Is my phone nomral? "Android OS" eats my battery - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

i have bought my GN last week, once i have got the phone, i immediately update it to KK1 (2.3.6, Hongkong version) via OTA.
i have read many posts on XDA that you guys with 2.3.6 are happy with the battery life, however, it is not the case on me.
as you can see, i have used for 5 hours after unplugging from full-charge, the battery drains from 100% to 65%, during this 5 hours, i had 10min phone call, took 2-3 pictures using build in camera, about 10 whatsapp messages
do you guys think it is reasonable?
what should i do to fix it?

Try flashing SheepRom. Battery life is good for me.

These third party ROMs all seem to have one issue or another based on what I've read in the threads. Better to just root it and remove apps and tweak yourself.

I haven't had any trouble with Sheep Rom. I think the problem with some kernels is that the phone is not entering deep sleep. You could try installing setcpu and forcing it to 200Mhz while the screen is off.

Completely agree. Wish I never screwed mine up with Odin. Wish I could get back to my stock ron and just root, but my stock ron can't be found. I'm on the Hong Kong non modified ron now and am as close to being happy as I can get without selling and really buying.
I had problems with the sheep rom not showing apps in the market that worked and showed fine on the stock rom. Yeah yeah yeah, I know there was probably a fix but I'm not willing to spend all my time fixing silly **** that wouldn't be a problem.

I had the same problem with the market this morning, I uninstalled the market updates and the apps would install again.

You should install a official rom and silly **** like that wont happen. BTW my battery sucked on that sheep rom!
Can we be done with the rom battle now?

I recommend starting with installing betterbatterystats to monitor wakelocks. That has identified my android os problems.

thanks guys for your suggestions on roms
i would prefer keep using the stock rom
will try to install betterbatterystats to monitor wakelocks, i will post the result after 1 day usage for our further investigation

Stock
I'm running stock for now, no root, and battery is pretty good. After installing juice defender ultimate, it's actually better than my GS2 battery.

rooted and using titanium to freeze a lot of the junk apps originally installed. Currently at 21 and 33 minutes with about 75% left. I never turn off wifi and have sync going all day. Browsing and a few voice calls. Not bad IMO

I would appreciate if you could you give us a list of those junk apps.

bunch to list (which I will do later) but go into running services. there should be a ton of crap (assuming your on stock) you can freeze. These are mostly stuff I would never use

Charged to 100% and left overnight...the drain was about 2% per hour...anyone can explain to me why..??...screenshots attached..

2% with wifi on is normal i think. just you off wifi then it will go < 1% /hr
You can use phone weaver to auto manage wifi. It will switch off at specific time and will switch on autometicaly at predefine time.
I manage to switch off data connection + wifi at 2am to 9am. and by bettery drain just 4% during this 7 hrs.

Hmm...but what about Android OS battery usage..its always high..??

wat is wrong with this, it showing you how much battery drained by OS. if your phone is workng then smthing shud use it na?
if your use is <1 %/hr, and that use, is with android OS mostly. it means not other than OS draining your battery.
Look to total battery draining/hr, and smthing (like ne service/application) over consuming battery, thn you have to worry for that..

And while using betterbatterystats...i saw in kernel wakelocks that vbus_present and deleted_wake_locks were on for a considerable amount of time...
Do they cause high android os use and drain battery..??

I have absolutely no battery drain, 10% lose after 1 day (with playing calls etc included), however I've applied my little solution, deleting all the suspicious system apks
Definitely no battery drain here. Auto-rotation and GPS is ON all the time, played orientation-based and 3d-intensive games multiple times, used Google Maps (just had a nice tour today here in Japan )
By the way I haven't charged yet since I installed this rom 2 days ago.
samsung finally solved it or you did not have the problem before?
same for me right now i am at 1day and 8 hours with wifi on the whole time 3 hrs of calling and texting ,few games, radio etc i always have had the battery drain in the previous roms so this one is looking good
No drain here. With one charge phone now survives two days of intense use.

I surely had it before that is why I started this infamous thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1039696
No unusual drain here.
In fact this is the best battery efficiency out of any rom (except stock 2.1) I've used. Down to 64% after 24hrs with pretty low usage, which is subjective. To put it in perspective I rarely got past 24hours with typical usage on any 2.2 rom.

