How many devs/users we got left? - Vibrant General

So how many people we really still have using and working on the vibrant? I'm feeling kinda lonely with my love for this phone =P seems like the vibrant is getting left in the dust allot quick then my G1, which is sad =/
Also side note, anyone else feel like with a SGS there really isn't anything good enough to upgrade to yet? Only phone I'd even consider is the original SGS2 or the sprint SGS2. And those are iffy due to crappy audio. Vibrant is the best phone I own period. Beats my nexus S in everything =P even beats out my HP touchpad easily IMO. Thoughts?

I feel you man, I'm getting bored of this phone. I will probably upgrade to the muiu phone. Since, it's battery lastes so long.

I just got the Vibrant about 2 months ago, as my wife's Motorola crapped out on her and our carrier swapped it out for the Vib. She wanted to swap with me, so I did and I have to say that once I upgraded it to a custom ROM, I actually like it a lot. It works well for me and what I want.
I think that most of the Jump-ship is because of boredom and not performance. I feel that and understand it. I have been there myself, but I like this phone and it is really easy to handle, breakdown (mean ADB by this) and there have been some really great customizations out on it.
Plus between the 16gb internal and my 32gb external, that is some serious storage for a phone. My old computer from a few years ago only had 30gb hard drive in it.
I am here and plan on staying for awhile.

I'm still here, kinda. My G2x is my main driver, but i still got my Vibrant and still build kernels when i have time. You're not alone

But this phones death is due from no updates.from tmobile. it just makes it way harder to develop for....

Go to the galaxy s2 forums ;-) .
You will find most of the great devs from many of the different forums there.
It seems as though Samsung shipped out yet another phone with outdated filmware lol....imagine that,
They are promising to send ics thru kies lmao ....I believe we have been thru this BS before

There are 3 vibrants in my home. My wife upgraded to the sensation and after a week gave it to my son and took her vibrant out of the drawer. I personally love this phone. Thanks to all the devs who still work on it. I have stockpiled my fave roms and kernels....just in case the remaining devs leave

I just got my Vibrant 2 mth ago from my fren who sold to me. Im not chasing the technology so i tink this phone is great for me. I like it a lot n planning to stay with it for a while longer cos i dont have the 2yrs contract matter. Btw cos im frm Singapore and we dont have Vibrant here so that makes my phone unique than the original SGS..lol. But i really dissapointed on Samsung on the firmware case and yeah this phone if rooted fly high. So i have to say i love my vibrant. Also thanks to all the devs here, appreciated what u guys have done for us n for staying with us making us great customs roms/kernels.

ICS for Vibrant? Looking foward to this.lol

this is a great phone and when rooted does everything i've ever wanted a phone to do. although the experience with ICS will more than likely be better I'm still content with what we have so far. there are no hardcore 3d games that have pushed the hardware to the limit so I don't see any real hardware upgrade necessary. I stopped buying games on my vibrant any way cause I wasn't finishing the ones I had bought before and realized I was wasting my money. So i'm simply using it for media apps, social apps etc. These don't really need a dual core processor with 1gig of ram. The only thing I could want is an identical ICS theme and I'd be set at least for another year on this phone even if we don't ever get ICS.

Yeah, I could maybe see myself moving over to the Nexus S simply because it's got a bigger dev community and the T-Mobile version can be found for pretty cheap, but otherwise I just can't justify moving on from the Vibrant. If I don't go for the Nexus S I'll probably ride out with this until more ICS phones come out.

Hey ECOTOX, I've been quietly learning some stuff about Android and whatnot, I wouldn't consider myself a dev, not even close to one, but I'm learning and I catch on quickly, if you need any help, or have any tips, I'm here. I love this phone, and I won't be moving on to any other phone anytime soon.

I feel the same. I just don't see a lot of end user support with the Samsung products such as the Vibrant, and many other iterations. Updates seems to either take forever or it'll may never see the light of day. As for developer community? I can't really complain about their support for this device, since they are bringing out the goodies out of their own time with no expectations of donations, etc. And I'm grateful that they are cooking up roms, etc. In the future? I will be purchasing a Google branded phone: prompt updates, and great end user support. I just can't live with a dead end product, just feels like I got cheated out.

