Quick question for Note II owners, how often do you use your S-Pens?
Is it still useful after the novelty wears often? Or just something that gets left in the phone?
This is one of those long term ownership questions I'm curious about.
I had a Note 1 for a week or so (international) and sold it out of buyers remorse. I now have a Note 2 (international of course) and have used the S Pen a few times already. I've found it useful to scribble out a note while on the phone (i.e. if someone gives me their email address, etc).
I'm no artist, so we will see how useful it really is long-term. I think it's pretty neat thus far. If I never use it again, the phone is great despite this fact, but I will use it some...
Personally I love the spen on the note II it is such a huge improvement from the first. I am still learning all of the tricks and shortcuts, but so far its amazing. Only gripe is that I find myself always trying to touch the capacitive buttons with it... which im sure you know doesn't work.
All the time. Writing my text messages instead of banging my fingers against glass makes communication much more personal.

Hardly ever to be honest with you on the Note 1. Hope to get more use out of the S-Pen with the Note 2.

I bought the original Note thinking I'd never use it. I actually used it a lot, and now I still do with the Note 2! It's very useful when you're on the go, or on a phone call, or just need to write something down VERY quickly. Now on the Note 2 it's even more useful, and a million times more comfortable in the hand:
It's thicker, more ergonomic, and as soon as I take it out of the silo, it opens a memo which saves me a lot of time hehe. I love it! Fantastic pen.
I have had my Note 1 since it came out...and have used the s-pen 2 or 3 times i doubt that this will change with the Note II. But this tells you nothing, cause its different from person to person...

Yes, i use it too a lot. I like it how you can use it for browsing internet and for everything else when you want to save your fingers from bashing the glass.
I can't really draw, but i like to practice with it.

Very useful when making quick notes at work and memos at home. Online, I always use it when selecting text or putting in passwords on pages that do not allow adequate resizing. I don't use for drawings but good to know it is there if I ever need it.
In short, it is great for those "oh sh**, I don't have a pen!" moments.

Just like the speedometer of my car shows top speed of 260km/h but rarely drive at that speed, however I know that when it's needed its just there!!.
Anyway besides being a useful tool, without it any device would have been. Quite boring.
Never used it on the note 1.... used it alot already on the note 2 and love it...

I use it a lot, since I use my phone for business. I wish I could draw though, then I'd be able to produce "cool" stuff on it.

So let me see if I have this right, you're saying you take notes on your Note? Interesting...
It looks like a lot of people are using the S-Pen.
I had the original Note for a bit a while back, I gotta admit I bought it for the big screen (at the time, 1280x800 was a new precedent, only matched that year by the Galaxy Nexus). I never used it that much.
But now it seems it's gotten much better, although still not as good as the pen to paper experience Samsung advertised. Overall though, perhaps the most improved feature of the Note II over the original Note seems to be the S-Pen. By the time the Note III or Note IV comes out, it should be awesome.
Why get the note if there's no intention to use the pen? It's like owning a pickup truck and never hauling anything in the back

this is gonna be extremely useful for some people and not so much for some. but it's a freakin wacom powered stylus. how awesome is that. billion times more precise than those fat rubber tipped ones. I use to sketch on my ipad 3 with those and the S-Pen blows it away.
I'm using my S-pen all the time, it's a fantastic addition and makes the phone so much more versatile. I do everything from notation to sketching and photoediting with it and since i also own the Note 10.1 and the pens work on both devices it's great to be able to move it from one to the other and back again without having to use both pens at the same time.

I have note 1 and 10.1..when i use both s pen note 1 or 10.1 on note 2, i found it a little bit off set when taking notes or draw something compare with s pen of note 2..is it just me or others feeling the same?? :what:

Agreed, the actual hardware of the s4 isn't that Much better than the Note 2. For my uses the Note 2 is already fast as **** and with plenty 0t battery life. It strikes me that most of the desirable functions of the s4 are software based, and even then I don't think they are exciting enough to make me want to give up the s-pen. It's just too damn handy to be able to use your phone just like a pen & notepad.

