Is Gorilla Glass The Only Tough Ape In The Mobile Jungle?
Samsung Galaxy Nexus uses some type of "fortified glass", after all
Gorilla glass was developed by Corning but the patent has run out so now anyone can make it. Details
Samsung has a joint venture with Corning. samsungcorning
Do you think they are going to save money and use cheap glass when they are in the business of making toughened glass for LCD's etc?
The screen seems fine to me.
I 've been keeping it in my pocket for 2 weeks now, sometimes with keys and coins, not a scratch yet.
I don't anticipate any differences to other screens with fortified glass and won't be using a screen protector.

there is not a single official source that can confirm GNote is not Gorilla anyway.. apart from blogs and tech websites and some say (and confirm) it is Gorilla and some say its not and non of them state why and where is the source.. if anyone has a reputed source then share

Interesting! Thanks for posting

Personally I don't think it had branded GG, but does have something very similar/equivalent.

A screen protector is cheap.
I've never really babied products before, but I'm going to make an effort with the Note.

They didn't have LED notification in the other flagship models prior to the note.
After seeing the screen, i have no issues with the usage of pentile grid over RGB at this resolution. It's sharper than my SGS2 with a larger screen

The screen is a fingerprint magnet !

Is it just me? The screen is just a fingerprint magnet, even a slight use will have fingerprints all over, looks so bad, need to constantly clean up the screen. And same goes for the rear of the tab as well. How you guys manage with this problem?
Just wipe the screen here and than... Its glass what do you expect? Even iPad has this problem, although you don't see this at the beginning due to Apple's magic and wizardry messing up with your brain and perception...

I deal with it by getting a screen protector. It's a good way to get rid of the prints as well as protect your screen from any scratches.
I also got a vinyl backing for my tab to stop the prints from showing up on there too.

Usually aren't screen protectors are even worse finger print magnets?
Can you tell more about the vinyl backing?
The samsung galaxy tablet has a fingerprint resistant coating. If you think this is bad you should try any of the other tablets. They get so smudgy you cant even see through the screens.
The google i/o tab does not have ths coating. The only other tablet i know of that has it is the ipad.
Putting a screen protector over a fingerprint resistant screen is a huge waste of technology in my opinion. Not only are you ruining the screens ability to prevent smudging, but you are also affecting the display quality.

Yes, the screen does get a tad messy. A bit more than my iPads, definitely. However, I can't really notice the smudges unless the screen is completely off, so it doesn't bother me much.
Yeah, you notice it with the screen off but not when it's in use, so it doesn't really bother me.

So your galaxy tab which has the same glass by the same manufacture with the same oleophobic coating, is getting more smudges than your apple product?

Yes, they were extra careful with the iPad orders and just did a rush job with the Samsungs coz they figured like most other stuff the Android crowd will paint it on themselves if its not included by the manufacturer / Google.

No, but you made me feel hungry now.
the tab 10.1, and the ipad2 do not have the same glass or the same oleophobic coating, and definitely not by the same manufacturer either.
tab 10.1 uses gorilla glass by corning, with their own type of smudge 'resistant' coating.
Par for the course with touchscreens. If it is a huge bother you can get an anti-glare screen protector but those mute the colors and I really dislike them (and screen protectors in general).
I wash my hands a lot more often since owning touch screen devices.

Lol, lousy 581st post. Apple was NOT the first to start using Gorilla Glass with the iPhone 4. The Droid/Milestone used it starting in 2009, and the SGS launched with it months before the iPhone 4 release.
Apple stopped using Corning's product when they launched the iPad. The glass they use has similar properties, but is cheaper for Apple.
And the oleophobic coating they use has always been of their own design, not something that is inherent with Gorilla Glass.

