VZW 2.3.5 update borked my tab, can I ODIN/Heimdal over? - Galaxy Tab General

My wife carries the orginal G-Tab and we did the 2.3 update when it became available OTA. Ever since this, the thing is in a violent loop of force closing to the point that she can not really use it. The FC pop ups are out of control.
Verizon will replace the unit, but I thought that since it worked perfectly up until the 2.3.5 OTA, it has to be something that did not work according to the plan with the OTA.
We have done a factory wipe and that did not help anything.
I am set up with ODIN3 and Heimdal on this PC, so If there is a way to push back to 2.2 so that I can try the OTA again, or if I can push a clean non borked 2.3 in that would likely solve the issue and not force me to send it back for a refurb as we purchased this new and up until the OTA have had no issue.
Thank you.

Am I out of luck on getting a stock image to push?

here ya go! no need to go back to 2.2!

Yoshi, thank you very much for that link, but may I ask if there is also a non rooted version for if I needed to send the unit back to Verizon for warranty exchange? I would fear that the mighty VZW might attempt to deny warranty coverage on the device because it is rooted... As has been suggested to me over the phone from the customer support rep.

I pushed the stock image with root, but with Superoneclick V 2.2, I go to debugging mode and open the program, i do nothing else but click on Unroot. It goes through steps 1-7, then says install busybox pushfile, then it goes to installing busybox changemode and just stops.
What am I missing?

Ok, shut down both the pc and the galaxy tab, restarted both and opened up Superoneclick, clicked Unroot and it stopped at the same place.
This where I get to.

Honestly, just delete any root apparently like superuser titanium setcpu and the like if you need to return it. Think about it. These guys get HUNDREDS of rma devices a day. They aren't adbing or checking file systems for each one. They check it for water damage/physical damage then package and ship a refurbished model.

Well, for warranty they now make you ship your defective unit in first and then they ship another unit out.
If they turn mine on, within 30 seconds they will see this, assuming they are even moderately intelligent.
I am worried that setting that in kernal will have them doing back flips and voiding the warranty.
HTC Thunderbolt 4G using Tapatalk.

And the update from 2.2 that it wants to install fails as expected because it sees that the thing is rooted. Not that the update is important, but it further indicates to them that I have issues related to a non stock system.

OK, this is what has me confused. I used the files from post #7 on this thread. I loaded in Heimdal, did it twice. Wiped before and after each time.
In his post #1 he talks about applying his update.zip, but that does not exist at his link any longer, nor does he repeat that step in post #7.
So downloading and running these files does throw me back to stock-ish 2.2, but the kernal shows rooted in the about device.
Superoneclick seems helpless for me. It goes so far and dies.
Getting frustrated!

Use the instructions in this thread
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/sa...-how-flash-stock-rooted-ec02-froyo-2-2-a.html
This will bring you to stock version after dj11, and allow you to download and install verizon 2.3.5 official ota update - after flashing this version, go to settings, system updates, and you should be ready downloading update - follow on screen instructions and you will be good to go

Here is a set of heimdall files that will take you back to stock Verizon EC02 unrooted. Just unzip the file and put the appropriate files in each box. That means zimage in both kernel and recovery along with the other files in their boxes. I have used this many times and it definitely takes it back to stock.
Get the zip (EDIT: UPDATED LINK) here:

That link goes to a DL page but I can not DL it. Can you drop box it for me?
I've downloaded 8 supposedly stock non-rooted VZW Glaxy Tab heimdal packages, and every one of them leaves me rooted with Kernal version 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #3. I really want rid of this so that I do not get burned when I send it in.
What I have tried so far today to get rid of root:
Real_Stock_for_galaxy_tab
Verizon-GTab-Stock-non-root
VZW.2.3.5.Stock.Root
I also tried SuperOneClickv2.2-ShortFuse, but this freezes on my tablet about 8 or 10 steps into the Unroot process.
Anyone know how to get my Kernal to show up as stock?

I went in to your DL link with Chrome and it worked. FOr some reason... IE did not play nice with that Megashares. I'll try yours and let you know what happens.
Larry

OK, the version you provided (SCH-I800_VZW_EC02.zip) does also still show the kernal as 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #3 and it also has SuperUser in the application lists.

So, I give up. I went back to one of the ROMs that has the kernal still listed as rooted but does not have SU installed or anything that is obviously indicating root.
I will send it in, and cross my fingers. Lets hope the guys getting in warranty exchange hardware do not take the time to really look, or I am screwed, blued, and tatooed.