Well, it depends on personal preference , but for me bloatware is software that I will never use, or use someting else instead of the preinstalled one, for exaple : layer, mini diary, write and go, thinkfree office, stock audio player, swype, stock gallery app, samsung apps, touchwiz+widgets, live wallpapers, dual clock, etc.
Of course you need root, and titanium backup to remove, or you can delete the apk`s manually with root explorer, just don`t remove crucial stuff. You can search on google, or in the forums for a list of files, that can be safely removed.

For most it is amazing.
For me it has been so-so but I am letting it drain to calibrate now. Maybe it just looks like it's so-so.

The key to good battery life on SGS 2 is

persistence (with a modicum of technical ability).
Ever since I received my SGS 2 I've been plagued with "poor" battery performance - The stock ROM that came with it wouldn't stay charged longer than 12 hours when I was doing nothing with it and barely 6 hrs when I used it. I quickly discovered that Samsung had released a newer version via KIES, updated it and it improved it, not life changing but just enough to see me through the working day.
I was also disillusioned with the stock ROM that came with the phone - too much "bloatware" that I'd never use. Found this forum and started by rooting the phone, then using CWM and Titanium Backup to make full backups before moving on to loading custom roms. Tried the 3 that seemed most popular and stable - VillainROM, LightningROM and DarkyROM.
Much preferred Lightning ROM but after I'd installed it found that battery life was abysmal to the extent that I could have the phone plugged in and charging via USB and the battery would continue to go DOWN!
After restoring back to a CWM backup I did more research and found an app that would let me know what was killing the battery (see link at end). I re-installed the Lightning ROM and found that a security application called Privacy Guard (not LBE Privacy Guard) was chewing the battery up. This now made sense as this particular app had stopped working as it should after upgrading to Lightning ROM.
Un-installing this app made a massive difference to the battery life.
During this period I did have Juice Defender installed and since rooting the phone SetCPU. I had also encountered the "issue" with SetCPU appearing to cause reboots, closedowns and had turned off the functionality. But I was trying to use setCPU under the stock ROMS not a custom rom.
Since fixing the Privacy Guard issue and performing a clean install of Lightning ROM I now have a phone which lost only 3% battery last night (almost 8 1/2 hours).
I now have Juice Defender Ultimate, SetCPU configured to on-demand between 200Mhz and 1Ghz (I raise manually when I play games needing 1.4 or 1.6Ghz), Timeriffic to turn stuff off when I don't need it.
I have also put time into either removing or freezing (using TB) apps that I won't need.
Yes when I use the phone the battery goes down but it's a powerful phone and I treat it the same as a laptop running on batteries - The more I use it the less the battery lasts, get use to it people!

If you use it correctly and know what it is doing = yes.
A solid tip is to never ever ever ever ever ever ever use any of the bloatware provided by Samsung. Don't even start it once because some stay active even if you don't use them. They drain the life out your battery and there are enough good alternatives.

It's an old one and oft repeated, but for anyone fresh to the 4378 (and counting) battery life threads, get out of Google Latitude and stay out - kills the battery
I'm wondering if you use your phone frequently all day and JD constantly renegotiating connections is it better to not use it at all
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
If you are using yout phone really frequently (data) then JD is useless, but for me it really good.
I have bad signal at work, so I have JD set to sync every hour, preferred wifi and automatic night mode when i'm asleep.
Data on when screen on and everything is fine (for me).
Is there a safe way to delete bloatware apps? I mean what if I delete something that messes up the phone? Do I need to reinstall the Rom?

It works or not is a different matter, IMO it is not needed, nothing is needed actually. Just install JD and you will see it under Wakelocks in Better Battery Stats. So it drains more than saving it.

For working and busy people, i think you guys can get better battery life than me. As a student in a holiday(nothing to do except playing ps3 and running errands), I most of the time will unlock the sgs2 whenever i glanced or watched it. moving the icons around, changing launchers, putting widgets, etc... i took so many times using sgs2 everyday and it can last about 6-7 hours with almost all the time screen on except when i sleep.
for me, 10 hours is already ok. get used to it guys. buy a spare battery, or an external charger. no need to worries at all. you dont want to be a freak for battery life. constantly checking the battery and whats draining them. its not cool~~ use it to the fullest! until the manufacturers make a phone with large battery capacity! i mean officially. those 3rd party large battery are just a show off. they drain as much as the stock ones.