Wait, i'm not so expert, but i read about the Octa that works like two separeted Quad. So the point is that S4 is not 2x much powerful, but only for the Ghz of his best Quad... Maybe I'm wrong, but I suppose that will be no problem for the feature that are not requesting the IR sensor or the umidity sensor or something similar.
This air gesture is a pretty old feature which I was using on my old Nokia, it was a 3rd party application that used the front camera to detect the motion of your hands over the screen and swipe photos or pages. Nothing new and certainly not a samsung innovation. Really disappointed as I find it too hyped up.

Btw... Am I the only one who is disappointet by the lack of HDR video?
patience guys......most of the software features on s4 are going to come to the note2..(as confirmed by the top guns at samsung)....but need to wait for the updates..4.2.2
At the first impulse, I wouldn't mind selling my Note 2 and getting an S4, mostly because I think I wouldn't miss the extra screen size (0.5" now) and I would like the decrease in chassis size/weight. Also I'd really like to have an IR emitter to be able to control the TV and other devices.
The other features are mostly software, not a big step up from what I have in the N2.
However, I think I would miss the SPen - I got really used to it and don't consider it a useless gadget anymore. It is great. Extra precision compared to any fingers and a screen that is always clean and shiny.
Plus I finally stopped thinking about battery and plugging in and charging. With the S2 I got an extended huge 2700mAh battery and even that could not compare to the Note2's battery. I now use the device fully from when I get up at 0730 till 1am and when I go to sleep it is usually still around 55% battery. I don't want to go back to a puny battery...
Note 3 will have same spec like S4 with more big screen, battery n S pen..thats for sure if following its history..

In an interview with PC Mag, Samsung VP of Portfolio Planning, Nick DiCarlo revealed that most of software features found on the Galaxy S4 will make their way to the Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note 2 via firmware updates.
Features like the S Translator, S Health, the new S Voice Drive and basically any new software that you can find in Samsung’s Galaxy S4 and isn’t dependent on the new hardware and sensors should be available to the rest of the company’s high-end devices soon.
Whoa this just blasts iphone 5 away. It looks like apple will have to keep up with their 5s.

The s4 would be good for those who have note1 and s3 below (or made the mistake of buying an iPhone 5).
The more i look at it i think it's a Note 2 mini on steroids.

I love my note 2 but I'm going to change my wife s3 to s4 which looks better in my opinion. I'll wait for note 3. I hope that size will stay pretty same just screen will be stretched like3 on s4 form 5.5 to max 6!

I use mine regularly to scratch the insides of my ears. Beats having to carry q-tips!
I use daily for typing, scrapbook, action memo and pen window. I love the pen improvements over note 2

I am now trying to use it for typing (writing). I like the browsing better with pen than fingers, actually, because I always keep the Desktop version of the pages and click with SPen is way more accurate.
I don't know, though, if I will keep doing forever. Have had the phone only for 6 days.
Samsung Slate 7 pen with erase button
Mostly I use an external S-pen from my Samsung Slate 7 win 7 tablet or the internal pen but nearly never my fingers, and not only because the pen does not smear the screen. I bought the Note 2 and 3 only for the pen support as tablet and don't have a sim inside. As phone my wife and I use a Samsung 5722 Dual-Sim cell phone which can last up to a week, to avoid beeing out of battery when we use the Note extensively.
Handwriting recognition is faster then typing and as good as my Samsung Slate 7 win 7 tablet. The erase function is supporte n Note 2 and 3, but requires the erase button on the opposite site of the pens writing tip. Thats why I have a spare pen from my Samsung Slate 7 win 7 tablet right next to my writing pen.
Besides typing and notes taking and small drawings I use it also to scratch my nose.
I take all my work meeting notes etc. on it at meetings. This is a major reason I got it. If you use a normal phone people think you are texting etc. With the pen people can see you are taking notes, setting up appointments, creating tasks, etc. Then you can do multi window and do some surfing in the top while you do all this.
I have the Note 3 and the Note 10.1. I won't own any other type of device anymore because I use the pen so much. It is a game changer for me. I think it may be a bigger thing for business and education, and not as much for everyday consumer.

