stock and custom updates have been prompt- though I am encouraged that Asus was cautious with 4.2. Of course, newer models will offer better performance- and where the need is not critical- it might be better to wait. Again, the hybrid market seems to be in rapid transition and the Transformer series is hardly the only option- for example, Windows 8 hybrids from Asus, Lenovo and others. I only made the suggestion because you focused on expandability- not a core strength of the Nexus 10. But the Nexus 10 has a lot of other strengths- though it to will probably have a faster replacement or hardware refresh soon...

Sorry for re-opening an old thread, but it seemed relevant to my situation.
Hi guys, finally decided to take the plunge and shell out for a Nexus 10. This will be my first tablet purchase, so naturally I want it to go as smoothly as possible.
Although a lot of what I've read from purchasers here seem to suggest it's anything but a smooth process with Google. I've terrified myself half to death with some of the stories here. I should probably also mention that I've never had to RMA any device before, but I'm almost fully committed to the fact that I'll have to with this, after all I've read about it.
So. What are the main problems are that people have experienced, which required RMAs and are they still present in the newer batches, seeing as it's almost 6mths old now?
I've looked around these forums for the past half week and found what I believe to be a fairly conclusive list and their possible resolutions. Is there anything else beyond this list I should be watching out for?
RMA for sure
- battery issues - less than 6hrs
- faulty usb/hdmi socket
- constant wifi drop
- speakers buzz
- no sound via hdmi
- crap stuck under screen
- loose to touch/clicky camera lens
- light bleeding (only RMA if excessive)
SOFTWARE UPDATE
- constant restarts with stock rom
BEARABLE WITH CASE
- creaky back cover
Also, is it easier to return to Google or Samsung should I need to RMA?

Damn I'm lucky. Not one problem with my nexus 7 well the wife's now that I went and got a 10. And not a problem with my 10. And I picked my 10 up from a guy on craigslist for 375 for a 32gb.

Well mine just arrived 20 minutes ago. So far none of the issues I've seen around these forums. No creaky back. No creaky camera lens. No crap under the screen. It's on charge at the moment, so I can't check the other things like light bleed etc.
Oh and for reference it's an R32D model if that helps anyone. I'm in the UK too, for anyone questioning if UK is getting new or old stock.
