This Forum makes the kindle fire a keeper - Kindle Fire General

When I first got my kindle fire, I was not all that impressed – really disappointed with the lack of google apps, lack of the Android Market, did not like the launcher, etc. I was ready to send it back until I discovered this (and other) forums / blogs. I was just amazed at how fast the shortcomings were being knock off one by one. I was a bit scared and had a few hiccups rooting a device for the first time, but in the end I've got a device the suites my needs nicely.
I'm not interested in purchasing Amazon media, but I do buy Kindle books and 95% of all our web purchase are made at Amazon – which is most of what we buy. Perhaps I'm not using using the device as intended, but we more than make up for any subsidy Amazon has provided.

I agree this forum is a "force multiplier" (as we military folks like to say) that makes the prospect of owning a Kindle Fire much more exciting. So I'll throw my weight behind the gratitude shown by the OP. Thanks to xda and all the people that are doing all the work!

Same thoughts here. I have had a galaxy S for a year and enjoyed coming here and swapping roms constantly.
Wife bought me a kindle fire and I knew nothing about it, then saw it was droid. Ok, theres hope. She said I could open it tuesday, I said ehh, Ill wait.
I started reading up at work, started getting juiced and Thursday I opened it and had it rooted.
She already wrapped it by then
"You opened it?!"
"A little bit" as I held the Fire in my hand with a usb wire sticking out and command prompts on the pc.

My wife is lame, I put a ton of work on this device to make it a better device. All together she has spent about 30 minutes on it. Agreed with everybody else, without XDA love this device would be nothing.

Only reason I got this thing was so I could hack it.

My wife was the one that wanted one, and since I didn't have any answer for what I wanted for xmas, she said she picked up one for me.
I think she's used it once or twice.

Being the first Honeycomb Tablet - Xoom - Worth the rush

I used to be with a lot of critics largely on why Moto has to rush such a potentially great product to the market just almost for the sake of being the "first honeycomb tablet", even with "Honeycomb" is not at that time a well tested or used OS.
And now I think I got it. Despite of all these good/bad issues around Xoom, I think this move from Moto is pretty good move.
The advantage of being in the market available earlier than the rest of the pack did make a difference. Just judging from
1. the Dev's attention (Kernels coming and 44 threads in xda dev section even before Honeycomb source code is published). Look, the Dev community are group of Tech enthusiasts who are mostly early adopters. This product carried the new OS to the market, this fact alone will draw strong attention and millions apps developer, who sees Android as future OS of the tablet market , want to get it as soon as possible so that their apps will come out much earlier to the market.
2. Peripheral accessories' manufacturers' attention: If you search in Amazon or online, many case / screen protector / charger/ dock / speaker manufacturer already use Xoom to represent almost entire 10.1 inch tablet market. They did not include "Transformer" in their product name (no offense, but really to my best knowledge, nor A500)
3. Average consumers they can't remember and tell the differences of all those specs, but they only know one name: Xoom. Anecdotally, my manager, who spends life in Finance industry and has not much idea of what is different between Ram and Harddisk etc, asked my the VERY CORRECT question" Is that a Xoom?" God bless him he did not ask "is that an iPad". ^^
This is not statistical proof but rather anecdotal ones, my friends around now all know that Xoom is a contender to iPad and LOOKS COOL &FEELS SOLID.
I guess if a Tablet is drawn in the waves of tablets launching events, the tablet can't really be remembered then. Evidence being almost bestbuy staff can't tell Acer or ASUS (by the way, this two pronounce too similar to each other)
So much for my saturday night chitchat.
Xoom is a solid piece of product with both Moto's hardware and Dev's contribution =)
It was worth it to rush to be the first Honeycomb Tablet, I think.