The answer is *NO*.
http://www.corninggorillaglass.com/products-with-gorilla/full-products-list
Galaxy Note and Galaxy Nexus does not have Gorilla Glass. Full list above.
DISCLAIMER: Next statement is not my own research, just copied from another post.
Gorilla Glass was trademarked in 2008 for Corning's alkali aluminosilicate glass, their patent for such glass ran out some 20 years ago, anyone can make as much alkali aluminosilicate glass as they want without having to pay Corning for a name, Apple uses alkali aluminosilicate glass in the iPhone not Gorilla Glass. Using a non-name version isn't what makes them fail drop tests, since alkali aluminosilicate glass isn't shatterproof by whatever you call it but due to the design of the phone itself, alkali aluminosilicate glass is just more scratch resistant and a bit more bendable.
Also note that Corning has collaboration with Samsung for manufacturing of glass:

Right. But question remains why would Samsung not mention it if it's there? Samsung mentioned previously when they used Gorilla glass in their devices.
I'm really curious if the GNote has Gorilla Glass, I wanted it to be my first device that I didn't have to apply a screen protector to! Strange how there's no official word from Samsung to confirm whether GGlass is included or not.
So, regardless of gorilla glass, is anyone using a screen protector?

Personally I dislike screen protectors. One thing that's really good about the Note screen is how it just does not pick up finger marks. It's amazingly resistant to prints. Better than any device I've used in the past. Maybe if you text after munching through a KFC family bucket it might show something... I doubt if a screen protector would have as a good a resistance. My preference is to just use the official flip cover.

Eagerly awaiting for an official statement or reply to you, stating whether that the Note does indeed haven't got a Gorilla or equivalently strong enough front glass.
NO
I have the streak (for sale) and the S.G.Note,
only the streak has the real Corning gorilla glass, the difference is evident:
you can knock your fingernail against the glass: TOC TOC vs TAC TAC (no tic-tic but neither toc-toc as real and powerfull gorilla glass )

Screen scratched!

So I've had my phone for a few days now, haven't received my case/screen protector yet..

sorry if you interpreted my response as an insult, it wasnt meant like that.
but basically, from my experience with cars and computer parts... who cares what branding it has? who cares if its branded as gorilla glass or branded as hardened glass? if its still tough enough to be scratch resistant and still does the job, then does it really matter whether its branded or not?
my galaxy note screen has no scratches on it. i kept it in the same pocket as my keys as well until i got my flip cover a week ago. still no scratches. this was before my screen protectors arrived.
The scratches are tiny but clearly visible. Considering I haven't haven't abused it all and my old inspire 4g had no scratches and was abused I think this glass isn't as good and isn't gorilla at all.

There is a fundamental difference between 'scratch proof' and 'scratch immune'
As posted by few others
1. Gorilla Glass can get scratches
2. Corning's patent ran out on gorilla glass quite some time ago and just about anyone capable of making one can make one
3. Corning and Samsung has a joint venture together that specializes this under scp.samsung.com and may not be using "Gorilla Glass" label

The Samsung Focus Flash JUST came out and it's on there.
But whatever. Gorilla Glass isn't the end all be all. A grain of sand and it scratches like any 'ol screen.
Just be careful and your screen should be good, regardless of what type it is.

The Samsung Galaxy note HAS GORILLA GLASS

This has been confirmed by dozens of XDA members who have gone above and beyond to confirm that it is indeed Gorilla Glass in the Note.
Ever since the release date, the feud over Gorilla Glass began and it ended a week later. Dozens of members contacted Corning and they said that many devices with gorilla glass are not shown in their list.
®That was for all you going "CORNING SAYZ DA NOTE HAZ NO GORILLA GLAZS"
I have read numerous threads where users have contacted Samsung and have reached the conclusion that it is indeed gorilla glass in our notes. On pretty much all the tech sites, they all list the Note as having Gorilla Glass.
Gorilla glass is Scratch-"resistant" not Scratch "proof" and even if it was Scratch proof, it would not be impervious to everything.
Gorilla Glass isn't magic, it is Glass and like any other Glass, sand can scratch it because Glass is just super heated sand.
Now, to those saying "GORILLA GLAZS IS DESIGNED TO B3 scrATCH PROOF"
Gorilla glass was created in the hopes of reducing shock from falls, to preserve the glass, while also giving adequate scratch resistance.
Hopefully, this will encourage people to spend the $20 on a decent screen protector to protect the $260 screen+ digitizer on their Note.

