How many of you will rollback to Froyo and why? - Epic 4G General

This is a serious question for me. Now that I've gotten a good look at EI22 I'm not so sure I welcome the change.
The issue I find to be the biggest problem is the blue overscroll. I'm really not a fan of it at all...in fact the color blue they used doesn't match the other blues currently in use on our phones. I dunno...maybe I have color blindness.
Besides...what's the point?...they took away our multi_shaded blue battery indidcator. Really is kind of a downer, as I was hopeing to remain stock once Ginger was in my life.
Anyways.../me puts on a fire retardant suit.

Not sure what the big deal is with GB? Maybe I'm just dumb? Honestly though, what's the difference, functionality wise, between Froyo and GB? I know there is a big difference between GB and ICS but is it really worth the trouble to upgrade from Froyo to GB? I'm just not seeing it.

Personally, my phone seems to do better on battery life on gb, but who knows. And that video is....pretty awesome imo.

GB is prettier overall and you can use skype!

It's like when graphics card software support came out. Man, those were the days.

I would loooove gingerbread, but my pheonix 2.2 is running soooo smooth, 2 days battery life with talk and text, a full day with a couple of movies and browsing......overclocked, undervolted. Though once ginger starts taking her meds
and is stable, ill take her back.

the other day I made the jump from SFR1.2 to the ICS gingerbread EH17 ROM. The battery life scared me in a bad way. Made the jump back to Froyo and got all set up and now I see a new GB leak. I wana know how it is before I go back.

I would consider rolling back when I hear that they finally release gingerbread OTA. But solely for the purpose of getting the OTA upgrade. I doubt i will though, I think it's going to be just a matter of time before another update to CM7, and I heard Rodderick had some kernel in testing that will sweeten it up a bit more too.

Been running 10/22 since 10/23 as my daily. It just started getting the whistling so not to happy with that but I know it is a bug and they will fix it.

I have been running cm7 with ugothakd's kernel and been getting ~30 hours per charge, with usually 2 hours of display time. With Gingerbread, however, and I've never seen anyone else confirm this, there is a portion of my screen (left-center) that becomes non-responsive every so often, which I find quite annoying. It goes away by turning the screen off and then back on, but it occurs randomly, and I'm not sure how to fix it (besides going back to froyo).

i'm *NOT* rolling back, it's a waste of time. give the devs a week or so and you'll have a completely flashable ei22. hell, in a week, we may even have an official ota WITH modem AND flashable. if you're dying for stock, best way to do it is to wait for the devs to do it better. if you just want the novelty of receiving the ota (slow ass download and unusable phone in the process) then u can roll back to stock.
on a side note, i knew several ppl who rolled their evo's back to froyo (and turned the security s-on) to receive the ota update to gb, then had to wait for MONTHS to get another s-off method so they could root their phones again. true, since we have "odin" we don't have to worry much about this, but to make this long story short: sometimes it's better to just keep what u got and be patient for our most excellently skilled devs to do their magic...

Not every software upgrade is a functional one. One could even argue the most important ones aren't.

Modems can't be flashable, not yet anyway. Only flashable one there was was EB13 to DK28 and EI18 to DK28

Oh don't get me wrong...I could care less at how fast things happen. The implementation means more to me than anything. I was just saying that from the looks of things, It seems a bit sloppy.
As far as rolling back goes...that was done 20 minutes after trying ei22. I really don't like the overscroll. The color implementation just seems cheap.
Also...I'm not ruleing out a great running version of cm7 as my daily. Heck...there are lots of possible choices out there...and that in and of itself is awesome.

Of course, I already know that, I was just pointing out the following because if its an OTA, its obviously going to come with the modem and when an odin is made of the OTA, it's going to be flashable by odin, so no need to say "and flashable" because that's just a given.
It seemed like the other poster was implying a cwm flashable, which is what I was talking about. That's what I meant by not flashable..