I was pretty skeptical about this purchase but this little thing is growing on me the more I use it
I was torn between this and an actual computer but Im realizing how VERY much I use my phone.. this tab does everything my evo does and does almost all of it better. Much better.
edit- some have criticized the power button placement, I really like it. It is unique and convenient.
And the wave is starting to grow and gain momentum quietly reaching #1 bestseller and #2 Top rated tablet on Amazon - http://www.topcomputertablets.com/m...nd-2-top-rated-tablet-ranks-on-amazon/224151/

Ditto, I almost sent mine back. God knows why but it seems to have a 'breaking in period', it was uber slow and crappy, FCs here there and eveywhere when first got it. But now it's settled down, albeit still stock, for now, I absolutely love it. :-D

I was also skeptical after the first week but I'm loving my Xoom. It sits well between my notebooks and my EVO, but I find it displaces my EVO usage more than my notebook. Just like when I picked up the HTC Hero when it launched, there are issues but nothing breaking.

I believe the Xoom will have the same impact as the original Droid. People swear by the OD and my son uses mine to this day. I asked him if he wanted a new Droid X he said he wanted something sexy looking like the OD. Go figure!
Yeah I was skeptical too, my friend said I would regret it. I haven't, I know I can trust in Google at least to make the software stable. As for some of the hardware issues or problems ( HDMI, bluetooth, etc.) I don't mind it too much, I am getting a micro HDMI cable and I would probably never use it too much, I don't use a keyboard or a mouse ( that would ruin the point of this being touch screen). Still being one of the few with a Honeycomb tablet is exciting, you get to start the future of Honeycomb. I gave some advice and some feedback for the Droid Reader Tablet Edition, and when I see the update show up on the market, I downloaded it and saw that some of the advice that I have given to the dev was implemented, which is pretty cool, considering one day thousands of millions of people will be downloading it and running it, and I will know that I have helped them in a way. Sounds stupid I guess, but still just very excited to help out with software and stuff.

i have to say that the zoom is simply awesome. I played around with all the available tablets on the market for about a month and easily settled on the zoom. I love honeycomb, even though it has a few shortcomings at the moment which should get fixed up. Once Google fixes some bugs and adds some much needed features. I've been using my laptop much less now, as well as my phone (hotspot aside). I'm not going to complain much about the limitations and bugs since I know they'll get worked out, but my one big worry is if Google decides to launch its own nexus tablet this summer as well as the speed in which mobile hardware is evolving right now. Anyhow, just my 2cents
I don't think I can take another β€œis that the new ipad? ” comment at work...
The Xoom IMHO is worth every penny. When you tie in the amazing hardware with Honeycomb and then the amazing features provided by XDA devs, it is beyond any doubt worth it.
I use my Xoom everyday, and for the most part I have absolutely no regrets.
I might add, just consider the screw job Samsung did with the Galaxy Tab by not providing a Honeycomb update on a device that was barely 4 months old at the time in which Xoom RTM.

well...
In the last few days I've gone from "looks promising, glad I have two weeks to decide" to "pry this thing from my hands, I dare you.."
Still completely stock and I am blown away
Between Google Body, YouTube and some network maintenance I did today I couldn't help thinking "this is some star-trek-shiz, man"
I was thinking of buying the iPad 2 here in Oz (I do have an iPad), then decided that I had enough of the no flash support, and to be honest, got bored playing games on it.
I bought my Xoom from the US through Amazon, when I received it, I was like a little kid in a candy store! After a few days, I got bored of it. No SDcard support, no flash, no ad-hoc wifi.....then I cam across these forums....well...let's just say, I sleep with my Xoom under my pillow now. Kidding.
I'm only a newby when it comes to Android, and you can tell, it has so much potential.

Got my Kindle all boxed up for return need some advice. (Having second thoughts)