Well I just went to T-Mobile store and played with the sgs2 and I must say I'm completely impressed.
With a quadrant score of 2748 stock I'm blown away.
With my shattered screen and assurion's choice of replacement I'm sticking with my broken vibrant with miui ...I'm hoping sgs2 gets miui soon ...but I'm getting antsy and just might go out next week and buy the sgs2 outright

What better than samsung vibrant?

Hey.
I am thinking of getting android phone, and samsung vibrant is on my list, but I want to know what is better than vibrant at the moment?
Any other andriod phones better than vibrant at the moment that has good features?
I cannot afford Nexus S at the moment as its very expensive without any contract.
Thanks.
You may find other phones that people claim is faster, such as g2 or mytouch 4g or something...but I have yet to see another android phone with the amazing gpu performance of the vibrant..plus, with a few tweaks, this phone is faster than lightning...
But to be fair, Samsung support for the phone isn't all the best. Don't expect timely updates and such. However, our dev community here is awesome and with it, you probably wont miss support from Samsung...

Vibrant and Nexus S are bascily the same, a bit different.
umm... i really can't think of any other phone. Vibrant has filled my needs, but if you plan NOT to put a custom rom on it, or Root it... then... dont get the vibrant, samsung has quit on us, and the devs are the only reason this section is alive.
I dont know how to root or what roms are, etc, but I was waiting for 2.2 I heard it had good features.
So but now that 2.2 is not coming out are there any roms that can fill that gap?

YES.
If your looking for a 2.2, there are some awesome ROMS.
Nero, Ginger Clone, and Axura are the most popular currently.
They DO have a FEW bugs, but they're pretty small ones.
there has been a LEAKED froyo(2.2) rom, if you want a stock one, there is one.
I think you'd love a Vibrant. Before you get irritated, when you buy it, open it right there, and in front of the guy who sold it to you check if the GPS works, some new ones still don't work, and if it doesn't ask for another, and another if you have to, but be sure to make the GPS work wether you use GPS or not, you'll get annoyed later.
Also, if you don't know how to root or flash custom ROMs, there are PLENTY of EASY STEP-by-STEP tutorials to do it.
Just get the nexus S if you don't want to root. Bad side of it is it doesn't have a external storage.

Yup no ext SD was a definite deal breaker for me. Other then that it's a very nice phone.
The mt4g is a great phone for the casual person. But i wouldnt trade my vibrant for it, Im gonna wait for the fabled galaxy s2.
Fear the beard...
I actually went ahead and pulled the trigger on getting a Nexus S today. I love my Vibrant and I'm keeping it as I've had loads of fun with it because of all the community support. Macnut R14 was and is still my rom of choice with the phone and it's very smooth and not that buggy at all - and my GPS works.
Having said that, the reason I got the NS is due to direct Google support. Considering Gingerbread is out now and Samsung has yet to deliver Froyo to 3 of the 4 GS models stateside, I finally made the decision to drive something I know is going to get timely updates. If you're not going to root get the Nexus the trade offs make it about even. If you are going to root then the Vibrant could a strong choice considering what it has over the NS. I know I'll still be here flashing roms for my Vibrant even though I have a different phone to play on now.
If I didn't mind being on Sprint, I'd say the Sprint HTC EVO is better in some respects than the Vibrant. No other phones come to mind. I also still consider the Vibrant to be the best Android powered phone on T-Mobile ATM. FYI, I don't like phones with built-in physical keyboards so I tend to immediately rule those out. The lack of both the SD card slot and gorilla glass on the screen are deal killers for me on the Nexus S when comparing it to the Vibrant. The Nexus S offers nothing I want which I don't already have (EXT4 file system) or won't get in the future (Gingerbread). Timely updates aren't worth it to me.