Jesus, therz some stubbornly persistent ppl.
Corning had a patent for making GORILLA GLASS. It doesn't anymore. Once the patent expires, big companies usually start manufacturing their own version of the ex-patented product. it's cheaper and most of the times better, cuz it fits their exact needs. Moreover, sammy and corning play together for quite a while now.
So, NO, the Note doesn't have GORILLA glass but it does have a glass that is the same or better.
chrz and let's hope for no more threads on that sbj. starts to feel like a teen-problem forum here

I asked Samsung myself and they replyed with the answere: Yes, the galaxy note do have Corning´s gorilla glas. We´re sorry for not making this clear.
So there you have it!
Damn! I just dropped my Note on the street while walking.
5 foot drop. Scratches on the corners. Part of the plastic rim around one of the edges of the glass jumped away. Glass fortunately still fully intact. No scratches.
Phone operating as before.
Really bummed, but could've been much much worse.

I dropped it on the concrete floor 5 times now, once from a height of 1,5 m - no damage what so ever. Thank-you Samsung for choosing Gorilla Glass.
I dropped mine ~4ft onto concrete when getting out of my truck and it's practically undamaged. The plastic edge around the screen is scuffed on two corners (which I'll buff out at some point) but the screen is spotless, despite having landed face down. I've enjoyed over 2 months now of a slim, sexy, clear, case-free and screen protector-free phone.

After all the stories of scratched screens, I went ahead and got an SGP oleophobic screen protector for mine. While scratch protection may not be completely necessary, I will say that smudges are significantly reduced relative to my Galaxy Tab 10.1 with no SP. I'm actually sold on them after using this one.

Galaxy Note Definitely does have Gorilla Glass

OK, so this settles the question of Gorilla Glass on the Note.

I'll leave the screen protector for now. It's hard, shiny plastic that looks almost like glass. But after having an Galaxy S for a year and taking it to the moutains and the beach, and the screen is just perfect, I think the Note will be able to live without a screen protector too.

Yea.
I was not into screen protectors but I got one with my SGP case and it is very good.
I'm leaving it on for now
Why does it even matter if it has gorilla glass or not ?

So people can decide whether or not to throw their device against a wall or not...
Cause apparently guerilla glass= I can abuse my device to no extent.

Gorilla glass can be easily scratched as any other regular glass, well its the coating thats scratched and not the actual glass. If the phone falls face down on concrete its either gonna shatter or not doesnt matter if its regular glass or gorilla.
So how is it moot, IMHO the moot point is knowing if its gorilla or not since the same care can be given to keep the device as prestine as possible.
Finally this stupid discussion comes to an end.
As if quality devices like this wouldn't be built with scratch resistant glass...
Well... 18 months of abusing my galaxy s without a scratch (case falling apart though!) Scratch on my Note after 1 day of similar pocket use...
I've had it for almost 2 months now with no more scratches but have used the flip case and been really careful.
I might have been unlucky but just being really carefully now.
oh you are correct my friend
Until now I had 4 Smartphones with Gorilla Glass. None of them got scratched although I used no screen protectors. The Note was scratched within 3 days But thats okay. It has a huge screen and I'm using no case or something else...

Very true.
It doesn't matter to me, but apparently it matters to some.

The facts matter, and the fact is the Note has a high quality scratch resistant screen, obvious from the start.
And of course;

I couldn't agree more it would obviously come with a resistant glass. Gorilla glass is not scratch proof, it's just the truth, it's made to be shatter resistant and somewhat scratch resistant, in the end it is still glass it will scratch if it comes into contact with a hard substance. If someone expects their screen to be indestructable they're going to be disappointed.
I'm glad this is finally settled
BTW, samsung-corning product line is exactly identical to corning's product line.