2.3????

guesses? rumors? news? anyone? lots of hype about this. but it kinda seems like vibrant is gonna get left in the dust seeing as how we are still on 2.1. from what i have been reading, 2.3 (gingerbread) will be out within a week! so us vibrant users will be 2 versions behind! (wtf tmo and samsung?) my thoughts are maybe they didnt update us cuz they where just waiting for 2.3 to come out and wanted to get all the updating done at once. but i do kinda live in a fantasy world (drugs are bad mmmkay) so what are the thought from the fine folks here at xda on this matter?

Jk2 is a build number of the most recent (and most important since its specifically for vibrants) froyo. Before this all the froyo roms out has been built off of other variations on diff models/carrier.
The fact that jk2 was leaked means the official ota for all tmobile customers is real and immenent.

I doubt we'll ever see an official 2.3. Samsung will probably release 2.2 somewhere between 2-4 months behind the competition. That doesn't give me great hope that we'll ever seen 2.3. Figure that it took HTC/Motorola 2-3 months to turn 2.2 final into 2.2 custom versions to OTA, then we are looking at 4-7 months from now for 2.3 if all of the same timeframes hold. That's probably past the window that this phone will receive official updates.
well seems like the ported versions of the firmware updates have problems, like the headphone jack not working. or gps lagging ect. (not to say the developers didnt do a good job{ cuz they did an awesome job}) but i use that stuff lots. i agree with lex tho. i think that we will probly stop geting updates after awhile so that the newer more awesome phones can get bought up.

mmmm im thinkin honeycomb (3.0) will be out within a year. prob not for our phones tho. we will have to upgrade to the we will have to upgrade to the galaxy t hahaha
2.3 won't be that different
2.3 won't be that different It will change the resolution mainly to allow a bigger screen Right now 2.2 really can only function on a 7 inch screen without some mods so 2.3 will have that integrated. 3.0 will have real differences, but Vibrant has become the developers phone of choice so, you will see that on the phone as soon as it gets out.

it is no more official than any of the others that are out.
I doubt it will take that long. Look, the Galaxy S took a while because these are the first phones using the Hummingbird CPU. People say HTC and Motorola are more on the ball, but they're using the same Snapdragon and OMAP cores since the beginning. Heck, Froyo was originally built for the Snapdragon--no wonder Froyo is easy to port to those phones.
Now they've got Froyo on the Hummingbird, I would think future releases will be easier to port based on the accumulated experience.

No. Froyo was pushed to the nexus one in late june.
HTC/Motorola pushed it 2-3 months after that and samsung will wind up another 2-4 months after that, depending on when they finally push it.
2.3 will be pushed any day now to the nexus one, so you can do the math from there if you assume the same timeline. My guess its that pushes 2.3 out of the window for the upgrade.
Guys.. Froyo should be out before Christmas. Team Whiskey and Eugene already got it. And tmobile is sending OTA to people with JI6 to downgrade back to JFD. They're preparing peoples phones.
Okay, we have froyo, now we are set... OH WAIT GINGERBREAD IS COMING OUT I AM NEVER HAPPY OTHER PHONES WILL HAVE IT BEFORE ME CRY CRY CRY CRY.
Seriously, I can assure you gingerbread is not going to come out this year.
And the N1 is the dev phone so of course it's going to be first to snatch up the latests firmware.
Heck, samsung or tmobile DIDNT PROMISE YOU ANY UPDATES. You bought the phone and that is it. They have your money, what are you going to do know? Didn't you check on the behold? I think they are stuck on 1.6 same as the Cliq. BE HPPY you got froyo.

actually when i bought the phone i got ****in played man. haha the people at the t-mo store told me i would get all the updates as soon as they came out, and that i would get 4 g on my vibrant. thats when i didnt know much about the phone, or phones at all. but now that im doing my research, im finding out that none of that stuff is true! im liking t-mo. but dont like how they lied to me to buy the vibrant. i was even looking right at the g2. like 'what about this one?' 'na man! you want the vibrant' i love my vibrant. but i also am gonna want 4g and firmware updates in the future.

You guys reading Barak and Eugene's Tweets? Exciting stuff!

I'm kind of on the go right now but just saw that they're playing with Touchwiz 2.2.1 and theyre saying samsung altered the kernel, and although still rfs, it's flying! don't know how or where whatever they installed came from but just read that.
So Samsung made touchwiz faster did they update the interface?