Not sure - it may have dependencies with other more useful tools such as Maps. Just make sure you are logged out and keep clear of it - it's reasonably well behaved if left alone.
I have always used Stock not rooted yet and get around 13-19 hours, I don't use the samsung hubs, but have facebook, twitter, google + and three emails constantly running and use wifi browsing a lot
so am quiet happy as it is hence no need to root although I like flashing the new firmwares via ODIN
Just a brainwave??
With Titanium Backup you can freeze your unwanted apps. When the phone is working without problems you can safely remove the frozen apps (after making a backup of course)

36-38 Hours Battery Life!
I moved over from the HD2 a month ago. One of the things that astonishes me about the S2 is the battery life.
36-38 hours is the norm for me.
This is with:
- VillainRom
- Push Email (heavy use ~ 100 per day)
- No Lattitude
- No Wifi (HSDPA sufficient)
- No Bluetooth
I don't spend a lot of time making calls but being relatively new I am constantly fidgeting with it.

[Help] Battery problem

My battery is draining too fast after upgrading to android 4.3. Even only on 2g there is 1% decrease in battery almost after every 3 minutes. But with screen off it will remain almost at 99% after even 12 hours or more. But when I start using the phone for something like even navigating through the settings the battery drops 1% every 3 minutes or even less. My handset is about a month old. I am from India and running the ML4 android 4.3 recently released by Samsung. There is no wakelock when the screen is asleep. The phone screen consumes between 60 to 90% of the battery or more. I factory reset it thrice since the update but with no effect. I am running the 4.3 update for about 3 weeks now. I also installed Greenify, battery doctor, juice defender etc to save battery but there is no improvement. I installed the same apps that I installed on the 4.1.2 firmware but the battery is draining quite faster in the 4.3 version. I also freeze almost all bloatware using Titanium backup and even uninstalled some like Google Books etc. but no use. I don't use wifi or wifi hotspot at all. I rarely use bluetooth. GPS, location, etc off. I even freeze Google Play store, Google play services and Google services framework. No multi window, no smart stay, no s voice, no ripple effect, no live wallpaper, etc everything off but still the same. If there is anyone facing this issue and has already found the solution, please help me out.

This is funny! You mean to say that the upgrade to android 4.3 has damaged my battery? The battery is not even 1 month old as I mentioned in the first post. The battery is very good on android 4.1.2...... As I mentioned in the first post, there is no battery drain when the screen is off. Even after 24 hours the battery is 99% from 100% with screen off. Why should I checked for wakelocks when the battery is fine on screen off? I did checked it to be sure but no wakelocks. The battery problem is when I use the phone, the battery is draining abnormally when the phone is used. Anyway thanks for your reply.

Yes, 4.3 upgrade downgraded my battery life about 20% when I am using my phone. On idle it is better about 10-20% also compared with 4.1.2. It is useless to do factory resets or other nonsense. Just it is as is.

Okey So Firstly I rule Out Few Assumptions Made By Some Members(No Offense):
1) As thadoukuki said battery Drains only while using the phone and not wen its idle that means its not a wakelock for sure.
2)Secondly as the handset n battery ofcourse, are just a month old i dont even assume it to be damaged(Trust Sammy)
3)Thirdly 1% / 3Mins is quite normal on extensive Usage but as you say its just while navigating around settings etc. den i assume its a bit high.
4) Now betterbatterystats is good to identify what consumes your battery but ive never been a fan of that actually.
SO according to me try to do some trial n error work .
Instead of Freezing apps through TB u can use Greenify Donate to greenify system apps and user apps as well. It Does same job as TB freeze but without that extra hassle.
Secondly Choose a kernel that you think is battery friendly for you like the one which gives you peace of mind(Oh Yeah Battery's Draining Slow!!)
for me i'd go for Boeffla or Googymax
Choose a battery friendly Governer for ur CPU(For me Boeffla kernel with Archi_ultra_power_save governer gives great results)
Check if CPU Touch boost is Enabled in Kernel Settings coz Touch Boost gave me good performance and responsiveness but even i had observed that battery used to drain faster with it.
Battery friendly Rom with few Tweaks by xda members is always better for me over Stock( ArchiDroid Is the Rom ive ever Used){Personal Opinion}
Ppl Say undervolting helps .....hmm maybe ive never Done it but as you are very cautious about battery you may try it (on your own Risk)
Lets see if that Helps
And Lastly i never Observed much Change in Battery drain pattern wen Coming from 4.1.2 to 4.3 so thats not really true.

