[Q] A CyanogenMod 7.1 (Endless7) ICS free is possible? - Milestone 2 General

I really like and use the CyanogenMod 7.1 made by Endless7 and I am really grateful for his work.
IMHO, it's a lightweight, fast, and was the cleanest ROM prior to attempts to imitate the ICS.
Please do not get me wrong, our MS2 won another life after this ROM, but the latest ones are pretty bad visually.
Why make something that worked so well, visually and functionally in an unfinished-looking thing?
I do not know if it is my sole opinion, but please consider a version without ICS elements.

I have same opinion as you, so I'm using older (the latest without ICS theme) CM7 build and it's working fine.
If I will move to another, it will be MIUI, or CM8 (when it will be REAL ICS based CM, not only theme).

Hi,
Using Theme Chooser and Adw options, you can completely revert the ICS changes, which I have to admit I don't like either.
You can also remove the corresponding apks in the update.zip, and remplace the themed Swype apk with a previous one.
It will require signing the archive again though.

You sure with this "signing"? AFAIR signing is not required, CWM installs unsigned updates from zipfiles.

I know that almost all things changed in CM7 to make it looks like more ICS and less GB can be restored by people with a little knowledge about Android ROMs.
But, for me, the question remains when I found other tweaks that needs a more deep knowledge.
Well, why become a good GB ROM looks like a unfinished ICS and a defective GB?

its just an optical change?! btw, i didnt notice any performance problems.
PS: maybe its just launcher related, i'm using go ex instead of adw.

Only issue I found when reskinning the ICS is that the font colour for notifications is stuck at white. I can live with this, for such a great ROM. I'll admit I do use Go Launcher EX with the ICS theme (or Go Launcher Original) and not issues with performance with the ROM (mild hangs on boot for SU but thats always been there!)
As for Swype, you can copy in the new Swype.apk into /system/app using root explorer, and set the permissions. Then reboot and you will have the swype put back in nicely. Its what I did with Dark Swype.

It's buggy isn't?
The ROM performs very well, it's made for free, but I still hope that someone reconsider to make this great ROM - at least a option of it - as clean as possible, including visually.

White notifications aren't a problem if you have a black background (which the ICS style has), I just use the meizu one which has a hatched/translucent background so its hard to read. I just need to get the time to read up about how to change it (and maybe add a blue overscroll effect) and I'd be done.
I would say this ROM is extremely clean, and visually pleasing, I think the ICS version of the ROM is more pleasing than the initial versions of it (but then again I've been skinning and customising it since it started).
I've actually fixed the white text using the UOT Kitchen, so its not a problem for me anymore.. attached the zip, flashable in clockwork (had to use the recovery from booting out of the rom). It will change a few things such as the bootlogo (sorry its a milestone one, love the old school logo though) as well as some default system menu items.

Maybe you already know it, but tezet has developed his own version of CM7.1 without visual modding.
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1338183
Endless7 has then merged his project with this one.
The main difference with old ICS (and ICS free) CM7 by Endless7 is that bothe these new ones are based on 2.2.2 UK Milestone2 kernel instead of 2.3.x CH Defy kernel (ported).
Finally, please note that some of the bonus tweaks which were available in the pre-ICS CM7 by Endless7 are not included in tezet's CM7.1 (but are of course included in the new Endless7 ICS one).

I have the same opinion. Was using the pre-ICS CM7 rom til the new Tezets's ROM. Working great, but it don't come with Swype, comes with Android's keyboad. Not a problem to me but some people prefers.

I totally agree with the originator of this thread, I don't understand all that 'buzz' with ICS. For me it is ugly. It's a pity tezet doesn't want to develop his rom anymore, and Endless7 decided to go in ICS direction

This is the main problem I have with the new ROMs; regression to 2.2.2 kernel signals the return of the dreaded multi-touch bug that made gaming impossible.
As I do not like the new ICS theme either, it means I am stuck on the old Endless pre-ICS builds for now. Still, it p*sses over the stock ROMs so I cannae complain.

ohhhhh.... so is that why when I am playing NOVA it sometimes decides to jump continuously until I pause, or the analog stick lock until I let go and re-press eslewhere? I would't call it impossible gaming though challenging at best

you can use tezet cm7. it's pure one. and if you want other features from my mod. you can install the latest patch and it's ics-optional.