Ive had my Fire a few days now and have done a lot of modding. Ive rooted it, installed TWRP, then CM7. Then gapps, market, etc. Then I decided I wanted to go back to rooted stock so I installed the prerooted 6.2.1 along with go launcher ex to have both the Amazon launcher and a more standard android interface, and be able to switch between the two. And no matter what way I set it up there was always something that just didnt work the way I wanted.
The main issue I had was that almost all video had out of sync audio. Internet videos, netflix. And I tried several different wi-fi connections. One of which is a very solid 20 mb/s connection to my laptop. I took my mother in laws samsung galaxy 7.0, set up the exact same video using the same wi-fi just to see if it might be the connection, and the galaxy was perfect, and the Fire just enough out of sync to be irritating.
So I set up a return with Amazon, got it back to full stock, and boxed it up. But now Im having second thoughts. I know how popular it is, and it seems like it has a lot of great developers working hard on roms. So Im wondering if I should just keep it, and hope that someone makes a fully functioning ICS port that fixes all the issues that are keeping this from being my ideal android tablet. Or should I go ahead and return it and cough up another $200 and get the Samsung galaxy plus.
Anyway I figured you guys would be the best ones to ask for advice regarding this. Thanks in advance for your feedback.
If it doesnt work for you, well, it doesnt! Thats that... Get an iPad 2 (seriously). The Android tabs despite their hardware specs arent that great currently.
/not trying to start a flame war here, i own several tablets and for me the iPad works best... YMMV

I have to agree, and the 4:3 aspect ratio of the iPad is annoying.
I'm confident ICS is coming to the Fire, but if you have the money to upgrade to the Galaxy, I would probably do that. Can't really complain for $200 on the Kindle, though. Plus Samsung had played games with customers before with promising updates and not delivering. So maybe I wouldn't go with it. Moto's new 8" tablet is appealing except for the fact that its tied to Verizon.

Well if your having second thoughts, take it back. With a somewhat big purchase like that, you'd want to be 100% sure you like it. If you really want a small tablet get a cheap Asus tablet, or a small laptop that has a touch screen.
u have issues.
get what works for u, don't convince yourself to keep something u don't want. I sold my tf101 transformer too big for my taste, I don't watch videos on a 7" tab. the fire is awesome for me

Well its gone. Boxed up and at the ups store.
Gam3r 4 Life I think I am right behind you.
I have used mine since Christmas day and although its a neat gadget its really neither a good reader nor a good tablet. It kinda lacks an identity. I emailed Amazon about their lack of TTS on the reader for this unit and their reply was pretty much "sorry.. you have 30 days to return it".
I guess for $200 I will just wait and see what comes down the road, and continue using my Samsnung Infuse for this kind of stuff. It has a 4" touch screen and I dont watch alot of videos anyway so it works ok for now.
Nice try Amazon, but I think you forced this thing to market without thinking it all the wary through. Maybe the next gen will be better. Well anyway I have another couple weeks to see if I can learn to like it. But at this point, I am thinking no.
I think the expectations might be too high. You're looking for the best of both worlds, and if you want media that you don't have to rip yourself, you're not going to get it on a rooted tablet, that's been made apparent by the MPAA. Netflix only runs on Silverlight or on platforms on which you don't have full access do the device where the studio's have guaranteed control of their media.
And given the limited RAM available on the Fire, it's not surprising that running a full sized ROM like CM7 could cause video issues when streaming. Probably not enough remaining RAM to buffer the video with CM7 running, that's my guess.
*IF* you want to get CM7 and then some other method of video streaming outside of Amazon, you'll need a more capable tablet like the Galaxy 7, Galaxy Plus, or the Flyer, and you'll need to pay a lot more for it up front to get the flexibility you want.
the 4:3 aspect ratio is the best feature of the ipad...
I hate how everything is 16:9 nowadays. it's terribly inefficient.
Sent from my Kindle Fire using Tapatalk
I've always been curious about this.
My pro-Apple friends have argued the same thing, saying Apple has done tons of research and 4:3 is best for a tablet.
But 4:3 is one of the main reasons why I'd never buy an iPad. If entertainment media is one of the prime features of a tablet, why would I want a screen that has black bars on the top and bottom (effectively shrinking the screen size) whenever I'm watching hi-def widescreen video?
In general, android tablets compete on price. They are the Yugos of the tablet world compared to the Benz that Apple offers (at a Benz price, I might add)...and the fire does a heck of a job at $199. If it works for you at that price point, great...if not, well get an iPad.
I wouldn't recommend looking to replace the fire with another android tablet, however, because once rooted and sorted it really competes with the best of them.