[Q] ANDROID IS JUNK! (Battery "life")

Every time I track down what is sucking my battery Google come up with a new way for Android to suck even more. I have sorted out various apps, location services, underclocking, etc. Now I find that when there is an update waiting the Play Store punishes me by sucking the juice out of the battery - even though I have it set to automatic updates and to give me notifications if there are updates waiting. No notifications and sometimes the waiting update doesn't even show up in My Apps, unless you switch to the Store Home and then back to My Apps. It might make a little bit of sense if these app updates were waiting for you to approve a change to the permissions but that isn't the case.
I have this problem on my Nexus 4 running rooted stock Android 4.4.4 AND on my waterproof Moto Defy+ running uprooted stock 2.3, so I'm guessing it is the Play Store which is junk. Does anybody know a solution to this? Please? I have tried searching for solutions but there are SO many battery/Android OS problems that I haven't been able to find the answer for this particular one.
I'm almost tempted to go for an iPhone - except that they are junk too. Maybe my next phone should be a Nokia 3310.
(BTW "junk" wasn't the word I originally used)
You're never going to get zero percent battery use, maybe your expectations are out of line?
How much screen on time do you out of a full charge? And what's your %/hour drop when the phone is sitting untouched?

Maybe my next phone should be a Nokia 3310.

google doesnt come up with a new way for android to suck more battery , YOU DO , note the keyword is YOU , now figure it out .
I was getting under 2% per hour drain then, without me making any changes, when updates came along and Android didn't tell me and Android decided to suck my battery it goes to something like 10% per hour

battery life is all dependent on YOUR personal usage, your personal setup, your personal decision to install whatever apps, and very much your phone/data signal. if your data/phone signal is only so so, then youyr battery life will only be so so. if you have things draining your battery besides for your signal and use, its up to you to figure out why. thye battery klife of my nexus 4 and nexus 5, actually, all androids that ive ever owned, has been wonderful. i get the same google apps updates as you, no less. so you have to figure it out.
OK, so as I said previously, with no changes made by Me I am finding that when app updates come along my Nexus doesn't alert me to the need to update but if I don't spot that an update is needed "Android OS" usage climbs and drains my battery until I look for an app update and update it. This is without loading any new apps and with the good signal I always have and all the things I normally have turned off (wifi, BT, location history, Google Now, etc) and slightly underclocked (1.2 GHz).
I'm sorry if criticising Android has offended people but I'm asking if anyone can help me solve yet another battery drain. Assuming that I'm doing something wrong isn't helping unless you can point me at what I'm doing wrong. All I am seeing is that I've sorted out all the known battery drains in my personal set up and yet updates, over which I have no apparent control, are causing another drain. I would like to hear from anyone who might be able to help and I apologise to anyone who is offended that I see an imperfection in the phone we have all chosen.
Thanks in anticipation.

You need to find out what's causing the battery drain. Get gsam or betterbatterystats. Without one of those you're just guessing.

App updates come along. Play Store is set to give notifications and to auto-update. Some app updates don't give notifications and "Android OS" causes a load of wakelocks until I spot that the update needs doing and do it manually. Same thing happens on my wife's stock Nexus 4. We are both in the Uk on Three network and have good signal.
I have BBS but I need to see what it says when I get this app update problem. I will post my findings when I get the info. If nobody here recognises this problem maybe I need to look at what is similar between our two Nexus 4s. I know we both have WhatsApp and, of course, all the Google apps, both on 4.4.4 but there the similarities end.

Why don't you try a ROM other than stock? I have flashed countless phones and tuned ROMs always offer better battery life. I don't understand why people go through all the effort of rooting then stick with stock ROMs. I know the general consensus is that the stock ROM (on the Nexus anyway) is one of the best, but let me tell you the general consensus is wrong. It is good, but there are much better custom ROMs.
Oh, and stock 2.3 on the Defy??? Come on man, why are you on XDA? This isn't the Carphone Warehouse helpdesk.
Try something barebones - no bloatware/small rom and choose barebones GAPPS. This will make a huge difference in battery life before you even dive in and stark tweaking further.