I see no signs of rooting on that page. Or do you mean the [email protected] part? That's normal, and shows on an unrooted device as well! I don't have a VZW (mine's a European GSM), but my Tab is 100% original and unrooted, and it shows Kernel version 2.6.35.7 [email protected] #2. For an ordinary user it's actually not that simple to see if a Tab is rooted. One sign that may show is the presence of the app SuperUser. If you've rooted your Tab with SuperOneClick, it will be present as a system application which you can't remove by ordinary means. You can tell if a ROM is UNrooted by installing an app that needs root and running it, it will complain it needs root.
So the unrooted ROM's you tried may well actually have been unrooted if all you checked is the root part in the Kernel Version!

[WARNING] Do not downgrade to 1.0xxxxx after root.

I should of published this notice sooner. This was discussed early on, but we didn't think anyone would downgrade to the buggy firmware after rooting.
We were wrong.
Newer hboots (like the one in stock, hboot version 1.04.0000) flash/check images in an way that prevents the phone from encountering a SECURITY WARNING mid flash. This is good, prevents us from bricking.
Older hboots, like the one in 1.03.605.10 (hboot version 0.95.0000) on the otherhand do not, and flashing over custom firmware with them can lead to the dreaded SECURITY WARNING. This firmware is from January 3rd, is buggy and well should not be used for any reason outside of initail root. Avoid it.
A tester helping develop a one click root encountered this today, he tried to downgrade from custom firmware.
So, do not downgrade below 1.12.605.6 without a reason, if you do understand how to recover. You most likely have no reason to be on old firmware at this point, outside of initial root.
If you have a SECURITY WARNING, don't freak.
Recovering from this error:
Until we have newer RUUs, you only have one maybe two chances to do this. Since you obviously know how to flash an RUU, I am not going to go through the
process again.
Flashing this firmware the stock (1.12.605.6) firmware will fix this error.
LINK: http://www.multiupload.com/JWLPZAS15T
However if you get a MAIN VERSION HIGHER error while flashing, you only have one choice to recover, by flashing the newer than stock (1.12.605.9) firmware.

i was trying to flash this [ROM][TH3ORYROM] SHIFTAO5P V1.2X [AOSP/CM7] Eclipse B5 Kernel (8/26/2011) but when i was trying to flash the radio, i wasnt getting any receptions and i tried all four radio listed, so my stupid self thinkin hey let me use the radio PM05IMG from the root process and see if that would work, well as soon as the bootloader started flashin the files it pop back into bootloader with the security warning, i tried the file the jcase said to use to get out of that problem but the file never open or go thru it come back saying Main Version Older file not updated.
"Main version higher" means that the firmware you're trying to flash is older than the firmware on the phone.
Have you tried both files above? If so,the next thing I would do is try and flash the mr2 ruu(1.70.605.0) it is newer than both files above,and both of the root files(downgrade and mr1 upgrade) so that one should work for you.
Afterward,you can run revolutionary to reroot and not encounter this prollem again when you flash something that you should have researched more before flashing.

Hey there Scotty i really appreciate you helping me out here, im sitting at work with my TB stuck in Bootloader, getting ready to bust out my old rooted Eris out, but ima go and try that MR2 RUU do you have a link to where i can download that. and also where you said Main Version Higher mines Said Main Version Older,
and yes i thought i did everything correctly i mean i guess since i had the rom flashed but wasnt getting any reception made me make the stupid mistakes, by the way scotty do you have a tb
i have never seen "main version older" but it means the same thing... the firmware youre trying to flash is older that what is on the phone.
you can download MR2 from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160286
just put your sd card in a cardreader to transfer and rename PG05IMG and flash in hboot. let us know how it goes.