Not as often as often as I'd like to.
Swype is faster than writing with the pen.
Most webpages are mobile device friendly. Meaning buttons are late enough to press with a finger. Same goes to the android OS.
It's like WinMo 5 or 6 that absolutely required you to use a pen to do regular menial tasks.

I use it 95% of the time. For anything: Writing, drawing, general control...
I'm a Wacom Intuos4 user, which I often use instead of a mouse on my laptop, so the Spen feels natural to me.
Bonus, I can eat a sandwich and still use my phone. Also, no smudges on my lovely screen when watching a film in HD

+1 to the "+1." If it weren't for S Pen/S Note I'd most likely have a LG G2. I have about 100 items in various scrapbooks, tons of S Notes, I use the pen for entering text unless I'm "moving" where I'll use the keyboard, I use it capture items from e-mail, MMS, and the web to either save or forward, and the list goes on. I've been doing this since the Note II/Note 10.1 and now have a N3 and am getting a 3G Note 10.1 2014. Samsung's said 60% of Note-series buyers use the S Pen daily. It's fantastic for productivity users and creatives.

I wish I had a bit of creativity in me or design ability eh eh I am In graphic art business but totally on prepress and IT side. My wife grabs my N3 and is sketching, drawing etc. She is an iPhone 4s user but it's like a Mickey maous in comparison with N3 and slowly I change her lol. I believe this day next year I will be with N4 and she will have my N3.

I use it to:
Take notes, mostly in meetings etc.
Occasionally I'll use the action note to set a task for myself, although without a sync, tasks are a bit lame.
Some games are better with a pen.
I find myself opening the calculator in a window quite often now, much more than I used to when you were forced full screen.

The handwriting recognition is pretty amazing. (If yours isn't working, install the Stylus Beta app). using teh stylus, click on the small stylus icon on the top left of any text input area.
Works in German too.
MyScript Calculator (from the Stylus Beta people) is an great calculator that uses handwriting recognition

today I accompanied my elderly mom to the Doctor and as he was rambling off all these Medical terms I whipped out the ole S-pen and created a Action Memo to capture the Dr's instructions.
A similar incident a few days earlier I was outside at a weekend fair...and the nurse called me with important info...I could barely hear with all the noise but put my phone on speaker, jotted down a contact name and phone number on Action Memo. Later I converted that to a contact..JUST like the commercials!
I used the s-pen a few days ago to draw my home's basement layout for some design work and square footage calculation. Very helpful when showing the flooring salesperson.
Also working on a small business adventure and the S-pen is very handy to sketch out my initial product designs thoughts.
Actually s pen is the only reason why I am using note series. I am also learning to sketch so s pen is really helping me out. Taking notes with s pen daily is also making life easier. If you look at software design structure of note 3, samsung want us to use s pen all the time.

I sign PDF docs on the fly, using Repligo Reader from the store.
I rarely used the S-pen in my Note 1. Just taking screenshots and writing notes on it, or clipping parts of screens. I didn't like the horrible handwriting recognition it had.
Note 3 on the other hand, I use the Spen regularly for Action Memo and hand writing. The hand writing recognition is brilliant in Note 3. Jotting down a date/time and converting it into an appointment. Jotting down an address then searching it on Google maps.

I own both. When I bought the Note 10.1, I was using the Note 3, which is closer in software. The writing experience is very similar, that is, it's smooth and the best writing experience available on an Android tablet. The Note 4 feels refined, it has some slight pressure improvements, but we're talking about a very solid experience to begin with. The best improvements with the Note 4 are with the refinement of the content gathering (I greatly prefer it) and the integration with Action Memo's etc. SNote and it's tie in to the OS is better on the Note 4.
The inescapable advantage of the Note 10.1 is writing space. It seems the most obvious thing in the world, but the SPen makes more sense on the tablet. It's more natural and enjoyable to use there to keep notes, sketch, etc. Despite the improvements on the Note 4, if I want to use the stylus, I want to use my tablet. It's natural there.
I'm sure opinions will vary, but if you want to keep written notes, this is the best tablet in this range of price. It has an amazing screen with great color. I've used a multitude of tablets, including iPads, etc. and this is my favorite. I'm not completely satisfied with the Android tablet experience all the time, but it's a fantastic device for my needs. Yes, it's worth it.