Actually I've got the best results this way. Phone becomes better than any stock thing moto could provide. I Needed a few more data & cache wipes than usual, probably because I ran both installations at a time, but it is perfect now.
Just a question, that earlier versions that come with a chinese autocallrecorder, does that worked for sender and receiver (without speakerfone)? In your changelog it was removed some versions ago, I'm not sure where to find it alone, to test if it work with tezet cm7 & Endless7 mod... Thanks for any hint.

Well I'm running tezet + endless last patch and I'm unable to get the "pure gingerbread style". It still has ICS font (which sucks) and the blue battery meter. Any tips to run COMPLETE pure gingerbread like on tezet's?

[THEME][MOD]Gingerbread theme for 2.2.2

First off, all credits to adi4motion for the wonderful theme - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11336219&postcount=1
Made a few changes to the original theme to work on Nessy 2.2.2 ROM.
Should work on any deodexed 2.2.2 ROM's.
gingerbread_nessy3.zip
Should that give you any problems, try the version by ungaze.

Original theme does work on 2.2.2 but reboots the phone when volume keys are pressed in landscape mode. I did not change any of the theme elements.
Replaced services.jar from 2.2.2 after changing the clock color to black
Changed the reboot and recovery functions to work with 2.2.2
As stated, all credits to adi4motion for the theme.
It doesn't work for me.... it keeps rebooting like the first version.... I'm running Hypnos#2.... only thing changed is a2sd enabled but I don't think it could be the problem...
Works great here, nessy hypnos2, thanks abhinandh
adi4motion's gingerbread theme only works flawlessly for android version 2.2. 2.2.1 and 2.2.2 need a different framework and things like that to work without crashing(specially the dreaded volume down bug). I can share my version of it if TS would allow(as posting the link immediately would be like hi-jacking this thread IMO, I can't test TS's link as I am still running a 2.2 based rom ATM.).

Sure, here you go:
GB theme for 2.2.1 & 2.2.2
This is a hackish attempt to make the GB theme + power menu work for 2.2.1 and 2.2.2 ROMs. I could probably fix the inverted reboot and shut down power buttons, but that would probably need to wait(for free time).
PS. please use the original link provided when redistributing. Thanks.
@ungaze I can see that you have used 2.2.2's framework to create the theme.
But I have been running adimotion's GB theme on Dookmatt's hypnos (2.2.2) and it works fine. The power menu works well (shutdown, reboot, recovery).
The phone does not crash with vol down keys.
A more specific changelog would be very helpful.
@socialdistortion
Right now, I really don't know why the volume bug appears but at the time we(few 2.2.2/2.2.1 ROM devs) were trying to port themes to 2.2.1/2.2.2(about same time dookmatt released the very first nessy ROM), no one had any idea why we were having the strange volume bug. But through research and testing, we filtered it out and came down to the themes from 2.2, which are incompatible with later android versions. Now by that time, the only ROM out there based on 2.2.2 which has compatible themes was LOL 1.4(since LOL has a large user base through it's Italian site). What I did was took the LOL framework, edited it(merged with adi4motion's) so that it would look like gingerbread and packed it up again as a flashable zip. The result is the above mentioned theme.(and that's why I call it a "hackish attempt")
Now, a lot of people are having problems with a 2.2 theme running on newer android versions but you(and a few guys running hypnos#2) on the other-hand are not having any problems with it. I think the more appropriate question is, "how did you guys make it work?".
I'm really puzzled man. Cooked a few 2.2.2 and 2.2.1 ROMs, tried dookmatt's, tried LOL 1.4, tried kptbotbot's light ROM and each one of them presented errors when flashed with adi4motion's GB theme(all with fresh installed ROM). I hope someone with greater knowledge can enlighten us on this cause I have to say it, I'm out of ideas on this one.