For the price of the Vibrants right now this is the best bang for your buck stock or not. Fast processor, very customizable, 14gig storage STOCK with an external slot to increase that to only the limits of microSD cards.
My opinion is the casual user will not notice a difference in 2.1 2.2 or 2.3 aside from some cosmetics which can be imitated by many free market apps. Casual user.....
For the non casual user I will reiterate what my fellow enthusiast have already pointed out. We are blessed with some REALLY talented ROM developers that have been nothing but generous with their time and efforts.
I have never gone to a manufacturer for support on any phone I have owned. Majority of the time the communities solve the problem 1000x faster.
I would also like to point out I am not biased to this phone because I own it lol, it just happens to be the one I own currently. I for one LOVE my Vibrant. I have had a g1, my touch, every iphone and some in between.
I have only used two other android phones: the Mytouch 4G and the G2. Both are hands down a much better user/android experience than the Vibrant i now own.
The only thing that makes me think about keeping the vibrant over these other phones is that the vibrant kicks their asses when it comes to audio playback, the quality is noticeably better.
Appart from that, battery life on the vibrant is lame, the screen is big but the colors are off, withes are actually blueish. The stock software is horrible, touchwiz is a joke, seriously, so is the fact that this thing still runs 2.1.
For the more that people talk about the speed of this phone, i found it to be incredibly laggy and slow, from apps to file transfers.
Ironically the best thing about the vibrant is that it made me use my phone a lot less than the Mt4G or the G2. The G2 made me a very anti-social person.

vibrant or nexus S
Currently have the iphone 4 from a trade I did with my nexus one. Going back to android! Stuck on which to choose the nexus S or the vibrant. Seems as if both phones are pretty much the same. Save a few hundred with the vibrant or go with the S
Thanks for all the answers, I got the Vibrant!!!!
Now, when it arrives, then need to do some reading on roms, flash, root, etc as I dont know anything about them....
To get full flash in browser, and to get GPS to work fully (if it does not work, hopefully it will) what ROM is the best to flash? And by flashing that rom, will I lose any of the stock rom features?
Because my vibrant will have stock 2.1

I said the same thing to the T-Mobile Reps. a couple months ago The phone has actually changed the way I use smartphones. Before I was always tethered to my smartphone, now I have to make sure I don't forget to pick it up when I go or leave some place. I don't really use it that much. It's just not fun. I tend to carry my notebook with me, now, and of course my ZuneHD
I think my next phone will almost certainly have a full QWERTY slide-out. Swipes way of automatically adding typos to the dictionary is annoying. I spent like an hour last night just removing typos that kept registering as words when trying to send texts and stuff.
My thought is that the Vibrant is the best media device on the market right now. Great codec support, best screen, excellent storage.
I've considered buying the Nexus S to use as a phone and to keep the Vibrant like it's an iPod Touch, just a movie/music/game device.

I love my Vibrant, yes even in 2011

Just wanted to say thanks again to all the Devs and Samsung for such a great phone. In fact I have owned this for half a year, which may be the longest I owned a phone in years. 2.2, haha who gives a damn. Ive been running it since the good people here made it available. I love TMO and my month to month plan rocks too. Since it released 6 months ago, I would expect a successor to come out by now anyway.
Thanks again Rom developers.

thank you finally a worth while thread i dont understand why there are so many threads on this forum that try to bring the phone down because of the 2.2 update that none of them probably need. honestly most of the people that post on those threads already have rooted their vibrants and are running a 2.2 rom. the only ones that have a right to complain are the developers that are waiting on the source code to make their roms better. this is a great phone and currently still one of the best if not the best available in the us market.

It's inevitable, most new phones in 2011 will be dual core. No worries about battery either, tegra 2 is pretty amazing. had some hands on at CES. For now, Im loving on my Vibrant.
I really like the vibrant as well I just wish TouchWiz with Android 2.3 would come instead of 2.2 so I'm still sad that Samsung has been such a *****.
I just got my Vibrant a couple of weeks ago as well (while it was free), moving from the MyTouch Slide. Nero v5 is one of the most stable roms I've used. The phone is beautiful, it flies, and I simply don't need the FFC and curved screen that Nexus S has. And god only knows when Maine is going to get 4G.
It definitely sucks that phones have to wait so long for an update, but it's not just Samsung. HTC still hasn't updated the Slide. The latest update is that a) Wifi calling isn't working reliably and b) they can't get it to install because of limited space on the system partition.
I figured if I was going to be rooted and providing myself with updates, I might as well have a nicer phone than the Slide.