Like I said, I'm repeating the little I read and not adding any rumors too it. They are both saying 3-4x faster, fixing the IO problem before and showing 1255 quadrant bone stock, just rooted. Also thought I saw a mention of a POSSIBLE upload tonight.
I thought I remember reading that 2.2.1 ditches RFS for something else.
I'm Pretty certain their talking about android 2.2.1.
Sounds like changes to I/o for faster Vibrant's too.
Theyre saying touchwiz 2.2.1 which yeah it's just android 2.2.1 and just the corresponding touchwiz that skins it. And no, still RFS, they must be pretty firm on that, but they have optimized it, like I said 3-4x faster theyre saying it feels like. I'd like to think these guys have tried enough ROMs on their vibrants to know what 3-4x faster feels like, so I'm pretty confident this is great news.

From Eugene's twitpic, he would seem to have acquired a 2.2.1 JL4 build with a baseband of JL1 still.

so are leaks like this (or previous 2.2 leaks also) leaked from samsung or tmobile? I know we have all been blaming samsung for the delay in releasing 2.2 to us, so im wondering if samsung has released it to tmobile?
Basically, who is holding us up on the official update, Samsung or Tmobile? (or in other words, who to blame?)
either way, these developers are amazing. i would have thrown my phone in the toilet if it we not for the developers here at xda
looks like they are making some good progress
I think they just need to release whatever they have and stop teasing/hoarding it. This is supposed to be a community. It's actually quite ridiculous.

Actually this is NOT what eugene and barak are tweeting about. They are tweeting about JL4 for the Vibrant. As to where they got this leak, well eugene has been able to get hold of leaks before so this isn't really a surprise.
As to the charges of hoarding or teasing, I don't recall eugene or barak ever owing me anything or anyone holding a gun to my head to follow their tweets.
Looking forward to seeing this in firmware myself, and I'm sure we all will have the opportunity soon.

Of course they don't owe use anything. But that's like someone discovering new firmware and choosing to talk about it rather than let everyone have a go at it. Wait, that's exactly what it is. No one else seems to have a problem with posting any new leaked firmware as soon as they discover them so why is this different?. The sooner it is posted, the sooner other devs can begin developing. That's the whole point of a community. Even if it is buggy I'm sure other devs are willing to sort it out for their releases.

They already released their source.. what has been done with that? Just because someone has something others don't,releasing it to the community guarantee's nothing. Eugene and Barak do plenty for this community, even when they are being harassed about it which is not cool.

Bought New EVO Shift with 2.2 from Sam's Club

So today my brother and mother both got phone upgrades.
My mom got the Motorola Photon (which comes unlocked) and my brother got an EVO Shift. I too have the Shift, along with a close friend of mine. Both my friend's and my Shift have been rooted and are running CM7 with the x99 kernel.
When I was looking at my brother's Shift, I noticed that it was still running Sense 2.0 (I believe) along with Android 2.2. It was not forced to the 2.3 update yet.
At the moment, it is off and charging.
Hopefully when I turn it back on, it'll remain 2.2 and should be rootable.
That said, just made this thread to announce that my brother got the Shift from Sam's Club ($25) with Android 2.2, and not 2.3.
I should be able to root this right? Why didn't his come with 2.3 or will it upgrade when I turn it back on?
Personally, I rooted mine via the command line, and my friend's with the GUI tool.
If it was 2.2 when you turned it off, it will be 2.2 when you turn it on.. You would have to manually accept the update. As far as why it's still on froyo, pure luck! Tell him to count his blessings and root.

It was partially luck, partially part of the policy in stores. FIFO, First In First Out for the store stock. That Sam's club might not move a lot of Shifts. So there stock is older, like crump said count your blessings . No it will not auto update. But just to make sure no one does anything dumb. Go into menu-settings-System updates-HTC software update , then uncheck Scheduled check. It will ask you if your sure you want to turn it off, yes you want to turn it off. This way no one does anything dumb, like take a prompted update. Also, my advice Root it .
AND repeat tell him not to accept any OTA updates!