Some insight, Spen core functionality is the pen been detected on hover and on the screen precisely, and detection the button press. Everything from gestures to Samsung apps and multiwindow multitast functionality are Touchwiz features and not Spen's.
This said, i want to know a little bit more if you will.
Are the pressure sensitivity and pen tilting detection really noticeable; are they worth it?
I also wanted to know which parts changed to update those core functionality. To do some kind of diagnosis on what changed to see if we can get some of those goodies please answer:
Are the note 102014 pen and the note 4 pens interchangable?
If you use the Note 102014 pen on the note 4 do you feel it works witht the same quality? do pen tilting and preassure sensitivity work?
If you use the Note 4 pen on the note 10 does it maintains the pressure sensitivity levels and the tilting function?
Thanks in advance. To explain myself there are 3 things that could have change for the update; the device hardware, the device software and the pen hardware. If the device hardware stayed the same there is a possibility for us to have a great update from changing the pen, updating the software, or both for a better experience on our tablet; if not, sadly there is only buying the next galaxy note 10.
I have both, I use my note 4 pen almost exclusively with the tablet now. It's more sensitive and has better angle accuracy

Thank you. So the pen is the one that makes the improvement, that is great news for everyone who want an improved experience but don't want to upgrade device anytime soon.

I wish it would be that way, but i think the display is also important or the wacom chip in the device itself. Correct me if i am wrong.
Not the case if you read joey121215's post few messages above.

The thing is that there is not much, from what i know, of the wacom digitizer. It is supposed to be a plate behind the screen that creates an electromagnetic field over the screen; this induces power to the pen and at the same time detects it on an XY plane very precisly. The pen at the same time sends information regarding the pressure been applied to the pen tip and if the button is pressed.
With this in mind i can not think of any substancial change on that component that would create the magnetic field differently and thus rendering the technologies(note 4 and note 10 pens) not compatible. These changes must be only on the pen to send more usefull information and of that reciever to be able to recieve that information. The interpretation of that information is up to the drivers. So if the reciever can indeed manage to recieve this plus information we would only need a driver update(if it is not already installed) and a pen that sens the pen tilting information and more preassure sentisivity information too.
I could be completely wrong with my theory so please correct me and let me learn more from the topic.
The pen of the note 10.1 doesnt report distance from screen, angle or tilt. If the new spen reports that that would be great! I'm not sure if the wacom digititzer in the 10.1 actually supports all this data.

Shouldn't be too hard to test for a note 4 and 10.1 2014 owner. ArtRage sports angle support on the note 4. Can an owner of both devices side load and see if the pencil tool widens when they draw tilted with the note4 pen?
The stylus is passive, it's the digitiser that brings the extra features. I have both devices and the styluses are interchangeable but using the Note 4 stylus on the Note 10.1 doesn't make any difference whatsoever.

Thanks for the information. Not necessarily true but what @Sess says can be important. The information transfer not only depends on the tablet digitizer and the drivers(which we may be missing here), it also depends on the app and whether it uses this information or not. On what app did you try?

Lecture Notes, so the same app on both devices.
Lecture notes does not use the vector value angle function in the api. Try artrage, its free for note 4 owners and you can sideload it to you 10.1. The apk has also been dumped in this forum. Looking ft orward to a hopefully positive result.

I attached a quick and dirty testing app for the stylus. It reports coordinates, distance, pressure, tilt and a few other things. The one thing to look out for is "tilt". For me this value stays 0 all the time. Apparently the digititzer also reports the distance to the screen, this value seems to be really inaccurate, it varies from 2 to 7 when touching the screen.
Is that on the note 4 or 10.1? And with which stylus?
I have a note 10.1 with the default stylus. The app just shows the information that the android system reports, so you can see what the stylus supports.