Ok ima download it but my other prblem is that the phone doesnt charge the battery its not enough voltage to run the files, i have no other way of charging the phone i might have to buy a battery charger or somethin
only thing i know of is to use an external charger,or swap it into a good TB. if you have to,you could take it to a store and see if they will put it in a phone and charge it for you,tho i would take some care in what you tell them as to why you need to do that
i got an external charger and 3 extra generic batterys on ebay for about $30 so i wont ever ben in that situation. i dont like charging my phone during the day so i just go until it shuts off then put in a new battery.
ive heard of people hacking up usb cables to directly power the phone,but thats not something id really reccomend.
at any rate youre good to be caustious,an hboot flash is NOT a time that you want to run out of battery
take an old pair if headphones and strip them til you have only the cooper wire and connect them to the gold connector from your phone to your eris battery and that should work

Gingerbread rooted with one click...

http://www.droid-life.com/2011/08/25/droid3-1-click-easy-root-already-released/
This is a wonderful find. Easily rooted my Droid X running Gingerbread OTA 4.5.602.MB810.
Make sure you go to the originating thread sourced in the article (rootzwiki) to download the latest version (currently v7). The download link from that article goes to v5. You will also see from the source that the script works with Droid 3, Droid X, Droid X2, Cliq and Cliq 2.
Another tip I found was that each time the script restarts your phone (it does this 3 times), you must unlock the screen before it can continue.
Can anyone confirm or deny whether this roots the Droid X OTA Gingerbread?

Yep, all droid devices running GB.
Fantastic. So once rooted on OTA will the ROMs that worked on the patched version work? Or do we need to wait for new ones?
That I can't answer sorry.
Ahh alright thanks though.
I'm having an issue. Have .602 and ran this. It went all the way through and says it was successful. I even see Superuser in the application drawer, but it's never popped up for Superuser Request" for permission and no rooted app works. Root Checker says the phone is not rooted.
What am I missing?
Here's a screenshot. It says "server not running" between Part 2 and 3 and then "remount successful". Not sure what that means, but I tried it again and it said the same thing.

If one of the exploits don't go through, the whole thing fails. Server not running likely means it missed that step. You may just want to run it again.

Worked like a charm. My Droid x with gingerbread is now rooted. Now I can finally overclock it again.
Sent from my Droid X somewhere in the Bermuda Triangle.
This worked for me but not without problems.
When I ran the script, each time it rebooted the phone it would boot into the bootloader and nothing else would happen.
I read that some folks had success when they were in my situation (stuck in bootloader) I had to disconnect and reboot the phone myself manually between each of the three steps in the script that was supposed to automatically reboot the phone for me. So basically each time the script rebooted the phone into the bootloader I unplugged the usb cable, then rebooted the phone, then waited for the phone to finish booting up, then unlock the screen, and finally reconnect the usb cable. The script would see that the phone was connected again and it would continue on.
Hopefully this info helps some of you.

I was also on ota gingerbread and rooted. Because I read about users that already were rooted having problems I sbf'd back to froyo then got the official ota update from Verizon. I noticed after I rebooted after the latest official ota was installed that I still had SuperUser installed so I uninstalled SU before running this script. Aside from having to unplug the USB cable in between rebooted by the script this worked for me.

I obtained the stock 2.1/2.2 bootloader which Trae uploaded
The stock Captivate part.pit came from my device using Heimdall(Download Pit option)
Uploaded the KB2 firmware to my device with bootloaders from nerz
Performed "wipe data" in recovery mode
Exploited the root prompt at the battery charge sequence using UART and grabbed the stock, wiped dbdata/cache partitions and params.lfs partition
Created a Heimdall tar.gz package using Heimdall 1.3
Finally, I used my Heimdall One-Click *BETA* packager to generate this one-click
This procedure can be reproduced for any custom ROM in the future.

Nice work!
Trying this out now on Win7 from Pinnacle 1.2 (RFS) will let you know results. I have been waiting to try UCKB2, thanks Adam!
Just wanting to be sure before I try and brick my phone lol.
When coming down from gigglebread, we need to use the froyo bootloaders i assume.
I dont know if its from running this in windows, but the flash bootloaders check box is greyed out for me. i clicked the details box and i am able to change the true false values for the flash column.
can i assume that i need to have the bootloaders set to true as they are set to false by default? also should i just true them all?

You wont brick your device if you don't flash bootloaders. Follow the instructions. If it wont boot, then flash again with bootloaders. This is a safety feature. If your device wont boot after flashing, then check flash bootloaders and flash it again.
Thanks for the quick reply Adam. Worked like a charm. Always a god job from you.
Adam... this is EXACTLY what i've been looking for. My wifes captivate hates every rom I've tried and I wanted to get her back to stock.
THANK YOU!
Adam,
Can I use this to go back to stock from CM7?
If you see this message:
Code:
Local and device PIT files don't match and repartition wasn't specified!
then your partitions are changed and it won't work and do not try it on Windows or Mac. On Linux, you can use this to correct the repartitioning problem and flash it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17485056&postcount=23
Thanks for putting this together. I saw a need for this, but lacked the skills to completethis complicated task. Any chance of putting together an Odin package for it?
Edit
Can I dl your files and use the Odin 1 click creator to make an Odin flashable?