You're wrong. The rom will make very little difference. I constantly get far over 5 hours sot with stock rom and kernel. It's your signal quality and the apps you use and how you set then up that makes the difference

one more thing, you do not need root or to be rooted to run a custom rom or kernel. the only thing that root is need for is to change system files or to run root apps. but yea, you can get great battery life on stock.
I have been getting great battery life from the stock ROM after a few tweaks apart from this problem with updates. I have had a couple of other ROMs on this phone but went back to stock after the last couple of system updates. When I'm not having this particular battery drain then, if I leave the phone alone, I'm getting about 1%/hr battery drain. Also my wife doesn't want her Nexus "messed about with" and it helps if the two are fairly similar. Xposed is the big difference between the two.
The Defy+ is on 2.3 because I only use it when I'm out hiking and it might rain. The Defy is not easy to upgrade and 2.3 was where Android got good, so I'm OK with it, if that's all right with you.
BTW I have a degree in Electronics & Physics plus 17 years postgraduate experience in software engineering in the defence sector. So it's not that I'm not technical I just choose not to make a hobby out of keeping my phones working.

over 5hr sot with stock kernel and rom? impossible......do you even use any 3rd party app on your phone? i get tops 3,5h all stock with NO DATA at ALL, and i turn off sync/wifi when i dont use the phone, with a custom kernel i get close to 5h

i see 5h sot nearly every day i use n4, so its not impossible. its a matter of your signal quality and usage. when im using LTE, i always se 5h sot. on hspa+, i see 4-4.5h sot. i have everything enabled and am a heavy user, plus have 96 apps installed. no facebook on any of my devices though. and i never ever disable data.

A stripped down ROM running only the bare minimum can greatly improve battery life! Just have a sift through some custom ROMs and you will find the ones that are tuned to do such a thing.
Also in reply to others here, the advantage of being rooted means you can remove unwanted system apps, underclock etc which if you're concerned about battery life would be quite important I would have thought.

This is what you need to do if you want to persist with the stock ROM. I personally have used betterbatterystats with success. Use this to check wakelocks as these are often the cause of mystery battery drain. There is an old but useful guide to that here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1827676

System service drain

I was convinced on the forums that my system service drain was regular until I took a look at my buddy's phone , he has a le s3 with 2 sim cards and his system service doesn't normally go past 80 mAh on a full charge . Something has to be wrong
This is a screenshot of my sot when I first got the phone
8 hours of SOT is really good. You can try installing Wakelock Detector to get a different perspective. Also, anything that uses accessibility services may harm battery life. Another thing you can do is go to settings-permissions-autolaunch and disable autolaunching of apps that don't need to be running all the time. You can see what apps are currently running in settings - app management. One last thing is that your signal strength isn't that great, so it may just be how it's supposed to be.

I'm in the same boat as you, only I'm running OmniRom. But yeah, had 8h sot, can barely make 6 now, android system is my second biggest drain, with 2+ hours of cpu usage.
I have tried and I have found that 7.1 to 8.1 do not have the best battery life.
I personally have been aopk 6.01 and been getting great battery life.
I did do a stress test I did gaming and blasting next radio 21 minutes use only 6% of battery.

I've tried everything , disabled all apps in auto launch , tried it with airplane mode on , enabled background resource control . Never go past 7 hours max screen on time . My screen brightness is usually very low throughout the day
What are all of these services ? My buddy has none of these
You are running stock I take it.
Different ROMs are going different services like you show.

Turned on battery assistance at about 80% , battery life drastically improved
This is now ridiculous
All eui is in the rom.
I have no problem with custom roms. (Omni,Aicp,Lineageos etc.)

I don't see the big deal you have 3 hours 57 minutes on screen time and 50% battery left you will get almost 8 hour screen time on that is well above average!

Went through a hard 12 hour process , finally unlocked bootloader , installed twrp and running lineage . Going to be testing battery life
I have the same problem with Eui rom. As long as the display is turned on, the system service will exploit the battery. Nobody knows that?
There are no such problems in custom roms.(Aicp, omni vs )

Flash Magisk and try Greenify4Magisk. It's gotta be some third-party app you're running, or you have a bad cellular connection. Are you getting full signal on your phone? Do you have LTE running as well?

I haven't installed many apps , just the basics like Snapchat WhatsApp Twitter and Instagram . I tried to flash magisk but that would mean uninstalling super su . I normally get around 3-4 bars but I don't use cellular data . I have Greenify but it doesn't seem to be doing much
