Netflix works great, my own videos don't - Kindle Fire General

Netflix is working good. However on a side note, my videos I loaded to the \videos folder don't show up in my library. I assume it is a format problem but they are all .m4v videos. I downloaded the only real player showing up in the amazon app store and it works fine for playing the videos. Now if I can just find out how to change the volume while watching.........

My books don't show up in the books when I add them. They show up in docs. They're .mobi too.

Only books that are purchased from Amazon will show up in the Books section. Even sideloaded Mobi files will appear in Docs.

I haven't tested side-loading the Nook app (I'm an Amazonian), but I'd imagine that would work.
The Kindle reader does not support .epub. Side-loaded mobi files open and read like Amazon purchased books.

My videos showed up in the Gallery app but it would not play them, it said it was an unsupported format. For now I'm going to just stream my own stuff to the Kindle using Emit which is available on the Amazon app store.

You can sideload the Aldiko ebook reader and the nook app without a problem.

I use calibre to prepare and load my books to all my kindles and book that I had on my previous kindle I just copied to \books folder on my Fire. it showed up in carousel and in books section. I was also able to use whisper sync to sync page read to my ipad2 kindle app as well as iphone app

I downloaded a .mobi from the internet. Put it in the Books folder. It shows up fine for me (with cover art).

My .mobi files placed in the Books folder show up in the Documents.
As for videos, thus far, I can use Root Explorer to find the content and play as long as it is .mp4.
.mov and .divx won't play with the default player.

If you remove the pdoc tag from your .mobi files they will load into your Books Library with cover art and sync as any other book. You can use Calibre to do it.

What I did was changed the extension from .m4v to .mp4 and my videos that I sideloaded show up and play fine.
They were HQ videos I converted for my iPad. Hope that helps

I am using rockplayer and it seems to reed most file and wmv and plays vey smooth...
rockplayer.com
I also have yxplayer but its a tad slow...

MX Video Player
I had a few .avi files (divx or xvid encoded) that I couldn't play. M4V, WMV, others played fine in the standard video player. MX Player from the Android Market worked like a charm, just the free version was needed.
This is my first post, so it won't let me post a link, but its easy to find.

Issues with ASUS eee TRANSFORMER

I have problems installing market apps -- I always get a notification that Installation is unsuccessful. I was trying to install video players like Moboplayer and VPlayer. Previous installs like CNBC worked fine.
Also, I was not able to find the stock video player. Where is it? Like to add a video player which support more type of videos like DIVX.
I did found out that I could not install any apps from Market when I have connection with my PC.
Thanks for your help.
ps: my new tablet, contrary to XOOM, is not supporting synch book marks with CHROME! Anyone know how?
where are you located at?
For movies, the Gallery app is the same as the movies app. If you go to File Manager and look for the movie you wanna watch (it can be saved on the TF hard drive or the microSD card foler), just tap on the movie file name and you'll get prompted to which application to use to play that movie. It will show "Movies" and "Moboplayer" as the options if you have MoboPlayer installed. If you don't, it shows as Movies and you click on it and you can start watching it provided it's a format that is supported.
I strongly suggest downloading MoboPlayer though.
I can't install moboplayer as it fails installing. Any idea why?
Found problem...
I ran out of 16GB file space....
Anyone let me know how to use CHROME bookmarks with browser....

Gallery application does show movies

I have a US Xoom just updated to 3.2 I have a few videos in the Movies folder which I can see with EX Explorere and play with Rockplayer. But in the Gallery application there isn't even a movies folder to view the titles of the vidoes. It only show download and Camera.
I tried moving a video file into the download folder (avi DIVX) and it still won't show. Yet I was playing with a non US Xoom with 3.1 and it showed a movies folder with content on it.
Anybody know why this would be the case?
Thanks

[Q] watching movies on the nook

hi,
I want to know whats the best way (format & quality, an app) to watch some movies on the nook. It no need to be in best quality but it should work.
;-) just for my wife to kill time before getting the baby in the hospital ....
do you have any suggestion?
thanks for your help!
My wife uses netflix, works great. What is the status of your nook? Stock or rooted?

