[HOWTO] Flash a rom the n00b Pro way - Nexus S General

****This How TO was made for use with ClockworkMod Recovery. And may not work on other recoverys.****
To make this easier we will use Rom Manager for some of this How To. Here is the download link https://market.android.com/details?...xLDEsImNvbS5rb3VzaGlrZHV0dGEucm9tbWFuYWdlciJd
**Step 1**
If you don't have ClockworkMod Recovery please continue follow this step. If you have it or dont want to use ClockworkMod Recovery move to the next step.
1.) In Rom Manager choose “Flash ClockworkMod Recovery” and select you fone. And follow the step that are giving to you. Now you have ClockworkMod Recovery on your fone.
**Step 2**
Now with that said download your new soon to be favorite rom. You can find some here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13633553&postcount=2 .
After you download the rom move it to the root of your SD card(not a must but it does make it easier). Remember on some rom you must also download and flash the GAPPS. Make sure you download the needed zip and move to the root of your SD card also.
**Google Wallet Step** (Not Required)
Also if you rom does not include Google Wallet you may want to run down the flash-able zip and also put it on the root of your SD card.
**Step 3**
Now it is time too boot into ClockworkMod Recovery. Goto Rom Manager and select”Reboot into Recovery”
Now you should be in ClockworkMod Recovery.
How to navigate in ClockworkMod Recovery: Volume Rocker = Up/Down, Power Button = Select, Back Button = Back(duh)
Now I would suggest backing up your current rom by doing a nandroid backup. Use this guide to learn how. http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=How_to_backup_or_recover_via_Nandroid
**Step 4**
Now in ClockworkMod Recovery it is time to prepare your fone to flash the new rom.
1.) Got “wipe cache parition” and select it. Then select “ Yes – Wipe Cache” Now t should take you back t he first screen.
2.) Goto “advanced” and select it.
3.) Now goto “Wipe Dalvik Cache” Then select “ Yes – Wipe Davik Cache” Now t should take you back the advanced screen.
4.) Next go back to the main screen and select “mounts and storage”
5.) Now format /system, /cache, /data, /boot
**Step 5**
Now that we have prepared our fone to flash the rom it is time to do that now.
1.) On the main screen goto “install zip from sdcard”
2.) Now choose “choose zip from sdcard”
3.) Next find the rom zip and select it(if you put it on the root of you SD card it should be somewhere near the bottom)
4.) Now just select “Yes” your rom will install it's self now. When it is done it will take you back to the screen in step 2 of this step.
**GAPPS Step** (Skip if your rom does not need you to flash the GAPPS or if you just dont need them.)
1.) Select “choose zip from sdcard”
2.) Next find the GAPPS zip and select it(if you put it on the root of you SD card it should be somewhere near the bottom)
3.) Now just select “Yes” GAPPS will install it's self now. When it is done it will take you back to the screen in step 1 of this step.
**Google Wallet Step** (Skip this if you do not wish to flash Google Wallet.)
4.) Select “choose zip from sdcard”
5.) Next find the Google Wallet zip and select it(if you put it on the root of you SD card it should be somewhere near the bottom)
6.) Now just select “Yes” Google Wallet will install it's self now. When it is done it will take you back to the screen in step 1 of this step.
**Step 6**
Go back to the main screen of ClockworkMod Recovery and choose “reboot system now”. Your fone will reboot it's self. This first reboot can take upto 5 to 10 minutes this is normal. When you fone boots into your new rom follow the on screen directions to see up your Google account. When done reboot your system. Now you are done.

Isn't this info already available in xxx threads and stickies? Nice try though.
And wtf is this in the DEVELOPMENT forum?