LOL, I had a Yugo!!! I bought it from a guy that needed to pay his rent for under $500. If I remember right his name was Billy Bob, or something like that (and the name fit). The only thing he requested to keep from the car was a shifter knob that looked exactly like a bathtub water knob. My mother and I drove it til the engine gave out at about 30,000 miles. Not bad for under $500.
Funny story, that thing was such a piece if junk that the shifter knob and handle use to pop off and you could see through to the ground through the floor. So my mother would call me and say it happened again. I would have to go rig it back on just so she could drive it again. My mom was such a good sport and never got mad about it, and laughed about it with me. (RIP).
You know the saying that your first idea/answer about something is usually the right one. Well that applies here. When I first decided to get a tablet I wanted the HTC EVO View. But I didnt want to have to add a data plan to my bill so I ended up with the Nook tablet. Then the nook color, then the vizio vtab, then the Coby kyros, then the Kindle fire. Well after all that Im back to the evo view and found it on amazon for under $300. And this is a wi-fi/ 4g version, but doesn't require a data plan. So on payday thats what Im going to get. I originally had the evo 4g as my cell, and now have the evo 3d and love it. So the Evo view is basically a larger version of my phone which is exactly what I want from a tablet.

Agreed, that's why I haven't wasted my money on one.
Damn you Swype!
I've got my KFire rooted running CM7 and haven't noticed any sync problems at all with netflix or youtube. I'm completely happy with it and all these devs are busting their butts to get some pretty sweet ROM's running on here. Hopefully MIUI will be one of them. ICS will work for now once they get the audio/video issues worked out.

Thinking of returning a100 for kindle fire??

Hey everybody here's the deal I got my acer now for about 1 week I like it very much but I am saddened in the lack of development and support for It.
Plus I am very unhappy with the screen viewing angles on it and I heard the kindle does not have these issues.
As for the gps I tried it a handful of times and it doesn't really ever work or find my location so that's not a big deal to me since I heard the kindle does not have gps.
Basically all I got this tablet for is internet surfing facebook the typical things.
This is my first time using honey calm and I like it but I see I could install any type of launcher on a rooted kindle and have the same thing.
So what is everyone opinion should I get rid of this for the kindle or should I keep it and say screw the kindle what do you think?
Sent from my A100 using Tapatalk
I don't have the A100 to compare it with my KF, development wise the Devs are putting in some time and ICS is improving by the week. I would suggest finding someone with KF running ICS or CM7 to compare, as for me am very happy with mine ( ICS).
I'm a huge Ics fan boy, using it on my Nexus S right now.

support is usually a big deal for me.
but as far as features go the acer seems to have the upper hand. with bluetooth (working with no prob) cam and micro hdmi.
price doesnt seem to be an issue since you already have the acer and its a little more.
if your not happy with the way the acer is and cant find a launcher you like, try the kindle. or see if you can find someone to trade with.
i sometimes wonder what it would be like if i got a cheap tab instead of my fire.

I agree about the acer being more "feature packed", but I don't think I'll really ever use any of those features, maybe some pictures with the cam but that's about it.
Good idea with the launcher. I'll check that out..
I just hate that the kindle fire at any store is stuck in demo mode so I can't really play around like I really want to

Love mine. I bought it solely as an internet appliance and rooted it and installed CM7 two days after I got it. I, too, saw no need for GPS/BT/camera on a tablet. I have a phone (DInc; upgrading shortly, probably GNex) for all of that.

I hear ya about the demo mode at the stores, what is that. You can play around with the nook but not the fire. Its just not fair. Lol.
The only thing i might use would be the Bluetooth, and that would be for gaming with controllers, via sixaxis or the wiimote.
Not to mention you could use the keyboard attachment.

Walmart will soon be offering a $50 gift card with the purchase of the KF.
Forget trying it in the stores, buy it from there or Best Buy and and see how you feel about it.
I sent the A100 packing. I didn't like the screen resolution for one and also having to hold it at a "sweetspot" angle to get the best viewing experience. The KF's screen smokes the A100!
I didn't root it either. I just installed Go Launcher EX to get away from the stock carousel and also changed the theme to Classic For Go Launcher and also I have Dolphin Browser HD! Pretty neat for a newb to mess with and also there are plenty of alternate app stores to get APK files from to download to the KF!!
Well I got my mind made up and the tablet will be going back, along with that stupid mobile broadband card I got to get the hundred off lol.