Hell no. Odin is closed source. It also uses closed source drivers. I don't support that at all.
You edited .. sure. If you want. I will have no part of Odin until the source is opened.

Worked well via Win 7 64bit, XP although it slowed up a bit (ran it live) and on Ubuntu 11.04. Switched back to pinnacle and all is right.

Are you sure it is not simply an EBKAC error? I have to check my wife's every couple of Weeks. Simple uninstall of crap she downloaded and used for two mins plus delete cache seems to solve the problem.

Great job adam been waiting on something to be done like this with heimdall. Its a great utility and most of all open source. I've noticed less bad flashes with heimdall also and altogether less frustration.

This package worked great on both of my Captivate phones. You and Ben have done a great job along with all others who have supported the project. It will be awesome once your able to get the re-partitioning to work properly on Mac's along with Windows.
Great work. I didn't think it would work because one click unbrick didn't recognize my phone. But I opened the file, plugged in and it detected my phone. I didn't actually flash it, but I figure if it sees my phone, it should flash with no problem.

[WIFI Only] [How-to] GT-P1010 Gingerbread Update

I know a lot of people are going to have problems updating to the latest gingerbread build.
PLEASE NOTE: This update will remove root but you can root again with CF-Root from second post.
ALSO, THIS PROCESS WILL WIPE DEVICE!
1) Put your P1010 into download mode (by holding POWER and VOL-DOWN):
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
2)I went ahead and used ODIN tool to downgrade/upgrade to the latest FROYO firmware before Gingerbread:
P1010XWKC1_OXX
(OEM Flash Guide here)
You should have the same tick marks and files loaded as in my screenshot. Be sure that the box is yellow on the right and you can initiate the firmware install by clicking 'Start'.
3) (VARIES) From there, after restart some people will experience a force close followed by a reboot loop. You will need to flash this kernel via ODIN:
P1010ZHKF1-kernel
(Flash this the same way as above but UNCHECK Re-Partition and CSC!)
4) You will then be able to boot into Froyo.
5) You will use ODIN again to install the Gingerbread update and flash just the PDA (leave CSC blank and leave Re-partition unchecked this time).
P1010XEUKPG
(Flash this the same way you flashed the Kernel in step #2)
6) After it reboots, you will have 2.3.6
7) (Optional) steps in post #2 to install CWM Recovery and Root.
I recommend installing CWM Recovery and CFRoot in the thread below:
ClockWorkMod Recovery for P1010
After you install CWM Recovery, you can do a nandroid backup and never worry about brick again! (=
Also, you can use ES Explorer to mount root and get rid of the Samsung bloatware (AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!)
For those wanting to remove the bloatware (AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!):
You can remove the bloatware with ES Explorer, there's an option to enable 'Root Explorer'. Download the latest version from the Market.
See below:
screenshots are from my Galaxy Nexus but it's the same for any Android 2.2+.
1) Go to the 'Settings' screen
2) Change home directory to '/'
3) Tick the 2 marks on the bottom
4) Browse to /system/app
5) Delete whichever app you don't want, but do it with caution (I usually move these files to /sdcard and move back if it causes any type of force close)
If you totally borked out the system in such a way that you can't boot, you can always move it back in recovery via ADB (much more complicated process but it's possible).
Also, why not do a nandroid backup before messing with deep system files?
Nice! Great topic.
Updated op! =)
this is the best christmas present so far.
edit: worked, almost. thanks ! rooted flashing Skin1980-CF-ROOT-P1010-BETA.tar .

If you followed those steps, the ROM runs stable without any FC's or reboots. I even have setCPU installed on mine.
Also, it's good to note that I'm running CF-Root kernel from the thread in 2nd post.
Plus, you could always downgrade if you run into issues. Just remember to always BACKUP YOUR DATA!
nice!

Could you attach the logcat here? or if you could send it directly to theos0o, that'll be great. he's the modder of the skype apps I pasted above.
could you also try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1153285 this works for me using froyo.
im getting excited about this.. is it really for the p1010 wifi only device? because from what i can see in this subforum is the devs working on the p1000 only. another thing, please don't tell me this is an official update. i don't think the bad sammy will update this little tab.
Depending on where you are freon yes it its the official ireland uk update and makes massive difference as well
Much better tab.