OP, ignore the haters. They have nothing else to do but pretend they are pro with a Nexus s
Even though most ppl figure out cwm, Its ddifferent per phone. The x10 used xrecovery, so when I switched phones I was like. . . What is cwm.
When I messed with the Droid 2 and d2global, cwm worked in a whole differant way that could brick phones.
So I think its useful for phones to have there own cement thread, as it WILL help someone who's having a tough time .
If someone's gotta be an arse about a polite attempt to help fellow xda members, get a life and go flame a fanboy thread instead.
Good job op

Bought Evo on eBay... has s-off but recovery goes to red triangle

Ok bought an evo on eBay, after getting rid of my evo for a blackberry and realizing I made a huge mistake. It's used but like new.
I go to the boot screen and it says s-off. Then I select recovery but it goes to an evo with a red triangle.
What can I do?
Thanks

If you can acess the bootloader, I would recommend searching in the rooting wiki and look for a PCIMG file place that in the root of the sd card(hopefully your comp has a media reader) and insert the sd card with that file and the bootloader should detect when you select recovery.
What that file does is resets everything on the phone to stock. if you could find a RUU that might work but if your comp cant see the phone its useless i hope this helps
oh hey just stole this from a post from mattykins(thanks for the link) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884060

If you're s off, your rooted. The triangle means you have no recovery. All you need to do is flash a PC36IMG of recovery, using the bootloader. Once you do that, you'll have recovery, and can flash a rom of your choice. That's it. No need to re root or ruu or anything like that. Just recovery, that's it.

This would probably be the easiest thing. DL clockwork from the market and install the recovery I prefer amon_ra it will be at the bottom under alternate recoveries. Also do a nand backup as soon as you have a recovery.
I agree with above, just get rom manager from the market and flash a recovery...simple
We're comin from a pure power source.

SUre, give me one sec to upload a file for you. And as the other guys suggested, flashing a recovery using ROM manager would be your easiest bet. HOWEVER, if you dont have the SUPER USER app, (which i bet you do not), rom manager wont work. t herefore you cant flash anything with it.
So give me one sec, and i'll upload what you need to flash, with instructions for ya
EDIT: I attatched a recovery for you. It's Amon Ra V2.3. Download the PC36IMG, and leave it named exactly as it is. Place the file on the main directory (root) of your sd card. Power your phone off completely. Then boot to the bootloader by holding the power and volume down buttons simultaneously. When it gets to the bootloader, after a sec it will scan for files, and find the PC36IMG. It will then ask you if you want to update, so select yes (volume UP). Once it's done flashing, it'll ask you to reboot. Select no. Then choose the 'recovery' option from the bootloader menu. You should now successfully boot into Amon Ra V2.3 recovery. From that point, you can create a backup of your current setup. Then you can perform a full wipe, and then flash the rom of your choice.
And what ever you do DON'T restore a nandroid from your old phone. You will wipe out your 4g if the wimax partition is included in the nandroid.

Ok that worked. I now have Amon ra recovery
But, lol, one more question. Amon ra has changed since I've had an evo.. now when I select backup, it has a list of things I want to back up with "[x]" next to them. Which items should I select? It didn't have that feature in the past so I'm a little lost.

Right, that feature was added after version 1.8.0 (which I still use). I believe you want to check all of the boxes, for your first backup. (I'm not sure if you need to have everything checked after that, but I'm sure it couldn't hurt). I've seen people say that you only need to back up your wimax one time, then keep the file in a safe place (it's your RSA keys), however I just can't see what the problem is with backing it up each time. I kind of like the simplicity of 1.8.0, just hit backup and let it do it's thing. Whatever the heck 1.8.0 automatically backs up on its own, works perfectly fine for me, lol.
So I would just check everything off, and then let it perform the backup.
EDIT: and sorry I don't have more info on that for ya. I'm sure someone else who regulrarly uses ar 2.3 will chime in, and give you a more solid answer. I just simply don't use that recovery, as I never saw a need to 'upgrade' from 1.8.0, because it has always worked flawlessly for me. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I'd say you could use 1.8.0 if you wanted to, but I believe it won't work on the 004 hardware phones with the 0040000 size erase block.
Ok cool.
Thanks again
And yes i remember the simple way, things are supposed to get easier as time goes on, not more complicated, haha!