It doesn't looks inaccurate, i see values between 2 and 3 when touching the screen; remember that it represents the distance from the digitizer under the screen and not directly the distance from the crystal.
The tilt value should only appear when using a galaxy note 4 spen or something similar(A pen that has the hardware to sen that information), but if you coded the app and were able to access that information, even if it is null for now, it seems that we got, at least, the drivers to receive that information. Cross your fingers to have the hardware to actually receive that info and we will be able to have a magnific update to our tabs by only updating pen. Too sad i orderd an amazon pen that most probably only supports 1024 pressures and no tilt.
If you coded the app, add this lines to make it fullscreen as in immersive mode:

For me distance varies if I press harder and also when I move the pen faster on the screen. The android api doesn't give me any information on the features supported by the stylus. That it reports 0 means nothing special. If you run it on a phone that doesn't even have a stylus it will still report 0.

Well, I have always disliked threads about opinions but so it is... I have been a note user for 4 years, but my wife has just broken her note 2 Lte (one of my previous notes) and I have just given her my still fairly recent note 4 (15 months old).
So I have just moved to a S7 Edge, since note 5 in not available in Italy with my phone carrier and the S7 Edge actually costed me only 139 Euros plus 5 Euro per month for 30 months.
I will not speak about its technical features, since it's obviously newer than my note 4 and it must be better in that area: I was interested in comparing the spen features with their counterpart 'fingers only' sported by the S7 Edge and I have found that they are not so bad.
So, let me make a comparison and share your opinions. Consider that I post this thread here mainly because I suppose that most of you like the spen features so as I do and that's why I am interested in your opinions and feedback.
So. let's go:
- spen air view and air scroll - missing but, to be true, that's a feature I don't need that much. The S4 used to support that features through fingers and they were removed later on;
- Snote: downloadable through galaxy apps and pretty usable.... It synced with my old notes flawlessly;
- screenshot: palm swipe, home and power button and also google now on tap... No problem for simple screenshots. You can even make a scroll screen capture and crop the image with two little buttons placed on the bottom of the page! I just miss the ability to crop the image with the spen "by hand" that is not square or rectangular only. So the features are there in the s7 edge too let's say 85%
- scrapbook; it's there too, just downloadable through galaxy apps and pretty usable as well!
- aircommand: it's missing but well, screen write is replaced by "screenshot and then edit" and by the features I have just spoken about;
- screen off memo: missing and I miss it myself. It can be replaced by the one made by Xperiacle, but it can't by triggered in any way when screen is off;
- action memo: one of the most poorly designed features by Samsung in my opinion. I have never been able to jot down an entire e-mail address in such a small screen, but that's missing, if any of you actually misses it (much more usable on a tablet);
- handwriting recognition in keyboard: missing, but can be replaced by google handwriting keyboard which is not that bad. Anyway, I don't use that feature so much.
So, I still miss the spen and sometimes I look for it with my hands when I want to browse a webpage or click some little area of the screen, but most spen features do have their counterpart 'fingers only'.
Well, I feel that the note days might be gone, at least for a mass market, and note series could be confined into an even smaller niche even for power users and for people who use their phone mainly for work purposes so as I do.
I expect someone will say:"Hey bro, but the note has a wacom digitizer!". Well, it's true, but do you actually use the spen for professional painting and exploit its sensitivity to different pressure levels? With such a small screen and such a short spen? I don't, but that's my experience.
So, if I had never owned a note before, I would say the s7 Edge is perfect, but I actually owned some note phones so.....

I think one of the main reasons why people bought their Note's in the first place, was the screen size. The second being the S-Pen.
Now that (some) phones are getting bigger, they don't really need to buy a Note, unless they want to use the pen.
For me, the advantage of the new Note over the S7 Edge, would be USB Type C and whatever the increase in battery would be.
I can live without the S-Pen and I've no interest in phone cameras. I use a proper camera.
The advantage of the S8 Edge over the new Note, for me, would be BT 5. The disadvantages might be the removal of the headphone jack.

The other improvements you mentioned could be obviously applied to any kind of phone.
Nevertheless, when Apple developed their first big iPhone, people said it was just a bigger iPhone and not a real phablet, while I feel the Ui of the s7 edge does make it a real phablet.