I've not really done anything unusual. Did the usual wipe (everything) and then installed the ROM. Restart. And the install the theme. Everything works.
The only bug is the volume buttons don't interchange on landscape mode but i think it is 2.2.2 bug and not a theme problem.
Maybe the problem has got to do something with wipe. Some AmonRa versions don't wipe correctly and that maybe the problem. I use AmonRa v2.2.1
Try wiping the system with this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11785758&postcount=557
Also I don't have a2sd enabled... if that helps.

I'm pretty sure as to why the volume bug appears. Framework form the adi4motion original theme works perfect even with 2.2.2 but the problem is with services.jar file. Code in services.jar changed between 2.2 -> 2.2.2 and that causes input dispatcher to call a non-existing method leading to a fatal exception when volume keys are pressed in landscape mode.
Take a look at this logcat OP i captured when the volume keys are pressed - https://gist.github.com/966084 (line 4)
What i did in my theme was to replace services.jar with the original one in nessy (After changing the clock color in notification bar to white) and everyting worked perfect.
Hope this helps.
Sorry, double post.

Something interesting:
I installed it last week, everything went fine, worked great. In the meantime I had to restore because of some kernel errors and I wanted to reinstall it today. So I flashed it and when I started my phone I got FCs from all the apps and a nice bootloop. Tried to restart it but still nothing. So restore again...
I'm using openOptimus 1.148 & CWM recovery.

Pure Gingerbead

Hi there.
I'm gonna root my device now and I was looking the available ROMs here. Of course there are lots of ROMs and I don't know which one to choose.
Is there any ROM that is close to a pure Android Gingerbread (preferably the latest version)? Like the untouched android on nexus phones?
Thanx.
Cyanogenmod 7
Yep. I'm looking into Cyanogen right now.
It was the first ROM I heard about.
And it's the one suggested on Ace Hack Q&A.
I'm gonna try it.
I believe I can uninstall some apps that I don't want to use without any problems.
Thanx.
In all honestly, there are no apps on there to uninstall It's very very pure Android
The few differences from pure gingerbread to CM7 are improvements IMHO. There are some things you can remove if you're carefull and do it properly. I agree with above poster though, in that none need to be removed. Happy flashing!
Well, did it.
Seems good. But once I added the energy widget, I started receiving a com.android.phone error.
Seems like some error on the 2G/3G toggle, even though I didn't selected it.
Had to wipe everything, reinstall Cyanogen and run Titanuim backup again (this time only restoring apps).
Now I need to find another energy widget that does not give me this error (if the error is not in the ROM). Really useful for me, as I keep my 3G (never use 2G) on when needed.
Did you check the MD5 of your zip file matched what was on Cyanogen's website?
I got it from the official site.
Seems like some people are having this problem.
I found a workaround and it didn't occur again.
But I miss some of the sense stuff, like the good weather widget (no other in the market seems good) and some other stuff.
Let's see how long will it take for me to try another ROM
Try the app called "ilMeteo". The weather widget is quite good and forecasts (at least for Italy) are much more reliable.

You may consider android revolution 6.1.2 it is untouched as possible from stock version, no visual changes but with many tweaks and optimizations applied.
Don't like sense ? apply the no-sense scripts and have fun !

[ROM][CWM][Stock 3.2][7310UELA3][rooted + busybox] P7310 WiFi-only

Region: XAR (USA)
Build date: 17-01-2012
This is, as the title says, a Stock 3.2 ROM, CWM flashable, provided as-is, no support for this stock ROM.
CWM Recovery flashable (with Stock Kernel)
Installing overwrites the /system partition so be sure to backup your apps.
Deodexed
Zipaligned
Rooted + busybox (most recent files + zero issues with Superuser)
Also works great with _motley's kernel for Honeycomb 3.2.
Since it is a deodexed ROM, the first boot will take a while. Give it at least 5-10 minutes.
For backup, do a Nandroid to backup your existing ROM with CWM (How-to here)
For a fresh install (better safe than sorry) please use the Wipe data/Factory Reset from CWM Recovery and then flash the zip. When it boots, it will start the setup wizard like you just bought it.

If you are aiming for something stable (with Camera working, compass and everything) then look no further. If you want to play with something more advanced, but with some little bugs here and there then go with CM9 or the Beta. I hope that helps you out.
Edit: As of 2/22/12, Overcome is once more based on official firmware. It is fine now.