Dual core is nice, but their is more to a device then the processor. Having the 16GB on board along with a memory card slot is what I love about the Vibrant. Until T-Mobile has a device with both, I will stick with my Vibrant.
Not sure what all the buzz is on the dual core. Android is not, and probably will not be optimized for dual core devices until next year, due to the nexus s, google's flagship, using the same single core hummingbird. Besides, compared to a vibrant on browsing and opening apps, you may have a 1-3 second difference, not worth the $200 upgrade.
Besides, all apps will mainly be optimized for single core devices, which are still the majority. And the power sgx 540 in the hummingbirds fares well against the tegra 2 gpu.

wow, theres new users

Wow. I just saw like a BUNCH of names, specifically in the ICS Passion thread, that a had about 12+ posts, and joined this month.

I am very happy that I bought this phone in July 0f 2010. I was not happy with the broken GPS and laggy performance of 2.1, but if it was not for the phone's problems and my frustrations with waiting for a fix from Samsung I never would have discovered XDA. If you think about it, these same problems presented a challenge to the dev community, it became an ongoing project that became fun and brought together a real "community" around the Vibrant. Now we are all enjoying ICS on an "obsolete" phone. Amazing! Thank you Team Whiskey for Bionix, Einherjar for Trigger, (I never used any GB Roms because I use GPS a lot) and now I have Neobuddy to thank for fully working GPS with ICS....
I was reading another thread tonight started by someone who hard bricked his Vibrant and called T-Mo for a replacement. They told him they were not supporting the Vibrant anymore and he was very bummed. He was persistent however and was overjoyed when T-Mo sent him a Vibrant. A few more people chimed about how Vibrants are not as easy to get now.
Like I said, a great community!
I think a lot of old users are upgrading and so there's a fair amount of used Vibrants on the market for a good price. Buy a used phone with no warranty and naturally the first thing to do is mod it
I bought a Vibrant just because of ICS Passion...and the fact that the HTC Sensation doesn't have an AMOLED screen.

Got mine for $180 off eBay. It was already rooted with CM7 and unlocked. Only downside is that the battery was sort of drained (solved by an Anker battery for $12 though) and there's some bumps and scratches on the bezel.
There's also a seller selling a brand new one for $300 rooted and unlocked. It's a great deal compared to even some of the newest phones out there.
I'm an avid Vibrant users and I've been using XDA for quite some time. I hate the new posting rules but I can deal. And ICS is really sweet as ICS(s)
I have had my Vibe since Oct 2010, I have been looking for a new phone and really want a Nexus but will not buy new without warranty. Right now I am quite happy with my Vibrant but really want a bigger screen with higher resolution. I also want to be able to turn the GPS radio on and off without having resident process draining the battery. Before anyone says go back to a 2.2 or 2.1 ROM, I just can't do it. I have tried but I just can't go back to an early OS build. I can't even go back to a GB ROM since I have had ICS. All earlier OS builds just feel to antiquated. To me it would be like going back to Windows 98 because there are a few DOS based games that don't run in Windows 7 X64.
With that said, I can fully understand why we have new users. The Vibrant is still leagues better than any new mid-range devices and can run toe to toe with all but the Newest High End phones that came out late Winter last year. I will be sad when giving up this very trustworthy device when I finally do. My wife will get it after me so at least it will stay in the household.

I am suprised too, its a great phone, but before ics came out it was pretty quiet around here. Its still the same old question though, how much farther can the vibrant go? Im hanging on to mine, no telling what might leak.
Just sold mine.. There's going to be a few new members as someone else said because the resale market. I personally don't think I will ever sign a cell contract again.. If the phone I'm using loses support or is dead here, marketplace for new one, and sell the old one.