Do you have SDK and working fastboot? That is step one.
Yep
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
*note* i did not develop this method entirely i scrapped it together from multiple posts found here on xda. I give credit to those who did the work first. it worked fine for me hopefully it works for you too.
download sdk tools and install
download fastboot drivers and install
both found here
after that, download clockwork recovery
also download superuser files you want eclair/froyo su it works for gingerbread too.
open command prompt and enter the following
Code:
fastboot devices
if it doesn't return your phone in the following line double check that your fastboot drivers are properly installed.
if it does enter the following
Code:
fastboot oem unlock
follow the onscreen prompt on your phone. volume up to "yes" and hit power to confirm
Your phone is now unlocked. next step installing a recovery.
navigate to the folder where the clockwork recovery image is located.
Code:
cd C:\users\#username#\downloads
or wherever the file is on your pc.
then enter the following
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.4-crespo.img
you now have a proper recovery installed on your phone you may now vol dn to recovery and hit power to confirm
VERY IMPORTANT
in recovery vol dn to "backup and restore" power to confirm
select Backup and hit power again.
you just created a nandroid backup of your phone if you ever mess it up you can restore it back to when it was stock and problem free
In recovery vol dn to "mounts and storage" power to confirm
then choose "Mount USB storage"
copy the SU zip to the root of your phone's storage
then "Unmount"
then "+++++Go Back+++++"
then "install zip from sdcard"
then "choose zip from sdcard"
Choose su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip
then select "Yes - Install su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip"
Reboot your phone and you should now have a stock rooted phone.
Ty Joe I will do this as soon as I get home

i just came from the evo and rooted that phone way before any one click roots where out. Trust me the nexus s is 100 times easier to root than any other phone it's actually pretty quick and easy, i just went into great detail so anyone could be able to follow it hopefully. I think i have seen some 1 click roots for the ns but i never looked into them once i saw how relatively pain free it is to do this way.
i remember having to copy and paste adb commands and spamming them while my phone rebooted. and hopefully... hopefully it would unlock the evo.
just out of curiousity as i wont know until tomorrow, but does gingerbreak work? if so just using the sdk and using adb to push it seems like it would be faster..

Yes there has been success using that. You could i suppose gain root with gingerbreak and then use that to flash clockwork recovery. You would be rooted and able to flash Roms through clockwork. Bootloader would remain locked.
Thanks all. I'll try this later tonight and report back. I've seen a few root methods around here but wanted to make sure it was no different for the ns4g before I actually got into it.
So to confirm one more time Joe's method he posted here should work for the ns4g as well, right?

Install clockwork 3.0.2.4
Make sure you've renamed the /system/etc/install-recovery.sh script (if you haven't already) as well so clockwork isn't overwritten by the stock recovery.

So for you all that are trying to follow joe's steps, they are correct except the download linked in his post will give you the 3.0.0.4 version of Clockwork and you need the one referenced by netarchy (3.0.2.4). All worked as planned after that.

Can we also include the way to get back? It seems that is what most people are concerned about in addition how to get there in the first place. Thanks.

I'm all for this thread, but I do believe that OP needs to be a bit more informative.
For a start include details on checking which hboot you have installed. This question has all ready been asked a lot.
A video tutorial. I never use them but people do seem to like them.
There also seems to be a lot of people worried about flashing the DZ hboot then having to return to there phone for warranty purposes. Its irrelevant which hboot you are using whilst rooted. You are still going to need to return to the stock hboot. A guide for this exists here.
Also maybe ask RMK if you can copy and post this instructions in to the first post. Currently this thread does not really contain any Dev related info and might be closed.
And maybe include instructions for people that don't use adb