I will say, when i get my shift, i will accept an OTA, but i would most likely manually update it. I love gingerbread 2.3.3 with sense 2.1. I thing its better than CM7. I think CM7 is good, but its not for me, i like sense over any custom rom. Many people will disagree, even try to fight with me, im just gonna say it now and get it over with, i get it, you think sense stinks, idc, dont bother starting anything with me. I wont take it kindly.

I get the benefit of being rooted and using GB via a custom rom from here at XDA. I get way more usage from being perm rooted than I ever would accepting an OTA upgrade and then only being limited to temp root right now. But whatever floats your boat. But I for one just don't see the logic of your statement.

There are 4 variations of unlocking your phone with CM7, and if you don't like those. Try Widgetlocker.
Hey guys, I'm bringing this thread back up because my brother's phone now can't make calls/texts or receive calls/texts
His data still works (Internet, etc)
It started last Wednesday.
Should I unroot, then call Sprint, or what?
Also, just *2 to call Sprint and have them fix it?
Thanks.

Where the f&$* is 3.2????

3.1 lags like crazy. 3.2 is much better ESP on the zoom when it used to lag with 3.1
Wtf Samsung? !?

I have to agree, my software is crashing like mad, especially market. 3.2 almost feels like it would be a emergency fix.
Ugh I know. Xoom had theirs months ago. Acer just got theirs
Worse comes to worse, ICS is being released to the public soon, a couple of months after that I would expect that we'll start getting nightly builds of the next CM.
Please, stop creating these complaint threads about 3.2. It gets old, nobody cares. Install a custom ROM and Overclock, whining won't make your experience (or anyone else's experience) any better.

1. You have to admit it is pathetic that official 3.2 is not out. Samsung is always been known for slow updates but I took the chance with them anyways. I learned my lesson. I don't want to deal with rooting and custom RomS. I'm so over that with my old evo

What rom are you using?
What will 3.2 enhance over touchwiz? Would 3.2 make that much of a difference? It's also a little more work for Samsung to update 3.2 with touchwiz isn't it? When I bought the tab I knew Samsung was going to do a touchwiz skin for it, I kind of knew then updates would arrive later for the device. If updates were that important to me I would have purchased a more pure honeycomb tablet.

How do you know if it was 3.2 that improved the tablet, or changes Moto made in the update aside from 3.2 that made it better? Cause usually companies, when they offer OTA updates, don't just update the Android revision and that is it. They include bug fixes, update drivers, that sorta thing.

Well I've never owned a Samsung device before my Tab, but I have always read about how Samsung was always slow to update their devices. I myself would be/am more interested in ICS. And it kind of doesn't really sound like it would be smart business sense on Samsungs part to put all of the time into a HC 3.2 and TW update with ICS's release right around the corner.
From what I've read about HC 3.2 is that it doesn't really bring that much more to our Tabs. Plus I think (but not sure) its not so much HC 3.1 that's laggy as it is TouchWiz. Again I could be wrong...
I bought my Tab right before the TW update came out, used it for a week and installed ADWex. Then a week later did the TW update and just stayed using ADWex as my launcher, it runs super smooth and love how you can customize it to my liking. So I'm not all that familiar on how TW runs on HC 3.1, everything I've heard and read says it is laggy so...
And why the dissing on the eVo!!! I'm still rocking my launcher day (hw 003) eVo, rooted running Decks 1.2 (GB 2.3.5) overclocked to 1.2gigs and loving it. I got the Evo 3d when it came out and took it back a week later, felt cheap. Got the Nexus S 4G when it came out, samething it felt cheap and my OG eVo was already running 2.3 with all of the good and bad it has to offer. I think I'm to the point now we're I'm just going to wait for ICS to start hitting the market before I up grade.... My OG eVo 4G has and dose just about everything a lot of the newer devices do already.

This.
Here's the change log. As you'll see, nothing is dramatically different or improved. The major changes are scaling for GB apps and the ability to read media directly from the SD card. Anyone seeing huge differences is under the placebo effect or the OEM changed a bunch of drivers that didn't have anything to do with 3.2 specifically (performance wise).