Solid device
I've had a vibrant since December 2010. Found one for myself and my girlfriend from shady backstreet dealers in Houston for $230 and a brand spanking new one for $250 . I've been flashing it since shortly after I received it. Bionix was solid. I was a bit disappointed with 2.3 roms in general and then ICS passion came out. It is the best ROM I've ever used hands down. I've yet to see the stutter that sometimes accompanied 2.2 and 2.3 roms. Apps maybe take a tiny bit longer to load than on CM7 but the general interface is so damn smooth it makes the occasional app launching non-problematic.
Now if only Swype would get updated to be compatible with ics...

NO. YOUR DOING IT WRONG.
you forgot to water it. anything with roots needs water to be kept alive. unless you want a brick. water it. definitely.
Well, actually the ICS neobuddy put out is what brought me here. I've learned quite a bit over the last could weeks. Root\ICS has really brought new life to my phone.

EVO 4g... my favorite device so far.

I must say this has been my favorite device to play around with that I have in my little arsenal of devices. I got this baby for free from a co-worker when she dropped it in a bowl of water. She was going to donate it and I immediately told her that I would take it. I sure am glad I did. To think about 2 years ago it came out with the specs it has was a breakthrough for Android devices and it still is a really strong almost unbreakable beast. I still use it on a daily basis to watch youtube videos via HDMI. Also the EVO 4g community is great with good peoples. I swear sometimes I think a noob is going be hanged when they ask a question but instead someone respectfully answers them. Great devs, great people, which will make me hold on to this device until this place becomes a ghost town which I don't think will happen anytime soon.
Please share any awesome experiences you guys have had with this device
This is the first and only smart phone I have owned. It has taken me to high levels of enjoyment and understanding. I have dived deep into Android and haven't been held back by my device.
I will say I am not happy with htc's recent trickery with their bootloaders but if they did a nexus device I would be right on it.

I still use my "decommissioned" EVO 4g daily to surf and watch netflix. It has become my "PDA." It is, however, tethered to my rooted 3devo which is running ICS and Sense 4.0 Marriage made in heaven.

this was my first android phone. i was a fan of android before i got it, and definitely knew that my next phone would be an android, so when it came out its specs made me drool. i've had a ton of smartphones since they started coming out. i had dell axims before smartphones, and this phone really is awesome. i mean, i think that pretty much any high end android phone is pretty awesome considering where we were only a few years ago before android was fully mainstream, back when your option was an iphone that couldn't copy and paste text, or a windows mobile phone that would crash when pasting. the one thing that really stands out with the evo for me is the build quality. its not *that* bad. indestructible? oh no... this phone breaks in weird places without even being dropped, like the usb port, power button, etc. but since my last htc product with the touch pro, i didn't trust htc with building anything decent. that phone broke in so many ways it was unimaginable. i was always thinking, what's going to fall off next? so, i've owned the evo for almost 2 years now, and well, i still own it. that says something.
I fell in love with it the second I had it in my hands. Android has been an absolute blast and I love that its continuously being updated and stuff. I have now moved on to the new HTC EVO 4G LTE and use my OG EVO as a tethering device for my computer

I'm not sure if I want to get my hands on the EVO LTE yet. I have been looking at the Galaxy note seems like a pretty neat device to play around with but I do want another slider. I am very partial to my slider devices
Be-careful about the tethering.... don't hit 100gigs a month.

I'm considering the Note as well. Just wondering if I will get bored with it. Been hard to get bored with my evo 4g since I can always flash a new and different rom. But the Note is tempting
This is the only phone I've owned that has kept my attention for the life of the contract.

It is really amazing, that 2 years later this phone still holds it's own. I still think it's a great looking phone, and with the abundance of ROMs available I have a hard time upgrading.
I agree with the post above, it's hard to consider upgrading when there is such a great dev community here. Thanks all!
I think that by having hdmi out for netflix makes the phone badass
My favorite phone too.