If you're running CM7...
I just did a lot of this for my wife who was convalescing...To covert to a format I can watch on the NC, I use AVS Tools video converter, but any converter will work fine for media you have rights to; there is an M4v* conversion preset for the iphone (720p) which works great on nook color (I run CM7 & use standard movie player). NO tweaks really needed, but I set the frame rate to 29.97 to match the source. Smaller video sizes don't seem to make much difference in file size. With CM7 the google videos you can dnload work great on Nook Color.
For loading, I suggest transferring via your SD card, wireless transfers of movies takes forever.
* Nice format as I can then load same files on my wife's ipad. Yeah she gets the cadillac tablet, I get the tweakers tab...
If running CM7 -
I suggest mobo player with the moboplayer codec for armv7vfp3 (two separate apps on Google Market). I've had extremely smooth playback with software decoded files that I was too lazy to convert to a supported format.
If encoding for Nook Color in general (CM7 or stock):
MP4 container, H.264 baseline profile, up to 854x480 resolution. Technically the screen is 1024 x 600 but NCs have a hardware limitation for decoding higher than 854x480, YMMV with that.
I use DVD Catalyst 4 (paid software, was $10? I think) which has several Nook Color presets (and updated recently for Nook Tablet) as well as other tablets and phones, such as the Xoom. Just easier to click the preset, adjust for subtitles/alternative voice track if needed, then set a whole batch of videos to recode.
I've used free applications like Handbrake, for which you can get a preset profile for the Nook Color. I just like the ease of DVDC4 for converting both digital and hard media.
on cm7
moboplayer decodes and smoothly plays back every movie I've ever "obtained" from the internet
no need to convert anything
The vlc beta works really well. I like mobo too, just had some syncing issues with a few of my xvid avis.

Thanks for all the feedback. I have some DVDs she would like to see (means converting?) . I use the NC with CM7 (1 month old NL version) from SD.
So what's the best way?
Thanks!

Handbrake is definitely the best for DVD conversion. It has easy to use presets. I'be had good luck with iPod touch preset. Reasonable file size and decent video quality.

FREE: Handbrake with some preset profile, there were a few here. For a basic, no-frills, very customizable encoder, it's very good. And it's free.
PAID: IMO, DVD Catalyst 4. $10. I'm in no way affiliated with the company, just have been a very happy customer with the ease of use/results. With minimal tinkering I've gotten better results for some tricky conversions (e.g., multiple episodes, multiple sound tracks/subtitling options, widescreen) than with Handbrake. For me it's worth the money not to have to spend time tinkering with test encodes, tweaking settings, etc. so I can just batch jobs up and do other things.
YMMV, of course.

Handsdown the WORST dvdripping software (experience) on the market, I have no idea why everyone reccomends it. I use Magic DVD Ripper. Simple easy to use interface, with advanced options if needed.
streaming videos from share to Nook Color
I "stream" all my videos to my Nook Color via 802.11g using CifsManager and VitalPlayer software decoding. Occasionally the video I'm watching will be hardware decoded by VitalPlayer if the codec is correct. And occasionally, if watching a big .mkv file I get a little chatter with only 54Mb 802.11g, but that's very rare.
It beats the hell out of copying video files to /mnt/emmc or /mnt/sdcard over wireless.
1) grab VitalPlayer from the Market (free version is OK, the ads only show up when the controls are visible)
2) grab CifsManager from the Market.
3) Configure your share on any old computer/NAS and put video files in it. Know these things: the workgroup, the share perms (username/password) and leave the NTFS perms at Everyone Full Control.
4) on your Nook Color, use Terminal to create folder /mnt/cifs
5) fire up CifsManager and connect to your share point, mounting it to /mnt/cifs, remembering to specify the path, workgroup, username and password. When the dot in CifsManager is green, you're mounted.
6) using File Explorer, or Root Explorer on your Nook Color (any Android file manager will do) browse to /mnt/cifs/[share name] and browse your video files. Select the video to play.
7) Select VitalPlayer if asked, and set to default if desired.
8) Wait a few seconds for VitalPlayer to start your video. Usually it will display "Software Decoding" before it starts playing.
I've never met a codec that VitalPlayer didn't like.
OR you could just download ES File Explorer and Rock Player from the market, and browse your Windows Media Server(s) on your network, playing files through Rock Player (which supports almost any file type for wireless streaming).
I use Mobo for the NC.
However, I do have a strange problem. On my Xoom, I can reach my NAS using ES File Explorer and it will stream to the Xoom.
If I use the NC to the exact same file, it will try to download the file and play it locally. I'm assuming that it will also only work for files that are re-encoded for the NC format and if its not, it will just simply chock on playback.
How does an app like Netflix do it? Do they have various encoded versions or is there some transition layer within the Netflix APK?