HTC flyer vs Kindle fire

This is why I picked the kindle fire, even thought I could have bought the Flyer for pretty much the same price.
Even thought the flyer looks like a very nice machine, I bought the a kindle fire. The things that won me over are very simple but I believe fundamentally important. While the cameras are nice, I already have a galaxy note, so I didn't need them, i simply focused on the thing that I would really use. for people that have not used the kindle fire, I recommend you buy it and try it and forget the demo at the store.
The Kindle fire treats you every time you press the on key, even though the key is in an odd position. once you unlock it, you get treated to YOUR kindle, it' personal, and not just a slab. I like the amazon "skin" and find this to be a feature, not a draw back, if you want 100% android simply use your phone.... I guess since I have Gnote that may be narrow minded view. In the end, I like the amazon experience, and I can't wait for the next tablet..
with $170 spent, I don't feel as though I have a BIG investment and won't feel like a loser when the next one comes out, I'll simply give this one to a family member or friend, and buy the next one (assuming the price stays the same).
I hope this helps anyone in the position I was in last night, HTC flyer vs Fire, for ME it was the fire. I can see why you would want to go with the flyer, especially if you don't have a smart phone. If you have a smart phone, get the kindle, the new update 6.3 makes it well worth it, I LOVE the silk reader view. It's my little partner.
If you want pure android on the kindle you can just root it and install cm7 or cm9 it makes the fire a real tablet and not Amazon's half ass idea of a ereader they essentially put a Ford Shelby 500 engine in a Focus when they made the kindle, what a waste

I don't see it that way, if you want a aneroid tablet ... buy a flyer used on amazon for the same price. If you want the amazon experience the kindle is fantastic.

Why is it bad? If they let people root their devices and install other ROMs, they won't make as much money.
Sent from my One X using Tapatalk
Where's the problem? It's an Amazon device, when you buy it you know what you buy, Amazon clearly declares what you can do with it. Sure, we can always try to do something more, but we can't blame Amazon if we aren't able to root or install a custom rom. There are so many tablets on the market, maybe Kindle Fire is not the right choice for you.
However I think there aren't unrootable Android devices, it's just a matter of time...
Remember HDX had been exploited and rooted, then update overrides it, then all new comers lost the opportunity. When a little bit less developers (who didn't root last time or has 'spare time'/spare unrooted device starts to look at it again, they update again. When even lesser developers starts to look at the the next update, they update again. When the next exploit is finally found, the next morning, you know what? They update again.
You see, it's a human pathetic psychology patience torturing game they are playing, not a technical one. Forget rooting this device or even roms, move on people. You lost.
Sounds like a challenge to me. I'll put my money on the XDA team.

Agreed. Sorry to be harsh, but get your panties out of a twist, fellows. Amazon is updating their devices because they're launching new services, and if they can take the opportunity to block root attempts, then they'll take it. I find it hard to believe blocking root would be a corporate priority enough to justify its own update schedule.
In this instance, Amazon just launched their Fire TV service, and the HDX has been updated accordingly:

- I noticed that amazon has not really respect our customers by updating silently and quietly her.
- Any 1 phone maker or tablet when you want to update the device software that their customers buy, they must now inform and update the content of it.
- Customers using the money to buy the equipment rather than amazon amazon gift or loan equipment to customers should the amazon software updates without specify the content nor consulted all agree equipment updated or not this is one of not respecting its customers!!

I think what you're saying is that installing updates without user permission is disrespectful? I agree if so. Once purchased an owner is not really an owner of a Kindle fire, simply the hands that hold an amazon controlled screen. I won't be selling mine though. It is in the closet where it will stay until it is able to be rooted again as I refuse to pass it off on someone else. Since I am the tech guru of my extended family I am advising all my friends and family not to purchase the Kindle fire HDX. I knew I was taking a chance when buying the Kindle that I would not be able to root or get play store. I gambled and lost but that's what the guru does, it's in the job description. I can now steer my friends into buying a superior product from another manufacturer.