@densets, skype is working for both skype mods I posted earlier. you just need to enable 'use valid preview'. for droidrx's version, set the app to 'crop' so your video is centered.
phew.. relieved by this news, nevermind if it is not going to be released here in malaysia, at least i can still skype with my family w/o much trouble into getting the ffc to work.

hmm, if you are still in froyo, you can use ffc on skype: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1153285
just rotate the camera and try out different settings.
sorry for the newbie question, but what's the password for the 2.3.3 file from sammobile?
edit: already found it, my bad
Interestingly, I've followed the guide exactly as mentioned above (had KC1 and the HK kernel from previous flashing) and flashed the PDA for XEU 2.3 from Sammobile, and I'm now stuck in an eternal bootloop. I like the new samsung boot music though, better than the previous one
Any suggestions?
Edit: I wiped data and cache from recovery, flashed KC1 and the Kernel and it boots fine. Checked Kies to be sure and it's offering me FW upgrade to KM2. Should I accept this FW upgrade or just persevere with flashing the new 2.3 firmware?

Video TUTORIAL: How to Root your Galaxy Tab 8.9 and Install Clockwork Recovery

Hi Guys,
I made a small video tutorial on how to root the galaxy tab 8.9 (GT-P7310/P7300 ONLY) and how to install clockworkrecovery on it based on some tutorials that I came across here.
The video might be helpful to someone.

Thanks for video, it is clear and I am now more comfortable to root.
However, I have one question. Is it really necessary to install Samsung Kies? I have installed the Kies software but failed to connect to Tab. I called Samsung service center and still cannot resolve the fail connect issue (I had tried connect to different USB ports). From the video, the purpose of the kies is seems to allow to copy the root.zip file to tab. Am I right? Thanks.

As for kies, no it is required so that odin is able to detect the phone, kies installs the required drivers to send out the commands to the device so that the firmware can get flashed, it is mandatory to install it
Hope I helped

Thanks. So we have to ensure Kies work properly (able to connect Tab) in order to successfully root, else there is potential soft brick, right?

No Kies needed for drivers, just go here and download the drivers (tried them myself and they're in my guide too, no complaints so far).

Hope this thread isn't abandoned, I rooted by the video, everything went smoothly, went to play store & installed superuser. Installed fine, opened it, seemed normal. Then I figured I'd test it out by installing adfree. The popup box for permission never popped up & I get the force close or report box for superuser. Have not installed cwm recovery yet. Please help, & thank you

Thanks for getting back man. Well I put basically the same post in like 3 threads. So anyway, I ended up basically rerooting it with the tool package from one of the other threads, without using keis. It worked fine, flashed cwm recovery & already on my 3rd rom. First I flashed cm9. But am so used to that on my HTC Evo 4g. Second, flashed the aokp & galaxian soup one. This morning flashed just galaxian soup. Thanks again man.

Tab does not go n recovery mode. Black screen instead
I have read the instructions about rooting en installing CWM carefully. The movies are very clear to me.
But....when I restart the Tab with Power and volume - I get the Box with the little Android symbol and the big Android with Downloading Symbol.
I select with volume - the box with little Android and select this with the volume +
The result is that the Tab shuts off instead of going in recovery mode. What am I doing wrong. I have seen this question in some other topics of this forum but never find a good solution.
I already did a factory reset, but that did not help. I am on ANDROID 3.2
Who is willing to help. Thanks
Does this method work if i upgraded to ics via kies?
I wanted to do this with my gf's p7300 but when i choose the recovery the screen stays blank.
Why is that.?
I haven't done anything else with the tab yet only update samsung to 3.2.

No SD card option
Hi,
I just wanted to root my Galaxy Tab 8.9 but don't have the option of SD card in the Android menu. See attached files with screenshots.
On a high note... I tried to flash a custom ROM on Sunday and kinda softbricked the device. After getting it back today from the store I don't want to screw it up again...
Any ideas what I need to do?
Thank you!

Seems that you have official 4.0.4 now. You need to install CWM/TWRP before installing root zip.

Hi. Thanks for the reply. But how to Flash CWM in the original bootloader when the SD is inaccessible as in the pic? Is there a possibility to flash CWM safely through Odin? Sorry for so many newb questions ; after the softbrick I am overly cautious.