guys for ppl who donot want to use ADB. or cannot understand how to make it work ..... the process is simple... follow these steps and complement them with rmk guide .....
before you start make sure you have enough battery and do a Nandroid backup before hand.
1. download the PC10img.zip from rmk guide.
2. connect your phone as disk drive with your pc. and copy the pc10img.zip into root folder of your SDcard....
3. check the MD5sum of pc10img.zip on your SD card and compare it with the one provided in rmks guide. (you can either use a pc based software to check md5sum.... many free ones out there.... or use some software like "Man D5" its md5sum generator free on android market)
4. if the MD5sums match than just simply reboot into bootloader (power off the phone than turn it back on while holding the power and volume down button)
5. when it asks you whether you wanna install pc10img. select yes by pressing the volume button.(it will tell you whether to press volume up or down)
6. Now pc10img will install and it will reboot in the process once so dont do anything until second reboot.
7.after second reboot when your phone is stuck at HTC screen for some time. take out the battery and put it back in and go back into bootloader.
7.5 Put sdcard in another phone or memory card reader and delete/move/rename PC10IMG.zip.
(if you have no other phone or no other media to read the SDcard to delete the pc10img.zip file than whenever you restart bootloader it will scan sdcard and it will ask you if you wanna install pc10img.zip file volume down to install and volume up to ignore i think..... so you have to press volume up to ignore it and than get into recovery as given in step 8. than later you can delete the zip from sdcard via either recovery or when your nandroid is restored )
8. this time go into recovery. it will give you some errors like..... this not accessible and that not accessible.
9. Just do a full wipe, than wipe cache , than wipe dalvik cache from the advanced menu.
10. At this point you could simply just do a nandroid restore. but a friend of mine had some force closes after nandroid restore at this point. so for that i would suggest that you after completing wipes..... take out the battery and than put it back in and again go into bootloader than into recovery.
11. this time you shouldnt get any errors of "cannot mount this or that"
12. At this point do a nandroid restore and you will be back to your original state but with a DZ hboot .....
(if for some reason your again getting cannot mount or access cache at point 11.... than again wipe cache and it should fix it.....
hope it helps anyone who is having problems adb .....

ohh yea forgot that ... thats very important too let me add it up in the post
There's also a way to check if you actually accomplished this, because nothing noticeably changes. Someone in the irc channel showed me how to check via ADB how much /system and /data you have after the process.

simpler way is to download "quick system info pro" from market... it shows size and used spaces of all internal partitions and external partitions
you can also verify in titanium backups main menu at the bottom
Easiest way to check is to go into the bootlaloder and see what it says.

New untinkered G2 - what's the easiest way to Sim Unlock + S-OFF + flash custom ROMs?

I'm currently assuming that the easiest, most direct way is following this guide:
[Guide] Subsidy Unlock, SuperCID, and Radio S-OFF
Are there any newer, faster, safer, or more stable ways to do all the things I listed?
Thanks!

... calm down... how else do you suppose I found the guide in my OP?
I believe the xda wiki still offers the safest, most up to date root method.
Easiest way BY FAR is this (I just got a replacement in the mail for my G2 and had to re-root, reinstall CM7... It took less than 20 minutes total.)

^ won't let me post official links yet lol.
IGNORE THE PART ABOUT INSTALLING THE ENG-HBOOT. You do not need it at all, and will only complicate the fu** out of the process.
After this, installing Cyanogenmod is a cake walk.
1. Breathe
2. Install ROM Manager from the Market
3. Open ROM Manager and Click the top most option, "Flash Clockworkmod Recovery".
4. After this is complete, click Download ROM in ROM Manager.
5. Click Cyanogenmod (not nightlies)
6. Click 7.1.0-RC1
7. Download
8. Click Google Apps
9. Hit Ok
10. Make sure all three options are checked (Backup existing ROM, Wipe Data and Cache, Wipe Dalvik Cache)
11. It will reboot and install automatically, then reboot into your new custom ROM.
12. Enjoy!
If you want to backup all your apps and data (Messages, settings, account informations), download Titanium Backup from the market before step 2 and click Menu on your phone --> Batch Operations --> Backup ALL Apps + Data. Voila, when you reboot into CM7, you want to open up Titanium Backup and click "Restore ALL Apps + Data". Reboot once more. Voila, custom ROM + All your old data/settings/apps.
Enjoy man! Welcome to the glorious world of root ^_^
Also, there are videos of installing CM7 on G2. Search unlockr.com for G2 advanced videos.
Honestly, its just a learning process...you need to scour the net to figure this out. XDA forums + Cyanogenmod Forums + Unlockr.com are your best friends for pretty much anything/everything you need to know.