It will be sad to decommission this one... but excited about the SG3. Never gonna let it go though!!

Just upgraded, saying thanks

Loved my Atrix, even though I had to replace it twice, it was great. It made me convert from the iphone to android and I wont go back. Saying thanks to all the Devs for all the support.
Upgraded to the Blue Galaxy S3, and I love this phone. It is the first iphone killer android ever released. Cant wait to start swapping roms!
Good luck and keep us informed!
Glad that you enjoyed the atrix, I myself am waiting for an update before I look into getting another phone. Truth is, I am just starting to tap the potential of this phone with the lap dock and dock unit hooked up to a monitor with Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. I have only ever used an Alien version from Kenneth Penn (sp?) But I think I am to the point, once ICS comes out and people have a chance to play with it, I may up clock mine and put some other rom on it. I don’t think I will go beyond 1.3 GHz, but I have never even seriously looked into it. I have had the option of an upgrade, but this phone is so fantastic with the FS, peripherals and speed, I have yet to see a phone come close to all that I use this for.
Perhaps a tablet and integrated phone combo will be my next option? IDK the transformer infinity looks to be a decent tablet, and I could use that for work and easily justify it.
Keep us up to date on like and dislikes in comparison to the atrix please!

I really love the large screen, at first it was overwhelmingly large but after a few hours I love it. Also love the 720p res and the crisp vibrant colors. Also its very smooth and fluid with the 2gb of system ram and 1.5ghz dual core.
ICS is really nice on this. I think I will keep the stock rom for a few weeks before flashing a new one.
A week ago I also switched to a Galaxy S III and I'm loving it too. I'm passing the Atrix down to my daughter -- it still has a lot of useful life left in it. The Atrix was also the phone that convinced me to switch from my IPhone. The Atrix really has been a phenomenal phone for me. I'm gonna miss it. Thus far I've determined that the bluetooth radio in the Atrix is better than the S3. But in all other regards I think the S3 is an advancement from Moto's awesome phone from last year. My daughter is gonna love the car and lap docks that I'm also passing down to her. Will be nice when the Atrix gets ICS too.

I can't blame you the development community has really slowed down. Seems like lots of devs have moved on. The two best nonbeta roms (neutrino and Nottach) have not been updated in some time. The cm9 roms are nice but stuck in limbo until official ICS.
I myself went to a OneX but returned due to poor call quality. It was rough coming back to a small grainy screen but for the size the Atrix is a great phone. It carries very well.
I was very close to picking up an s3 but we had some home repair bills around the house (dead AC, blown water tank) and I'm not 100% sure if I want to renew my ATT contract or go with something like Straightalk.
Also went to a White GS3 and its wonderful. Was using CM9 and didn't realize how choppy the Atrix was til I had something better. It was a fun ride but I can't keep waiting for nvidia/motorola to get their **** together.

Sorry not meaning to. This is my first Samsung android and I'm highly impressed. Last Samsung I owned was a blackjack. This s3 is fast!

I really hear you guys.
I might switch to the galaxy nexus, because my phone might have a motherboard problem(really hoping that it doesn't). However I feel terrible about it because this phone has SOOOO much potential, but it's marred by laggy choppy firmware, closed drivers. The atrix is a really great phone , and I wanna see the day when it'll run as smooth, stable, and fast as the the galaxy nexus on jelly bean. I know the atrix can, and then I'll know this phone is truly complete.
And hats off to the atrix dev community, for being one of the most effective on xda, especially with our limited drivers and resources
Well add me to the list. I too went with a GS3. Love it, but I still love this Atrix. I purchased a micro sim adaptor just so I could continue to use this baby. It actually feels faster and my GS3 is over clocked to 1890mhz. Still rocking the stock rom rooted with nothing frozen for now. Battery is no where near what I get with my Atrix, but like I said ...early stages of modding the Galaxy. I still read the forums when time allows and appreciate the dev community. You have all been great and a stepping stone to the path of making this phone more then the first dualcore power house that it is. Thanks!