Not sure - I have used ES File to access movies, and they stream. If it's the wrong file format though ES File will open a browser window. So make sure it's a m4v of the right dimensions etc & it should stream.
The player is what supports the streaming Not the file explorer. Rock Player is the only one I've used that worked for streaming. ES media player would try and cache the file locally first.

OK, makes sense...I was using Mobo when streaming.
viewing really wide screen movie
For those born before 1970, there's a great movie called How the West Was Won (HWWW). The aspect ratio is wider that 16:9. When I play on NC, the aspect ratio is wrong. Yet viewing the m4k file with VLC on my PC, the aspect ratio is correct.
TV shows and other movies display correctly on NC.
Why does the native movie player or the ES Explorer view change the aspect ratio. Any suggestions?

[Q] play movie from networked PC on A500

I have a bunch of movies on an external hard drive connected to my home PC.
I want to be able to play the movies on my A500 whilst connected to the TV elsewhere in the house (over wifi)
I've played with clearfi with no luck. Is there an app that will allow me to do this easily with just a few clicks ?
Cheerz
I use PS3 Media Server on my PC and Bubble UPNP on my A500. Works great.
Thanks. I'll give them a try later. Will it play .avi files ?
I'm running off Thor's ROM, but I've had no issues streaming avi files via upnp.
The easiest method is BSPlayer, it actually lets you view movies from a shared folder rather than UPnP. You might have some lag with large files, but it does the job better than trying to get UPnP functionality to work 100% of the time.
There are a lot of options for streaming from PC. The easiest I've used so far is ES file explorer and MX video player. Just go to LAN in ES and stream via smb. MX streams/plays all the formats I have thrown at it.
If you have a custom rom with a kernel supporting cifs, you could try cifs manager. It create a shared folder on a specified location. It works great for music too. I can even scan my network shared music library with the stock music player (or other) by creating a shared folder on the sd-card.

For movies, I also recommend MovieBrowser HD, a nice front end that scan your movie library and fetch covers and descriptions, opens with your fav movie player.

Same here, es file explorer and mx or dice works great.
I'd second Diceplayer in a heartbeat if I could actually buy the full version. The trial played everything I threw at it including 720p avi and mkv files.
I just used File Manager HD to browse to folder and BS player to stream, very easy.
I tried a VLC app and it worked pretty well. Just make sure its not the remote app.

I was going to buy the full version but its saying the account is locked or something?
I'm going to spend this weekend trying all the suggestions - thanks
I ran into the same issue. I ended up giving BS Player a shot and it handled 720p mkv and avi files like a dream. Granted, it was playing them off an external HDD, but it's definitely worth a download.
Yes I think that FM HD is the best for LAN connection over wi-fi and xm player. But mx player cannot read subtitles from network drive.
Serviio for the pc (dlna server java software) and skifta on your A500.

Workaround to get personal videos on Kindle Fire video library

I think that is a huge problem on kindle fire, i mean, we can stream our music for amazon cloud drive but not videos or other documents.
I know it's possible to get to amazon cloud drive on silk (or any browser) and download files from there to kindle, but still these ones will not appear on video library but yes on galery app.
Only purchased videos will appear on video library.
Also if i upload videos for my fire they will only appear on galery app and not on video library.
I want to know if there is any way to get my videos on video library on kindle fire.
anyone?

I've looked into this fairly extensively and I haven't not found a solution that doesn't involve using a third party syncing service that can stream. I use Sugarsync, I know that Dropbox will work as well. I just use SS to store my vids in the cloud and then download/stream them to the Kindle and view using the Video player or Moboplayer.
It's a kludge, but it works fine for now.
So basically, I use:
Sugarsync to store/stream
ES File Explorer to view/delete/move
Gallery or Mobo to view
and using subtitles?