Why is this ROM so large?
nirogu325,
I am looking to save space on my 16GB GTab here, and I was going to put this in my storage as a backup means to go back to stock (rather than keeping a 1.3GB nandroid on board).
Just curious why is this ROM coming in at 396180 KB while the ICS ROMs (like Galaxian soup) come in less than 170000KB when you include the GApps zip size?
I notice the Overcome ROM is pretty big as well (on par with the stock rooted).
Is ICS just that much leaner than the Honeycomb ROMs?
Thanks!

You hit the nail in the head. You've to take into consideration the whole TouchWiz layer (apps, framework, widgets & more) which weights more. ICS is a very lightweight and optimized OS when compared to the rushed OS that's Honeycomb.
Edit: Although if I were you I'd have this ROM as a backup measure. It is the most stable version for Honeycomb, had it for months without issues.

Like I said - I am just looking for excuses to clean off my internal storage. I figure I can put this flashable zip on the tablet for emergency use, as opposed to leaving a 1.3GB Nandroid backup of the tablet on there (the only thing I would lose is the setup work I did to get all my apps on the device before I rooted and did the Nandroid).
This saves me 1GB (roughly)!
Thanks

Install Instructions
You MUST wipe, fully. If you have a problem and you didn't wipe, I'm calling your mama, who is going to come out and wipe for you in front of everybody, embarassing you in front of all your friends and ruining your life forever. So please, save yourself the hassle and humiliation, and just wipe. I will never, ever, edever, put out a no wipe update. Thank you.
Gingerbread bootloaders are recommended!!!
If coming from a Twiz based Rom - you will have to flash this twice, Wipe as per the steps below, flash the rom, it will reboot in the middle of the flash. Use your buttons to reboot into recovery mode, then wipe and flash again, starting from the first step below. If that still doesn't work, you may need to go to CM7 as an intermediary step between Twiz and ICS.
If coming from another ICS build - you should just be able to flash straight away, if it doesn't work, be sure you wiped. If you have to go back to go forward, let it be so.
Steps
-Download ICZen and place it on your internal sd
-Reboot to Clockwork Recovery
-Perform a wipedata/factory reset
-Go to mounts and storage and format the system partition
-Flash your downloaded ICZ rom file
-From the main menu of recovery, perform a wipedata/factory reset again
-Reboot
-On bootup, give it a few minutes to settle in, reboot and use as normal.
-Enjoy your ICZen!
This rom uses the /datadata partition. You may get a low space message if you tend to load a lot of apps. Try turning your Gmal sync down to a day or two instead of the default, or moving apps to sd.
I recommend the data fix from Team ICSSGS, you can find the link to their site above. It will put your data/data on the 2Gb partition, at the sacrifice of speed. You can now use the intergrated memory controls in the Rom Control to maintain a high level of free memory, I use 100MB, and that definitely kills any lag the data fix may cause.

I really like rom. There are lots of wicked features. But
Sync doesn't work. For some reason I'm connected to 3g/h and when I try to sync it says cannot.establish a connection. I also can't browse the web because of this. Ugkg3 on rogers and it always works well with full service.

If you would read, you would notice that he credits AOKP, which is a port from a nexus rom, and he said that he used the framework and the rom control from AOKP. Also, the are inverted apps and if you noticed, all of the ports are very similar, with the exception of slim

GPS not working. and i don't mean it is not working well. it just does not work at all. not even blinking, not even trying. GPS test doesn't show a single sat. as if the phone has no gps.

Ya, i know what you mean man. CM9 and ICSSGS and Fusion are really the only developed roms for cappy. All the others are ports over that really come from nexus s. I would just try them all out and find what one works best for you

Actually, this was the first thing i tried... didn't help.
Then reflashed the rom, still didn't work.
Flashed another ics rom (AOKP) to make sure gps works and it did. Reflash this rom again and no gps still.
No idea whats wrong. My phone just doesnt like ics i guess. Still havent found a rom stable enough to use daily on my phone.