We are sorry for making a posts about the device we bought.

I also have the same opinion as you, you have to make comments like I thought. I also recommend you to friends and relatives not to buy amazon kindle fire hdx anymore because too often regarded clients, I'm also looking forward to the upcoming Nexus 8 and I would never use production equipment amazon again!!

Amazon is an interesting beast because they've so divided all their different teams that they can on the one hand be the best friend of developers (their cloud computer system) and on the other hand follow Apple right into a closed-device ecosystem. This does no seem scizophrenic to me or likely to them because their cloud services are built for developers and their devices are built for consumers.
I share in the disappointment about how difficult it is to root this device, but our community has already hashed these arguments out concerning how closed Apple's systems are and how "unfriendly" to the power user. That's why we have one of my favorite jokes: "John has enough money to buy an iPhone, but he buys an Android because he's not an asshole."
It's enough to take note that Amazon is taking Android captive in their Fire version and following in Apple's footsteps, which anyone versed in the Kindle's history and Bezo's attitude towards the device might expect. Next time, most of us will buy a real Android tablet and keep our playground, and due to the shoddy state of the Amazon Appstore and their other services, and our input, consumers may well follow. You'll know it for sure if they ever boot the Netflix app from their Appstore; that would be one straw too far for most "normal" users but might appear strategically sound to an Amazon exec as they push their Fire TV service.

You lost.

Why are you a member here again?
It was cheap for what it is, and my amazon instant looks great on it. I'd never buy a device these days assuming it will get root or the boot loader cracked.

Surely you jest? 99.95% of all tablets released in 2014 have either a bootloader bypass and root or no bootloader lock and root or an e fuse warranty bypass to the bootloader such as Knox and root. While I agree with your statement in part, you say it as if we shouldnt expect it because it isnt being done lol. It was even done on this tablets weeks after coming out. Most likely several months down the road someone will have broke the HDX again as well and this dry spell will be a distant memory. Of course I expect a tablet to be rooted, why wouldnt I? But I am also an adult who knows sometimes things don't come to fruition. I bought mine at release for $400.00 so that isn't really cheap imho but different strokes for different folks.
I'd assume they would allow us to root for the opportunity to turn the device into full android thereby eliminating the Nexus tablet.

I can understand anyone's disappointment, I'm disappointed too, but maybe it would be nice to read Amazon terms of use before buying or using a Kindle device http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=footer_cou?ie=UTF8&nodeId=508088
It's in the box, too...

Yeah, I have been able to maintain root & block each update attempt while maintaining both AMZ & Google services, but the unannounced updates definitely bug the hell out of me. You should have a choice in updates, particularly since updates often times come with bugs or other unforeseen consequences. Since I actually do use the HDX for some business, the last thing I want to find is that I lost some stock feature because they wanted to add flash cards & break root.
At any rate, the real reason I am moving on from the HDX is because I only use it as I am (was) a big consumer of Amazon services. Only now they have raised the rate of Prime membership once again. There are too many other options for shopping for physical goods, as well as media, to justify paying another increase in membership. Once my Prime member ship is expired, I will not be renewing this time & thus no longer have any need for anything Amazon.
I think eventually they will learn, just like B&N, that it doesn't earn them anything more & if anything just puts more people off. Fire TV will flop as the HDX is flopping & they will discover that they can sell more units & still retain their base by opening up to more competition. But that's not going to happen until Bezos is being advised again by the types that started the company & have moved on to their own start ups. Nope, the old guard mentality just won't work any more & while it may maintain the status quo a while longer, in the end it will cost you way more than anything you managed to cling to.

GSLEON3, I appreciate your working on the HDX root and understand your moving on from the project. This is all reasonable. I have free access to the HDX and Prime because of my work, and that won't change, so I have somewhat illegitimately incentivized patience here.
Concerning Prime membership, I thought you might be interested in this article, though I did NOT confirm that as of today the instructions are still valid. They may have expired.
Still, getting to pay the old price doesn't negate our annoyance at their recent policies.

I hope that the developers work together to root and can also unlock the bootloader!