This is definitely the easiest and most straight forward way.
Its been forever since i got my g2, are ppl still using gfree? That was ridiculously simple when i got mine. Or is there some new somehow easier way? I just remember when i got mine gfree method was the preferred method.

Oh look a snob that didn't read my first response.
Seriously, why bother telling somebody to search. If you've got nothing helpful to ad maybe just don't say anything?
I for one am thankful for this thread, I'm a newbie and read all the different rooting threads and basically felt overwhelmed due to the many different methods and choices. It makes you feel more confident when several people say "do this, its the easiest".

I feel for you man. I come from the milestone section of xda. Things were simpler there...1 way to do things. Also less people meant less repeat questions and therefore less rtfm/search reponses.
My experience: all guides were simple to follow and people in each thread answered questions in a friendly manner. The hardest part for me? Donwgrading to a vulnerable ruu. If you dont need to goldcard, the guide with gfree is a piece of cake.
Good luck.

In my experience, the visionary/gfree method is quite easily the simplest...
Check it out here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928160
However, It doesn't always work. It depends on whether or not you have received your Froyo OTA to v1.22 yet, in which case, it doesn't....
You would have to use this method which involves setting up and using ADB to gain permanent root... This is recorded in the XDA Wiki. The link to the article is referenced in the link above...
If you've upgraded to gingerbread then it gets more difficult. You will have to use this method..
Check that out here: http://theunlockr.com/2011/07/22/how-to-downgrade-a-gingerbread-t-mobile-g2-so-it-can-be-rooted/
That should do it... But you should note that a lot of people are just not willing to do the reading necessary to find the answers. Sometimes people may snap at you because they are tired of doing what i just did... Threads are filled with people asking the same questions over and over again...
You may be different but just saying... Read first then ask later...
Take my advice and use the xda wiki. It took me thirty minutes to root via that guide. Also, for the love of god don't follow the user's instuctions that said to skip s-off! That is so important, and often the only thing that saves a user who flashes an incorrect rom, or accidentally does something stupid.
Btw: notice how all of the senior members reccomend the xda wiki, and gfree? Probably something to that, anyway here's the wiki, happy flashing!

I recently rooted my S3 i747 and then installed cyanogenmod 10. Keep in mind I am not a wiz at doing these things, however it did work. Here in lies my problems. 1. I hate this OS with a passion. Its just not what i thought it would be so I would love nothing more than to figure out how to remove it and return to stock firmware or another custom rom. 2. If i stay with this rom (for not being able to figure out how to remove it and install another) I am running out of storage internally. Its a great possibility I could have done something wrong. so with that being said, can anyone help me? I have tried more websites than I care to. thanks so much!
backup?

Well what I did was follow along a youtube video... Which in turn may not have been the best idea. I remember doing some sort of back up on clockwork or something like that. I tried to go to recovery mode and restore but that didnt help. Im not sure what all I did to be honest. :/

edit... Pull the battery on your phone and put it back in. Hold up vol, home button and Power till you see the little words in the top left corner. It should say booting recovery really small. at that point take your finger off of the power button only and it will boot into Recovery.
If you have CWM recovery or TWRP you are golden...
Or else... see below
Find your phone in it's section you should be able to find a method using Odin to flash it back to stock and then you can read up and find the way to do everything you want.
Just do your research and look through the forum for your phone type/carrier and you should be able to find all of the information that you are looking for.
Search and you shall succeed!

why do you guys make things so complicated? the guy wants his phone back to stock.
The only thing you have to do is to go to www.sammobile.com/firmwares. Then put your phone number i9100 in the search box and choose any of the roms below. They are all stock, 2.3/4.x.x etc. The rom is in a zip file, however, you have to extract the tar file inside it.
Power off your phone then, while holding vol down, press and hold power.
Open odin in your pc then connect the phone to pc while being in download mode. press the pda button in odin and insert the .tar rom whoch you have just extracted. press start and you are done.

Well returning to stock is just as easy as finding a stock ROM in his phones thread and flashing it, it'll be better in the long run that way as well because maybe he'll learn something.