Ok, i will look into it and see what i can do
To clear something...
Firstly ım writing this for only because ı think there is a needed information that anybody dont knows gps abaut this rom...And please dont reply this post...
Firstly SGS Family devices( i9000,cappy,vibrant...) in fact has same devices but has some minor changes too... For that reason you can simply port between these devices...
If we talk abaut this rom then this rom has AOKP base but originally its a vibrant rom. And vibrant gps hardware is not same to cappy and vibrant roms has different gps settings... You can see AOKP works gps but this rom not... because this reason...
So ı can say there is % 0 possibility for working gps on Cappy now.(Needs a gps fix not a simple changing gps.conf file)
I sure hope the GPS can be fixed since this is the only ics rom i tried so far that can run on my cappy without it shutting down.

[q] What FAST rom you recommend for Defy?

Hi,
Recently I got to conclusion it is time to change my defy to smth. faster. I thought to myself though that I will give it one last try by playing around with rom and settings. For a very long time I had stock froyo rom.
Last week I tried Cyanogen which constantly produced errors on my device so I ditched it not wanting to waste any more time (these were both Gingerbread and ICS versions). Then I tried newest MIUI. At first it looked OK, but when I installed a little bit of gear on it started to act a little bit sluggish. I see close to no difference in overall phone performance from my old Froyo.
So this is basically my last attempt to "save defy". I am looking for a FAST AND CLEAN rom. What I care about is performance. I really do not care about fancy switches, beatiful tollbars, tons of extra stuff that is built into the rom.
Any suggestions?
Best regards,
Kordi

Are you sure? From what I see it isn't very "clean" rom. I don't say it is a bad thing, just that I look for something more... "spartan"...

what do u mean by clean rom?
The less embedded apps the better... i.e.: I really don't need MotoPhonePortal embeded in the ROM. Ideally it would have everything that is not essential removed.
I have installed CM7.2 or WhiteRabbit and I'm very happy with this rom. The only problem I find is some flash content. Pikachu 2.4.20 is another alternative. I like less, but this is personal.
Hi, I wrote above that I tried some instances of Cyanogen and it does not work on my device. Besides Cyanogen is not a "clean"rom.
white rabbit is perfect! give it a try to "save your defy"!

Any details why? I don't find pleasure in trying numerous ROMs and reinstalling everything in my phone 3 times during the week. I would like to know what to expect... especially that all Cyanogen ROMs I tried didn't work properly on my phone.
Hello Kordi666,
Maybe wanna try MS2Ginger from walter79.
It is Gingerbread Android Version with Moto Blur. I use it because I bought my phone because of MotoBLur and this Rom is very fast with this but I recommend to overlock to 1Ghz.
This is the most useful thing to get your Defy fast.
Best regards,
mpeg
The ROM I would recommend
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033654
Its Android version 2.3.7
Its from Quarx and its fast, stable and give long battery up time. You can trust it 100%.
Please hit the Thanks button if this was useful.
Another option to consider would be the the deblurred GGL ROM, which seems fairly responsive and uncluttered and has good battery life and can be simplified further by freezing apps with TB:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1500286
I installed the Rom by aneeshcphilip - WIUI. The first one that was mentioned in the thread and so far I am very pleased. I did not have the opportunity to test the battery properly but so far it seems to work very well.
This time I revised all the software that I was used to installing and I resigned from many apps that I was used to coming to conclusion that I do not need them and I install them only due to my habits i.e. set vsel.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1397059
All default waste apps and bloats removed. Must try.

sorry if i answear you only now
i think it's perfect because it's really smooth, great performance, long battery life, nice ui and it has only really usefull apps.. till now it's the best rom i've tried!
maybe use also droidx to change your governor and you'll have a super defy!
EDIT:
i'm speaking about white rabbit!
Sh....t So I bricked my phone. Everything was fine after I installed WIUI until smth happened with one of my apps that I couldn't uninstall it even with Titanium Backup. So I wanted to do factory reset. After reset, the rom stopped seeing my SD card and I got constant error massage about faulty messaging process. I tried caouple of other roms and all the time the same error. One more factory reset under normal recovery and now my phone stops at Motorla sign.
Any help guys? This would be much appriciated.
Flash this Full SBF using RSD Lite and u will be back to Stock Froyo.
U can then again flash ur Fav ROM.