US version of the Motorola Xoom is GED, so the updates come straight from Google servers.

While I would like to have 3.2 as well, I am actually pretty ok with my KI1 firmware and ADW EX setup. At least, I don't seem to have any lag issues or force closes.

Bell Atrix Update to ICS Looks Bleak

http://mobilesyrup.com/2012/03/29/o...tting-upgraded-to-os-4-0-including-timelines/
Unless this is an incomplete list, it looks very bleak for the Atrix to receive ICS for Bell users. Just thought I would throw this out there (I know it has been discussed, but this literally just was posted on Mobile Syrup).

no worries.. this is XDA.
AT&T is releasing ICS for the Atrix (So they say)
You'll have a fully working virtually bug free ICS Rom Soon.
Doesn't really help those of us(namely me), who don't feel confident enough to install a custom rom, without bricking their phone

sorry.. Just assumed all XDA members were flash happy like me.
Currently using turls1 cm9 rom and smooth as hell. By the time the official ics comes out for the ATRIX this rom will be smoother, faster and have many more customizations. Including better battery life.

He isn't rubbing anything in. When I bought my Atrix, I vowed not to do any modding to it in the slightest. Then AT&T pushed updates to their Atrix, yet Bell decided to wait for months on end before pushing the same updates. It became rather annoying having to wait for the updates. Plus, add in the fact that fully-functioning Gingerbread was out months before it would be released on Bell officially, I decided to give modding a shot, and I haven't looked back. Unlocking your phone and flashing custom ROMs just increases the life of your phone, in that you know developers of ROMs (who are not paid by a company to do what they do) will push out stock and custom versions of new Android operating systems, while carriers like Bell will EOL this phone and others and you may not even see ICS come out.

really as pretty much everyone on these boards would tell you, rooting and unlocking bootloader is the way to go, at first it was scary... if i brick the phone? but i just read and read and read and ask for everything and in the end i got it, since then i havent looked back,
motorola is waiting for hell to freeze itself so we get ICS and also bell will then take another eternity to release it if they ever do, a bunch of devs are working hard to get ICS working in the meantime,
if not then you should try the neutrino ROM its awesome, really fast and smooth
my 2 cents

yeah but really if you follow the "noob" guide you should be able unlock the bootloader and get it going. if you follow it and double check your steps it shouldn't be too hard.
the atrix is old now, we've (as a community) gotten it to the point where most operations are one click or little user input. and once you root/unlock/mod the thing there are so many amazing ways to keep you falling back in love with the device. I was so ready to dump it and just use my skyrocket, but I ended up getting rid of the skyrocket and getting the lapdock and using the atrix full time.
I'm going to get the Galaxy Note, but the atrix won't be too far away because it can just do so much
I just installed CM9 on my atrix. It runs super smooth and fast. I love it. My phone finally feels smart
I have a Bell Atrix and still on Froyo. Honestly I really don't care anymore if it gets ICS or not. Battery life is extremely critical to me and I don't want GB's battery life from what I've been reading. ICS would have to have Froyo battery life for me to get exited and an available root option as well...

You can put pretty much any original Atrix-rom on the Bell. I have a Bell Atrix and have had both the Orange ROM for france, Telstra rom for Australia and now the original Motorola ROM for Nordic countries (45.31.1.MB860.NonEFIGSRetail.en.EU) which is great, no bloatware and my native language. I've never rooted or unlocked bootloader or anything, just a SIM-unlock. So I'm sure u'll be able to get ICS on it when it is released!

lol, why is everyone picking on me? The only person I know that tried to install a custom ROM ended up hard bricking his galaxy s2 within 3 days of ownership (luckily he was able to feign ignorance and get a straight exchange).
I've read the guides and kept up to date on ROM development, but I've also seen the "Help! my phone is hard bricked" threads also, so I'm pretty hesitant.
I suppose when my warrenty is up and there is a non-beta ICS ROM I'll try my luck....
tried at&t rom on bell set
it was working fine in all aspect with fingerprint sensor but there is no keyboard
